A full house screamed throughout last night’s Times Square premiere of “Jailer,” a grisly and comedic action Indian thriller starring Rajinikanth, the marquee-topping, Tamil-speaking septuagenarian and self-advertised “Super Star.” Or at least, everybody alive in that auditorium seemed to be cheering for Rajinikanth.

Rajinikanth (“Robot,” “Kaala”) is now 72 years old. His “Jailer” character, a retired cop and prison warden named Muthu “ Tiger ” Pandian, has a sassy young grandson and a knack for murdering villains. Beheadings and fatal stabbings are a Muthu specialty. He also has a vast network of shady old friends, played by a deep bench of Indian character actors and fellow leading men, who help Muthu kill the bad men who threaten his family.

In “Jailer,” the bad men are led by Varman (Vinayakan), a manic crime boss who kidnaps Muthu’s adult son Arjun ( Vasanth Ravi ), also a cop, and threatens to behead Arjun’s grandson Rithvik (Rithvik Jothi Raj), an aspiring YouTube star, while Rithvik and Muthu get ice cream. Varman’s men taunt Muthu by doing a grotesque dance of joy in the street. He retaliates by hacking at some of them with a gigantic blade: “After a point I don’t talk, I slash.” If you come to “Jailer” for anything but Rajinikinath, you will probably leave disappointed.

“Jailer” simultaneously is and isn’t a typical Rajinikanth vehicle. It’s more self-conscious and more committed than some of his other recent vehicles, as far as reconciling the tonal whiplash banked into the Indian cinema’s kitchen sink, mass-audience-minded masala style. The makers of “Jailer” toggle between emotional registers with confidence and alarming frequency, like whenever Muthu helps Rithvik film a gardening program for his YouTube channel, and then resumes his bloody feud with Varman. In a musical montage that only makes sense after a long-delayed plot twist, Muthu and Rithvik bask in each other’s company while an acoustic guitar plays and a singer paints a sunny picture of a man who, in Rithvik, also sees “my leader ... my son.” Meanwhile, Arjun tortures one of Varman’s men, and also orders a fellow cop to not give water to his blood-soaked victim. The acoustic guitarist never takes a break.

The persistent extremity of Varman’s character-defining violence also gives old man Rajinikanth a mandate to be merciless. It’s sometimes even touching to see him match Varman since, as our antihero’s theme song boasts, “He will make your next generation dance to his tunes.” Rajinikanth is perhaps unusual when compared to, say, a Sylvester Stallone or a Steven Seagal , in that he still attracts the sort of young idolatrous filmmakers who all seem obsessed with making the now biologically mature star look eternally iconic. A friend who saw “Jailer” in Los Angeles last night joked about how many times Rajinikanth enters a new room with dramatic flair. In Times Square, each new slow-motion turn to the camera was met with screams. So were Rajinikanth’s lusty action scenes, especially when he finally notices Varman’s barrels of sulphuric acid.

Sometimes it’s hard to tell if director Nelson Dilipkumar knows what he’s doing, either with his star or this movie’s volatile mix of tones and styles. “Beast,” Dilipkumar’s loopy third-generation “ Die Hard ” clone, gives some helpful context since “Beast” pits the relatively young four-quadrant star Vijay against a shopping mall full of terrorists, one of whom he also beheads. In “Jailer,” Muthu is an older man with a legacy to consider. On-screen, Rajinikanth occasionally bumps his head against his emotional range’s low ceiling, like when Muthu cries about Arjun’s fate. In this scene, Rajinikanth leans as hard into his angles as he does whenever Muthu loses it and cackles like a lunatic with a secret.

Before an “INTERMISSION” intertitle flashed across the screen—they never pause for intermission at the AMC Empire 25—Muthu tells us that now that he’s got nothing to lose, he can stop juggling three different faces and just wear one. He says this to his family members after he warns them to stay perfectly still, so that he and his action-pose-ready friends can pick off some more bad men. After the “INTERMISSION” title, there’s an extensive new subplot involving an extra-marital affair, a bad toupee, the comedian Sunil, and the starlet Tamannaah Bhatia . Everybody acts as a version of themselves in “Jailer,” but only Rajinikanth’s performance pulls everything together by sheer willpower.

Rajinikanth is 72 years old, so it’s weirdly moving to see that, every two or three years, he can still crank out a freewheeling star vehicle as vigorous and exhausting as “Jailer.” Just outside Theater 25, I overheard a 40-something-year-old man ask an older companion what he thought about “Jailer.” I couldn’t make out the older fellow’s response, but his chuckle and little shake of the head suggested that he was still enjoying Rajinikanth’s eternal summer.

'Jailer' review: Rajinikanth roars back to form in this mass entertainer

Superstar Rajinikanth's latest release 'Jailer' has graced the theatres, marking a triumphant return to his iconic form following the setback of 'Annaatthe.' The film presents Rajini in a spectacular display of energy and action, evoking fond memories of his youthful vigour.

Helmed by Nelson Dilipkumar, 'Jailer' is an absolute entertainer, with Rajinikanth commanding the screen with his singular presence.

