The Legend of Jack and Jill (2021)

Rating: ★★, aka jack and jill.

Director – Jack Peter Mundy, Screenplay – Tom Jolliffee, Additional Writing – Scott Jeffrey & Jack Peter Mundy, Producers – Scott Jeffrey & Rhys Waterfield, Photography – James Morgan, Music – Andy Fosberry, Makeup Effects – Scott Jeffrey & Danielle Ronald. Production Company – Jagged Edge Productions.

Beatrice Fletcher (Eden), Jay O’Connell (Greg), Clint Gordon (Danny), Heaven-Leigh Spence (Tamsin), Abi Casson Thompson (Lulu), Antonia Whillans (Jill), Lee Hancock (Jack), Sofia Lacey (Janey Flannen), Jo Barker (Kelly Jane Fleming), Daisy Hamilton (Young Jill), Alfie Henton (Young Jack), Sarah T. Cohen (Bernice), Danielle Ronald (Carla)

A group of five friends head into the countryside on a hike in memory of their friend Lucas who committed suicide. It is particularly difficult for Eden who was involved with Lucas. They learn that there have been a number of disappearances of people around the area. As they set up camp, they are prey to Jack and Jill, the feral children of an asylum escapee, who attack and kill all whom they see as intruders on their territory.

--> The Legend of Jack and Jill was one of the productions from Scott Jeffrey who has become a prolific producer and sometimes director of low-budget horror films in the last few years. Jack Peter Mundy has acted as a cinematographer and drone camera operator on numerous of these, stepping up to direct the likes of Amityville Scarecrow (2021), Dinosaur Hotel (2021), Easter Bunny Massacre (2021), Monsters of War (2021) and Prototype (2022)

Around this period, Scott Jeffrey and associates embarked on a plan of making horror films loosely based on fairytales, nursery rhymes or popular children’s stories. See the likes of Curse of Humpty Dumpty (2018) and sequels, Toof (2019) and sequels about the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny Massacre and Curse of Jack Frost (2022). This culminated in the breakthrough hit of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023) with an announced slate of similar titles.

The point that should be made about some of Jeffrey’s fairytale/children’s story horror films is that they frequently have little or almost nothing to do with the original work. This is clearly evident when it comes to The Legend of Jack and Jill here. The original nursery rhyme, which dates from some time in the 18th Century, possibly the 17th, concerns two children:-

Jack and Jill went up the hill To fetch a pail of water; Jack fell down and broke his crown And Jill came tumbling after.

Jill (Antonia Whillans) and Jack (Lee Hancock) in The Legend of Jack and Jill (2021)

And that is really all there is to the original. Some versions add other verses about them going home but there is not anything more to the story beyond two children climbing a hill to get some water and tumbling down. When it comes to the film, Jack and Jill have now become children fleeing up the hill with a mother who has escaped from an asylum. Rather than any tumbling down and breaking crowns, they have grown up and become feral children attacking any intruders on what they regard as their territory. They do have a pail with them but there is no mentioned intention to get any water and the pail is dropped and forgotten anyway.

The film tries to tell us that the two children were what inspired the nursery rhyme, although we are told the original incident with their mother occurred fifteen years ago and this somehow inspired a nursery rhyme over two centuries old. The other amusing thing is having their pail found by people wandering up the hillside and it looking brand new despite lying in the grass for fifteen years.

