Why are Welcome Speeches Necessary?

Most of the gatherings and ceremonies are held with a purpose. They are either planned events or spontaneous gatherings. In both cases, it is important to know how to organize such events. We must prepare ourselves to conduct the event properly.

Let us imagine that you are hosting a gathering. You have prepared everything, including food, drinks, decorations, etc., and even set up the stage. However, you forgot one thing – a welcome speech. What happens next? Do you start talking immediately without waiting for everyone to arrive? Of course not!

The same goes for a meeting. How many times did you attend meetings where people didn’t introduce themselves? Or worse, they talked about themselves too much during the meeting. In addition, some speakers talk directly to the audience without introducing themselves. This makes it difficult for the attendees to comprehend the event’s process and connect with its objectives.

50+ different ways to say welcome to your guests

The challenge of a welcome speech is to find alternate ways to express yourself sincerely without resorting to a string of undifferentiated "same-old, same-old" words and phrases that have become meaningless through overuse to greet your guests with.

And there's an additional question to answer. Is the event formal or informal? Your response will guide the language choices you make.

Do you need to use formal or informal language?

Is the welcome speech you're preparing formal or informal?  

There are major differences. The words you use in an informal speech will be entirely out of place in a formal one. You need to know what is right for the occasion if you want your speech to be a success.

How to avoid repetition making your speech boring!  

Repetition of a familiar word is easy to do and totally understandable.

Sometimes we can't find the words we want, and we get stuck in a vocabulary rut, using the same phrase or word over and over, and over again, trying to make it cover multiple and/or different situations.

And yet we know, words are just like clothes. One size does does not fit all.

What's the solution?

Here's three suggestions to individualize or tailor your words to fit your event a little better. And they'll be more interesting for the audience to listen to!

With care you'll find most will adapt either formal or informal use.

1. Add an adjective to the word welcome

Try working in an adjective to describe the quality of your welcome more fully.

I've provided an example sentence or two alongside each adjective to show how it could be used in context.

I know some examples are much more successful, (smooth to say and read), than others.

Some, quite frankly, clunk a little. (I say this with a wry smile ☺!) 

If you decide to use the feature word in those that do, perhaps you'll find a way to use it more eloquently!  

What sort of welcome are you offering?

It could be a(n):

  • warm  welcome " Luckily the weather is on our side today! The sun and I are pleased to offer you a warm welcome."
  • hearty  welcome  "Here's a hearty welcome, big and warm enough to encompass you all! To say we are thrilled to see you is an understatement."
  • cheerful  welcome "It's my pleasure to extend a cheerful welcome to you all! Your presence makes us very happy."
  • cordial  welcome "Fellow members, please join me in giving our guests the most cordial of welcomes."
  • sociable  welcome "Let's hear it for a sociable welcome! On the count of three, turn to your neighbor and say 'hello'. There are no strangers here, only  friends we are yet to meet."
  • genial  welcome "It's my pleasant duty to bid you all a genial welcome."
  • convivial  welcome "On behalf of my colleagues, I wish you all a convivial welcome. We are going to have a merry and enjoyable time together."
  • agreeable  welcome "The flags are flying. The balloons are ready for release. It's a great day, one we've been planning and waiting for. I'm sure you'll concur, this is an agreeable welcome."
  • pleasing  welcome "It's gratifying to look around and see so many familiar faces. That's a pleasing welcome to what I know is a going to be a great  conference ... "

Or maybe it's a(n):

  • glad  welcome "It's a glad welcome we bring to you this morning, filled with the desires, hopes and dreams we all share."
  • hospitable  welcome "We're delighted to offer the most hospitable welcome we can."
  • amiable  welcome "Dear guests, look around you! An amiable welcome full of friendship is yours."
  • gracious  welcome "Our desire is to extend a gracious and inclusive welcome to all of you. For now let's put aside our differences and instead celebrate what brings us together!"

