Many students earn course credits by having their mentor assign books to read on the course topic, and writing papers or completing projects that demonstrate their understanding of the assigned material. Credits can also be obtained by attending conferences, workshops, retreats, or online courses from established academic institutions.  Students may request and submit for IUPS approval (through their mentors), permission to earn credits through external programs.  Students also have the opportunity to assist in designing their own electives, allowing for education customization.

A key criteria for earning credits is for students to demonstrate how learning this subject matter impacts their lives personally and professionally. Integration of course material is of paramount importance at IUPS.

Professional Coaching & Human Development Course Descriptions

(Please note: All Doctoral coursework (600 courses) involve more advanced research and in-depth study.)

REQUIRED CORE COURSES

PCH 500/600   The Essential Foundation of Coaching This comprehensive and foundational course covers a wide range of competencies and best practices in coaching methods and models.   PCH 501/601   Theories of Counseling This course introduces students to the underlying theories of counseling for the purpose of deepening a coach's capacity to work with clients. The bulk of the course focuses on the acquisition of basic helping skills necessary for working with clients, such as: basic response skills, relationship-building, empathic listening, and sensitivity.   PCH 502/602   Human Development & Personality Theory The processes and significant transition points in child, adolescent, and adult development are considered in this course and can be of immeasurable assistance  when coaching clients. This course also examines various theories and research focusing on intrinsic motivation, emotions, locus of control, pro-social behavior, self-concept, and personality change.   PCH 507/607   The Spiritual Dimension of Coaching This course offers an experiential exploration into the positive impact of letting go of the limiting, suffering and fear-based state of being completely identified with the mind, and what lies beyond that contracted state. Students are guided toward the opportunity of having a direct experience of being truly present — in the Now, and how being present can transform one’s experience of life. In addition, the course addresses the essentials of self-inquiry, covering the teachings of some of today’s finest consciousness teachers, including Eckhart Tolle, Byron Katie and more.   PCH 508/608   Awareness of Cross-Cultural Issues This course acquaints students with the importance of taking into account and respecting the individual client's cultural experience. Topics covered include the psychological implications of being a member of a minority group, questions about the universality of the human experience, and implications of a multi-cultural society, and the phases of acculturation clients may be experiencing.   PCH 509/609   Psychopathology Exploring the paradigms of mental and emotional dysfunction is the focus of this course. The emphasis is on the evaluation of psychological disturbances, using case studies to examine different disorders for the purpose of knowing why and when to refer certain clients to qualified mental health practitioners.   PCH 570/670   Legal and Ethical Issues in Coaching All coaches face risks. Those who face the greatest risks are those who are the least informed and educated. This course will provide: (1) an understanding of ethics as defined by a variety of codes applicable to coaches, including a focus on the ICF Code of Ethics; (2) an overview of the legal issues of which coaches should be aware; and (3) information about risk management techniques.   PCH 675   Research Methods in Coaching This course assists students in preparing for their dissertation project by examining research methods that can be employed.   PCH 580/680   Practicum/ Fieldwork Students are required to do case presentations based on their experience in coaching clients (professionally or under supervision), effectively demonstrating the core competencies of coaching.   PCH 590/690   Thesis/ Dissertation Research Project Students are required to produce original experimental or heuristic research, or a work of excellence project, of publishable quality.

ELECTIVE COURSES

Elective courses may be recommended by the university to ensure the student receives a well-rounded education and students are encouraged to take electives that focus on their core areas of educational interest. Alternative electives to the courses below may be designed by students and submitted to their mentor and the university for approval, truly giving students to opportunity to customize their education. In addition, with prior university approval, students can receive course credits for certain relevant workshops and conferences attended.     PCH 612   Advanced Personality Theory This course offers students an opportunity to explore at a deeper level, the work of personality theorists of their choosing (Freud, Jung, Adler, Fromm, Skinner, Maslow, Rogers, Frankl and May, etc.)   PCH 614   Alignment and Embodiment of Values and Ethics Studies the cognitive, social, behavioral, and corporate processes affecting individual, group, and organizational judgments in morally questionable situations. Through analysis, students understand what factors give rise to and influence ethical issues and how organizational values precipitate ethical behavior.   PCH 615   Body-Centered Psychotherapy This course covers Body Centered Psychotherapy, which deals with information stored in the body in the form of images, memories and emotions. Blocked feelings get stuck in the physical body and block a person's energy flow. Held-in or stuck emotions not only cause emotional suffering, but physical pain, glandular imbalances, tension and often disease.   PCH 616   Clinical Neuropsychology This course focuses on major neurological syndromes with an emphasis on differential diagnosis. Common or significant neurological conditions are presented to allow recognition of psychological manifestations of neurological diseases. Other topics include the neurological examination, various syndromes and disorders, and neuropharmacology.   PCH 617   Coaching the Mid-life Transition This course is designed for both experienced and relatively new coaches who are either working with mid-life clients in career coaching or on other goals.  It will serve as a workshop where we inquire into midlife and soul-coaching as they occur, particularly during the ages of 35-65.     PCH 619   Coaching With The Enneagram The Enneagram is a century-old tool used in the spiritual direction tradition that has been newly rediscovered and applied to spiritual and personal development.  Learn how to use it for your own development as a coach as well as how to use it with your clients.  Discussion, self-assessment, case practice included.     PCH 620   Communication & Team Building This course examines major theories and approaches to building effective work teams, and their application to current management theory and practice. Students explore the role and effectiveness of work teams in today’s organizational culture and communication climate.   PCH 621   Community Psychology This course covers principles of psychology applied to real-life, community issues. Methodologies and techniques are explored, with emphasis upon the transpersonal approach. Review and understanding of actual programs addressing a variety of community issues such as youth violence, traffic safety, and productivity in the workplace are covered.   PCH 622   Conflict Resolution Explores the skills and techniques necessary for conflict mediation. Students study communication techniques, problem identification and disagreement management skills, techniques for achieving agreement or settlement, and intake skills.   PCH 623   Conscious Relationships This experiential course teaches how to coach couples in creating a conscious loving relationship — a powerful and meaningful way to significantly improve health, love-life and overall well-being. Learn how to assist two people couples to consciously agree to relate on a "higher" level, while utilizing clear communication methods.   PCH 624  Consulting Skills This course explores the nature of consulting as a learning and helping process between an individual and a group, focusing on the interpersonal skills and processes that make up the helping process. Using classic works from Peter Block, Ronald & Gordon Lippitt, and Edgar Schein, this course is designed for anyone who does consulting, even though they may not call themselves a consultant.   PCH 625   Cross-Cultural Coaching This is an advanced course designed for participants who have already completed the basics of coach training.  In this course, participants learn to recognize differences among cultures, cultural assumptions of coaching, the coach’s own cultural background, and how these factors impact cross cultural coaching.  Practicalities, resources, and creating a global coaching practice will also be covered. Classes take place weekly for 1 hour, over 4 consecutive weeks.

