Movie Review

Kelsey walked down the aisle. But Braden, her groom to be, wasn’t there.

Braden left her at the altar, telling their church “the Lord told him” he wasn’t supposed to marry her. And though members of the congregation buy it, Kelsey doesn’t—especially when Braden calls to admit that he fell in love with Kelsey’s old roommate.

But wedding or not, now Kelsey must go back to the church to collect all her wedding stuff. In the process, she stumbles into a missions spotlight meeting, where a missionary is busy talking about his time in Taiwan. That’s when another (rather nosy) congregation member asks a pointed question:

“Do you have any advice for the young people who may be struggling with disappointment and need to listen to God?” she asks.

“I had plans that fell through and took a teaching job in Taiwan on a whim,” the missionary replies. “I think God uses everything—what you love, where you hurt, your mistakes, your whims. I guess if you’re stuck, maybe take a leap of faith.”

It’s the motivation Kelsey needs to escape her own rut. The missionary helps get her a job teaching English at a Christian school in Taiwan. Not only will it help her get over Braden, but it’ll also help her get money to support her mother’s medical bills.

But Taiwan is a whole world away. And Kelsey just might be in over her head.

Positive Elements

Another teacher at Kelsey’s school, Horace, doesn’t speak English. However, he begins to learn it and corresponds with Kelsey using a translator app, attempting to help her assimilate into the culture. He also helps her connect with her class, and he teaches her how to ride a motor scooter.

At first, Kelsey has a tough time connecting with her class. And in particular, she has trouble with Trisha, whom she considers to be a “problem student.” But Kelsey slowly and surely learns how to connect with her students, and she manages to break through with Trisha.

Spiritual Elements

Kelsey’s life changes when Braden leaves her at the altar. He also leaves Kelsey to grapple with people asking her why God didn’t tell her . We later learn that, in fact, the Lord didn’t tell Braden to abandon Kelsey—he was actually just attracted to Kelsey’s old roommate.

Not surprisingly, Kelsey’s also pretty angry at her heavenly Father. “God did not burn you,” Kelsey’s sister, Liz, tells her. “Braden did.” But Kelsey isn’t convinced. “I know, but He did let it happen.” Kelsey also grapples with a couple of other questions, such as how God chooses who will become a parent, and why should she commit to Him if He’s just going to take it all away.

Kelsey arrives in Taiwan to teach English at a Christian school, the Taiwan Adventist Academy. Students there put on a play recounting the biblical story of Ruth. One girl sings the Christmas carol “O Holy Night.” Horace practices his English by reciting Ecclesiastes 3:1-8.

We hear a joke about Jesus feeding the 5000. When Kelsey asks her students to write letters to Santa for what they’d like as a way to practice English, a couple of them wondering why they’re asking Santa if God already gives everything. “Jesus says ask, and He give,” one student says.

A missionary talking about his work discusses how God uses everything for His purposes. In this scene and elsewhere, the film coneys the idea that what we see as misfortune might actually be God pushing us to something better that He has for us.

A missionary essentially says, “If complications disrupt your life, go on a mission trip,” which isn’t necessarily a good reason to consider that calling.

Horace takes Kelsey to Taoist Wen Wu Temple, which overlooks Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan.

Sexual Content

A male high school student dances what Kelsey later calls “sexy dancing” at a talent show, hip thrusting on the ground and intentionally pointing his rear at the audience before the principal kicks him off the stage. Two people share a kiss.

Violent Content

An earthquake shakes a building. We hear a reference to a couple of people who have passed away.

Crude or Profane Language

God’s name is misued once. Another character exclaims, “Thank God you don’t understand English. Someone says that she “has some magic words” she’d like to say to someone.

Drug and Alcohol Content

Other negative elements.

Kelsey covers another woman’s car in cake.

As Christians, we believe that God is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. But if we really believe that God is all-powerful, all-knowing and all-present, it may force us to ask a difficult question.

Why did God let that happen?

There’s no single answer to that question, of course. That said, the movie Sun Moon , now streaming on Pure Flix, suggests that one of God’s purposes might be to propel us toward something better.

