प्रस्तावना :-

मनुष्य एक सामाजिक प्राणी है। उसे अपना जीवन जीने के लिए परिवार व समाज की जरूरत होती है। उसे अपने कार्य करने के लिए हमेशा ही दूसरों पर निर्भर रहना पड़ता है।

मनुष्य अपने सभी कार्य समूह में रहकर पूर्ण करता है। किसी भी काम को पूर्ण करने के लिए उस समूह को एक साथ मिलकर काम करना पड़ता है, इसे ही एकता कहते है।

एकता एक ऐसी शक्ति है, जो हर परिस्थिति में समूह को एकजुट रखती है व समूह को टूटने नही देती है। जिससे उस समूह के सफल होने की संभावनाएं बढ़ जाती है।

एकता में बल है?

किसी भी समूह का एक साथ मिलकर एकजुटता के साथ काम करना उसे सफलता तक अवश्य ले जाता है। एक कहावत सदियों से चलती आ रही है कि “एकता में बल होता है”।

यह कहावत पूरी तरह से सत्य है। एकता एक मात्र ऐसा गुण है जो एक समूह को एक साथ मिलकर काम करने की प्रेरणा देती है। जब एक समूह या परिवार पर विपदा आती है तो एकता का ही गुण परिवार को बिखरने नही देता है। वह परिवार को एकजुट रखता है।

सभी को यह अहसास दिलाता है कि वह अकेला नही है, उसके साथ उसका पूरा परिवार है। जिससे मनुष्य में कठिनाइयों से लड़ने की हिम्मत आती है और वह कठिनाइयों से बाहर निकलने के बारे में सोचता है व उसके लिए प्रयत्न करता है।

एकता में रहने के लाभ :-

एकता में रहने के अनगिनत लाभ है। एकता में रहने से एक व्यक्ति को समय पर सहायता व समर्थन मिलता है। जिससे वह किसी भी परिस्थिति से आसानी से बाहर निकल सकता है।

इसके साथ ही उसे समय-समय पर अच्छा मार्गदर्शन मिलता है, जिससे उसे सही चुनाव करने में मदद मिलती है। एकता में रहने से एक मनुष्य का उचित व निरंतर विकास होता है।

एकता में रहने से मनुष्य को अपने ही समूह के लोगों को देखकर कुछ अच्छा करने की प्रेरणा मिलती है। एकता में रहने से सम्पूर्ण समूह की शक्ति एक साथ रहती है। सभी एक साथ मिलकर काम करते है। एकता से किसी भी उद्देश्य को आसानी से साथ मिलकर पूरा किया जा सकता है।

एकता को बनाए रखने के लिए आवश्यक बातें :-

एकता को बनाए रखने के लिए व और अधिक मजबूत करने के लिए सबसे जरूरी है कि समूह का आपस में विश्वास हो। एकता को बनाए रखने में समूह के लोगों का बहुत बड़ा योगदान होता है। प्रत्येक समूह में एक नेता होता है।

सभी सदस्यों का उस पर पूर्ण विश्वास होना चाहिए। सभी उसके फैसलों का पूरी तरह से आदर करें। साथ ही नेता को भी इस बात का ध्यान रखना चाहिए कि उसके फैसले से हर सदस्य संतुष्ट रहे और वह सदस्यों की जरूरतों का भी ध्यान रखें।

एकता मनुष्य को एक समूह में काम करना सिखाती है। जिससे उनमें बहुत से गुणों का विकास होता है। एकता से किसी भी काम को आसानी से किया जा सकता है। एकता के मूल्य को समझना बहुत आवश्यक है। एकता के बिना समूह के लोग एक दिशा में काम नही कर पाते है।

Essay on Unity is Strength in Hindi – एकता में शक्ति – संगठन में शक्ति पर निबंध : संगठन में ही शक्ति है। एकता में ही बल है। पांच उंगलियां मिल कर ही हाथ बनाती है। हाथ के पंजे में रचनात्मक शक्ति है, वह कारीगर है, वह मज़दूर है, वह लेखक है, वह चित्रकार है, वह अध्यापक है, वह सैनिक है। अलग-अलग उंगलियों की शक्ति बंट जाती है। समाज का विकास इसी भावना से हुआ उस का अस्तित्व इसी भावना पर टिका है। अति प्राचीन काल में मनुष्य। अलग-अलग झुंडो में निरीह पशुओं जैसा जीवन व्यतीत करते थे। समूह एकत्र हुए संगठित हुए समाज बना, सभ्यता का विकास हुआ। सुरक्षा बढ़ी, सुविधाएं, बढ़ीं।

मानव मूल्यों और सामाजिक परंपराओं का विकास हुआ एक दूसरे के लिए त्याग, सहयोग, दान-पुण्य धर्म-कर्म की मान्यताएं विकसित हुई। जहां संगठन है वहां सुख है और जहां विखराव है वह कलह है, दुःख है भय है, संशय और असुरक्षा है।  परिवार समाज की सबसे छोटी इकाई है। इस इकाई का आधार एकता का सिद्धांत है।

माता-पिता की एकत्व भावना, बढ़े-बूढ़ों की दायित्व भावना परिवार के बालकों को ठोस भावनात्मक आधार देती है। बच्चे अपने आपको सुरक्षित पाते है उनका विकास सहज रुप से होता है। इसके विपरीत जिस परिवार में एकता नहीं है| वहां तरह-तरह के दुःख, मानसिक तनाव और अरुचियां विद्यमान रहती हैं। समाज में लड़ने वाले परिवार की प्रतिष्ठा घट जाती है।

