ACINN Graduate Seminar - SS 2024

2024-04-24 at 12:00 (on-line and on-site), digital research services & jupyterhub @ university of innsbruck.

Annemarie Schönherr

ZID, University of Innsbruck, Austria

The Digital Science Team at ZID provides a range of services in research data management and supports scientists at the University of Innsbruck with their IT research infrastructure needs. Drawing from specific use cases at ACINN, I will showcase the services our team offers. I will give particular focus to our ongoing project, "JupyterHub Implementation". Handling and analyzing the large datasets required by ACINN present notable challenges. Additionally, I will explore the avenues for publishing research data. Given the substantial data volumes involved, choosing an appropriate repository is an important issue of effective research dissemination.

The content of this webpage is the author’s opinion and the author’s intellectual property. ACINN has the author’s consent to make this information available on the webpage for the announcement of the seminar presentation and in the seminar archive.

Course Overview

An MPhil/PhD is an advanced postgraduate research degree that requires original research and the submission of a substantial dissertation of up to 100,000 words. At Birkbeck, you are initially registered on an MPhil and you upgrade to a PhD after satisfactory progress in the first year or two. You need to find a suitable academic supervisor at Birkbeck, who can offer the requisite expertise to guide and support you through your research. Find out more about undertaking a research degree at Birkbeck .

The MPhil/PhD Management is ideal for those who wish to pursue academic careers involving teaching and research in management, or to further careers in consultancy or policy work. You will be required to be highly motivated, well organised, prepared to learn your subject in depth, and able to engage constructively and critically with a range of academic research related to your topic to complete an independent research project.

Birkbeck has particular strengths in the study of innovation and entrepreneurship; marketing; labour economics and industrial relations; international business; corporate governance and corporate social responsibility; strategy as practice, organisation theory, information systems strategy, social networks, and trust within organisations; corporate finance and financial reporting; and the management and regulation of sport. Our research draws on the methods and theories of various social science disciplines - principally economics, psychology and sociology, but also geography and political science.

During the first year you are required to take four modules for credit:  Research Philosophy ,  Qualitative Research Methods , Organization Theory and Quantitative Methods for Finance and Business . After these modules comes completion of your Research Prospectus, which includes a preliminary literature review and a plan for the rest of your thesis research. This is due in June of the first year for full-time students, or of the second year for part-time students.

Satisfactory completion of the modules and the Research Prospectus is necessary for continuing with the degree. Following this you will proceed with data collection, analysis and writing your PhD thesis.  Read our guidance for prospective MPhil/PhD students in management .

Follow these steps to apply for the MPhil/PhD Management at Birkbeck:

1. Check that you meet the entry requirements, including English language requirements, as described on this page.

2. Draft a research proposal (approximately 2,000-3,000 words plus references). A PhD proposal is an outline of your proposed project. It includes an introduction, a literature review/theoretical framing, the research aims/questions and the research methodology. Your research proposal must articulate the fundamental issues or questions you plan to investigate in your research project and should specify the broader area in which your research is situated, making reference to the existing body of knowledge and any ongoing debates on the topic. We will be assessing:

  • your expertise in your chosen research area
  • your knowledge of the literature
  • the feasibility of your project
  • the quality and originality of your ideas.

Find out more about writing a research proposal .

3. Contact a potential supervisor for your MPhil/PhD research. Whilst you will certainly develop a few drafts of your research proposal before you submit it to us as part of the application, it is important that it is clear and well-written when you make the first contact with your potential supervisor(s). Once you are ready, you can contact them to share your research proposal and Curriculum Vitae (CV). If they are willing and able to supervise your research, they may be able to help you further refine your proposal before you submit your final application.

You can look at the Find a Supervisor area on this page for an overview,  search our Experts’ Database  or  browse our staff pages  for more in-depth information.

4. Get an agreement in principle with a supervisor before submitting an online application. If you apply without first getting the support of a potential supervisor, your application will be rejected. (Please note: finding a potential supervisor does not guarantee admission to the research degree, as this decision is made using your whole application.)  Find out more about the supervisory relationship and how your supervisor will support your research .

5. Apply directly to Birkbeck, using the online application link on this page. You will need to provide the names and contact details of two referees who can speak to your academic/research abilities.

6. Our course team will be able to offer you advice and support, and guide you through your studies from application to graduation.