However, the movie's appeal hinges on individual perspectives. Those seeking logical coherence might find themselves disappointed. On the contrary, for those who embrace the movie's mass appeal and set aside the need for rationality, 'Jailer' will be a good cinematic experience.

Centred around Tiger Muthuvel Pandian (Rajini), a retired police officer, the narrative delves into his unexpected descent into a world of action and conflict. This transition is catalysed by the mysterious disappearance of his son, Assistant Commissioner Arjun (Vasanth Ravi), who vanishes while on the trail of Varman (Vinayakan) and his notorious criminal syndicate.

Regrettably, the female characters, portrayed by Ramya Krishnan (as Rajinikanth's wife) and Mirnaa Menon, are severely underutilised. Their roles appear reduced to mere stereotypes of gullible and naive women, devoid of substantial involvement in the narrative.

Furthermore, certain scenes where Rajini's character berates his wife seem contrived solely for a dramatic flair, resulting in a dissonance that diminishes their suitability in the movie.

The film encompasses all the quintessential elements that define a Rajini movie: elegance, mass appeal, dynamic action, power-packed dialogues, and even a dance sequence (although Rajini's participation was limited, allowing Tamannaah to shine).

Vinayakan's presence in the film is undeniably robust. While he embodies a formidable villain, his mannerisms become somewhat repetitive over the course of the movie. 

The film strikes a balance between action and comedy.  Actors like Yogi Babu and Sunil adeptly handle the comedic aspects.

While the pacing wanes in the second half, potentially losing the audience's attention, the cinematic climax sequences compensate admirably.

The inclusion of cameos from stalwarts like Mohanlal, Jackie Shroff and Shiva Rajkumar adds a flavorful blend of ingredients that prevents the movie from unravelling. Their performances resonate warmly on screen, particularly in tandem with the ever-present Rajini. Witnessing Rajini in his full charismatic splendour after a considerable hiatus is indeed invigorating for the audience.

'Jailer' warrants a theatrical experience, especially for those who revel in mass entertainers. Amid the whirlwind of elements within the movie, Nelson has successfully delivered a commendable entertainment package.

Jailer Movie Review: It Is Rajinikanth Looking At The Phenomenon He Created In Wide Angle & Somewhere Accepting His Age Finally, But Rajni Style Doesn’t Fade Even An Inch

Jailer is only victorious because nelson never feels the pressure of serving rajni fans keeping his movie aside.

What’s Good: It is a filmmaker taking the phenomenon of Rajinikanth one step ahead. The blue print is not just a fan service but an attempt to make it substantial.

What’s Bad: Some very convenient routes that the movie takes diluting the entire vibe.

Loo Break: Use the interval. Nothing is so bad that you will feel like skipping.

Watch or Not?: If you are a Rajinikanth fan, plenty of him is here, but not the stereotypical action start. So go in like a clean slate and let Nelson’s idea of the superstar take over.

Tiger Muthuvel Pandian (Rajini), a retired jailer, is now living a life that has no violence around him. One day his son, who is also a police officer, gets kidnapped and is declared killed. The Tiger decides to roar back and takes down an entire syndicate with the help of his star friends.

Jailer Movie Review: Script Analysis

A Rajinikanth movie is never a movie that walks standalone. It has the burden of serving to the cinema deity it stars. It has to not just be a story that impresses but also a platform that gives ample space for this larger-than-life star to walk in slow motion, throw a cigar in his mouth in reverse (he does that in Jailer), or just wear glares with the most complicated hand movements there could be. If done by anyone else, it could be eccentric, but for Rajinikanth, that is his style. Even the dried leaves and mud on the road know when to fly and form a mini storm when he walks by them.

So when writer-director Nelson Dilipkumar decides to cast one of the biggest stalwarts of Indian cinema in his crime comedy, he knows what he has signed up for. Jailer is only victorious because Nelson never feels the pressure of serving Rajni fans keeping his movie aside. He makes sure the movie happens first, and the fan service is a path of it. We meet Rajinikanth praying; he is not dressing up to now woo a young fair lady, but is a grandfather to a 6-year-old toddler. His wife taunts him, and he doesn’t dare to give a comeback. I could see the excitement of the fans fading in a houseful theatre when their superstar did not enter the screen punching some goons, or smoking a cigar. But Nelson takes this risk.

He takes the risk to make the biggest superstar of the country accept his age right in the beginning of his movie. Yes, a flashback where he is young serves as a redemption and the crowd even cheered more on that, but you see how the filmmaker is cleverly serving his sensibilities, the audience, fans, and producers. Jailer, for the most part of it, never shows you the action visually. It is always an idea. Rajinikanth has done enough for you to form an image of him breaking some bones when he enters a room and closes the door. So Nelson cuts to the chase and shows the end result. Now, this could not work for the fans who bought that ticket to watch the star beat hundreds of people in a go, but it is a great idea and must be appreciated.

Nelson, while writing multiple cameos, lives his fanboy dream. Superstars enter the frame one after the other and none demand the limelight of the other, because they are now that content with their share. You can see that in the little moments. Nelson even goes meta when he critiques his own industry when he talks about aged heroes running behind young actors with their wigs on.

