What is a cover letter?

A cover letter, also known as a covering letter or application letter, is a one-page document that introduces a job seeker’s work history, professional skills, and personal interest in applying for a job.

Although it might seem old-fashioned in 2021, cover letters are still necessary .

The purpose of your cover letter is to expand upon the achievements in your resume, showcase your personality, and explain why you’d be a good fit for the company. Overall, your cover letter (paired with your resume) helps managers and recruiters screen your job application.

What to include in your cover letter

When writing your cover letter, use the following basic structure:

  • Introduction: Carefully written to grab the hiring manager’s attention, and explain why you want the job.
  • Body paragraphs:  At least two paragraphs detailing your relevant education, skills, work experience, and why you’re a good fit for the position.
  • Conclusion:  A concise ending that reiterates your strengths, and asks the hiring manager to contact you (known as a call to action).

When it comes to writing a perfect cover letter, job seekers tend to have many questions.

What should I put in my cover letter? How exactly should I say it? How much detail should I include?

Step 1: Put your contact details (and the employer’s) in the header

Contact Details

At the top of your cover letter, type your:

  • First and last name
  • Email address (make sure it’s professional, and not [email protected])
  • Phone number
  • Mailing address (optional)
  • Linkedin profile link (optional)

Under your contact details, you should then type:

  • Today’s date
  • The first and last name of the person you’re writing to, or the relevant department
  • The company’s address
  • The company’s phone number
  • The hiring manager or company’s email address

Step 2: Address the hiring manager by their name

Opening Salutation

Make a great first impression by addressing your cover letter directly to the reader. Robotic and impersonal greetings like “ To Whom It May Concern ” or “Dear Sir or Madam” come off as lazy and insincere.

Not sure who to address? Try checking the company website, searching Linkedin, or even calling or emailing human resources to ask. If you’re still having problems addressing your cover letter, follow these tips:

  • If you’re not certain about the recruiter’s title (like Mr., Mrs., Ms., Dr., etc.,) you can drop it from your cover letter salutation . For instance, “Dear Jane Smith” is acceptable.
  • If you can’t figure out who the recruiter is, you can guess. For example, if you’re applying for a marketing position, you can address the marketing director by name instead.
  • If you can’t find anyone’s name, you can address it to the department. For instance, “Dear Marketing Department” is okay.

Step 3: Hook the hiring manager with a strong introduction

  • Job position: The name of the position you’re applying for

You shouldn’t be afraid to let some of your unique personality quirks shine through in your cover letter. But be sure to strike the right tone, and don’t be weird.

Step 4: Prove that you’re the perfect candidate for the job

Body Paragraphs

Next, it’s time to make a convincing argument that you’re the right person for the job. To write your body paragraphs well and sell yourself as the perfect candidate, remember three main points :

  • Be bold, but don’t brag: A strong cover letter conveys confidence. If you’re able to provide evidence for a claim (like how you’re the best candidate for the job), include that evidence in your cover letter.
  • Be honest, and don’t embellish: Don’t lie or even stretch the truth about your experience, because getting caught could devastate your career. Don’t worry, you’ll get a job with the experience you already have.
  • Don’t include irrelevant information: Your cover letter should directly target the job and company you’re applying for. Your cover letter (and resume) should respond to the job posting, referencing the skills and qualifications required for the role.

Hiring managers will look closely at your cover letter for evidence that you’re a qualified candidate worth considering for the position. Use your recent work history and achievements to prove (with numbers) that you have the skills to get the job done.

Here are some examples of proof you can include in your cover letter to highlight your value:

  • Professional achievements : Did you exceed targets for production, sales, revenue, profit, customer satisfaction, or any other business objectives?
  • Professional praise : Have you received compliments from management or colleagues for your work?
  • Professional awards : Have you received awards for your work, like Employee of the Month?

