Although ChatGPT is more than capable of coming up with content that is ready to be copied and pasted into a resume, you should tweak the text so that it is personalized to your actual experiences and to make sure it doesn't look like it was written by a robot.

First, copy and paste the entire job description for the role you’re applying for directly into ChatGPT. This will give it the inside scoop on exactly what the employer seeks. Ask ChatGPT to scan through the wording and pull out the key skills, requirements, and responsibilities that it notices.

Let’s assume I was to apply for the role of digital marketing manager that I found on LinkedIn. I tried to have ChatGPT analyze the job description by prompting it: “Based on the job description below, please identify and highlight the key skills and requirements the employer seeks in bold.” ChatGPT did just as I requested—determining the most essential qualifications and competencies sought by the employer.

Next, I gave ChatGPT a hypothetical professional background for the next exercise. I laid out a few years of experience as a digital marketing manager at previous companies, key projects I led, big wins for clients, and all the usual résumé checklist items—just to set the table with a sample candidate profile. Armed with that, I told ChatGPT: "Based on my work history as a digital marketing manager below, do I meet the requirements for this position?" Putting it to the test to see how I'd stack up.

After crunching my background side-by-side with the job description details, it looks like I didn’t completely knock it out of the park. ChatGPT responded along the lines that my experience sounded pretty relevant but asked me to fill in a few gaps to get the full picture before it could make the call. It wanted more info on things like confirming if I directly managed a marketing team before, providing my current geographical location, and elaborating on my experience with remote collaboration tools and team communication.

No problem! I quickly padded it with some made-up details about the senior team I supposedly managed and the collaboration tech I'm skilled in. For good measure, I threw in Austin as my location. ChatGPT came back, acknowledging I seem qualified enough now with that extra context.

Create a Resume from Scratch with ChatGPT

Here's the fun part. I let ChatGPT take a first pass at writing my resume. I prompted it to: “craft a resume that fits the job I’m applying for based on the information I provided before.” And it definitely took a first crack at it. ChatGPT put together a chronological resume, organizing my hypothetical background into nicely formatted sections: professional summary, work experience, education, skills, and additional information.

Obviously, to protect my personal information, I didn't provide ChatGPT with any real specifics like my name, address, contact details, etc. The last thing you'd want is your data to get stored on some server to train algorithms without your permission! So, for privacy's sake, it’s best to feed it career details only. Once you like the outcome, you can edit and polish ChatGPT's draft, adding specifics like your personal details and tweaking anything that needs finesse (outside of ChatGPT, though). Use your human judgment to perfect the end result.

You Can Use ChatGPT to Strengthen Your Existing Resume

If you already have a resume you want to improve, you can use ChatGPT to help you polish and optimize it. Copy and paste your resume and the job description into ChatGPT. This will give it the information that it needs to work with. Then, tell ChatGPT to scan your resume and the job description and identify the key skills and requirements the employer seeks. You can prompt it with something like: “ChatGPT, here’s my resume: [Insert Resume] and here’s the job description [Insert Description]. Now, identify the most important qualifications, skills, and requirements the employer is seeking. Then give me some tips to tweak my resume to really highlight and optimize it for those key things they want.”

ChatGPT will dig into all that info and give you back some great pointers on little tweaks you can make, key stuff you should emphasize, or areas where you should elaborate on your experience. It can help you reshape things so your resume looks like the perfect, personalized fit for what they’ve asked for in a job listing.

Applying for jobs at big corporations can feel like tossing a message in a bottle into the sea these days. • Education information, including years of study, degree(s), certifications, and any honors or awards
• Skills relevant to the job postings’ requisites and responsibilities
• A copy or key highlights of the job posting, including the description of the role, ideal candidate, and company culture

2. Begin the prompt 

With your information handy, build out the prompt. Start by providing the chatbot with the information shared in the post for the open position. 

I need help drafting my resume. Please emphasize my most relevant education, experiences, and skills to align with the job requirements and responsibilities in the job description. Here’s a copy/summary of the posting: [Insert job posting] .