PCH 626   Death and Dying – Grief and Loss This course explores students’ own relationships to death, grief, and loss. Presents issues and techniques for counseling and care of self as counselor.

PCH 627   Eco-Psychology This course explores the consequences of the split between person and planet and how healing this split may take place.   PCH 628   EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) Certification This course provides credit for students who successfully complete both parts 1 & 2 of the EMDR basic training program. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a complex approach to psychotherapy that integrates many of the successful elements of a range of therapeutic approaches in combination with eye movements or other forms of rhythmical stimulation in ways that stimulate the brain’s information processing system.   PCH 633   Family and Marital Therapy The family is the central building block of modern life although its nature and form are continually changing. One of the primary tasks of human services is to help families adapt to these changes. This course explores the nature of families and human systems and some of the approaches to therapeutic change within them. The theoretical works of Bateson, Satir, Haley, Hoffman, Minuchin, and Nagy are highlighted. The goal of the course is to offer a framework for thinking about families and understanding the nature of family processes.   PCH 634   Family Business Coaching This course is designed to serve the needs of coaches who want to apply their coaching skills to coaching the family business.  While an understanding of basic issues in the family business will be useful to participants, they will not be necessary for someone who joins this course.   PCH 635   Gestalt Therapy This course explores Gestalt therapy, a holistic therapy with a great spiritual foundation based, in part, on teachings from Buddhism and Taoism. The basic experiment of Gestalt therapy, attending to our awareness moment by moment, is rooted in Buddhist mindfulness. In neither Gestalt therapy nor Buddhist meditation is awareness considered merely a mental activity; rather it is a complete creative experience in the present that can include a focus on feeling the actual, coming to our senses, listening to our bodies and attending to our breathing.   PCH 636   Human Sexuality Counseling This course on human sexuality presents an investigation of sexuality within the larger context of the human experience. Emphasis is placed on the study of human sexual development, dimensions of sexual behavior, sex education, pleasure, health issues, sex therapy, ethical and legal aspects of sexuality, and art & sexuality.   PCH 637   Hypnotherapy Certification This course provides credit for students who successfully complete a hypnosis certification training program approved by the university.

PCH 638   Introduction To Adult Developmental Coaching This course will focus on the changing reality that adults face and explore the developmental challenges that traditionally appear in each decade of life from the 20s to 100 and beyond.  Learn how the developmental spiral helps explain the fact that so many challenges seem to appear time and time again.  Discover how coaching can help adults successfully navigate through their challenges while creating a life of excitement, fulfillment and joy.

PCH 639   Introduction To Coaching the Entrepreneur and the Small Business This course is designed for new and experienced coaches who want to achieve success and mastery in the skills and strategies required for successfully coaching the entrepreneur and the small business.  The training may include teleconferencing calls,  practice on case examples from participants; practices, written exercises,  and role plays.   PCH 640   Introduction To Executive Coaching and Development Learn the basics of executive coaching and development:  kinds of coaching you can do, special issues facing executives and their coaches, how performance coaching and executive development differ, how assessments and data gathering support the efforts, contracting with clients, etc.  This course will discuss practical issues and use outside readings as well as case studies and assigned practice to boost your skill as an executive coach.    PCH 642   Introduction To Transpersonal Coaching This course will explore ancient traditions within a contemporary context and discover truths that have transcended time. A variety of techniques that you can use to extend your own spirit-filled journey and use with your clients will also be taught.  Explore ancient wisdoms where East meets West, the past meets the present and in so doing we travel to wholeness.

PCH 643   Intuition in Business This experiential course teaches students how to apply their intuitive abilities specifically to business issues, whether in large corporations, small businesses, or sole proprietorships. Students explore the application of intuition to organizational mission, personnel matters, staff training and development, new product development, mergers, downsizing and bankruptcy, and other areas of business making.   PCH 645   Organizational Psychology Explores the theory and practice of industrial and organizational psychology. You will examine the dynamics of organizational life and develop an understanding of the individual, interpersonal and group behaviors in work settings. Methods of assessment and intervention will be covered.   PCH 646   Strategies for Transformation This course will review strategies that allow for transformation and covers exercises on designing a life, the six cognitive stages of change, the prerequisites for transformation, and spiritual aspects of transformation — all integrated for a deep understanding of the transformation process. PCH 647   Stress Management  Principles for working with the physiological basis of stress by heightening kinesthetic awareness of the stress response and utilizing focused intentionality, imagery, and non-habitual movement to reduce physical tension are covered in this course. This is an experientially-based learning experience, integrating the approaches of Moshe Feldenkrais and F.M. Alexander with transactional analysis, Gestalt therapy and Ericksonian hypnosis.   PCH 750   Workshops / Retreats / Conferences 1 - 15 Workshops and retreats are held on varying topics in desirable locations such as Maui and San Diego. Students are notified of upcoming opportunities. Students are also encouraged to attend workshops, retreats and conferences relevant to their coursework. With prior approval and subsequent papers written on that which is gained from such events, students can receive credit.

