As humans , all of us live in a society are bound to a neighbourhood. It is an essential place which has a great impact on our lives. So much so that it does determine where we are in life and how we are doing. It is a fact that if we are not happy in our neighbourhood, we will not live peacefully. Through my neighborhood essay, I will explain about my neighbourhood and the reasons why I love it.

All About My Neighbourhood

I live in a great neighbourhood. It is wonderful because it offers us a lot of facilities. The green park near my house makes the area much more beautiful. Similarly, the swings in the park ensure the kids get to play cheerfully all day long.

Moreover, my neighbourhood also has many other bonuses. A grocery store adjacent to the park makes sure people get all their needs fulfilled without having to go far. All my neighbours buy their things from that grocery store only.

The owner also lives in the same area so he is very cordial with everyone. The grocery store saves everyone a long trip to the market and also their time. The park in my neighbourhood remains clean at all times.

The maintenance team makes sure they clean and sanitize it from time to time. It allows my neighbours to sit and relax in the evenings and take walks in the morning. The clean and fresh air gives everyone a great experience.

Why I Love My Neighbourhood

Apart from the top-notch facilities available in my neighbourhood, we also have amazing neighbours who make our lives better. A good neighbourhood is not made of facilities only but good people as well.

I got lucky in this case because my neighbours are very sweet. They help in maintaining the peace of the area so everyone lives in harmony. I have seen very often that if there is an emergency at anyone’s place, everyone rushes to help.

Similarly, we also organize events from time to time so that the whole neighbourhood gathers and enjoy themselves. I have a lot of friends in my neighbourhood with whom I play.

Most of them are my age so we meet every evening to cycle together and play on swings. We also go to each other’s birthday parties and sing and dance. The most favourite thing about my neighbourhood is definitely the residents.

I always notice how we never let any poor person go back empty-handed. My neighbourhood also organizes a donation drive every year. In this, each family donates clothes, toys and other useful commodities for the needy.

Thus, we all live together as a large family. Even though we live in different houses, our hearts are bounded by the same love and respect for each other.

My neighborhood is located in a a beautiful area, and it is surrounded by attracting trees, parks, and small shops. It is a peaceful and quiet neighborhood, with very friendly and welcoming neighbors. The houses of my neighbor are well-maintained, and the streets are clean and safe to walk around.

People in my neighborhood have different backgrounds, cultures and different traditions. There are families with small children, older couples and people of different ethnicity and religions. Despite these differences of religion, cast and creed, everyone here treats each other with great respect and tolerance, and they come always together to celebrate various holidays and festivals.

One of the most memorable experiences that, I have had in my neighborhood was the annual summer party. Every year, neighbors would gather on the street, grill food, play games, and socialize with one another. Introduction

We live in a nuclear family. My father works in an IT firm and my mother is a teacher. I do not have any siblings nor do we have any relatives in the city. We visit my grandparents and cousins only during the summer vacation.

I felt quite lonely when we shifted here initially. However, I soon met Meera, my new neighbour. I was overjoyed to know that she was the same age as me. We were both eight at that time. I got along well with her from the very beginning. We connected very well and I started feeling really better. I was no longer lonely or sad.

Our Bond with our New Neighbour

Just like I became friends with Meera, my mother got along well with her mother. Meera’s mother is a housewife. My mother and she often have evening tea together. We look forward to such days as it allows us to play at each other’s place. We get a chance to play with different toys and games.

On other days, we go together to the park. We play different outdoor games, take swings and enjoy a lot. We also joined the same summer camp during our last vacation. The camp was for three hours daily during the weekdays. We indulged in many activities such as art and craft, dance, music and board games during this time.

Both of us enjoy art and craft work. We prepared many craft items together even after we returned from the summer camp. During the vacations every year, we also visit the malls together. It has been three years since we have been neighbours and it has been a lot of fun.

My experiences with my neighbours.

We live in a society. There are eight families on each floor. There are several floors and many towers in society. This makes it a big neighbourhood. The residential welfare association of our society is very active. They make sure we all celebrate various festivals together. Big events are organized at different festivals. This brings all the neighbours close and helps them bond well. I have had some really good experience living in this neighbourhood but some incidents have not been so good.

