What is the difference between an online phd and an online edd doctorate degree.

The Doctor of Philosophy, or PhD, an academic title/degree, focuses on field research and strategies for helping working teachers improve their performance in the classroom. PhD degrees often allow online students to choose a focus, such as a curriculum and education, design, leadership, or administration.

An online doctor of education is a valuable professional qualification. This degree is for experienced teachers serious about advancing into leadership and administrative positions. Programs may contain broad-based academic research applications but typically center on leadership theory and practice.

The intriguing aspect of this degree is that students might discover similar employment options. Although most doctoral programs have quite particular curricula, academics and practitioners sometimes overlap in education.

Bottom Line: An online PhD in education focuses on academia and research, while an online EdD focuses on graduates moving into leadership positions within a school.

What To Expect from a Doctorate Degree in Education

Although each school has a specific curriculum for affordable online doctoral programs in education, most address the same fundamental ideas. Research, writing, and critical-thinking skills are often improved by students seeking an education doctorate. However, specific courses frequently differ by specialization or emphasis.

Qualitative and quantitative research, diversity, and educational leadership and management are a few of the most common courses of online doctorate programs in education. The program’s conclusion can be a capstone project or a traditional dissertation.

Specializations

Some institutions provide a certain educational specialization. Others offer a wide range of options for students who want to match their specialization to their professional aspirations.

Aspiring college instructors could find interest in doctoral programs with specializations in adult education, curriculum studies, or urban and multicultural education. Leadership in organizations, leadership in education, and global executive are additional popular specializations.

Internships

A requirement of many doctoral programs is an internship. Although most education doctoral applicants already have work experience in the field, doctoral internships assist students in getting ready for prestigious leadership positions in education administration or research.

Dissertation in Practice (DIP) or Capstone

A DIP or capstone requirement is frequently the final step in a doctor of education degree. The dissertation and capstone allow students to demonstrate the breadth of knowledge they received throughout a program and their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, even though they may differ in structure and delivery.

Both capstone projects and dissertations demand protracted planning and preparation over several semesters. The most typical output of a dissertation is a written research paper, which students must defend in front of an advisor panel. A capstone often consists of a final project demonstrating the student’s practical expertise in their field of study.

Are there ways to make an online PhD degree program in education more affordable?

The cost of earning a PhD in education is significant. Luckily, there are affordable online doctorate degrees in education and there are ways to make sure they are as affordable as possible.

In-state Tuition

Most colleges and universities charge more for out-of-state students, so attending college in your own state will almost always be a cheaper option. There are even some schools that offer a flat-rate tuition, which means that in-state and out-of-state students pay the same per credit cost.

Other Expenses

Earning an online doctorate in education degree as opposed to an on-campus doctorate degree can be more affordable because you will save money on expenses like housing, transportation, and certain campus fees.

Continue Working

It is common for online doctoral students in education to continue working while completing their degree program. Earning a living while going to school can ultimately reduce your dependence on student loan debt.

Financial Aid, Scholarships, Grants, and Loans

Affordable online doctorate degrees in education are possible if you are able to take advantage of financial aid, including grants, scholarships, and loans.

Check out the Federal Student Aid website for more information.

Bottom Line: An affordable online PhD in education doctoral degree or an online EdD degree is possible when you factor in things like in-state tuition, financial aid, grants, and scholarships.

Online Doctorate in Education Programs

A doctoral program can help you rise to the top of your field and give you the skills to guide teachers and students toward greater knowledge.

  • Education (no specialization)

Curriculum & Instruction

Educational leadership, special education.

A number of accredited colleges and universities now offer online Doctor of Education and PhD in Education programs in a wide-range of specializations.

Doctorate Education

If your passion is for teaching, then it makes sense that you’d choose to earn your doctoral degree in education. This is a generalist degree that may allow you the opportunity to customize your studies or choose an area of specialization. Concentration options may include higher education, administration and classroom technology.

Do you have your sights set on becoming a school administrator? Getting this degree in education online can help qualify you for the job. With a doctorate, you could also consider a job as an instructional coordinator or a special education director. In higher education, you might become an academic dean or a professor.

Outside of the school setting, you could use this degree to improve your abilities as a corporate trainer. If you’re interested in public policy, you could help shape new education laws and initiatives.