2.29 Seven mistakes academics make and how to avoid them

Everyone makes mistakes. It's inevitable that we're going to make mistakes. But one of the most important things is to be able to recognize what mistakes we're making, figure out why we're making them, and if appropriate, move away from that pattern of mistake. So in today's episode, I'm going to be telling you seven mistakes that I see lots of PhD students and academics making that I want you to check that you're not making too. Some of them are relevant to everybody. Some of them are a little more focused on people who are balancing teaching and research and all of those things as well. They are all things I want you to check that you're not doing. **** I'm Dr Vikki Wright, ex-Professor and certified life coach and I help everyone from PhD students to full Professors to get a bit less overwhelmed and thrive in academia. 2.28 How to stop comparing yourself

At every stage of the academic journey, people are comparing themselves to those around them and doing it in ways that just  doesn't help and where they end up feeling guilty, feeling frustrated, feeling hopeless.  Whether you're a first year PhD student looking at the rest of your cohort wondering if you're doing enough or whether you're some kick ass senior professor who's smashing their career, we're still looking across to other labs going, Oh, well, they, you know, they have still got more grant income than me. They still got more publications than me. It's so sad. And it doesn't have to be like that. So today we're going to be thinking about how to stop comparing yourself to others and what to do instead. **** I'm Dr Vikki Wright, ex-Professor and certified life coach and I help everyone from PhD students to full Professors to get a bit less overwhelmed and thrive in academia. She shares that she finds it stressful to even think about planning and is worried about how to manage the last couple of years of her research. I coach her as I would in a private coaching session and we reach some great insights about how Laura is already planning way more than she gives herself credit for and how she can keep developing her skills. 2.26 How to manage your energy

How many times have you seen or been on a time management course? How many books and podcasts and blogs and social media posts have you seen about time management?  I want you to compare that to how many times you've seen courses and support for energy management. So much less. It's so rare to see people discussing energy management compared to how often we see people talking about time management, and it just doesn't make sense because time passes. We can organize our tasks within time, but we can never manage time itself. It's the one commodity we have very little control over. But that's okay. Because actually time management is rarely the issue. Our issues are usually around energy management and focus management, yet there's much less support out there for this. So that's why I'm recording this podcast. **** I'm Dr Vikki Wright, ex-Professor and certified life coach and I help everyone from PhD students to full Professors to get a bit less overwhelmed and thrive in academia. My weekly podcast, The PhD Life Coach covers the most common issues experienced in universities, including procrastination, imposter syndrome, and having too much to do. I give inspiring and actionable advice and often have fun expert guests join me on the show. Make sure you subscribe on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. Find your perfect college degree

In this article, we will be covering...

The Doctorate in Coaching, unlike similar leadership degrees, is a relatively new degree program. Online programs for this doctorate are rare.

An online doctoral degree in coaching is designed for those who want to pursue high-level coaching skills and knowledge to provide executive coaching for professional and organizational success.

Graduates of these programs can work as executive coaches, consultants for leadership development, coach educators, researchers, organizational management experts, organizational leadership specialists, or consultants across various industries.

The Labor Statistics data says top business professional executives are expected to grow 3 percent from 2022 to 2032 ; this data, however, may not guarantee actual job growth and may not reflect local employment situations.

The study of coaching theories, practices, and research methods is the main focus of a doctorate in coaching, an advanced academic degree. A doctorate in coaching often entails a combination of core courses, research courses, and a doctoral dissertation or capstone project, though the particular structure and content may vary depending on the university offering the program.

Doctoral students often explore courses such as coaching theories and models, coaching psychology, leadership coaching, strategic leadership, human resource management, coaching ethics, research techniques, and data analysis.

Executive Coaching vs. Leadership Coaching

The coaching industry has two distinct but closely linked subfields: executive coaching and leadership coaching. While the two have similarities, they differ in many subtleties and areas of interest.

Here are critical points of their differences:

Targeted Audience

  • Senior-level executives, including CEOs, C-suite executives, and high-level managers, are the primary audience for executive coaching.
  • Individuals at different levels of leadership, such as mid-level managers, emerging leaders, and high-potential employees, might benefit from leadership coaching.
  • Enhancing leadership effectiveness, executive presence, strategic thinking, decision-making, and overall organizational performance are the main goals of executive coaching. It frequently entails addressing particular difficulties experienced by executives and assisting them in achieving their professional objectives.
  • Leadership coaching focuses on establishing leadership competencies at various organizational levels, developing leadership abilities, expanding self-awareness, and improving interpersonal dynamics and communication.
  • Executive coaching frequently occurs in the context of the executive’s position and duties inside the company. The coach may collaborate closely with the executive’s peers, direct reports, and stakeholders to encourage growth and development.
  • Individual leaders or entire leadership teams may receive coaching in leadership. It attempts to increase leadership skills and encourage collaboration to boost team dynamics and organizational performance.
  • The goal of executive coaching is to strengthen the leadership skills of senior executives to have a strategic organizational influence. It supports the executive’s capacity to lead and direct the organization successfully and is in line with the company’s strategic goals.
  • Leadership coaching can address various leadership difficulties, including team building, conflict resolution, change management, and increasing leadership presence.

Leadership coaching has a wider application and can target leaders at all organizational levels, unlike executive coaching, which is typically more confined to top-level executives and has a strategic focus on organizational impact.

The distinctions between executive and leadership coaching might change depending on how various coaching practitioners or organizations define and utilize these terminologies. The particular demands and circumstances of the clients and organizations engaged may also impact the focus and breadth of coaching engagements.

Coaching Certifications

Coaching certifications are credentials that attest to a coach’s proficiency in coaching. They demonstrate a coach’s formal education and dedication to moral principles. Numerous coaching organizations and organizations provide several reputable coaching credentials. Here are a few well-known coaching credentials:

International Coach Federation ( ICF ) Credentials

The organization called International Coach Federation (ICF) offers three levels of credentials:

  • Associate Certified Coach (ACC)
  • Professional Certified Coach (PCC)
  • Master Certified Coach (MCC)

European Mentoring and Coaching Council ( EMCC ) Credentials

Various levels of coaching credentials are available from the EMCC, including:

  • Foundation Level
  • Practitioner Level
  • Senior Practitioner Level
  • Master Practitioner Level
  • European Individual Accreditation (EIA)

Certified Professional Coach ( CPC )

The CPC certificate, provided by the Professional Coach Certification Board (PCCB), is intended to show a coach’s proficiency and adherence to professional standards.

