How to Round Decimals? (+FREE Worksheet!)

Want an explanation and example of how to round decimal numbers? Join us to learn and practice how to round decimals in a few simple steps.

How to Round Decimals? (+FREE Worksheet!)

Fractions whose denominator is \(10\) or \(100\) or \(1000\) or … are called decimal fractions.

Note:  In decimal numbers, the first digit after the decimal point is called the tenth, the second digit is the hundredth, the third digit is the thousandth, and so on.

Step-by-step guide to rounding decimals

  • Numbers are the key to accessing calculations. However working with decimal numbers is more difficult than with integers. In particular, our minds are not prepared enough to work on decimal numbers, and it is easier to do calculations, even approximately, with the help of integers. To do this, before performing the calculations, we “round” the decimal numbers to quickly increase our calculations. Of course, by doing so, we have reduced the accuracy of the calculations. When we round a number, the value of the result is an integer that is very close to the original number and can be an alternative to calculations. In this way, results are easier to understand when exact values are not too important.
  • ُ Step 1: First, you’ll need to remember your place values: For example: \(12.4568\) \(1\):tens, \(2\): ones, \(4\): tenths, \(5\): hundredths, \(6\): thousandths, \(8\): tens thousandths
  • Step 2: To round a decimal, find the place value you’ll round to.
  • Step 3: Find the digit to the right of the place value you’re rounding to. If it is \(5\) or bigger, add \(1\) to the place value you’re rounding to and remove all digits on its right side. If the digit to the right of the place value is less than \(5\), keep the place value and remove all digits on the right.

The Ultimate Algebra Bundle From Pre-Algebra to Algebra II

Rounding decimals – example 1:.

Round \(1.9287\) to the thousandth place value.

First look at the next place value to the right, (ten thousandths). It’s \(7\) and it is greater than \(5\). Thus add \(1\) to the digit in the thousandth place. The thousandth place is \(8\). \(→ 8 \ + \ 1=9\), then, the answer is \(1.929\)

Rounding Decimals – Example 2:

Round \(9.4126\) to the nearest hundredth.

First, look at the next place value to the right of the hundredth place. It’s \(2\) and less than \(5\), thus removing all the digits to the right. Then, the answer is \(9.41\).

Rounding Decimals – Example 3:

Round \(2.1837\) to the tenth place value.

First look at the next place value to the right, (hundredth). It’s \(8\) and it is greater than \(5\). Thus add \(1\) to the digit in the tenth place. The tenth place is \(1\). \( → 1+1=2\), then, the answer is \(2.2\)

Rounding Decimals – Example 4:

\(2.1837\) rounded to the nearest hundredth.

First, look at the next place value to the right of the hundredth. It’s \(3\) and less than \(5\), thus removing all the digits to the right. Then, the answer is \(2.18\).

Rounding means making a number simpler but keeping its value close to what it was.

The result is less accurate, but easier to use.

Example: 73 rounded to the nearest ten is 70 , because 73 is closer to 70 than to 80. But 76 goes up to 80.

Common Method

There are several different methods for rounding . Here we look at the common method , the one used by most people:

"5 or more rounds up"

First some examples (explanations follow):

How to Round Numbers

  • Decide which is the last digit to keep
  • Leave it the same if the next digit is less than 5 (this is called rounding down )
  • But increase it by 1 if the next digit is 5 or more (this is called rounding up )

Example: Round 74 to the nearest 10

  • We want to keep the "7" (it is in the 10s position)
  • The next digit is "4" which is less than 5, so no change is needed to "7"

(74 gets "rounded down")

Example: Round 86 to the nearest 10

  • We want to keep the "8"
  • The next digit is "6" which is 5 or more, so increase the "8" by 1 to "9"

(86 gets "rounded up")

When the first digit removed is 5 or more, increase the last digit remaining by 1.

Why does 5 go up ?

5 is in the middle ... so we could go up or down. But we need a method that everyone agrees to.

Think about sport: we should have the same number of players on each team, right?

