Start and Improve your Business Programme (SIYB)
The SIYB programme is a system of inter-related training packages and supporting materials for small-scale entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses. It aims at increasing the viability of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through management principles suitable for the environment of developing countries.
The ILO assists Business Development Service (BDS) organizations to develop the skills required to implement, monitor, manage and finance the training programme, and sets up a sustainable training system at the national level, thus contributing to sustainable economic growth and employment generation.
The SIYB programme is structured into four separate training packages, Generate Your Business Idea (GYB), Start Your Business (SYB), Improve Your Business (IYB), and Expand Your Business (EYB) which are designed to respond to the progressive stages of business development. Generate Your Business Idea (GYB) is intended for people who would like to start a business, and who, through the training, develop a concrete business idea ready for implementation. A GYB course typically lasts 2-3 days. Start Your Business (SYB) is for potential entrepreneurs who want to start a small business and already have a concrete business idea.
The programme is a combination of training, field work and after-training support, and helps participants assess their readiness to start a business and to prepare a business plan and evaluate its viability. SYB courses are usually delivered in 5 days Improve Your Business (IYB) introduces already practising entrepreneurs to good principles of business management. Its six modules (marketing, costing, buying and stock control, record keeping, planning for your business, and people and productivity) can be taught individually or all combined in a full course.
If the full course using all modules is delivered, its duration is approximately 7 days Expand Your Business (EYB) gives growth-oriented SMEs the practical tools for business growth, assisting them through training and non-training interventions with a focus on business strategy to expand their business.
The main output from the training programme is a business growth plan, which includes chapters on marketing, operations, human resources, financial and strategic management. Chapters can also be used as stand-alone training and support products. If the full content of EYB is delivered, its duration is 1-2 weeks; like for the shorter courses above, the course delivery can be spread over a longer time span

Improve Your Business (IYB)
What is IYB?
IYB targets existing and practicing entrepreneurs to good principles of business management. The six IYB modules (Buying and Stock Control, Marketing, Record Keeping, Costing, Planning for your business, and People and Productivity) can be taught individually or all combined in a full course.
Taking into account the specific needs of entrepreneurs, the package is delivered on a modular basis. Delivering the complete ‘standard’ package of seven modules would take approximately seven and a half days in total (possibly spread over time) plus at least one counselling session after training. The counselling session is preferably delivered within four weeks after training. After the counselling session, the SIYB trainer will link their clients to other relevant providers of business development services. An advantage with the IYB training is that it is modular, meaning that the IYB trainer can customize the training according to the needs and priorities of the client.
The objective of IYB training is to enable micro, small and medium-sized entrepreneurs to set up a business management system.
By the end of the training course, entrepreneurs will have been enabled to set up standardized processes for buying, stock control, record keeping, costing, financial forecasting, marketing and productivity improvements through improved workplace practices.
IYB training is customized for male and female owner managers of micro, small and medium sized businesses with between 10-25 employees. To benefit fully from IYB training, these entrepreneurs should be able to read and write.
Furthermore, they should have been in business for at least six months before training. IYB training is equally suitable for men and women in rural and urban areas, and young entrepreneurs.
IYB training is designed for entrepreneurs to:
- Market their products more effectively
- Set up buying procedures
- Set up a stock control system
- Forecast their sales, costs and cash flow and produce balance sheets and profit and loss statements
- Cost their goods and services
- Keep records
- Improve productivity through improved workplace practices
The IYB training materials comprise seven IYB manuals. Different regions have further to that developed sector adaptations such as construction, fishing or agriculture, or added relevant modules such as “HIV/AIDS Information and Facts” in Africa. The IYB manuals are used during training and also serve the entrepreneurs as a source of reference after the course. Each manual covers one basic business management concept and explains step by step how to set up systematic management processes.
Explanations are given in easy to understand language and plenty of illustrations are used to explain concepts and solutions as clearly as possible. Relevant examples and exercises are important features in the manual, enabling the reader to immediately apply the theory of learning and to step by step complete the corresponding section in the business plan booklets.
Improvement rates after IYB training vary depending on which modules are taught and national business environments. According to global studies the percentage of businesses showing increased profits varies from 45% to 70%.
