The profession of Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound is a kind of profession that needs enough level of maturity, sense of understanding and the capacity to handle difficult situations with the patient. I believe that it is not sufficient for a sonographer today to be a specialist in the technical aspects of the profession such as expertise when handling equipment and accurate diagnosis of results. Modern day health care requires a degree of humanity amongst medical professional, a facet of the ultrasound profession that is often not given sufficient emphasis. Ethics play a critical role in this field and, hence, studying an Ultrasound program is more challenging than it may seem on the surface. Through this essay, I would like to demonstrate that I have a thorough understanding of the demands of the Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound profession and am well prepared to undergo the rigorous program at Tidewater Community College. This essay showcases aspects of my background that are testament to my dedication towards this field, work ethics, my understanding of the healthcare industry, what I perceive are its most pressing needs, and how I expect to contribute towards the achievement of the same. Finally, this essay will illustrate why I am a suitable candidate for the Ultrasound program and what sets me apart from other applicants. Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Ultrasound is more than just a technological approach that derives images from the human body for diagnosing any illness or deformity in the same. Although it is critical for a person seeking to gain expertise in this field to have steady hands and be well versed in understanding human body, the profession also demands a great degree of integrity and responsibility to address the safety, health and privacy of the patient. I firmly believe that I have the fundamental prerequisites of the ultrasound profession and to demonstrate this, I will be discussing my work ethics, educational values and expectations, and my perception of the healthcare system and the contribution I intend to make towards this field. Through this essay, I wish to illustrate what sets me apart from other applicants to be selected or the Ultrasound program at Tidewater Community College. According to the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography or SDMS (2014), the working ethics related to this profession demands, three very integrated approaches. These are promoting the well-being of the patient, increasing the competent level of the patient and develop a sense of professional integrity, as well as essence of public trust in oneself. The sonographer should be well aware of the concerns related to the patient and thus should be sensitive and compassionate in handling critical situations. Critical thinking is another vital requirement for this profession. A sonographer must be able to identify the individuality of the patient and should be capable of offering care and support in a non-judgmental, as well as non-discriminatory manner. My work ethic is extremely strong and is supported tremendously by my unrelenting dedication towards the profession – a fact that I have proved through my academic and professional life. I have consistently drawn upon my experiences to understand the importance of human emotions. Sacrificing my personal level of comfort and luxury to meet the humanitarian sentiments and emotions is part of my nature. I had attained maturity in this respect since I was 16 years of age, when I chose to work in the corporate sector. My dedication and sense of responsibility have always attained the appreciation of my seniors and the respect of my peers. I am dedicated towards lifelong learning and constantly strive to share knowledge with those around me. I believe that sharing is critical for the growth and development of the human intellect and strive to apply this belief in my day to day life. Not only am I dedicated towards professionalism, but towards understanding the humanitarian aspects of healthcare too. There are instances when a patient should be given enough room to make a decision. The autonomy of the patient and right to refuse should be respected in the most humble way. However, in case of serious instances, the sonographer should be able to create enough trust in the mind of the patient and should be able to convince him/her for the necessary test as it will help him/her for better survival. In many circumstances, this can appear stress worthy, but with my passion for serving people and understand their psychological set up, I can handle such situation in a very appropriate manner. I personally feel that handling human emotions and making someone understand the value of life is the most holistic way to serve humanity. This is the reason that I decided to gain some prerequisite knowledge about this profession. Despite my heightened awareness and understanding of human emotions and excellent rapport with seniors and peers, I realize that, it is necessary to adhere to predefined clinical, corporate and technical protocols in order to be successful in the specific professional of a sonographer. I terms of learning and education, I have extensively read about the medically indicated diagnostic ultrasound profession, and I have become conscious about the fact that this is a profession that needs the lifelong learning attitude. There are so much to know and explore that one cannot learn everything about it in a lifetime. New discoveries, developments, sensitive and innovations, like Telesonography (Arbeille, et.al., 2013), are expanding on a wider range and thus there is a need to remain aware of latest proceedings in every possible way. A sonographer thus, must keep a regular track of all the updates though journal articles, peer-reviewed contents, internet news, latest books, etc., about things that are happening in this respective field. Ignorance of the same can make the profession get out-dated. This kind of state makes me more enthusiastic about continuation of education in the field of diagnostic ultrasound. As such, I am not only dedicated towards getting a formal education in this field, but also further developing my knowledge through independent research and reading. Learning has played a pivotal role in my understanding of the Ultrasound professional. According to research led by Pinto, et.al., (2013), the errors that are noted in the field of diagnostic ultrasound are due to lack of attention made over the clinical history and not examining the patient properly. There is lack of communication in the sonographer with the patient that makes worse kind of situations. Lack understanding about technical equipment, improper application of probes, inappropriate optimization of derived ultrasonic images, and above all over-estimation of personal skills are some of the key features that can create disaster to the patient. In this context, I completely understand that a diagnostic ultrasound professional or the sonographer must have absolute and crystal clear knowledge about the profession, which must get structured under appropriate ethical practices. In the pursuit of taking diagnostic dltrasound as my profession, I have attended professional ultrasound program cases. With patience and matured level of understanding, I have attended several pre-requisite courses over a span of two years that have extensively added to my domain knowledge. This is a very nice feeling, and I have gained confidence in myself for this profession. In order to enhance my skills and abilities as a sonographer, I have tried to collect information from the ultrasound department of Portsmouth Medical Hospital. Actually, this approach helped in attaining enough technical and clinical knowledge about this profession. I was made aware of the regular level of comfort and privacy that a sonographer needs to maintain while examining, positioning and further implementing right draping procedures. As I could get along well with the staff members, I have realised that I could comprehend the way they are dealing with patients and in few of the cases, even my suggestions were considered as appropriate. I have attained the appreciation from the staff members for my knowledge about technical derivatives, which I owe a lot to all those books that I have gone through in my zeal to understand ultrasound proceedings. One my significant strengths is my perception of the humanitarian aspect of healthcare at large and the ultrasound profession in particular. With a very traditional background, I have always believed in the concept of social interdependence. The purpose of any job must serve humanity, and that is the way one can get spiritual satisfaction. As the World Health Organization or WHO has noted (1998), the diagnostic equipment available at the disposal of a sonographer varies from region to region, country to country. However, for the proper diagnosis of an ailment, it is critical for the practitioner to be able to draw the most accurate results possible using what equipment is available to him/her. In order to achieve this, the sonographer has to inculcate a degree of dedicated, humanistic approach towards each screening. There is a need to have appropriate knowledge about the strengths and the weaknesses about oneself. As stated above, state of over-estimation can spoil the whole reputation of the professional and can turn up dangerous to the patient. It is more about understanding people and serving them with the purpose of offering a better health and mental stability. Respect to dignity and privacy of a human being is always a matter of philosophical trust in me. I believe that people count on you when they trust you and to gain the same, you must be communicative and comprehensive enough from the core of your heart. Practical perceptions and the goal to serve the patient must be well nurtured in oneself to get into the realm of trust. In me, the capability to meet the demands of trustworthy kind of inter-personal relationship with the patient is much attained from my journey as a receptionist to the accounts department at the Law Firm in San Diego, CA. It is at this placed that I realised my level of efficiency in terms of being well organized employee who carries a great professional attitude. However, the matter of having patience is attained with the passing of years. With two kids around, I have realised that it is my patience that still creates enough hope in me to lead towards the diagnostic ultrasound profession. I see myself working with people and patients and gaining self-satisfaction as I accomplish my task as a sonographer. My age and my level of maturity are my biggest strength, and I know how to use the same in this profession. These are the elements that make me a better candidate for this profession and a better student for this program. Although I fully understand that undertaking the Ultrasound program at Tidewater will not be an easy task, I am confident that my inherent dedication towards the profession of sonographer and the medical fraternity at large will power my will to successfully complete the program. My strong work ethics, attitude towards learning and my enhanced perception of the needs of the modern healthcare system make me a unique candidate for this program.