The core courses for this degree program may cover topics like education theory, curriculum assessment, classroom diversity, education law and school leadership. You may have the opportunity to choose several electives on topics that are of interest to you.

Your self-selected classes may address early childhood education, social development, special education, literacy instruction, school finance or other relevant issues.

Doctorate Curriculum & Instruction

Effective teaching requires that educators use appropriate materials and convey information in meaningful ways. You can explore these concepts in a doctoral program about curriculum and instruction.

This degree can be a good choice for people who want to head up curriculum and instruction departments in school districts or education departments. For example, you could become an instructional coach or a curriculum director.

The knowledge you gain can also increase your capabilities as a principal or a superintendent. Alternatively, you could teach in the education department of a college.

Not all doctoral candidates who choose this program work in formal school settings. This course of study can also be useful if you run education initiatives in museums or community organizations. Your knowledge in this area may also help you shape public policy or become a trusted consultant.

To prepare for these responsibilities, you will probably take courses about the ideas and theories that shape curriculum selection. You may also study how to evaluate whether an instructional approach is working and think about how to conduct research in this area.

The classes may cover additional topics, such as cultivating a team approach to curriculum selection and using technology in the classroom.

Educational Leadership

School systems and other educational programs need strong leaders who can take the helm of their organizations and make reliable decisions. To become qualified for this type of role, you may want to pursue your degree in educational leadership. Under your direction, you can help organizations thrive and learners take their knowledge to the next level.

Not surprisingly, this degree is best for those who want to assume leadership roles within organizations. Often, those organizations will be traditional school settings; for example, you could be a school principal or a superintendent at the district, regional or state level.

You could also serve as an administrator at levels of education outside of the K–12 bracket — for example, working for a university or a daycare chain.

Getting your educational leadership doctorate has value in non-school settings as well. You could work in a corporation to head up employee development or serve as a training consultant. Another option would be to work as a community services manager who coordinates outreach efforts.

Many of your courses will likely focus on the art and practice of organizational leadership. You will likely discuss how to use creative thinking, make decisions and spearhead changes for the betterment of educational systems.

Special Education teachers

Some groups of students need individualized instruction or extra classroom supports. Schools’ special education programs are designed to meet those needs. By enrolling in a doctoral program, you can learn to provide strong, effective, student-focused leadership for these programs.

You may be able to pursue a concentration in an area like early childhood or visual impairment.

Special education leaders work in schools and the organizations that support them. You could be a special education director or serve as the administrator of a special-needs school. Working as a curriculum developer can equip classroom teachers with materials that are accessible to students of all ability levels.

Studying special needs can also prepare you to provide leadership in community organizations. You might work in the area of behavioral health or early intervention. You could also make it your mission to shape policies and advocate for special-needs learners at the state or federal level.

During your time in school, you’ll need to study the ethics and laws that should guide special education practice. You may also talk about ways to oversee special education teachers, manage change in your department, make good use of your financial resources and ensure that all students are receiving an appropriate education.

Courses for a Doctorate in Education

Courses for a Doctorate in Education

Your doctoral program may be largely tailored to your area of interest. Even still, your school will probably have a core set of doctoral classes that every student in your program will need to take. This will probably include some courses that focus on leadership and effective practice in education.

There will also likely be classes that concentrate on conducting research and preparing your dissertation or another final project. Your curriculum may resemble the list below.

  • Change and Transition in Schools: Change is inevitable in learning institutions, and your leadership can make all the difference in how your employees respond to times of transition. In addition to learning how to guide others through these situations, you may also discuss how to push for changes that will benefit your staff or students.
  • Culture and Diversity in Education: Classrooms are often filled with students from a wide variety of backgrounds, and that can affect educational outcomes. In this course, you can explore how to be sensitive to students’ cultures, and you can discuss how to ensure that education is accessible to all students.
  • Education Law: Working in a school system requires abiding by a host of regulations. You’ll need to comply with federal and state laws related to education and employment, and you’ll also need to obey your local school board’s rules. In this course, you may talk about the rights and responsibilities of each member of your school community. Other topics may include navigating legal developments, creating policies for your organization and dealing with legal concerns that may arise.
  • Evaluating Learning Outcomes: A particular curriculum or instructional method is only as good as the outcomes it produces. Your studies in this course can teach you to assess programs and procedures to determine whether they’re producing desirable results. It can also help you learn how to approach adjustments when things aren’t working as well as you’d hoped.
  • Organizational Leadership: Ultimately, school systems are organizations, so you’ll need to consider team dynamics and administrative structure as you lead. This course may address communication, organizational culture, change management and ethical decision-making.
  • Research Design: A doctoral degree usually involves drawing on others’ research and conducting your own studies. You’ll probably take classes to help you understand the research process, learn from scholarly reports, choose an area of study, design informative experiments and present your findings.