3. Insert your personal details

Next, include the personal and professional information you assembled in step one. It’s key to organize these details in a way that’s easy for the chatbot to read and understand. Double-check everything: ChatGPT wasn’t designed as a resume builder. It pulls from the information you provide and the content it’s trained on, which means it isn’t all-knowing. Ensure all industry-relevant skills, experiences, and know-how are represented accurately so no incorrect claims slip through the cracks.

Proofread the writing: ChatGPT can make grammar errors, produce awkward phrasing, or miss critical stylistic details for different types of resumes . These simple errors can cost you a job interview . They show a lack of professionalism and attention to detail, which potential employers may associate with your performance. Always proofread for mistakes and adapt the language to sound natural.

Over 99% of Fortune 500 companies use the Application Tracking System (ATS) regularly in their hiring process. The system is in place to scan resumes for keywords and details fitting the job description and then shortlist the most deserving candidates for the next hiring round. 

Luckily, ChatGPT can easily modify resumes for different industries, positions, and experience levels. Based on the JD, the AI adds relevant keywords to the response, ensuring that your resume can easily ethically bypass application tracking systems, of course.

However, it’s a good practice to review ChatGPT-generated content for blunders. AI is fast but not perfect. 

With the recent ChatGPT update, there are two ways to use ChatGPT to build a resume:

• Converse normally with ChatGPT and build a resume step-by-step.
• Use GPT to build a resume (only available for ChatGPT Plus or Team subscribers).

Let’s start with the first method.

Method 1. Have Normal Conversation with ChatGPT to Build a Resume

For this method, we are taking an example of a candidate looking for a s oftware engineering role in a fintech startup .

Step 1. Define Your Career Objective

Defining career objectives isn’t just about telling ChatGPT what job you’re looking for; it’s more than that. 

You must provide AI with information like the specific industry you’re job hunting in, the type of company you want to work at (startup, scaleup, mid or large companies), and job role nuances.

When ChatGPT has all this information, it can give you a precise, relevant output.

Here’s how to approach this step:

• Be specific about the role you’re looking for. Instead of telling ChatGPT, ‘I want a job in tech,’ specify the exact designation, ‘I am looking for a role as a software engineer.’
• Mention the industry you want a job in. A software engineer in the e-commerce industry will require a different skill set than a software engineer in a fintech company.
• Mention the type of company you want to work at (startups, scaleups, enterprises) and mention any other special requirements you might be looking for.

Goal: I am looking for a mid-level software engineering position focusing on back-end development at a fintech startup. Help me construct a resume that highlights my relevant skills and experiences for this specific role.

Context: I have experience with Python and Ruby on Rails and have worked in agile development teams. 

What ChatGPT has given me, for now, is a template with my skills explained.

Let’s move on to the next step.

Step 2. Detail Your Professional Background

After defining your career objectives, educating ChatGPT about your background must be your next step.

What does this involve?

A deep dive into your skills, experience, and educational background. This will give ChatGPT a clear understanding of the relevance between the job you’re looking for and your past experience.

Here’s how to do it:

• Start by listing the skills that are most relevant to the job you’re looking for. For a software engineering role, highlight your technical abilities (programming languages, tech stack, etc) and soft skills.
• Share specifics about your professional journey so far, the projects you’ve worked on, companies you’ve worked with, challenges you faced, and more.
• Tell ChatGPT about your educational background and highlight all the achievements you have so far.

Following my goal to secure a mid-level back-end software engineering position at a fintech startup, I need advice on presenting my professional background. 

Context: I have 5 years of experience with Python and Ruby on Rails and a Bachelor’s in Computer Science. I have played a pivotal role in a cross-functional team developing a payment processing application that increases company revenue by 20%. 

Goal: How should I structure these details in my resume to highlight my suitability for the role I’m targeting?

ChatGPT has now refined the resume and made it more personalized.

Step 3. Organize Resume Structure and Content

The structure and content of your resume are crucial for making a strong first impression. It must be intuitive and highlight your strengths in a way that aligns with your job target. 

For a role in a specific sector, like a fintech startup, understanding how to present your information can significantly impact the reader’s perception.