Call for applications Appointed by Rectoral Decree n. 709/2023 Prot. n. 149534 of 02/06/2023

The PhD in Management offers to students a broad and inter-disciplinary education in the fields of business and finance studies and management research. It provides candidates with strong theoretical foundations in social science disciplines and a deep knowledge of research methods applied to management, accounting, banking and financial problems. It offers specialisations in two major areas: General management and Accounting, Banking & Finance . Doctoral students are expected to have full-time status, attend core and elective courses, participate in research projects conducted by faculty members, present their works at international conferences, and publish in international journals. The program offers the  opportunity to acquire knowledge and advanced research methodologies in the scientific areas described before. It requires the production of an original research contribution. PhD students acquire competencies that can be used both in the academic and business sectors.

During their first year, students of both tracks attend two compulsory courses: Research methods and Econometrics. The compulsory courses for first-year candidates in Management are: Introduction to statistics, Strategic management, Quantitative Res. Methods, Consumer Behavior, Organizational Behavior, Qualitative methods, and Economics of Innovation. The compulsory courses for candidates in Accounting, Banking & Finance are: Microeconomics and 3 courses among: Accounting, Seminars in Corporate Finance 1 and 2, Seminars in Banking, Intertemporal Asset Pricing, Corporate Governance, and Behavioral Economics. During the second year, candidates in Management attend 3 courses among: Arts, History and Management, Consumer Behavior/Marketing Strategy, Technology Entrepreneurship and Research in Strategic Operations. Candidates in Accounting, Banking & Finance must attend 2 compulsory courses: Econometrics 3 and Advanced Micro Panel Models, and 2 courses from the list of courses described in the first year. In addition, all candidates take the seminar "The Art of Managing the Peer Review Process". During the second year, the students attend two types of "lunch seminars" (at least 22 compulsory). The first type is called "My cup of tea". During these seminars, one member of the Faculty of the Department meets all the PhD students to present his/her research field. The second type is the "research seminars" featuring international scholars that give a talk on their research. Finally, students, in collaboration with Bologna Business School, participate in the training on writing case studies and, guided by a professor of the school, draft a case study. Over the last years, the course offering in the various areas characterising the doctorate has been enhanced by involving 6 renowned professors affiliated with London School of Economics (UK), Trinity College Dublin (IE), Syracuse University (USA), Cass Business School (UK), Michigan Ross (USA) and Grenoble (FR).

During the first three semesters PhD candidates learn the analytical tools for theoretical and empirical research in various sectors of economics and management. They will also attend summer schools and methodological seminars at the Department, other research centers of the University of Bologna or other universities. All the courses require the preparation of research notes. At the end of the first year research all candidates prepare a research paper under the supervision of a faculty. During the third semester of the II year candidates prepare their thesis proposal which is presented at a department seminar. The thesis will be supervised by one main advisor. All PhD students normally are involved in research projects carried out by the Department and have to joint the 'lunch seminar' organized monthly by the Department. The University takes care of delivering basic courses (students are invited to attend) on 'research management and how to participate to EU projects and being aware of other research collaborations opportunities', 'Intellectual Property Management' and 'Entrepreneurship'. On top of basic courses, more advanced courses on these topics can be attended. The PhD coordinator suggests attendance to specific events (conferences, workshops, schools), based on the research projects of individual students.

The entire PhD program is thought in english. Specifically:

  • all courses are held in English;
  • our students are immersed in an international research environment, wherein several seminars, summer schools and workshops are organized with the participation of internationally renowned scholars;
  • the calls for applications are regularly published on the websites of international associations and job market platforms specialized in management and economics (e.g., INOMICS, EIASM, SSRN, AKADEUS, Academy of Management);
  • over the last 10 years (cycles 29-38), our program has attracted 22 international students (corresponding to the 36% of the enrolled ones) from various countries including: Brazil; Russia; Turkey; Serbia; Ukraine; Albania; Indonesia; China; Romania; Lithuania; Pakistan; India; Iran; Tunisia; Iceland; Nigeria; Philippines; Portugal;
  • various foreign PhD students have also spent research periods at our Department (e.g., from Brasil, China, Germany, Spain and Norway) or have attended our PhD under international mobility programs (e.g., Alban, Erasmus Mundus, World Bank).

Presentation of papers to national and international workshops, conferences and seminars during the PhD studies and submission of articles for publication in  (mostly international) scientific journals during the PhD studies and immediately after graduation. Final thesis in the form of a monograph or a collection of three papers.

Postgraduate Programs / PhD - Doctor of Philosophy in Management

Starting dates.

Our academic calendar is based on a quarter system (1 quarter = 10 weeks). Because of the program's flexible structure and modular design , multiple starting dates are available at the start of every Quarter and of every Term, in October, November, January, February, April and May. All campuses follow the same academic calendar.

Program duration

Part-time students can earn a Doctoral degree in 2 to 4 academic years, depending on the number of courses attempted per quarter, the course selection and the course planning; completing half the typical number of courses equals twice the duration of the part-time program. The more flexible the working hours, the more courses will be available to finish faster. All Postgraduate students are considered part-time. Part-time studies are available only for students with a national passport or residence permit.