When Kelsey is left at the altar, she complains that God let it happen. And given our Christian faith, that’s true. Even if God did not support Braden’s selfish decision, He did allow it to occur. But ultimately, it pushed Kelsey towards a teaching career in Taiwan—one that changes her for the better.

And that message might connect deeply with some viewers, too, reminding us of God’s good, loving and sovereign character, even in the midst of deep disappointment.

When Kelsey (MacKenzie Mauzy) is betrayed by the love of her life, she reluctantly agrees to attend a church service where she makes a bold move by responding to a mission call, regardless of the fact that she is struggling in her relationship with God. When she hears the speaker say that “God uses everything: what you love, your hurt, your whims,” she decides it’s time for a leap of faith and accepts a temporary job as a teacher in Taiwan.

Kelsey quickly discovers that she has much to learn in this foreign land, but she resists getting attached to the people in her life, especially her fellow teacher, Horace (Justin Chien), so her journey is challenging. However, when these two agree to teach one another their native languages, the topics they discuss become increasingly deep and meaningful, often surrounding the role of God in their lives.

In these moments we discover the other source of Kelsey’s fear – her gravely ill mother. Her strained relationship with her spunky sister, Liz (Madison McLaughlin), highlights Kelsey’s reluctance to deal with her emotions, but Horace helps her see that she is operating out of the fear that if she gets too close to anyone, God will take them away. He encourages her that it is ok to feel, and to be transparent in the process. This raises important questions worth discussing about the nature of God: how He operates in our lives and how to manage our emotions in trying times.

Meanwhile, it is evident that Kelsey’s fondness is growing, not only for her students, but for Horace as well. There are sweet scenes of the two getting to know one another through sightseeing excursions and shared meals, and their connection is conveyed authentically. Short of one small, concealed on-screen kiss, this film is entirely appropriate for all ages. However, there is one scene where Kelsey takes out her unprocessed anger on her ex-fiancé’s car by throwing pieces of their wedding cake at it. But when we finally witness Kelsey face her fears, and learn new ways to manage her grief, we understand her growth and subsequent purpose is enabled by these circumstances. This sweet movie encourages discussion in a subtle way around the faithfulness of God in the face of grief and loss.

Sun Moon is a quiet film that reminds us in a powerful way that throughout the circumstances of our lives, God is ever-present and can create purpose from our pain.

Sun Moon Movie Review

Sun Moon is a beautiful story about discovering joy and purpose despite cultural differences and difficulties. I was able to watch this new movie from Pure Flix before it’s release so I could share my Sun Moon movie review with you.

Sun Moon tells the story of Kelsey, who was just left at the altar. Understandably, she is having a hard time dealing with this. Her heart is broken, and she is humiliated. Kelsey abandons her faith and church because of this. Since the rug was just pulled out from under her, she does not know what to do, or what God wants her to do.

Kelsey does not want to see anyone, especially while clearing the wedding decor from the church. So while trying to avoid people in the parking lot, she goes inside to hide. She ends up listening to missionaries from Taiwan tell about their time there teaching. She sees a job there as an opportunity to start fresh.

This is complicated by Kelsey’s mother being sick and in the hospital. She lives with her little sister, a college student, as well. But her sister encourages her to go.

Kelsey has a, shall we say, adventurous trip to the school in Taiwan. Her first several days overwhelm her, but her pride won’t allow her to admit defeat. She also encounters some difficult students. While talking to the principal, he encourages her to learn from Horace, a fellow teacher that the students really like. She finally starts making some headway with her students.

After things start going more smoothly, Kelsey puts forth some effort to become assimilated to Taiwan. While Horace helps her learn how to ride a Vespa, their friendship begins.

Sun Moon Movie

As Kelsey’s adventures and explorations of the country continue, her students warm up to her. She is finally able to connect with them and make a difference in their lives. Like moving to Taiwan to be their teacher did in her life. Her students ask her to help them learn and perform a play based off the Biblical book of Ruth. They perform it for the school’s big Christmas party at the end of the semester.

Kelsey enjoys watching her students perform, and actually performing with them. But she knows her time there is up, her term has ended, and she must go home as her mother is dying.

Once home, Kelsey realizes how much closer to God she has gotten since being in Taiwan. She sees that even though she was struggling with disappointment and a loss of faith, that God used it all. Yes, even the hurt and the pain. She learned to trust in His timing. Since Kelsey learned what God’s purpose and plan for her life was, she returns to Taiwan.