Writing tips (if you don’t have much work experience)

For job seekers with little or no experience, writing a cover letter can seem difficult. Fortunately, employers understand that many applicants (especially for entry-level positions) don’t have much experience, and instead assess the cover letters they see based on other qualities, such as:

  • Academic (and other) achievements : Do you have a degree (bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD?) Is your GPA above 3.5, and did you receive awards like cum laude , magna cum laude , summa cum laude ? Did you land a scholarship? Did you complete a thesis?
  • Extracurricular activities : Have you done any part-time work, or been involved in volunteering, student government, clubs, athletics, theater, or other activities? Do you pursue hobbies and interests?
  • Self-motivation and goal setting : What are the short and long-term goals you have, and how does the job you’re applying for fit in with them?

Remember that any of the information you include should be relevant to the job you’re applying for . For instance, your theater club experience will have no relevance for an accounting job, unless you were the treasurer.

Step 5: Close your cover letter with a request to interview

A professional cover letter format is 200-350 words, single spaced, and uses a single A4 page. The font should match any of these recommended fo nts for your cover letter , and the font size should be no smaller than size 12. Your cover letter margins should be 1”–1½” on each side to make sure it’s readable and professional.

The content should be formatted as shown in the thumbnail on the left, regardless of how long your cover letter is .

Did I write in a personable, and not overly-formal tone?

A classic cover letter writing mistake is to think that long sentences with overly-formal wording make you sound “professional.” In reality, such language makes your cover letter feel stiff and hard to read.

To instantly improve your cover letter’s tone, try:

  • Using contractions, like “don’t” instead of “do not”
  • Avoiding clichéd words and phrases, like “dynamic,” “thinking outside the box,” and “synergy”
  • Choosing simpler forms of words, like “helpful” instead of “advantageous”

Here’s a comparison between a personable writing style and an overly-formal one:

Did I remove unprofessional and unneeded information?

The following information makes your cover letter unprofessional, and may even invite discrimination from your potential employer. Delete any of the following:

  • Personal information, such as family, religion, sex, or gender
  • Salary information, such as former salary, or future salary expectations
  • Questions and inquiries, such as ones about company benefits or job expectations. If you need to know, ask in an email outside of your application, or during the interview process.
  • Information copy-pasted from your resume, such as bullet point sentences or skills lists. Instead, reference information from your resume in your cover letter naturally, and expand on it.
  • Photos, like a professional headshot. If you’re a US-based job seeker, headshots are not necessary for the vast majority of jobs.

Did I proofread my cover letter?

You’re probably tired of taking the time to carefully write each sentence of your cover letter by this point. But you have to proofread it anyway.

Don’t only use spell check and scan the page for typos, because you’re likely to miss mistakes, especially flow-related ones. Here are two quick tricks professional editors use to catch sneaky mistakes and make good edits:

  • Read your cover letter out loud: Doing this will force you to consider every word, sentence, paragraph, and piece of punctuation. Plus you’ll catch hard-to-read sentences, and can then adjust them as necessary.
  • Change the font : A new font forces your brain to grapple with something that seems new. Switching your cover letter to a different font can help you notice mistakes you’d otherwise skim over and miss.

This is a document that is sent along with a resume. It is a very important document that is among the basic determinants of whether one is to be shortlisted or if one’s resume is to be overlooked. This explains why considerable time should be devoted to ensure that an efficient document is developed right from the start. A cover letter should follow the basic format of business letters and address why you are writing, what you have to offer and how one will follow up.

What should be included in the cover letter?

The following sections should be included in a cover letter:

  • An appropriate salutation is an integral part of a good cover letter. It is usually placed at the beginning of the cover letter or message. It is important to include names of contact persons in case you have them. For example: Dear Mr. Kisembo.
  • The most important part of a cover letter is the body. This is a section which includes the paragraphs where you explain why you are interested in and qualified for the job for which you are applying. You should write about why you think you are the most suitable and qualified candidate for the job you are applying for.
  • Contact information for a potential employer to contact you. You can include basic contact information like a telephone number and an email address.
  • It’s also important to close you letter formally. For example: Sincerely yours.
  • Add your signature.

How long should a cover letter be?

Three to four paragraphs of one to three sentences each should form your cover letter. You should be able to introduce yourself in the first paragraph, stating how you found the employer and what position you hope to fill.