In effect what we have is Jack and Jill by way of The Hills Have Eyes (1977). Considered as what it is, a low-budget Backwoods Brutality film, The Legend of Jack and Jill is competent no more than that. There’s an okay professionalism in the editing and photography, while the cast of unknowns is passable. On the other hand, without the hook of its title, the film is no more than routine filler. -->

‘Jack and Jill: The Hills of Hell’ Review

Stars: Stephanie Lodge, Sophie Jugé, Barbara Dabson, Karell Vertet, Lee Hancock, Elspeth Foster, Richard Kovacs, Kate Sandison | Written by Sophie Storm K | Directed by Adam Cowie

Before going viral with Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey , writer, director and producer Scott Jeffrey was already tapping classic fairytales, myths and legends for his low-budget British horror companies Jagged Edge Productions and Proportion Productions – taking familiar childhood tropes and turning them on their heads, oftentimes making a bright, cheerful kids thing onto a film of sheer terror. That path has given us killer tooth fairies, evil leprechauns, a demonic cupid, a terrifying Humpty Dumpty and a Hills Have Eyes-esque duo of Jack and Jill… Perennial kid’s nursery rhyme characters turned into a couple of inbred, hillside-dwelling psychopathic killers!

Unfortunately for The Legend of Jack and Jill things fell a little flat thanks to the one-dimensional characters and the fact it wasn’t really that scary. But that’s OK, Scott Jeffrey and co. Get to try it again with a direct sequel that essentially retreads the same story as the first film but with a new cast of characters ready to be slaughtered in the British countryside!

Just like the first film, Jack and Jill: The Hills of Hell centres its story around grief. This time a mother’s grief at the loss of her daughter Eden, one of the “teens” slaughtered at the hands of the titular characters during the original movie. And again, much like the first film where Eden and her friends headed to the hills to hike a trail in the British countryside in memory of their friend, Eden;’s mum Jo (Stephanie Lodge) heads off into the hills with a group of hired hands and her best friend Nikki (Sophie Jugé) to try and find out what happened to Eden. Oh, and guess what?! That’s another big mistake. Just like the first film!

Can you tell what I’m trying to say? Jack and Jill: The Hills of Hell is without a doubt a redux of The Legend of Jack and Jill, in much the same way Evil Dead 2 was a redux of The Evil Dead, and like those films, this is both a sequel AND quasi-remake at the same time.

And those are not the only things that are rehashed in this sequel. For one, the two titular killer characters once again over-egg their roles. Not only do they grunt at each other in some bizarre, somewhat laughable way but they also roam around whistling nursery rhymes too! I get you’re trying to riff on nursery rhymes and fairy tales etc., but having Jack and Jill literally “whistle while they work” is, for me, a step too far (even if it is used for creepy effect at times). I get that nursery rhymes often have roots in grim realities – Ring of Roses is a song about the plague in the village of Eyam for example – but making the titular nursery rhyme characters hillbilly killers is more than enough; they don’t have to sing nursery rhymes too, surely?

Yet whilst there are a lot of aspects of Jack and Jill: The Hills of Hell that feel very much “been there, done that”, we do at least get a ridiculously maniacally evil performance from Richard Kovacs ( Curse of Jack Frost , Dragon Fury 2 ) as one of the men that menaced Jack and Jill’s mother in the flashback seen in part one (and repeated in this sequel), who is out for his own brand of revenge. Other than that Jack and Jill: The Hills of Hell is essentially the first movie retold with an older cast. If you enjoyed the original that might just be enough to warrant watching this sequel… Just enough.

Jack and Jill: The Hills of Hell is available on VOD and digital now.

Jack and Jill 3

Review by Brandon White Pro

Jack and jill 3 2024 ½.

Watched Jan 15 , 2024

Brandon White’s review published on Letterboxd:

Jack & Jill 3 is the third installment of the horror franchise that’s about a group of people that won a trip to an Internet live show where they go to Jack & Jill’s place who are a duo of killers that go after people who are in their territory. Just like The Bad Nun 3, I went into this not knowing a Goddamn thing about this one because I don’t give a shit about the context for a horror version of Jack & Jill anyway. So I didn’t think I was confused at all about what was going on, but sadly, I think this is slightly worse than The Bad Nun 3.

