I love that the university is so diverse, so there are students from different places all around the would, which makes it interesting to make new friends. There are study courses mostly in English so it doesn’t matter if you know proper German, that’s an advantage too.

I had the privilege of studying at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, pursuing my Master’s in Sustainable Development Management, and my experience there was nothing short of exceptional. Rhine-Waal is a modern and dynamic institution located in a picturesque region of Germany, offering a range of programs that cater to diverse academic interests. Here are some highlights from my time at the university:

Diverse Academic Programs: Rhine-Waal University offers a wide variety of programs, and I can personally vouch for the excellence of the Master’s in Sustainable Development Management. The program was not only comprehensive but also incredibly engaging.

Practical Projects and Insightful Discussions: One of the standout features of the Sustainable Development Management program was the emphasis on practical projects and insightful discussions. These real-world applications of sustainability principles made the learning experience tangible and relevant.

Exceptional Courses and Professors: I was particularly impressed with the quality of the courses and professors in my program. The professors were not only experts in their fields but also genuinely passionate about sustainability.

Small Group Dynamics: Despite the online learning environment that I started in during the COVID-19 pandemic, the small group size in my program fostered a close-knit community. This allowed for meaningful interactions with professors and fellow students, making it easier to collaborate and exchange ideas.

Engaging Professors: The professors at Rhine-Waal are incredibly engaging and supportive. They went above and beyond to ensure that the online learning experience was as enriching as possible.

International Atmosphere: Rhine-Waal’s international atmosphere was a significant advantage. Despite the challenges of starting during the pandemic, I connected with my fellow students from around the world. This global perspective added depth to our discussions and broadened my horizons.

Career-Oriented Focus: Rhine-Waal University’s commitment to preparing students for their careers was evident throughout my studies. The practical projects and internship opportunities provided valuable real-world experience.

Beautiful Location: The campus’s location along the Rhine River is simply stunning. It provides a serene and inspiring environment for both study and leisure.

While my experience at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences was positive, it’s essential to do your research and consider your specific program and personal preferences when choosing a university.

In conclusion, Rhine-Waal University offers an excellent academic experience in a diverse and supportive environment. For those considering the Master’s in Sustainable Development Management, I can personally attest to its quality and relevance. It’s a place where you can learn, grow, and prepare for a successful future while contributing to a more sustainable world.

The university has a great location, beautiful modern campus and the Life Sciences faculty has a cozy, very international but also familiar feel. A lot of interesting projects are being started here, like the StartGlocal Startup coaching. After corona, the teaching did include some nice labs and practical excursions. However, that being said, I was disappointed by the lack of in depth discussion about actual sustainability, the sometimes middle-school level teaching quality and the poor organisation of the young university. Some students also complain of unfair grading and power hungry professors and I have sadly also seen evidence of this. I can only hope that HSRW will find a way to grow past these starting troubles and focus on quality, not quantity.

In general, the University is a well structured International learning environment and easy integration with other fellow International students. Also for my program which is offered in the Kleve, NRW campus, to a large extent, the curriculum is really well structured and I find most of the courses related to my chosen career path.

What I really find displeasure about the University is the criterias that are put in place at every point of the academic semesters, e.g., preparatory internship clause for a student to be able to continue his or her schooling from 4th semester or gets locked out of the student portal after 3rd semester if not able to proof the necessary requirements for this internship. Also, minimum ECTS for 4th and 5th semester exams. In my own opinion, all these are too mentally disturbing for students such, many fall into depression and all unconsciously because of too many clauses waiting them.

In conclusion, I will surely recommend this University to a friend.

I liked that the university was located in a small village called kleve which bordered a Netherlands city called Nijmegen. It gave us the leisure as students to always travel at weekends or during semester breaks to the Netherlands freely and also our student bus ticket covered the trip free of charge.

Most students did not like the village kleve. The university need to create more games or activities to accommodate we the international students from various countries. I lived in the village kleve where the university is located till I graduated, I always felt lonely, especially due to the fact that it is a dead city on weekdays/weekends for students. There was no pub or nightclubs or bars to help we students relax after a hectic lecture week. most students got depressed and had to go back home, or change schools.

Extensions of the thesis writing time can be granted in individual cases: bachelor's theses can be extended by a maximum of four weeks and master's theses by a maximum of six weeks. You must submit a justified application to the relevant examination board, which will decide on the matter in consultation with your examiners. Please note that a temporary illness is not considered a valid reason for extending the writing time.

An exception to this rule is the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering courses of study. There, extensions of two weeks can be granted informally without students giving reasons to the staff at the ZPA. Please contact your responsible administrator .

Students with a chronic illness or a disability can, however, be granted an extension of the writing time as a “Nachteilsausgleich” (alternative study arrangements) .

As soon as we have received the relevant decision from your examination board, we will enter the new submission date in RWTHonline. You can see it under the "My achievements" tab.

Changing the Title

If you would like to change the title of your thesis after you have registered it, you usually need the approval of the examination board. Please contact your responsible contact person there as early as possible.

In some degree programs, however, the title on the cover sheet of the submitted work may differ from the registered title. Therefore, please find out as early as possible what the regulations are in your course of study.

As soon as we have received the decision from your examination board, we will enter the new title in RWTHonline, which you can see via the "My Achievements" tab.

Please note: If we notice after submission that the title on your cover sheet differs from the one indicated on your registration form, we cannot forward your thesis to the examiners. In this case, you will have to either submit a new cover sheet with the original title or contact your examination board with a request for a change of title. Until we receive the corresponding decision, your thesis will remain with us at the ZPA.

Submitting your thesis/dissertation.

Submission of the final thesis/dissertation must be within 60 days of the final exam. Students who miss the 60 day submission deadline are ineligible to register in future terms.