एकता को भावना का उदय निश्चय बूंखार पशुओं और प्राकृतिक विपदाओं का सामना करने की आवश्यकता में से हुआ होगा। मनुष्य सामाजिक पशु है। वह अकेला रह ही नहीं सकता। अपनी दैनिक आवश्यकता बन गई है। आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति के लिए, विचारों के आदान-प्रदान के लिए दूसरों पर निर्भर रहना पड़ता है। जैसे-जैसे सभ्यता और संस्कृति का विकास हुआ विशेषीकरण बढ़ता गया और परस्पर निर्भरता भी बढ़ती गई। अब कोई भी व्यक्ति अपनी सैकड़ों आवश्यकताएं पूरी करने के लिए सैकड़ों व्यक्तियों पर प्रत्यक्ष या अप्रत्यक्ष रुप से निर्भर होता है अतः एकता की भावना आज बुनियादी  एकता का अभिप्राय यह है कि हम लोकहित के लिए एक साथ रह कर  कार्य करें। इसका यह अर्थ कदापि नहीं है कि हम विनाशकारी कार्यों में भी एकता की भावना की कल्पना करें।

एकता का अर्थ ही रचनात्मक सामूहिकता है। जिस एकता में सृजनात्मक और रचनात्मक मूल्यों की अनदेखी की जाए वह एकता विनाशकारी शक्तियों और प्रवृतियों का ही पोषण करती है। यह एकता समाज के लिए और व्यक्ति विशेष के लिए घातक सिद्ध होगी। एकता का अर्थ कदापि नहीं कि हम सामाजिक नियमों का सामूहिक उल्लंघन करें, कानूनों को अनुचित ढंग से तोड़े और समाज में अराजकता फैलाएं या अनुशासन हीनता का वातावरण तैयार करें। आजकल प्रायः देखने में आता है कि ‘एकता’ शब्द को कुछ स्वार्थी लोग केवल निजी स्वार्थों के लिए प्रयुक्त कर रहे हैं और आन्तरिक एकता के सूत्रों को तोड़ रहे हैं। एकता तो ऐसी पवित्र शक्ति है जो मानव मात्र के कल्याण के लिए सज्जनता के सिद्धांत पर टिकी है, उसकी स्थिति मानव ह्रदय में स्वभाविक रुप से बनी हुई है।

एकता की भावना विश्वव्यापी है। द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के बाद संसार में शांति और सुरक्षा के लिए कुछ राष्ट्रों ने मिलकर संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ की स्थापना की। इस विश्व संस्था का मूल उद्देश्य ही यह था कि सदस्य राष्ट्र मिल जुल कर सँसार में शांति के लिए प्रयास करें। विध्वंसकारी अस्त्र-शस्त्रों का निर्माण रोका जा सके। राष्ट्रों के बीच विश्वास और मैत्री की भावना स्थापित की जाए। इससे अनेक क्षेत्रों में इस विश्व संस्था ने उल्लेखनीय और सराहनीय कार्य किया है| हाल ही में इराक की अमानवीय अकांक्षाओं पर रोक लगाने और विश्वयुद्ध की विभीषिका को टालने में इसने रचनात्मक भूमिका अदा की है। कई राष्ट्रों के मिले-जुले प्रयास, सेवाएं और साधन प्राप्त करके इसने ‘विश्व मैत्री की भावना को मजबूत किया है।

एकता किसी भी राष्ट्र के उत्थान का बुनियादि आधार होता है। एकता के बल पर ही विश्व समाज में वह प्रतिष्ठा प्राप्त करता है। इन्हीं दिनों सोवियत संघ के टूटने ने उसे दूसरी विश्व शक्ति के गौरवपूर्ण स्थान से नीचे गिराया है। अतः एकता में शक्ति है, संगठन में प्रतिष्ठा है| इस उद्देश्य को प्रकट करने वाली कई कथाएं प्रचलित हैं जैसे, कबूतर और जाल ‘बूढ़ा पिता और उसके चार बेटे” आदि। इस लिए किसी ने ठीक ही कहा है कि एकता में बल है तथा फूट में  विनाश।

The phrase, “Unity is Strength”, is more than just a proverb. It has been proven since the beginning of mankind. When divided, individuals have failed in achieving what they had aspired. But together, they have been able to conquer a lot more. Take a look at your local history. You will surely notice how groups of people have stood for a certain cause, and because of their strength, their fight has had a powerful effect. Unity is Strength implies that if we stand together we shall always be stronger mentally, physically and emotionally. As Mattie Stepanek elaborated, “Unity is Strength…when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved”. Unity is strength means staying united in all situations. It has a great value in all walks of life. When we are united then we can surmount any challenges and accomplish any goal. The development of our society and country depends on this spirit. In fact civilization came into existence because of the unity among people. In order to lead a peaceful and fulfilling life, it is very important for people to stay united. Unfortunately, this word unity has become confined to motivational and inspirational talks. People in this world are so blinded by power and success that they want to be ahead of their relatives, colleagues and friends. They get into personal and professional rivalries with each other most of the times. They do not understand that they can move ahead and enhance their skills if they share their knowledge and help each other. When we go against our own team members and begin to compete with them in an office setting, people from the other teams or departments benefit from the situation.