For students applying to Diagnostic Medical Sonography, BS; Multispecialty Sonography, AS; or Cardiovascular Sonography, AS. Please develop a thoughtful and organized response to each of the numbered prompts below. Use this as a chance to let the admissions committee get to know you, what your motivation to become a sonographer is, and what excites you to be a part of the field of diagnostic medical sonography.

The admissions committee is looking for responses that are well supported and use appropriate style and grammar.

How to Manage a Sonography School Interview

The interview process may involve meeting with a single person, like the Program Director, or meeting with an interview committee. Following are eight tips for making the student more competitive as a sonography program applicant.

Tip 1 Do research on the program and be prepared to demonstrate knowledge of what the program requires in terms of credits, program length, clinical training and so on. Most of this information is on the website or can be obtained directly from the sonography program staff and faculty. The interviewer will expect the student to have completed thorough research in advance.

Tip 2 Only request the interview after all other application requirements are met. It is very important to follow the admissions procedures carefully to make a good impression. If the person reviewing packets of information discovers missing information or supporting documentation, the interviewer or interview committee is likely to hear about the failure to follow procedures. This makes it difficult to make a good impression.

Tip 3 Applicants who show knowledge of sonography during the interview are likely to improve their standing. It may sound odd because the student has not completed the program yet. However, as Vanderbilt Medical Center points out on its “Frequently Asked Questions” web page, sonography schools are looking for applicants who are making an informed decision about a sonography career and can articulate knowledge of the sonography field.

Tip 4 Be prepared to answer questions concerning career choice . The may be questions such as the following:

  • How did you get interested in sonography?
  • Have you considered other options like becoming a nurse or radiology technician ?
  • Do you have prior healthcare experience?
  • Why are you certain this is a good career choice?
  • Have you performed observations or have other knowledge of imaging in a healthcare setting?