Board Certified Coach ( BCC )

The BCC credential, managed by the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE), is intended for coaches specializing in executive, business, or personal coaching.

Certified Life Coach ( CLC )

Every coaching certification program has its requirements, which may include particular training hours, coaching experience, mentor coaching, and adherence to ethical standards. This is vital to keep in mind. The certifying bodies also have their own evaluation procedures and may ask applicants to pass tests, give references from previous clients, and submit coaching recordings for review.

Coaching vs. Consulting

Both consulting and coaching are professions that support people or organizations in reaching their objectives and raising performance. Although there may be some overlap, the two have different methodologies and different focuses.

  • Focus:  Coaching emphasizes professional or personal development, enabling people to develop their own answers. Problem-solving and offering knowledgeable counsel or solutions are the main goals of consulting.
  • Approach:  Coaching takes a client-centered, non-directive approach that prioritizes self-discovery. Consultations are expert-driven, directive processes that depend on the consultant’s knowledge.
  • Relationship:  Through coaching, the coach and client form a helpful, cooperative collaboration. A client-consultant relationship involves consulting when the consultant offers knowledge and solutions.
  • Outcome:  Coaching enhances the client’s abilities, self-awareness, and personal development. Delivering particular advice, approaches, or solutions to the client’s problems is the goal of consulting.

Beyond Anxiety  walks readers through simple, powerful exercises that can help you step out of this spiral and reduce anxiety immediately.

But that’s not the end of the story.

The opposite of anxiety, it turns out, is a wonderful new way of life—one that can calm and inspire us as individuals and help us become a source of healing for everything around us.

Available now for pre-order. On sale January 7, 2025.

About Dr. Amy Johnson

I share a groundbreaking new paradigm in mental health that has helped hundreds of thousands of people around the world tap into their natural, innate health and resilience so they can overcome issues like habits and anxiety easily, with no willpower.

phd life coach

I’m so glad you’re here.

I’m a coach, The Little School of Big Change teacher, social psychologist, and the author of a few books. I live in Michigan with my family and I love coffee, travel, documentaries, library books and a full night’s sleep.

I experienced severe anxiety, panic attacks, and binge eating/bulimia for several years. I was told by many well-trained, well-intentioned professionals that these issues would likely be with me for life in one form or another. They could become manageable; I could learn to cope—but they weren’t the kind of things people just “got over”.

Thankfully, nothing could be further from the truth today.

Several years ago I came across a down-to-earth spiritual understanding of life that changed everything for me. It is the basis of everything I teach and write about. It is the foundation for how I help people end their own unwanted habits and unnecessary worries.

Looking for something more official?

Amy Johnson, PhD is a psychologist, coach, author, and speaker who shares a groundbreaking new approach that helps people find lasting freedom from unwanted habits, anxiety, and self-doubt via insight rather than willpower.

She is the author of Being Human, The Little Book of Big Change: The No-Willpower Approach to Breaking Any Habit , and Just a Thought: A No-Willpower Approach to End Self-Doubt and Make Peace with Your Mind . In 2017 she opened The Little School of Big Change, an online school that has helped thousands of people find freedom from anxiety and habits and live a more peaceful life.

Amy also shares the no-willpower approach in her top-rated podcast, Changeable, and she’s trained over 70 coaches in her Change Coach Training Program. She has been a regularly featured expert on The Steve Harvey Show and Oprah.com, as well as in The Wall Street Journal and Self magazine.

REAL PEOPLE, REAL CHANGE

Samantha

My experience with The Little School of Big Change has been outstanding! The lessons are extremely well presented with so many helpful animations and other ways Amy helps participants get the points on a deeper level. It truly feels as if Amy is speaking directly and personally to me and thereby creates tremendous impact. I have benefited greatly and look forward to sharing these insights with my patients. I recommend LSBC to everyone without reservation!

William

Before The Little School of Big Change, my tendency was to worry about what others think of me. This caused me to be self conscious and not contribute when my input would have been worthwhile. I didn’t like “playing small”.

Since doing Amy’s work, I feel much more confident and really know my sense of well-being and self-worth. I know “who I am” and how the mind works, and I look forward to the unfolding of the future. I approach each day as a new moment and am excited to realize how much I now actually love myself and others. I finally feel and know I am “home”… within myself!

Amanda

Before Amy and The Little School of Big Change, I struggled with excessive worrying, overthinking, and being overly self-critical.

I love that there are no techniques, rules, or steps in Amy’s work. Just rediscovering that I am normal and healthy. I don’t take thoughts so seriously, AND it’s not up to me to change them. I don’t have a worry problem. I just have a busy mind like everyone on the planet, and that’s SO incredibly freeing!

Lisa

My anxiety was consuming my life. I couldn’t enjoy holidays as I would be worried about returning to work. Weekends were the same, I would start worrying from Saturday evening. My brain felt like it would explode with all the thoughts going on. During The Little School of Big Change, I began to understand that I needed to let my thoughts carry on but not take them seriously. I can’t stop them but I don’t need to act on them either. The course also gave me the freedom to do whatever I wanted in life. It doesn’t matter if I make mistakes or have bad days. I don’t have to dwell on them, I can just move on. It’s given me freedom and helped me to relax. I know I’m on the right track.

Pamela

I was anxious and worried about daily life. The pandemic made this much worse. I worried about my family members’ health excessively. I had OCD habits related to my anxiety.

I feel more calm and peaceful on a daily basis. The Little School of Big Change has helped me feel so much better about who I am as a person…I don’t feel shame or guilt about things that weren’t my fault to begin with.

Dido

“Before The Little School of Big Change, I struggled with eating disorders. All of them! They had run my life for more than 10 years and as a result, I lacked any peace in myself and any form of self esteem. I felt like I was always going to want to be someone else. Living felt too hard.

After coming across Amy, I instantly felt that there was something different, some possibility that life could be better. After feeling like I’d tried everything and spent years of my life trying to work out how to fix myself, there was hope. Then I joined The Little School of Big Change and gained so much from it, way more than just help with eating disorders. Slowly, I’ve left behind old habits and everyday I see more about beliefs, what is really going on, and how exciting life is!! It’s a complete change. Thank you Amy, for everything!