Jailer loses the momentum though, post the interval. The second half begins on a high but soon gets too predictable and a big twists feels unnecessary entirely. That twist also leads to the climax becoming the biggest bothering bit about this movie. The writing also forgets the little boy and entirely ignores the women. None of the two ladies get to have a decent conversation. And one of the two is played by Ramya Krishnan, FYI.

Jailer Movie Review: Star Performance

Rajinikanth can now cakewalk through the slow motions and antique ways of wearing glasses, folding legs, sitting, walking; the man even has a style to light a matchstick. But the task for him is to underplay the Rajni Phenomenon, and you see him do that in Jailer. It is fun to see him accept his age in a much more nuanced manner.

Vinayakan, as the big baddie Varma, is a fun character. All the comedy and fear comes out of him, and is written quite nicely. He makes his goons dance to Rahman songs in an Anirudh musical. His hideout is as dramatic as possible. The actor makes sure he doesn’t become a comic relief, and the way he balances the two things is commendable.

Vasanth Ravi is impressive. Yogi Babu can never go wrong, and then when joined by Jackie Shroff, there is enough to hook you here.

Jailer Movie Review: Direction, Music

Nelson has definitely taken a huge risk in Jailer to change the blueprint of how a Rajinikanth movie should look. Not many can dare to break a mold that was so successful for a very long time. But we recently saw a saturation in that too and looks like even Nelson did. This is the superstar’s best work in a long while.

Anirudh is here to revolutionize music and needs to spread his art across the country and, eventually the world. His work in Jailer is so fresh and works so well with the setup. He makes the film sound so larger than life and also grounded when needed. As for songs, Kaavaalaa works pretty well in the movie. The placement of the song could be one of the best in a long time. DOP Vijay Kartik Kannan’s camera worships Rajinikanth in a good way. The wife angle shots are brilliant, and so is the set design in most of the parts.

Jailer Movie Review: The Last Word

Jailer is the best Rajinikanth movie in a very long time. Yes, there was also Darbar , and we know what happened. Though Jailer has flaws too, but none that should make you skip it. Go in if you want to see a fresh take on the Rajni Phenomenon.

ஜெயிலர் Review: ரஜினி - நெல்சன் கூட்டணியில் அதகளமும் ‘அமைதி’யும்!

’அண்ணாத்த’ - ‘பீஸ்ட்’ என்ற இரு தோல்விகளுக்குப் பிறகு ஒரு ஹிட் கொடுத்தே ஆக வேண்டிய கட்டாயம் ரஜினி - நெல்சன் இருவருக்குமே இருந்தது. ‘கபாலி’ திரைப்படத்துக்குப் பிறகு சிறப்பான ஓபனிங் என்று சொல்லப்படும் அளவுக்கு மிகப் பெரிய எதிர்பார்ப்பை ஏற்படுத்திய ‘ஜெயிலர்’, ரஜினி - நெல்சன் இருவருக்கும் கம்பேக் ஆக அமைந்ததா என்று பார்க்கலாம்.

சிட்டியில் சிலை கடத்தும் கும்பல் ஒன்று பல்வேறு கோயில் சிலைகளை திருடி வெளிநாடுகளுக்கு கடத்தி வருகிறது. இதனைத் தடுக்க பல ஆண்டுகளாக முயற்சித்து வருகிறார் போலீஸ் அதிகாரியான அர்ஜுன் (வசந்த் ரவி). சிலை கடத்தல் கும்பலின் தலைவனான (விநாயகன்) எதற்கும் வளைந்து கொடுக்காமல் நேர்மையாக இருக்கும் அர்ஜுனை கடத்திக் கொல்கிறார். இதனால் நிலைகுலைந்து போகும் அர்ஜுனின் தந்தையும், ஓய்வுபெற்ற போலீஸ் அதிகாரியுமான முத்துவேல் பாண்டியன் (ரஜினி), தன் மகனுக்காக பழிவாங்கப் புறப்படுகிறார். பல கொலைகள், தேடுதல், சண்டைகளைக் கடந்து விநாயகனை அடையும் ரஜினியை வேறு ஒரு நெருக்கடிக்கு உள்ளாக்கி, அவரிடம் தனக்கு தேவையான ஒரு வேலையை செய்ய சொல்கிறார் விநாயகன். அந்த வேலையை ரஜினி செய்து முடித்தாரா, இறுதியில் என்ன ஆனது என்பதே ‘ஜெயிலர்’ படத்தின் திரைக்கதை.

படம் தொடங்கியதுமே சிலை திருடும் கும்பல், கொடூர வில்லன், அவரைப் பிடிக்க தீவிரம் காட்டும் போலீஸ் அதிகாரி என பரபரக்கிறது திரைக்கதை. ஆர்ப்பாட்டமில்லாமல் சாதுவான குடும்பத் தலைவராக அறிமுகம் ரஜினி கவர்கிறார். எந்தவித பஞ்ச் டயலாக்கோ, ஓபனிங் பாடலோ இல்லாமல் மகனுக்கும் பேரனுக்கும் ஷூ பாலிஷ் போடும் காட்சிகளில் நெகிழ வைக்கிறார். மகன் கொலைக்கு காரணமானவர்களை பழிவாங்க ஒவ்வொருவராக தேடிக் கொல்லும் காட்சிகள் தரமான ‘சம்பவங்கள்’.

