Rose is appreciated for the fragrance and beauty despite thorns. It has thorns to make us realise that we all are imperfectly perfect. We have both good and bad qualities; strengths and weaknesses. No one is perfect. We should adopt this approach towards life and appreciate goodness of others and stop breeding on flaws. We should neither claim nor seek perfection. Same is the case with honey bees. They stung us but give us honey as well, so when people hurt us we should not forget their goodness and all the good things they have done for us.

Seasons also come with lessons. In winter we see a transition from fruit laden orchids to withered trees. This teaches us that beauty is just nine days’ wonder. Nothing in this world is permanent. The beauty of spring fade away in  autumn. It teaches us that time is like a spindle. Yesterday’s richest can become tomorrow’s destitute. It teaches us humility. Whenever we are bestowed with power, fame, and success we should not look down upon others, rather be humble and down to earth. For no one knows what tomorrow will hold. Flowers bloom, fruits ripen and water flows silently. Same way we should learn to grow silently without boasting.

Nature made us realise that there is some supreme power working behind the scenes. Blooming flowers, dancing paddy fields, fruit laden orchids, huge mountains, oceans and rivers, ravishing springs, changing of seasons, alternating of day and night – all this makes a person fall in love deeply with the creator. Almighty Allah, whose creativity has no match. Heart and soul reverberate with appreciation and  triggers us to  exclaim:

We were close to nature and away from material things in childhood. The floating clouds, the flying birds, the flowing streams, the blooming flowers, the blowing wind, the twinkling stars, the rising sun, the shining full moon, the rolling waves, the towering hills and the falling leaves – different forms of beauty – connect children with nature. There are lessons to learn from small artifices of nature, too. Flowers that spread fragrance in their surrounding teach us to spread love unconditionally. Trees give us lessons on how to exist despite unfavorable circumstances. As we grow and age, our innocence is replaced by experience. Such natural phenomenon as scorching summer, biting winter, rainfall and blows of wind make us feel that we are human beings of flesh & blood and that we exist. To be precise, the extreme forces of nature give us lessons on adversity and teach us how to survive. Travel to nature is the best escape, though temporary, from such grim slices of life as boredom. It revives our energy and enthusiasm. It blesses us with peace and joy. Nature has been there even before the evolution of human beings. 

Importance of Nature

If not for nature then we wouldn’t be alive. The health benefits of nature for humans are incredible. The most important thing for survival given by nature is oxygen. The entire cycle of respiration is regulated by nature. The oxygen that we inhale is given by trees and the carbon dioxide we exhale is getting absorbed by trees. 

The ecosystem of nature is a community in which producers (plants), consumers, and decomposers work together in their environment for survival. The natural fundamental processes like soil creation, photosynthesis, nutrient cycling, and water cycling, allow Earth to sustain life. We are dependent on these ecosystem services daily whether or not we are aware.

Nature provides us services round the clock: provisional services, regulating services, and non-material services. Regulating services include regulation of natural processes that include decomposition, water purification, pollution, erosion and flood control, and also, climate regulation. Non-material services are the non-material benefits that improve the cultural development of humans such as recreation, creative inspiration from interaction with nature like art, music, architecture, and the influence of ecosystems on local and global cultures. 

The interaction between humans and animals, which are a part of nature, alleviates stress, lessens pain and worries. Nature provides company and gives people a sense of purpose. 

Studies and research have shown that children especially have a natural affinity with nature. Regular interaction with nature has boosted health development in children. Nature supports their physical and mental health and instills abilities to access risks as they grow. 

Role and Importance of Nature

The natural cycle of our ecosystem is vital for the survival of organisms. We all should take care of all the components that make our nature complete. We should be sure not to pollute the water and air as they are gifts of Nature.

Humans in their quest for a comfortable living have been using the resources of nature mindlessly. As a result, massive deforestation, resultant environmental pollution, wildlife destruction, and global warming are posing great threats to the survival of living beings. 

