Tip 1: Due diligence is a must

There’s  no point in submitting a generic cover letter . If your cover letter looks like it’s been submitted to multiple organizations, employers will assume you’re not all that interested in the job. 

Moreover, if your cover letter doesn’t speak to their job description, they’ll assume you aren’t a good fit. Instead, hit the books (figuratively) and research the company. Then address their specific needs based on what you find online and in their job description.

If you reveal a strong link between your qualifications and their requirements, employers will be hard-pressed not to consider you.

Tip 2: Detail a couple of major accomplishments

No one likes a broken record, so your attorney cover letter can’t simply repeat your resume. A cover letter’s purpose is to relate your experiences and skills to the company in a way your resume can’t.

You’ve successfully incorporated your research, accomplishments, and personal style into your cover letter, but a cover letter is more than that. Here comes the tricky part: adjusting your message and tone.

Your contact info:  Don’t leave your future employer wondering how to contact you. Include your email, number, and address (city and state) at the top of your cover letter. Many employers also like to see your LinkedIn profile.

  • Formatting:  Don’t include your name in the address, whether in a template or block format. In block format, you’ll only need to include your name in the signature. In a template, your name goes on the letterhead, too.

Date:  Adding a date to your cover letter is a professional touch, and it can help both you and the employer keep track of your documents. Just change the date to reflect the actual day you submit your application.

  • Formatting:  Write out the full date, e.g. January 3, 2023.

Inside address:  Although a virtual cover letter doesn’t need to be sent by post, you should still include the employer’s address, also known as the inside address. Include the hiring manager’s name, their official title, and the company’s physical location.

Some companies are a bit tricky to track down, especially if they have multiple locations. Scouring Facebook, LinkedIn, and the company’s website usually yields favorable results. Also, check the job description—sometimes they specify where or to whom your documents should be sent. If there are multiple locations, use the address of the location in which you’ll work.

  • Formatting : Each part of the address should be on a new line. Double-space between the inside address and greeting. 

Greeting:  Every word of your cover letter matters, including your greeting (also called the salutation). A poor greeting indicates a lack of etiquette (dangerous in the highly competitive legal field). The good news? A good greeting is pretty easy to get right. Use “dear” and the name of the hiring manager.

  • Formatting:  Plenty of letters use a comma in the greeting, but colons are more professional, especially for an attorney.

Introduction:  Applying to job after job might get monotonous, but your opener has to sound genuinely excited. Don’t underestimate the power of sincere enthusiasm for the organization and knowledge of its operations. It can also help to include personal details to empathize with the employer. Although, we would urge you not to include intimate details like this:

Your law firm values hard work and dedication, which sums up my career. Ever since I was a child, I wanted to become a lawyer. I even acted out cases with my stuffed animals! As I grew older, I made sure I received top marks in every class so I could attend Harvard, the law school of my dreams. My commitment was so intense that I never had a relationship that lasted more than 3 months, but it was so worth it.

Although this opener definitely keeps the hiring manager reading, it’s probably because they find your cover letter funny (also known as you don’t stand a chance) instead of compelling. It’s far too personal and has no real relevance to the job. Instead, include details that relate to the company and what you can offer:

The Conservation Law Center’s mission to provide legal assistance to conservation organizations exemplifies my goals as a senior attorney. Throughout my career, I have offered at least 60 hours a year of pro bono work surrounding environmental law. The senior staff attorney position at your law center is a way to combine my passion for conservation, my love of mentorship, and my years of experience to provide assistance where needed most.

Body paragraphs:  Each paragraph should substantiate your claims in the opening paragraph. Your space is limited, so focus on the highlights. Ideally, keep each paragraph focused on one accomplishment like this:

Although this paragraph isn’t focused on one task, it is focused on one process, and one aspect of that process in particular. Stella explains the overall trademark clearance process but keeps the focus on teamwork with phrases like “work[ing] with a cross-functional team” and “[giving] our efforts.” She effectively shows her legal abilities  and her team-building strategy, both of which bode well for future employers.

Closing paragraph:  Good endings are hard to achieve because they have to leave the recruiters both curious yet satisfied. Scale back and reiterate the big-picture view of your values and qualifications and how they align with what the company/organization needs. End with a call to action that encourages the employer to reach out. Just don’t fall into arrogance like this:

This job requires someone who has years of experience and who values justice. In that case, I am your perfect candidate. In my 10 years of work, I have never lost a case, and I love to argue until everyone knows I’m right. I know I can win the most cases for your company; reach out to me if you want to hire a winner.