சாதுவான முத்துவாக இருக்கும் ரஜினி, ’டைகர்’ முத்துவேல் பாண்டியனாக மாற்றம் அடையும்போது அரங்கம் ஆர்ப்பரிக்கிறது. இங்கு தொடங்கும் ரஜினியின் ராஜ்ஜியம் படத்தின் கிளைமாக்ஸ் வரை எங்கும் தொய்வடையவில்லை. ஐந்து தசாப்தங்களாக ரஜினி தக்கவைத்திருக்கும் அந்த கரிஷ்மா அசாதாரணமானது. எந்தப் படங்களிலும் இல்லாத வகையில் பல இடங்களின் தனது இமேஜை பற்றி கவலைப்படாமல் நடித்துள்ளார். குறிப்பாக, யோகிபாபு உடனான காட்சிகளில் ரஜினியை வைத்து அவர் அடிக்கும் கவுன்ட்டர்களை மற்ற பெரிய நடிகர்கள் ஒப்புக் கொள்வார்களா என்பது கூட சந்தேகமே.

படத்தின் முதல் பாதி முழுவதுமே இயக்குநர் நெல்சன் அதகளம் செய்திருக்கிறார். யோகிபாபுவும் ரஜினியும் சேர்ந்து வரும் காட்சிகளில் தியேட்டர் முழுவதும் சிரிப்பலை. படம் முழுக்க வரும் டார்க் காமடி காட்சிகள் நன்றாக கைகொடுத்திருக்கிறது. படத்தின் இடைவேளைக் காட்சி ‘திரை தீப்பிடிக்கும்’ ரகம். ரஜினியின் உடல்மொழியில் ஏற்படும் மாற்றமும், அதுவரை அலட்சியமாக டீல் செய்து கொண்டிருக்கும் குடும்பம் கொடுக்கும் ரியாக்‌ஷனும் கூஸ்பம்ப்ஸ்-க்கு உத்தரவாதம். ஒரு ரஜினி ரசிகனுக்கு என்ன தேவையோ அவை அனைத்தும் முதல் பாதியில் நிறைவாக உள்ளன.

சமீபகாலமாக ஓரிரு படங்கள் தவிர்த்து தமிழ் சினிமாவில் வெளியாகும் பெரும்பாலான படங்கள் மீது வைக்கப்படும் குற்றசாட்டு, முதல் பாதி அளவுக்கு இரண்டாம் பாதி இல்லை என்பதே. காரணம், முதல் பாதியே கிட்டத்தட்ட ஒரு முழு படம் போல எழுதப்பட்டு விடுகிறது. இடைவேளைக்கு முந்தைய காட்சி ஒரு க்ளைமாக்ஸ் போல அமைக்கப்படுவதால் அதற்கு பின்னால் வரும் காட்சிகளின் வீரியம் குறைந்து விடும் சாத்தியக்கூறுகள் அதிகம். இதில் ‘ஜெயிலர்’ படமும் தப்பவில்லை.

முதல் பாதியில் இருந்த விறுவிறுப்பும், சுவாரஸ்யமும் இரண்டாம் பாதியில் எழுதப்பட்ட ‘வீக்’ ஆன திரைக்கதையால் காணாமல் போய்விடுகின்றன. கூடவே முதல் பாதியில் காமெடிக்கு உதவிய யோகிபாபுவும் காணாமல் போய்விடுகிறார். அதுவரை பழிவாங்கும் கதையாக போய்க் கொண்டிருக்கும் கதை, திடீரென ‘ஹெய்ஸ்ட்’ பாணிக்கு மாறுவது சுவாரஸ்யம் தரவில்லை. அதற்காக வைக்கப்பட்ட காட்சிகளும் ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளும்படி இல்லை. முதல் பாதியில் அதகளமாக ஆர்ப்பரிக்க வைத்த காட்சியமைப்புகள், இரண்டாம் பாதியில், பார்க்கும் நம்மை அமைதியாக்கி விடுகின்றன.

முதல் பாதியில் பெரிதாக தெரியாத லாஜிக் குறைகள், திரைக்கதையின் பலவீனத்தால் இரண்டாம் பாதியில் அப்பட்டமாக தெரிகின்றன. உதாரணமாக, ஒரு அசிஸ்டெண்ட் கமிஷனர் கொல்லப்படுவது என்பது சாதாரண விஷயமா? ஆனால், படத்தில் குடும்பத்தினருக்கு தகவல் சொல்வதோடு போலீஸாரின் பணி முடிந்துவிடுகிறது. அதன் பிறகு ரஜினி இஷ்டத்துக்கு ஆட்களை போட்டுத் தள்ளுகிறார. தலையை ஒரே வீச்சில் துண்டிக்கிறார், தொண்டையில் கத்தியை இறக்குகிறார், ஸ்னைப்பர் மூலம் சுட்டுத் தள்ளுகிறார். ஆனால் படத்தில் அதையெல்லாம் போலீஸ் கண்டுகொள்வதே இல்லை.