Here are the things you must do when finalizing your resume structure and content:

• Choose between chronological, functional, or a combination resume format based on what best showcases your experiences in relation to the fintech software engineering role you’re targeting.
• Your summary statement is the first thing a recruiter will see and read. Ensure you hook the recruiter right from the start. In this case, your summary statement must resonate with the fintech sector’s needs, emphasizing your relevant skills and experiences.
• Determine what order of sections (skills, work experience, education, projects, etc.) looks best.
• Reflect on the job description and the conversation about your background. Use this to infuse your resume with keywords and phrases that are relevant to the job and industry, ensuring it passes through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and catches the recruiter’s eye.

Based on my goal to land a mid-level back-end software engineering role in a fintech startup, and considering my 5 years of experience with Python and Ruby on Rails, plus my involvement in a significant project that boosted company revenue – how should I structure my resume? 

Specifically, how can I craft a compelling summary that highlights my expertise in fintech, and in what order should I arrange the sections to showcase my relevant skills and experiences best?

Step 4. Final Touches and Reviews

The process of refining the resume is complete. You can now export this resume and fill in all the personal information.

We’d suggest you read your resume word by word and edit it wherever you feel a human touch is required.

Submitting an AI-generated resume without reviewing it won’t get you through round one.

Method 2. Leverage GPT

👀 Note: This method is only for people subscribed to ChatGPT Plus or Teams plans.

ChatGPT has launched a store that has several GPTs in it . 

What are GPTs?

GPTs are smaller and more personalized versions of ChatGPT that ChatGPT users have trained to do very specific tasks like building resumes, learning how to cook, how to write short-form posts, and more.

You can either train a GPT on your own or use GPTs from the store that OpenAI has integrated with ChatGPT Plus and the Team interface.

To get started, you can just search for the term ‘resume’ in the top search bar and click on the GPT you want to use.

Once you click on the GPT you want to use, you see an interface similar to ChatGPT, but it will give you short pre-built prompts to get the ball rolling.

You can also write a custom prompt in the Message box, but for this example, let’s use a preexisting prompt.

I clicked on ‘Build Your Dream Resume Now.’

The GPT requested us to upload the current resume for it to analyze, so we did that.

ChatGPT analyzed the resume and then moved on to give tips for making the resume better.

It then followed up with a question: Would you like to try improving a specific section based on these suggestions, or would you prefer more detailed advice on a particular part of your resume?

The good thing about using GPT for resume-building is that it asks you questions that are needed to build a personalized, stunning resume.

Here are some tips for using ChatGPT effectively in helping you write resumes. 👇

Tip #1. Write a Great Summary

Being specific will generate better responses for you. Make sure your prompts are specific to the job role and carry impressive details about you. Highlight your skills, achievements, and other notable mentions to add weight to your resume. 

Here’s a prompt by Rob Wilson , author at Wall Street Journal, that helped him generate an impressive resume:

“Write a resume for me. I am the co-author of the first best-selling book on conversational AI, Age of Invisible Machines. I’m also the CEO and co-founder of OneReach.ai and the owner of UX Magazine. Previously, I founded EffectiveUI, one of the world’s first user-centered design agencies, which was acquired by Ogilvy/WPP. Before working in design and technology, I was a sound editor for Warner Bros.”

Tip #2. Use Role Play to Your Advantage

Ask ChatGPT to act as a recruiter or resume reviewer. This way, you train the AI to synthesize information the right way. As a result, you get detailed-oriented feedback as if coming from the experts themselves.

I want you to act as a resume expert. I’m uploading my resume with the job description, and I want your feedback on improving my resume for this particular job. Include feedback on the following points:

• What sections should I add/remove from my resume?
• How do I make my resume easy to read and scan?
• What kind of action verbs should I choose?
• Any grammatical mistakes or bad sentence fragments you can identify?

Tip #3. Use AI as an Enhancer, Not a Writer

ChatGPT can help update and modify the content in your resume so that it aligns with the job description. It can further enhance the content for better readability, consciousness, and impactfulness. 

