Collection 5 - Filipiniana Materials
Wenceslao E. Retana, a famous Philippines bibliographer and Filipinologist, defined Filipiniana as follows : "books printed in the Philippines irrespective of the subject they treat of, because all of those are indispensable for the accurate study of the typography of the Archipelago; those that are about the Philippines, no matter in what language they were written or the place where they were printed because they are more or less necessary for the study of the country ; and those that were written by Filipinos on any subject, regardless of their imprint, because they are of great use to measure the intellectual capacity, laboriousness, taste, ambitions, etc. of Filipinos."
Due to the adverse elements prevalent in the tropics, Filipiniana materials printed before 1945 have become scarce. However, the Library has a significant collection of books and periodicals printed before that date.
Collection 6 - Filipiniana Theses and Dissertations
Theses and Dissertations presented in the Graduate School of the University of Santo Tomas, specially Filipiniana titles.

Is the official open access (OA) journal of the Department of Philosophy of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), Manila, Philippines. It is a Filipino peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary, and international journal of philosophy founded in 2007 by a group of UST alumni. The journal seeks to publish articles and book reviews by local and international authors across the whole range of philosophical topics, but with special emphasis on the following subject strands:
- Filipino Philosophy
- Oriental Thought and East-West Comparative Philosophy
- Continental European Philosophy
- Anglo-American Philosophy
The journal primarily caters to works by professional philosophers and graduate students of philosophy, but welcomes contributions from other fields (literature, cultural studies, political science, sociology, history, anthropology, economics, inter alia) with strong philosophical content.
The word “kritike” is Greek from the verb “krinein,” which means to discern. Hence, kritike means the art of discerning or the art of critical analysis. Any form of philosophizing is, in one way or another, a “critique” of something. Being critical, therefore, is an attitude common to all philosophical traditions. Indeed, the meaning of philosophy is critique and to be philosophical is to be critical.
Kritike supports the Open Access Movement and is classified under the “Platinum OA” category, which means that articles published by the journal are fully accessible online without a subscription fee. Moreover, the journal does not levy charges against the authors for the publication of their works. Articles can either be read on site or downloaded as pdf files and old issues are archived for future retrieval.

BROWSE ARCHIVAL COLLECTION >
Collection 1 - Libros
Printed and manuscript works dealing with the life of the University and its professors. This is especially rich with the dealings of the professors with the issues of their day, such as the Chinese rites, visitation, etc. The last volumes in this section are regular publications of the University such as the Discursos de Apertura, yearbooks, and newspapers. 429 volumes. 17th-early 20th centuries
Collection 2 - Becerros
Mostly volumes bound in leather but without a cardboard backing. Various manuscript documents on University matters, essentially student grades but also academic correspondence and writings. 58 volumes. 17th-early 20th centuries.
Collection 3 - Folletos
Though initially intended to comprise printed and manuscript works consisting of only a few pages, such as pamphlets, this section eventually came to include book-length works. The collection represents the wide-ranging influence of the University through its professors and alumni, as well as the universal interests of its academic community. 224 volumes. 17th to early 20th centuries.
Collection 4 - Libros de Matriculas de Segunda Enseñanza
Due to educational reforms instituted by Spain in 1865, the UST was given the responsibility of confirming the grades given to students of all secondary schools in the Philippines. These compilations are arranged in hefty (45 x 63 cm.) enrolment registers called libros de matriculas. Names are grouped by school and arranged alphabetically by first name; there are columns for birthplace, residence, subjects and grades. Secondary schools represented in these libros include: Manila schools such as Letran, Ateneo Municipal, and various private schools; those in the provinces such as Colegio de Vigan, Colegio de Dagupan, Colegio de Nueva Caceres, Colegio de Guinobatan, Colegio de Cebu, Colegio de San Vicente de Jaro, and Colegio de Bacolod. Thus this section of the Archives is of particular relevance to almost all parts of the country. 28 volumes, 1866-1915.
