Volunteer FAQ

Find a volunteer opportunity by visiting our Volunteer Opportunities page . Each individual volunteer opportunity lists information on how to get involved, including whether any preparation—such as signing forms or traveling to a specified location—is required. Volunteer opportunities are based on conservation needs and capacity. If the area in which you would like to volunteer is not listed, contact the TNC office directly to see what opportunities might be available. Volunteer opportunities may or may not be available with our projects in countries abroad; if you are interested in volunteering outside the United States, please contact our office in that region for more information. Additional questions? Contact Megan Whatton , Nature Allies Program Manager.

There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities available for individuals and groups in a variety of settings—both indoors and out. On TNC preserves and on our partner lands, volunteers play a key role in habitat restoration, species monitoring, leading tours, education and cultural programs, and more. In select cities, we work with multiple partners to support community action that comes in many forms such as planting trees, restoring green space and/or monitoring biodiversity, mitigating urban heat, or protecting water quality. Volunteers also provide support in our offices and lend their expertise on projects.

Most of our volunteer roles do not require prior experience. We value the many contributions beyond in-kind time volunteers provide, such as lived experiences, connections, community perspectives and passion. If training is required, it will be provided.

We are all part of this beautiful, living planet. Volunteering for nature is a way to give back in reciprocity and is an expression of gratitude to the natural world and all it provides for us. There are also many other benefits to volunteering for conservation:

  • Spending time outside in nature can also help improve your mental and physical health.
  • Volunteers learn about local nature and the conservation field, and they have the opportunity for personal growth while connecting with others in their community who want to make a difference.
  • Volunteers can earn community service hours or bring friends and family to bond in nature over shared experiences.
  • Some of our volunteer activities take place in areas not open to the general public, giving our valued volunteers access to otherwise closed preserves and natural areas.
  • Volunteers provide critical skills and expertise on our projects that improve the whole community. For example, on preserves and partner natural areas, volunteers are restoring and maintaining diverse habitats, making them resilient in the face of climate change impacts—helping people, plants, animals and other organisms adapt to warmer temperatures and extreme weather.

We welcome volunteers of all ages and abilities. Most of our volunteer opportunities are family friendly, but it’s always good to check first. Please connect with your local TNC office to find out more about the specific volunteer activities near you.

This work requires many hands (and hearts) and we welcome civic groups, scout groups, faith groups, corporate groups and others to help restore, monitor and care for nature. For example, groups may remove invasive plants, collect and sow native seeds, plant trees and more. Contact your local TNC office about opportunities to organize a group volunteer or community engagement activity.

Giving back to nature is not only fun, but an excellent way to earn community service hours and an opportunity to learn more about the conservation field. Our local staff will work with you to document time spent volunteering as additional credits or community service.

The volunteer coordinator will let you know if you need to bring any special items with you for your event. If you are going to be spending time at a preserve or natural area, it’s always a good idea to protect yourself from the elements and bring anything you might need to help you get the most from your experience. Suggested items may include:

  • Sunscreen and sunshields (like hats and long sleeves)
  • Extra water and snacks
  • Wet weather gear (such as boots and rain jackets)
  • Insect repellant
  • Sturdy shoes
  • Binoculars and/or a camera
  • Field guides, a compass or anything you’d bring while enjoying nature

Volunteer Square

The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) would not exist without the hundreds of volunteers that power our engines every day. Every volunteer is valued, enriches the organization, makes us more diverse and inclusive, and helps us advance our mission.

CEC has a variety of ways for members to get involved locally and nationally, and through short- and long-term projects. Read more about volunteer opportunities below, but to get started, complete your volunteer profile. We will make your profile available to Units and Divisions and contact you when projects align with your interests and skills.

Meet Some CEC Volunteers

Unit, Division, CEC International Opportunities

CEC is organized with several components that all need volunteers:

  • Units – CEC has units in most U.S. states and Canadian provinces. These local organizations coordinate training and networking opportunities, and each has its own leadership board. Volunteering with your Unit is an easy way to make connections and put your skills to use making an impact in your very own backyard.
  • Divisions – There are 18 special interest Divisions at CEC, each geared toward an area of work or role within special education. These are international organizations affiliated within CEC and are perfect for growing your skills with like-minded members. Divisions require many volunteers for both short- and long-term opportunities.
  • CEC International – CEC is led by a Board of Directors, many of whom have made their way through the ranks of Division and Unit leaders. However, helping keep CEC running are an abundance of short- and long-term volunteers who may spend a couple of hours on a project, such as reviewing proposals for a convention, or several hours per month serving on a committee or fulfilling a larger role.