Tip 5 Demonstrate good people skills during the interview. Diagnostic Medical Sonographers work with a variety of people, many of them in poor health. The interviewer will note the applicant’s ability to respond to questions with clear answers in a professional manner.

Tip 6 Be thoroughly prepared to answer questions about information on the student’s resume, essay or application. This is particularly true concerning gaps in employment if the person has been working.

Tip 7 Be prepared to give thoughtful answers. For example, the interviewer may ask, “Why do you believe you would make a good Diagnostic Medical Sonographer ?” The answer should reflect career research, a deep understanding of what the typical job entails, and the ability to express career goals.

Tip 8 Be prepared to ask the interviewer questions, if given the opportunity. This would be a good time to seek information that is not easily located on a website. Asking questions that should have already been researched will give the interviewer a poor impression. Instead, get more information about the faculty or the working relationship of the sonography program to other health programs, such as facilities sharing.

There is no standard interview process or set of questions that will be asked during the interview. The purpose of the sonography school interview is to give the interviewers an opportunity to meet the applicant and get a first impression. It is a process that the ultrasound programs use to narrow the list of applicants.

At most sonography schools, the list of programs applicants is significantly longer than the number of students that can be accepted into the program. The interview is a chance to show the program interviewer, or team of interviewers, professionalism, preparedness and determination to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer .

Sonography Selection Criteria & Application Process

Annual application deadline: may 15th.

To apply for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography A.S. degree program, first review the selection criteria below, which includes mandatory items and optional criteria that can earn points towards acceptance. Next, complete all steps in the application process .

It's recommended that all prospective students schedule a Health Sciences advising appointment , and our advisors can also answer questions by email at [email protected] or by phone: 321-433-7575 . Current EFSC students can use the Navigate appointment scheduling system within the myEFSC portal to schedule health sciences advising.

Selection Criteria: Required & Optional Items

If completed by the application deadline, applicants can earn the following points for the  courses below:    An   "A" is worth 5 points, a "B" is worth 3 points and a "C" is worth 1 point.

  • General Biology (with lab)
  • Anatomy & Physiology I (with lab)
  • Anatomy & Physiology II (with lab)
  • Intro to the Principles of Physics (or higher)

General Education Prerequisite

College Algebra (or Higher)

Health Science Electives One point will be given for the completion ("C" or better) of the following courses.

  • Medical Terminology
  • Introduction to Healthcare

Important Update: As of January, 4, 2024, BONUS points will no longer be awarded for extra classes which are not a part of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography required curriculum.

Please see a Health Science Advisor regarding any substitutions to the above requirements.

A typed, one-page essay on the topic of "Why I am Choosing Diagnostic Medical Sonography as a Career" will result in  2 points.

As an entrance requirement, all applicants must take the TEAS Test (Test of Essential Academic Skills) and will require a Reading Comprehension score of 65% and an Adjusted Individual Total (overall) score of 60% to be considered for program admission.

The TEAS test may be taken twice for application consideration into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program by the application deadline. If the TEAS test is taken twice, the highest score from each section will be collated.  Test scores are valid for 2 years.

No points will be awarded for the mandatory TEAS requirement. See the TEAS Test step in the application process accordion below for more details on taking the test.

Volunteering Experience

Interested students may earn 5 points by volunteering in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program as an ultrasound model for scanning by the Sonography majors and by exploring other opportunities that would jointly benefit the student and the program.

Requirements

  • Completion of 20 hours of volunteering in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.
  • Students must purchase and wear program-specific scrubs (color: wine).
  • Students must complete a project that is both beneficial for the students and the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. The type of project to be completed is to be determined by both the student and the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program Manager prior to the start of the experience.

If an applicant applied, paid and submitted TEAS scores and had at least 30 points in their previous year's application, but was not accepted, they will be awarded  4 points  toward the next year's application. Applicants must have requested that their folder be held over. Students are also encouraged to see a health science advisor to discuss how to improve their chances of getting in at the next year.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography Application Procedure

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program begins each fall and leads to an Associate in Science degree.  Applicants are evaluated for admission based upon the Selection Criteria, listed above.  For selection, you must satisfy program entrance requirements outlined in the Application Steps below.  Program entry is once each academic year: Fall term (August), with the program then running 24 consecutive months. 

APPLICATION FILES MUST BE COMPLETED BY MAY 15th EACH YEAR.

On the day following the application deadline, your file will be sent to the Sonography Admissions Committee for consideration. Once the file is sent to the committee, it will be closed to additional information. Incomplete files will not be considered for program admission. All applicants will be notified by mail of their status in the program.

A file ready for Admissions Committee review must include:

  • Health Sciences Application   to the Sonography Program
  • $25 application fee paid
  • All unofficial college transcripts - from all colleges attended, including EFSC
  • Proof of licensure/registry, in your field (if applicable)
  • Proof of work experience form (if applicable)
  • Recommendation Letters 
  • TEAS scores
  • Advising Card (if applicable)
  • Observation/interview requirement completed 
  • Virtual Information Session attended (if applicable)

Important Note:   The Applicant is responsible for providing all required information prior to the deadline date, including all photocopies, to the Health Sciences Admission Office.