The only alright aspect I can say about the film is that I thought the spiritual music wasn’t too bad. Should be used in a better horror film and doesn’t quite fit when this is not supernatural, but whatever, I’m glad to hear something that I sort of like. But yeah, let’s get on with this by talking about the beginning. First of all, the way it was directed, written, and acted made it seem like I was watching a porno. It was also of a teacher and a student, which was completely unnecessary. Were there moments where I was laughing at how bad it was? Of course. I knew at the beginning that I was going to get some bad actors, but sadly it wasn’t as unintentionally funny as The Bad Nun 3 was that made that was at least entertaining to watch.

This one was boring. The final act had some entertainingly bad moments but doesn’t have the hilarity of how baffling it is. Nothing overly stupid was going on, it’s just stupid in an unfun way. The lore of Jack & Jill was just nonsense and doesn’t make sense for them to live for a long time without a parent where they speak perfectly well, but then they just don’t know how to talk and are incredibly strong and fit. The more I talk about it, the more time I’m going to be here, and that’s a luxury I’m not going to dive into more when talking about this one. Just a waste of my time Jack & Jill 3 is that I wish was funny to watch how bad it was just to make the experience a good time, but it can’t even do that right.

Positive Messages

Although Jack and Jill 's positive message is overshadowed by the many gross-out gags and fart jokes -- not to mention the many jokes made at others' expense (especially women who don't fit the "accepted" standard of beauty) -- there are some take-aways about the importance of family, friendship, and not taking your siblings for granted.

Positive Role Models

Jill, despite her obnoxious personality, is a loving sister and aunt, and she manages to be optimistic despite all the disappointments she faces. Jack realizes how important his twin sister is to him, even though she annoys him. On the downside, women who don't fit a certain standard of beauty are the butt of jokes, and there are some stereotypical depictions of a Mexican family.

Violence & Scariness

Slapstick and physical comedy throughout: Jack's son punches his Aunt Jill, and she falls off her chair. Jack, disguised as Jill, shoves and hits Al Pacino, and he retaliates. Jill punches a bathroom attendant, who goes flying through a bathroom door.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Pacino makes lots of suggestive overtures toward Jill, and Felipe also flirts with her. Jill's full-figure bras and control-top panties are shown on more than one occasion for laughs. Jack and his wife hug and are shown in bed together, but they're just getting ready to sleep.

"Hell," "crap," "oh my God," and insults ranging from "freak" and "annoying" to "loser" and "stupid." Jill, who's rather sheltered, makes tactless comments (she wonders if a bearded man is Al Qaeda, etc.).

Products & Purchases

Like many of Sandler's movies, there are nonstop product placements and corporate tie-ins. The sequence on the cruise feels like an extended commercial for Royal Caribbean and its ship. Everyone uses Sony computers (Sony is also distributing the film); Pepto and Dunkin Donuts aren't just prominently featured -- the companies are Jack's clients, and fake commercials the brands are shown in the movie. Other tie-ins include The Price Is Right , YouTube, Craigslist, Morton's Steakhouse, online dating sites like Match.com and eHarmony, and celebrity cameos.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Adults are shown at dinner parties with wine or champagne on the table, but it's not overt.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that, like all Adam Sandler movies aimed at families, Jack and Jill includes lots of potty humor and crude jokes at the expense of women who don't fit the Hollywood ideal of beauty. Since Sandler plays both Jack and his twin sister, Jill, the movie "allows" him to make many jokes about women's bodies and personalities -- not to mention bodily functions. There's also plenty of insult language ("freak," "stupid," "loser," etc.), some suggestive comments/humor, and an extended sequence featuring a stereotypical Mexican family that may offend some viewers. Parents concerned with commercialism should note that the comedy is chock-full of product placements, from Sony (which is also the movie's distributor) to Dunkin Donuts and many, many more. Funny movie

So so movie, bit disappointing, what's the story.