I really enjoyed watching this movie. Sun Moon is a family friendly movie about love, healing, letting go, forgiveness, and family. At some point, we all walk through difficult and challenging times. Sun Moon is a great reminder that God works through all the circumstances in our life. We see the hardships, and pain, that Kelsey goes through. We see her walk through these difficult and challenging times. How she overcomes these challenges, and returns to her faith. And discovers God’s plan and purpose for her life.

I highly recommend Sun Moon. This movie has the themes of struggling with disappointment & loss of faith, how to walk through difficult & challenging times, and there is a season for everything, running through out. Sun Moon is suitable for the whole family.

Sun Moon debuts on Pure Flix today, May 5, 2023. Ron and I had the pleasure of watching this movie a few days ago and we really enjoyed it. We love a good rom-com and when it has a Christian theme, that’s even better! Thanks to Pure Flix for providing a sample of the product for this review. Opinions are 100% my own.

Kelsey, MacKenzie Mauzy, is shocked and stuck after being left at the altar – unsure of everything she thought was God’s plan for her life. She abandons her faith and church. She is running from failure, heartbreak and humiliation. In an attempt to understand God’s purpose for her life, she goes to Taiwan to teach English. Will her leap of faith pay off?

Why Taiwan, you may ask? Missionaries to Taiwan were speaking at her church when she went to pick up the remains of her wedding decor and cake. She spoke to the missionary and he offered her a job teaching English at the Taiwan Adventist Academy.

As you can imagine, this huge life change had its share of hurdles, the language barrier being just one of them. The movie follows Kelsey, her students, and another young teacher, Horace, Justin Chien, as they learn and grow together. Sun Moon is a story about all kinds of love and how unexpected relationships can be exactly what we need in order to draw closer to God.

Mom Maven’s Thoughts

We enjoyed Sun Moon . It’s a sweet movie that introduces us to some of Taiwanese culture. The majority of the movie takes place at the Taiwan Adventist Academy where the majority of students and teachers speak Mandarin. There are no subtitles so the audience is as baffled as Kelsey is about what is being said.

Thankfully, later in the movie, just before Kelsey is scheduled to return to America after her one semester contract is up, Horace takes her to explore the area and we get to see more of the beauty of the country.

Kelsey isn’t just running away from being left at the alter. She had quit her job, to focus on being a new wife. While all this is happening, her mother is critically ill and she just doesn’t know how to deal with that, so her younger sister spends a lot of her time at mom’s bedside. All of this has led Kelsey to question where God is and what is His plan.

Taking the Message of Sun Moon Farther

On the Pure Flix website there are 3 small group discussion guides with accompanying video clips that you can use after viewing the movie. The themes of the three lessons are:

I recently watched the movie “ Sun Moon ” and found it to be quite heartwarming. It beautifully portrays how God guides us to where we need to be at the right moments in our lives. The main characters, a couple, had to overcome language and cultural barriers, adding to the emotional depth of the story.

Although I didn’t originally intend to write about this movie, I must admit that it still manages to be entertaining. It’s a movie that reminds us that sometimes we have to expand beyond our comfort zones to truly get to the place we are destined to be in our lives.

Sun Moon’s story exemplifies how a single individual can impact the lives of many. I strongly believe in this because I have personally experienced being used as a leader by God on numerous occasions. It never fails to amaze me how the help and guidance I receive from Him result in positive changes in the lives of others.

Is "Moon" evoking "2001," or does its mining outpost on the far side of the moon simply happen to date back to the "2001" era (which was of course eight years ago)? I lean toward the second theory. After the mission carrying Dave Bowman disappeared beyond Jupiter, mankind decided to focus on the moon, where we were already, you will recall, conducting operations. In "Moon," the interior design of the new lunar station was influenced by the "2001" ship, and the station itself is supervised by Gerty, sort of a scaled-down HAL 9000 that scoots around.