Lexi

For almost 40 years, my struggle with food was constant. I thought about food most of the time. I would eat until I was in pain, and this made no sense to me. I felt so helpless. This went on for years. I would regularly give up, and just give in. I was skeptical when I found Amy’s program, but I figured I had nothing to lose because nothing else was working anyway. Working with Dr. Amy and The Little School of Big Change has given me total freedom and relief. I no longer have obsessive thoughts about food or eating and I am no longer searching for “what is wrong with me”, or for a solution. I am super healthy, and at a weight I want to be. I feel 100% confident that it is permanent! I completed the program a couple of years ago, and have never had a relapse into my old way of being. Thank you Amy!

Dror

After having a complicated eye surgery, I found myself emotionally binge eating to distract myself through the healing. I was gaining a lot of weight and feeling miserable. A friend recommended The Little School of Big Change to me and it helped me drop habits I had been trying to break for years. In six weeks I saw what was behind my habits and got the understanding to change for good without major efforts.

Martin

“I had made the decision to reduce my level of alcohol consumption, mainly for health reasons, but found that I was not succeeding through willpower alone. I went online and discovered Amy’s website and The Little School of Big Change, offering not only freedom from unwanted habits, but also broader possibilities for personal change and growth.

Amy’s course helped me not only overcome the drinking issue, but also develop a deeper feeling of peace. Together with this increased relaxation, I now sense the potential for so much more to come. The process is far from complete, but I’m very happy to be on the journey.

Soren

“I have been sober for the last 6 years thanks to AA’s 12 step program which is amazing. But I was still looking for a manager for my inner problems or some other way to deal with them, and had not found a satisfactory solution.

The understanding Amy teaches in The Little School of Big Change has given me so many valuable insights. One of the biggest is that all my challenges stem from my own thoughts, that I actually do not have to deal with them at all, that they are harmless to feel and that they disappear by themselves when the thoughts disappear. I experience gratitude and compassion to a much greater degree since I have gained a better understanding of how we humans experience life.”

Colleen

“Before Amy and The Little School of Big Change, I struggled with excessive worrying, overthinking, and being overly self-critical.

I love that there are no techniques, rules, or steps in Amy’s work. Just rediscovering that I am normal and healthy. I don’t take thoughts so seriously, AND it’s not up to me to change them. I don’t have a worry problem. I just have a busy mind like everyone on the planet, and that’s SO incredibly freeing!”

Anita

“When I would get my feelings hurt or have a misunderstanding with someone (especially those closest to me) I would try to manage them by telling myself my feelings aren’t real, don’t matter or I shouldn’t feel that way. I would over think and try to make up scenarios of what

I should have said or done and how I can do it next time. Now when that happens, after going through The Little School of Big Change, I just sit with myself and feel the feeling I’m experiencing. Sometimes there is a big story with the feeling and I just listen knowing that it is only true in this moment so I don’t need to push it away or believe it as solid truth. I also know that any and all feelings are safe to experience, even the really hard ones like betrayal, grief, and abandonment. I no longer need to manage or control what’s going on. All I need to do is hold it in love, compassion and curiosity.”

Ellen

“I used to blame my husband for feeling sad. For example, if he came home from work in a bad mood, it felt like he transferred the same mood to me. After Amy and The Little School of Big Change, I realized that no one could put a feeling in me. Only my own thoughts could. Freedom!”

Cecilie

“Before finding Amy, I struggled with codependency and boundaries issues. After The Little School of Big Change, I stopped fixing people and started listening more to my wisdom. It’s so much easier to have boundaries without feeling guilty.”

Uma

“I had general worries, anxiety, and a heavy attachment to my fluctuating emotions. I placed a huge emphasis on my feelings and moods which created a lot of unnecessary day-to-day suffering.

Words don’t do justice to the kind of transformation I felt after finding Amy and The Little School of Big Change. I feel like I have the missing ingredient to true freedom and inner peace that everyone seems to be searching for. It’s not that you become immune to the human condition, but no matter what life throws at me, I’m in touch with a deeper knowing that I’m inherently well, peaceful, and resilient. It’s a permanent shift in how I view life and understand the human experience.”

Missy

“Before finding Amy, I struggled with anxiety and despair that manifested as chronic hives and facial swelling.

When I came to The Little School of Big Change, I felt a sense of desperation to end my anxiety and despair about my chronic hives and facial swelling. I had allowed my once-very-robust life to become very small. What I got from this understanding is more than I ever bargained for. I simply wanted relief, but what I got was freedom and causeless joy and peace. The transformation had nothing to do with learning how to get rid of what I hated; instead it had everything to do with discovering who I really am. I am forever grateful for the LSBC for helping me uncover what was in me all along.”

Rebecca

“I was extremely anxious about everything in life, in particular around my physical health, my job, and my ‘lack’ of physical & mental abilities to perform it, my potential lack of financial security, constant ruminating over a person who abandoned me during my cancer, and then Covid hit!

Through The Little School of Big Change, I was able to step back and see that ALL of my issues were solely due to my thoughts, and how the brain had created the chaos simply as a way to protect me. I had glimpses of my inner wisdom while going through cancer. Amy and The Little School of Big Change were able to help me see what that was, and that it was and is ALWAYS in me. What a relief!”

Allan

I had what I thought was a sort of free-floating anxiety. An on-off fear and insecurity of what seemed like everything. I would suddenly fly into rages and break things. Or I felt that I generally just lacked confidence in most things.

Since working with Amy and The Little School of Big Change, anger and frustration is more or less non-existent. The constant worry and fear of whether I can do something just isn’t there. Things just happen. Occasionally I get caught in thought. We all do, don’t we? It soon fizzles out though.

Jennifer

“I was crippled with anxiety and very scared, struggling to take care of my daughter and struggling to take care of myself. It was a very difficult time in my life.

After Amy’s support, I became overwhelmed with joy, peace, love and gratitude for her helping me find my way. She instilled such a strong knowing within me that everything is always okay no matter what, and that what I think and what crosses my mind is normal.”

Heather

“I had been searching to help me find peace and I think I owned every self help book there was at the time. Some things made sense to me…but never stuck, so I kept searching. I had repetitive negative thoughts.