15 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு திகார் சிறையில் ஜெயிலர் ஆக ரஜினி இருந்ததாக காட்டுகிறார்கள். அதற்காக அவருக்கு இந்தியாவின் எங்கோ ஒரு மூலையில் இருக்கும் ரவுடி எல்லாம் உதவுவதாக காட்சிகள் வைத்திருப்பது நெருடல். எனினும், அந்த ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக் காட்சியும், அதில் ‘டீ-ஏஜிங்’ தொழில்நுட்பம் மூலம் ரஜினியை ‘சிவாஜி’ பட தோற்றத்தில் கொண்டு வந்திருப்பது சிறப்பு.

படத்தில் இந்தி நடிகர் ஜாக்கி ஷெராஃப், கன்னட நடிகர் சிவராஜ் குமார், மலையாள நடிகர் மோகன்லால், தெலுங்கு நடிகர் சுனில் ஆகியோர் சிறப்பு தோற்றத்தில் நடித்திருப்பது படத்தின் விளம்பரத்துக்கு மட்டுமே உதவியுள்ளதே தவிர கதைக்கு கிஞ்சித்தும் உதவவில்லை. க்ளைமாக்ஸில் ஆளுக்கு ஒரு ஸ்லோமோஷன் காட்சிகளைத் தவிர, 'காவாலா’ பாடலுக்காக மட்டுமே தமன்னா பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளார். சுனில், தமன்னா வரும் காட்சிகள் போரிங் ரகம். அந்தக் காட்சிகளை நீக்கியிருந்தாலே இரண்டாம் பாதி சிறப்பாக வந்திருக்க சாத்தியங்கள் உள்ளன.

ரஜினிக்கு அடுத்து படத்தில் கவனம் ஈர்ப்பவர் வில்லனாக வரும் விநாயகன். ஆசிட் நிரம்பிய தொட்டிகளை ஆட்களை கொல்லும்போதும், ரஜினியின் கட்டளைக்கு இணங்கி ரம்யா கிருஷ்ணனிடம் பிச்சை எடுக்கும் காட்சிகளில் பவ்யம் காட்டியும் அப்ளாஸ் பெறுகிறார். ரம்யா கிருஷ்ணன், மிர்னா ஆகியோருக்கான காட்சிகள் குறைவு. ரஜினியின் பேரனாக வரும் மாஸ்டர் ரித்விக் சிறப்பாக நடித்துள்ளார். வசந்த் ரவி முகத்தில் எந்தவொரு உணர்வையும் காட்டாமல் வந்து செல்கிறார். மற்ற நெல்சன் படங்களில் நகைச்சுவை காட்சிகளில் பலம் சேர்க்கும் ரெடின் கிங்ஸ்லி இதில் அடக்கி வாசித்திருக்கிறார்.

தொழில்நுட்ப ரீதியில் குறை சொல்ல எதுவும் இல்லை. அனிருத்தின் இசையில் பாடல்கள் அனைத்தும் ஏற்கெனவே ட்ரெண்டிங். படத்தில் பாடல்களைத் தாண்டி பின்னணி இசையிலும் ஸ்கோர் செய்துள்ளார். விஜய் கார்த்திக் கண்ணனின் ஒளிப்பதிவு கச்சிதம்.

முன்பே குறிப்பிட்டதைப் போல முதல் பாதியில் சிறப்பான காட்சியமைப்புடன், மினி க்ளைமாக்ஸ் போன்ற ஒரு இடைவேளை கொடுத்த ‘ஹைப்’-பால் இரண்டாம் பாதியின் வீரியம் குறைந்துவிடுகிறது. முதல் பாதியின் விறுவிறுப்புக்கு ஏற்ப இரண்டாம் பாதியை சீராக்கி, தேவைற்ற காட்சிகளை கத்தரித்திருந்தால் ரஜினி - நெல்சன் இருவருக்குமே ஒரு நிறைவான ‘கம்பேக்’ ஆக இருந்திருக்கும். ஆனாலும், இருவருக்குமே மிக முக்கியமான கம்பேக்தான் இந்த ‘ஜெயிலர்’.

Jailer Movie Review: Nelson's 'Jailer' is yet another watered-down attempt at fan service, but Rajinikanth is solid and Vinayakan is superb

There's a galaxy of major and minor stars in Nelson's  Jailer : Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Ramya Krishnan, Vasanth Ravi, Tamannaah, Marimuthu, Yogi Babu, VTV Ganesh, Jaffer Sadiq, Redin Kingsley… None of them makes an impression. If your response to this observation is to throw back your head and laugh… If you say, "This is a  Rajinkanth  movie, so who cares about anyone else"… If it's enough that we get callbacks to old films and old lines and old habits like smoking on screen… If all you seek is nostalgia, like Rajinikanth reuniting with his  Uttar Dakshin  costar Jackie Shroff… If all you want is a series of shots of Superstar looking stylish and cool, including one super-stylish and super-cool shot where we glimpse his booted  feet  through a half open door… Then read or listen no further. You don't need this review.