Questions about volunteering? Contact Sharon Rodriguez , Director of Governance and Executive Services.

Presenter Interest Form

Are you interested in presenting for CEC's professional development programs, webinars, eLearning courses or contract trainings? Tell us about yourself and your areas of expertise using this form and you will be included in our directory for potential presentation opportunities.

If you are interested in presenting a session, workshop or keynote at the CEC Annual Convention & Expo, you can learn more about when the Call for Proposals will open at this link .

Board of Directors

The Board is the sole governing body of CEC and has the authority to determine annually the number of board members necessary to fulfill the mission of the organization. Applications are accepted annually (typically beginning in mid-March).

CEC has two types of committees: standing and advisory. Applications for committees are accepted at various times throughout the year based on the committee’s operating cycle.

Workgroups are established as needed by the Board of Directors to complete a specific charge within a designated period of time. Workgroup members have knowledge, experience, and expertise in a particular area of strategic importance to CEC.

"CEC volunteer opportunities are not only GREAT for a resume, but they create a personal sense of achievement for the field through your work. Volunteering for an organization that upholds, prioritizes and promotes its values to ensure that educators from around the country have the resources they need to make an impact on a local level with learners has made an incredible impact on my life and career. What better way to give back and shape the future of this tremendous organization?"

“Volunteering has opened me up to the wider world of special education outside of the classroom. In my five years as a CEC member and volunteer, I have learned so much about more about the field, expanded my professional network and career options, and met the most amazing teachers who have helped shaped the work I do today. Because of this, I have a reinvigorated appreciation and love for special education and the exceptional students we serve.”

United Way Day of Action

Our volunteers.

Each year on and around June 21, tens of thousands of people in hundreds of communities around the world come together for United Way's Day of Action. It's a global volunteering activity, where people can take a small step to make a big difference. For some, it’s stuffing backpacks full of books to encourage reading and improve early literacy. For others, it’s planting community gardens to foster civic pride and promote affordable, healthy eating. For United Way, Day of Action mirrors the work that we do all year long, building stronger, more equitable communities where everyone can thrive.

I thought to myself, I've been giving for years, but there's so much more to be done. So I picked up a paint brush, recruited my neighbors, and we worked to rebuild a community center. It was awesome. Jack E.

Volunteer Testimonies

My volunteer work at STEME has become one of the most fulfilling experiences that I have had in high school and has helped me grow in many aspects. I was able to strengthen various skills, such as strong communication, as I was given the opportunity to network with STEM-oriented individuals from different areas. Not only have I gained key social and networking skills as an intern, but I have also gained essential workplace and administrative skills that will help me academically and beyond.

My experience as a volunteer at STEME was amazing because my mentors were able to help hone many of my skills that were lacking prior to this program. This internship gave me advice on how to work proficiently so that I will be prepared for a future career. Also, the program created a professional environment where I was able to learn how to become more mature and grow necessary communication skills. Overall, the internship program was able to give me a proper head start and was very convenient with it being virtual and online.

Summer 2024 batch timeline

Ready to support a nonprofit, frequently asked questions.

We welcome applications from university students, or recent graduates with less than 2 years of any general full-time work experience. This includes students who are currently enrolled in or have graduated recently from Bachelor’s Degree, joint Bachelor/Master’s Degree, Master’s Degree, and PhD Degree programs, as well as bootcamp programs. We also welcome students who are on temporary leaves of absence from their universities (i.e. gap quarter/semester/year), in addition to international students. We're really passionate about helping college students and recent graduates who are just getting started with launching their careers, as they usually have little to no personal income and need to rely on free opportunities like ours. We ask folks with more than 2 years of general full-time work experience to consider signing up as an industry mentor instead; please refer to our Mentors page for more information!