Air that gives us oxygen to breathe is getting polluted by smoke, industrial emissions, automobile exhaust, burning of fossil fuels like coal, coke and furnace oil, and use of certain chemicals. The garbage and wastes thrown here and there cause pollution of air and land. 

Sewage, organic wastage, industrial wastage, oil spillage, and chemicals pollute water. It is causing several water-borne diseases like cholera, jaundice and typhoid. 

The use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in agriculture adds to soil pollution. Due to the mindless cutting of trees and demolition of greeneries for industrialization and urbanization, the ecological balance is greatly hampered. Deforestation causes flood and soil erosion.

Earth has now become an ailing planet panting for care and nutrition for its rejuvenation. Unless mankind puts its best effort to save nature from these recurring situations, the Earth would turn into an unfit landmass for life and activity.

Nature as a classroom: A space where teachers and students observe, learn, and wonder together

Going on a nature walk and creating a nature map that reflects the experience of sights, sounds, smells, tastes, textures, and memories is a great way to begin, shares the team at Nature Classrooms at Nature Conservation Foundation ( NCF ) , in i wonder… magazine.

Imagine all of nature as a classroom — a space where teachers and students observe, learn, and wonder together.

What creatures and phenomena in nature will you chance upon and witness? What are some of the questions and learnings that could emerge from these experiences?

Twenty minutes of exploring and observing, hand lens and binoculars in tow, brought many delightful creatures and stories into sharper focus for this group (see Fig. 2 ).

The word ​ ‘ nature’ can evoke different images, meanings, and memories for each of us (see Box 1 ).

Box 1 . What is ​ ‘ nature’? What images, thoughts, and memories come to your mind when you think of ​ ‘ nature’? Each of us may come with our own imagery, understanding, and positioning of what is ​ ‘ nature’. This can be based on our own lived experiences, the spaces and its various inhabitants that we have explored, engaged, empathised with, and what fits in our present scheme of life and beliefs.  The imagination of what a wild, ecologically rich place is for an ecologist who understands and studies this system will possibly be very different for someone who’s only been exposed to nature in a hyper-urban setting. We, at Nature Classrooms, approach nature as everything that inhabits this World with us, and that we humans are part of. As teachers and educators, let us remind ourselves not to get confused about the various terms and definitions that we encounter. Understanding these positions and accepting them is a great starting point, followed by a shared understanding that we can all learn together.  Let us try and empathise, and make more meaningful connections with the mammals, birds, invertebrates, trees, shrubs, rocks, streams and all the rest of the wonderfully diverse forms of life that the earth is home to.

Thus, as part of our nature learning workshops with school teachers and educators, we often begin conversations by understanding and unpacking this word (see Fig. 3 ).

Going on a nature walk and creating a nature map that reflects the experience of sights, sounds, smells, tastes, textures and memories is a great way to begin such conversations (see Box 2 ).

Box 2 . Sensory nature maps: Creating a sensory nature map is an exercise that encourages the use of our senses to focus attention on the natural world. It can help students and teachers closely observe and experience their immediate surroundings. To do this: Choose a comfortable spot where you can spend some time (~ 20  minutes) in silence. This can be a neighbourhood park or garden, around potted plants and other corners at home or even views from your window, balcony or terrace. Use as many of your senses (sight, touch, smell, hearing and taste) as possible to notice what is around you. Be aware of your feelings, thoughts, body sensations, and memories. Describe and draw your experience in a notebook to reflect the time you spent observing nature.

It can also help draw attention to the natural world that exists all around us, in every nook and corner. Even a short immersive experience, like the 20 -minute walk with primary school teachers, that is focussed on paying close attention to nearby nature can leave participants with a strong, renewed sense of connection to their immediate environment. 

Participants often share fond childhood memories of tree climbing escapades; making friends and having conversations with various creatures; or spending hours watching birds and insects while walking to school (see Box 3 ).

This is often followed by collective nostalgia, regret, and despair that similar opportunities may not exist for their students.