In the second paragraph use a few facts or figures that will make the reader want to call you for a job interview. This might be a time to correlate prior job responsibilities and accomplishments to requirements in the new position, or to reveal extraordinary skills or accomplishments such as language proficiency.

In the third paragraph, mention why you are the best suitable candidate.

The fourth paragraph serves as an elegant exit. This super short paragraph should include a “thank you” for time spent, permission to call you that makes it clear you look forward to the conversation, and your phone number. Try to convey all this in a gracious manner!

Writing a letter to the embassy is an important process. If you are planning to go to Uganda as a tourist or as a business person then you will need to submit your letter to the consulate. I also recommend that you allow me a week’s extension, to enable me to complete some of the registration formalities. I understand that extending my stay in Uganda will involve payment of new fees. I will quickly provide you with all the papers you want. Kindly send me this Application Letter so that I can proceed with the registration formalities.

What is a visa?

A visa enables a person to travel to the nation today, seek medical care, etc. Usually, a visitor is issued a visa by the embassy for an entire month, although this may vary from country to country. There are also three different types of visas. A tourist visa permits the holder to travel for up to 90 days within 180 days. A business visa allows the holder to work or conduct business.

A tourist visa allows the holder to travel for up to 3 months within 6 months I need to have an invitation letter to prove my intentions? If you qualify for a visa, you must apply for a visa. You also need to provide adequate proof to prove that you are in Uganda for legitimate reasons.

Requirements for a visa

If you have sufficient income, you will not need a visa. But if your salary is less than $2000, this is not the case. You will need a visa if your income is $2500, $3000, or more. You must have a job offer for work that pays a minimum of $500 per month. If you do not have a job offer, you will need to make an offer to the government and request the required budget for Uganda. The budget will be based on the National minimum wage and unemployment rate. The required budget will be paid to you at the Uganda Embassy. 

If you do not have the budget, you will have to pay for the visa. You will need to provide a letter from your bank stating the money you plan to spend and your proof of income.

Who is eligible for the Uganda Visa?

  • Applicants who are leaving for Uganda are eligible for the visa as long as the purpose of their visit is solely to study.
  • An applicant, who is going to do their primary field of study in Uganda
  • Medical doctors or health-related volunteers for not less than one year
  • A journalist or working journalist, if their field of work will be journalism or reporting on a newsworthy event

This is not a comprehensive list but only the most common type of visa requirements in Uganda.  

To obtain a visa, you must be married or have a partner who has a valid passport, visa, and the couple needs to apply together.

How to apply for a visa

You have been invited to visit Uganda in Uganda for a short visit to get a visa for Uganda to stay permanently. Therefore, this visit is not a tourist visit. You will be required to bring a letter to prove you are going for business or employment. When to apply You must apply before March 2018. First, you need to fill out the form, to be sure that you provide all the necessary information for the visa process. You should bring a passport, to make sure that the data on your passport is correct. You may have an expired passport and need to renew it.

The visa form is different for those who want to apply for an adult visa and those who want to apply for a second time for a visit visa. When filling out the application form, choose the form according to the status of your visa application: Residence Visa: This form is meant for those who are interested in living in Uganda for more than 90 days. This is also the form for those who want to apply for the first time for a visa.

Here are the steps in writing an invitation letter for a visa to Uganda .

  • Write a business letter for the visa (this is the most common way). Use some strong words to describe your activities in Uganda. Make sure you mention the initiatives you are working with your company. Also include details about your organization.
  • Start with the date of your travel. Write it in a column. It should be important so that the embassy doesn't ask for another time to receive the invitation letter.
  • Explain why you want to visit Uganda. Give details about your activities. Also, explain what you want to do in the country.

Applying For A Grant of Letters of Administration

When a person dies without leaving a valid will , there is a process for beneficiaries to follow which includes the following;.

1) Please get a death certificate following the passing of the intestate person (a person who passes away without leaving a legal will )

2) Hold a family meeting to appoint an administrator.

3) After that, proceed to the Administrator General ‘s Office and open a file for the estate of the deceased.

