Overview of the Admission Process

Research activities at the Department of Computational and Data Sciences (CDS) are categorized into two streams:  Computational Science (CD S -CP)  and  Computer and Data systems (CD S -CS) . The admissions process is common to both streams.  The admission process for the Aug 2021 cycle comprises two phases. Phase I will be an  online written test  on the HackerEarth platform, which serves as a screening test and Phase II will be an  online oral  interview  only for the candidates qualified in the aptitude test conducted in Phase I.

Candidates shortlisted for the  online written test (Phase I) would have already received a call letter email from IISc with the date and the timing for your test (May 7, 10 AM – 11:30 AM). This online written test is of duration 75 minutes, which will serve as a screening test. This will have multiple choice and programming questions.  You would have already received an email from the CDS department on May 3rd about the online test instructions such as the test link, rules, guidelines, practice test, etc.

The Phase II  o nline o ral interview  is only for shortlisted students based on the online written screening test conducted in Phase I. The date and time of the online oral interview have already been mentioned in the call letter sent to you from IISc. Only shortlisted candidates need to attend the online oral interview.  Shortlisted candidates will be informed about their oral interview details along with a link to the interview -via- an email from CDS after the online written test.  This oral interview will be through video conferencing with a panel of CDS faculty using Microsoft Teams. The interview can last up to 45 minutes. The performance of the candidate in the online interview will contribute to their overall interview marks. The syllabus for the test and the interview is given below.

About a week before the oral interview, the shortlisted candidates will be sent an email from the CDS department to fill an  online student information Google form . This must be completed and submitted in order to participate in the oral interview. As part of this, they should choose up to three labs for which they will be considered. Labs accepting students for Aug 2021 and more details about the requirements for these labs are described in the CDS Admission brochure below.

Online Written  Screening Test

The Phase I online written test comprises of objective and programming test will be conducted using the HackerEarth online platform. Candidates will need a  desktop/laptop with  an  internet connection, Chrome, Firefox or Safari browser s , and a webcam . Candidates will be soon sent an email from the CDS department with a link to the online test a few days before the test date. The test will be enabled at the start of your session and will last for 75  mins.  It has to be completed in a single sitting. You will need to create a  free  HackerEarth  account  to take the test. You MUST use the  same email address  as the one used for your IISc Admissions Application. Please do this ahead of time. That email will also have another link to let you take a  practice test , test your browser and webcam, and get familiar with the HackerEarth platform. These practice questions are not from the test syllabus. Candidates may take the practice test as many times as they want. Candidates should get familiar with the programming IDE, compilation and testing interface of HackerEarth to ensure that the programming questions are attempted properly.

This online written test will have 9 questions. There will be 7 multiple-choice questions (each carrying 5 points) and 2 programming questions (with 5 and 10 points). The  topics  for the objective test are:

  • Combinatorics, Linear Algebra/Matrices, Probability, Plotting, Data Structures and Algorithms.

The programming languages that you can use are  C, C++  and  Java . The HackerEarth interface will allow you to type the program, compile it and run test cases, all within the browser. We will provide a basic code template for reading and writing the inputs and outputs for each problem. The candidates should focus on the actual code logic, and brush up on concepts such as if/then/else conditions and for loops.  Students are encouraged to first solve the problems that they are comfortable with and then move on to more difficult problems.  A sample test is available here .

Online oral  Interview over Video Conference

Students who qualify in the online screening test will attend an oral interview over a video conference before a CDS faculty committee. We will use  Microsoft Te ams . Details will be provided separately over an email with a link to join. In the oral interview, you will be questioned on the following basic topics, and on advanced topics that are based on your lab preferences:

Basic  Topics : Linear Algebra; Probability & Statistics; Programming, Data Structures, Algorithms; Numerical Methods; Ordinary Differential Equations; Discrete Mathematics.  Final year undergraduate level preparation is required.

Advanced Topics:   You will be questioned on the topics related to labs selected in the student information Google form. The topics for each lab and the prior training expected are listed below. Candidates choosing a lab must be prepared on  at least one  of the lab-related interview topics.