Jack ( Adam Sandler ) is a successful Hollywood advertising agent who dreads the annual Thanksgiving visit he receives from his Bronx-dwelling twin sister, Jill (also Sandler). Tactless (and loud) but sweet, Jill incessantly annoys Jack. When, during her most recent visit, Jill decides to stay past Thanksgiving through Hanukah -- and then New Year's -- Jack threatens to kick her out ... until Al Pacino (the star that Jack's client, Dunkin Donuts, wants to land for their new "Dunkaccino" campaign) shows a romantic interest in her after a brief encounter at a Lakers game. Jack is forced to decide whether he should respect Jill, who isn't interested in actor, or pretend to be her to score his business deal.

Is It Any Good?

There is precisely one reason to see JACK AND JILL: Pacino. The Academy Award winner chews up the scenery while poking fun at himself (particularly his penchant for losing his cool and channeling his iconic characters like Michael Corleone and Tony Montana), and he's hands down the movie's one hilarious gag. Once Pacino enters the picture, it's redeemed by his simultaneously self-deprecating and self-aggrandizing performance.

Without him, watching Sandler times two would be torture, not entertainment. How many fart and Mexican jokes can boys (and men!) endure before realizing that it's just not funny? How many times must Sandler play another version of a very rich man with few redeeming qualities whom the audience is supposed to root for? Gone is Sandler the underdog, the Everyman of his youth. He's been replaced with Sandler the King Midas of rude comedy geared toward boys who don't care whether his movies are more or less 90-minute commercials for the many products stuffed into them.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about why Adam Sandler's movies are so popular. Are fart jokes and gags about people's appearance that funny? What's the difference between his "family" movies and the ones for older audiences?

How does Jack and Jill portray women? What message is it sending about appearance and body image ?

Does the movie undermine or reinforce stereotypes ? When does portraying an ethnic group shift from comedy to insulting?

Do you think that all of the companies and products featured in the movie are necessary to the plot? If not, why are they included ?

Adam Sandler in Jack and Jill

Jack and Jill – review

T here is a type of film so bad that it is actually scary, like seeing those mawkish photographs of sweet little children in Victorian Britain dressed up as angels and realising after a few moments that they are corpses. Adam Sandler's new comedy Jack and Jill is such a film.

It was not given an advance screening for the press, and I watched it as a paying customer in the Vue Wood Green, in north London, in an eerie, echoing, almost empty auditorium. There was one other customer present. After it was all over, we walked out together in ashen-faced silence, past the pick'n'mix confectionery stand, past the Muppet posters, afraid to speak, afraid to catch each other's eye. Each knew what the other was thinking: "What's the switchboard number for Dignitas?"

Sandler plays Jack, a hassled family guy and advertising exec whose goofy, farting twin sister Jill has come to stay for "the holidays": that is, Thanksgiving. This, of course, is Sandler again, in profoundly unhilarious drag. Jack desperately needs Al Pacino to take part in a planned TV commercial. Al's not interested – but uh-oh! Hold your horses! Maybe he will agree, after all! Because the moment Al sets eyes on Jill, hubba, hubba, has he ever got the hots for the comedy unattractive man-lady who is Jack's sibling! Incredibly, Pacino plays himself.

The script is so leaden and formulaic that Jack and Jill do everything but go up a hill to fetch a pail of water. There's incidentally a scene where Jack and Jill go to a cinema, to demonstrate their zanily identical mannerisms. Perhaps to claim a high lineage for this movie's cross-dressing premise, the film they are watching is Some Like It Hot. This adds vicious insult to serious injury.

Adam Sandler's 2009 film Funny People was about a jaded self-hating comedian who has starred in high-concept movies like Re-Do, in which he was a big baby with an adult head, and Mer-Man, in which he played a Mer-Man with a big fishy tail. (A groupie girl he goes to bed with actually demands that he do the mer-man "cry" while they have sex.) Jack and Jill is very like those imaginary films – it could easily have been a single-joke poster shot in a deleted scene from Funny People. Only it is less funny and less interesting.