Students must be current students at Eastern Florida State College before they can apply to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography progam. 

NEW STUDENTS:   For students new to EFSC, complete the EFSC  online application for admission   prior to the Sonography program application deadline. There is a $30 non-refundable application fee that must be paid before the application can be processed.

Please note that applications are processed in the order they were received and application processing time may take up to seven days. Check your email frequently for your acceptance letter.

In addition, new EFSC students need to

  • Submit official High School Transcripts (or GED® scores) to General Admissions.
  • Submit official transcripts from any and all colleges attended prior to EFSC (if applicable)
  • Provide FL Residency documentation, complete the New Student Orientation, and finalize any other EFSC General Admissions requirements.

RETURNING STUDENTS:   Returning/readmit students who have not completed a course in the past year must also   re-apply online .  There is no application fee for a readmit application. Readmit Students need to:

  • Submit official transcripts from any and all colleges attended since their last enrollment at EFSC (if applicable).
  • Provide FL Residency documentation, and complete any other EFSC General Admissions requirements.

CURRENT EFSC STUDENTS:   Current Students may move on to the next step.

Complete the online Health Sciences Institute Application for Diagnostic Medical Sonography Technology . This application must be submitted by the application deadline, after you have become an EFSC student. There is a $25 fee for the application.

Applicants must submit:

  • An UNOFFICIAL copy of each and every college transcript is required with the Diagnostic Medical Sonography application. Unofficial EFSC transcripts can be accessed from myGPS or at   www.floridashines.org .
  • A copy of your current licensure/registry in your health or nursing field (if applicable)
  • Proof of Work experience in your field (if applicable)
  • A typed one page essay should be submitted. The topic is: "Why I would like to become a Sonographer"
  • Submit 2 Recommendation Letters 

The above must be submitted to the Health Science Admissions Office (Melbourne Campus, Building 15, Room 101) by the application deadline. 

The following college level courses must be completed with a "C" or higher in order for the applicant to enter into the professional phase (program core classes): 

  • General Biology (with lab) 
  • Anatomy and Physiology I & II (with lab) 
  • College Algebra (or higher)
  • Physics 
  • English Composition

Other coursework required for graduation:

  • Intermediate Algebra
  • Civic Literacy/Social Science Requirement
  • Humanities Requirement
  • Exploring Digital Technology

The TEAS test is offered through the EFSC Assessment Centers and may be taken twice by the application deadline. If the TEAS  test is taken twice, the highest score from each section will be collated. Test scores are valid for 2 years. Be sure to review the Selection Criteria above for details on the required scores.

Applicants are required to observe / shadow for eight hours in the EFSC Sonography Skills Lab. Prospective students should  email the program manager, Dr. Harry Holdorf , to arrange their observation / shadowing experience.  This experience can be done at any time during the application process; however, students are encouraged to complete this activity early, as space is limited. Applicants must bring a resume to share with the Program Manager.

Candidates who take part in the observation / shadowing experience will be interviewed immediately after they have completed their 8 hours of observation. 

Students accepted into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program will be required to undergo a background check and drug screening. Applicants must be drug-free and free of offenses that would disqualify them from the student clinical experience in a healthcare setting. Certain immunizations will also be required.

The background check will include Residence History, Nationwide Sexual Offenders Registry search and Florida Statewide Criminal Records search. The cost of the background check and drug screening is the responsibility of the student. Each program is laid out differently. Some programs do the didactic part the first year and then the second year is clinical rotations, others do a semester of didactic and a semester of clinicals. There's no better way. We all learn differently. Some people like to jump into clinicals right away.

If you are type A personality, like myself. Then, you'll likely prefer doing didactics the whole first year to be slightly prepared for the monster that clinicals can be haha.

Taking a look at their curriculum will certainly define if this is the program for you.

7. What's their attrition rate?

It is important to look at the attrition rate when considering a program, as this will give you an idea about the program. The higher the attrition rate the better. A low rate can indicate that the students did not have the academic support necessary to succeed in the program. However, there can be many other reasons. Hence, ask for them to elaborate on such a rate.

8. What's their credential success rate?

This rate will tell you if the majority of their students were able to pass their registries. This is highly important, as you wouldn't want to invest your time and money into a program that is unable to prepare you for these exams.

9. What's their job placement rate?

This rate will tell you if the majority of their students were able to obtain jobs in the field after graduation.

B.s. in sonography  admission requirements.

Admission to the sonography program is competitive and occurs once per academic year for fall entry into the sonography program. All of your needed prerequisite courses are available at Kettering College. You will need to take them prior to applying for the sonography program.

Preference is given to individuals who demonstrate academic strength in the prerequisite coursework, especially those who complete courses at Kettering. Transfer students are encouraged to contact the admissions office for advising on prerequisite course equivalency.

Applicants must meet  all Kettering College admission requirements .