Note: Most labs give preference to applicants for the PhD program over the M.Tech (Research) program. Some labs may not even take any students for the M.Tech (Research) program. Students with a B.E./B.Tech. degree are also eligible to apply for the PhD program.

Candidates for the PhD program should prepare well on their fundamentals, come with a focus and knowledge of the research areas they would like to target in their PhD and have clarity on the preferred lab(s) and the kind of work done in them. Review the research topics and the papers from the labs you are interested in.  The list of labs that are admitting students for Aug 2021 is mentioned in the CDS Admission brochure below:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) currently offers Ph.D admissions to students with a qualifying Master’s (M.Tech or M.E or MS) or Bachelor’s degree (B.Tech or B.E) in the relevant field. In order to attract fresh and talented students with bachelor’s degrees, many institutions, including IITs in the country, have started various Dual Degree programmes such as MS(R) + Ph.D and M.Tech + Ph.D, etc. Such Dual Degree programmes are well received by various industries and educational institutions in the recruitment of their faculty in comparison with a candidate having a Ph.D degree directly after a B.Tech or B.E degree. Many departments of IIT Guwahati have been successfully running the above Dual Degree programmes. In view of the various advantages of the above Dual Degree programmes, the department of mechanical engineering has introduced a Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme with five specialisations in M.Tech to students having a B.Tech or B.E as their qualifying degree. The proposed dual degree programme is in line with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP-2020), with a provision for exiting the programme with a M.Tech degree.

Rules and Regulations of Department of Mechanical Engineering

1) Department of Mechanical Engineering offers five specializations to the students of Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) to obtain their M.Tech degree in (a) Machine Design, (b) Fluids and Thermal Engineering, (c) Manufacturing Science and Engineering, (d) Aerodynamics and Propulsion, and (e) Computational Mechanics. This programme is offered only to students who have B. A student seeking admission to the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme should have a valid GATE Score. Admissions for these students shall follow the admission rules of the institute for regular Ph.D candidates.

4) At the time of filing the application against the institute’s PhD admissions’ advertisement (July session), a candidate needs to opt for the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme. Candidates who have not opted for this programme and apply directly to the PhD programme are not eligible to enrol in the proposed Dual Degree. Similarly, candidates (with B.Tech or B.E as qualifying degree) who apply for PhD admissions in the December session are also not eligible to enrol in the proposed Dual Degree and hence they do not get the M.Tech degree. Such students then can have B.Tech or B. E + Ph.D degrees.

5) A student admitted to the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) works on a full-time basis in the institute and receives an assistant-ship from the institute or any other recognized funding agency.

6) Admitted students of the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme shall follow the ordinances of the Ph.D programme and other rules of the institute.

7) The maximum duration of the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme is seven years from the date of admission. After successful completion of the defence examination, the student will be awarded both the M Tech and Ph.D. degrees.

8) Students in the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme must do the prescribed course work for three semesters. The requirements for the course work will be a minimum of 12 PG-level courses with a minimum aggregate of 72 credits spanning over the three semesters. Please refer to Annexure-A for a detailed course structure of the department of mechanical engineering in various specializations. After successful completion of the Ph.D, a student will also be awarded M.Tech degree in the specialization in which he/she does the prescribed course work as mentioned in the Annexure-B.

9) Exit Policy from the Dual degree programme and award of M.Tech degree. Awarding Master’s degree only: A student can discontinue the Dual degree program and leave the institute with M.Tech degree as per the Master’s + Ph.D ordinances which is as follows: After successful completion of the course work, comprehensive examination, and SOAS by the student, should the Doctoral Committee (DC) feel that the progress of the student is not satisfactory at the time of the first annual progress review, the DC may recommend the submission of a master's thesis, suggesting the volume of work to be completed for the master’s degree. The student will submit the suggested master's thesis and defend the same. The procedure for the submission of a master's thesis and the conduct of an oral examination are as per the relevant clauses of MTech/MDes/MS Ordinances. In that case, the student will receive only the master’s degree as per the enrollment. The department invokes this option only in the rarest of rare cases.