Don't get us started on the chicken-and-egg problem with needing experience to get experience. We recognize that every pro developer or designer has once been in the position of seeking project experiences to refine their skills. Everyone starts somewhere. We see our opportunities as learning experiences, and encourage anyone interested in tech, design, and creating social impact to apply. Additionally, our team members come from a range of experiences, backgrounds, and majors. It’s definitely possible to be matched with a project even if you aren’t super technical, as we have projects that are more design thinking-focused.

Every student volunteer applicant is carefully evaluated by our management team. First, all candidates are scored across Technical, Passion, Resilience (and Leadership for manager applicants) categories. We generally expect students to have received at least classroom education and homework project experience in the type of product they want to work on. Across the categories, all candidates are assigned the average of scores given by two independent reviewers for fairness. After this evaluation, scored candidates are fed into our in-house matching algorithm. Our proprietary algorithm ensures that the most talented, passionate, and high-potential students are matched to projects that fit their technical skill sets and social impact interests. Each project team is composed of 1 Engineer or Design Manager, 1 Product Manager, and 4 Engineers or Designers. Additionally, each team is coached by 1 Team Mentor (an industry professional who will advise your team as a group throughout the program). In your student volunteer application, you can opt into receiving additional, personalized support from a 1:1 Mentor, who will meet with you individually to guide you on your own contributions to the project.

Students who don't initially get matched can opt into being added to our waitlist. If a spot on a project team opens up during the current batch, we'll reach out to the best suited candidate with an offer letter to join the team. All students accepted from the waitlist, regardless of when they join, will be given full credit as a contributing team member.

Yes. In terms of accessibility, all projects are virtual and can be worked on from anywhere in the world! Depending on your team, you may have to account for time zone differences when collaborating. International students on an F-1/OPT Visa should be free to engage in volunteer work at Develop for Good, a 501(c)3 nonprofit. If you have any additional concerns, we encourage you to reach out to your university’s center for international affairs.

Develop for Good is a challenging but rewarding experience. We push students to search for creative solutions in ambiguous environments where solutions may not be obvious. Sometimes, as often happens in industry, projects are blocked due to unexpected factors or circumstances that arise. To succeed, students must be radically proactive and become strong independent contributors, as well as collaborative team players. Although our internal resources, leadership, and mentors will be there to support you every step of the way, students like you are the ones who build the product and make the magic happen. And trust us; the challenge is well worth it. Many of Develop for Good's alumni have told us about using their project experiences to stand out in interviews and secure offers from some of the most competitive tech opportunities in the industry. If you're someone who enjoys rolling up their sleeves and exercising grit, this experience will be delightful for you.

Technical project experience. Hone your skills in product, engineering, and design with a multi-month tech project. Make real impact. Our nonprofit projects have reached millions of real lives across countries all over the world. Industry professional mentorship. Get personalized feedback on your contributions from a mentor dedicated to supporting you. A case study for your resume. Update your portfolio with proof of your impressive work. A recommendation letter. Receive a stellar referral from Develop for Good staff, or a satisfied client if they're willing. New friends. Team members often form genuine social relationships with each other. Soft skill development. Stand out in your next behavioral interview by working for a real client in a team. An intercollegiate network. Befriend talented fellow students from colleges everywhere. Develop for Good swag. Step aside, Balenciaga. Making sure our volunteers feel appreciated is very important to us! Special accolades & awards. [More info to come soon!] ‍

After prospective nonprofit clients submit proposals, our Product Leads manually screen them to ensure that projects utilize technologies students are familiar with and that there are no budgetary, legal, or ethical concerns. Clients are charged a $1,000 flat fee to participate in our program (all of which is invested back into sustaining Develop for Good as a nonprofit ourselves!). The project scoping phase begins in the first 4 out of 16 weeks. During this time, you and your project team will work with your nonprofit client to mutually decide on a tangible technical deliverable to be completed by the end of the program. There is a possibility the deliverable may not be exactly what the client initially described in their proposal, whether it's because your team identifies a a more optimal solution, or because your team determines only a phase of the larger product can be feasibly completed in the given time frame. Once a mutual agreement is met, new Product Requirements Documents and Statements of Work are signed by all participants before the project development phase begins. However, there is a possibility that your client might not agree with the deliverable recommended by your team during the project scoping period. If so, clients are given the option to withdraw from the program before the project development phase. If this happens, we'll try our best to re-match you and your fellow teammates to another nonprofit project suited for your skills and interests in the current or subsequent project batch.