Admission Criteria

Applicants must present transcripts reflecting a GPA of 2.8 or above (on a 4.0 scale) for all prerequisite courses and an overall GPA for BIOL 119, BIOL 129, and PHYS 131 of 2.8 or above.

The Minimum Grade

A minimum grade of C is required for prerequisites, whether they are completed at Kettering College or elsewhere.

Complete Prerequisites

Students must have completed all prerequisites before an application will be reviewed for admission to the program.

Computer proficiency

All students accepted into the sonography program are expected to be proficient in computer skills required for document preparation, Internet search, and emailing.

All sonography students must be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by completing the class offered by Kettering College during the first sonography clinical course in the program. Students are not required to complete CPR prior to enrollment.

Background check

Students must request and pay to have a criminal background check performed by a College-approved service no more than six months prior to beginning the clinical experience. Beginning the clinical portion of the program is contingent upon successful clearance of the background check. Students are responsible for contacting the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography at www.ardms.org for information concerning past legal issues, as they may restrict the possibility of becoming a registered sonographer.

Technical Standards

Applicants must meet certain physical and health requirements defined as technical standards. The standards are described here on this website and in the Student Handbook.

Applications and all supportive documentation must be received by January 31 for Early Action or by May 25 for Regular Decision of the year in which the student wishes to be accepted.

The sonography enrollment committee will review and evaluate each applicant’s complete academic history.

  • Only students completing the application process will be considered.
  • Completion and academic strength in the prerequisite coursework. Past failures and withdrawals in prerequisite courses  may  impact consideration for admission into sonography. Each file will be considered individually. Special attention is paid to prerequisite grades and multiple attempts in physics and anatomy and physiology.
  • Evaluation of all academic experience. Past failures and withdrawals in other sonography programs  will  impact consideration for admission into sonography.
  • Evaluation of personal essay statement. Statements are scored by content, grammar, and writing ability.  Applicants may include any previous (certified) health care experience. A statement regarding past failures, low grades, or withdrawals may also be submitted with the personal statement.

Other Qualifiers

  • Additional qualifiers such as previous academic degrees, and degrees in allied health or nursing may influence acceptance.
  • Preference will be given to applicants completing six or more prerequisite course hours at Kettering College.
  • While we do use a point system to rank academic performance, each file will be looked at subjectively to determine whether the applicant is a good candidate for the sonography program.
  • The diagnostic medical sonography selection committee will review all applicants following the May 25  application deadline.
  • Selections will be made no later than June 25.
  • All applicants will be notified by mail.

How to Apply to the Sonography Program

Admission enrollment is limited and competitive based upon accreditation standards and guidelines as well as the available resources of the sponsoring institutions. A maximum of four are accepted on a competitive basis each year to the Sonography Program. The student positions are located at the Trinity Health medical campus in Minot, North Dakota.

Students pursuing the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) degree with Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) should complete the DCB application for admission. Students are jointly admitted to DCB and Trinity Health Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. The AAS in DMS degree requires the satisfactory completion of 91 credit hours that includes 32 credit hours of general education, 50 credit hours of core course requirements, and nine credit hours of clinical training.

Full-time students who follow the recommended curriculum course sequence can complete their associate degree and the sonography program in approximately 28 months. Full-time students who follow the recommended curriculum course sequence can complete their bachelor degree and the sonography program in approximately four  years. Students pursuing academic degrees should refer to the respective degree granting institutions for academic advisement on completing their requirements.

Applicants are most competitive if they have:

• A GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale • An ACT composite score of 20 or higher • Previous patient care experience • Observed sonographic procedures • Prerequisite coursework that is less than seven years old • A bachelor's degree or are enrolled in an affiliated university • No more than two courses in progress at the time of interviews

Having this page available while completing the online application is helpful as these directions are specific to the program.

1. Online Application

Complete the online application for admission. After accessing the application form, complete each section. Application window opens December 1 and closes March 31 for August program start date. entry. Applications received after the deadline will be considered on a space available basis. The online application is located on the right hand side of this page.

In the Education Information section of the application, declare a degree plan under diploma/degree/major courses column. Degree plans will be verified with proof of unconditional admission and in a position of good standing with an affiliated college or university via official transcripts. Applicants holding a degree will apply as a certificate recipient.

3. Personal References

Access the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Personal Reference Form on the right side of this page, print a copy, complete the applicant section, sign and date it, then email, fax, or mail. The program director will then send reference forms to the applicant’s three selected individuals.

4. Technical Standards

Student must meet the required essential functions and the technical standards as documented on the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Technical Standards form found on the right side of this page. Print a copy, review the technical standard expectations, complete the applicant section with your name, signature and date, then email, fax, or mail.

5. Observation Job Shadow

Documented evidence of a minimum of four hours of observation in an ultrasound department with a registered sonographer recorded on program clinical observation documentation form is required. Contact the Program Director if needing assistance in scheduling a sonographer observation experience at Trinity Health in Minot. Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program Clinical Observation Documentation Form can be found on the right side of this page. Print a copy, review the observation expectations, complete the form, include your signature and date, then email, fax, or mail.