You’ll probably have the opportunity to select elective classes, and these may tie in closely with your research area for your dissertation. If you choose a degree concentration, you may have fewer free electives and will instead take classes that are specific to that specialization track.

What Can I Do with a Doctorate in Education?

School roles.

School administration

School administration is one of the most popular career paths for this degree. You could become a principal in a K–12 school or work as the superintendent of the district. Superintendents are needed at the regional and state level as well.

Your doctoral degree may also prepare you to take leadership roles over specific school departments. For example, you could become an instructional coordinator, a special education director or a classroom technology director. You could also look for a job as a head teacher.

As an administrator, you could also oversee college operations. Potential roles for you may include president, vice president, provost or academic dean.

Programs for young children need strong leadership as well. You could head up a preschool facility or a daycare center. These roles might be done at the local level or in the upper management of a childcare chain. Tutoring programs have similar needs.

Writing curricula is another way that you can contribute to school settings. Good curriculum programs support both kids and teachers.

Community Roles

Museum Coordinator

Education continues outside the school walls. In organizations throughout your community, education experts are helping pass knowledge on to others.

A museum could be an interesting place for you to work. You could oversee programming to ensure that participants are engaged in meaningful experiences that help them interact with the exhibits or learn more about the world around them. Many museum programs are aimed at young learners, but outreach efforts can target adults as well.

Social services need this sort of expertise as well. Through community programs, people can learn about nutrition, childcare, job placement, literacy and other essential skills. Your work among local populations can better individual families as well as the whole community.

Education professionals work in government and public policy as well. Your expertise could be critical in determining future education policies or establishing new academic standards.

In a corporate setting, you could oversee training programs for new or experienced employees. Effective development programs can increase productivity, reduce waste and boost morale. You could also become a training consultant who works with many different companies.

Academic Roles

university professor

Although many doctoral graduates stay in professional practice, others choose an academic track for their careers. This is often done in university settings.

You could be a professor who teaches new students how to become teachers or to improve their skills in education. Your responsibilities might involve teaching undergraduate or graduate students.

Conducting research can be an important career path as well. Your studies may help schools learn more about reaching vulnerable populations, educating special-needs students, supporting teaching staff, engaging parents, keeping kids in school or evaluating curriculum choices.

The research you perform may also play a role in shaping public policy.

Certification and Licensure Following a Doctorate in Education Degree

Doctorate in Education Degree

For some positions, just getting a doctorate isn’t enough. You’ll also need to be licensed by your state.

Teachers, especially those in public schools, need to hold state teaching certification. The same goes for school administrators. Principals and superintendents must have administrator licensure. Rules and regulations vary by state, so you’ll need to consult your local board of education to learn how to fulfill the requirements.

You may need to be certified for teaching education at the college level as well. Because this job involves training future teachers, your state may want proof that you are fully qualified for that responsibility.

If you are interested in a licensure position, it’s a good idea to consider your state’s requirements before you begin your schooling. That way, you can make sure that the program you choose will provide the proper preparation.

Admission Requirements for Online PhD or Online EdD Programs

Online PhD Admissions Requirements

When applying to accelerated doctoral programs in education online, you’ll want to set yourself apart from the pack by submitting a strong application that showcases your strengths.

Doctoral programs often rely on a set of qualification standards for their applicants. You will certainly need to possess a bachelor’s degree, and you may need to have a master’s degree as well. The college may be looking for minimum GPA or test scores.

For some programs, you may need to have taken certain prerequisite classes or hold a teaching license in your state.

Admissions requirements vary among schools. You may need to submit an application packet that includes many of the following elements.