We require a minimum time commitment of 5-10 hours/week for 16 weeks. Each week will involve a mandatory 1.5 hour weekly meeting with your team, nonprofit client, and Team Mentor. Weekly team meetings occur between Sunday - Tuesday. Student applicants are able to indicate which days/times they're available on the student volunteer application. Students who opt into 1:1 Mentorship will meet with their 1:1 Mentors for an additional 30 minutes every week. 1:1 meetings occur between Thursday - Saturday. Mentee applicants are able to indicate which days/times they're available on the student volunteer application. Additional ad-hoc sync-ups may be scheduled by the team on an as-needed basis. Outside of meetings, the rest of the time is dedicated to completing technical work asynchronously. We also expect students to acknowledge or confirm receipt of messages on a timely basis (within 48 hours during the weekdays). The success of the project depends heavily on everyone's ability to respond quickly and communicate clearly and effectively. Although we understand that students may be juggling an internship or coursework throughout this period, we expect students to consider their Develop for Good role as one of their top priorities. Our opportunities are extremely competitive, and we rigorously enforce commitment expectations and standards. If you are interested but are unsure of whether you have the bandwidth in the upcoming batch, please consider applying for a future batch!

Yes! At Develop for Good, we believe strongly in equality of opportunity. The Develop for Good Fellows program is an initiative that was formed to remove financial barriers faced by underserved and underrepresented U.S. college students who otherwise would be unable to participate in our student volunteer opportunities. We’re dedicated to making our hands-on project experiences accessible to all, and launched this initiative to reflect our priorities in diversity, equity, and inclusion. We typically post a standalone Fellows application in our channels partway through the active project batch. Although we cannot guarantee that every eligible student will receive a grant due to our funding limitations, selected recipients are notified and administered a $500 unrestricted grant shortly after the conclusion of the ongoing cohort.

Demo Day is a public virtual celebration of the work you and your team complete for your nonprofit client. It's a day of showcasing projects, networking with peers and partners, and recognizing stellar teams with additional accolades sponsored by partners. More details to come!

If you're interested in contributing to one of our division-specific roles, please email Mary Zhu at [email protected]. We have open roles for our in-house Design, Technology, Data, Marketing, Finance, and Programs teams. These positions do not require prior engagement with Develop for Good. Volunteer with the smithsonian.

Smithsonian volunteers play essential roles in sharing our rich collections, exhibitions, research, and educational programming with the public. We are always on the lookout for dynamic, curious individuals who want to be a part of the Smithsonian team. Each year, more than 6,000 volunteers work onsite at our facilities and another 7,500 participate in projects online.

Volunteering at the Smithsonian

- [Narrator] Would you like to operate a panda cam, lead museum tours, or help restore historic spacecraft?

Become a volunteer at the largest museum, education, and research complex in the world, the Smithsonian Institution.

Volunteering has been an essential part of the Smithsonian's mission since the Institution was established in 1846.

In fact, the Smithsonian began with a selfless act of philanthropy when British scientist, James Smithson, left his estate to the United States government to create "an establishment for the increase "and diffusion of knowledge."

In 1855, workers completed the first Smithsonian Institution building, what we refer to today as the Castle on the National Mall.

Over the course over the next 160 years, the Smithsonian continued to expand, adding museums, galleries, research centers, and even a zoo.

2016 saw our most recent addition, the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

From the beginning, our volunteers have helped us accomplish amazing things.

The Smithsonian's first volunteers were 600 citizen scientists who provided monthly weather reports from North and South America during the 1850s.

Soon after, volunteers across the country collected plants, animals, and minerals, essentially crowdsourcing the Smithsonian's early natural history collections, some of which are still on display today. Years later, volunteers helped track satellites during the early days of the Space Race.