Another reason why people fall apart is because of mistrust. This is especially true when it comes to a husband and wife relationship. Couples are often seen doubting each other. They question each other for the smallest of things and doubt them of cheating or lying. Many times outsiders take advantage of the situation. They fuel the doubt and create conflict between the two to fulfil their own selfish motives. This does not only have a negative impact on the two but also on their kids. If the husband and wife stay united and defend each other no one can create a rift between them. Unity is an important factor even within a family and social group. Family members, who stick together and support each other, tend to have lasting bonds. This enables them to solve each other's problems in a valuable manner. If there is no unity in friendship, cracks begin to form in the foundation and could potentially lead to misunderstandings. French leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, believed that “There are only two forces that unite men - fear and interest.” However, the term interest, here, is roughly used. People can be united because of their need for a sense of belonging, which has nothing to do with common interests. They could also be united because of a shared history or past, as is the case with citizens of a nation. A lot of social groups have been able to get desired results because they stand united. Their attempts are directed towards a single goal, which increases the chances of success. In many families, brothers and sisters fight with each other and develop rivalry. This often happens due to the division of property or family business. In such a case, the outsiders take advantage of the situation and end up grabbing a large share. If the siblings stand united they shall be able to grow the business better with their joint efforts and skills.

The proverb does not only hold good when it comes to professional and personal relationships but also for the society and nation as a whole. The localities and societies where people stay united are loved by all. People living here meet and greet their neighbours with smile, help each other out in crises, guard their neighbour’s house when they are away and are always ready to help one another. They celebrate all the functions together and conduct other social gatherings every now and then. In today’s times, when most people are suffering from loneliness and depression such a neighbourhood can be a boon. It is also good for the all round development of the kids who often feel lonely in the nuclear family system. The chances of thefts and robberies in such societies are also low. Same goes for the nation as a whole. If we stop fighting over trivial matters among ourselves, we can never grow stronger as a nation. Similarly, various nations around the globe are busy fighting with each other in order to prove they are better than the other. Today, every nation has nuclear weapons, so many terrorist organizations have been formed and there are so many corrupt people trying to pull each other down. People are living in constant fear. If we stop all these mal-practices and become united the world would become a much better place to live. India’s freedom struggle is one of the best examples of “Unity is Strength”. The British government used the policy of divide and rule to strengthen its ground in India. But the citizens of the country soon understood this manipulation tactic. They all stood together and drove the British out of the country.

Factors like trust, encouragement, understanding and love help maintain unity among people. As long as good thoughts motivate people, they will stand united and be stronger for it. The moment there is a weak link in the group, everything collapses. Remember to stand tall against all hardships. There is no doubt about the fact that our strength lies in unity. Several stories as well as real life incidences have proved the same in the past. We must thus follow the path of unity. We should think beyond petty interests and work united for much broader goals of bringing prosperity and progress in our society and country.

Hindi Story on Unity is Strength

एक जंगल में हीरा और मोती नाम के दो बैल रहते थे। दोनों में पक्का याराना था। दोनों एक ही साथ जंगल में चरते और एक ही साथ मिलकर आराम करते। अगर कभी कोई मुसीबत आती, तो दोनों एक-दूसरे का साथ निभाते। वक्त बीतने के साथ-साथ उनकी दोस्ती की कहानी पूरे जंगल में फैलती चली जा रही थी। जंगल तरह-तरह के जंगली जानवरों से भरा हुआ था, उसी में शेरसिंह नाम का एक शेर भी रहता था।

शेर सिंह बहुत बलवान और क्रूर था। वह रोज शिकार करने के लिये जानवरों को मारा करता था। इसी से सभी जानवर उससे बहुत डरते थे। शेर सिंह ने कई बार हीरा और मोती का भी शिकार करने की कोशिश की, लेकिन वह सफल नहीं हुआ। क्योंकि एक तो दोनों बैल ऊँचे डील-डौल के, स्वस्थ और बलवान थे, दूसरे वह हमेशा मिलकर शेर सिंह के हमले का सामना करते थे।

एक बार उसने हीरा को अकेले पाकर उसे दबोच भी लिया था, कि तभी उसकी पुकार सुनकर मोती दौड़ा चला आया और दोनों दोस्तों ने अपने सींगों की मार से उसे बेहाल करके भागने पर मजबूर कर दिया। शेर सिंह के दो हमले होने पर फिर दोनों बैल एक साथ ही घास चरते थे, जिससे उसे दोबारा उन पर कभी हमला करने का मौका नहीं मिल पाया।

लेकिन दोनों बैल उसकी नजरों में खटक रहे थे और वह किसी भी तरह से उनका शिकार करना चाहता था। चूँकि वह सामने आकर तो उनसे लड़ नहीं सकता था, इसलिये उसने एक चाल चलकर अपना काम निकालने का निश्चय किया। शेर सिंह ने बनावटी स्नेह और मित्रता दिखाते हुए किसी तरह मोती बैल से दोस्ती कर ली। फिर धीरे-धीरे वह हीरा के खिलाफ मोती के कान भरने लगा।

जब भी शेर सिंह मोती से मिलता, वह उसे बरगलाते हुए कहता – “मोती भाई! देखो तुम्हारा दोस्त कितना स्वार्थी है। वह हरी-हरी घास तो खुद खा जाता है और सूखी घास तुम्हारे लिये छोड़ देता है। मोती बैल थोडा कम समझदार था, वह शेर सिंह की बातों में आ गया। उसके बहकावे में आकर अब मोती, ने हीरा से दूर जाकर घास चरना शुरू कर दिया था।

हीरा ने कई बार ऐसा करने का कारण जानना चाहा, लेकिन मोती ने कभी असली बात जाहिर नहीं होने दी। क्योंकि शेर सिंह ने अपनी दोस्ती का वास्ता देकर उसे ऐसा करने से मना कर दिया था। धीरे-धीरे मोती और हीरा के बीच की दूरियाँ बढती चली गयी और दोनों एक-दूसरे से कटने लगे। चूँकि काफी समय से शेर सिंह ने उन पर कभी हमला नहीं किया था, इसीलिये मोती उसे अपना दोस्त समझने लगा था।