Proof of active/current AHA approved CPR certification for Healthcare Providers (or BLS).

7. Supporting Documentation

Submit official transcripts of all high school, college, and university credits. Transcripts must include the embossed school seal and should be sent in the original unopened envelopes to the program director. If ACT scores are not available on transcripts, include an official ACT report.

A GPA of 2.75 or greater on a 4.0 scale with a grade of “C” or better on all general prerequisites. A program selection academic scoring will be completed on grades received on anatomy and physiology, algebra, physics, medical terminology, English and communication, healthcare law and ethics, humanities, and introduction to computer science courses. Prerequisites must have been completed within seven years of the date of expected entry into the DMS program.

Hello and welcome. I want to start by saying that Gurnick Academy is a fantastic place to learn echocardiography, and I hope I have the opportunity to start this exciting career path with you. Let me tell you a little about myself:

In June 2019,­­­ I was brought on board to be the Program Director for Ultrasound at the Sacramento Campus and made Program Director of the Echocardiography program in 2023. I have been practicing ultrasound/Echocardiography for over ten years, emphasizing complex ultrasound cases within a teaching hospital (UC Davis).

I have prior managerial experience and teaching experience in the clinical setting of UC Davis. I have two papers published in the Ultrasound Journal of Medicine and published pediatric protocols adopted by all the hospitals in the surrounding areas. Also, my military experience has guided me to run the program more efficiently, allowing for excellent student and clinical site satisfaction .

Hello, I am Larisa Rud Lein, the Ultrasound Programs Director of the San Jose Campus. I have been an ultrasound technologist since 1991. I worked in the Yale New Haven Health System in Connecticut for over 30 years.

I relocated to the Bay Area in 2019 and joined the Gurnick Academy Family. As the Program Director of the Ultrasound Programs, I am thrilled to contribute towards introducing this program to the next wave of ultrasound technologists .

Train students to be professional and competent cardiac sonographers in the medical imaging community by developing their visual, oral, and written communication and critical thinking skills.

Develop interpersonal skills in communicating and interacting with patients of all generations, cultures, and medical conditions.

Develop interpersonal skills in communicating and interacting with medical and administrative personnel in the medical imaging setting so they will be effective team players.

Emphasize the importance and need of becoming credentialed in the profession of cardiac sonography.

Prepare students to pass the ARDMS certification exam.

A.O.S. in Cardiac Ultrasound Technology Program Information, Length, and Schedule

*(72 Approved Instructional Weeks)

The program information, length, and schedule may change. Read the accompanying Addendum for changes and updates, and check in with an Admission Advisor for more details. The Cardiac Ultrasound Technology Program has a library and classrooms with audiovisual teaching aids, textbooks, journals, anatomical charts, models, and e-library resources. The scan laboratory is equipped with ultrasound machines and other cardiology equipment.

The Cardiac Ultrasound Technology Program is an Associate of Occupational Science Degree program. The student will receive didactic, laboratory, and clinical education focused on cardiac ultrasound, covering cardiac anatomy and physiology, 2D and M-Mode imaging, PW, CW, and color flow Doppler, cardiac pathology, and methods of interpretation, which will be combined with General Education courses. The Instructor-to-Student ratio is 1:25 during lectures, 1:10 in the laboratory, and 1:1 during clinical externships.

The program comprises six (6) modules of 12 weeks each. During the program’s first module (12 weeks), students will take General Education courses up to 24 hours per week via online delivery. During the second module (12 weeks), students will continue to take General Education courses online for up to 24 hours per week for the first 12 weeks.

The following two (2) modules (Modules 3 and 4) consist of didactic and lab sessions only, which include three (3) to five (5) days per week of up to eight (8) hours per day of didactic and lab instruction. After completing four (4) modules, students are generally expected to start attending externships four (4) days a week.

Registry Preparation Courses (RPC) are scheduled monthly on days to be announced on a separate schedule and in no particular order.

The student receives 992 didactic and laboratory instruction hours and 800 clinical education hours, allowing them to apply the lecture topics to practical use. The curriculum provides students with the technical, clinical, and interpersonal skills necessary to succeed in this field. In addition, the program prepares students to take their RCDS examinations.

An Associate of Occupational Science Degree in Cardiac Ultrasound Technology is awarded upon program completion. The normal completion time for this program is 72 weeks, excluding any holiday and vacation times. Class times can and may be rescheduled on an alternate day of the week (i.e., Sunday through Saturday) to ensure program completion is on time and the required program hours are fulfilled.

Voluntary and Prudent Use Statement for Ultrasound Technology

Instructions in the ultrasound training laboratory are made possible by the participation of students, both as the person scanning and the person being scanned (subject). All the exercises are developed to ensure prudent and safe use of the equipment and the subject. Participation is voluntary. Election not to participate will not affect grades. However, alternate training will need to be arranged.