For the rest of us who like Rajinikanth but also want him in a movie worthy of his star stature and screen presence… For those of us who have been waiting since Karthik Subbaraj's  Petta  for Superstar to be presented to us by a director with a unique voice…  For those of us who want a screenplay that's unpredictable, and not just a weakly written twist towards the end… For those of us who yearn for the dark-humoured Nelson of  Kolamavu Kokila  and  Doctor  and not the wishy-washy fan-service provider of  Beast … For those of us who wonder why a Tihar Jail flashback that's meant to show the hero as menacing does the exact opposite… For those of us who demand proper punch lines and not silly references to dinosaurs… For those of us who are getting tired of three-hour films that don't bother to do anything exciting or new… For those of us who care about basic things like filmmaking rhythm and set pieces and a coherent screenplay and coherent characters… Well,  Jailer  is another missed opportunity.

In both  Kolamavu Kokila  and  Doctor , Nelson established himself as a specialist in dark, deadpan humour. But that USP took a big backseat in  Beast , which was more about action and other things, and it's even less visible in  Jailer . The "jokes" are weak and watered down. Yogi Babu and VTV Ganesh get maybe one laugh each, but the entire spoof of southern  heroes is a big waste of time. The bit about the villain's henchmen dancing to songs shot on heroines is so lame. And none of this is "dark" comedy, exactly – more like desperate comedy. This is what I think happened. Nelson dreamed up a damn good story about a retired jailer whose peace-loving facade hides a tough  Baasha -like past. In other words, he dreamed up a very bloody and very violent movie, but was forced to make it warm and cuddly because… "family audiences".

Rajinikanth is in fine form, doing what he does best against the backdrop of Anirudh's background score. The interval point is not pushed enough, but it's not bad either. But there are passages where we see what this film could have been had it not had to pander to star image: say, during a scene where two drunk men follow the Rajinikanth character.  I did not see that payoff coming.  And heck, there's a sword attack on a child and bodies being dissolved in acid. But most of the menace is handled by Vinayakan, who is superb as the villain. The cinematographer Vijay Kartik Kannan shoots the actor in warm, bronze tones and with many, many close-ups that make him seem like a maniacal head without a body. What a presence Vinayakan has, whether it's sitting cross-legged on a man he is killing or smoking on top of a barrel of acid! He deserved a better graph and Rajinikanth deserves a better movie.

Jailer review: Nelson’s directorial is a perfect comeback for the Superstar

The director deserves credit for the way he fashioned Rajini's character Tiger Muthuvel Pandian with a measured tone and limited dialogues.

Director Nelson Dilipkumar delivers an entertaining action thriller in his latest outing Jailer which is likely to make not just Rajinikanth fans but also common audiences smile.

Nelson has been careful not to commit the same mistake that some other directors who directed the Superstar made.

Some of Rajini’s earlier films did not work because the respective filmmakers were looking to make movies that would satisfy the fans while forgetting completely about the common audiences.

However, Nelson seems to have a good understanding of the fact that his priority must be the common audience; if they are pleased, the fans invariably will celebrate.

Accordingly, his Jailer is a film for the common person and not just Rajinikanth fans.

Tiger Muthuvel Pandian (Rajinikanth) is a retired Jailer, living happily with his wife (Ramya Krishnan), son Arjun (Vasanth Ravi), daughter-in-law (Mirnaa Menon), and grandson (Master Rithvik).

Life is peaceful for the jailer who is proud of the fact that his son Arjun is an upright police officer.

Arjun, who is not scared to act against criminals no matter how powerful they are, chooses to go after a powerful gang that is into stealing ancient idols and smuggling them to foreign shores for fancy amounts.

The nefarious network in India is led by Varman (Vinayakan), an unforgiving gang leader who knows no fear and is known to be both ruthless and brutal.

When Arjun begins to investigate the idol thefts and the incredible number of murders associated with them, he earns the ire of Varman who kills him.

The death of his son shocks the docile, soft-spoken Pandian, who until then was very content to spend time with his grandson and not concern himself with other issues.

He decides to respond strongly to his son’s death and kills one of Varman’s men (Saravanan), who he believes was responsible for his death. This act triggers a war between Varman and Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, each determined to strike a blow for a blow.

What happens then is what Jailer is all about.

Rajini makes a comeback

Nelson Dilipkumar’s story, which has a generous dose of genuine humour and action, is the perfect vehicle for Rajinikanth to make a sterling comeback. In fact, he uses it with gusto to announce his return to superstardom.

Rajinikanth has always been known to excel at both comedy and action. Jailer ‘s story provides him with the space and the platform to exhibit his mastery over these departments.

Nelson, in particular, deserves credit for the way he has fashioned Rajinikanth’s character (Tiger Muthuvel Pandian) with a measured tone and limited dialogues. These seem to have been done with the intention to amplify the intensity of everything he utters, and it works like magic.

Add to that Anirudh’s scintillating background score, you have scenes that can deliver goosebumps, reminding you of a Rajinikanth who ruled the roost.

Second half falters.