शेर सिंह के बहकावे में आकर अब मोती घास चरने के लिये काफी दूर निकल जाया करता था। एक दिन जब वह घास चरने में व्यस्त था, तो उसी समय शेर सिंह ने चुपके से आकर उसकी गर्दन दबोच ली। चूँकि उसे शेर पर पूरा विश्वास हो चला था, इसीलिये उसके आने पर भी मोती अक्सर बेखबर ही रहता था। लेकिन मोती का, शेर सिंह पर विश्वास करने उसे बहुत भारी पड़ा।

शेर ने उसकी गर्दन इस तरह से दबोच रखी थी कि मोती के मुँह से अपने बचाव में आवाज तक नहीं निकल पायी और फिर थोड़ी ही देर में शेर ने उसे मार डाला। आज शेर सिंह बहुत खुश था, क्योंकि आज उसे उसका मनपसंद शिकार जो मिल गया था। मोती को मारने के कुछ दिन बाद ही उसने हीरा को भी मार डाला, क्योंकि अकेला रह जाने के कारण, अब वह शेर सिंह का सामना नहीं कर सकता था।

तो देखा, आपने एकता के बल के अभाव में कैसे शेर सिंह ने दोनों बैलों को अपना निवाला बना लिया। अगर वह शेर के बहकावे में आकर अलग नहीं हुए होते, तो दोनों जिन्दा होते। लेकिन आपस में पड़ी फूट और एकता की शक्ति खंडित होने से ही, दोनों को अपनी जान से हाथ धोना पड़ा।

पशु जगत से लेकर मानव जगत तक हर क्षेत्र में एकता की आवश्यकता है। अंग्रेजी में इसे कहा जाता है – ‘Union is Strength’ कि किसी भी स्थिति का सामना करने के लिए एकता अपरिहार्य है। जो काम आम तौर पर एक व्यक्ति द्वारा संभव नहीं होता, उसे पांच लोग आसानी से हासिल कर सकते हैं। एकजुटता से समाज का निर्माण। जब एकता का अभाव होता है तो राष्ट्र पराधीन की बेड़ियों में कैद हो जाता है। समाज के प्रारंभिक विकास से ही एकता की आवश्यकता महसूस की गई है। समाज का निर्माण मनुष्यों द्वारा हिंसक लोगों या हिंसक जानवरों के हमलों से खुद को बचाने के लिए किया गया है। समाज का तात्पर्य अनेक लोगों के एक साथ एकत्रित होने से है। मानव समाज द्वारा सामूहिक रूप से असंभव को संभव बनाने के उदाहरण भी मौजूद हैं। एकता के बल पर साबियन राष्ट्र ने कभी भी किसी भी क्षेत्र में हार का स्वाद नहीं चखा।

एकता की आवश्यकता एवं अर्थ

राष्ट्र, व्यक्ति और समाज के विकास के लिए एकता की आवश्यकता है। पानी की बूंदों के योग से भी महासागरों का निर्माण हो सकता है। हाथी जैसे विशाल जानवर को भी कुछ धागों से बांधा जा सकता है। एक छड़ी आसानी से तोड़ी जा सकती है। लेकिन एक साथ 8-10 छड़ी को एक साथ तोड़ना आसान नहीं है। हालाँकि अणु या परमाणु बहुत छोटे होते हैं, लेकिन उनका योग एक पल में पृथ्वी को पूरी तरह से नष्ट कर सकता है। छोटे-छोटे धूल के कण मिलकर एक ब्रह्माण्ड का निर्माण कर सकते हैं। एकता से असंभव को संभव बनाया जा सकता है। सामाजिक जीवन में इसके अनेक उपयोग हैं। इसी एकता के कारण भारत शक्तिशाली ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य से मुक्त हुआ।

एकता के महत्व को रूस के बोल्शेविक आंदोलन या फ्रांसीसी क्रांति में दर्शाया गया है। आज यदि जापान विश्व में आर्थिक रूप से समृद्ध हुआ है तो यह उसकी एकता के संकल्प के कारण ही संभव हुआ है। अतीत में अंग्रेज राष्ट्र अपनी एकता के कारण विश्व का सबसे शक्तिशाली राष्ट्र माना जाता था। प्राचीन भारत ने इसी एकता के कारण विश्व के सर्वश्रेष्ठ राष्ट्रों में से एक के रूप में अपनी प्रतिष्ठा अर्जित की। हालाँकि भारत में कई धर्मों, जातियों और विचारधाराओं के लोग बसे हैं, लेकिन यह उनके बीच की एकता ही है जिसने उन्हें एक साथ बांध रखा है। व्यक्तिगत, सामाजिक एवं राष्ट्रीय जीवन में एकता का महत्व सदैव माना गया है।