At some point in the future (we can't nail down the story's time frame), this station on the far side is manned by a single crew member, Sam Bell ( Sam Rockwell ). He's working out the final days of a three-year contract and is close to cracking from loneliness. Talking to loved ones via video link doesn't satisfy. The station is largely automated; it processes lunar rock to extract Helium-3, used to provide Earth with pollution-free power from nuclear fusion. My guess is, the station is on the far side because you don't want to go gazing at the Man in the Moon some night and see a big zit on his nose.

The station is large and well-appointed, has entertainment resources and adequate supplies. Sam communicates frequently with the home office ... and so does Gerty. Sam doesn't do any actual mining, but his human hands and brain are needed for repairs, maintenance and inspection. One day he's outside checking up on something, and his lunar rover smashes up. He's injured and awakens in the station's medical facility. And that, I think, is all I need to say. A spoiler warning would mean secrets are revealed -- and you'd look, wouldn't you, no matter what you say?

I want to take a step back and discuss some underlying matters in the film. In an age when our space and distance boundaries are being pushed way beyond the human comfort zone, how do we deal with the challenges of space in real time? In lower gravity, how do our bodies deal with loss of bone and muscle mass? How do our minds deal with long periods of isolation?

The "2001" vessel dealt with the physical challenges with its centrifuge. Dave and Frank had each other -- and HAL. Sam is all on his own, except for Gerty, whose voice by Kevin Spacey suggests he was programmed by the same voice synthesizers used for HAL. Gerty seems harmless and friendly, but you never know with these digital devils. All Sam knows is that he's past his shelf date, and ready to be recycled back to Earth.

Space is a cold and lonely place, pitiless and indifferent, as Bruce Dern's character grimly realized in Douglas Trumbull's classic " Silent Running ." At least he had the consolation that he was living with Earth's last vegetation. Sam has no consolations at all. It even appears that a new man may have entered the orbits of his wife and daughter. What kind of a man would volunteer for this duty? What kind of a corporation would ask him to? We, and he, find out.

"Moon" is a superior example of that threatened genre, hard science-fiction, which is often about the interface between humans and alien intelligence of one kind of or other, including digital. John W. Campbell Jr., the godmother of this genre, would have approved. The movie is really all about ideas. It only seems to be about emotions. How real are our emotions, anyway? How real are we? Someday I will die. This laptop I'm using is patient and can wait.

Note : The film's capable director, Duncan Jones , was born Duncan Zowie Heywood Jones. Easy to understand if you know his father is David Bowie , which rhymes with Zoe, not Howie. He's a successful U.K. commercial director; this is his debut feature.

Solar Eclipse Eye Protection: How to Tell If Your Glasses Are Safe or Fake Today

Watching the solar eclipse? You don't want to get caught with rip-off eclipse glasses today. What to know.

Special glasses can protect your eyes when watching this year's solar eclipse.

Ready? The total solar eclipse is today -- April 8, 2024 . This eclipse, which will be visible across North America, is the last one in the continental US for almost 20 years. If you're in the path of totality today or outside the area and viewing a partial eclipse, you're going to need solar eclipse glasses to protect your eyes while staring at the sun. 

Solar eclipse glasses are special glasses that block out the most dangerous parts of the solar spectrum for human eyes. When you look through them, the sun should appear as an easy-to-view yellow-orange circle. Use them to watch the entire eclipse, but be aware that these glasses will block out all light -- so you won't want to use these glasses while walking, driving or doing anything besides eclipse viewing.

However, bad actors may sell eclipse glasses that don't actually do anything to protect your eyes from the sun. So, if you're viewing the eclipse in person today, you're going to want to make sure that your eyes are really being protected. Read on to find out about the steps you can take to make sure your solar eclipse glasses are legit.

Check the ISO number of your eclipse glasses

According to the American Astronomical Society , a real and safe pair of solar eclipse glasses should be labeled with ISO 12312-2 (sometimes written in more detail as ISO 12312-2:2015), which is an international safety standard that denotes the glasses reduce visible sunlight to safe levels and block UV and IR radiation.

Check the list of reputable eclipse glasses vendors

However, fake glasses may also be labeled as being compliant with ISO 12312-2 because, as a general rule, people are greedy, selfish and not to be trusted. To double-check the veracity of your eclipse glasses' ISO claims, you can see if the vendor from which you purchased the shades is trustworthy in the eyes of the AAS. See its list of Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters and Viewers . Really, the safest thing you can do is pick a vendor from the above list and purchase your glasses from there, so there are no concerns about counterfeits and fakes when it comes to your eye safety. 