The Graduate School uses ProQuest to administer the electronic thesis/dissertation (ETD) submission and committee approval process that results in publication in ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (PQDT) database and Cornell’s Library Repository, eCommons. Before initiating the electronic process, students are required to complete the Survey of Earned Doctorates (for doctoral students only). A SED Certification of Completion is provided to the student when the survey has been completed. Once the survey is completed, the final ETD can then be submitted to the Graduate School using the ProQuest system. The SED Certification of Completion is required for submission to ProQuest.

ProQuest Submission Steps

In order to complete the submission process, you will need to have the following:

  • A single PDF file of your thesis or dissertation
  • Your abstract
  • Supplemental material
  • SED Certification of Completion

Step 1: Begin Submission Process

Master’s students go to  Cornell Master’s ProQuest site, doctoral students go to  Cornell Doctoral ProQuest site. Click on the “sign up and get started today” button and follow instructions to begin the submission process.

Submission Process: Submission steps are outlined on the left menu. You will see the items checked off as you progress through the submission steps. You must click “Save & Continue” at the bottom of each page, even pages on which you do not enter any information. Using the left menu, you can return to any page and make changes until the point of final submission.

Step 2: Publishing Options

Traditional Publishing:  “Traditional Publishing” is automatically selected and is included in the Cornell Thesis and Dissertation filing fees.

Delayed Release:  ProQuest provides six months, and one and two year embargoes. The Graduate School recommends you discuss the publishing options with your advisor. If your advisor is unavailable or has no opinion, the conservative approach is to choose a two-year embargo.

Step 3: Read and Agree to ProQuest and University Distribution License

Both ProQuest and Cornell University distribution licenses will be presented for your acceptance.

Step 4: Enter Thesis/Dissertation Information

In addition to the mandatory information, such as title and abstract, you will have the opportunity to select up to three categories (subject areas) and six key words that describe your ETD. This information will make it easier for others to find your work when searching the web.

Step 5: Upload PDF and Supplemental Files

Upload PDF: Whether you use the PDF conversion tool provided by ProQuest or you convert your document to PDF yourself, review your PDF to ensure your formatting remains as you intended after conversion.

Supplementary Materials: If supplementary materials – such as audio, video, and spreadsheets – are an integral part of your ETD, you can submit them as supplementary files during the online submission process.

Step 6: Upload Required Documents

The SED Certification of Completion if you are a Ph.D. candidate is required for submission to ProQuest.

Step 7: Register for Copyright

You can complete this process through ProQuest for a fee, or you complete the process independently through the U.S. Copyright Office.

Step 8: Order Copies

If you would like to purchase additional copies of your thesis/dissertation for yourself, your field, or your committee members, you may order bound copies through ProQuest (Order Copies page). The required bound archival copy for the library is automatically ordered for you and included in the Cornell thesis and dissertation filing fees.

Select the “Decline – do not order” option if you don’t wish to order additional copies.

Bound copies can also be ordered through Cornell Print Services .

Step 9: Review and Submit

Once the thesis editor has reviewed the formatting of your thesis/dissertation, you will receive an email to let you know whether any corrections are required. You will then have five days to make the changes and upload the revised PDF. You will not be certified for graduation until the formatting of your ETD has been fully approved by the Graduate School. You will receive a confirmation email of final acceptance.

Step 10: Submitting Revised PDF (if needed)

You will receive an email describing the formatting changes needed with instructions and a link for resubmission.

The most popular question from clients and people on the forums is how not to get caught up in the fact that you bought an essay, and did not write it yourself. Recommendations and requirements for writing a master thesis

Based on the recommendations given by Prof. Greveler

Before I agree to supervise a thesis, you are asked to provide a proposal consisting of the following contents:

  • formulation of the research question or problem to be solved
  • elaborate discussion of relevance of the problem / research question in combination with
  • a thorough presentation of related work and existing solutions in scientific literature
  • definition of functional and quality criteria for the solution
  • course of the work
  • intended result
  • structure of the thesis down to the second level (table of contents)
  • milestone plan including dates

If you plan to write your thesis at a company, the proposal shall be discussed with your supervisor at the company first and then sent to me. Otherwise, the proposal shall be sent to me directly. After receiving the finalized proposal a face-to-face meeting is appropriate.

Thesis types

There are four general types of master thesis. Any single thesis will most probably not fit exactly into one category and will be a blend of different types (Based on on the excellent “Recommendations for thesis writing at the Institute of Computer Science, University of Tartu”).

1. Solution of an Application Development Task

The thesis is written around a software or system architecture solution for a goal defined beforehand. The architecture of the solution must be described. An important component of such thesis is the presentation of related work (conference papers, journal articles) and the analysis of the obtained results. In particular the thesis shall address whether there any other similar implementations and what the benefit of the result by the author is compared to previous solutions. Decisions on architecture, technologies and quality assurance methods shall be documented.

2. Theoretical Study

A thesis of this kind presents a rather formal description of a problem, system requirement, protocol etc. in a selected field with a strict, formally reasoned solution to it. The theoretical work can be either an independent research result performed by the student or might compile results obtained in scientific literature (conference papers, journal articles).

3. Independent Study

Assessment criteria for an independent study are the same as for a theoretical study, but certain requirements may be relaxed due to the actuality of the research. The result of the work may be a formal description of a protocol or system or any other formal description of theoretical results.

4. Review-type study

Theoretical study can be a review of known results if the treated materials together with used formalizations can be synthesized into a systematic approach that can be later used for educational purposes or as a lab demonstrator. The work shall include innovative features that have not appeared in any previous work. The thesis author shall demonstrate their understanding and proficiency in the chosen subject.