Not only is this arrogant, but it’s also unprofessional. Instead, write something that humbly indicates your enthusiasm:

My goal has always been to provide clients with trustworthy, honest service that makes clients feel safe and valued. Reed McClure shares my vision of providing litigation services to improve the lives of both clients and the community. At your convenience, I welcome the chance to further demonstrate how our goals are aligned and how I can personally contribute to Seattle’s civil case resolution.

This close reminds the employer of the candidate’s persona, values, and aligned goals. It’s also clear that a follow-up is desired and anticipated.

  • Formatting : Single-space your paragraphs, but double-space in between paragraphs. 

Signature:  Mind your manners and say “thank you” if you haven’t already said it in the closing paragraph. Then, sign off with a professional closer along with your name.

Now, let's show you how to execute each section of the cover letter, showing you what to include and what to avoid.

We'll start with the header.

The Header includes your name, contact details, and date.

Your contact details include your email address, location, LinkedIn profile, and website or portfolio.

Here are some pointers to take note of:

  • Adding your mailing or house address is wrong unless the recruiter clearly instructs you to do so.
  • Use an email address that contains your first and last names. Don't use an address with a nickname or numbers.
  • You can use your personal or business email but not your current work email.
  • Don't add your Twitter or other social media profiles if they're not professional accounts or if you use them to express your personal views.
  • Make sure your cover letter contact information corresponds with your resume.
  • Add the date right under your header.

You should start the opening greeting with the recruiter's name. If you don't know their name, head to the company's website and check their About Us or Meet the Team page. You can also go through their LinkedIn profile to find their head of recruitment or head of HR.

If none of those methods work, you can contact the company and ask them who to address your letter to.

In most cases though, finding the hiring manager's name should be easy, especially if the company is actively recruiting.

If you're referred by someone within the company, then they can provide the name.

Avoid using greetings such as, "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam" as they're old-fashioned and out-of-date.

Even if you end up not getting the recruiter's name, you can use their job title instead.

So, these salutations can work:

Introductory Paragraph

The introductory paragraph should embody your excitement, explain to the manager how you found out about the job, and express why you're right for the role.

You don't have to go into details. Just state facts that will compel them to continue reading the rest of the letter.

Show Your Skills

Let the recruiter know you possess the skills they need and show them how you used those skills in the past.

Don't just list what you see in the job description. Show them practical examples.

  • Phone Number. Make sure there are no typos in your phone number, so the hiring manager can easily contact you.
  • Location. Typically, your city and state/country are enough information. But if you're looking for remote work or are willing to relocate, make sure to specify that somewhere.
  • Relevant Links (optional). Feel free to add links to any relevant websites or social media profiles, such as your LinkedIn profile, GitHub, or an online portfolio.

Except for the job title, you don’t need to change your contact information between applications. But you also need to add the hiring manager’s contact information.

Customize this for each cover letter you plan to send:

  • Company Name. Always include the name of the company you're applying for.
  • Hiring Manager's Name. If possible, find the name of the hiring manager for the job you're interested in.
  • Hiring Manager's Title. The hiring managers for different companies will likely have different roles. Some will be head of the department you want to join, while others will be part of the HR team. If you want one less thing to swap out, you can simply keep the job title of the hiring manager in your cover letter as “Hiring Manager.”
  • Location. The general location of the company, such as the city and state/country, is enough. We don’t recommend going into more detail for your general cover letter.
  • Date of Writing (optional). Including the date you wrote your cover letter can add an extra professional touch to your application, so it’s something to consider.

Even in your general cover letter, you should skip the impersonal “To Whom It May Concern.”

Instead, give your cover letter a more personalized greeting. If possible, address the hiring manager by name .

You might need to do some research for that. Check the job ad, company website, or LinkedIn page to find out who’s hiring for the role you want. Then, just swap out your placeholder for their full name.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Today, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey demanded Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas turn over all documents, records, and communications relating to his office’s X (formerly Twitter) post retaliating against Kansas City Chief’s kicker Harrison Butker for comments he made in a commencement speech at Benedictine College in which he openly discussed his Catholic faith.

“Missourians of faith deserve to know why Kansas City officials decided to attack Mr. Butker for his deeply held religious beliefs,” said Attorney General Bailey. “My office will not tolerate religious discrimination from City officials. I will enforce the Missouri Human Rights Act to ensure Missourians are not targeted for their free exercise of religion. The mayor needs to immediately turn over his office’s communications relating to this post.”