The list also includes big-box retailers and chains where you can grab AAS approved eclipse glasses, including Warby Parker , which is giving glasses away for free starting April 1. Personally, I got my glasses from a trusted local museum, but I'll still be checking mine to make sure that I'll be protected. 

In assembling its list, the AAS checks to make sure a manufacturer earned its ISO rating with proper, labs-based testing. It also asks manufacturers for their authorized resellers and resellers for their manufacturers. If the vendor of your eclipse shades is listed, then you are safe. But the opposite isn't necessarily true. If your vendor isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean they are slinging counterfeits. It just means the AAS hasn't checked them out or hasn't been able to track everything down.

So, what are you to do if your vendor isn't on the list? Perform an eye test.

How to test your solar eclipse glasses

If your mystery pair of eclipse glasses look pretty darn dark, that's a good place to start start. You should not be able to see anything through them except the sun itself or something similarly bright.

What's something as bright as the sun you can use as a test? The AAS suggests you check sunlight reflected off a mirror or a shiny metal object. If sun is behind the clouds or on the other side of the earth when you want to test your glasses, you can use a bright-white LED such as the flashlight on your phone or a bare lightbulb. The reflected sunlight or bright, white, artificial light should appear very dim through a safe pair of eclipse glasses. If you can see light behind a lamp shade or a soft, frosted light bulb through the glasses through your eclipse glasses, then you know that these glasses aren't strong enough to stare safely at the sun. 

When staring at the sun through safe solar eclipse glasses, the sun should appear comfortably bright like the full moon, according to the AAS. If your eclipse glasses are uncomfortable to use, that is also a good sign that they might not be legitimate.

Why eclipses create a "beautiful coincidence" on Earth

Americans are a little spoiled when it comes to eclipses. After all, we just experienced one that the majority of the country got to see, and it comes on the heels of the "Great American Eclipse" that tracked from Oregon to South Carolina in 2017.

But that doesn't often happen. And it won't again until the 2040s.

On average, an eclipse occurs in the same place every 375 years, said Dr. John Mulchaey, Carnegie Institution for Science’s deputy for science and the director and Crawford H. Greenewalt Chair of the Carnegie Observatories.

And we’re living at the right time to truly enjoy the sight of a total eclipse on Earth, he said.

While eclipses occur throughout the solar system, none are exactly like the ones experienced in our world.

The moon is about 400 times smaller than the sun, but the moon is also about 400 times closer to Earth than the sun is, creating a “beautiful coincidence” that results in eclipses when the three celestial bodies align, Mulchaey said.

This alignment is called syzygy, or when three objects line up in space.

In the distant past, the moon was much closer to Earth, which means totality likely didn’t appear as it does now. And within another 60 million years or so, the moon will be so far away that it will never cover the sun, making this a rare moment in time, Mulchaey said.

The long history of myths and folklore inspired by eclipses

Eclipses have long inspired terror and awe as ancient cultures sought ways to explain the celestial phenomenon .

“I find the mythology and folklore of eclipses fascinating,” said Mark Littman, a journalism professor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and coauthor of “ Totality: The Great North American Eclipse of 2024 .”

“To see how people long ago and people today reacted to a total eclipse of the Sun, a sight so unexpected, so dramatic, so surprising in appearance, and so unnatural even though it is utterly natural.”

Ancient records of eclipses date back to 772 BC, when the Chinese marked them on animal bones, and 750 BC, when Babylonians recorded eclipses in their cuneiform writing on clay tablets, Littmann said. Both cultures "realized there was a rhythm to eclipses," which meant they could be calculated and predicted in the future.

Despite the ability to predict eclipses, the cause of the eclipse remained unknown, so myths and folklore filled the knowledge gap.

"The mythology of eclipses most often involves a beast that tries to eat the sun for lunch. For the Chinese, that beast was a dragon or a dog. For Scandinavians, it was a wolf," Littmann said.

Those in northern South America thought the sun and moon fought one another, trying to shut off each other's light, he said.

Transylvanian folklore suggested that the sun looked down on Earth, saw the corruption of humans, and turned away in disgust.

