UBA Foundation launches 2023 National Essay competition

UBA Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has announced the commencement of the 2023 edition of its annual National Essay Competition (NEC) in Nigeria, with a call for entries.

Now in its 13th year, the annual National Essay Competition is part of UBA Foundation’s education initiative aimed at promoting literacy and encouraging healthy and intellectual competition amongst senior secondary school students in Nigeria and across the African continent.

The 2023 edition promises increased participation from senior secondary school students across Nigeria as they can conveniently submit their entries from the comfort of their homes or schools through the UBA Foundation NEC digital submission portal at https://www.ubagroup.com/national-essay-competition/

The essay topic for this year is “Will Artificial Intelligence (AI) take over Human Intelligence? what should students do to ensure AI doesn’t override but enhance their ability to learn through research?”. Students are expected to properly research, write, scan and upload their handwritten essays to the digital portal on or before October 20, 2023.

The first prize winner will receive an educational grant of N5 million to study at any African university of their choice, whilst the second and third prizes now stand at N3 million and N2.5 million educational grants for any African University.

Also, winners of the 12 best essays, will go home with brand new Laptops and other educational tools to help them with their studies and other tertiary research work.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, UBA Foundation, Mrs. Bola Atta, said that with the digital submission portal, more students in senior secondary schools across the country now have the opportunity to scan and send in their entries and compete to win any of the educational grants for study at any university of their choice on the African continent.

She said, “We have worked hard to ensure that every Nigerian high school student who wishes to, will be able to enter for the NEC 2023 and stand a chance to win a fully funded University education through the UBA Foundation.

“For several years, we have upgraded our processes to ensure that our UBA Foundation programmes continue to impact lives in meaningful ways. We realise that the use of technologically driven initiatives is part of modern day and we would like to reach students in their comfort zones, which is why we encourage students to submit their essays digitally.”

She pointed out that the submissions will be evaluated by judges who are professors from reputable Nigerian Universities. The professors will select the top 12 finalists who will take home consolation prizes including personal computers.

These 12 finalists will also write another supervised essay where the top three winners will be announced at the grand finale to be held in November at UBA’s head office in Lagos, Nigeria.

The National Essay Competition has been rolled out in other African countries where UBA operates, in order to open-up the opportunity for more African children to benefit from the educational grants. UBA Foundation embodies the UBA Group’s CSR objectives and seeks to impact positively on societies through several laudable projects and initiatives.

The Foundation through its Education pillar has donated hundreds of thousands of books to students across Africa under the ‘Read Africa’ initiative aimed at encouraging and promoting the reading culture in African youths. Its National Essay Competition has also afforded the opportunity to hundreds of students to improve their lives through higher education.

The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has commenced the 2023 edition of its National Essay Competition and they are calling for entries from secondary school students in Nigeria and across Africa.

The UBA National Essay Competition , targeted at senior secondary students in Nigeria, is organised annually, as part of the UBA Foundation’s education initiative which aims to promote the reading culture and encourage healthy and intellectual competition among secondary school students in Nigeria and across Africa.

This year’s topic for the UBA Essay Competition is “ Will Artificial Intelligence (AI) take over Human Intelligence? What should students do to ensure AI doesn’t override but enhance their ability to learn through research? ”

Selection Criteria And Eligibility

  • Must be a secondary school student
  • Must submit a scanned copy of your handwritten essay (750 words MAX)
  • Must submit a passport photograph
  • Must submit a copy of a birth certificate, National ID or Passport
  • Selection Procedure:

Entries received for the competition will be reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges made up of professors from reputable Nigerian Universities, who will then shortlist 12 essays for further assessment

Following this, a second round of competition will involve the 12 finalists who will write a second supervised essay from which the three best essays will be selected as the three best overall winners of the competition.

The first prize for the UBA National Essay Competition is a N5 million educational grant to any African University of their choice, while the second and third prizes are N3 million and N2.5 million in educational grants to African Universities, respectively.

How to Apply

Applicants must upload a scanned copy of their original birth certificates or international passport data page. They must also upload a handwritten essay (not more than 750 words) on the portal.