Some Good Experiences with My Neighbours

We are on good terms with most of the families living on our floor. My parents understand the importance of maintaining a cordial relationship with the neighbours and thus make an effort to bond with them.

One of the lady living on our floor is very good friend with my grandmother. They both visit the temple during the evening hours. During winter afternoons they sit in the park and knit. My mother often invites her home so that the two elderly ladies can spend time together.

I also have two very good friends in my neighbour. I go with them to the park every evening. We play together as our mothers sit and chat with each other. We also visit each other’s place to play. I feel great to have good friends in my neighbourhood especially because it makes the vacation time a lot more fun. My parents are working. They both go to work in the morning and return only by evening. I stay with my grandparents during the day.

Since they are old they cannot play with me. But they do allow me to call my neighbourhood friends home or let me go there for a few hours after I study for some time. The company of my neighbourhood friends makes my vacations super fun and exciting. I go swimming and cycling with them during the evening hours. The mother of one of my neighbourhood friends accompanies us as we go for such activities.

We exchange gifts with our neighbours on the occasion of Diwali and New Year. We also have lunch or dinner together to celebrate these occasions.

Some Bad Experiences with My Neighbours

While some of our neighbours are really sweet and stand by us in our good and bad times, unfortunately, we also have some troublesome neighbours. We have had our share of bad experiences when it comes to neighbours. Three girls have rented an apartment on our floor. They often play loud music during the late evening hours. This disrupts our sleep. We also have a hard time studying during this time.

We have requested them to keep the volume low many times. But it seems like they do not bother about others. Another one of our neighbours is quite weird. It is a family of four – two kids and their parents. We have tried to approach them and be friends with them. However, it seems like their parents want them to maintain distance from us. They often behave rudely and do not bond well with anyone on the floor.

It is great to have good neighbours. However, not everyone has this privilege. I am glad to have some really nice people in my neighbourhood.

We shifted to Lucknow when I was five years old. I really loved that place. We stayed there for three years and I made some really fond memories of that place. She prepared tea and snacks for us and welcomed us to the neighbourhood. We felt at home at once. She sat in her front lawn and knitted sweaters during winter afternoons. My mother often joined her to learn some knitting techniques. She once knitted a small blue sweater for my doll. I was overjoyed to receive it.

Many times when my parents went shopping, they left us at Mrs. Shukla’s place. She took very good care of us. Her grandchildren visited her during the summer vacations. We looked forward to that time as we got along really well with those kids. We often invited them to our place and played all day long. Many times, we also went to their place and it was great fun.

The Punjabi Family in Our Neighbourhood

When I was eight years old, we shifted to Chandigarh. It is a beautiful city. It is very well planned with lovely houses and surroundings. We rented an apartment in a good locality. The atmosphere of the place was quite pleasing and so were our neighbours. Our next door neighbours were a Punjabi family. It was a joint family. There were a total of seven members in the family. Their daughter was almost the same age as mine and I got along really well with her. She often came over to our place during the evening and we played for hours.

Sometimes, we went together to the park to take swings and play badminton. She had two brothers who were older than my brother but very friendly. They always called my brother to play cricket with them. My brother looked forward to playing with them. My mother also became very good friends with their mother. They both went shopping together. They often exchanged recipes and chatted for hours. The two years we spent in Chandigarh were really fun. It would not be wrong to say that the Punjabi family living in our neighbourhood made it even more fun.

The Gujrati Couple

I also cherish the one year we spent in Indore. I was eleven years old when we shifted to this city. It was quite different from the cities I had lived in earlier. A Gujarati couple lived in our neighbourhood. They had bought an apartment close to ours just a few days before we shifted.

So, even they were busy unpacking and decorating their place at the time we shifted. The place was as new to them as it was for us. So, the lady often went out to explore the nearby places with my mother. She cooked delicious curries and often gave us some portion. I loved her warm and friendly nature. Her husband was also very polite and helpful.

Good neighbours enrich our childhood experiences. I am glad we have had some really nice ones. I hope we continue to meet such beautiful and helpful people in the future as well.

Sometimes my mother picks us back from school, and sometimes their mother does the same. They always participate in our family functions as we do in theirs. They are really helpful neighbors and a blessing in our lives.