In his letter, Attorney General Bailey asserted, “Our nation is founded on a bedrock commitment to the free exercise of religion.  In addition, Missouri law specifically prohibits faith-based discrimination against Missouri residents. Yet, your office apparently believes it is appropriate to denigrate a devout Catholic for comments he made about his own faith at a religious college.”

General Bailey continued, “Missouri’s Human Rights Act prohibits government actors from discriminating against citizens because of their sincerely held religious beliefs. . . To any employer or government official considering such a move, I assure you that I am prepared to use the authority provided in statute to defend the principle of free religious expression.”

Bailey concluded by stating, “Missourians deserve better from our elected leaders. Mr. Butker was well within his rights to discuss his religious views—views which are shared by millions of members of his faith tradition.  Sadly, history is filled with examples of people of religious faith being targeted for their beliefs by government officials.”

Jim Jordan demands NY AG hand over documents related to former DOJ official at heart of NY v. Trump

Republican House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan sent a letter to New York Attorney General Letitia James demanding her office turn over documents related to former Department of Justice official Matthew Colangelo, who now serves as lead prosector for the Manhattan District Attorney's Office in the NY v. Trump case. 

"Mr. Colangelo's recent employment history demonstrates his obsession with investigating a person rather than prosecuting a crime," Jordan wrote in his letter to James on Wednesday. 

"At the New York Attorney General's Office , Mr. Colangelo – who, for some time, held the title of Chief Counsel for Federal Initiatives – ran investigations into President Trump, leading 'a wave of state litigation against Trump administration policies,'" Jordan continued. "On January 20, 2021, the first day of the Biden Administration, Mr. Colangelo began serving as the Acting Associate Attorney General – the number three official at the Justice Department. Upon the confirmation of Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta, Mr. Colangelo then served as the Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General."

But Colangelo left his high position in the DOJ to join the New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg's investigation of Trump months before the indictment of the former president.

"In December 2022, District Attorney Bragg 'beefed up [his] office' by hiring Mr. Colangelo to fill the void left by the departure of politicized line prosecutors Mark Pomerantz and Carey Dunne. District Attorney Bragg hired Mr. Colangelo to 'jump-start' his office's investigation of President Trump, reportedly due to Mr. Colangelo's 'history of taking on Donald J. Trump and his family business.' Mr. Colangelo is now a lead prosecutor in President Trump’s trial," Jordan continued.

Colangelo has a lengthy resume in government, working in a variety of legal roles that date to the Obama administration, Fox News Digital previously reported. He most recently served nearly two years in Biden's DOJ , including as acting associate attorney general and overseeing the Antitrust, Civil, Civil Rights, Environment and Natural Resources, and Tax Divisions.

Colangelo has also previously prosecuted cases involving Trump. 

Colangelo assisted a case in 2018 that dissolved Trump’s former NY-based charity, the Donald J. Trump Foundation, after prosecutors alleged that it had illegally coordinated with Trump’s 2016 campaign. The charity was dissolved after a judge found that Trump had "breached his fiduciary duty."

That same year, Colangelo worked as lead prosecutor in a case involving the Trump administration’s push to include a citizenship question in the 2020 census. The Justice Department ultimately decided to print the 2020 Census without the citizenship question due to lengthy court battles that included having the Supreme Court weigh in that the question could not be added for the time being. 

Experts who previously spoke to Fox News Digital described Colangelo's career move from a top DOJ position to a district attorney's office as "very odd."

"It's very odd. It’s usually the other way around…. And frankly, that sounds to me like somebody who thought, 'Ah, here's an opportunity to go and get Donald Trump,'" Hans von Spakovsky, an attorney and former member of the Federal Election Commission, told Fox News Digital in a phone interview last month, ahead of the trial kicking off in earnest. 

Trump is no fan of Colangelo’s, according to public remarks. He has slammed the attorney as a " radical left [prosecutor] who was put into the state working for Letitia James and was then put into the District Attorney’s office to run the trial against Trump." The comment came before the presiding judge in NY v. Trump, Juan Merchan, imposed a gag order that prevents Trump from speaking publicly about witnesses or the prosecution team. 

"District Attorney Bragg's politicized prosecution of President Trump has serious consequences for federal interests," Jordan continued in his letter Wednesday to James. "The fact that a former senior Biden Justice Department official – whose previous employment consisted of leading 'a wave of state litigation against Trump administration policies' – is now leading the prosecution of President Biden’s chief political rival only adds to the perception that the Biden Justice Department is politicized and weaponized."