UBA Foundation Announce Winners of National Essay Competition

A 15-year-old student from Fountain Heights Secondary School in Lagos, Onaro Adaeze, has emerged as the winner of the 2023 United Bank for Africa (UBA) Foundation, National Essay Competition (NEC).

Onaro won a grand prize of N5 million in scholarship from over 12,000 entries, which was narrowed down to 12 finalists who were awarded various prize categories at the finale in Lagos recently.  

Also, AbdulHameed Khadija of Sweet Haven High School, Kano, secured the first runner-up position, claiming a scholarship valued at N3 million. Chukwuma-Okoh Naomi of Queens College, Yaba, Lagos, was recognised as the second runner-up, earning a scholarship worth N2.5 million.

Speaking at the prize presentation, the Chief Executive Officer of UBA Foundation, Bola Atta, revealed that participants were tasked with exploring the realm of artificial intelligence and its potential augmentation of their learning abilities through research-driven approaches.

Atta said: “The caliber of entries received this year was outstanding. The winners, in particular, displayed exceptional qualities, exhibiting outstanding talent and skill. There has been a consistent year-on-year enhancement in the submissions for the national essay competition.”

Expressing the competition’s objective, United Bank for Africa, Group Managing Director, Oliver Alawuba highlighted its aim to hone the critical thinking prowess of African youth and groom them for leadership roles across the continent.

He said, “The UBA National Essay Competition centers on nurturing African youth. It seeks to bolster their critical thinking and reading capabilities, preparing them for leadership roles within the continent. It encourages them to research and articulate topics relevant to the African landscape.”

Uba sierra leone concludes 3 rd edition of the uba foundation national essay competition (nec).

On Saturday 7 th  January 2023, UBA Sierra Leone through the UBA Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) hosted the 3 rd Edition of the NEC Finals. The NEC final was held at the UBA Head Office training room with live Facebook coverage through the Bank official Facebook page.

The 2022 NEC 12 finalists were asked to write on the topic ‘The Role Played by Various Stakeholders in Improving Financial Inclusion in Sierra Leone’ in front of the judges in forty-five (45) minutes. This was part of the essay process to select the best three winners among the 12 finalists. Assessing their respective works, were five distinguished judges drawn from top public tertiary institutions in the country. These judges are Doctors and Professors in English, Literature and Mass Communication. The scripts were graded using the following as guide: organization, expression, content and mechanical accuracies. 

The National Essay Competition (NEC) is a UBA Foundation Initiative that was initiated in 2011 as part of the Foundation’s drive to improve access to education for the under-privileged across Africa. The MD/CEO of UBA Sierra Leone said that the UBA Foundation National Essay Competition offers an opportunity for pupils in examination classes to strengthen their critical thinking, civics, and other skillsets relevant for their growth. 

The MD/CEO announced the winners and presented the gifts, certificates, dummy cheques and trophies to them. The top 12 candidates each received a laptop, school bag, branded UBA items, Certificate of participation and the top three winners received trophies that will be a legacy for them to cherish.

Introducing the UBA Foundation

National essay competition 2022, application deadline: august 31st 2022..

UBA Uganda through the  UBA Foundation launched the National Essay Competition, targeted at senior secondary students.  UBA Uganda through the UBA foundation launched the National Essay Competition (NEC). The National Essay competition is an education program introduced by the bank to equip students with good communication skills to position them for success in the professional world. The National Essay competition provides a competitive platform to develop the intellectual and writing abilities of senior secondary school students in Uganda.

Essay Topic:

How did the covid -19 pandemic affect you and what were your biggest lessons from it, eligibility criteria.

  • Must be a secondary school student.
  • Essays must be handwritten (750 words max).
  • Must submit a copy of the National ID/ School ID/ passport.
  • Submit complete contact information.

Selection procedure:

  • Entries received for the competition will be reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges made up of professors from reputable Ugandan Universities, who will then shortlist 10 essays for further assessment.
  • Following this, a second round of competition will involve the 10 finalists who will write a second supervised essay from which three best essays will be selected as the overall winners from the 10 finalists emerged from the first round of the competition