But remember, writing complete resumes with ChatGPT and submitting them to the recruiter is against the ethics and also low-quality work. AI just can’t match human-resume writing quality as it lacks emotions and the touch of personalization and styling humans bring to the table.

Tip #4. Always Double-Check GPT Generated Content and Suggestions

No matter how optimized your prompts are, it’s important to review and edit AI-generated responses. It’s normal for ChatGPT to hallucinate and make up things on its own, leading to incorrect information.

To prevent this from happening, leverage AI only for generating the first draft. And then edit them with personal expertise. If things go as planned, the end results can make the recruiters happy.

#1. Limited Word Input Capacity

ChatGPT has an upper limit of 2048 characters , around 300-450 words per input. Anything after that gets truncated. The problem arises for industries like social media, legal, and ed-tech, where the length of a job description can be 750 words .

This creates a significant challenge if you’re looking to personalize resumes based on the job description. Of course, you can identify and input the key details in your prompt, but that’s another task in your bucket. 

#2. Lacks Human Touch

When compared to AI, humans are any day better at sounding like humans. Even though ChatGPT is good at following the best practices for resume writing, it’s still crucial to cross-check the information AI gives for accuracy. 

Meanwhile, make sure you edit the AI content to sound as if a human wrote it. Since there’s a boom in AI-generated resumes, companies have started using AI detectors as an add-on to their Application Tracking Systems (ATS).

#3. ChatGPT Has Its Own Biases

ChatGPT is not an independent thinker. In fact, not even a thinker. 

ChatGPT responses revolve around the data it is trained upon. Sometimes, the response may unintentionally reinforce gender stereotypes. 

This raises concerns about potential bias or subjective content when using AI for resume writing.

That’s why it’s essential to review and modify generated content for fair and unbiased language. 

#4. Frequent Hallucinations

ChatGPT is trained on limited data. However, it’s stretched to unexpected use cases. Eventually, the AI hallucinates to generate a response to your query.

For instance, when ChatGPT is used for writing resumes, you’d find AI assuming things that are far from reality. This also increases the risk of sharing flawed information with recruiters. 

Hence, it’s recommended that you fact-check ChatGPT’s content before you submit your resume to the recruiters.

Using AI to write and edit resumes is an effective practice everyone should leverage. It fastens your resume writing process and gives you feedback on your existing resume. What’s more,  use it to draft a resume template based on the job description.

But where AI can be a boon, using it blindly can backfire badly. Remember to always review any information AI gives you and edit the resume for personalization.

• The AI works with the information it’s given. The quality of the output depends entirely on the quality of the input.
• If you’re not specific enough when entering your prompts, you will get vague, generalized output. Similarly, if your prompt is poorly formatted, the AI may not understand what you’re asking for.
• ChatGPT may embellish some of your accomplishments. While it may be tempting to leave these in place, it’s never a good idea to lie about what you have and have not done.

This AI is not a replacement for doing the actual work yourself, but it can be a useful tool during the process of looking for a new job. Only you can truly know what you’ve achieved through your work and life experiences, and you’re the one who is best suited to crafting any type of resume or cover letter.

Entering resume and cover letter prompts into ChatGPT

The goal of using ChatGPT to write your resume or cover letter is to lessen the stress of creating these documents. But that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. You still must give the AI very clear instructions about what you want it to generate.

Prompts for using AI to write a resume

You can use AI to review an existing resume and provide feedback or tailor your resume to a specific posting. Make sure you ask very clear questions about what you’re looking for, as well as providing very clear guidance to the AI about what its role is. In both scenarios you’ll need to include your resume in its entirety, but if you’re looking for tailored edits, you should also include the job posting.

Prompts for these scenarios might look like:

• I am going to provide my resume and want you to act as a reviewer and provide feedback on it. How can I make it more readable? Are there any action verbs I should use? Am I using too many buzzwords?
• I will provide you with a job description for a position I am applying for. Understand the key points and requirements for this role and summarize them. Then review my resume and provide feedback on how to tailor it for this job.

These might seem overly specific but if you’re not specific enough, you won’t get the response you’re looking for.