4) There is a form in the file that you can use to notify the Administrator General of the death of the deceased.

5) The report contains full particulars as to the property of the deceased as far as ascertainable, names of the deceased’s children with their corresponding age, surviving relatives, persons who wish to apply for Letters of Administration , whether the deceased left a Will or whether they believe the will exists among others.

6) It’s on this form that the intending administrators apply for a Certificate of No Objection (CONO) from the Administrator General .

7) Upon the return of the file containing report of death to the Administrator General ’s Office, it is allocated to a State Attorney who causes a meeting of the family members either to be held at Administrator General ’s Office (Georgian house) or at the Chief Administrative Officer’s office of the district where the deceased was resident.

8) In that meeting, questions (including but not limited to the following) will be asked;

  • Whether the deceased left a will .
  • Whether the deceased left a widow or a widower.
  • Whether the deceased had any the dependents.
  • Whether the deceased was survived by any Children and the ages of the children .
  • Whether the deceased gave out some of the property before his or her death
  • Persons who the family has chosen to be granted a Certificate of No Objection .

9) The beneficiaries have to sign a consent to that effect.

10) After the family meeting by the Administrator General , if he is satisfied with the information provided, he will then grant a Certificate of No Objection to the persons selected to be Administrators. The purpose of the CONO is to show that the Administrator General does not object to the grant of Letters of Administration to the Applicants.

11) After this the person given the Certificate of no objection will petition Court for a grant of Letters of Administration . The petition should be in English.

The Court in which to file is determined by the estimate of the pecuniary value of the estate.

  • If the value of the estate is 50 million or more, apply to High Court .
  • If the value of the estate is between 20 million and 50 million, apply to the Chief Magistrate Court .
  • If the value of the estate is 20 million or less, apply to the Magistrate Grade 1 Court .

12) In the Petition:

  • State the time and place of the deceased’s death.
  • Attach a death certificate
  • State the Children and other relatives of the deceased and their respective residences.
  • State the right on which the Petitioner founds his claim.(The relationship of the Petitioner with the deceased)
  • Name the property left by the deceased and also state that the property is within the jurisdiction of the Court where the application is filed.
  • State the estimated value of the estate.
  • State that the Petition is consented to by all the beneficiaries and is not objected by the Administrator General .
  • Attach minutes of the family meeting and the Certificate of No Objection .
  • Indicate that the Petitioners are above 18 years, fit and proper persons to apply for the same and that are desirous of administering the estate.
  • The petition needs to be signed by the petitioners and verified by either a Magistrate, Judge or Commissioner of Oaths.
  • The Petition should also be accompanied by a declaration by the petitioner.
  • In the declaration, the petitioners swears to administer the estate lawfully, exhibit a true and perfect inventory (report) as per the law.

The application (Petition) is filed together with a Notice of Application for grant of Letters of Administration . 13) The Petitioner has to pay court filing fees for the application.

14) When the application has been duly filed and the Notice of application signed by either a Magistrate, Chief Magistrate, Registrar or Deputy Registrar, the Applicants are required to advertise the notice in the Uganda gazette and a Local Newspaper for a minimum of 14 days.

15) Any person who wants to object to the grant of Letters of Administration must notify the Court advertising the application for letters of Administration within 14 days from the time the application is made.

16) Any person (with a good cause) objecting to the application can lodge a caveat to that effect.

17) The Applicant has to a file a copy of the newspaper that has the advert with Court.

18) When filing the applicant must file; a copy of the Newspaper, the applicant must also file an of identification form duly verified by the Area Chairperson L.C.I, an introduction letter from L.C.I and also a copy of the Administration Bond.

19) The Applicant is then given a date on when to appear for identification.

20) Where a caveat is lodged, Court shall not grant Letters of Administration until it has heard the person objecting, and determine whether or not the person has a good cause for objection.

21) If there is no reasonable cause, Court will proceed to grant Letters of Administration .

22) Where no caveat has been lodged, the Applicant will be identified by either a Magistrate, Chief Magistrate, Registrar or Deputy Registrar depending on the Court filed after 14 days of the advert.