Box 3 . Reconnecting with nature: If we want students to experience the wonders, delights, and secrets the natural world has to offer, we must create similar opportunities for teachers and educators.  As adults we often forget the simple joy and wonder that things in nature can offer. From following a line of ants in our kitchen, to listening to birdsong outside our window, to watching a butterfly lay her eggs, to a spider stalking a pesky fly— the natural world is full of fascinating surprises waiting for us to take notice and love. Creating opportunities for nature walks as well as nature inspired reading, writing, and discussions for teachers will be a great beginning. A few other ideas for teachers and schools: Nature walks: looking for colours, patterns, shapes, and numbers in nature is a wonderful way to familiarise and re-familiarise oneself with a school campus or neighbourhood. Documenting observations by taking photographs and nature journaling will encourage curiosity and connection for teachers. Access to nature learning resources, guides, and libraries: a curated repository of nature stories, tree, insect, spider, and bird guides among other activity ideas and resources will be a great way for teachers to continue to learn and find answers along with students. Workshops, courses, and peer networks: participating in workshops and having access to a community of teachers and educators for inspiring ideas and collective solutions to challenges is a great way to sustain nature learning initiatives in schools. In what other ways can we reignite our love and connection with our immediate surroundings?

Nature learning as part of  EVS

Environment Studies ( EVS ) is a compulsory subject in primary education across different boards in India, and provides a wonderful opportunity to introduce students to their immediate environment.

However, an underlying narrative in the prescribed EVS curriculum is that ​ ‘ nature’ exists purely as a resource for people. This creates a false dichotomy of people and nature as separate entities. 

For example, a Grade III lesson on forests discusses the uses of trees for humans and how deforestation would harm human life, but makes no mention of how other plants, insects, and animals interact with trees. 

Similarly, it is not uncommon for end text questions in EVS chapters to ask students to list the different ways in which animals or plants are ​ “ useful” to people. Secondly, the EVS textbook often presents ​ ‘ nature’ as an entity that can be observed only in faraway forests, high mountains, and deep oceans. 

The fact that our backyards, streets and even buildings and homes are teeming with wonders of the natural world is rarely acknowledged!

Lastly, EVS textbooks are often devoid of examples that are relevant to the local and cultural context of students.

Since students in many classrooms in India come from diverse landscapes, geographies, and cultures, this separates the curriculum from their many unique lived experiences and connections with the natural world. 

For instance, while a child from central India may associate rain with rare relief and a child from the north-east may see it as an everyday experience, the curriculum often does not showcase this diversity or create opportunities for these conversations and reflections.

Since the teaching and learning of this subject also often remains largely confined within the four walls of the classroom, there are few opportunities for teachers and students to discover and observe their immediate surroundings themselves. 

Moreover, while nature education material exists in many different forms in India, school teachers often find it challenging to incorporate these resources in a sustained manner in conjunction with the mandated EVS  curriculum. 

This is because many common resources, like anchor charts, YouTube videos, magazine pictures and murals, often have images and information that require thorough fact-checking or are not contextually or culturally relevant (see Fig. 4 ).

If you go looking for nature and wildlife resources at a local bookstore, even in a city like Bangalore, you are likely to find posters with examples of only megafauna like tigers, elephants, rhinos and lions. 

They also often have visuals of animals, like giraffes, zebras and hippopotamuses, that are not found in the wild in India. These animals are likely to be visually familiar to students because of easy access to television, but how many of these creatures can students see around them? How many can they situate within their own lives and landscapes?

A nature education framework and pedagogy

Enriching and supplementing existing EVS curricula with locally relevant natural history examples, stories, and experiences can help make our and our students’ bonds with nature more meaningful and lasting. 

During school visits over the last few years, we have found that valuing children’s lived experiences and using local examples creates opportunities for independent exploration and sustains curiousity about the natural world (see Box 4 ).