Prompts for using AI to write a cover letter

When using ChatGPT to work on your cover letter for a specific job, you’ll need to provide:

• Your resume
• The job description of the role you’re interested in
• Information about what kind of tone you’d prefer

You can also ask the AI to review your cover letter for readability and help you get through a bout of writer’s block.

Prompts for these sorts of asks might look like:

• Write a cover letter for a [position] role at [Company] in a professional tone. Use my resume and the job description as a reference.
• I want you to review my cover letter for readability and relevance to a job post. I will share the job post as a reference. Tailor my cover letter for the job referenced in the post and adjust wording to make it more relevant.

These prompts may feel awkward to write, almost as though you’re explaining something to a small child. But the clearer and more specific you are, the more pleased you’re likely to be with the results.

While AI like ChatGPT is making some waves on the tech scene, it doesn’t totally replace human writing and editing skills, especially when it comes to resumes and cover letters. It certainly has value but comes with a few caveats. Use ChatGPT with caution, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for grammatical errors .

• The answer depends on what roles you’re looking for, and how ChatGPT can aid you. For instance, if you’re a good writer or are applying to roles that require you to be good at writing — like a reporter or a content director — it’s best to avoid using generative AI. Outside roles that are specific to content writing, ChatGPT can be a useful ally as you craft your resume.
• The idea is not to rely on AI to create a final draft of your new resume or cover letter. Rather, use it as a tool to put together a strong first draft of your strengths and ideas.
• If you do decide to use ChatGPT, understand that it’s not perfect. It’s likely to make mistakes as well as have biases of its own about your job, field, or industry.
• Finally, know that AI is deeply dependent on humans. It takes significant human interaction to refine and polish the raw materials ChatGPT provides.

Experts told GOBankingRates that there are certain prompts that can help craft your resume into something that will catch recruiters’ eyes. Here are the top prompts for ChatGPT to help you write your resume. 

Ask ChatGPT To Create a Custom Resume for a Specific Job

The more specific a resume is, the better. Recruiters are looking to see that you have the exact skills that fulfill the job they’re hiring for.

Career expert Michael Gardon says there’s a simple method to create a specified resume using ChatGPT. “Here is the best prompt: ask ChatGPT to ‘please personalize my resume for [this job] at [this company]. Here is the job description [paste it]. Here is my resume [paste resume],'” Gardon advised.

Get Keywords Based on the Job Description

The truth is most recruiters — or systems they use — are looking for keywords to separate your resume from those that aren’t qualified. ChatGPT can help you find those keywords.

“You can share a job posting and ask [ChatGPT] to provide you with a list of keywords or skills from the job description,” said Laci Baker, a career advisor at University of Phoenix . “You can then share your resume with [ChatGPT] and ask if all those keywords and skills are present on your resume, which can help with ensuring you are tailoring your resume to the job description.”

Ask ChatGPT To Follow a Resume Template

Found a resume template you like online? Phil Siegel, the founder of AI nonprofit CAPTRS , says you can submit that to ChatGPT and ask for a similar resume based on your experience.

“Start from a template you like (they are all over the web) and give ChatGPT some detailed information about you. Ask it to create a resume using the format and your data. The advantage is it will give a more detailed resume and it can be done fairly quickly,” Siegel said.

Use Your Experience To Create a Professional Summary

Writing the professional summary at the top of your resume can be challenging. It’s hard to know how to speak about your personal experience in a way that hiring managers will gravitate toward.

Baker suggests typing elements of your past job experience into ChatGPT and asking it to write a professional summary. “You can share your past experiences and a target role you are hoping to apply to, and [ChatGPT] can give you a career summary that you can then edit and make your own,” Baker said.

Use ChatGPT as a Career Expert

Siegel says there is a way you can “chat” with ChatGPT that can help it create a resume for you. “‘Pretend’ ChatGPT is a friendly expert and hold a conversation with it about creating your resume. Tell it you’re creating a resume for a job role and ask it to ask you about the most important information to build a strong resume.”

Siegel notes this will take more time than other prompts but will help create a stronger and more focused resume that’s tailored to your strengths.