  • Transcripts: These should come from all of your previous college experiences at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Resume: Providing a record of your work history demonstrates how much professional experience you are bringing into the program.
  • Letters of reference: The admissions committee may want to see two or three letters. You should ask professional or academic colleagues to provide these reviews.
  • Personal statement: This essay should express your motivation for pursuing doctoral studies and address a potential research topic for your dissertation.
  • Test scores: Some doctoral programs require GRE scores as part of the admissions process. You may be able to qualify for a waiver if you have sufficient professional experience or high GPA scores.

In addition, there will probably be a basic application form that you must fill out. A fee may be required.

Be sure to start the application process early. It can take time to collect letters of recommendation and to craft your best essay. By beginning well in advance of the deadline, you won’t feel rushed.

After gathering your materials, submit them as soon as possible so you won’t have to worry about last-minute delays causing you to miss the application deadline.

Accreditation

Online Doctorate in Education Accreditation

For a college degree at any level, you should always choose a regionally accredited school. Whether you’re earning an undergraduate degree, a master’s or a doctorate, you need to know that you’re going to get a quality education. Regional accreditation serves as a seal of approval for a school’s academic offerings.

There are seven organizations in the U.S. that are authorized to grant regional accreditation. Your school might be accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) or one of the other accreditors.

Keep in mind that regional accreditation and national accreditation are two different things. Regional accreditation is a more rigorous process and is generally more respected by employers and other universities. For better post-graduation job prospects and the opportunity to transfer credits elsewhere, don’t settle for less than regional accreditation.

Some schools provide stipends for doctoral students who serve as research assistants or teach classes. Opportunities may vary for online programs, so talk to your school to learn more.

Scholarships and fellowships are monetary gifts that are available to some doctoral students. To earn these, you may need to distinguish yourself as the best applicant.

Scholarships are often intended to help with tuition, and fellowships may be geared toward funding research projects or educational travel. If you need additional assistance, consider private student loans.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest online doctorate.

In the age where online learning is becoming the norm, it comes as no surprise that more and more institutions are offering doctoral degrees online. Online education, by its nature, tends to be cheaper than in-person learning. To give you a better idea, some of the cheapest online doctoral programs are:

  • North Carolina A&T State University’s Doctor of Philosophy program  costs just $233 per credit, or $4,194 per year in annual tuition for in-state residents. However, tuition is significantly higher for residents of other states.
  • Columbia Southern University  offers doctorate programs at $435 per credit hour (or $391.50 for CSU Learning Partner members). The university tries to include textbooks  and eBooks in the total cost to lower your costs even more. Of course, this may not always be valid for those working toward doctorates.

It’s worth mentioning that many doctorates (even those online) offer financial aid opportunities to help you pay part or all of your tuition costs. It may be worth looking into programs where these opportunities exist.

Do Online Ph.D. Programs Provide Financial Aid?

If you want to earn your doctorate online, you can still apply for FAFSA  if the school or program accepts it. Consider online schools and programs that offer financial aid.

Most universities will offer scholarships and grants to qualifying students, whether they are attending in-person or online classes. For example, students at Missouri State University’s Doctor of Nursing program can apply for MSU’s annual scholarship.

Note: Although you can apply for various scholarships, grants, and other forms of financial aid, there are no guarantees that you’ll be able to get them.

Are Online Ph.D. Programs Legitimate?

Yes, there are a large number of legitimate online Ph.D. programs offered by reputable institutions. As with any higher-education program, it’s essential to check that the school is accredited before enrolling, as this is directly related to the value of any qualification. It’s also important to consider the institution’s reputation, which may influence potential future employers.

Can I Get a Ph.D. for Free?

Several fully-funded Ph.D. programs  offer doctorates with no out-of-pocket costs. These programs typically cover tuition and other expenses for the entire duration of the program through scholarships, grants, work-study, or a combination of these. Some schools even offer a stipend for living expenses.

However, many of these programs involve on-campus attendance. The options for fully-funded online doctoral programs are much more limited.

Key Takeaways

An online doctoral qualification not only helps you to advance your career but also encourages your personal development via critical thinking, leadership, and analytical skills. You’ll find that pursuing one of the cheapest online Ph.D. programs in 2022 will provide countless benefits!

