It hangs there, like the crest of a colossal wave, frozen in its rolling white splendour that would soon engulf the sky. All around lays an azure blue backdrop, a drowsy sea, giving way to the roaring, thundering, white waves. Small birds flit between the clouds and tree tops giving, forever wary and alert for danger because it’s a jungle out there. The Jungle As the sun rose over the horizon it awoke the jungle slowly and efficiently. Soon I could hear the morning birds chirp with all their heart and that triggered joy and excitement in my soul. A morning breeze toured the jungle making the flowers and leaves tango with rhythm and finesse as though they were experts. The lush evergreen trees stood so firm as if the roots were clinging for their very life, in the distance there was a Crystal River and a waterfall as its source.

I could hear the rampaging rapids after the dip of the waterfall which slowly converted into a swift river forcefully turning at every bank. The river cut through the middle of the jungle and diverted into another as a tributary. Finally, the lions, the big boys of the jungle roared to announce their presence after their pleasant peaceful slumber after gnawing on a flavorsome gazelle the night before. The leopards however, refused to announce their presence not only because they are a conventionally shy species but to also stay under the radar so they could catch their morning meal more easily.

I slowly knelt down and let my hands explore the terrain beneath me although it looked rough and sandy it was cool and comforting and after a few moments my body was persuading me not to let go, as I listened to my body trying to induce me, more and more I felt the urge not to let go I wanted to kneel there the whole day and let the sand satisfy my dry hands, but I did not let it manipulate me and slowly I started to get up. As I was getting up a chameleon caught my eye even though it was skillfully disguised, I bent down again then reached out to touch it.

I could see the centre of the neck throbbing faster as I was getting closer, it was hesitating possibly thinking I was a new addition to the jungle and wanted to feed on it. It, however, did not move, as I reached its airspace I touched its skin with my bare finger tips, it felt rough and scaly. The throbbing on its neck soon slowed down as it realized I had no interest in eating it, I slowly backed out of its airspace and stood hurriedly and once again I was mesmerized by the extraordinary view.

As I observed the jungle I noticed a grape tree not too far from where I was, so I quickly dashed next to it and took a look at its beauty which put me in a day dream for about five seconds before I regained my senses. I spotted a ripe grape screaming “eat me”! I reached for the grape with all my soul, as my mouth began to water, I snatched it violently eager to please my taste buds and quickly placed it in my mouth. I let the grape roll underneath my tongue and back on top where I balanced it as my body prepared for godliness.

As my mouth began to flood with saliva signaling it can’t wait any longer, I crushed the grape with my first molars and the flavor exploded as if I had set of a bomb. I could feel, taste and analyze all the different flavors and dyes as if I was a living chromatogram, my taste buds eased with satisfaction as the appetizing juice ran down my throat followed by the violet exterior. I stood there with my eyes closed, captivated by what I had just experienced and convinced that this was truly the work of God.

The aroma of the vegetation of the whole jungle mixed all together and formed a smell that engulfed the air around me creating heavenly humid atmosphere. I took a deep breath in not wanting to exhale and wishing that it could be a replacement for oxygen, I could feel little drops on the tip of my nose that were tickling me. As I basked in this atmosphere it felt like I was in another dimension, and that I had escaped from this planet to paradise. As evening approached I laid back on the comforting sand witnessing the sunset which said “goodnight” to the whole jungle.

The more the sun went down the quieter it became and the nocturnals would be saying “good morning” to each other and they would start preparing to catch their breakfast. The birds were slowly returning to their nests, the lazy lions were already asleep, the lurking leopards had returned to their resting place and the sneaky serpents had swiveled their way home. Soon the sun had completely descended and the full moon appeared bright with is stars that were constantly winking at me. The whole jungle was pin drop silent; it had fallen asleep, as did I.

When you are assigned a descriptive essay, you’ll normally be given a specific prompt or choice of prompts. They will often ask you to describe something from your own experience.

• Describe a place you love to spend time in.
• Describe an object that has sentimental value for you.

You might also be asked to describe something outside your own experience, in which case you’ll have to use your imagination.

• Describe the experience of a soldier in the trenches of World War I.
• Describe what it might be like to live on another planet.

Sometimes you’ll be asked to describe something more abstract, like an emotion.

The key to writing an effective descriptive essay is to find ways of bringing your subject to life for the reader. You’re not limited to providing a literal description as you would be in more formal essay types.

Make use of figurative language, sensory details, and strong word choices to create a memorable description.

Use figurative language

Figurative language consists of devices like metaphor and simile that use words in non-literal ways to create a memorable effect. This is essential in a descriptive essay; it’s what gives your writing its creative edge and makes your description unique.

Take the following description of a park.

This tells us something about the place, but it’s a bit too literal and not likely to be memorable.

If we want to make the description more likely to stick in the reader’s mind, we can use some figurative language.

Here we have used a simile to compare the park to a face and the trees to facial hair. This is memorable because it’s not what the reader expects; it makes them look at the park from a different angle.