एकता की अभाव से हानि

एकता की कमी आपदा को आमंत्रित करती है। अगर हम भारत के इतिहास का विश्लेषण करें तो हमें इसके कई उदाहरण मिलेंगे। 1192 ई. के द्वितीय तिरोरी युद्ध में पृथ्वीराज चौहान की पराजय और मृत्यु उनके घरेलू शत्रु जयचंद्र के कारण ही संभव हुई। हिंदू राजाओं की कमजोरी का फायदा उठाकर मुहम्मद गोरी भारत को जीतने में सफल रहा। यदि देश के लोगों में एकता न हो तो विदेशी शत्रु आक्रमण कर देश के टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर देते हैं। इसी प्रकार यदि परिवार के सदस्यों में एकता न हो तो पड़ोसी या शत्रु परिवार को नष्ट कर देता है। चीन और पाकिस्तान के साथ भारत के युद्ध के दौरान भारतीयों में एकता थी। लेकिन भारत की मौजूदा स्थिति बेहद चिंताजनक है। आज खालिस्तान आंदोलन चल रहा है। अलग गोरखा राज्य की मांग हो रही है। पंजाब, जम्मू-कश्मीर और असम में आतंकी गतिविधियां गंभीर स्थिति में हैं। इससे बड़े पैमाने पर राष्ट्रीय हित प्रभावित हो रहा है। जिस वजह से पाकिस्तान से अलग होकर एक और अलग बांग्लादेश का निर्माण हुआ, कुछ वही वजहें आज भारत में पैदा हो गई हैं। कई लोग यह नहीं समझते कि संकीर्ण स्वार्थ, आत्म-सम्मान की कमी ही राष्ट्रीय एकता का परिणाम है। देश की एकता ख़तरे के कगार पर है क्योंकि साम्प्रदायिकता और संकीर्ण क्षेत्रवाद आज भारत की राजनीति को काफी हद तक प्रभावित कर रहे हैं। अतीत में, प्राचीन ऋषियों ने भारत की कल्पना एक परिवार के रूप में की थी। एकता की कमी के कारण ही भारत की अतीत में हार हुई थी। इसलिए हमें अतीत से सीखने और वर्तमान में भविष्य की तैयारी करने की जरूरत है।

आज इस बात से कोई इंकार नहीं कर सकता कि “एकता ही ताकत है”। एकता से सभी प्रकार की बाधाओं को आसानी से दूर किया जा सकता है। यह देशों, राष्ट्रों और व्यक्तियों को एकजुट करता है। इंसान के मन में एकता साहस और प्रेरणा से भर देता है। देश के विकास और प्रगति के लिए इसकी भूमिका बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है। यदि विश्व का प्रत्येक मनुष्य मानवीय विचारों से प्रकाशित होकर एकता के सूत्र में बंध जाए तो विश्व की सभी समस्याएँ क्षण भर में समाप्त हो सकती हैं। व्यक्ति के मन से अविश्वास दूर हो कर और वह दोस्ती और प्यार के बंधन में बंध जाता है। इसलिए प्रत्येक मनुष्य को एकता की इस भावना से प्रेरित होकर देश, जाति और व्यक्ति की भलाई के लिए कार्य करना चाहिए।

एक बार कार्तिकी अमावस्या के घनघोर अंधकार में प्रकाश की आवश्यकता पड़ी। सूर्य से प्रार्थना की, उनने इस आपत्तिकालीन अनुरोध को अस्वीकार कर दिया। चंद्रमा ने भी असमर्थता प्रकट की। कोई उपाय न देखकर एक दीपक ने जलना आरंभ किया।

दूसरे बुझे हुओं ने सोचा जो एक कर सकता है, वह दूसरा क्यों न करें? जब बुराई छूत की तरह फैल सकती है तू अच्छाई की लहरें भी एक दूसरे को सहारा देते हुए आगे क्यों नहीं बढ़ सकतीं? दीपक एक दूसरे के निकट आते गए। जलों ने बुझों को जलाया और नगण्य सी कीमत वाले दीपको की पंक्ति देखते देखते सर्वत्र जलने लगी।

कार्तिक की अमावस्या जुगनूओं की चादर ओढ़कर सूर्य – पत्नी जैसी गौरवान्वित होकर इठलाने लगी। सभी ने दीपमालिका की जय बोली और उस दिन से वह सहकारी आदर्शवादिता महालक्ष्मी की तरह पूजी जाने लगी।

कहानी से सीख – छोटे के छोटे काम भी मिलजुल कर बड़ों के बड़े कामों की प्रतिद्वंदिता कर सकते हैं। तिनको से रस्सा बटा जा सकता है। धागे मिलकर वस्त्र बनते हैं। ईंटें परस्पर जुड़कर महल खड़े करती हैं। सीकों से बुहारी व बूंदों से घट भरता है। अणुओं के समन्वय से विराट की संरचना हुई है।

इन सब पर विश्वास करने पर यह सोचने में तनिक भी कठिनाई नहीं होनी चाहिए छोटो में सज्जनता का दौर चल पड़े तो उनके संयुक्त प्रयासों का प्रतिफल समष्टि को सतयुगी परिस्थितियों से भरपूर बना सकता है। बड़ों की प्रतीक्षा में बैठे रहने की अपेक्षा यही अच्छा है कि छोटे लोग मिलजुल कर नवसृजन के प्रयास करें। यही युग की मांग भी है।

वह रात बड़ी भयावह थी। पहाड़ों के ऊपर तूफानी घटाएं घिर आई थी। बिजली कड़कने लगी। बरसात इतनी हुई की नाले भर गए और दरिया से जा मिले। दरिया नीचे घाटियों में होता हुआ तेजी से बढ़ने लगा। उसके तेज बहाव में हर चीज को अकरांत कर दिया। उथल-पुथल में एक चट्टान से एक बहुत बड़ा पत्थर टूट गया। वह कुछ देर भयभीत सा तंग पहाड़ी सड़क के ऊपर लटका रहा। फिर एक भयानक आवाज के साथ सड़क के बीचो बीच आ गिरा।