Box 4 . Curiousity and wonder: One way to encourage wonder and cultivate a culture of inquisitiveness in students is to practise an inquiry- based teaching and learning approach. Making space for student questions not only increases their sense of ownership over their own learning, it is likely to encourage them to be more curious, engaged, and creative.  In fact, formulating questions is in itself a creative art that is known to facilitate learning and allow for co-construction of knowledge. Also, if encouraged by the teacher, wonderment questions can help students develop the ability to hypothesise, predict, and generate multiple explanations for natural phenomena. For instance, when students find a chewed-up leaf, teachers can approach this by asking — are all leaves chewed up by the same creature? Did one animal do this or many? What kind of mouthparts would they have to do this — a straw like in a butterfly, or with teeth like ours?

A child’s observations and serendipitous encounters in nature can make EVS classrooms a fascinating space where questions and new learning is encouraged (see Box 5 ).

Box 5 . Learning from observations of nearby nature: Like in any classroom, nature learning sessions can be filled with delightful experiences. This could include unexpected and unplanned visits by different creatures, like insects, spiders, reptiles, and birds, to the classroom or school grounds. A flowering or fruiting tree abuzz with activity during a nature walk can create excitement and lead to rich discussions. Serendipitous encounters need to be valued in everyday lessons because they hold immense potential for observation and learning. In one such instance, a cryptically coloured dragonfly flew in, and settled on one wall of a small Kannada medium government school in peri-urban Bangalore that has almost no outdoor space. The colouration and patterns of the dragonfly were beautifully camouflaged against the school’s compound wall. When we drew the students’ attention towards this camouflaged insect, their responses were filled with delight at noticing a creature that was hiding in plain sight! This encounter was not part of our lesson, but was a great opportunity to talk, with even very young students, about dragonflies, other flying insects, as well as the idea of camouflage in nature.  Some students observed and drew the dragonfly, some created a story or a poem, and some had interesting questions about dragonflies. There was so much that the students already knew and had observed. Rich discussions and several anecdotes followed — dragonflies in their hometowns and villages, swarms during the monsoons and around rain puddles.  A brief encounter with a dragonfly on the school wall had so much to offer — a chance to listen to and value past experiences and observations, while simultaneously creating opportunities for new learning.

With this in mind, we create age-appropriate resources across various topics that are part of the EVS curricula, and that link and build on each other.

One of these resources is a Nature Learning Framework that has emerged through conversations and consultations with educators, ecologists, and our own experience as trained naturalists and teacher practitioners (see Fig. 5 ).

This resource provides a starting framework for teachers and educators who want to include nature learning as part of their education interventions. 

It typically progresses from more concrete, experiential activities (for young children) to introduce them to nature that is immediately accessible to offering a more abstract, conceptual understanding of ecology and interconnectedness in nature (see Activity Sheet: Colours of Nature ).

We also highlight a variety of ageappropriate tools that can be used to introduce the natural world, like walks, stories, experiments, and interviews depending on the age group and space available. 

One example of this is a poster series on common plants, like the Giant Milkweed, Neem, and Singapore Cherry, and the various creatures that visit them (see Poster: Giant Milkweed).

We also recognise the need for an approach to teaching and learning about the natural world that puts students at the center of learning. 

Our Nature Learning Pedagogy has been developed through our own classroom observations and field experiences and, most importantly, through conversations and ideas generated with experienced teachers and nature educators (see Fig. 6 ).

Its key features are that it values students’ existing knowledge and lived experiences, and gives them the agency to actively ask and answer personally relevant questions while discovering more about phenomena and concepts in nature.

Our Nature Learning Framework and Nature Learning Pedagogy are living documents, open for review and modifications and incorporate suggestions and lived experiences

Fostering ecological identities

We believe that learning about and forging connections with nature is as essential for young students as early literacy or numeracy. This belief stems from growing evidence that meaningful connections with and awareness of the immediate natural world are often essential ingredients for our physical and emotional health and wellbeing.

As educator Ann Pelo says, engaging with nearby nature is instrumental in a conscious cultivation of ​ ‘ ecological identities’ in young students. Intimate awareness of one’s ecological identity and connection to nearby nature is sure to shape and determine the relationship young people share with the earth. 