You don’t have to fill every sentence with figurative language, but using these devices in an original way at various points throughout your essay will keep the reader engaged and convey your unique perspective on your subject.

Use your senses

Another key aspect of descriptive writing is the use of sensory details. This means referring not only to what something looks like, but also to smell, sound, touch, and taste.

Obviously not all senses will apply to every subject, but it’s always a good idea to explore what’s interesting about your subject beyond just what it looks like.

Even when your subject is more abstract, you might find a way to incorporate the senses more metaphorically, as in this descriptive essay about fear.

Choose the right words

Writing descriptively involves choosing your words carefully. The use of effective adjectives is important, but so is your choice of adverbs , verbs , and even nouns.

It’s easy to end up using clichéd phrases—“cold as ice,” “free as a bird”—but try to reflect further and make more precise, original word choices. Clichés provide conventional ways of describing things, but they don’t tell the reader anything about your unique perspective on what you’re describing.

Try looking over your sentences to find places where a different word would convey your impression more precisely or vividly. Using a thesaurus can help you find alternative word choices.

• My cat runs across the garden quickly and jumps onto the fence to watch it from above.
• My cat crosses the garden nimbly and leaps onto the fence to survey it from above.

However, exercise care in your choices; don’t just look for the most impressive-looking synonym you can find for every word. Overuse of a thesaurus can result in ridiculous sentences like this one:

• My feline perambulates the allotment proficiently and capers atop the palisade to regard it from aloft.

On Sunday afternoons I like to spend my time in the garden behind my house. The garden is narrow but long, a corridor of green extending from the back of the house, and I sit on a lawn chair at the far end to read and relax. I am in my small peaceful paradise: the shade of the tree, the feel of the grass on my feet, the gentle activity of the fish in the pond beside me.

My cat crosses the garden nimbly and leaps onto the fence to survey it from above. From his perch he can watch over his little kingdom and keep an eye on the neighbours. He does this until the barking of next door’s dog scares him from his post and he bolts for the cat flap to govern from the safety of the kitchen.

With that, I am left alone with the fish, whose whole world is the pond by my feet. The fish explore the pond every day as if for the first time, prodding and inspecting every stone. I sometimes feel the same about sitting here in the garden; I know the place better than anyone, but whenever I return I still feel compelled to pay attention to all its details and novelties—a new bird perched in the tree, the growth of the grass, and the movement of the insects it shelters…

Sitting out in the garden, I feel serene. I feel at home. And yet I always feel there is more to discover. The bounds of my garden may be small, but there is a whole world contained within it, and it is one I will never get tired of inhabiting.

Excellent piece of writing, I especially liked how descriptive you had made the little bits and phrases for other aspiring writers to use. I’m much more of a fantasy writer but I needed this in order to do something, so it came in really helpful! I can hardly wait to get on with my assignment!

Create ‘senses’ sentences as a class for the jungle. You might have two different paragraphs in your story on senses. a senses paragraph on your setting in the jungle and later a senses paragraph about the exciting part /problem in your jungle story. • I could taste the stagnant humid air as the night grew younger.
• I could taste the soft fleshy fruit of the avocado from beneath the lush foliage of its tree.
• As I was climbing up the spiky rocks I could taste the droplets of water from the crashing waterfall splash into my mouth.
• I could taste the horrible caterpillar as it burst its vile flavour in my mouth
• I could taste the flavours of the wild pigs meat as I hungrily tore chunks from its charred flesh
• I climbed up a banana tree and tore the smooth green skin from its soft fruity flesh
• I could taste the dirt rising from the dusty jungle track.
• I could taste the coarse dust flow into my mouth as we zoomed in the jungle jeep along the dirt track
• I tasted the raindrops on the edge of my tongue
• I tasted the minute rain droplets fall like jewels and gather on the tip of my tongue
• I could taste gruesome fleas hit my mouth

What I can smell in the jungle…

• As I climbed the banana tree I could smell their delicious sweet aroma
• As I drove into the jungle I could smell the lovely scent of lush leaves and foliage
• I could smell the lovely scent of exotic flowers as they filled the humid air
• I could smell the mouth-watering banana as the monkey was eating it.
• As I jumped over the rocks, I could smell the mouth-watering mangos dangling from the exotic trees. 
• As I scaled over the luxuriant trees I could smell the disgusting stench of the tapirs droppings
•  I could smell the odour of foul dropping of wild animals
• I could smell the rotting flesh of the wild pig.
• Wafts of the rotten foliage filled the air above the swampy quagmire below
• II was sweating so much in the humid jungle that I could smell my body odour.
• As I was racing away from the fierce jaguar I could smell the sweat that was trickling down my spine.

• As I woke up under the umbrella of trees I could feel insects crawling over my face.