It is always good to have a good neighbour because they are the first people who you go to whenever you are too happy or sometimes in need of something. Our next-door neighbours are the Tanejas, whose family consists of grandparents, parents and two children. The grandparents are retired medical professionals, whereas the parents, i.e. the son and the daughter-in-law, are successful entrepreneurs. They are very kind and generous. They never show off their wealth. Whenever they are available, they call us for tea and coffee get-togethers, and whenever we get a chance, we invite them for snack parties and get-togethers.

I remember how difficult the times were when the pandemic hit the world in 2020. Their family helped us a lot with our medical needs. I was also suffering from symptoms of COVID, so they consoled my parents and helped them in the best possible way they could and prescribed me medications. Instead of creating chaos they helped me during quarantine, supplied me with necessary medicines and arranged an oxygen cylinder beforehand so that it could be used wherever it was required, as I had breathing problems for three days. I am thankful to God for blessing us with such wonderful neighbours.

A good neighbour is a found treasure. Neighbours are the ones who share our joys and sorrows, making our lives easier. When we have a good relationship with our neighbours, they are the first to stand by us in need. A good neighbour will always be ready to help you anytime and in any situation. It is always a boon to have a good neighbour.

Sharma stays to the left of our house. They are kind and sweet people. It took a little time to get connected to them at first, but with time we got attached to them. They are a small happy family of six members. Every single member of the family is very sweet. It's been almost seven years since we moved here. Since then, we have celebrated all the festivals together and enjoyed every occasion. The grandma next door always sends me homemade ladoos, and the kids, Sonu and Dolly are absolute sweethearts, and they love playing with our pets every time they come home. Sharma uncle is really a very good person. He is a professor at the University, and aunty is an excellent cook. She is a homemaker.

My mom and sharma aunty love to share their cooking recipes and delicious dishes. I really like her palak paneer and naan, and she never forgets to send it to me whenever she cooks it. They really help us every time we need them. Once my grandpa broke his spectacle, he was home alone; I was too small at the time to help him. He called Sharma uncle for help, and he immediately helped my grandfather to get it fixed. Their grandma next door is a very sweet and cheerful lady. I have hardly ever seen such an amazing personality at the age of 85. She, too, is a retired University professor. I always have a great time talking to her. She shares her personal life experiences from her college days. Also, she shares about the real-life struggles a person faces when they pass out of school and then college. She helps a lot in my mathematics lessons. She teaches many things to my mother, too, as if she is her own daughter. She taught my mother to make pickles and jams and also taught her preservation techniques. She treats my grandmother like her daughter, and most of the time, they are found talking and going for walks together. Both of them are very fond of Bhajans, and they go to the nearby temple with their friends.

We have been celebrating almost all the festivals together. We both invite each other to birthdays, anniversaries and on various other occasions. The best part about our neighbours is they are not at all jealous or intrusive about our matters. It isn't easy to get good neighbours today as some are really curious about your household, whereas some are not even interested in helping you with your needs. Anyone can buy a good house, but a good neighbour is priceless.

The headlines are everywhere: Americans have fewer close friends and spend more time online . Men, in particular, are suffering the consequences of not feeling seen and connected; many lack relationships of mutual vulnerability and authenticity. Working families are exhausted and overwhelmed–trying to duct tape all kinds of solutions to systemic problems like the childcare crisis and the creep of work expectations into non-work hours. Young people are struggling mightily . It’s enough to make you want to put a blanket over your head and never leave the house.

But, in fact, you should do the opposite! Emerge, connect, get your hands in the soil and your feet on the pedals of a bike. You can start by becoming an intentional, committed, and creative neighbor.

I feel so strongly about this because I have spent over a decade now living in an “intentional community”–a place where people come together over shared values and purpose. I moved in 2013, at 33 years old, from a fairly large pre-war apartment building in Brooklyn, NY, where I knew only one neighbor despite many attempts to reach out. I had always been interested in intentional community, so when my husband saw a Facebook post from an old acquaintance announcing she was leaving her home in a cohousing community–private homes clustered around a shared space–we jumped on it.