What about a(n):

  • pleasant  welcome "You know what's great about these events? You are always assured of a pleasant welcome. This is feel-good central and we aim ..."

  • grateful  welcome "Many of you have made a huge effort to join us today. On behalf of us all, we are deeply appreciative and offer you our most grateful welcome."
  • friendly  welcome "Today is the day we begin to learn to look through the eyes of others; to find out and experience what the world is like for them. It is also the day we grow bigger than our differences and offer to everyone regardless of historical rights and wrongs, a friendly welcome, an outstretched hand."

  • appreciative  welcome "Wow, what a gathering we have here tonight. We've got dignitaries, celebrities, fans, and organizational members all brought together for one cause. Ours. Here's an appreciative welcome to you all."
  • superb  welcome "Ladies and gentlemen, the room is ready. The tables are set. The band is playing our theme song. And the waiting staff are preparing to take your orders. This is a superb welcome, fit for royalty, and that's what you are to us."
  • delighted  welcome "To our special guests; look around. See the smiles of everyone's faces? We are truly delighted to welcome you here today."
  • favored  welcome "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we have stars in the sky, and on stage. We are favored to welcome some the brightest the world has seen."
  • honored  welcome "I look around the stage and am in awe with the collected expertise gathered here. We are deeply honored to welcome you."
  • big  welcome "Here's to a big welcome for our guests; Lady Amelia Thistledown and Sir Roger Godfrey!"
  • huge  welcome "Ladies and gentlemen, please give a huge welcome to ..."
  • rapturous  welcome "Do you hear the applause? The audience joins me in a rapturous welcome! We are thrilled to have you with us today."

2. What about the guests you want to welcome?

Think about the guests you want to welcome as part of your speech. What sort of guests are they?  Is there a word, or two, you could use to describe them more fully?

Accurate descriptions of the people coming to the event, either as especially invited guests, or as members of the audience, helps build credibility and trust.

The care you take to find the right words is an excellent investment for everybody involved.

3. What about the word "guests"?

Who are you talking to? Yes, everybody in the audience is a guest to your event but what could they be more accurately called? 

Are these people your:

  • colleagues?
  • associates?
  • classmates?
  • co-collaborators?
  • fellow-travelers, nurses, teachers ... ? (insert the appropriate descriptor)
  • affiliates?
  • conspirators?
  • companions?

And lastly, have fun experimenting!

Do try mixing and matching your words and phrases to fit the occasion. After all there are more flavors to "welcome" than vanilla!

Greeting the Audience

Step 1 Welcome the audience using serious language for a formal occasion.

  • Keep the tone more serious if it's an important occasion. Use more formal language and don't crack any inappropriate jokes. For example, at a wake, you might say, "We're so glad to have you all here tonight. We appreciate your presence at this difficult time."

Step 2 Greet guests informally by using light-hearted language.

  • For an event with close friends and family, more informal language might be appropriate. Include a few jokes and keep your speech more lighthearted.

Grab your audience's attention with a strong opening. Start with a loud voice and a strong presence that welcomes everyone and gets them involved. Ask a question they can respond to or tell a joke — anything to connect with the audience. Do something that grabs their attention and excites them and makes them thrilled about the event.

Step 3 Add individual greetings for any special guests.

  • Special guests include any people of honor, those that may play a particularly important part in the event, or those who have traveled a long way to be there.
  • Make sure that you practice all of names, titles, and pronunciations of the special guests before your speech.
  • For example you could say, "We'd like to extend a special welcome to our guest of honor, Judge McHenry, who will be speaking later tonight."
  • Alternatively to welcome a group of people you might say, "While we're excited to have you all here tonight, we'd especially like to say welcome to the students from Johnson Middle School."

Step 4 Introduce the event itself.