• As I struggled through the jungle I could feel the quagmire soggy mud filling up my shoes
• I felt petrified as I crept past the aggressive pack of tapirs 
• As I splashed the fresh water from the waterfall on the rocky slope onto my face I sighed and looked up at the rays of gleaming sunlight shining through the canopy of trees.
• I felt alarmed as I saw the wild animals fighting
• I could feel the heat from the ray of sunshine flowing though the leaves of the dense trees
• As I felt the coarse baby panther’s fur he growled softly at me.
• I felt parched and faint after falling from the bendy rubber tree and from being in the jungle humid heat for so long.
• As I lay in the foliage I could feel the baboons playing with my hair.
• I felt petrified as the large anaconda begin to wrap itself around my neck.
• I could feel the battering rain hit my head as I sprinted to the cover of the canopies in the monsoon forest.
• I could feel the tropical parrots’ wings brush against me as I wandered curiously through the jungle
• As I foraged for food on the forest floor I could feel the softness of the shrubs.
• I could feel the banana skins the cheeky orangatangs were throwing at me as I struggled through the dense forest floor.
• As I woke up from my frightening night in the jungle I could feel the heavy weight of an animal on top of my legs and I was immobilised with fear.
• I could feel the fur of the adorable baby chimpanzee as he snuggled against me.
• I could feel the drops of water as I waded past the waterfall which shimmered in the blazing sun.

I looked down from my private jet window at the sun melting into the grassy hills. Samsara, my dog, was in her cage at the back of the jet.

Suddenly, I heard a bang! With a roar, we descended rapidly and crashed.

We had crashed in the Amazon jungle. I crawled my way through the debris of the jet to rescue my dog.

I was still quivering from the crash. I stumbled through the lush foliage. I could see the sensational sky fill with the pinks and purples of the setting sun. It was a lovely place but I was frightened.

I trudged under the canopies of foliage. I could hear the howler monkeys screech and scream. The humid air hit my face as I nervously sat under numerous canopies to sink my teeth into a luscious papaya…

I had the same feeling of mystery and danger around us. In the gloom of the trees there seemed a constant menace and as we looked up into their shadowy foliage vague terrors crept into one’s heart. It is true that these The Lost World 189 of 353 monstrous creatures which we had seen were lumbering, inoffensive brutes which were unlikely to hurt anyone, but in this world of wonders what other survivals might there not be—what fierce, active horrors ready to pounce upon us from their lair among the rocks or brushwood

Descriptive Essay On A Jungle

Have you ever wished you could soar through the trees in a jungle? Well that’s impossible, but I have developed the next best thing. Jungle Jumble is my new roller coaster everyone will be lining up to ride. This new indoor roller coaster is the wildest ride you will ever experience. Everyone will be so excited to ride it, so get your tickets soon. As you can tell by the name, Jungle Jumble is a jungle themed amusement park ride. Riders begin by stepping into a colorful, circle, parrot themed car that will twist and turn. The cars are so colorful it will be like you are riding in a rainbow. There are so many more jungle themed features throughout this entire ride. The ride begins in a tunnel with monkeys that greet the riders as soon as they enter. After a few hills and turns, the riders will be engulfed in many thick vegetation and beautiful tropical flowers that surround them to show the jungle canopy. Throughout the entire coaster, there are various elements that incorporate the jungle. In addition to the canopy of trees, there are a variety of toucans, macaws, or parrots that fly around just like in a real jungle. Afterwards, the riders drop descending along with a beautiful waterfall. After a mid-ride loop, riders will zoom down a twisting, spiraling, track amidst hanging vines and perhaps an occasional constrictor. It's a Jungle

Upton Sinclair’s novel, The Jungle, gives a heart breaking portrayal of the hardships faced by the countless poverty stricken foreign laborers in the slaughter houses of Chicago. In the early 1900's, strikes, riots, labor unions, and new political parties arose across the country. The government, with its laissez-faire attitude, allowed business to consolidate into trusts, and with lack of competition, into powerful monopolies. These multi-million dollar monopolies were able to exploit every opportunity to make greater fortunes regardless of human consequences. Sinclair illustrates the harsh conditions in Packingtown through a Lithuanian immigrant family and their struggles to survive. Jurgis Rudkus and his extended family come to the United States to find work and to make a better life for themselves. When everyone finds employment right away, the family begins their lives in the unfamiliar United States with optimism, enthusiasm, and naivety. Their inexperienced attitude is evident when they purchase a small rickety house. Slowly, they awaken to the harsh realities of their surroundings. There's the mortgage to pay, interest on the mortgage, food, clothing, shoes, and coal that needs to be bought, but there isn’t enough money to pay for it all. Therefore, this leads the rest of the family to trudge out into the cold and merciless streets of Chicago to beg for work and money. However, Jurgis and his family still lacked the sufficient income necessary to make ends meet. Through the duration of the novel, tragedy after tragedy strikes this family, leading the family into ruin. After a long series of unfortunate events, the reader finds Jurgis fresh out of prison, his wife dead, and his family scattered. Jurgis eventually overcomes his misfortunes and finds salvation in a newly formed political party, called Socialism.…