Royal, Wippman Named Presidents-in-Residence

The Harvard Graduate School of Education has announced the latest members of its Judith Block McLaughlin Presidents-in-Residence (PIR) Program . Christina Royal, president of Holyoke Community College, and David Wippman, president of Hamilton College, will join HGSE for the 2024-25 academic year.

As presidents-in-residence, Wippman and Royal will teach and mentor students in HGSE’s higher education degree offerings, contributing to courses and providing valuable insight based on their long careers as university presidents. Senior Lecturer Francesca Purcell , faculty director of the Presidents-in-Residence Program, shared that the latest appointments offer unique insights from across the higher educational leadership landscape.

“Their varying perspectives on higher education leadership in the 21st century will enrich and deepen the learning experiences for our students in the residential higher education concentration and in the online higher education pathway,” Purcell said. “Christina has extensive experience leading community colleges and David brings insights leading a small liberal arts college with both boasting exceptional records advancing equity, opportunity, and excellence across the national higher education landscape. Importantly, they are thoughtful practitioners who will engage with and inspire HGSE students.”

Dozens of college and university presidents have taken part in the PIR Program since it was created in 2001. Royal is the first community college president, and she said she is “honored” by the distinction.

Christina Royal

“It is important for Harvard graduate students who are studying higher education to understand that community colleges are essential to the ecosystem of public post-secondary education and the vital role they play as an economic engine for society,” Royal said. “I’ve dedicated my career to higher education, with a particular focus on historically marginalized and racially minoritized students.”

Royal, who announced her departure as Holyoke’s president in the spring of 2023, made history as the school’s first woman of color president when she was appointed in 2017.

Her tenure saw the school launch programs promoting diversity and equity in higher education, working with the Holyoke Housing Authority and Westfield State University to support low-cost housing for students. Royal also advocated for programs to develop child care options for students with children and a student emergency fund for sudden expenses. Upon her retirement, an annual equity award at Holyoke was started and named in her honor.

“I’m looking forward to engaging in meaningful discussions with Harvard learners to deepen their understanding of the complexities of our American system of higher education,” said Royal. “Through these discussions, my hope is that they continue to unlearn the systems and structures that no longer work for us and re-learn ways to strengthen the ones that do.”

Royal earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Marist College in 1994 and received an M.A. in educational psychology in 2003. Royal received her Ph.D. in Instructional Design for Online Learning from Capella University in 2007. Her teaching career has included 15 years at Marist, another seven at Cuyahoga Community College and a stint as provost and chief academic officer at Inver Hills Community College.

Wippman, who has served as Hamilton’s president since 2016, announced his retirement at the end of the 2023-24 academic year. A recognized authority in international law, Wippman has taught about ethnic conflict, public international law, international criminal law, and international human rights.

His tenure at Hamilton has included the development of the College’s strategic plan, including a record-breaking Because Hamilton campaign to raise $400 million for College priorities, including $120 million for student scholarship aid. Wippman’s office prioritized diversity, equity and inclusion, and developed new programs to support student advising, digital fluency, and cross-boundary political thought and complex social issues.

Wippman was previously named dean of the University of Minnesota Law School in 2008. He also served as a professor and associate dean at Cornell Law School as well as vice provost for international relations at Cornell University.

“Serving as a President-in-Residence is a wonderful opportunity to work with and learn from future higher education leaders at a time when higher education leadership has become more challenging than ever,” Wippman said. “It's an honor to join a program with such distinguished faculty and talented students.”

David Wippman

A former U.S. Court of Appeals law clerk, Wippman served as a director in the National Security Council’s Office of Multilateral and Humanitarian Affairs, working on war crimes issues, the International Criminal Court, economic sanctions, and U.N. political issues. Wippman earned his bachelor's degree from Princeton University in 1976, a master’s degree from Yale in 1978, and his law degree from Yale Law School in 1982.

The Presidents-in-Residence program was fully endowed in 2023 and renamed in honor of former Senior Lecturer Judith Block McLaughlin, who retired at the end of the 2022-23 academic year. McLaughlin first started the Presidents-in-Residence program in 2001, and two decades later it continues to serve as an opportunity for Ed School students to gain new perspectives and learn lessons from groundbreaking educational leaders sharing their own experiences and insights.