A deep love and connection for a place and its various inhabitants can motivate us to treasure and take action on behalf of it.

Therefore, through early immersive experiences in nature, by sharing and telling stories, and through opportunities to explore and develop a fascination for nature, we hope that as educators we can foster love, wonder, empathy and curiousity in all students. 

In time, it is these deep emotional connections that will translate to how all of us treat, respect, and nurture it.

Teachers significantly impact the lives of their learners. They challenge their students to confidently think outside the box and counter new challenges. 

A good teacher will also support their learners when they take in new challenges and fail. They build their confidence to try again, inspire creativity, and encourage exploration and competition. 

Teaching is not a job but a calling. It is, therefore, crucial to acquire and perfect the required skills to efficiently inspire and grow students in their classrooms. 

Good teachers model behaviors of patience, empathy, communication, and understanding. Qualities that they can help grow in their learners. 

In this article, we discuss ten qualities of good teachers that should serve as motivation if you hope to impact the lives of your learners positively.

The Value of a Teacher’s Role

A teacher’s role is essential not only in the education system but also later on in the lives of their students. 

You can make a difference in your student’s life by influencing everything, from educational goals to after-school success. 

Good teachers help their students reach more success, understand themselves better, and make well-thought decisions that will help them make the right choices to propel them to greater heights in life. 

To be good at your job as a teacher, you must love it. Passion is infectious; your students will feel passionate about the subject if you are passionate about it. 

Also, you can cultivate self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-worth in your learners in your daily interactions. 

Your interactions with your students also guide them into laying the foundation for meaningful relationships, understanding their feelings, and navigating challenging situations.

Outstanding teachers have certain qualities that make them rise above the rest of their student’s lives. Such teachers have a way of remaining in our memories no matter how far removed from our school years. 

Studies from the Economic Policy Institute show that good teachers contribute more to student achievement than learning facilities and school leadership. 

Here are our top ten qualities that make a good teacher:

1. Great communicators

When you possess excellent communication skills, you will know how to teach your subject in a learner-friendly and engaging way. 

This will, in turn, improve their understanding and achievement as it will bring you closer to them and help them present any concerns they may have regarding any learned content. 

For instance, a finance class will be easier to understand if the teacher uses everyday examples with which the students are familiar. 

2. Experts in their field

Your students will be motivated to learn if you are an expert in your field. If you love your teaching area, you will show that expertise in the classroom. 

Once you have mastered the content in your subject area, you can use different angles to explain the subject matter; hence be very resourceful when teaching. 

For instance, a math teacher can use the rows and columns in the class to enhance understanding of matrices. 

3. Collaboration

Collaboration in teaching creates a growth-based learning environment that increases student learning processes.

You should work closely with other teachers and your students if you aim for great results. 

Collaborating with other teachers helps you learn from each other, allowing you to brainstorm new ideas. This is significant in improving learner outcomes. 

A good teacher is also interested in learning from parents about their students. This equips you with an understanding of how to help your students better.

Empathy is how you understand your learner’s emotional, social, and intellectual situations. A good teacher can respond empathetically to a learner’s admirable and ugly emotions without losing focus on student learning. 

For instance, if your best student failed a test. Your first instinct might be to reprimand them and for an explanation for their poor performance. On the other hand, consider putting yourself in their situation, imagine how they are feeling, and empathize with them. 

Seek to understand how they feel about the dismal performance, what they think they did wrong, and then suggest ways to improve the result. Assure them that they have a chance to turn things around. 

When your learners feel physically, mentally, and emotionally safe, they will engage better in your subject as they feel loved and understood. 

You can grow your empathetic touch by reading books on such, taking courses on empathy, and attending seminars that build on this. 

5. Loving challenges

A great teacher loves challenges. A classroom environment is full of varied challenges; therefore, embracing them is a sure way to manage them. 

