Use a flat design without shadows or 3D characteristics. The text in legends and captions should stay within the chart size and not overflow into the margins. Use a unified text size of 18px for all your data visualizations.

Since A0 is a hard-to-manage format for most printers, these poster presentations result in heftier charges for the user. Instead, you can opt to work your design in two A1 sheets, which also becomes more manageable for transportation. Create seamless borders for the section on which the poster sheets should meet, or work with a white background.

Paper weight options should be over 200 gsm to avoid unwanted damage during the printing process due to heavy ink usage. If possible, laminate your print or stick it to photographic paper – this shall protect your work from spills.

Finally, always run a test print. Gray tints may not be printed as clearly as you see them on screen (this is due to the RGB to CMYK conversion process). Other differences can be appreciated when working with ink jet plotters vs. laser printers. Give yourself enough room to maneuver last-minute design changes.

General message:

• Aim to tell a compelling story about why your research is important in a real-world context.
• Remember that a poster is an interactive & visual medium, not a research paper. You will present alongside your poster, and the text serves as a compliment to your conversations with audience members. Design your content with that purpose in mind.
• Write to your specific audience (language/detail will differ if you're presenting to other researchers in your discipline vs. a broad general audience)

Language & text:

• Be concise with your words: focus text on the main points and big takeaways of your research. Bulleted or numbered lists help.
• Use text size, style, and colors strategically to emphasize your message
• Make a compelling title readable from 8+ feet away (to draw in an audience). Make the rest of the text readable from 3-5 feet away (24 point absolute minimum)
• Use a template as a starting point (example links in right-hand column).
• Leave blank/white space to enhance visual appeal and readability.
• Provide a link, QR code, or handouts for audience members that would like more information.
• Get feedback on your design & practice with an audience.

To design your own poster using PowerPoint:

• Choose Design on the ribbon
• Go to Page Setup
• Under Slides sized for click on the black arrow
• Choose Custom
• The height of the paper is always 36 inches
• Plan the flow for the information. Usually it is in columns from left to right, but a horizontal arrangement might work for some information.
• Dark text on light backgrounds is easiest to read on paper and uses less ink than an overall dark background. However, including some information boxes with light text on a dark background is OK.
• The width of the poster can vary up to 56 inches.

How to make posters longer than 56 inches

• Make the poster half the size that you want, then enlarge 200% when printing.
• For example, to make 36 x 60 poster, enter the dimensions 18 x 30. We will scale by 200% on the print setup.
• Font sizes of 16 point for text and 24 point for headings are readable when increased to 200%.

Microsoft PowerPoint was originally designed for slide presentations, not posters. But it can also be used to create a poster.  When you create a poster with PowerPoint, you are creating the poster on only ONE slide (a very large slide). 

NOTE: PowerPoint for Windows versions  are very similar. Screenshots here may differ slightly from the version you're using, but most features work the same way.  

Getting Started

1.  Launch PowerPoint by clicking its program icon. Choose a template, or start from scratch by selecting Blank Presentation.

When you start a new presentation, you may see default text boxes in the slide window.  

These boxes are used for the title slide of a presentation. You don't need them, so delete them by selecting them with the mouse cursor and pressing the delete key. 

2.  To specify the dimensions of the poster click the Customize icon under the Design tab. Then click Slide Size.

In the Slide Size dialog box, enter the Width and Height for your poster.   Be sure that the printer you plan to use is able to print at the size you specify.  

Important Notes on Poster Sizing:

The maximum slide size in PowerPoint is 56 inches x 56 inches.

PowerPoint slides are, by default, 13.333 inches wide by 7.5 inches high.

The standard size for PRINT academic posters is 48 inches wide by 36 inches tall.

DIGITAL posters may be STANDARD (4:3) or WIDESCREEN (16:9). PowerPoint has pre-sets for these that you may use. The poster will automatically adjust to fit the screen you are using. If you think you'll print out your poster, you may want to adjust the sizing. To fit these proportions, a 4:3 poster would be 56 inches wide by 42 inches high, and a 16:9 poster would be 56 inches wide by 31.5 inches high.

If you want a poster that is longer or wider than  56" we suggest that you create your poster at half-size. Then when you print it, print it at 200% size.  For example, if you want your finished poster to be 40" by 80", set your poster size to 20" by 40". Then print it at 200%.  Keep in mind that if you are creating your poster at half-size, everything in it (text, heading, charts, images) will end up being twice as large in your finished poster.  So, for example, if you create a title that has a font size of 48 points, in the final poster it will be 96 points.

Define the poster dimensions, design your poster.

Microsoft PowerPoint isn't just for presentations---it also provides all of the creative tools you need to design a beautiful poster. Just set the dimensions, design the poster, and print it out. Here's how to make a poster using PowerPoint.

Posters come in all sizes, but the first thing you need to know is PowerPoint's slide limit is 56-inches x 56-inches, so you'll need to plan accordingly. It's also important to note that you want to set your poster dimensions before you start designing your poster. Otherwise, you might end up having to rework parts of your design due to the size change.

Here are some of the standard poster sizes to get you started:

• Small poster: 11" x 17"
• Medium poster: 18" x 24"
• Large posters: 24" x 36" or 27" x 39"

Once you've decided on your poster size, set the dimensions in PowerPoint. To do this, open PowerPoint and navigate to the "Design" tab.

In the "Customize" group, select "Slide Size."

Select "Custom Slide Size" from the dropdown menu.

The "Slide Size" window will appear. Input the width and height specifications to match your required size. Keep in mind that if your height is larger in size than your width, the orientation of the slide will automatically change to "Portrait."

When you're finished, select "OK."

Once selected, a new window will appear giving you two scaling options: Maximize or Ensure Fit. If your slide already has content on it, you'll want to select "Ensure Fit."

Your slide will now be resized.

Your poster design is going to depend completely on you. You'll want to pay attention to the background of the poster, text and image arrangement, font size and style, etc. Essentially, you should treat this part exactly as if you were just creating another slide for a presentation.