Katie Holmes plays Jack's wholesome, good-natured wife, and her performance looks as if it has been Photoshopped in from some other film or some other planet. As for Pacino, he socks it over gamely enough, and even sportingly sends up his reputation. Perhaps he figures that a film this awful can't hurt his prestige. John McEnroe puts in a cameo so fleeting and depressingly pointless that I may have dreamt it.

Well, there were only two of us in the audience for Jack and Jill, so maybe the cinemagoing public is voting with its feet. Only that thought stops me booking the next flight to Zurich.

The self-possessed horrors of Late Night with the Devil

In this low-budget horror movie, a desperate talk show host brings on a ratings-grabbing guest: a demon..

A still of actors Ingrid Torelli, David Dastmalchian, and Laura Gordon in Light Night with the Devil.

Horror films live and die by their conceits. And sometimes, the best way to make a movie scary is to place it in an environment that’s not scary at all.

Is there anything further from spooky than a brightly lit TV studio? The surprise box office darling Late Night with the Devil , which hit horror streamer Shudder this weekend (and might be more suited to home viewing), tries to make one of the most innocuous American broadcast traditions into a terror. David Dastmalchian, a character actor who you’ll recognize from the margins of half a dozen Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve movies, gets a rare star turn as Jack Delroy, the host of late-night talk show Night Owls . But in an era where Johnny Carson rules after-hours broadcast, Delroy’s second-place program is on the verge of getting canceled. The only way to save it, Delroy believes, is to air an extraordinary Halloween episode about the occult in the middle of sweeps season.

A photo of actor David Dastmalchian

Aside from a bit of superfluous expository setup, the entire film is faux found footage of the episode, complete with a live studio audience and commercial breaks. (Between ad gaps, there are some behind-the-scenes shots as well.) If you like a low-budget horror movie that constricts its location to a single house, you’ll dig that Late Night restrains itself to a convincingly rendered ‘70s talk show set. As the guests’ paranormal features escalate, so do the demons — personal and literal — until reaching an inevitable, violent end.

Sometimes, a horror movie can be satisfying enough just by pursuing a strong conceit and not embarrassing itself along the way. Still, things are played a bit safe here. Without giving much away, Late Night does feel a little by the numbers in the final act. Most people will recognize the beats — vomit, levitation, Satanic voice — from any movie about demonic possession. (Though in a knowing moment, one character says, “‘Psychic infestation’ is the term we prefer.”)

Sure, nothing here touches the brilliant novelty of last year’s Skinamarink , but the best thing going for Late Night is its dedication to the conceit. The disparity between the cheery TV format and the creeping dread sustains the tension throughout its brief 93 minutes.

Mostly, Late Night with the Devil is charming and clever, and Dastmalchian and his sideburns make the work look effortless. Like any talk show host worth their salt, it’s all about committing to the bit.

jack and jill horror movie review

Director – Jack Mulvanerty (Split, Devoid) Starring – Emily E (Mutilation, Dolls Are Meant to Be Trash) and Jack Mulvanerty Release Date – 2023 Rating – 2/5

I’ve spent a lot of my adult life watching and reviewing movies for Horror Society. I absolutely love getting a movie in for review that I’ve never seen before even if it’s one that I don’t necessarily enjoy once I finally see it. I love checking out all the different approaches to horror and how the genre resonates with the filmmakers. With that being said, I’m not naïve enough to think that I will love every horror title sent my way. Some movies are just not meant for me but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are bad movies.

I was recently sent several films from filmmaker Jack Mulvanerty. I reviewed his film Creeps back in 2013 when he was just a teenager and was looking forward to seeing how he has grown as a filmmaker. I decided to follow up Everything Decay’s with his film Scarlet Piss Princess. I want to thank Jack for sending this one over!

jack and jill horror movie review

**Spoiler Alert** The film follows a camgirl, played by Emily E, who dives into a deep depression after a camming session. She then begins to explore body mutilation and other forms of self-torture. **Spoiler Alert**

I typically stay away from extreme horror and the many sub-genres that branch off from it. I tend to like the goofier side of the genre. I want to see slashers with an ass for a mask, living placentas, gay killers who kill hetero’s, and killer turds. Most extreme horror flicks lack the stories that I need. I hate when I hit play on a movie and it’s 90 minutes of violence with no story or substance. I do like some extreme horror films because they rely on story while giving us extreme acts of violence, gore, and so on. However, being extreme just to be edgy is not enjoyable to me.