  • For an informal event such as a birthday party, you could say, "We're so happy to have you here tonight to eat, drink, and celebrate another year of Jessica's life. Now, let's get to it."
  • For a more formal event such as one run by an organisation, you could say, “We are so excited to have you all here to participate in our 10th annual pet’s day, organised by the Animal Rescue Group.”

Forming the Body of the Speech

Step 1 Acknowledge those who have played an important part in the event.

  • An example of acknowledging individual people is saying, “We couldn’t have pulled off this fundraiser without the hard work and dedication of Grace and Sally, who worked tirelessly from day 1 to make today a reality.”
  • Avoid reading off a long list of people or sponsors, as your audience will begin to get bored. Stick to just a handful of highlights.

Step 2 Mention any parts of the event that are of special importance.

  • For instance, at a conference, you might point out when the dinner will be held, or where particular sessions will take place.
  • At a wedding reception, you might note when dancing will start or when the cake will be served.

Step 3 Reiterate your welcoming line.

  • Alternatively, you could end the body of your speech during an informal gathering by saying, “I can't wait to see you all out on the dancefloor!”

Ending the Speech

Step 1 Say that you hope the audience enjoys the event, if applicable.

  • You could also say that you hope that the audience takes something away from the event. For example, “I hope that today inspires ideas and discussions around the ways that we can make our city a better place!”

Step 2 Introduce the next speaker if necessary.

  • At a formal event, you might say, "Now, for our speaker. Rebecca Roberts comes here from Montreal, Canada, and she is a leading expert in the study of the human brain. She'll be speaking tonight on what drives humans to make decisions. Let's welcome her."
  • For a more informal event such as a party, you could say, “Next up is Sam, who has been Kyle’s best friend for 10 years strong. He has a decade of embarrassing stories about Kyle to share with us tonight!"

Step 3 Thank the audience for attending.

  • Alternatively you might say, “Thank you again to everyone for being here tonight to celebrate Joe and Kathleen’s 50th wedding anniversary! Let the celebrations begin!”

Step 4 Keep your speech within a suitable time limit.

  • If you are unsure, ask the organiser or host what an appropriate length of time for your speech will be.

To write a welcome speech, start with a greeting to your audience that’s appropriate to the situation. A warm welcome speech can make it easier to set the tone for an event. Your welcome speech decides how warm and enthusiastic the event is going to be. Thus, do not mind doing a couple of extra practices. Also, your welcome speech can be as simple or as formal as the situation demands. In the following guide, we will discuss some tips to help you warmly welcome your audience and chief guests. Furthermore, we will look at some welcome speech examples.

If your school or college has chosen you to present a welcome speech, it is because they trust you. Therefore, it is your foremost responsibility to show them that you deserve their trust by honoring the guest out in the event.

Before you step on the stage, you should know that you need the following elements.

  • Humility : On the stage, try to act humbly to please your audience and guests.
  • Names of the guests and their correct pronunciation : Double check all the names and their correct pronunciations.
  • Topics to discuss : You should have a list of topics you are going to discuss during the event.
  • Purpose of the event : Most importantly, you should be aware of the purpose of the event. Also, gather enough information about the event and past related occurrences.

Initially, once you have stood behind the podium, try to have a careful look around. If there are not a lot of people, check who is sitting where. This makes it easier to address people properly later during the event.

If there is a huge audience, just check out the people you will need to address later. This is important because it gives you confidence and awareness.

Now that you are confident enough about your environment, you are good to go. So, you can begin with a warm smile and a polite tone. First, introduce yourself and thank your audience for coming. Be humble and speak for a couple of minutes thanking and welcoming your guests.

For instance,

Good morning/ Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. It is wonderful to have you all on this wonderful day. It is me (insert name of the host), your host for today. On behalf of our respected principle (name of the principal) and my team, I am pleased to welcome you all to our auspicious event. I welcome dear parents , respected teachers and our guests. And I hope we will have a good time together.

Then, address each special guest, take their names and pay tribute to their achievements. You can share stories that link you and the guest. But remember to take their permission before. If they do not feel comfortable in sharing the story, do not share.