I had heard about Amy’s work and thought that The Little School of Big Change might be able to help. And so it did. I got rid of all my self help books. I no longer feel the need to keep searching. My friends and family tell me I’m so much more confident and calm. The access to Amy was always available to ask questions and get quick answers, which I found the most valuable when I thought I was struggling with something.”

Tracey

“My struggle before finding Amy’s course was not being able to get over the death of my much loved sister. I continually had a “sad” feeling inside, despite it being almost 5 years since her death. When I felt happiness I would replace it with guilt or sadness – guilt because I was here experiencing life still and sadness that she was no longer here to share in life.

The Little School of Big Change helped me recognise that my life was my own, and my sister’s was hers. It was within my own thoughts that I was continually getting caught up, creating my own experience of continual sadness. Life is rising and falling all the time, and I now recognise that space within me which is my own essence and I engage with my life moment to moment now – seeing my thoughts but not necessarily ‘feeling’ them all the time. I have found gratitude for my own life experience.”

Rachel

“I had thirty eight years of psychiatric drugs and hideous amounts of money spent on therapies which did nothing. I lost my job as a teacher and have lived a limited life full of suffering.

Now that I’ve done Amy’s work in The Little School of Big Change, I have stopped searching for an external miracle cure or drug or person and know the answers lie within me alone. There is no more desperate searching for a holy grail that does not exist.”

Interviewee in this epic documentary film!

Produced by Scott Cervine and Andrew Graham. Premieres Spring 2023

In October of 2021, I told my story to a casting agent. In April 2022, I received THE phone call, congratulating me on being chosen to be 1 of 10 women sharing their story of triumph, after experiencing tremendous adversity. I am also in the cast, taking part in a narrative scene.

August 5th, 2022, I went to Hollywood to film my story. On August 24th, I returned to film a narrative scene. It was EXILERATING to be behind the scenes, and to witness firsthand the dedication and hard work that goes into creating a film like this. Truly a work of art!

I'm looking forward to the Red Carpet premiere Spring of 2023, but even more so, the IMPACT that this epic film will have on those who view it.

This film is based on the book, 'Think and Grow Rich' by Napolean Hill, written in 1937. It has sold over 200 MILLION copies world-wide!

Janny Chang, PhD

: Life and Career Change Coach

Expert Overview

Have you encountered a major life or career change recently that's rattled you? Have you recently been fired or laid off or you want to quit your job? Have you recently gone through a divorce or a relationship breakup or you want to separate from someone but you're not sure about your next steps? I can help you navigate any career, relationship, or life change with clarity, courage, and ease. I can also help you find resilience, purpose, and meaning in your life, even in the face of change.

If you're wanting to make a change in your life, I understand the resistance to making a decision and taking action. Our brains are wired to stay stagnant due to fear of failure and rejection.

We all have moments where we are at the crossroads and we have whispers telling us we should make a change, but we just wait and wait. It's painful to feel stuck. But know that it's totally normal to feel this way. You're human. I can help you learn to manage your mind so that you confidently make decisions to create the life you want.

If you've recently undergone a transition in your life and you're still in pain, I got you! I've been through many changes in my life and career and I understand the emotions that accompany change. I know that it can shake your identity and core sense of who you think you are. But I'm here to tell you that you can handle any change that comes your way after you learn the tools that I have to offer. You will get to a place of peace and inner joy and confidence that comes with learning to manage your mind, process your emotions, and paying attention to your body.

Schedule a free consult with me so that we can find out if we're a good fit for each other. Don't stay in limbo and don't wallow in self-pity after you've just gone through a major life transition. I'm not going to tell you you'll feel better overnight and I'm not going to tell you that you will feel good making a decision. Sometimes, the best decisions force us to grow and they're often times, uncomfortable and don't feel good at first.

I know how it feels. I've been at the crossroads many times and waited a long time to make a decision, whether it was a relationship that had run its course or a job that I should have left a long time ago. I reached a breaking point and it was not pretty. But I'm here to tell you that coaching and the tools that I will teach you saved my life and helped me navigate any change in my life, no matter how drastic it was. The tools I provide will transform your life, too.

Work with Me

My clients tend to be women who have spent a great deal of their lives people pleasing and following conventional rules. And they've about had enough. They want to break free, but they don't know how. They want to take that leap and make a change in their lives, but they're scared to do it. They just need a little nudge and belief in themselves. They also want to be free of the mental drama that's in their heads. The mental drama only gets worse when faced with major life or career changes. Maybe they've gotten laid or fired or passed over for promotion or maybe they went through a bad relationship breakup. My clients tend to be women who have overachieved their whole lives and an unexpected change shatters their sense of self worth and confidence. It's the stress, anxiety, low self-confidence, perfectionistic tendencies, and people pleasing that they want to be free from.

They know what they value deep down, and they know that they're ready to live life according to their own terms, not rules dictated by society. My clients just need a guide to help them uncover what they already know. They want to be proud of the life they create and they want to live according to their true values and their authentic selves. Even if it goes against societal conditioning, my clients are ready to jump all the way in, and not care what others think about them. They know that they've spent so much of their lives trying to please others and sacrificing their own desires for other people and they're ready for a change.

I also want to add that I don't judge my clients. Quite the opposite, I hold expansive space for them. That means you can tell me anything - any change that you want in your life and we can make it happen. We can do amazing things when we take risks. And I know how important it is to create a judgment-free and safe zone for all my clients.

How do you become a life coach? A 5-step plan to starting your own practice

Life coaching session with group of young participants

Ever feel like you could use the support of a coach as you bushwhack your way through day-to-day life? If so, you’re not alone—life coaches have grown increasingly popular in recent years, becoming a $4.56 billion global industry, according to data from the 2023 ICF Global Coaching Study . That’s a 60% increase in five years.

There are also more than 34,000 life coaches of varying types in North America. And that’s a part of what makes hiring a life coach attractive to many people: They can focus on a number of specialties and have broad appeal to many potential clients. “‘Life coach’ is a loose term,” says Bill Tierney , a self-described “results coach” in Spokane, Wash. “Life coach is a general category, and people identify in their own ways,” he adds.