Teaching schedule

Courses are scheduled across main and branch campuses from Monday to Saturday between 8:30 and 18:30, typically in sessions of 3 hours each and in an intensive seminar format with visiting professors , providing students the flexibility to combine work and studies, and fostering inter-campus exchanges and global networking. Refer to the course planning for further details on the availability of seminar courses. Additional courses may be available online; additional academic policies and conditions will apply.

Program language

All courses are taught entirely in English across the campus network. Students should have a certain proficiency in English when they start. Students may have English as a native language, may have had English as the language of instruction during previuos studies, may have had advanced English langauge courses during previous studies, may have an English language school certificate, and/or may have scores from standardized tests such as TOEFL or IELTS. Refer to the table below for further details on required scores for standardized tests and language school certificates (CEFRL). Depending on the submitted documentation, students may be subjected to an English test at the start of their studies. Typically, non-native speakers who studied in English before or those who had advanced English lessons during previous studies, and with sufficient confidence, perform well. Because of the multi-cultural environment, only a relatively small percentage of students are native speakers.

Study destinations

Our campuses are all located in the city center of several exciting destinations . Students are encouraged to transfer between campuses for one or more quarters, but may also choose a single campus as their destination of choice. Students who prefer shorter periods abroad can join our seminar courses taught by visiting professors at several of our campuses throughout the academic year.

Program schedule

All campuses offer identical study programs and follow the same program structures for an interruption-free experience. However, not all courses are taught face-to-face at all campuses. Some courses are organized in a hybrid format (partially face-to-face, partially virtual), and some only virtually. Some programs are therefore also only available in a blended format, with some courses face-to-face, hybrid or virtually. Blended programs (and hybrid courses) are an excellent option for independent students as well as for globetrotters travelling far beyond the reaches of our campus network.

Global study trip

Each academic year, students from all campuses in Europe, as well as students from our academic partners can join our Global Study Trip to Tokyo, Japan . The weeklong trip is packed with cultural excursions, company visits, social activities and an Asian Management seminar.

Application deadlines

Our Admissions Department applies a rolling admissions process and does not set deadlines to submit applications because of the multiple starting dates available. Applications are reviewed continuously troughout the year .

Admission requirements

Students should be fluent in English , and have obtained a Master degree (or equivalent qualification according to the European Qualifications Framework). Refer to the application process for further details on the recommended English language levels.

Degrees with 240 European credits or 160 American semester credits are typically considered equivalent if they are equivalent also on the European Qualifications Framework. Other degrees can be submitted along with your application for review by our Admissions Department. No distinction is made between academic or professional Master degrees.

Students who do not hold a business-related Master degree or equivalent may be required to complete an inbound assessment test prior to starting the program, and, depending on the results, earn an additional number of credits in leveling courses from the Master program in order to be fully prepared for our postgraduate programs.

All courses are taught by academically qualified faculty members who have earned a doctoral degree in their field of expertise and also draw from extensive professional experience. Faculty members teaching in the postgraduate courses specific to higher education also hold an adult teaching certificate.

Program fees

Program fees are calculated pro-rata per campus where the student completed courses and earned credits. The total fees are due payable on a quarterly basis on a fixed payment schedule. Program fees cover matriculation and tuition fees but do not include the cost of living, housing, travel, transport, health insurance, study materials and other expenses. For more details, refer to the document attached.

Credit system

Doctoral degree programs consist of 60 European credits , equivalent to 40 American semester credits. Courses are assigned a number of credits, indicating the estimated workload. Each credit equals up to 30 learning hours, including contact hours, research hours, self-study hours and group-study hours. The workload of a typical part-time postgraduate student amounts to 5-10 credits and 150-300 learning hours per quarter.

Grading system

Students are assessed on a combination of attendance, participation, individual assignments, group assignments and exams. Assignments may include reading materials, term papers, reports, presentations, and others. The combination of these assessments provides students with an equal opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge . The final grade is either pass or fail. In case of a fail grade, students have the option to retake the module or take another module that addresses the program requirements.

Honor system

Students who achieve a certain GPA ( Grade Point Average , or the weighted average of all grades earned, calculated on a 4.0 scale), will have their academic honors listed on the academic transcript issued together with the diploma.

Dissertation

The comprehensive dissertation work consists of a dissertation proposal and the actual dissertation. Proposals for its title and contents are submitted by the student and are approved by the school’s academic council, the Global Council for Management Education (GCME). Dissertation work can be directly related to the student’s professional activities.