This jump wasn’t without anxiety and controversy. We didn’t know anyone already living there. To get started, we attended one shared meal and wrote a letter on how we thought about community–that was the sum total of our “application” process. We had also never known anyone who lived in a cohousing community, so didn’t have any reference for it in real life. My dad, whose financial advice I had always followed up until this point, thought it was a questionable choice to buy our first home in what seemed to him to be a more formal version of the hippie communes of the 60s. Would it have resale value? Would my neighbors turn out to be weirdos?

It is not, in fact, a hippie commune. Truth be told, we are a group of ten households that are religiously, professionally, economically, generationally, and politically diverse, and part of what makes our interdependence work is structure, not loosey-goosey living. In our community, we eat together once a week in an industrial-sized kitchen and dining area, and do work on our common spaces and courtyard one Saturday a month. In between, we tend bees, co-parent small children, bring one another soup, and so much more. We irritate and disappoint one another, buoy and care for one another, and probably most importantly, make one another laugh regularly. We are living into this time of overlapping crises and so much opportunity for reimagining how we live together.

Since there are only 160 cohousing communities in the United States, you probably don’t live in one. Even so, I’ve learned some things from mine about neighborliness that could improve any neighborhood. No matter your housing and neighborhood context, here are ten lessons for more interdependence and less loneliness in this beautiful, terrible time. Sharing unlocks abundance. I didn’t know the first thing about gardening. My neighbor Louise knows everything about the garden; in her mid 80s, it helps her stay vital and healthy to work in the garden and she likes passing on her knowledge. Together, we make a pretty great team. The other day, her hands were hurting, so she sat in her chair in the middle of the garden and directed me. She was the brains, I was the brawn. If I were on my own, my kids would not be eating basil and kale straight out of the garden and if Louise were on her own, she might not have anyone to teach or to share her food with or help her out. Together, everything gets tastier, cheaper, and generationally healthier.

Neighborliness is for introverts, too. Quite often when I tell people that I live in co-housing, they are thrilled and say, “Why doesn’t everyone live this way?” But sometimes I get a far different reaction: “I’m an introvert. I think cohousing would drive me crazy.” The surprising truth is this: because cohousing is structured and intentionally attentive to different kinds of personality types, introverts thrive here. No one is expected to be social all the time, and we all know one another well enough to know who the introverts and extroverts are, and who is a mix of the two. Being neighborly doesn’t mean being chatty. Ideally, it means being in relationships deep enough that you know what feels good and what feels invasive to the people around you.

The tiny things add up to a big feeling of mutuality. How many times have we shared our milk across the backyard fence because our neighbor, Sarah, needed some for her morning coffee and sent a text message SOS? I can’t count. The other day her husband Jon came around with a gallon of milk for us as a sort of accumulated thank-you, so we had one less trip to the grocery store that week. The support is as small as a cup of milk, but the overall feeling of being physically close to people who can make your life easier, safer, and sweeter is huge.

Proximity is key. So often the ways in which my neighbors and I are able to support one another is only possible because we live just a few feet away and either run into one another in the courtyard or respond to a spontaneous and rapid request. Louise knows that split-pea soup is comfort food to me, so when she makes a batch, she often drops off a small container of the stuff for me to eat or freeze. If she lived even a few blocks away, the gesture would take more forethought and communication. Instead, it’s just a right turn in the courtyard and she’s on with her day knowing that she’s been a surrogate mother for a working mom who longs to be nurtured, rather than do all the nurturing.

Nourish the soil with gratitude in order to weather the tough times. Let’s be real, it’s not always easy living in community or being neighbors. That’s why it’s imperative that you have regular practices around paying attention to what’s wonderful and expressing it. In our community, one neighbor created an appreciation board, where we drop little notes and gifts for people, and we often start a meeting with a round of gratitudes . It helps us stay centered on what works, not just what’s challenging, about living interdependently. Life, too, is full of hard seasons. In our community, we’ve weathered unemployment, disability, loss, and so much more. It’s great to have a group of people that can hold you in the harder seasons, and that means celebrating in the lighter ones.