Collection 5 - Libros de Matriculas de Facultad
These are the enrollment registers for those who took further studies in UST after secondary school. The names are grouped according to the faculty, including Theology and Canon Law, Jurisprudence/ Civil Law, Notarial Studies, Medicine, Pharmacy, Philosophy and Letters, and Civil Engineering. Volume 12 includes listings of students of schools who continued to affiliate themselves with the UST after 1898, such as those in Cagayan, Pangasinan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Manila (San Beda), Laguna, Batangas, Quezon, Camarines Sur, Albay, Samar, Cebu, and Iloilo. 13 volumes, 1871-1913.
Collection 6 - Internment Camp
Under the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines (1942-1945), most of the Sampaloc campus of the University of Santo Tomas was converted into an Internment Camp for American and European civilians and their families in the country. Included in this section are various papers and documents relating to life in the Camp, such as menus and letters.
Collection 7 - Photographs
Special visits. Included in this section are photos documenting visits of special personalities to the University.
Collection 8 - Libritos
The Libritos section, together with Becerros, Folletos, and Libros, was one of the four original classifications of the Archivo de la Universidad de Santo Tomas (AUST). The contents of all four sections, along with other others added around 1944, were catalogued in the Índices prepared in this same year by Dominican Fathers Gregorio Arnaiz and Felix Vacas. Under Libritos were initially filed booklets such as novenas and sermons, but large and even thick books were eventually included. Some time after 1944, the various booklets and pamphlets that composed the Libritos volumes were unbound and then rebound individually. Generally, those from the 17th and 18th centuries received a hard gray binding; those from the 19th and early 20th, a softer, pink cover. They were also re-classified according to various topics, such as history (Philippine), history (ecclesiastical), history (civil), sermons, Dominicana, papal documents, etc., and shelved in separate boxes. Thus it became extremely difficult to locate items listed in the 1944 Indice. This is the state in which Fr. Fidel Villarroel received them in 1959.
Around 2011, the various loose materials that were presumed to have formed part of the original Libritos section were “liberated” from their previous classifications and re-grouped according to chronological order. It is this collection of 798 items dating from 1516 to 1944 that comprises the present Catalogue 2. Purposely excluded from this new Libritos section were those materials pertaining to Dominicana, the University of Santo Tomas Press, and smaller categories, which will receive their own catalogue listing in the future.

How a UST student’s thesis led to Manila Zoo rehab
ANIMAL welfare and comfortable living spaces were the top priorities of a Thomasian’s architecture thesis which inspired the newly-rehabilitated Manila Zoo.
“I grew up in Manila and the Manila Zoo has become a big part of my childhood where I’ve also shared a couple of great memories there with my family,” architecture alumnus Kevin Siy told the Varsitarian .
“Seeing it fade through time urged me to make it as my thesis project.”
Dubbed the “Bagong Manila Zoo,” the park now boasts of a more sophisticated interior design as well as more comfortable spaces for the animals.
According to Siy, redesigning the homes of the animals was the primary change he wanted to address in his project.
“The main concept of my proposal is to replicate the habitat of the animals and maximize the space we have so that we can provide a more ideal home for them,” he said. “We don’t want them to feel enclosed all the time so hopefully with the new renovations, the animals can move more freely and enjoy their new homes.”
Among the key concepts of his project include larger enclosures for the animals, viewing tunnels for the crocodiles living underwater, and a bigger pen for Mali , the country’s lone elephant.
While conceptualizing his thesis, Siy interviewed zoo caretakers, veterinarians, and other staff in a bid to create a “prime tourist spot and center for education” for the general public.
“I wanted the younger generations to enjoy the park with their families as well and to be able to see its full potential,” he said. “I also believe that the animals who live there deserve the best environment because it greatly influences their overall health and welfare.”
The Manila city government collaborated with Jose T. Mañosa & Associates, an architectural design and planning firm, for the rehabilitation of the park. Siy said that about 20 percent of his thesis was realized in the rehab project.
He presented his thesis to the local city government back in 2019 when the park was closed to the public after being tagged as a major pollutant to Manila Bay.
A soft opening of Manila Zoo was held earlier in December. It has since reopened to the public free of admission and limited only to 1,000 visitors per day.