And that is the "common" method of rounding. Read about other methods of rounding .

A farmer counted 87 cows in the field, but when he rounded them up he had 90.

Rounding Decimals

First work out which number will be left when we finish.

  • Rounding to tenths means to leave one number after the decimal point.
  • Rounding to hundredths means to leave two numbers after the decimal point.

3.1416 rounded to hundredths is 3.14

as the next digit (1) is less than 5

3.1416 rounded to thousandths is 3.142

as the next digit (6) is more than 5

1.2735 rounded to tenths is 1.3

as the next digit (7) is 5 or more

To round to "so many decimal places" count that many digits from the decimal point:

1.2735 rounded to 3 decimal places is 1.274

as the next digit (5) is 5 or more

Rounding Whole Numbers

We may want to round to tens, hundreds, etc, In this case we replace the removed digits with zero.

134.9 rounded to tens is 130

as the next digit (4) is less than 5

12,690 rounded to thousands is 13,000

as the next digit (6) is 5 or more

15.239 rounded to ones is 15

as the next digit (2) is less than 5

Rounding to Significant Digits

To round to "so many" significant digits, count digits from left to right , and then round off from there.

1.239 rounded to 3 significant digits is 1.24

as the next digit (9) is 5 or more

134.9 rounded to 1 significant digit is 100

as the next digit (3) is less than 5

When there are leading zeros (such as 0.006), don't count them because they are only there to show how small the number is:

0.0165 rounded to 2 significant digits is 0.017

Significant digit calculator.

(Try increasing or decreasing the number of significant digits. Also try numbers with lots of zeros in front of them like 0.00314, 0.0000314 etc)

Basics on the topic Rounding Decimals

Welcome to our exciting journey into the world of rounding decimals! Here, we aim to simplify complex numbers, making them more manageable and understandable, by using rounding to different place value.

Rounding decimals is used in our daily lives very often - it helps when estimating money, measurements or distances - therefore, learning how to round is a valuable skill not only in but also outside of school.

Rounding decimals is about approximating, or estimating, a decimal to a certain place value.

Are you ready to become a rounding expert? Let’s jump in!

Understanding decimals is key to mastering how to round them. A decimal number represents an equal part of a whole, just like a fraction . If you're new to decimals or need a refresher, our video What is a Decimal? for 4th graders is a perfect starting place.

Rounding decimals is similar to rounding whole numbers. Brush up on this foundational skill by checking out Rounding Multi Digit Numbers for 4th graders.

Feeling confident? Let's proceed to the world of rounding decimals together!

When rounding decimals, it is important to follow a few simple rules:

It's approximating a decimal number to a specific place value.

The digit in the hundredth place.

When the determining digit is 5 or greater.

Let’s explore some examples. Imagine rounding the number 3.673 :

To the nearest tenth: Look at the hundredth place (7) . Since 7 > 5, round up to 3.7 .

To the nearest hundredth: Look at the thousandth place (3) . Since 3 < 5, round down to 3.67 .

Try rounding the number 9.736 to the nearest tenth.

The value of the digit in the hundredth place is 3.

Because 3 is less than 5, we will round the tenth down.

The rounded decimal to the nearest tenth is 9.7

Try rounding the number 9.736 to the nearest hundredth.

The value of the digit in the thousandth place is 6.

Because 6 is more than 5, we will round the hundredth up.

The rounded decimal to the nearest hundredth is 9.74

Now that you are familiar with rounding rules and have seen a couple of examples, let’s try to complete a couple of trickier rounding exercises.

3.78 rounded to the nearest whole number is 4.

6.53 rounded to the nearest tenth is 6.5.

2.849 rounded to the nearest hundredth is 2.85.

0.57 rounded to the nearest whole number is 1.

4.9400 rounded to the nearest tenth is 4.9.

The following decimals will round up to 3.4 when rounded to the nearest tenth: 3.35, 3.36, 3.37,3.38, 3.39. The following decimals will round down to 3.4 when rounded to the nearest tenth: 3.40, 3.41, 3.42, 3.43, 3.44

A decimal number represents an equal part of a whole, just like a fraction .