Also, remember to double check the guests’ names, facts, and figures about them. And most importantly, check the correct pronunciation of your guests’ names.

To make any event happen, there are contributions of various people and groups. After welcoming your guests, you should thank those who have contributed to making the event possible.

These people range from the organizers of the event to the people backstage working hard to make everything look perfect. Furthermore, if it is not possible to take each person’s name, take the names of their group only. But thank them for their contribution.

Once you have thanked your audience for their presence and your team for their contribution, brace the purpose or goal of your event. Tell them why you all have gathered here that day. How the purpose of the event effects you and them. And how can you contribute something good to the purpose of the event.

Share your personal view and hopes about the event and the purpose of the event. Besides, you can share your personal experiences about the topic of the day unless it does not make your event boring.

Lastly, end your speech by wishing all your audience an enjoyable day. Let them know that you enjoy and appreciate their presence. Also, thank them for listing to you. For example,

Thank you so much for having me. I am extremely delighted and honored to be amongst the galaxy of intellectuals such as yours. It is an extremely beautiful day and I am happy to be sharing it with you.

Then, introduce the next person and leave with a warm smile on your face.

  • Your welcome speech should be polite and predictable. Besides, avoid being benign and boring.
  • Begin with a powerful and passionate introduction to grab your audience attention. Then, keep their attention throughout the event.
  • Your beliefs and hopes about the event should be crystal clear with your welcome speech.
  • Also, let your audience know why you are the person who should be welcoming them.
  • Storytelling can be a great tool to keep your audience attentive throughout the event. So, tell them stories they can relate to.

I have been pondering over the induction of a lit club at my school, and thankfully this year we have been able to start one. Post searching a lot over the net and post mixing some of my ideas this is a list of activities one could use to foster a literature club at their school. I have taken a lot of ideas from SASKATCHEWAN ELOCUTION AND DEBATE ASSOCIATION, www.saskdebate.com.  Thanks to them for keeping their draft over the internet for us to see.

·         Develop listening skills

·         Develop writing skills

o   Draw inferences and conclusion

·         To learn to be a part of Group Discussions and other such speech related activities like

o   Impromptu speech / Extempore speech

o   Literary Jam

o   Arguments and Counter Arguments

o   Declamation

Activity (1) – Three Corners Debate

Description: This activity introduces students to persuasion. By the end of the lesson, students are able to express their positions, as well as opposing arguments, on a particular issue.

Objectives:

1. Students will work in groups to clearly verbalize their positions on a specific issue/topic.

2. Students will practice listening skills while other groups present their positions.

3. Students will be able to use convincing arguments to sway others’ opinions.

4. Students will write a 5-paragraph persuasive essay that presents point of view clearly and addresses opposing positions.

• 3 large pieces of paper with these words written on them: Agree, Somewhat Agree, Disagree

·         Post the three pieces of paper in the three corners of the classroom.

·         Write a controversial topic on the board (for example: Schools should eliminate report cards / There should be no uniform in the school/ there should be no fix timings for school/ Students should select teachers / There should be separate schools for boys and girls).  

·         Have students move to the corner that best matches their position (Agree, Somewhat Agree, Disagree)

·         Ask each of the students to write down 3-5 points supporting their stand.

·         Ask students to come together to their corner and form a group and discuss their points for 5 minutes.

·         Each group selects a spokesperson to express the group’s position. He/she has 1 minute to express thoughts concisely and persuade their classmates. Other groups must listen intently. Direct each group to present their group’s position in turn.

·         Allow students to move to the appropriate corners if they have changed their minds.

·         Ask all the students to go back to the page which they have written initially and summarise their point of view and their supporting logic. Each student will write a 5-paragraph persuasive essay. In order to receive a maximum score, the student must express his position clearly, use appropriate logic, and address opposing viewpoints.