  • Attend or view a live or recorded information session.
  • Submit original transcripts from the Registrar at an educational institution for applicants requesting credit granting for some or all General Education courses. Copies are not accepted. All coursework must be completed and given a grade of at least a “C.” Anatomy and Physiology I with Laboratory must be completed within the last five (5) years. All credit granting is subject to the approval of the Program Director or Program Coordinator. Please allow seven (7) days for review.

Each program has specific physical and non-physical requirements to ensure the safety and welfare of students and patients. 

A.O.S. in Cardiac Ultrasound Technology program, students must be in good health and able to:

  • Lift over 50 pounds (22.68 kg) and push and pull routinely.
  • Hear sufficiently to assess patient needs and communicate verbally with other healthcare providers.
  • Have full use of arms, hands, and wrists.
  • Possess adequate visual acuity to review sonograms, including color distinctions.
  • Stand and walk on your feet 80 percent of the time.
  • Reach at or above shoulder level intermittently for 90 percent of work time.
  • Work compassionately and effectively with sick patients.

A.O.S. in Cardiac Ultrasound Technology program students must have sufficient strength, motor coordination, and manual dexterity to:

  • Transport, move, lift, and transfer patients from a wheelchair or cart to a sonography table or a patient bed.
  • Move, adjust, and manipulate various sonographic equipment, including the physical transportation of mobile sonographic machines, to complete examinations on the patient according to established procedures and standards of speed and accuracy.

A.O.S. in Cardiac Ultrasound Technology program students must also be capable of:

  • Handling stressful situations related to technical and procedural standards and patient care situations.
  • Providing physical and emotional support to the patient during the sonographic procedures, responding to situations requiring first aid, and providing emergency care to the patient without, or until, the physician arrives.
  • Communicating verbally in an effective manner to direct patients during sonographic examinations.
  • Visually recognizing anatomy on the CRT screen.
  • Reading and interpreting patient charts and requisitions for sonographic examinations.

A.O.S. in Cardiac Ultrasound Technology program students must have the mental and intellectual capacity to:

  • Calculate and select proper technical factors according to the patient’s individual needs and the requirements of the procedure’s standards of speed and accuracy.
  • Review and evaluate the recorded images on a CRT and archiving system to identify patient pathology, if present, accurate procedural sequencing, completion of a diagnostic examination, and other appropriate and pertinent technical qualities.

The following requirements must be met for a student to graduate from the Cardiac Ultrasound Technology program at Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts:

Certification for Sonography Professionals

The law does not require ultrasonographers to be registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) to work. However, such credentials may increase hiring chances.

Graduates accepted to the program with an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in an allied health field directed at human patient care are eligible to sit for the ARDMS examination immediately after completing the program under ARDMS prerequisite 1. Meanwhile, graduates with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree are eligible to sit for the ARDMS examination immediately after completing the program under ARDMS prerequisite 3A or for the CCI examination.

Graduates accepted to the program with an Associate Degree in any field or High School Diploma (HSD) or GED are eligible to sit for the CCI (RCS) examination immediately after completing the program. Upon obtaining the CCI (RCS) certification, graduates may sit for the ARDMS (RDCS) examination under ARDMS prerequisite 5.

How To Create A Killer Radiology Personal Statement

Personal statements in the radiology field are the least effective way to bolster your application. ( 1 ) Rarely, do they help an applicant. Occasionally, they hurt the applicant’s case. Regardless, I am aware that the personal statement will often become essential to many viewers of this article who apply to radiology regardless of whatever I say.  Therefore, I am creating this blog for anyone that is applying for a radiology related job to learn to create that killer radiology personal statement. And, today I am going to recount some of the basics for creating one. Specifically, I am going to start by explaining the parts of a great radiology personal statement and then give you some general tips that I have learned over the years from blogging and reading many personal statements.

First Paragraph:

After having rummaged through thousands of radiology personal statements and writing lots of blogs, I can definitely say that the key paragraph for the reader begins at the beginning. If it is average/boring, I have almost zero desire to read the rest of the statement, especially when you have another 10 more to read that day. Something in the few first few sentences needs to draw the reader in quickly. You are not writing a short story or novel where you can slowly develop your characters and plot. Rather, you need to write using a technique that I like to call the hook. Reel that program director in.

There are several techniques that I have seen over the years. Let’s start by using the writing technique of irony. Notice the irony I chose in the first paragraph of this article. I started by saying personal statements are the least effective way to bolster your application. Whoa, wait a minute! The title of the article is How To Create A Killer Personal Statement. That’s somewhat interesting. The dissonance in that first paragraph draws the reader in.

So, what other techniques can you use to maintain the interest of the reader? Sometimes quotes can certainly help. Once in a while, I come across a quote that really interests me. I tend to like quotes from Albert Einstein. They tend to be witty and have double meanings. But, there are certainly millions to choose from. A good quote can set the tone for the rest of the personal statement.