Once you love your challenges, you will teach your learners more effectively. This is because a teacher who loves challenges will grow to challenge students. Students love challenges, provided they are presented in a kind spirit. 

You can draw your students to love challenges by asking thought-provoking questions that get learners to think about sequencing and predictions. 

Challenging them will push them to work harder, improve, and achieve beyond their imagination. 

6. Creativity

Although not all subject areas promote creativity, they can all be taught creatively. 

For instance, a biology teacher teaching about different kinds of plants would take students to the natural habitat to exploit the topic practically. Also, a literature teacher would more creatively use film to enhance the mental correlation of a play the learners are reading as a literary text. 

A science teacher would use real solutions more creatively when teaching learners to test for bases and acids. Learners always appreciate the extra mile. 

When you creatively motivate your learners, they are motivated to do this in education and their lives after school. 

7. Constant growth 

Teachers need a growth mindset that prepares them for the classroom environment. Continuous learning will equip you with invaluable knowledge to progressively inspire your students. The growth mindset is essential because it will enable you to collaborate with your learners with the understanding that they can learn it to a higher level. 

A view that continuous growth is essential will create a love of learning and resilience in just one area. It empowers your learners to believe they can develop their abilities with brains and talents as starting points. 

The need for growth will motivate you to focus on creativity and intelligence, the two factors that result in success in both your academic and professional lives. 

8. Patience

When managing learners, your patience is constantly tested. You will also deal with learners, parents, and colleagues with differing perspectives, backgrounds, and characters. This requires patience. 

For instance, with your learners and their parents, you must be patient in repeatedly dealing with the same questions and issues.

Also, some of your learners will have difficulties understanding various concepts; it’s essential that you keep going but should continuously try out new ways of helping them succeed. 

9. Adaptability

Your environment as a teacher is constantly evolving. This demands that you continually adapt to the constant changes and adjust your teaching methods to suit the age and intellect of your learners. 

Also, with the continuously changing educational frameworks, being able to adopt those changes makes you a good teacher. 

Adaptability is also one of the essential skills that you will require if you are educating learners of varying grade levels or those with different learning styles.

Many educators imply respect, but few understand how to use it in the classroom. 

As a good teacher, you must be mindful of any imbalance in respect and ensure that your students feel respected and heard.

Some of the desired class management skills include:

  • Setting high but achievable expectations for your students – You can do this by teaching them about growth mindsets. They should believe that success is within their control. Reinforce in them daily that they can succeed if they put in the effort. 
  • Good planning skills – With good planning skills, you will help students identify their goals and guide them in deciding what their priority is. Teach them how to plan their learning by breaking their tasks into steps to make them more manageable. Teaching learners how to plan will also eliminate uncertainty in the mind, which in most learners results in procrastination. 
  • Creating a sense of community- A sense of community will create a social connection and a sense of belonging among your learners. You can establish this community within your students by consistently holding class meetings every morning to focus on building social and emotional skills and establishing relationships among them. 

Common Weaknesses of Teachers

Teachers, even the most experienced, are helpful with some weaknesses. Every teacher would like to see themselves as being perfect, but admitting that we are all flawed in different ways is the first step to becoming better teachers tomorrow. 

Here are some common weaknesses in teachers: 

Perfectionism

Making mistakes is a normal part of human life. Perfectionism is a fear-based pattern whose short-term rewards are getting the job done and exceeding expectations. Its long-term effects, however, include burnout, compromised quality of work, and missed deadlines. 

Being afraid to make mistakes primes us for burnout and overwhelms us with fear, factors that distort our functioning as teachers. 

Dealing with others as a perfectionist is challenging since you will always want them to do things your way, allowing little room for the ideas and imperfections of others. 

Perfectionism also prevents you from taking constructive criticism from colleagues who may want to share relevant observations on your interaction. 

Though no one is perfect, some teachers seem to have it together, and this may be the basis for our comparison. Comparison can hinder your success as a teacher if you are constantly comparing yourself with colleagues you view as perfect. 