Change the Tone of Your Resume

Sometimes you know what you want to say, but you’re not sure how to say it in a professional tone. ChatGPT can help tailor your wording to fit what a recruiter is looking for. “[ChatGPT] can rewrite resume elements to be more focused and more formal if those are elements you need assistance with,” Baker said.

You can even prompt ChatGPT to make your resume sound more impressive with this prompt from Juliet Dreamhunter, the founder of Juliety : “Here is the experience section of my resume. Rewrite it in bullet points and use powerful action verbs to highlight my expertise and achievements. Make it sound more impressive and professional.”

Reduce the Length of Your Resume

Generally speaking, you want your resume to be 1-2 pages. If your resume is longer, ChatGPT can help reduce it. “You can ask [ChatGPT] to take the content you already have and rewrite it to reduce the length to 2 pages,” Baker said.

You’ve probably heard the buzz about ChatGPT and all the wild conversations and creations it’s producing. While it’s a fun diversion in the middle of an otherwise dull day, are there any practical applications for ChatGPT — like having it write your cover letter and resume?

We wanted to know what AI-generated cover letters and resumes would look like. While they were well-written, what ChatGPT generates for you is likely not enough to help you land a job interview.

What Is This ChatGPT Everyone Is Talking About?

The chatbot making a splash (and headlines) is ChatGPT , and it’s poised to be a massive step forward in artificial intelligence (AI).

It uses natural language processing , making it easier to ask questions and receive relatively life-like responses. For example, you can ask ChatGPT, “Why do you think the sky is blue?” and it will attempt to reasonably answer your question as a friend might. This is different from other chatbots or search engines, where you might have to phrase the question “just so” to get an answer.

In addition to asking ChatGPT questions, you can also ask it to perform writing tasks for you. And what ChatGPT has produced is, well, stunning.

Some examples:

• A letter disputing a health insurance denial
• A movie script
• Original poetry
• Writing programming scripts

What’s more, you can ask ChatGPT to redo and potentially improve the answer by asking it to “try again” using the same inputs. 

Our ChatGPT Experiment: Resumes and Cover Letters

Because ChatGPT is incredibly sophisticated, we wondered if it could be leveraged to save time during a job search. What would it produce if we asked it to write a few resumes and cover letters for us?

AI-Generated Resume Examples

We started with some resumes.

The deckhand on a pirate ship:

An entry-level software programmer:

Entry-level financial analyst:

What’s interesting about these AI-generated resumes is that they are relatively unique to the prompt. For example, only one entry-level resume includes a GPA .

However, these resumes also include things that are no longer necessary . For example, they have a street address, and the lead deckhand resume includes a references section.

AI-Generated Cover Letter Examples

We gave ChatGPT multiple cover letter prompts to test its abilities. These are some of the best examples:

An entry-level investment banking job:

An accounting internship:

When you have no work experience: 

Lead deckhand on a pirate ship:

It’s fair to say that these are well-written cover letters. They follow general cover letter conventions, are polite, and explain why the writer is applying to the role. It also mentions a few skills that might be necessary for success in the role, despite us not mentioning any skills as part of the prompt.

What ChatGPT Got Wrong

While the resumes and cover letters ChatGPT generated aren’t half bad, they are exactly the kind of resumes and cover letters you would not want to submit as your application.

Let’s look at the lead deckhand cover letter, specifically the two middle paragraphs.

The second paragraph talks about the writer’s “several years of experience including time spent as a deckhand in leadership roles.” The third paragraph also mentions, “I have demonstrated strong leadership skills.”

While the writer should mention their leadership skills, especially because moving to lead deckhand is probably a step up the career ladder, there is no mention of how the writer used their leadership skills.

It’s the same on the pirate deckhand’s resume. It lists specific skills, like sword fighting, raiding, and treasure hunting, but nowhere does it say how the deckhand used those skills or why it matters to the captain or the rest of the crew.

This is precisely what recruiters say job seekers should avoid. Saying you possess leadership skills is fine, but unless you explain how you used them, the phrase is meaningless. You have to include an example of your leadership skills as a quantifiable result that made a positive impact on the team.