The NY v. Trump case focuses on the prosecution team working to prove Trump falsified business records 34 times to conceal a $130,000 payment to former pornography star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election to conceal her claims of an affair with Trump. 

Trump has pleaded not guilty in the case and has maintained his innocence.

Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen, who is considered the prosecution team's star witness, has delivered ongoing testimony this week, including describing that he used his personal funds to pay Daniels in 2016 through a home equity line of credit. Cohen testified he did this because Trump told him to "handle it" as the story could be damaging to the campaign. 

Cohen said he was "reimbursed $420,000" for the payment, a sum he said was "grossed up" to prevent loss of funds to taxes, and argued that Trump was aware of the details of the payments. The checks themselves were described as a "retainer," which Cohen said was a false description.

James' office, as well as the Manhattan DA's office, did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's requests for comment Thursday morning.

President Biden has asserted executive privilege over the audio recordings of his interview with special counsel Robert Hur about Biden's handling of classified documents, according to the White House and the Justice Department.

The move comes as the Republican-led House Judiciary and Oversight committees are expected to advance a resolution to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for refusing to provide the panels with the interview audio.

"Because of the President's longstanding commitment to protecting the integrity, effectiveness, and independence of the Department of Justice and its law enforcement investigations, he has decided to assert executive privilege over the recordings," Edward Siskel, counsel to the president, wrote in a letter to Rep. Jim Jordan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and Rep. James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee.

House Republicans are demanding the department turn over audio recordings of the interview special counsel Hur conducted with Biden in October 2023, about Biden's handling of classified documents after leaving the Obama administration. They also want the audio recording of Hur's interview with Biden's ghostwriter, Mark Zwonitzer.

In his report, Hur described Biden as "an elderly man with a poor memory," remarks that angered the White House and its Democratic allies. House Republicans have pressed their demands for the audio itself, saying the committees get to determine what materials they need for their investigation, not the White House.

At a hearing Thursday, Chairman Jordan of the Judiciary Committee asserted the recordings are necessary because "the transcripts alone are not sufficient evidence of the state of the president's memory."

The judiciary panel went on to vote along party lines to recommend Garland be held in contempt.

Chairman Comer, of the Oversight Committee, said in a written statement that the White House had already waived the privilege by giving lawmakers a transcript of the Biden interview.

"Today's Hail Mary from the White House changes nothing for our committee," Comer added. "The House Oversight Committee will move forward with its markup of a resolution and report recommending to the House of Representatives that Attorney General Garland be held in contempt of Congress for defying a lawful subpoena."

In his letter, Siskel noted disclosure of materials like the audio would make it less likely that witnesses in future high-profile investigations will voluntarily cooperate. And, he noted: "The absence of a legitimate need for the audio recordings lays bare your likely goal—to chop them up, distort them, and use them for partisan political purposes. Demanding such sensitive and constitutionally-protected law enforcement materials from the Executive Branch because you want to manipulate them for potential political gain is inappropriate."

Siskel added: "Rather than demonstrating respect for the rule of law, this contempt proceeding is just the latest in the Committees' damaging efforts to undermine the very independence and impartiality of the Department of Justice and criminal justice system that President Biden seeks to protect."

At the Justice Department Thursday morning, Attorney General Garland told reporters that DOJ had gone above and beyond the call of duty to provide information to the Republican-led House panels.

"We have gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure that the committees get responses to their legitimate requests but this is not one," Garland said. "To the contrary, this is one that would harm our ability in the future to successfully pursue sensitive investigations."

Earlier, Garland wrote in a letter to Biden that the "audio recordings of your interview ... fall within the scope of executive privilege." His letter also cited audio recordings as an important investigative tool in high-profile investigations.

The Justice Department already has provided Congress a transcript of the interview , helped facilitate Hur's testimony before the committees, handed over two classified documents requested by the panels and provided correspondence regarding the special counsel's inquiry.

"In short, the department has responded to each of the four requests in your subpoenas," Assistant Attorney General Carlos Felipe Uriarte said in a letter to the committees.

But he said the committees have failed to identified a need for the audio files of Biden's interview with Hur that would "serve the asserted purposes of your investigations."

He also pushed back on House Republicans' plan to hold Garland in contempt over the matter, saying "a contempt citation is not justified on this record."