Scarlet Piss Princess is extreme in a way but it’s more of a fetish horror film that will make pop horror fans feel extremely uncomfortable. The cast consists of just one person, Emily E, who does some extreme acts to her body. The film is extremely demanding, and she is all in.

The story for this one is pretty much non-existent. The film was made to showcase the beauty of Emily E. along with the various forms of self-torture that she does to her body. While it’s not my type of film I still found myself glued to the screen which is saying something about it. Finally, the film has some blood but not the fake shit. Those with a weak constitution will want to skip on this one. Overall, Scarlet Piss Princess is not going to be for everyone. If you like watching beautiful women draw blood and other extreme acts, then this one is for you. However, if you are like me and dig films with a story then you will find this one a bit difficult to finish.

Like the horror movie Abigail? Then watch these 3 movies now

Joe Allen

April 2024 has been a pretty big month for horror or horror-adjacent movies at the box office. The First Omen  was much better than many suspected, and now we’re getting Abigail from directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. If you loved Abigail ‘s combination of comedy and horror, then you might be surprised by how many other movies hit that same sweet spot.

Ready or Not (2019)

What we do in the shadows (2014).

  • Jennifer’s Body (2019)

Abigai l , which tells the story of a group of kidnappers who inadvertently kidnap a vampire, is both a horror movie and a comedy, and its ability to strike that tonal balance has been a hallmark of Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett’s career to date. Here are three other movies that achieve a similar feat and are worth your time.

The feature that launched director Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett into a new level of director stardom, Ready or Not  feels like a thesis statement for everything that they want to do. The movie tells the story of a young woman who married recently, and discovers that her family has a bizarre ritual that involves playing hide and seek with her husband’s family until dawn.

  • The best horror movies on Hulu right now
  • The best kids movies on Disney+ right now
  • 3 underrated movies you need to watch in May 2024

The catch? The family is hunting her with all manner of deadly weapons. As absurd as the premise of  Ready or Not  may feel, the movie winds up feeling both thrilling and like a fairly sophisticated commentary on the way the wealthy insulate themselves from basically everything.

Ready or Not is streaming on Fubo .

Taika Waititi’s breakthrough comedy was so popular that it launched a hilarious sitcom of the same title, but the original movie still holds up as one of the funnier horror movies of recent years. There isn’t much in the way of actual gore here, but What We Do in the Shadows  is a more efficient vehicle for the delivery of excellent jokes than almost any other movie of this era.

Opinions vary on whether Waititi’s schtick has worn itself a little thin in more recent years, but there’s no denying that anyone who is into the gonzo sensibility of  Abigail will find something to love in  Ready or Not .

What We Do in the Shadows can be rented or purchased on Amazon Prime Video .

Jennifer’s Body (2019)

One of the more misunderstood horror comedies of recent years,  Jennifer’s Body follows a popular high school girl who gets possessed by a demon and begins to feast on the male population of her high school. Featuring perhaps the best performance of Megan Fox’s career, Jennifer’s Body  carefully weaponized Fox during an era when she was America’s definitive sex object, reminding every man who stumbled on the film just how gross they were all being.

In addition to being a much smarter movie than many understood it to be when it was first released, Jennifer’s Body  is also funnier than you might have anticipated, and that’s thanks in large part to Fox and Amanda Seyfried , who are both brilliant.

Jennifer’s Body can be streamed on YouTube .