For example, in the second paragraph of the cover letter, you could say:

I have several years of experience working on ships, including time spent as a deckhand and in leadership roles. For example, I was once asked to lead a raid on a village that was rumored to have an extensive gold reserve. I selected a team of eight deckhands, created the raiding plan, and successfully led my crew in under the cover of darkness. Not only were none of my crewmates killed, captured, or seriously injured, we also recovered nearly 10,000 gold pieces.

The rewrite is a clear and compelling example of how you use your leadership skills and, more importantly, what the positive impact was for the entire crew.

What ChatGPT Got Really Wrong

Of course, part of the problem with the deckhand cover letter prompt is that it wasn’t specific. We simply asked it to write a cover letter. That’s a pretty generic ask, which is probably why we got a generic response.

For the next test, we asked ChatGPT to write a cover letter for a job opening at Forage and included some text from the posting that describes some of the experience our team is looking for. Here’s the prompt:

And here’s what ChatGPT generated:

Once again, the cover letter is decent overall. However, it parroted back what we pasted in the input section without any explanation or context.

For example, the second paragraph talks about the writer’s ability to conduct pre-call planning (a keyword from the job description). While ChatGPT attempts to explain why pre-call planning is important, the explanation isn’t specific. It won’t help this job applicant stand out from the others because it doesn’t include any particulars about how this writer conducts pre-call planning.

It’s a similar problem with the third and fourth paragraphs. The cover letter mentions specific skills from the posting but doesn’t explain how the writer uses them or include an example of when they used their skills to “grow my sales pipeline.”

Instead, you want to explain how you conduct pre-call planning or how you used your skills to grow your sales pipeline:

One of my key strengths is my ability to conduct pre-call planning. In addition to researching my prospects and gaining a deep understanding of the challenges they face, I research their competition, too. This helps me better personalize my pitch and position my company as a supportive solution to beating the competition.

The fifth paragraph also parrots keywords to the point it’s practically plagiarizing the job posting: “I have a consistent track record of achieving measurable inside sales goals in a sales environment where accurate entry and management of lead data in a CRM system is required.” Worse, the cover letter includes no examples of the measurable inside sales goals the writer achieved.

We found other problems with the resumes and cover letters Chat GPT generated.

First, ChatGPT doesn’t seem to self-edit what it produces. For example, under the Awards section of the software engineer’s resume, one award was formated with a dash, the other with a comma. While that may be the appropriate way to format these awards, it demonstrates that the program can be inconsistent.

Second, it appears that ChatGPT was making things up to fill in gaps from the broad prompts we provided. The cover letter for the accounting internship says that the writer is proficient in QuickBooks, even though we did not include that information in the prompt. It’s possible that because the prompt was vague, ChatGPT pulled that information in as an example of what to include in your cover letter, but again, it is something to be aware of.

Should You Use ChatGPT for Your Cover Letter and Resume? 

To be fair, this is a beta version, and ChatGPT says some results may be inaccurate. As we experimented, we found that the more specific the prompt, the more specific the output. When we asked ChatGPT to write a cover letter that included “the fact that I increased my high-confidence pipeline by 20% YOY,” it produced a slightly better cover letter:

That said, while it’s fun to ask ChatGPT to create a cover letter and resume so you can pursue the pirate life, should you use AI for your cover letter and resume?

As the results show, what ChatGPT produces is often generic and broad, which is unlikely to get you an interview. And copying and pasting parts of the job description isn’t helpful because ChatGPT parrots back the keywords without explaining why or how you do those things.

That said, if you’re having trouble getting started, are struggling with writer’s block, or can’t seem to find the right words, ChatGPT can be helpful in getting you a draft to work with. It generates clear outlines that give you an excellent starting point for creating application materials. But you can’t rely on it to generate the perfect application. If you use ChatGPT to generate a cover letter or resume for you, make sure you personalize it with specific details about how you use your skills on the job and proofread it carefully to ensure everything is accurate before hitting submit.

Job seekers are using ChatGPT to write resumes — and nabbing jobs

Increasingly, AI-generative technology is being used to create resumes — and according to a new survey, it often helps its users land a new job.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology is increasingly being used to create resumes and cover letters, and according to a new survey by Resume Builder , using a chatbot improves your chances of getting the job.