·         Students will present a presentation with max 6-7 slides on any topic of their liking.

3. Students will be able to summarize the main arguments of the speech.

4. Students will be able to explain the historical significance of the speech.

·         Each student will write down on a page the common traits between the three speakers.

·         Teacher will ask nominations for the post of Literary Club president.

·         Nominated will prepare a speech and class would vote post listening to them.

Description:

Two groups will be formed to argue which is a better choice – Eclairs or Alpenliebe.

This lesson can be used to teach the beginning stages of argument, students also use their writing skills. Students use examples of price, advertising appeal, ease of consumption, appearance, dangers, nutrition facts, feel, smell, and taste to support their topic.

1. Students will be able to develop a thesis statement and two paragraphs which support that thesis statement using appropriate forms, conventions and styles to communicate ideas and information to an audience (for the purposes of persuasion and argumentation).

2. Students will be able to write a paragraph identifying one opposing viewpoint and write another paragraph that attempts to challenge that viewpoint.

• Éclairs and Alpenliebe for participants

• Pen and Paper

·         Distribute the chocolates within the class randomly.

·         Ask students to have the chocolate and save the wrapper. Students with the same wrapper can sit together.

·         Inform students that they are to begin a unit about argumentation.

·         Tell them that they are going to argue about something very important today — Chocolates!  Tell the students that they need to imagine that there are only two brands of chocolates in the world — the ones being discussed.

·         Encourage them to work together to make a list of the top 10 points for why their chocolate bars are the best.

·         After they have come up with their lists, have each group elect a representative to write their 10 reasons on the board. The result will be a split board with éclairs on one side and Alpenliebe on the other side.

·         Next, have students vote on which of their side’s three reasons best representing why their respective chocolates are the better value. Erase all the others. This will result in a split board with three strong points for each side.

·         Then, tell the groups that they are to individually, or in teams of two or three, write a thesis statement which expresses the idea that their chocolate is the best value. Then they are to craft two short paragraphs of three or more sentences (the paragraphs must be linked with transitional expressions) for each point they’ve chosen for their side.

·         While students are working, assist each group and view their progress. The result will be a thesis statement and two paragraphs which support it.

·         After the paragraphing is complete, tell the students how important it is when arguing to be fair and to demonstrate that others may have differing opinions.

·         Then, direct them individually, or in teams of two or three, assume the position of the other side and identify what they consider to be that side’s strongest point about why they have the best value chocolates.

·         Eclairs groups will write a paragraph supporting Alpenliebe and vice versa. Encourage students to spend a few minutes in discussion with members of the opposing groups, so they can adequately explain and support their points.

·         Eclairs members will solicit information from Alpenliebe members and vice versa.

·         While they are working, assist each group and view their progress. The result will be one paragraph, linked to the first two, which demonstrates the opposing position.  This will be one challenge paragraph linked to the previous three paragraphs. Encourage students to share their completed paragraphs.

Assessment: Collect students’ paragraphs to assess completeness and students’ ability to logically demonstrate argumentation in writing.

(a). Devil’s Advocate

Purpose: To provide opportunity to speak in a direct clash environment. One person speaks, and advocate clashes or raises a related point.

(b). Two Person Clash

Purpose: To give each student practice with directly opposing another’s argument in a non-threatening environment. To practice listening and note taking skills.

Size: Played by the entire class simultaneously, in groups of two.

Structure: The students break into pairs. One person rises and states a series of opinions for up to 2 minutes. The other one makes a flow sheet (see attached). When person number one sits down, the second person stands and directly attacks all the arguments of the first speaker for up to two minutes. While this happens, the first speaker completes a flow sheet. Then the first speaker stands again, and directly argues for one minute. The class will need about 5 minutes preparation time to think of arguments and decide a topic. Since all the pairs do the activity at the same time, students are less self conscious.

Topic: The topics vary. Students may choose topics themselves by searching for something they disagree about. Alternatively the teacher may provide the topics and students select the sides.