Kids get to be what they can see. In a nuclear family (rarer as they may be), kids usually only have one or two grown-ups to fashion themselves after and learn from. Not in a community or network of neighbors! Kids get to try on all kinds of grown-up personalities, choices, professions, and gender-expressions, among so much else. Are you a boy who imagines doing something artistic–then Revy, a graphic designer, or John, an architect, are worth watching. Girls in the community get to watch women who never chose to have children live full, interesting lives alongside women who did choose to become mothers–another big win for the breadth of their imaginations about their future selves. It’s a cornucopia of adulthood–and they deserve all of it!

Neighbors make great companions for ritual. We’re an interfaith community, so we take turns sharing prayers and rituals from our traditions. It’s an amazing way for us to all learn about one another’s religions–Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity of various flavors–and also understand that even those without formal religion have rituals of our own, as well as sacred beliefs. This also doesn’t have to be religious! A happy hour on a Friday night or a Saturday kids’ movie on the lawn are fantastic cultural rituals that keep us all feeling woven into a fabric of life, ever more comforting in these uncertain times.

Sharing is great for our aching planet. Our community solar panels reduce our monthly bills to around $10 a month, a laundry line cuts down on water usage, bikes help us avoid fossil fuels, a tool shed supplies us with what we need so we can repair things when they break instead of buying new things. The list goes on and on. While each of our individual families might be overwhelmed by the prospect of fixing a broken dishwasher or sorting out plastics for Ridwell Recycling, which we’ve just started doing, there are enough of us around with a variety of skills and energy, that we can usually figure out how to do the most sustainable thing together. Just as “many hands make light work,” many brains make less stress. It doesn’t mean we don’t still struggle to reduce our individual Amazon-ordering or afford electric cars, but it’s easier to do the right thing when there’s a bigger group of people committed to it.

We’re safer together. We live in urban Oakland. The other day I found a woman who was having a psychotic break sitting in the chair in front of my house. I tried to bring her a glass of water and coax her on, but didn’t have any luck, so I knocked on doors around me and found a couple of neighbors that could help me gently encourage her to find another place to rest. We didn’t have to call the police and I knew I had back-up for dealing with a sad situation. That wouldn’t have happened unless I had invested in those relationships before I needed them. We had a shared value-system, which involved staying gentle. When a lot of crime seemed to be happening around us, we called an impromptu community meeting to process our feelings around it. We all felt better after that meeting. We couldn’t change the city and its economic inequality overnight, but we could stick together.

Intergenerational neighborliness is a win-win-win-win-win-win-win-win-win. Our ages from four years old to 86, and that heterogeneity is key to our collective thriving. The youngin’s offer energy, delight, and a sense of hope. The elders offer perspective, wisdom, and remind us to slow down and move at the speed of real relationships. Everyone in between has various gifts, skills, and ways of shaping their days and contributions. Neighbors of different generations not only need one another, but they delight in one another. And that delight is an inexhaustible resource of vitality.

Norfolk Southern agrees to $600M settlement in fiery Ohio derailment. Locals fear it’s not enough

N orfolk Southern has agreed to pay $600 million in a class-action lawsuit settlement for a fiery February 2023 train derailment in Ohio, but residents worry the money not only won’t go far enough to cover future health needs that could be tremendous but also won't amount to much once divvied up.

“It’s not nowhere near my needs, let alone what the health effects are going to be five or 10 years down the road,” said Eric Cozza, who lived just three blocks from the derailment and had 47 family members living within a mile (1.61 kilometers).

More than three dozen of the freight train's 149 cars derailed on the outskirts of East Palestine, a town of almost 5,000 residents near the Pennsylvania state line. Several cars spilled a cocktail of hazardous materials that caught fire. Three days later, officials, fearing an explosion, blew open five tankcars filled with vinyl chloride and burned the toxic chemical — sending thick, black plumes of smoke into the air. Some 1,500 to 2,000 residents were evacuated .

More than a year later residents still complain about respiratory problems and unexplained rashes and nosebleeds, but the greater fear is that people will develop cancer or other serious conditions because of the chemicals they were exposed to. Researchers have only begun to work on determining the lasting repercussions of the derailment.

Norfolk Southern said the agreement, if approved by the court, will resolve all class action claims within a 20-mile (32-kilometer) radius of the derailment and, for residents who choose to participate, personal injury claims within a 10-mile (16-kilometer) radius of the derailment.