Finally, you can write about an interesting theatrical description of a life-altering event that caused you to want to go into radiology. Use descriptive novel-like adjectives and adverbs. Go to town. However, be careful. Don’t choose the same events as everyone else. Tell Why You Are Interested In Radiology

The first paragraph is also an important place to tell the reader why you are interested in radiology. Many times I will read a radiology personal statement and say to myself that was kind of interesting, but why does this person want to go into the radiology field? He/she never quite answers the question and I am left feeling that this person does not know why they want to enter the field. Don’t let that be you!

Second Paragraph:

Explain any problems/issues.

I like the applicant to be upfront with the reader rather quickly if there was an issue that may cause a program director or resident to discard an application. It could be addressing something as serious as a former conviction for drunk driving when you were young and stupid. Or, it could be something milder like a questionable quotation from a mentor that you found in your Deans Letter. Either way, you need to explain yourself. Otherwise, the problem/issue can declare itself as a red flag. Subsequently, it can prevent you from getting the interview that you really want.

Second and Third Paragraphs

Expand upon your application.

Let’s say you don’t really have any red flags in your application. Well then, now you can write about some of the things that you accomplished that you want to bring to the attention of your reader. Typically, these may be items in your application that are partially explained in the experience or research sections of the ERAS application but really deserve further emphasis or explanation.

Show Not Tell

In addition, the meat of any personal statement should contain information about what you did. Do not, instead, describe all the characteristics you had to allow you to do it. This is a cardinal mistake I often see in many personal statements. What do I mean by that? If you have been working at NASA on the Webb Space Telescope, you don’t want to say I was a hard worker and was well liked by everybody. Rather you would want to say I spent 1000 hours building the mirror for the telescope constantly correcting for mistakes to such a fine degree that the engineering societies considered it to be almost perfect. And to show you were well liked by everybody, you can say when you were done completing the telescope, NASA held a ticker tape parade for me!!! (Well, that’s probably not the case. But, hopefully, you get the idea.)

Final Paragraph

Time to sum up.

This can be the most difficult part of writing a personal statement (and blog too!) How do you tie everything together into a tight knot so that everything comes together and makes sense? Well, one thing you can write about is what you will bring to the table if your residency program selects you based on what you have stated in your radiology personal statement. Back to the Webb telescope example: Given my experience with my successful quest for perfection by creating an almost perfect telescope mirror, similarly, I plan to hone my skills to become an incredible radiologist by always learning from others and my fellow clinicians to get as close to perfection as possible.  Bottom line. You want to make sure to apply your experiences to the job that you want to get.

General Issues With Editing

1. I have learned a few things about writing over the past years, whether it is blogs, personal statements, letters, or whatever else you need to write. However, the most important is the obsessive need to review and re-review whatever you are writing for editing. It may take 100 edits to get it right!!!

2. Have a friend or a relative read your personal statement to catch errors you may not see. Your brain is trained to already know what you have written. Many times the only way to catch your own mistakes is to have another person read your writings.

3. Also, make sure to the read the personal statement out loud. Sometimes you can only detect errors by listening to what you have actually written. It happened many times when I edited my book Radsresident: A Guidebook For The Radiology Applicant And Radiology Resident

4. Finally, I recommend the use of grammar correcting programs. The one that I would like to bring to your attention is the program called Grammarly . I am an affiliate of Grammarly. However, that is only because I use the program myself for my blogs all the time. It has saved me from really stupid mistakes. One version is for free and corrects simple critical errors. The other uses more complex grammatical corrections and is a paid service. Regardless, either version will assist you in catching those silly errors. In addition, I usually paste my blogs into the Microsoft Word program to correct any other possible errors. I have found both programs to be complementary.

Other Useful Tidbits

Avoid too many i words.

When writing a radiology personal statement, try to reduce the usage of the word I for multiple reasons. First, it begins to sound very redundant. Second, you appear selfish. (It’s always about you, isn’t it?) And finally, you want to create the impression that you are going to be a team player, not in the field of radiology just for yourself.

Active Not Passive Tense

If you want a passage to sound great, make sure to almost always use the active tense, not the passive variety. When using the passive form, the reader has more work to do because he/she has to figure out who is doing the activity. In addition, the environment appears to control you rather than you controlling the environment. And finally, sentences sound more verbose when using the passive tense. Think about the following phrases: The job of creating a computer algorithm was completed over the course of 10 years vs. My colleagues and I created a computer algorithm over the course of 10 years. Which sounds better to you?

Use Sentence Transitions

If you want your personal statement to sound smooth, I find words other than the subject at the beginning of the sentence help to diversify the sound of the individual sentence. Also (notice this transition word!), it allows for a change of idea without being so abrupt.

Don’t Use The Same Word At The Beginning Of Each Sentence

In that same train of thought, try not to use the same word to begin a sentence over and over again. It’s a surefire way to bore the reader!!!

Now you know some of the rules I would utilize to create an interesting radiology personal statement. Some of these are general rules that I apply to my blog on a weekly basis that I also see in the best personal statements. Therefore, I know that they work well.