Today, the Smithsonian has over 13,000 volunteers. That's twice the number of employees. There are countless volunteer opportunities in nearly every one of the Smithsonian's 19 museums, 12 gardens, nine research centers, and the National Zoo. For example, volunteers conserve our collections, maintain our gardens, feed hungry tarantulas, and much, much more.

Oh, and did we mention that volunteers receive great benefits? Well, they do, such as discounts at Smithsonian museum stores, free IMAX tickets, and access to our libraries. Applying to become a Smithsonian volunteer couldn't be easier.

Interested candidates need to complete an online application and undergo a routine background check.

You're then invited to explore our many volunteer opportunities and discover the right one for you.

So, what are you waiting for?

Become part of a long and proud tradition of service.

Join our team today.

We invite you to explore our many volunteer opportunities, and to discover the right one for you.

Volunteering

Without volunteers to rely on, it is hard to imagine how the public health industry could fulfill its mission. The impact of volunteerism goes far beyond the doctors and nurses who volunteer their time and expertise to free clinics. Many people who want to help others do not need health care experience to support efforts like educating the public about health and safety issues, answering phones at clinics and health hotlines, or delivering meals to seniors.

As busy as life can be, it can seem hard to find the time to volunteer. This guide will help you gain an informed perspective on volunteering. Below we cover the social and economic impact of volunteers and the personal benefits of volunteering.

We include information about volunteer opportunities in the public health industry as well as many other areas of society. Take note of the key points to consider in your decision to volunteer, then check out the resources we highlighted to help you start your search for the organization that best matches your interests and schedule.

Making a difference, economic impact.

A report by the Points of Light Institute states that if volunteers were paid for the services they freely offer, the wages would amount to between $113 billion and $161 billion a year. The report also asserts that, in 2009, 63.4 million American volunteers donated 8.1 billion hours of service, amounting to $169 billion worth of work.

Finally, the report cites research by the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies, which found that about 140 million people in 37 countries volunteer their services to the equivalent of 20.8 million full-time jobs, contributing about $400 billion to the global economy.

Social Impact

Volunteering plays a key role in strengthening our society by acting as a bridge between socioeconomic divides. On a community level, the organization you become a part of is likely to collaborate in social networks with other volunteer organizations and local governments, providing services that help build a cohesive society.

For corporations, volunteering is a key part of promoting socially responsible business practices by tying in business decisions with respect for the community and the environment. Socially responsible corporations like to be known for founding or supporting philanthropic programs, using eco-friendly materials and manufacturing processes, and encouraging their employees to better their communities.

Employee-based volunteer programs strengthen a company’s relationship with its employees by promoting teamwork and encouraging open communication. These programs also firm up the relationship between a business and its surrounding community.

How You Can Benefit

Why do people volunteer? Many people are motivated by selflessness, the desire to feel good, or the need to assuage guilt. Some want to demonstrate their commitment to a cause, while others may be looking for a new challenge to keep themselves busy or simply want to feel needed in some way. Students are often required to log a certain number of volunteer hours as a requirement for admission into a rigorous program.

On a personal level, volunteering has been shown to deliver benefits such as improved social skills, social recognition, higher self-esteem and better health.

Resume Building

Volunteering in activities that strengthen the community can provide you with opportunities to explore new career paths, gain job-related skills, develop leadership abilities and network with community and business leaders. If you are a recent college graduate, looking for a job, or changing careers, volunteering is a great way to gain experience in a new field or “test drive” a new career without having to make a long-term commitment.

Volunteering is a great way to gain experience before beginning a job hunt. Doing so is one of the best way to avoid holes in the timeline of your resume. And beyond that, volunteer experience speaks volumes about your commitment to your community and your drive to be productive. It can also lead to professional networking and career enhancement opportunities, meeting and connecting with like-minded individuals.

Volunteering could be your entry point into organizations or internships that could advance your career. According to a report from The Corporation for National and Community Service, volunteers are 27 percent more likely to find a job than non-volunteers. The report also found that volunteers without a high school diploma are 51 percent more likely to find a job, and volunteers living in rural areas are 55 percent more likely to be employed.