THESIS – ARKITEKTURA
The project required students to choose a societal issue that they wanted to tackle, be it a large-scale national issue or a smaller-scale local issue. They were then challenged to come up with an aspirational architectural solution while still being satisfactorily grounded in reality. The project may not necessarily be currently buildable but based on new studies, discoveries, or technologies found through meaningful research, can potentially be constructed a few decades from now.
The final projects aim to address the students’ chosen societal issues using discovered innovations while reasonably responding to the projected prevailing relevant forces of its time.

20 Types of Architecture thesis topics
An architectural thesis is perhaps the most confusing for a student because of the range of typologies of buildings that exist. It also seems intimidating to pick your site program and do all the groundwork on your own. While choosing an architectural thesis topic, it is best to pick something that aligns with your passion and interest as well as one that is feasible. Out of the large range of options, here are 20 architectural thesis topics .
1. Slum Redevelopment (Urban architecture)
Slums are one of the rising problems in cities where overcrowding is pertinent. To account for this problem would be one of great value to the city as well as the inhabitants of the slum. It provides them with better sanitation and well-being and satisfies their needs.
2. Maggie Center (Healthcare architecture)
This particular typology of buildings was coined by a cancer patient, Margaret Keswick Jencks, who believed that cancer-treatment centres’ environment could largely improve their health and wellbeing by better design. This led a large number of starchitects to participate and build renowned maggie centres.
3. Urban Sprawl Redesign (Urban design)
The widening of city boundaries to accommodate migrants and overcrowding of cities is very common as of late. To design for the constant urban sprawl would make the city life more convenient and efficient for all its users.
4. Redesigning Spaces Under Elevated Roads and Metros (Urban infrastructure)
A lot of space tends to become dead space under metros or elevated roads. To use these spaces more efficiently and engage them with the public would make it an exciting thesis topic.
5. Urban Parks (Urban landscape)
Urban parks are not only green hubs for the city, which promotes the well-being of the city on a larger level, but they also act as great places for the congregation and bring a community together.
6. Reusing Abandoned Buildings (Adaptive reuse)
All buildings after a point become outdated and old but, what about the current old and abandoned buildings? The best way to respond to these is not by demolishing them; given the amount of effort it takes to do so, but to enhance them by restoring and changing the building to current times.
7. Farming in Cities (Green urban spaces)
With climate change and population on the rise, there is statistical proof that one needs to start providing farming in cities as there is not sufficient fertile land to provide for all. Therefore, this makes a great thesis topic for students to explore.
8. Jails (Civil architecture)
To humanize the function of jails, to make it a place of change and rehabilitation, and break from the stereotypical way of looking at jails. A space that will help society look at prisoners as more than monsters that harm, and as fellow humans that are there to change for everyone’s betterment.
9. Police Academies (Civil architecture)
Academies that train people to be authoritative and protective require spaces for training mentally and physically; focussing on the complexity of the academy and focussing on the user to enhance their experience would work in everyone’s favour.
10. High Court (Civil architecture)
Courtrooms are more often than not looked at as spaces that people fear, given the longevity of court cases. It can be a strenuous space; therefore, understanding the user groups’ state of mind and the problems faced can be solved using good design.
11. Disaster-resilient structures (Disaster-relief architecture)
Natural disasters are inevitable. Disaster-resilient structures are build suitably for the natural disasters of the region while also incorporating design into it, keeping in mind the climatic nature of the location.
12. Biophilic design (Nature-inspired architecture)
As humans, we have an innate love for nature, and the struggle between integrating nature and architecture is what biophilic design aims towards. To pick a topic where one would see minimal use of natural elements and incorporate biophilic design with it would be very beneficial.
13. Metro stations and Bus terminals (Transportation spaces)
Bus terminals and metro stations are highly functional spaces that often get crowded; and to account for the crowd and the problems that come with it, plus elevate the experience of waiting or moving, would contribute to making it a good thesis topic.
14. Airport design (Transportation spaces)
Airport designing is not very uncommon; however, it is a rather complex program to crack; thereby, choosing this topic provides you with the opportunity to make this space hassle-free and work out the most efficient way to make this conducive for all types of users.