While Nelson’s handling of the first half of the film is exceptional, his handling of the second half is not as impressive. The movie loses a bit of the intensity and thereby, its sheen.

This is despite several twists and turns that genuinely are surprising.

Jailer has the director’s trusted comedy kings delivering humour, time and again. This time, VTV Ganesh who plays a psychiatrist and scores handsomely. Yogi Babu, too, does his bit.

An equal antagonist

However, if there has to be an actor who has to be picked for the finest performance, it is undoubtedly Vinayakan who plays Varman.

The strength of a hero is directly proportional to the tyrannical nature of the villain he takes on in a film. Vinayakan lifts Jailer with his masterful depiction of Varman.

Right at the beginning, he sets the tempo for the movie.

There is not a boring moment when he appears on the screen. He owns the character and plays it with so much passion and intensity that we can see the monster that lurks within him.

Performances and cameos

Telugu actor Sunil, who plays a small but significant role, comes up with a performance that is nothing less than fabulous.

The flick also has fine performances coming from Mirnaa Menon, Master Rithvik, and Vasanth Ravi.

This apart, Jailer has some neat and admirable cameos coming in from Kannada superstar Shiva Rajkumar, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, and Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff.

Vijay Kartik Kannan’s visuals are just perfect and so is Nirmal’s editing.

On the whole, Nelson’s Jailer is a fantastic entertainer that is not just for fans but for audiences of all types.

The Tamil version of the film has generated Rs 12.82 crore in revenue from the sale of 5,91,221 tickets, while its Telugu variant accumulated Rs 1.35 crore in advance bookings through the sale of 77,554 tickets, taking the grand total of tickets that flew off the shelf to 6,68,775. A few days ago, the Tamil Nadu Film Exhibitors’ Association had sent a note to all theatres in the state, urging them to release the film in all cinema halls.

Meanwhile, the excitement surrounding the movie reached an all-time high when offices in Chennai and Bengaluru, according to Economic Times, announced a holiday for its employees on Jailer’s release day, August 10. “Other actors release their movies during Holidays. Despite today being a Thursday, Rajinikanth's film Jailer reported a  71.41% occupancy on Tamil screens in the morning shows. Mostly films see 15-25% occupancy.

Rajinikanth heaped praise on Anirudh Ravichander at the audio launch of Jailer. He said, “Ilaiyaraaja is known for setting up a scene brilliantly. He himself will tell you how to do a scene. AR Rahman, on the other hand, is brilliant with instrumentation. I see both of them in Ani (Anirudh Ravichander). What I like about Ani is that he wants the film to win more than his music. His father and mother should be proud of giving this world such a talent."

“He made me do one take 8 to 9 times. It was in front of Ramya Krishnan for one particular expression. Even Ramya got a bit awkward as I was doing it again and again. This Padayappa lost his face in front of Neelambari because of Nelson. He will not let you go unless he gets what he wants,” Rajinikanth said at the audio launch of Jailer.

At the audio launch of Jailer, Rajinikanth said, “On the sets, one day he came and sat near me and asked, ‘Sir, please tell me about your love stories. I have heard about it from a lot of people. But want to get it from you. The story (Jailer) is all set now. Let’s charge ourselves. So please tell me.’ I was like why should I tell him my love story to charge him.”

Rajinikanth starrer Jailer is all set to hit screens worldwide on August 10.

Jailer: Movie Overview

Jailer is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language black comedy-action film written and directed by Nelson and produced by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures. It stars Rajinikanth in the title role, along with Mohanlal, Jackie Shroff, Shiva Rajkumar, Sunil, Ramya Krishnan, Vinayakan, Mirnaa Menon and Tamannaah Bhatia.

The film was officially announced in February 2022 with the working title Thalaivar 169, being the 169th film of Rajinikanth, while the official title Jailer was announced in June. Principal photography began in August 2022 in Chennai and wrapped in June 2023. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, while the cinematography and editing were handled by Vijay Kartik Kannan and R. Nirmal.

Jailer is scheduled to release on 10 August 2023 .

Test shoots took place in late July 2022 in Chennai, and principal photography was set to commence on 3 August in Hyderabad. However, the start of filming was indefinitely delayed due to a strike in Hyderabad which was expected to last at least three weeks. Filming ultimately began on 22 August in Chennai . By October, filming was also taking place in Cuddalore. In January 2023, a small filming schedule began in Jaisalmer. The following month, filming began in Mangalore with Sadhu Kokila reported to reprise Yogi Babu’s role in the Kannada version. In March, the climax of the film was shot at Athirappilly Falls, Chalakudy in Kerala. Principal photography was wrapped by 1 June 2023.

The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander in his third collaboration with Rajinikanth, after Petta (2019) and Darbar (2020) and fourth collaboration with Nelson after Kolamaavu Kokila (2018), Doctor (2021), and Beast (2022). The first single titled “Kaavaalaa” was released on 6 July 2023. The second single titled “Hukum – Thalaivar Alappara” was released on 17 July 2023. The third single titled “Jujubee” was released on 26 July 2023. The album featuring 8 tracks was released on 28 July 2023.