Activity (5) – Impromptu Speeches

Subject: Language Arts, Social Studies, Science

Duration: 20 – 60 minutes

Description : To help students practice developing and organizing thoughts quickly and clearly.

1. Students will be able to speak fluidly on an unprepared topic confidently.

2. Students will speak in a persuasive manner.

·         Prepare a number of possible topics. They may or may not be linked to a unit of study or class investigation.

·         Create chits on random topics, place them in a basket in the middle of the group of student. Topics for beginning students could include: simple statements or topics 1 – what is your favorite book, what is your favorite movie , what is your favorite movie star, what is the worst food you’ve eaten. Topics for experienced students could include: resolutions – general, issue based or off beat like literary quotations & or characters – historical characters or events, artistic reproductions

·         First student invited to speak will get 3 minutes minute to think before starting to speak.

·         The next student will pick the chit as soon as the first one starts to speak.

Observation

The analysis of the speakers would be on following parameters

Delivery Technique:

Facial Expression (relaxed, animated, and responsive)

Vocal Expression (variance, rate, pitch, volume, intensity, inflection)

Diction, Grammar, and Word Usage (No “you know’s,” “um’s,” or “ah’s”)

Eye Contact (looks at audience, not overly dependent on notes)

Bodily Action and Gestures (relaxed, comfortable stance, no distracting movements, notes handled well)

Organization and Content:

Introduction (attention step)

Body (followed organized outline and developed points)

Conclusion (summary and closing comments)

Description: An exercise in impromptu speaking using three ‘topics’ (person, place & thing) which the speaker must link together in a cohesive speech.

1. The student will be able to connect three dissimilar topics in a coherent speech.

2. The student will perform an organized speech with introduction, reasoning and conclusion.

3. The student will speak fluently for 3 – 5 minutes in length.

Full Class or Small Group

One Speaker, One Moderator which may or may not be the Teacher and Time Keeper.

• Topics that are Person, Place and Thing – An example is attached but please modify this list to the grade, subject and ability level.

• Three topics copied on different coloured paper

• Optional: Time Keeper with timer & time cards (numbers ½ – 10 and STOP)

Explain the purpose of Triple Speak is to connect three dissimilar topics (person, place & thing) into a coherent, logical and entertaining speech. Remind students that in order to speak coherently and fluidly for 3 – 5 minutes they will need to elaborate on the topics and think quickly on their feet. The grade and ability level will determine how long the students will have to speak on each individual topic. Typically, each topic is handed to the student between 45 seconds to 90 seconds. If handing the topic to the student mid speech is too much of a distraction, having the student pre-selecting the three topics and laying them face down is an alternative. Rotate through class.

Example for topics

To provide each student the opportunity to speak uninterrupted. To provide an opportunity for students to share ideas.

·         Students sit in a circle so that everyone can see each other.

·         A topic (very easy to invite maximum participation) would be introduced.

·         Students will be instructed they can against as well as for the topic.

·         The duration of the discussion will be 30 seconds X number of speakers.

·         An object (like a book/ball/duster) is handed over to anyone in the circle.

·         It is passed around the group in a continuous direction. Everybody has to speak when the object reaches their hand.

·         At the end when the time elapses, the one who receives the object last concludes all the statements.

Activity (8) – Endless Fable

Description : Students will listen to the portion of an impromptu speech of a classmate and be able to add to the speech in a logical manner. The aim of Endless Fable is to create one continuous speech within the group despite the many

·          Students will develop their listening skills.

·         Students will be able to logically follow an argument.

·         Students will be able to fluidly continue someone else’s topic and argument.

·          Students will speak with confidence and ease.

Divide the class into small groups of 3 students each, sitting in a circle.

Teacher starts the story, there was a boy who was lonely in a village, Teachers asks the group to take over and the chain would start. The next speaker MUST build on the previous student’s story in the group and continue developing it and so on and so on. The students are to behave as if one speaker is delivering the story.