Rounding decimals is about approximating , or estimating, a decimal to a certain place value.

Rounding decimals is used in our daily lives very often - it helps when estimating money, measurements or distances.

Rounding to the nearest tenth : Look at the hundredth place. Round up if ≥ 5, otherwise round down.

Rounding to the nearest hundredth : Look at the thousandth place. Round up if ≥ 5, otherwise round down.

Rounding decimals is the process of simplifying a decimal number to a nearby value, typically to a specific decimal place.

We round decimals to simplify numbers for easier understanding and calculation, especially when an exact number isn't necessary.

The basic steps include identifying the target decimal place, looking at the digit right after it, and increasing the target digit if the next digit is 5 or more.

To round to the nearest tenth, look at the digit in the hundredth place. If it's 5 or more, increase the tenth place by 1. If it's less than 5, keep the tenth place the same.

To round to the nearest hundredth, focus on the digit in the thousandth place. Increase the hundredth place by 1 if this digit is 5 or more, otherwise, leave it as is.

Yes, a decimal can be rounded to the nearest whole number by looking at the digit in the tenths place and applying the usual rounding rules.

The digits after the rounding point are either replaced with zeros or removed, depending on whether you're rounding to a decimal place or a whole number.

No, rounding a decimal doesn't always increase the number. It depends on the value of the digit right after the rounding point.

Yes, rounding decimals is important in real life for estimations, budgeting, and when precision is not crucial.

Transcript Rounding Decimals

The day of the long-awaited concert is finally here for Luis and Kai! They have all the details of the journey planned out, but they want to estimate how far they're traveling so they are prepared. We can do this by rounding decimals. Rounding decimals is a process that is used to approximate a number to a specific place value. This is useful in math and when working with money, measurements, and distances to help you get a good estimate. Rounding decimals follows similar steps and rules to rounding whole numbers. First, identify the place value that you are rounding to. If we were rounding to the tenths place, we would start here. Then, look to the digit to the right. If the value of the digit to the right is less than five, keep the number the same. If the value of the digit to the right is five or more, round the number up to the next one. When you write the rounded decimal number, get rid of every digit to the right of the number you are rounding. You only do this when rounding in the decimal places. Luis and Kai are ready for our help now! Their first stop is the train station, which is seven and two thousand three hundred forty-five ten-thousandths of a mile away. Round this number to the hundredth place. Here, we identify the hundredth place, a three. Now look to the right of this value, which is a four. Since four is less than five, we round down, which means the three stays as it is. When we write the rounded decimal, we lose the four and five after the hundredth place, since we rounded to the hundredth place. Seven and two thousand three hundred forty-five ten-thousandths rounded to the hundredth place is seven and twenty-three hundredths! The train station is seven and twenty-three hundredths of a mile away. From the train station, the concert is thirty-five and eight hundred ninety-three thousandths of a mile away. Let's see if we can round this number to the nearest tenths place. Pause the video to solve the problem, and press play when you are ready for the solution. Identify the tenth place value, which is eight. Look to the value to the right, which is a nine. Nine is five and above, so we round up. Thirty-five and eight hundred ninety-three thousandths to the nearest tenth place is thirty-five and nine tenths. The concert is thirty-five and nine-tenths of a mile away. Before we check out the concert, let's wrap it up! To summarize, rounding decimals is a similar process to rounding whole numbers. Simply identify the place value you're rounding, and look at the digit to the right. If it's less than five, round down, and if it's five and above, round up, and then drop every digit after the place value you're rounding to. "This is the best concert ever, Luis!"

Rounding Decimals exercise

Approximately how far is it to the concert.

To round to the nearest tenth , look at the digit in the tenths place and then at the digit to the right.

If it is 4 or below , keep the value in the tenths place the same . If it is 5 or above , round up .

To round to the nearest hundredth , look at the digit in the hundredths place and then at the digit to the right.