Movie Review:

Rajinikanth, Nelson make a captivating comeback that majorly works

Though far from perfect, the towering presence of Rajinikanth — along with Nelson’s fortified writing, unique sense of humour and fan service — make ‘Jailer’ a commendable comeback for both the actor and filmmaker

A line from our review of Rajinikanth’s first film, Apoorva Raagangal (1975), goes, “Newcomer Rajinikanth is dignified and impressive.” Even after almost 50 years, the actor has managed to maintain if not multifold that dignity and impressiveness; something that has been etched in his fans’ minds in the form of the “Vayasanalum un style-um, azhagum…” dialogue from Padayappa. It’s this seasoned charisma, along with filmmaker Nelson’s quirky touches, that make their latest collaboration Jailer an enjoyable entertainer.

In the film, the veteran actor plays Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer who spends his time helping shoot videos for his grandson’s YouTube channel. When his son Arjun (Vasanth Ravi), a conscientious cop, digs deep into an idol smuggling racket, trouble knocks on Muthu’s door. Blaming the situation on his honest ways that have apparently rubbed on his son, Muthu steps back into a world he voluntarily took a break from.

Apart from fantastic visuals, wacky humour, and lead characters sporting deadpan faces, all of Nelson’s previous three films have had rather simple plots that are accentuated by the director’s nifty ideas; Jailer is no different. In fact, Jailer might feel similar to Thangappathakkam (1974) to senior audiences while the youngsters are sure to be reminded of Kamal Haasan’s latest hit Vikram. Both the recent films, apart from featuring the legendary stars in age-appropriate characters, are about men who were once officials in service but are now out for blood, with their trusted connections, to avenge their son’s fate. But the similarities stop there, as Vikram is a page from a cinematic universe… while Jailer is a cinematic universe compressed into one feature. Nelson packs Jailer with a host of characters and despite limited screen space for almost all of them, they almost fit in perfectly like pieces of a large puzzle.

The biggest pillar of support for Jailer is its racy screenplay and right from the get-go, we’re thrown into the thick of it. Within moments, Muthu is out on a mission and the film shifts to top gear until intermission. It’s in the second half where the film wavers a little into inconsistent territory. While cameos from Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar are excellent additions, the same can’t be said about other characters that are introduced in the second half.

Apart from his first film Kolamaavu Kokila, Nelson has also had trouble writing strong female characters and it hasn’t changed in Jailer as well. The much-awaited Padayappa-Neelambari reunion featuring Rajini and Ramya Krishnan (who plays his wife Vijaya) isn’t as sensational as one might have wanted it to be. Meanwhile, Vinayakan does a fantastic job as the menacing antagonist, but his character Varma doesn’t end up being an equal foe to Muthu. Moreover, for all the righteousness that Muthu bats for, his flashback glorifies custodial violence.

What makes the rest of the film palatable are Rajinikanth’s sheer presence and Nelson’s unique sense of humour and fan service, which, unsurprisingly, transcends the boundaries of mere fandom. Nelson’s love for the Breaking Bad series has been evident from his previous three films and in Jailer too, the inspirations have inconspicuously seeped in. Muthu’s character shares a number of similarities to Mike Ehrmantraut, one of the hit series’ fan-favourite characters. Even Varma’s underground den reminds one of the super lab beneath the industrial laundry and the ‘use of acid to dispose of bodies’ trope is a clear reference to the series. Easter eggs to Rajini films are aplenty; like the mentions of Baasha, a scene pandering to Rajini’s snake ‘sentiment’, a callback to his iconic ‘Na oru thadava sonna’ line, and even his character name Muthuvel Pandian being a blend of two of his iconic characters, Muthu and Alex Pandian. Not only are these gratifying but double as a hat-tip to the nostalgic magical moments of cinema many of us grew up watching.

Add to that are some decent action sequences that are emphasised by Anirudh’s banger score and scintillatingly shot by Vijay Kartik Kannan; there are a number of mass sequences too that we missed in Nelson’s previous film Beast. Rajini’s last two films, Annaatthe and Darbar, were also underwhelming, to say the least, which explains why they tread on safe grounds for most of this outing.

Jailer might be far from perfect, but with the towering presence of Rajinikanth standing tall along with Nelson’s fortified writing, this is a commendable comeback for both the actor and filmmaker.

Festivities continue

Tirupur Subramaniam, film distributor and head of Tamil Nadu's Theatre Owners' Association, had told PTI earlier, "It is a Rajinikanth film, of course it will be ushered in with celebrations. We don't have fan shows any more like before, but that is not dampening the spirit of the fans. The movie is being shown in 900 screens across Tamil Nadu and all of them wear a festive look."

Manobala Vijaybalan reviews Jailer

“Superstar #Rajinikanth as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian is Charismatic, Valiant and Indomitable throughout the movie. Huge comeback from Nelson with a gripping story line and magnificent direction. Film critic Haricharan Pudipeddi wrote in a tweet, “#Jailer does get a tad long and predictable in the second half but still manages to work on the whole in delivering a satisfying entertainer. Nelson redeems himself strongly and this is the most stylish anyone has presented #Rajinikanth in recent years.”