23) Court if satisfied will make the applicant sign an Administration bond and then proceed to grant Letters of Administration .

While work-integrated learning (WIL) continues to gain prominence worldwide, the range of definitions indicates no consensus on what it actually includes. This contributes to a creative space in which to uncover its more nuanced forms and potential. Despite the range of available definitions there appears to be an emphasis on WIL at the level of post-schooling, at the expense of considering its relationship with school curriculum policy. This mirrors the emphasis that many countries seem to place on exit level education outcomes or achievement and can be criticised along the same lines. In response to the paucity of knowledge around WIL at school level, we consider a Legitimation Code Theory perspective on ‘work-integrated learning’ in school science curriculum policy. We provide a general overview of Karl Maton’s Legitimation Code Theory, paying particular focus on the notion of semantic gravity. With the South African school physical sciences as the case in this qualitative curriculum study, the paper uncovers aspects of school science education curriculum which align it to the precepts of work-integrated learning. The paper reveals the utility of Legitimation Code Theory for uncovering epistemic shifts in school science curriculum that contribute to bridging science theory and contextualised practical knowledge. The results of the study provide insight into the epistemological contribution of work integrating learning, suggesting a complimentary relationship between formal education and work-integrated learning that goes beyond the notion of the former simply including the latter as a stepping stone towards meaningful engagement in the workplace.

Indigenous Australian knowledges, diverse, current and relevant, informed by generations of experiences of eco-cultural sustainability, have much to contribute to the goals of global citizenship and sustainable development. However the violence of colonization, the oppression of racism and the demands of neoliberal globalization have led to an acute socio-political marginalization of unique local knowledges and languages. Racism, ideological assumptions and indifference remain the major socio- political barriers that oppress Indigenous opportunity. Having developed and delivered Indigenous Australian Studies courses and programs for largely non- Indigenous student cohorts in the higher education sector over the past twelve years, it is apparent that anthropological and other uncritical pedagogical approaches can work to justify and sustain socio-political power imbalances and hegemonic ideologies. Critical theoretical and pedagogical approaches have the capacity to problematise the dominance of Western constructions of meaning-making, as well as challenge what Dei (2008) describes as ‘skepticism’ or ‘epistemological racism’ with regard to Indigenous knowledges. Critical thinking and analytical skills, values that respect diversity and difference, combined with a commitment to social justice, human rights and equity are important critical pedagogical considerations for achieving the goals of graduating competent global citizens. Therefore, critical education can be seen as a prerequisite for global justice (Giroux, 2007). Nonetheless, critical pedagogical approaches for privileged learners are not without limitations because traditional critical pedagogy does not challenge normalized individual identities of social privilege. Critical pedagogy draws on and is significantly influenced by the work of Paulo Freire and is designed as an emancipatory strategy for oppressed learners. However access to undergraduate and graduate higher education for the oppressed is at best limited and therefore it is the privileged learner who becomes the primary focus for critical education in higher education for global citizenship. Whilst there is a proliferation of literature highlighting examples of successfully engaging critical pedagogy in the context of mass societal poverty, oppression and injustice, there remains a paucity of literature addressing the specific theoretical concerns and practical applications of engaging critical pedagogy for privileged learners. What has been acknowledged is that it is doubtful that critical education can contribute to meaningful social change without analysis or consideration of how privileged learners differ from oppressed learners. Taking Stuart Hall’s cue (1989), the objective of this presentation/workshop is to open a dialogic space where we can begin to interrogate and reflect on lessons learned about how we can ‘conduct an ethically responsible human discourse and practice about race, without religious, anthropological or scientific guarantees’. We need to explore the common opportunities, theoretical and practical challenges and limitations of engaging critical pedagogical approaches that strive to transform the oppressor, approaches that abet the transformation of privileged learners to become social justice allies. We must explore the holistic, embodied and emotive educative processes of social movements that motivate learners by head, heart and spirit. We must find opportunities for the development of a global ‘critical citizenry’ pedagogy (Giroux, 2007) that could be effective in working towards a more socially just and sustainable world where global citizens equitably share knowledge, power and resources.