For a teacher possible initiations could be

·         A Lion named George lived in the jungles of Africa with his two sons

·         In ancient times, a princess was born without the power to speak

·         There lived a fat king in the state of Chaattisgarh in ancient times

·         Ram had a friend called Shyam, both of them were very good friends

·         A sailor called Aryan once decided to take a voyage around the world

·         God decided to enter the modern India one day and ask his wife to accompany him

·         Shreya is a very hard working student, but there are difficulties in her life

·         In a jungle there lived two friends Elephant Eelu and the monkey Manku

Activity (9) –Learning to DEBATE

Three-Card strategy –  

This strategy provides opportunities for all students to participate in discussions that might otherwise be monopolized by students who are frequent participators. In this strategy, the teacher provides each student with two or three cards on which are printed the words “Comment or Question.”

·         A topic will be introduced to the class.

·         Two students / Two teachers will read a written speech one FOR and one AGAINST the topic.

·         Now the debatable question is put up for full classroom

·          When a student wishes to make a point as part of the discussion, he or she raises one of the cards; after making a comment or asking a question pertinent to the discussion, the student turns in the card.

·          When a student has used all the cards, he or she cannot participate again in the discussion until all students have used all their cards.

This strategy encourages participants to think before jumping in; those who are usually frequent participants in classroom discussions must weigh whether the point they wish to make is valuable enough to turn in a card.

Tag Team Debate Strategy

This strategy can be used to help students learn about a topic before a debate, but it is probably better used when opening up discussion after a formal debate.

·         In a tag team debate, each team of five members represents one side of a debatable question.

·         Each team has a set amount of time (say, 5 minutes) to present its point of view.

·         When it’s time for the team to state its point of view, one speaker from the team takes the floor. That speaker can speak for no more than 1 minute, and must “tag” another member of the team to pick up the argument before his or her minute is up.

·         Team members who are eager to pick up a point or add to the team’s argument, can put out a hand to be tagged. That way, the current speaker knows who might be ready to pick up the team’s argument.

·         No member of the team can be tagged twice until all members have been tagged once.

Focused Group Discussion

The class is given a page with some information before the start of the topic, possibly containing an account of a certain phenomenon/ happening/Personality etc.

The debatable question/policy is not introduced prior to that time.

Teacher pose the question and then have students spend time gathering information about the issue’s affirmative arguments (no negative arguments allowed) and the same amount of time on the negative arguments (no affirmative arguments allowed).

Teachers open the discussion and moderate the flow of the group at the same time.

Lincoln Douglas Debate Format

Affirmative constructive (4 minutes) can be completely written and learned in advance!  

Introduction

·         Greet – state your name, that you are speaking for the affirmative; express pleasure for the opportunity.

·         State the resolution.

·         Define key terms.

·         Describe the issue, using a combination of logos, ethos, and pathos.

·         Establish validity of the resolution – this is your thesis statement!

·         Demonstrate significance – qualitative/quantitative importance.

·         Itemize your contentions and present (some of) your evidence

·         Summarize your position.  Say “Thank you.  Now I stand for questioning”

                                               

Negative Cross-examination of Affirmative (2 minutes)

·         Negative will ask questions in an effort to clarify or pin down the Affirmative’s position.

·         Ask short questions to confirm damaging facts and elicit damaging admissions; you are looking for yes/no answers, not giving your opponent more time to build his/her case.

·         Never ask a question if you do not already know the answer.  Never attack a point that is unassailable.

·         If you hit a telling point, quietly go on and wait to hammer it home during your closing rebuttal.

Negative constructive (4 minutes)

·         Greet – state your name, that you are speaking for the negative; express pleasure for the opportunity to debate the topic of __________.

·         Correct definitions presented by affirmative and propose new ones, if necessary.