"It is the longstanding position of the executive branch held by administrations of both parties that an official who asserts the President's claim of executive privilege cannot be prosecuted for criminal contempt of Congress," Uriarte said in his letter to the panels.

"Production of these recordings to the Committees would raise an unacceptable risk of undermining the Department's ability to conduct similar high-profile criminal investigations-in particular, investigations where the voluntary cooperation of White House officials is exceedingly important," he wrote.

Uriarte urged the committees to back away from their contempt votes, and noted that there is precedent for doing so. He said that in 2008, the House Oversight Committee withdrew a contempt vote after President George W. Bush asserted executive privilege over the record of a special counsel interview of the vice president, Dick Cheney, in an investigation that centered on the disclosure of the identity of a CIA official.

In his brief public remarks Thursday morning, the attorney general cast the House move as part of a broader, partisan campaign against the institution of the Justice Department. Garland alluded to remarks by House members trying to defund the office of special counsel Jack Smith, who has obtained two indictments of former President Donald Trump.

"There have been a series of unprecedented and frankly unfounded attacks on the Justice Department," Garland said. "This request, this effort to use contempt as a method of obtaining our sensitive law enforcement files is just the most recent. The effort to threaten to defund our investigations and the way in which there are contributions to an atmosphere that puts our agents and our prosecutors at risk, these are wrong."

Garland said he would continue to "protect this building and its people."

Arizona intends to resume death penalty in 2025, Democratic attorney general says

Attorney General Kris Mayes said this week her office would begin pursuing executions in cases early next year, potentially bringing to an end a two-year pause on capital punishment in Arizona.

Executions have been on hold since early 2023, when Mayes and Gov. Katie Hobbs, both Democrats, stopped the state from carrying out the death penalty and launched a review of procedures. Resuming them could happen in less than a year, according to a letter from Mayes' office obtained by The Arizona Republic.

The letter was sent to Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell, a Republican, on May 16 with the subject line “Death penalty.” It came after what Mayes described as an “ongoing dialogue we have had about the death penalty over the last 17 months.”

Mayes and Mitchell sparred publicly last year after the duo of Democrats halted all executions.

That public tension had abated until this week, when Mayes included a criticism of Mitchell's office in a footnote to the letter. Mitchell, who is seeking reelection this year, responded with her own sharply worded critique.

Richie Taylor, a spokesperson for Mayes, said the letter came after months of ongoing conversations between their offices about the death penalty.

"The Attorney General intended her letter to be private correspondence," Taylor said. "Apparently, County Attorney Mitchell felt otherwise."

The letters, which are a public record, were provided by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

Resuming executions in 2025

Shortly after taking office last year, Hobbs announced the establishment of a Death Penalty Independent Review Commissioner, and Mayes withdrew a motion for the only pending death warrant. Both said they would await the results of a report to be produced by the commissioner, retired Magistrate Judge David Duncan , before seeking any further death warrants.

A spokesperson for Hobbs was not immediately available for comment.

Mayes said in her letter she anticipated Duncan’s independent review of the death penalty process was drawing to a close.

“I intend to begin seeking warrants no later than the first quarter of 2025, so long as (the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry) is capable of carrying out a lawful execution at that time,” Mayes wrote. “By then, I anticipate that Judge Duncan will have completed his independent review and that ADCRR will have had sufficient time to make any appropriate improvements to their procedures for carrying out the death penalty.”

At the time, Hobbs cited “a history of mismanaged executions that have resulted in serious questions and concerns about ADCRR’s execution protocols and lack of transparency” as a reason for the pause. Mayes echoed the concern, saying executions should be "transparent, accountable, and carried out in a manner faithful to our constitution and the rule of law."

Former Gov. Doug Ducey and former Attorney General Mark Brnovich, both Republicans, resumed executions in Arizona in 2022, carrying out the lethal injections of death row prisoners Clarence Dixon, Frank Atwood, and Murray Hooper. Execution team members struggled to insert IV lines during the lethal injection process for all three men.

There are 112 people on Arizona’s death row.

Letters reignite division between Mayes, Mitchell

The May 16 letter signed by Mayes serves to clarify her position on capital cases, noting her deputies are currently defending over 100 death sentences in court. Mayes also cited her office’s work arguing Thornell v. Jones at the United States Supreme Court , in which her office asked the nation's top court to reinstate a death sentence. 

"As the chief law enforcement officer of the State, it is my intent to enforce Arizona law, whether that be through the defense of lawfully imposed death sentences on appeal or the seeking of warrants in a timely manner once a defendant has exhausted his appeals and ADCRR is prepared to carry out the warrant lawfully," Mayes wrote.