Learning helpful hints and new ideas from teachers with the strengths we would like to possess would help you overcome comparison.

For instance, if a colleague is better at relating with learners and they look up to her more for guidance, instead of getting all jealous and bitter at her, seek to know what she does differently to get the students to open up to her. 

Spontaneous

If you are a spontaneous teacher, you act without planning but will rely on previous experience teaching diverse classes and using different approaches to teaching. 

Spontaneity in learning is not all bad, as it helps adjust the power imbalances in a typical classroom. Spontaneous teaching, however, can have some adverse effects on learning. This can result in a lack of structure to your lesson and poor lesson organization. It may also limit your degree of learner assessment of learner progress and achievement. 

To avoid the adverse effects of spontaneity, find a balance between flexibility and structure in the lesson. Consider the individual learner’s needs and learning abilities when deciding on the instructional method. 

Becoming a Good Teacher

A chosen path can guide you into becoming a better teacher. Many specialties are available, so knowing what grade you want to teach and what subject area you are passionate about is essential. 

Here are some steps to take toward becoming a good teacher. 

Bachelor’s Degree 

A bachelor’s degree is crucial to becoming a good teacher. Though most states will require a bachelor’s degree in education, alternative routes to licensure are also available. 

 It will allow you to learn essential skills that will help you become a better teacher. Such include:

  • Cognitive skills : A degree program grows your ability to recall, integrate, and analyze information. You will be able to foster critical and creative thinking skills that guide fluency, originality, flexibility, and adaptability in developing and adjusting to learner programs. 
  • Communication skills: Acquiring communication skills enables you to interact and collaborate effectively with your learners in delivering and assessing knowledge acquisition. Efficient communication is necessary when also engaging with students’ families and colleagues. 
  • Research skills: The skills to initiate and complete data collection concerning learner performance and curricula are essential in effective instruction. A bachelor’s degree program will guide you into effectively demonstrating, considering consequences, information presentation, and record keeping. 
  • Social skills: A good teacher is sensitive to ethical and integral processes of establishing functional relationships with all the school community members. What Makes an Effective Teacher? Analytical Essay

An effective teacher, pedagogy and practice, the way these factors interact, professional characteristics, access and fairness, classroom climate and management, impact of educational reforms, the nature of learners and learning.

From the image of an effective teacher, the analysis will be based on the teacher’s qualification as well as career history, her skills of instruction, her professional characteristics as well as the classroom setting or management (Jones, Jenkin, & Lord, 2006).

In general, there are three major factors espoused from the image and include the setting of classroom, skills of teaching and professional characteristics.

From the image, effective teaching entails making hard and principled decisions, making cautious decisions, as well as respecting the intricate nature of the mission of educational (Farr, 2010).

On top of the technical skills and knowledge the teacher uses in his everyday practice, he or she must be conscious of his profession’s ethical direction.

Different from the two factors discussed above is the classroom setting. Generally, it connotes or denotes a measure of results delivered by professional characteristics and skills of instruction.

The classroom setting allows the instructor to fully comprehend or know the level of contentment of her students in class. The contentment is in the context of different dimensions of classroom setting created by the teacher and which functions to instigate or initiate student motivation to learn.

From the image, the professional skills or characteristics help the teacher to hold his student to account. This generally involves setting up clear objectives as well as parameters in order to hold students responsible for their performance in class.

This behavior pattern makes it easier for the instructor to fully display skills of instruction such as offering opportunities for students or learners to be in charge of their conduct or to be accountable in their studies.

When this happens, skills of instruction are put into use and students are likely to feel that there is some feeling or sense of orderliness in class or even some form of support that allows them to attempt novel things (Farr, 2010).

This should not be generalized as it is only an example relating to the image used in discussion. Other methods of instruction might turn out to be highly effective in other settings with different students.

It must be emphasized that in education, there are many ways that determine the way instructors choose the approaches to employ in classroom in order to fully influence the way his or her students feel about the instruction in general.