If it is 4 or below , keep the value in the hundredths place the same . If it is 5 or above , round up .

Rounded to the nearest tenth: 17.9 miles

  • Look at the digit in the tenths place, 9, then look at the digit to the right, 3, so we keep the value in the tenths place the same .
  • Look at the digit in the hundredths place, 3, then look at the digit to the right, 7, so we round up .

Can you round these numbers to the nearest tenth?

Look at the number in the tenths place and then at the digit to the right.

If the digit to the right is 4 or below , keep the value in the tenths place the same .

If the digit to the right is 5 or above , round up .

For example, if we were round 3.583 to the nearest tenth , we would look at the digit in the tenths place which is 5 .

We would then look at the digit to the right which is 8 . This means we would round up .

3.583 rounded to the nearest tenth is 3.6 .

Here we can see the matching pairs.

  • 21.234 rounded to the nearest tenth is 21.2
  • 28.875 rounded to the nearest tenth is 28.9
  • 21.438 rounded to the nearest tenth is 21.4
  • 28.1023 rounded to the nearest tenth is 28.1

Can you round these decimals?

Remember, if the digit to the right of the digit you are rounding to is 4 or below , the digit you are rounding to stays the same .

If it is 5 or above , round up .

If you are rounding to the nearest tenth , there should be one digit to the right of the decimal point.

If you are rounding to the nearest hundredth , there should be two digits to the right of the decimal point.

Let's work through an example:

Round 1.3156 to the nearest hundredth .

We would round up because the digit to the right of the hundredth place is 5 or above .

The correct answer would be 1.32 .

1) Round 8.7493 to the nearest hundredth .

Correct answer: 8.75

2) Round 4.5932 to the nearest tenth .

Correct answer: 4.6

3) Round 17.6434 to the nearest hundredth .

Correct answer: 17.64

Round these decimals to the nearest hundredth.

When rounding to the nearest hundredth , look at the digit in the hundredths place and then at the digit to the right.

If the digit to the right is 4 or below , keep the number the same .

For example, in 12.6653, there is a 6 in the hundredths place and the number to the right is 5 . This means we round up .

Numbers that round to 12.34

To the nearest tenth, how far away is the party?

When rounding to the nearest tenth , look at the digit in the tenths place and then at the digit to the right.

If the digit to the right is 5 or above round up .

Here, the digit to the right is 8 , so we need to round up .

The correct answer has one digit to the right of the decimal point.

The correct answer is 2.5 miles .

When rounding 2.4832 to the nearest tenth, we look at the digit in the tenths place, 4 , and then at the digit to the right, 8 .

As 8 is 5 or above , we round up .

The journey to the theme park.

If the digit to the right of the digit you are rounding to is 4 or below , keep the value the same .

For example, 8.4784 miles rounded to the nearest tenth would be 8.5 miles. This is because there is a 4 in the tenths place and a 7 to the right of this. 7 is 5 or above so we round up .

8.4784 miles rounded to the nearest hundredth would be 8.48 miles. This is because there is a 7 in the hundredths place and an 8 to the right of this. 8 is 5 or above so we round up .

The car sets off from Kai's house to go to Luis' house 2.4376 miles away. Rounded to the nearest tenth, this is 2.4 miles away. They then continue to the service station which is 23.7845 miles from Luis' house. Rounded to the nearest hundredth, this is 23.78 miles.

From here, the theme park is 37.6578 miles. Rounded to the nearest tenth, this is 37.7 miles.

During the day, Kai and Luis walk 6.5598 miles around the park. Rounded to the nearest hundredth, this is 6.56 miles. They had a great day!

A wonderful strategy for placing the decimal is to use estimation. For example if the question is 49.2 + 20.1, the answer without the decimal is 693. Estimate by rounding 49.2 to 50 and 20.1 to 20. 50 + 20 = 70. The decimal in 693 must be placed between the 9 and the 3 as in 69.3 to make the number close to the estimate of 70.