The online job site said nearly half of 2,153 job seekers surveyed earlier this month used ChatGPT to help write their resumes, their cover letter, or both, and the majority said it helped them land the job they wanted.

Nearly three quarters (72%) of those who used ChatGPT did so to write their cover letter, and just over half (51%) used it to write their resume.

The chatbot appeared better at grabbing the attention of prospective employers, as seven in 10 (69%) who used ChatGPT reported a higher response rate from companies.

Additionally, 78% of respondents said they got an interview when using job application materials written by ChatGPT, and 59% were hired after applying for a job using materials written by the chatbot technology from San Francisco-based OpenAI.

“Job seekers who use ChatGPT for their cover letters and/or resumes are really no different than those going to a resume writing service or using readily available templates and online tools,” Stacie Haller, Resume Builder’s chief career advisor, said in a statement. “Hiring managers know this when reviewing these documents and can likely tell if they were written by ChatGPT.”

Of course, correlation doesn’t equal causation, and it could be that users of ChatGPT for resume creation are simply more committed to their job hunt. But increasingly, external platforms powered by AI-generation models are being used to construct resumes, according to Hiten Sheth, director in the HR practice of research firm Gartner.

“Candidates — just like employers — are experiencing a fiercely competitive labor market,” Sheth said in an email reply to Computerworld . “To help gain competitive advantage, candidates might feel the need to utilize generative AI in order to bolster their resume, for example. It’s basically impossible for a recruiter to know if a resume was compiled using this technology — and recruiters are also not looking for it.”

The primary motivation for those who used ChatGPT is to save time, the survey found. Those benefits outweigh the risks for most job seekers, according to Resume Builder’s report.

An overwhelming majority (88%) of the total sample said they are somewhat or highly likely to continue using ChatGPT to write job application materials in the future. Four in 10 said interviewers weren’t able to tell when job candidates had used ChatGPT.

However, when interviewers found out about the AI use, the response wasn’t always positive. Of the 40% of respondents who said an interviewer was aware they used ChatGPT to write application materials, 35% said they didn’t get the job because of it.

“The purpose of a resume is to get someone an interview,” Haller said. “From there, it’s up to the hiring managers to use other tools to evaluate a prospective employee during the process.”

Three out of four of those surveyed said the materials written by ChatGPT were of high  or very high quality. And 28% said they had to do only “a little bit” or “no” editing to the resumes and cover letters written by ChatGPT.

Foundation models, the technology underpinning OpenAI’s ChatGPT, have been around for years and are already used in natural language processing (NLP) chatbots. However, according to the latest Gartner 2023 Recruiting Innovations Bullseye, the use of chatbots is still in the experimental stage and is not considered a strategic recruiting goal for most organizations over the next few years.

Despite the apparent success of ChatGPT in hiring, there are broad concerns that the technology could be used to generate false information at scale, according to Sheth. AI-generated “hyperrealism,” coupled with how easy it is to use, accelerates the risk of false information spreading rapidly.

As a result, both users and organizations “must remain cautious when using generative AI, as failing to do so could result in legal and reputational consequences,” Sheth said via email.

“ChatGPT continues to generate buzz because it allows everyday individuals to directly interact with AI that is seemingly intelligent, understands questions, and helps accomplish specific tasks. However, the content this technology generates can sometimes be incorrect, as it depends on the prompt, task, or domain and the quality and quantity of training data leading to risks and misuse,” Sheth said.

A Resume Builder spokesperson said the organization can’t conclude that ChatGPT increases a respondent’s chance of being interviewed or hired, “but contrary to what some might believe, using ChatGPT may not hurt an applicant’s chances, either.

“I think there is a narrative out there right now that using ChatGPT is somehow cheating [or] misrepresenting yourself. But using it can definitely save time for job seekers and, according to the survey findings, most respondents didn’t experience a downside (only 11% said they believed they were denied a job because they used ChatGPT),” the spokesperson said in an email reply to Computerworld .