रात बीती, सुबह हुई। आकाश पर चमकीला सूर्य निकला। ओस की बूंदे पेड़ के पत्तों पर जगमगाने लगी। घास जो दब गई थी, फिर सिर उठाने लगी। इतने में गांव से एक छकड़ा प्रकट हुआ। उसे नुकीले सींगों वाले दो काले बैल खींच रहे थे। छकड़े के अंदर एक आदमी बैठा अपनी धुन में कोई पहाड़ी लोक गीत गा रहा था। वह गांव का दुकानदार था। जो अपनी दुकान का सामान खरीदने शहर जा रहा था । मोड़ पर पहुंचकर, जहां बड़ा पत्थर पड़ा हुआ था, उसने छकड़ा रोक दिया। दरअसल पत्थर ने पूरा रास्ता रोक रखा था। बाई और दरिया बह रहा था और दायीं और ऊँची चट्टानों ने अपना सीना ताने खड़ी थीं।

दुकानदार पहले तो छकड़े में बैठा थोड़ी देर सिर खुजाता रहा। फिर नीचे उतरकर पत्थर के पास गया। पत्थर को हटाने के लिए उसने कई तरकीब आजमाईं, पर पत्थर हिला तक नहीं। यह मुझसे नहीं हटेगा। उसने सोचा किसी ऐसे आदमी की प्रतीक्षा करनी पड़ेगी, जो मुझसे ज्यादा शक्तिशाली हो। यह सोचकर वह धरती पर बैठ गया। उसने एक लकड़ी उठाई और उसे धरती पर फूल पत्तियां बनाने लगा।

थोड़ी देर बाद एक दूसरा छकड़ा वहां आ पहुंचा। उस पर जलाने की लकड़ियां लदी हुई थीं। लकड़ी वाले ने दुकानदार से कहा, अरे भाई, तुमने अपना छकड़ा सड़क के बीचो बीच क्यों खड़ा कर रखा है? इसे एक तरफ करो, ताकि मैं गुजर सकूं। मुझे जल्दी है। दुकानदार बोला तुम्हें जल्दी है, तो पहले यहां आकर यह चट्टान हटाओ।

कैसी चट्टान? उसने हैरत से पूछा। यहां आओ और देखो। छकड़ों के आगे पड़ी हुई है। लकड़ी वाले ने नीचे उतर कर पत्थर को देखा और फिर अपनी आस्तीनें समेट कर पत्थर को दाएं-बाएं हिलाने की कोशिश करने लगा । पर पत्थर नहीं मिला। यह अपने वश की बात नहीं, वह सिर हिलाता हुआ बोला, हमें किसी शक्तिशाली आदमी की प्रतीक्षा करनी पड़ेगी। वही हमारा रास्ता साफ करेगा।

लकड़ी वाला दुकानदार के पास जाकर बैठ गया। अभी ज्यादा देर नहीं हुई थी की एक घोड़ा गाड़ी वाला वहां पहुंचा। वह काफी बूढ़ा था, उसकी कमर झुकी हुई थी।वह काफी बेदर्दी से घोड़े पर चाबुक बरसा रहा था। जब उसे पता चला कि दोनों छकड़े यहां क्यों खड़े हुए हैं, तो वह अनाप-शनाप बकता हुआ अपनी गाड़ी से उतरा और थोड़ी देर पत्थर के इर्द-गिर्द चहल कदमी की, फिर चुपचाप उन दोनों के पास बैठ गया।

थोड़ी देर दो छकड़े और आए। उन पर कंबल और मिट्टी के बर्तन लगे हुए थे। उनके मालिकों को बाजार पहुंचने की जल्दी थी। जब उन्हें पता चला कि रास्ता बंद है तो वह बड़े परेशान हुए। उनमें से एक बड़ा क्रोधी था। वह पत्थर को सजा देने के लिए उस पर चाबुक बरसाने लगा। समय बीतता रहा। दोपहर हो गई। अब वहां एक पूरा काफिला जमा हो चुका था। वह एक के बाद एक अपनी शक्ति परखते रहे, पर उनमें से कोई भी पत्थर को ना हिला सका।

इतने में गेरुआ वस्त्र पहने एक सन्यासी उधर से गुजरे। आसपास की पहाड़ी गांव के लोग उन्हें पहचानते थे। सभी ने श्रद्धा सहित उन्हें प्रणाम किया। यह कोई और नहीं विश्वबंध स्वामी विवेकानंद के गुरुभाई एवं श्री रामकृष्ण परमहंस के शिष्य स्वामी अखंडानंद थे। वह इन दिनों अपनी एकांत साधना के लिए यहां आए हुए थे। जब उन्होंने इन सबको वहां खड़े हुए परेशान देखा, तो बोले, तुम लोग अपनी बुद्धि का उपयोग क्यों नहीं करते।

महाराज हमें बुद्ध की नहीं सत्य की आवश्यकता है। उनमें से एक व्यक्ति ने कहा, हम सब पत्थर को हटाने का प्रयत्न कर चुके हैं, पर इसे हटाना तो दूर हम लोग हिला भी नहीं सके।

उसका उत्तर सुनकर अखंडानंद जी महाराज थोड़ा हंसे और बोले, अच्छा अब तुम लोग सब मिलकर मेरे साथ आओ। उनकी बात मान कर सब लोग एक साथ आज जुटे। स्वामी जी भी उनके साथ थे। थोड़ी देर में पत्थर नीचे लुढ़कता हुआ भयानक आवाज के साथ गहरे गड्ढे में गिर गया और टुकड़े-टुकड़े हो गया।