“Fundamentally, students need to understand themselves as leaders, what drives their decision-making processes, and who they are as people, in order to effectively lead others,” Royal said. “We spend a lot of time educating students into a contemporary image of a leader, although the best preparation for leadership is learning to be authentically themselves and share their unique gifts, talents, and strengths with others.”

The juice isn’t worth the squeeze for many college majors, new report reveals: Lifetime earnings simply can’t keep up with the cost of degrees

30% of bachelor’s degrees cost more than what they pay out in a lifetime, a new analysis finds.

For many aspiring students, the decision to attend college comes with scary caveats, like years of unaffordable debt. Now there’s another thing to fear: Even if having a degree leads to higher earning potential down the line, a new analysis says about 30% of students won’t earn enough money to offset the price of school.

All things considered, the decision to attend college involves a lot of financial decisions a typical high school graduate might not have enough awareness about, including how to pay off education-related debt and how much they can expect to earn from the degree they choose. High schoolers are most interested in attending college to get a good job that will help them earn more money —but about a third of degree programs don’t lead to a return on investments people pay to attend, according to the new report from the Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity, which analyzed how much people spend on higher education versus how much they earn over their lifetimes.

The financial returns that come from pursuing higher education are worth it more often than not, the report states, but it’s highly dependent on the major a student chooses—and it’s creating a conflict where students are choosing between trade schools to optimize their financial returns or pursuing a field they might hate, but will pay well .

On average, a bachelor’s degree in fields like engineering, computer science, nursing and economics provide the biggest financial returns on investment, or earnings in relation to how expensive the degree is, according to the report. With an engineering degree, for example, a student can expect lifetime earnings of about $950,000, while a student who completes a nursing degree could rake in a lifetime earnings of about $618,000.

When choosing a college and degree program, the most important variable students should consider is how much they’ll earn, according to Preston Cooper, the lead author of the report.

“A high-earning career trajectory will deliver benefits for decades, while high tuition costs must be paid for a few years at most,” Cooper said.

Other fields, especially those in fine arts, offer significantly less financial returns. A bachelor’s degree in psychology, the humanities, or English and literature are among those with the lowest financial returns; on average, students who pursue a degree in fine arts actually lost about $88,000 over their lifetimes.

In these fields, Cooper said, there are still ways to ensure a college degree stays valuable. With an English major, for example, he said “there’s evidence that in combination with more tangible skills and marketing, graduates can improve the return on investments they get to improve the value of the degree they are getting out of college.”

Trade schools can offer higher returns on investment than a traditional bachelor’s degree because, according to Cooper, they are often shorter programs that cost less tuition and offer straight paths to higher paying jobs in fields like HVAC and construction. Still, he said, the lucrativeness of trade schools is dependent on the field, adding that a degree in cosmetology doesn’t offer the same returns.

Almost a quarter of four-year degree programs have a negative return on investment, the report found, as do 43% of two-year degree programs. For example, a bachelor’s degree in drama at the University of Southern California costs students over $160,000 over four years, but graduates of the program earn $10,000 less than they would if they got a job they didn’t need the degree for, the report found.

Meanwhile, other fields can be extremely lucrative. The report estimates that graduates of Princeton University’s computer engineering program could make a lifetime earnings of over $7 million.

Regardless of the field, college enrollment rates have been dropping for the past decade , according to a report by College Transitions, a data-driven blog by researchers and former school-admissions officers. Several factors are responsible for this trend, including the declining national birth rate , decreased immigration , the pandemic , and the rising price of college tuition . For students, who often prioritize their ability to earn money when making decisions about attending school, these financial challenges are giving way to additional stresses, like burnout and feeling unfulfilled at work.

A new study published by Journal of Business and Psychology found large gaps between people’s career interests and the country’s most in-demand jobs, which indicate the hottest jobs on the labor market drastically differ from what people are interested in doing.

The study, which used a national dataset of over 1.2 million U.S. residents and employment data from the Department of Labor, found that people are most interested in pursuing artistic jobs, but it’s one of the fields that’s least in demand, with only 2% of jobs on the market involving artistic interests. In contrast, the least popular job interest was described as systematic or detail-oriented work, which encompassed the most highly in-demand jobs.