Health and Wellbeing

A review of recent research by the Corporation for National and Community Service, titled The Health Benefits of Volunteering , cites data from the Americans’ Changing Lives Survey . The report shows that volunteers experience greater life satisfaction and overall better health than non-volunteers. It asserts that the more time older individuals spend volunteering, the more their life satisfaction and health improve. Those who spend about 100 hours per year volunteering show signs of positive health changes. Furthermore, Research by the University of Exeter indicates that volunteers have a greater ability to cope with stress, greater resilience for recovering from health problems, lower rates of depression, and longer, happier lives.

These results are further bolstered by data from the Longitudinal Study of Aging which found that people who volunteer have lower mortality rates than non-volunteers, even when the data is adjusted to exclude physical health factors. According to the study, 16 percent of participants 70 years or older who volunteered in 1984 were less likely to have died by 1988 than people who did not volunteer.

Other studies have found that people who volunteer at younger ages are less likely to suffer from ill health later in life. A comparison of data collected from interviews of women in 1956 and then in 1986 found that those who had volunteer experience from the time they were married until age 55 had greater functional ability than non-volunteers. The volunteers were also more likely to be integrated socially in their communities.

An analysis of adults over the age of 70 who volunteered at least 100 hours during 1993 found that, by the year 2000, had higher levels of functional ability and lower levels of depression and mortality than people who did not volunteer during the same period.

The positive impact on the health of volunteers contributes to an overall positive impact on quality of life. Those who give more of themselves reap the benefits of knowing they are doing good, and many opportunities have a physical component that tell the brain that real work has been done. This also translates to what sociologists call “ social integration theory ” which seeks to explain how social connections provide meaning in one’s life. Social integration is not assimilation. Rather, it is the process by which individuals find a place within a group and peacefully blend with the community. This might help to explain why those who pursue philanthropic endeavors display a higher sense of self-worth. They feel as if their time is well-spent, and they believe they are leaving a good legacy.

Key Considerations

The most important thing to realize about volunteering is that spending time to identify your goals and interests helps ensure a richer and more fulfilling volunteer experience. Ask yourself why you want to volunteer. For example, do you want to:

  • Make your neighborhood a better place to live
  • Learn from people who think about life differently than you
  • Try something you’ve never done before
  • See new places and a different way of life
  • Make a positive contribution with your hobbies or interests

Essentials for Successful Volunteering

Compassion, humility, an open mind, and a positive attitude ensure a positive volunteer experience. You have the best chance for making a valuable contribution if you:

  • Strive to be well-prepared and organized
  • Are emotionally stable
  • Are a good listener
  • Are self-reliant, adaptable and resilient
  • Are patient and cooperative
  • Have a passion for sharing your knowledge and skills

The Time Commitment

If you are a first time volunteer, short-term assignments will provide the best chance to see if the work is right for you. Short-term volunteering is especially valuable if you can make up for an acute shortage of help by providing expertise not otherwise found at the organization. Keep in mind that short-term commitments are not cost effective for organizations that must make a considerable investment in screening, transporting or housing for their volunteers. When you find the right volunteer program, serving for a longer term gives you the opportunity to develop a higher level of skill and accomplish more.

Finding the Right Opportunity

Your time is your most valuable asset, so it is important that your volunteer position is a good fit. As you investigate opportunities, do not limit yourself to a single organization or a specific type of work. Although an opportunity may look great on paper, the reality can be quite different. Keep a few things in mind when looking for the right community service program:

  • Know what is expected.
  • Understand the time commitment.
  • Visit different organizations.
  • Introduce yourself to the staff and fellow volunteers.
  • Ask questions to ensure the experience fits your goals, skills, and available time.
  • Make sure you can enjoy yourself

Local Opportunities

Volunteering is the easiest way to make a positive impact in your community. Here are some of the most common opportunities in public health available at the local level:

  • At the hospital: Help is always needed in hospitals, and they all welcome volunteers. You could be asked to perform a wide variety of duties, from greeting families to delivering flowers. Most local hospitals could use the help of weekly volunteers to supplement their staffs’ duties, while national hospitals, like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital , provide opportunities for anyone nationwide to contribute to their work.
  • At hospice: Volunteers for hospices are always needed for patients on Medicare and Medicaid, which require volunteers to provide a minimum of 5 percent of patient care hours . Be advised that volunteering for hospice can be an emotionally draining experience, but you may become a very important person a family can rely on. The National Hospice Foundation provides a search tool to find local hospices that may need your time and help.
  • As a mentor: Volunteer to make a difference in a child’s future. Organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters are great outlets for mentoring. Expect a background check. United Way provides a list of volunteer opportunities in your area on their website.
  • At the shelter: It takes a lot of volunteers to operate a local shelter. Consider donating, delivering, serving, or preparing food, or helping with administrative tasks. The Homeless Shelter Directory makes it easy to find a shelter near you that could use an extra pair of hands.
  • At school: Teachers are often underpaid, and schools are often understaffed. Volunteers are always needed for fun, rewarding assignments, such as reading to children, chaperoning field trips, or simply helping with lessons. Expect a background check. Communities in Schools works with low-performing schools in 26 states and the District of Columbia to provide them with the resources they need to succeed. You can find which states and schools are part of this program through their state list .
  • As a delivery driver: Most communities sponsor a “ Meals on Wheels ” service, where volunteers deliver meals to the elderly. Offering nutritious meals and companionship to people who are often very lonely is an especially rewarding way to volunteer.
  • At the animal shelter: If you love animals, your local animal shelter is always looking for volunteers willing to walk dogs, take care of the animals and help find new homes. The Humane Society makes it easy to find volunteer opportunities in their shelters nationwide.
  • On the highway: Check with your state’s DOT to learn the requirements for adopting a highway in your area, or you can peruse the official Adopt a Highway website for more information. Typically volunteers work to clean up litter or plant flowers and trees.
  • At the community garden: Community gardens offer a bounty of fresh produce, and they are a great way to meet new people and strengthen neighborhood ties.

National and International Opportunities

Compared to volunteering in your community, national and global volunteer opportunities typically require longer time commitments, sometimes up to a year or more. Organizations usually provide a living stipend and may cover travel and other expenses. Be aware that some programs operating on this scale require volunteers to assume some of the costs associated with serving.

Volunteers in national services help millions of vulnerable citizens by doing everything from helping veterans adjust to civilian life to rebuilding communities reeling from natural disasters. A prime example is AmeriCorps, which fields an army of more than 80,000 Americans who offer their services to nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based groups across the country.

Globally, the Peace Corps offers volunteers with a thirst for adventure a chance to make a difference around the world. Be advised that the decision to volunteer for the Peace Corps involves considerable research and evaluation. In general, volunteer opportunities in the Peace Corps involve education, youth development, health care, community economic development, agriculture and the environment.

In addition to being self-reliant, you need the technical experience and education required by a host country to be selected as a Peace Corps volunteer . Serving also requires additional preparation with language, cross-cultural and project-specific training.

Volunteering Resources

Volunteerism begins at the local level, and most of the good work done by those wanting to help others is coordinated by local organizations or local offices of national organizations. If you have a particular field in mind, it’s easy to find the contact information for local coordinators online.

On a national level, the websites listed below can be a good place to start your process of researching, evaluating and selecting the volunteer opportunity that is right for you.

  • Big Brothers/Big Sisters : Its mission is to change the lives of children facing adversity for the better with professionally supported one-to-one relationships with adult volunteers.
  • Corporation for National and Community Service : The largest grantmaker for service and volunteering in the U.S. The CNCS engages more than 5 million Americans in service through its core programs: Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and the Social Innovation Fund.
  • Habitat for Humanity : An international, non-governmental, nonprofit organization that describes itself as a Christian housing ministry devoted to addressing the problem of poverty housing worldwide.

  • Peace Corps : The Peace Corps sends American volunteers abroad to work at the grassroots level toward sustainable change, with the aim to enrich the lives of both the volunteers and the communities they serve.
  • Peterson’s : An education resource company offering valuable information about how to connect with volunteer and internship opportunities in public health.
  • Points of Light Foundation : An organization dedicated to connecting people with volunteer opportunities that address critical needs in communities.
  • United We Serve : United We Serve is an initiative working to expand the impact of existing organizations by engaging new volunteers in their work and encouraging them to develop their own projects.