सब ने इसे स्वामी जी का चमत्कार माना। उनकी भोली भाली बातें सुनकर वह हंसने लगे। और फिर उन्होंने उन सब से कहा, यह चमत्कार तो जरूर है, पर मेरा नहीं, तुम सब की सम्मिलित शक्ति का है। समस्याएं घर परिवार की हो या गांव समाज की अथवा फिर राष्ट्र एवं विश्व की। सब लोग मिलजुल कर प्रयास करेंगे, तो सार्थक समाधान मिलने में देर नहीं लगेगी। स्वामी जी की बातें सुनकर लगा कि उनके छकड़ों के गुजरने के लिए ही नहीं जिंदगी गुजारने के लिए भी रास्ता साफ हो गया है। उन्हें अब समझ में आ गया था कि समस्याओं को सुलझाने के लिए जरूरत किसी मसीहा की नहीं, बल्कि सम्मिलित प्रयास की है, एकजुट होकर किए जाने वाले पुरुषार्थ की है।

Unity is Strength Story in Hindi – एक बूढ़ा व्यक्ति अपने चार बेटों के साथ एक गाँव में रहता था। बूढ़ा चिंतित था। उनके बेटे हमेशा एक-दूसरे से झगड़ रहे थे। लड़ाई से बचने के लिए उसने कई बार उन्हें बताने की कोशिश की थी। लेकिन उनके बेटे उनकी बात नहीं मानते थे।

एक दिन, उसने अपने चार बेटों को बुलाया। उसने उन्हें लाठी का एक छोटा बंडल दिया, और उन्हें बंडल को तोड़ने के लिए कहा। बंडल चार डंडों से बना था। “यह बच्चे का खेल है,” सबसे बड़े बेटे ने कहा। उसने बंडल लिया और उसे तोड़ने की कोशिश की। वह हैरान था कि बंडल में लाठी बरकरार थी। उसने अधिक बल प्रयोग किया। उसने बार-बार कोशिश की। उन्होंने सांस के लिए पुताई शुरू कर दी। गठरी नहीं टूटती उसने हार मान ली।

उनके पिता मुस्कुराए और उन्हें बंडल को खोलने के लिए कहा। उन्होंने प्रत्येक भाई से एक छड़ी लेने और उसे तोड़ने का प्रयास करने को कहा। प्रत्येक बेटे ने हाथ में छड़ी ली। कुछ ही समय में, छड़ें टूट गईं।

The Haiti That Still Dreams

I often receive condolence-type calls, e-mails, and texts about Haiti. Many of these messages are in response to the increasingly dire news in the press, some of which echoes what many of us in the global Haitian diaspora hear from our family and friends. More than fifteen hundred Haitians were killed during the first three months of this year, according to a recent United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights report, which described the country’s situation as “ cataclysmic .” Women and girls are routinely subjected to sexual violence. Access to food, water, education, and health care is becoming more limited, with more than four million Haitians, around a third of the population, living with food insecurity, and 1.4 million near starvation. Armed criminal groups have taken over entire neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas, carrying out mass prison breaks and attacks on the city’s airport, seaport, government buildings, police stations, schools, churches, hospitals, pharmacies, and banks, turning the capital into an “ open air prison .”

Even those who know the country’s long and complex history will ask, “Why can’t Haiti catch a break?” We then revisit some abridged version of that history. In 1804, after a twelve-year revolution against French colonial rule, Haiti won its independence, which the United States and several European powers failed to recognize for decades. The world’s first Black republic was then forced to spend sixty years paying a hundred-and-fifty-million francs (now worth close to thirty billion dollars) indemnity to France . Americans invaded and then occupied Haiti for nineteen years at the beginning of the twentieth century. The country endured twenty-nine years of murderous dictatorship under François Duvalier and his son, Jean-Claude, until 1986. In 1991, a few months after Haiti’s first democratically elected President, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, took office, he was overthrown in a coup staged by a military whose members had been trained in the U.S. Aristide was elected again, then overthrown again, in 2004, in part owing to an armed rebellion led by Guy Philippe, who was later arrested by the U.S. government for money laundering related to drug trafficking. Last November, six years into his nine-year prison sentence, Philippe was deported by the U.S. to Haiti. He immediately aligned himself with armed groups and has now put himself forward as a Presidential candidate.

In 2010, the country was devastated by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake, which killed more than two hundred thousand people. Soon after, United Nations “peacekeepers” dumped feces in Haiti’s longest river, causing a cholera epidemic that killed more than ten thousand people and infected close to a million. For the past thirteen years, Haiti has been decimated by its ruling party, Parti Haïtien Tèt Kale (P.H.T.K.), which rose to power after a highly contested election in 2011. In that election, the U.S.—then represented by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton—and the Organization of American States helped the candidate who finished in third place, Michel Martelly, claim the top spot. Bankrolled by kidnapping, drug trafficking, business élites, and politicians, armed groups have multiplied under P.H.T.K, committing massacres that have been labelled crimes against humanity. In 2021, a marginally elected President, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated in his bedroom , a crime for which many of those closest to him, including his wife, have been named as either accomplices or suspects.

The unasked question remains, as W. E. B. Du Bois wrote in “ The Souls of Black Folk ,” “How does it feel to be a problem?”

I deeply honor Haiti’s spirit of resistance and long history of struggle, but I must admit that sometimes the answer to that question is that it hurts. Sometimes it hurts a lot, even when one is aware of the causes, including the fact that the weapons that have allowed gangs to take over the capital continue to flow freely from Miami and the Dominican Republic, despite a U.N. embargo. Internally, the poorest Haitians have been constantly thwarted by an unequal and stratified society, which labels rural people moun andeyò (outside people), and which is suffused with greedy and corrupt politicians and oligarchs who scorn the masses from whose tribulations they extract their wealth.