·         Add to affirmative’s description of the issue, using logos, ethos, and pathos to support the negative.

·         Preview your case with your thesis statement (“I intend to prove that  . . .).

·         State negative’s position and philosophy – why the resolution is a problem.

·         Support your position by itemizing your inferences, using evidence, expert testimony, and reasoning.

·         Refute affirmative’s points with evidence and reasoning

·         Summarize the negative case so far. Say “Thank you.  Now I stand for questioning”

Affirmative Cross-examination of Negative (2 minutes)

·         The Affirmative has the opportunity to ask questions of the Negative in an effort to clarify or pin down the Negative’s position.  This is also the time to get Negative to agree to points Affirmative made!

·         Ask short questions to confirm damaging information; don’t allow your opponent time to build her case.

Affirmative Rebuttal (2 minutes)

·         Refute points made by the Negative and restate own case.

·         Point out any arguments the Negative dropped.

Negative Rebuttal (4 minutes)

·         Negative will attack all of Affirmative’s points and review own case.

·         Point out any arguments the Affirmative dropped.

·         Be dramatic in your big picture.  Make your audience side with your position against the resolution.

·         Thank the audience and judge(s) for this opportunity, their time and effort.

Second Affirmative Rebuttal (2 minutes) – last speech!

·         Sum up the debate, hopefully to the advantage of the Affirmative.

·         Be dramatic in your big picture.  End with a strong appeal to accept the resolution.

·         Thank the audience and the judge(s) for this opportunity, their time and effort.

There are no free lunches in the world. Just because you studied here doesn’t mean you are entitled to all the opportunities. You must remember to work hard and earn every opportunity you want. Take every challenge you face as an opportunity for another chance to prove your worth. Also, know the difference between people to whom you have to prove yourself and those you don’t have to. Always remember to have a sense of humour in life. Only that will get you through the tough times. Life is truly special and with patience and hard work, you will certainly make responsible decisions for yourself, your family and for your country as well.  Take accountability for your failures and learn from them. Don’t let anything bring you down. Stay as passionate and driven as you are today. Keep achieving and reach great heights with flying colours.

ENGLISH LITERARY CLUB INAUGURATION 2022-23

The inauguration of the English Literary Club was held on 18.4.2022 in our Vidyalaya. The session began with the prayer song and was followed by the welcome address. The President of the club Miss Radha Lasan, the Secretary Miss Sharalee and the Treasurer Mr. Bhuvaneshwaran lighted the kuthuvizhakku. The children of std II entertained the audience by singing a rhyme. Gurucharan of std III narrated a story. Students of std IV and V mesmerised all with their scintillating musical performance. A role-play by std VI students and a mime with a social message “Avoid Mobile Phones” by std VII students were thought provoking. A Shakespearean play ‘The Tempest’ was enacted by the students of std VIII and IX. Literary pageant and the soliloquy were a treat. The students of std X debated about the need to speak in English and finally “kill them with kindness” song was sung by our choir. The function ended with the vote of thanks and National Anthem.

The Literary Club of EFL, College of Science and Humanities (S & H) was inaugurated on 27/07/2021. The function was convened by Dr. V.Rema ,Prof. and Head, Department of EFL. The programme was coordinated by Dr.T.Sri Devi, Assistant Professor (Sr. G). Nearly 150 students from various departments attended the program.

The Principal Dr.C. Sundar presided over the function and presented the Inaugural address. Prof. Manu Mangattu, a poet , author and a film-critic was the chief guest of the programme.  He presented the office bearers to the gathering and inducted them. The inaugural oath was taken by the Student President. The Vice Principal (Academic), Dr.N.Asokan and Vice Principal (Admin), Dr.J.Dhilipan offered their felicitations, In his Special address, the  Chief Guest gave ideas to the students how to bring out their artistic talents by participating events in the Literary Club. He advised the students to read a lot to improve their communication skills. The Student Secretary proposed the vote of thanks.