UNC's Online Master of Public Health Program

There isn’t a single path to becoming a life coach, but there are some basic stepping stones that prospective life coaches can follow.

1. Consider why life coaching is attractive

A good first step to becoming a life coach is giving some serious thought as to why it’s an attractive path. This may require some introspection, thinking about what is making you feel unfulfilled in your current career track, and what elements of life coaching seem fun or exciting to you—or which of those elements you have a natural affinity for.

Some life coaches, for example, leaned into the fact that they enjoy working one-on-one with people who are struggling, and that’s what led them to become life coaches in the first place. Tierney says that he enjoyed working with people, something he found lacking in his previous career in the mortgage industry, which is what helped put him on track to become a life coach.

Similarly, Kate Bathras , a Maine-based life coach, says that she worked in higher education as an advisor, and later, in non-profits, and that the skills she built in those industries helped her realize that coaching was her calling. “Every job I ever had involved some element of coaching,” she says. “There was a point where I decided that I wanted to do it officially,” she adds, so she looked into becoming a life coach.

Here are some things to consider or keep in mind when deciding whether to become a life coach:

  • Personal interests: Coaching requires patience, empathy, and the ability to motivate. Think about whether you have those traits, or how you might be able to develop them.
  • Required investments: Becoming a coach will require time and money—think about whether you have the resources to devote to becoming a coach, and if you truly believe it’s worthwhile to you. The financial considerations are important especially if you plan on starting a private coaching practice after earning your certification.
  • A business plan: Again, give some thought to your post-certification steps. Many coaches open their own practices, which requires a range of business skills (marketing, accounting, and more). If you plan on going into business as a coach, you’ll need to start thinking about how you want to put that plan into action, find clients, and generate revenue.

2. Find a training or certification program

To become a certified life coach, you’ll need to find and enroll in a training program. But you should be discerning, as there are a lot of lower-tier training programs out there; The International Coaching Federation (ICF) has resources about the various accreditation types, and can be an invaluable resource for finding more information. It can also help connect you with training programs .

Tierney suggests doing some preparation on your own before choosing a program: ”Buy some coaching books,” he recommends, and “ignore the ‘certified life coach courses for $47” that you might see on social media. Bathras enrolled in a coaching program through iPEC (the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching), and recommends looking for one that “resonates with you.”

You’ll also want to think about the costs, and what you can afford. That includes both dollars and cents, and the time you have available to devote to studying and practicing.

One thing to note is that there aren’t typically prerequisites for coaching programs, though that may vary from program to program. Further, it’s also important to know that you don’t necessarily need to earn a certification to become a life coach. But if you truly hope to make a go of it as a practicing coaching professional, it’ll give you more credibility in the eyes of potential clients.

3. Train and work through the program

Given that each program is likely to be different, it’s difficult to say what, exactly, you should expect—both in terms of the curriculum, and the costs and time commitment involved.

With that in mind, generally, a coaching certification program will cover content related to fostering and building relationships with clients, any ethical guidelines or standards that you’ll need to know about, and strategies or techniques that coaches use.

Those techniques or strategies could be wide-ranging, but will likely include developing action plans with clients, and methods for asking helpful questions and creating actionable goals. Additionally, programs may also involve some element of business training—given that many coaches start practicing post-certification, the training can help them develop some foundational skills on which they can create their business.

As noted, costs and duration will vary as well. Bathras, for example, says her program took about a year to complete, and costs were into the five figures. For prospective coaches, those may serve as good ballpark figures as to what you should anticipate in terms of cost and time commitment.

Additionally, many programs also offer you the opportunity to work with a mentor coach to practice, which will help you get experience working with people as you prepare to eventually take on clients of your own. Tierney says that it can be helpful to start practicing with family members and friends to get the ball rolling.

4. Pass the certification exam

Next is a big step: pass the test.

The certification exam may have multiple elements or parts to it, and will probably incorporate both a written test and some in-person, real-time assessments. The ICF has details about what its specific exam entails , and the organization says that during 2023, 75% of the nearly 10,000 test-takers passed on their first attempt.

Exams will, most likely, make sure you know you’re competent as a coach, and test how you work with clients, whether you can create actionable plans and set goals with them, and listen to and respond to their needs. There will also probably be questions covering ethical guidelines, and portions that will test how well prospective coaches can manage their practices and client relationships. Again, the specifics may vary, but you should anticipate a written test and coaching assessment.

To prepare, experts say it’s best to review your material carefully, and do as much practice coaching as you can—that can involve engaging in coaching sessions with friends or family members, and working on fine-tuning your questioning and listening skills. Ask for feedback, too, to try and get a sense of where you may want to spend some time sharpening those skills.

It’s important to consider what your specific program’s focus is (and the tools it might work with), too, given that each certification program is a bit different. But assuming you pass and earn your credential, you’re off to the races as a life coach.

5. Start your practice

Once certified, you can start your life coaching practice. While some certified life coaches do work within organizations, many others start their own businesses, bringing on clients, and working with them directly.

This, naturally, is the most difficult thing to do, as life coaches are not only stepping into a new career and professional moniker, but also, in all likeilihood, starting a business from scratch. That’s not easy, especially for first-time entrepreneuers. As such, here is a rough outline of what that process may look like for a life coach:

  • Start your business: File paperwork with your state and other pertinent organizations (like the IRS) to launch a business entity, such as an LLC. Also think about business names, and see if you can secure social media handles with those names. Don’t forget to set up bank accounts for your business, too.
  • Find a space: Given that you’ll be working with clients one-on-one (unless you opt for an all-remote or digital business), you may need to find suitable office space that you think will work for a coaching business. It may be in a commercial building, or it may be in your home—the point is, give it some thought.
  • Put yourself out there: Launch a website outlining your services and prices, how clients can contact you, and with some information about who you are and why you’re doing what you do. This can also include launching social media pages, too.
  • Market, market, market: Both Bathras and Tierney say that it’s important to use social media to meet other coaches and prospective clients. It may feel like a time sink, but it should pay off. “Get your name out there, network—it’s challenging and takes time,” says Bathras. “But you grow your own capacity” as a coach as you become more experienced.