15. Sports Complex (Community architecture)
If your passion lies in sports, this is a go-to option. Each sport is played differently, different materials are used, and the nature of the sport and its audience is rather complicated. However, to combine this and make it a cohesive environment for all kinds of users would make a good thesis topic.
16. Stadium (Community architecture)
Unlike a sports complex, one could also pick one sport and look at the finer details, create the setting, and experience for it; by designing it to curate a nice experience for the players, the public, and the management.
17. Waste-recycling center (Waste management)
Reducing waste is one of the most fundamental things we must do as humans. Spaces where recycling happens must be designed consciously. Just like any other space, it has been given importance over the years, and this would make a good thesis topic to provide the community with.
18. Crematorium (Public architecture)
Cremation of a loved one or anyone for that matter is always a rather painful process and a range of emotions is involved when it comes to this place. Keeping in mind the different types of people and emotions and making your thesis about this would mean to enhance this experience while still keeping the solemnity of it intact.
19. Museums (Community architecture)
Museums are spaces of learning, and the world has so much to offer that one could always come up with different typologies of museums and design according to the topic of one’s interest. Some of the examples would be cultural heritage, modern art, museum of senses, and many more.
20. Interpretation center (Community architecture)
An interpretation center is a type of museum located near a site of historical, cultural, or natural relevance that provides information about the place of interest through various mediums.

UST Architecture student brings home top prize in national designer’s competition
- June 18, 2020
Third year Architecture student Bridge Lee won both the Grand Prize and Best Presentation award in the national architecture design contest ArchiNEXT. He was one of the three students from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) College of Architecture who got into the top 10 of ArchiNEXT. The contest results were announced on June 11, 2020.
Lee’s winning design was titled “The Bridge” that presented plans for a site that would ideally be located in Bancal Bay, Iloilo, Western Visayas. Featuring modular designs that use locally available materials and building solutions that give the local community the ability to build it themselves, the proposed site has schools, restaurants, and an amphitheater on elevated walkways. Lee also advocates for and includes in the design mangrove forests along the coastline to protect the locals from storm surges and promote marine life reproduction.
As Lee described his presentation, it had five primary considerations, namely, sustainability of local resources, fisher folks’ continued livelihood, encouragement of the different roles of the community, and the creation of a space where people can gather holistically. In the ArchiNEXT press release, judges commented that “Lee’s entry made a remarkable purpose and he proposed sustainable materials for the site. His idea of helping the locals rebuild a community while learning and earning made an impact in deciding his fate in the competition.”
At seventh place was fellow Architecture student Timothy James Arambulo. Inspired by the beauty of Spanish influence expressed through structures in the Philippines, his design titled “ Daungan ” was a “cultural and architectural fusion that allows visitors in the site to appreciate the importance of the past in the present time.” His park’s planned amenities include sites that are inspired by galleons, sails, local culture, and even a balangay.
Another Thomasian, Lorenzo Angelo Mauricio, won ninth place for his design titled “Green Horizon: About the People, for the People.” Having chosen the site of Quezon City’s “Welcome Rotonda,” his design envisioned a livable community with walkable streets, green environment, and sufficient safe space for the public to move around.
An annual competition that is open to third and fourth year Architecture students in the Philippines, “ArchiNEXT: Hochieng Chiu Group (HCG) Young Designers’ Competition” challenges the ingenuity and proficiency of young students to design sound yet sustainable Architectural masterpieces. For the 2020 competition, it had the theme “ UGNAYAN : A Community Multiplex Interactive Space.” It sought designs for an “accessible, eco-friendly, and well thought out interactive structure for an ideal community which is simultaneously a central, holistic public space that aims to nurture learning, recreation, and play.”
Serving as final judges were Ar. Menchi Manalo, Ar. Michael Tomeldan, Ar. Ana Mangalino Ling, Ar. Efren Aurelio, and Ar. William Ti, Jr. According to the ArchiNEXT website, the grand winner received a prize of PhP 100,000.