She ended the two-page letter offering to discuss other issues with Mitchell, including "women’s access to reproductive health care and the importance of equal treatment under the law, regardless of a defendant’s wealth, prominence, or political connections."

"Attorney General Mayes continues to hear from medical providers that the County Attorney's silence on whether she will ever bring charges against a doctor for providing an abortion has chilled their ability to provide life-saving care for their pregnant patients," Taylor said. "The Attorney General also remains concerned about the handling of the Charles Ryan matter, as do the victims in this case, the law enforcement officers who believe Mr. Ryan received preferential treatment."

Mayes' letter to Mitchell cites to a footnote, which links to an Arizona Republic story, and says: "On that front, I have concerns about your Office’s recent prosecution of former ADCRR Director Charles Ryan."

Mitchell, in a three-page response of her own on Friday, slammed Mayes, largely over that footnote. She also reaffirmed Mayes and Hobbs could not unilaterally suspend the death penalty and condemned the duo for "delay tactics."

"Your promise that you will start to do your job in 2025 is hollow given that former Judge Duncan's review was supposed to be finished in December 2023," Mitchell wrote.

At his confirmation hearing in June 2023, Department of Corrections Director Ryan Thornell said the agency had been prepared since May 5 of that year to carry out an execution should a warrant for one be issued. The only remaining matter would be the compounding of the execution drugs because they have a limited shelf life, he said at the time.

Mitchell suggested that by including other topics in her letter, Mayes was trying to make a political impact. The county prosecutor wrote that Mayes had "never worked as a prosecutor, but speaking as someone who has spent 32 years working as a prosecutor, I am on solid ground to inform you that prosecutors don't run from bullies."

She repeatedly defended her office's investigation of Ryan, who carried out an armed, drunken, hourslong standoff at his Tempe home in 2022 . Mitchell's office offered Ryan a plea deal that avoided prison time , which was criticized as favoritism by some of the Tempe police detectives working the case .

Mitchell wrote that Mayes had no jurisdiction over the Ryan case.

"If you had a desire to know more, you needed only to speak with your chief criminal deputy — who worked at MCAO at the time — who participated in the review and recommendation process," Mitchell wrote of Mayes' deputy, Nick Klingerman. Mitchell declined to comment about the letters on Friday.

"What is most disappointing about your letter is not that you disagree with the charging or outcome of the matter, even if your opinions are only informed by media reports," Mitchell wrote.

"What is most disappointing is that the last paragraph of your letter implies (if not directly accuses) the experienced, dedicated prosecutors and public servants of this office of misfeasance or utterly inappropriate and unethical behavior without a shred of evidence to suggest the same — because there is none."

Missouri AG demands documents from Kansas City mayor after X account post about Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker

The attorney general of Missouri is demanding information about the circumstances of a post shared on the X social media platform by the official city of Kansas City account that stated Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker's city of residence.

The post, since deleted, noted the Kansas City suburb where Butker lives, which has a population of more than 100,000. The city's account later posted a message saying, "We apologies (sic) for the previous post. It was shared in error."

In a press release , Missouri AG Andrew Bailey said the post appeared to be in "retaliation" for controversial remarks Butker made during a commencement speech at Benedictine College earlier this week.

Bailey also posted to X directly, stating he believed Butker had been “doxxed” for “daring to express his religious beliefs.” "Doxxing" is an internet term for sharing someone's personal information, which can include addresses and phone numbers, without their permission.

“Missourians of faith deserve to know why Kansas City officials decided to attack Mr. Butker for his deeply held religious beliefs,” Bailey said in the release. “My office will not tolerate religious discrimination from City officials."

He said the post appeared to violate the Missouri Human Rights Act, which prohibits actions taken based on someone's religious belief.

"The mayor needs to immediately turn over his office’s communications relating to this post,” he said.

A spokesperson for Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Butker's remarks, which included telling female graduates to embrace their “vocation” as a “homemaker” as well as criticisms of the LGBTQ community and President Biden for his stance on abortion, drew a response by the National Football League, which told People Magazine his views did not represent the league's.

But Butker has been swiftly embraced by religious conservative figures, including Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., who posted an undated photo to X of himself sitting down with the kicker and the caption, "Never more proud to call Harrison Butker my friend."

Conservative media outlets have also rallied around Butker, with The Federalist , National Review and The Blaze publishing articles arguing Butker was right about his views about women.