If you're a subscriber to Disney+, then you may have noticed that its home page is swimming in content that originated on Hulu. Between the two Disney-owned streamers, Hulu is the one that actually has a worthy lineup beyond the familiar brands of Disney+. That's important for movie lovers, because Hulu also has a terrific selection of films, with new titles added throughout the month.

Since we're big believers in offering as many options as possible, our picks for the three Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend include a thriller, a romance, and a comedy. We're not against running with the occasional fantasy, sci-fi, or horror film, but for the weekend of April 19-21, the following three movies are our picks for Hulu subscribers. The Stranger (2024)

Anyone who has ever stumbled across something great on Netflix knows that the streaming service has plenty of great and unheralded shows worth checking out. If you've ever tried to blindly find those shows yourself, though, you may also be aware that there are lots of shows on Netflix that aren't really as good as they might seem.

Wading through this huge pile of content without any assistance can be difficult, to say the least, which is why we've taken the time to point out a few underrated shows that are worth investing your time in. These three shows may not be at the top of your Netflix recommendations, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth checking out. Better Call Saul (2015-2022) Official Season 6 Trailer | Better Call Saul

If it seems like there's an unexpected champion on top of the list of Netflix's most popular movies every week, that's because there often is. There's always at least one film that comes out of nowhere and blows away the competition from both the major studios and Netflix itself. This week, that movie is Anna, a 2019 action thriller from writer/director Luc Besson that bombed during its initial run in theaters. But when has that ever stopped Netflix users from embracing a flick?

One of the big reasons why Anna failed to connect with audiences the first time is that Lionsgate dropped Anna in theaters with little fanfare, so it wasn't surprising when people simply didn't show up to see it. Now that the film is enjoying a surge of popularity, it's time to go over the four reasons why you should watch Anna on Netflix. It's La Femme Nikita 2.0

Horror movie ‘Late Night With the Devil’ earns eerie amount at box office, Variety reports

(NEXSTAR) – In an eerie twist that’s sure to please the publicity team behind “Late Night With the Devil,” the new horror movie earned $666,666 at the box office on Sunday, Variety reported.

The film, which hit theaters March 22, earned a total of $2.8 million during its entire opening weekend. In doing so, it also gave IFC Films its biggest opening weekend ever, shattering the previous record of $826,775 earned during the opening of 2022’s “Watcher” despite debuting on roughly the same number of screens, according to Variety .

It’s worth nothing that Box Office Mojo, an online resource for box-office data, did not yet account for Sunday’s earnings for “Late Night With the Devil” on its site as of Monday. ( Deadline published estimates that the film earned slightly more than Variety reported — $733,000 on Sunday — though representatives for IFC Films were not immediately available to confirm the box-office tally for Nexstar.)

The found footage-style horror film stars David Dastmalchian (“The Suicide Squad,” “Oppenheimer”) as Jack Delroy, the host of a fictional 1970s talk show.

“However, ratings for the show have plummeted since the tragic death of Jack’s beloved wife,” reads a plot description at the film’s official site. “Desperate to turn his fortunes around, on October 31st, 1977, Jack plans a Halloween special like no other — unaware he is about to unleash evil into the living rooms of America.”

As of Monday morning, the movie had earned favorable “certified fresh” rating of 97% at Rotten Tomatoes. The film fared slightly worse by the standards at MetaCritic, with a score of 72 (which still indicated “generally favorable” reviews from critics).

“Late Night With the Devil” opened sixth at the box office over the weekend behind “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire ($45 million), “Dune: Part Two ($18 million), “Kung Fu Panda 4” ($17 million), “Immaculate” ($5.4 million) and “Arthur the King” ($4.4 million), per IMDb.

Still, Scott Shooman the head of the AMC Film Group — the parent company of IFC Films — told Deadline that the opening numbers for “Late Night With the Devil” were encouraging.

“’Late Night With The Devil’ continues to showcase that there is still potential for highly reviewed, intelligent auteur films in movie theaters across all genres,” Shooman said.