The takeaway

Life coaching is a versatile and broad category of coaching—life coaches work with people struggling with addiction, and even executives looking to take the next step in their career. As such, there are many ways and areas in which prospective life coaches can find a niche. But the first step is to consider whether it’s something you really want to pursue, and why. From there, it’s a matter of getting certified, and deciding whether you want to start your own practice.

How we landed job interviews for professorships straight out of our PhD programmes

  • Violeta Rodriguez 0 &
  • Qimin Liu 1

We met during the last year of our PhD training, after securing placements at the University of Illinois Chicago’s Department of Psychiatry for our predoctoral internships — the final step of our clinical doctoral programmes. V. R. came from the University of Georgia in Athens and was pursuing a PhD in clinical psychology, and Q. L. came from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and was working towards a PhD in clinical science and quantitative methods. It was amid the academic rigour and personal stress of the last year of our programmes that we became friends. We bonded over being immigrants and not speaking English as our first language while navigating the complexities of academia. We both wanted to forgo postdoctoral training and instead immediately become junior professors. Now, we’re assistant professors: V. R. is at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Q. L. is at Boston University in Massachusetts.

The odds we faced in the academic job market had seemed insurmountable, particularly to immigrants, and we had been cautioned by mentors and even junior faculty members about the challenge ahead. But we succeeded: we received a combined total of 27 in-person interviews, leading to 15 tenure-track assistant-professor offers across departments of psychology, paediatrics or psychiatry, schools of education and academic medical centres. (You can check out our hints for nailing job interviews in our other article .)

How to move labs

Despite the positive outcome, the process was stressful, fast and unpredictable. Our friendship became a sanctuary: amid the daunting job market and our own self-doubt, we understood and encouraged each other. We want to offer what our friendship provided us — understanding, support and encouragement — to researchers hoping to stay in academia after earning a PhD, so we are sharing our reflections and insights.

We must first make clear: no amount of job-search tips and tricks can substitute for good science and a strong publication record. To gauge our readiness, we looked up the CV of the most recent hire in each department that we applied to. We also made sure we had backup offers of postdoctoral positions. While navigating this process, we learnt that institutions were interested in candidates who planned to pursue external funding.

We had both obtained federal and private funding before — making us more competitive. We urge aspiring professors to prioritize their research contributions, external fellowship and grant applications and academic achievements above all.

To readers who’ve successfully navigated this process, many of our reflections and insights could seem obvious. However, this kind of advice can be the hardest to follow during a fast-moving job hunt, with several moving pieces involved and new considerations and job offers or advertisements emerging unexpectedly. Treat this as a checklist before beginning to fill out job applications.

Tips and tricks

Start your search early. Allow ample time to prepare for the job hunt; research potential options, such as jobs in academic medical centres, standard department positions or tenure-track jobs in related fields; and submit applications. Plan to reply to job ads long before the first deadline. Starting early gives you time to collect and incorporate feedback from mentors and colleagues.

Training: Free course on peer review

Prepare your networks. The academic job market can be unpredictable, with opportunities emerging unexpectedly. It is important to think about who can write letters for you — sometimes at short notice. Most of our applications required three letters of recommendation from all applicants. Others requested letters from only shortlisted candidates.

Plan ahead. The final drafts of materials took, on average, one to two months in total to prepare and polish. The initial drafts took about 8 hours, and the research statement required a total of 16 hours. (The research statement summarizes your research programme, the work you’ve done so far and what you plan to pursue in future. It can also highlight why a particular institution is well-suited to support your work.) Preparing drafted statements in advance made it easier to adapt them to different positions later — tweaking materials for specific positions took 30–60 minutes per application.

Research potential job opportunities. Don’t just rely on word-of-mouth or googling specific positions to find things you’re interested in applying to. Use online job boards (such as HigherEdJobs or Nature Careers ), and tap into your professional network by sending e-mails or LinkedIn messages to your mentors and colleagues, letting them know you’re on the job market. Scour social media and department websites to find available positions. We both posted on X (formerly Twitter) that we were job hunting, and several people reached out with opportunities.

Develop job application ‘templates’. Create a set of well-crafted templates for your application materials, such as cover letters and statements, on which you can easily fill in your name, relevant details and where you’ve previously worked. Having adaptable documents allowed us to respond quickly to new postings.

Tailor your application materials. Templates can take you only so far. Take the time to customize your application materials, including your CV, cover letter (each of ours was one page long) and research statement, to highlight your relevant skills, experiences and research contributions. Tailoring your materials to each position demonstrates genuine interest and increases your chances of standing out to hiring committees. Generic applications are easy for hiring managers to reject. Mentioning centres or institutes that align with your research; available resources, such as early-career programmes, that you want to take advantage of; and the names of people whom you are interested in working with can help to personalize your application materials.

Stay organized. Maintain a well-organized system to track application deadlines, requirements and submission statuses. Be ready to remind your letter writers to submit their recommendations. Keep a calendar or spreadsheet to ensure that all required materials are submitted on time and to track when to follow up. An example spreadsheet is provided below.

Practise for interviews and job talks. Run mock interviews with your peers or mentors. Practise answering common interview questions and develop concise, compelling responses that highlight your expertise, teaching abilities and fit. Treat these seriously — you’re likely to be nervous in the real interview, so try to recreate that while rehearsing, perhaps by inviting a relatively unknown colleague or professor to join the practice runs. V. R. recorded her job talk on Zoom and sent it to others for feedback.

Practising your job talk — a presentation of your academic research that is often a spoken version of your research statement — until you know it backwards and forwards will prepare you for the unexpected. In addition, rehearsing how you plan to respond to different questions, and practising saying that you want people to hold their questions until the end, can be helpful.

Prepare a start-up budget to get your lab running. Many academic positions include a start-up fund for incoming faculty members. It is typically used for summer salary and staffing or research costs. You might be asked for an estimated budget before, during or after the interview stage — so you should have one ready in advance. When preparing your budget, keep in mind the spending norms at the institution and for your discipline. Ask for more than you think you need, because this amount will often be reduced during negotiations.

As we look back on our job-hunting experiences, we are reminded of how much we grew in this process, in ways that are not related to just our jobs — and this growth continued in our interviews .