And the Fon people of western Africa thought the male sun ruled the day, while the female moon ruled the night.

"They love each other, but they are so busy traversing the sky and providing light that they seldom get together," Littmann said. "Yet when they do, they modestly turn off the light."

Eclipses provide unique opportunities for NASA scientists to learn more about the future of the sun

NASA scientists took full advantage of Monday’s eclipse to collect data and study the Earth, moon and sun in different ways, the agency’s deputy administrator said. One area of specific interest is the sun’s corona , or outer atmosphere.

“This is a very elusive region and it can be viewed during a solar eclipse in a very special way,” Pam Melroy said during a news conference at the end of March .

She said understanding the corona is “key to understanding fundamental questions about how heat and energy are transferred out into the solar wind,” which contributes to how solar wind and flares impacts Earth.

“Things are happening with the corona (that) we don’t fully understand and the eclipse gives us a unique opportunity to collect data that may give insights into the future of our star,” Melroy said.

And this is an especially good year to study the corona, she said. The sun is approaching  solar maximum — the peak of activity — later this year, and scientists are eager to capture this moment through a variety of observations that can only occur during eclipses. During solar maximum, the sun’s magnetic poles flip and then the sun will grow quiet again during a solar minimum.

“The chance that we are going to see something amazing is very high,” Melroy said.

Former NASA astronaut says she hopes eclipse sparks sense of connectedness with the universe

A former NASA astronaut said she hopes Monday’s total solar eclipse inspires a connection between everyone who witnessed it and the universe.

“We’re all part of this universe – and the universe was showing us some of its secrets at that point in time,” Mae Jemison told CNN.

While viewing totality in Bloomington, Indiana, the former astronaut said she was thinking about other times she experienced eclipses. 

When she saw a partial eclipse as a child in Chicago, Jemison said she was trying to make sense of what was happening.

But then thinking about her time as an astronaut, “it reinforced the feeling that when I look up, when I look away from the Earth when I was in space, it again connects me with this world, with this universe – and know that I have a responsibility.”

Jemison said science is about building on knowledge for the next generation, and the eclipse was an opportunity to do just that. Scientists used Monday’s eclipse to gather data to better understand the sun but Jemison said she hopes there is also learning at a personal level.

“I hope what people discover is themselves and their connectedness to the rest of the universe,” she said.

Eclipse Explained: Is there anywhere that saw totality in both 2017 and 2024? 

Yes! There is an area where both 2017 and 2024 paths of totality intersect. According to a map from NASA , that area includes parts of Missouri, southern Illinois and western Kentucky.

One of the places in that intersection, Carbondale, Illinois, experienced the longest period of totality in 2017 at 2 minutes, 42 seconds, according to NASA. 

Seeing the eclipse again more than 20 years later

The couple saw a partial solar eclipse together on December 25, 2000, in the state of Sonora in Mexico, he said.

Maybe your eclipse glasses were fake. Perhaps you forgot to slip them back on as the first bit of sunlight reappeared after totality. Or you noticed your child, friend or family member looking up at the sun without putting on their glasses.

Symptoms of eye damage after improperly viewing the eclipse without proper protection can take hours or days to manifest. They include loss of central vision, altered color vision or distorted vision .

And if you notice any symptoms or experience eye discomfort, make an appointment immediately using the American Optometric Association's doctor locator , said Ronald Benner, an optometrist and president of the American Optometric Association.

“For most people, it’s an alteration of color vision,” Benner said. “The next morning, colors just don’t look right, or it may be bleached out it or just kind of hazy all the time. For others, it may be that they actually have holes in their vision.”

If the damage occurs in the center of someone’s vision, it can affect the ability to read or recognize faces, Benner said.

From space, crew members at the International Space Station saw a different perspective of the celestial event — the moon’s shadow cast onto Earth.

The orbiting laboratory "soared into the moon’s shadow" and NASA Flight Engineers Matthew Dominick and Jeanette Epps got a chance to capture it following their “workday filled with cargo transfers, spacesuit maintenance, and microgravity research,” according to a statement from NASA . The astronauts took pictures and videos of the shadow of the moon as seen from their position about 260 miles above southeastern Canada.