Recently, at a loved one’s funeral, in Michigan, the spectre of other Haitian deaths was once again on the minds of my extended family members. Everywhere we gather, Haiti is with us, as WhatsApp messages continuously stream in from those who chose to stay in Haiti and can’t leave because the main airport is closed, and others who have no other home. In Michigan, during chats between wake, funeral, and repast, elders brought up those who can’t get basic health care, much less a proper burial or any of the rituals that are among our most sacred obligations. “Not even a white sheet over those bodies on the street,” my mother-in-law, who is eighty-nine, said, after receiving yet another image of incinerated corpses in Port-au-Prince. At least after the 2010 earthquake, sheets were respectfully placed on the bodies pulled from the rubble. Back then, she said, the armed young men seemed to have some reverence for life and some fear of death.

Lately, some of our family gatherings are incantations of grief. But they can also turn into storytelling sessions of a different kind. They are opportunities for our elders to share something about Haiti beyond what our young ones, like everyone else, see on the news. The headlines bleed into their lives, too, as do the recycled tropes that paint us as ungovernable, failures, thugs, and even cannibals. As with the prayers that we recite over the dead, words still have power, the elders whisper. We must not keep repeating the worst, they say, and in their voices I hear an extra layer of distress. They fear that they may never see Haiti again. They fear that those in the next generation, some of whom have never been to Haiti, will let Haiti slip away, as though the country they see in the media—the trash-strewn streets and the barricades made from the shells of burnt cars, the young men brandishing weapons of war and the regular citizens using machetes to defend themselves—were part of some horror film that they can easily turn off. The elders remind us that we have been removed, at least physically, from all of this by only a single generation, if not less.

We are still human beings, the elders insist—“ Se moun nou ye .” We are still wozo , like that irrepressible reed that grows all over Haiti. For a brief moment, I think someone might break into the Haitian national anthem or sing a few bars of the folk song “ Ayiti Cheri .” (“Beloved Haiti, I had to leave you to understand.”) Instead, they hum the music that the wozo has inspired : “ Nou se wozo / Menm si nou pliye, nou pap kase. ” Even if we bend, we will not break.

Except we are breaking. “It pains me to see people living in constant fear,” the Port-au-Prince-based novelist and poet Évelyne Trouillot recently wrote to me in an e-mail. “I dream of a country where children are not afraid to dream.” Internationally, U.S. deportations continue , Navy ships are ready to be deployed to intercept migrant boats, and Haitian asylum seekers could once again end up imprisoned on Guantánamo, as they did in the early nineteen-nineties. In conversations, whether with strangers or with younger family members, someone inevitably asks, “Is there any hope?”

I have hope, I say, because I grew up with elders, both in Haiti and here in the U.S., who often told us, “ Depi gen souf gen espwa ”—as long as there’s breath, there’s hope. I have hope, too, because the majority of Haitians are under twenty-five years old, as are many members of our family. Besides, how can we give in to despair with eleven million people’s lives in the balance? Better yet, how can we reignite that communal grit and resolve that inspired us to defeat the world’s greatest armies and then pin to our flag the motto “ L’union fait la force ”? Unity is strength.

The elders also remind us that Haiti is not just Port-au-Prince. As more and more of the capital’s residents are forced to return to homesteads and ancestral villages, the moun andeyò have much to teach other Haitians. “Historically, the moun andeyò have always been the preserver of Haiti’s cultural and traditional ethos,” Vivaldi Jean-Marie, a professor of African American and African-diaspora studies at Columbia University, told me. Rural Haitians, who have lived for generations without the support of the state, have had no choice but to rely on one another in close and extended family structures called lakou . “This shared awareness—I am because we are—will prevail beyond this difficult chapter in Haitian history,” Jean-Marie said.

Finally, I have hope because in Haiti, as the American writer and art collector Selden Rodman has written, “ art is joy .” This remains true even as some of the country’s most treasured cultural institutions, including the National School of the Arts and the National Library, have been ransacked. In the summer of 2023, Carrefour Feuilles, a district in Port-au-Prince that many writers, visual artists, and musicians call home, was attacked by armed criminal groups. The onslaught led to a petition that collected close to five thousand signatures. It read in part, “How many more hundreds of our women and children must be raped, executed, burned before the public authorities do everything possible to put an end to the plague of gangs and their sponsors?”

A few days later, the homes of two of the signatories, the multimedia artist Lionel St. Eloi and the writer Gary Victor, were taken over by a gang. The last time I saw St. Eloi was in 2019, in the courtyard of Port-au-Prince’s Centre d’Art, where he had a series of metal birds on display, their bejewelled bodies and beaks pointing toward the sky. Allenby Augustin, the Centre d’Art’s executive director, recently described how some artists, afraid of having to suddenly flee their homes and leave their work behind, bring their pieces to the center or keep them in friends’ homes in different parts of the city. Others add the stray bullets that land inside their studios— bal pèdi or bal mawon —to their canvasses.

St. Eloi, the patriarch of a family of artists, had lived in Carrefour Feuilles since the seventies, working with young people there. “The youth who were neglected or who could not afford to go to school were taken in by our family,” one of St. Eloi’s sons, the musician Duckyns (Zikiki) St. Eloi, told me. “We taught them to paint, to play guitar, and to play the drums. Now they are hired to run errands for gangsters who put guns in their hands.” In spite of what has happened, he still believes that art can turn some things around. He recently sent me a picture of a work by his younger brother Anthony—an image depicting gang members wearing brightly colored balaclavas and holding pencils, a book, a paint palette, a camera, and a musical instrument. “If there are gangs, we’d be better off with art gangs,” Zikiki said. “Gangs that paint, make music, recite poetry. Art is how we bring our best face to the world. Art is how we dream.” ♦