The area includes East Palestine and people who evacuated, as well as several other larger towns.

The settlement, which doesn’t include or constitute any admission of liability, wrongdoing or fault, represents only a small slice of the $3 billion in revenue Norfolk Southern generated just in the first three months of this year. The railroad said that even after the settlement it still made a $213 million profit in the quarter.

East Palestine resident Krissy Ferguson called the settlement a “heart-wrenching day.”

“I just feel like we’ve been victimized over and over and over again,” she said. “We fought and we’re still fighting. And contamination is still flowing down the creeks. People are still sick. And I think people that had the power to fight took an easy way out.”

The company said Tuesday that individuals and businesses will be able to use compensation from the settlement in any manner they see fit.

The settlement is expected to be submitted for preliminary approval to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio this month. Payments could begin to arrive by the end of the year, subject to final court approval.

Norfolk Southern has already spent more than $1.1 billion on its response to the derailment, including more than $104 million in direct aid to East Palestine and its residents. Partly because Norfolk Southern is paying for the cleanup, President Joe Biden has never declared a disaster in the town, which remains a sore point for many.

The railroad has promised to create a fund to help pay for the long-term health needs of the community, but that hasn’t been finalized yet.

The plaintiffs' attorneys said the deal follows a year of intense investigation and should provide meaningful relief to residents.

Still, residents like Misti Allison have many unanswered questions.

“What goes through my head is, after all the lawyers are paid and the legal fees are accounted for, how much funding will be provided for families? And is that going to be enough for any of these potential damages moving forward?” she said.

Jami Wallace, too, worries about having a settlement without knowing the long-term impact of the derailment.

“I would really like to see the numbers because in my opinion, taking a plea deal only is in the best interest of the attorneys,” she said. “They’re all going to get their money. But we’re the residents that are still going to be left to suffer.”

Cozza said he spent about $8,000 to move out of town and that — along with medical bills and the cost of replacing his contaminated belongings — exhausted what little savings he had. And he can't put a price on the 10-year relationship he lost or the way his extended family was scattered after the derailment.

The CEO of Threshold Residential, one of the biggest employers in town, estimates that his business has lost well over $100,000.

Last week federal officials said that the aftermath of the train derailment doesn’t qualify as a public health emergency because widespread health problems and ongoing chemical exposure haven’t been documented, contrasting residents' reports.

The head of the National Transportation Safety Board recently said the agency’s investigation showed that venting and burning of the vinyl chloride was unnecessary because the producer of the chemical ascertained that no dangerous reaction occurred inside the tank cars. Officials who made the decision — Ohio’s governor and the local fire chief leading the response — have said they were never told that.

The NTSB’s full investigation into the cause of the derailment won’t be complete until June , but the agency has said that an overheating wheel bearing on one of the railcars, which wasn’t detected in time by a trackside sensor, likely caused the crash.

The EPA has said cleanup in East Palestine is expected to be completed this year.

The railroad announced preliminary first-quarter earnings of 23 cents per share Tuesday, which reflects the cost of the $600 million settlement. Without the settlement and some other one-time costs, the railroad said it would have made $2.39 per share.

Railroad CEO Alan Shaw , who is fighting for his job against an activist investor aiming to overhaul the railroad's operations, said Norfolk Southern is “becoming a more productive and efficient railroad” but acknowledged there is more work to do.

Ancora Holdings is trying to persuade investors to support its nominees for Norfolk Southern's board and its plan to replace Shaw and the rest of the management team at the railroad's May 9 annual meeting. Ancora says the company's profits have lagged behind the other major freight railroads for years and the investors question Shaw's leadership.

The railroad said that in addition to the settlement, its results were hurt by $91 million in unusual expenses including money it is spending to fight back against Ancora, management layoffs and the $25 million it gave to CPKC last month for the right to hire one of that railroad's executives to be Norfolk Southern's new chief operating officer.

The railroad said Tuesday that even though volume was up 4% during the first quarter, company revenue fell by 4% because of lower fuel surcharge revenue and changes in the mix of shipments it handled to include more containers of imported goods that railroads get paid less to deliver than other commodities.

Shares of Norfolk Southern Corp., based in Atlanta, were up slightly through the day after a flat start following the settlement announcement.
