Now streaming on:

Let’s say you want to watch “Adipurush,” a new Indian mythological action-fantasy, without thinking so much about what came before it. You want to enter the theater with as little baggage as possible, despite the associations that come with the marquee-topping Prabhas, star of both S.S. Rajamouli’s trend-setting “Baahubali” period action fantasies. Maybe you want to see a great adaptation of The Ramayana , or the most commonly adapted parts of that Sanskrit language epic poem, where the arrow-slinging god Raghava, also known as Ram (Prabhas), rescues his kidnapped wife Sita, or Janaki ( Kriti Sanon ) from the evil multi-headed god Lankesh/Ravana (Saif Ali Khan ).

“Adipurush” just opened here in America, but it’s already controversial in India, where the writers of trend pieces, interviews, and reviews consider the implications of Lankesh’s appearance , including his weird nu-metal gel-spiked haircut , which has led to some comparisons to the Muslim leader Alauddin Khilji. Sanon’s casting as Sita has also led to outrage and,  unfortunately, effective demands for censorship . ( Some outspoken protesters don’t like that Sanon, the actress playing Sita, “India’s Daughter,” has danced suggestively in earlier movies.)

Is it possible to see, let alone enjoy, such an archetypal story without making too many distracting comparisons, either to other movies or real-life politics? Or are those associations simultaneously the biggest draw and problem for “Adipurush,” whose Sanskrit title can be read as “ First Man ,” and whose considerable budget (Rs 500 crore, or about $67 million) allegedly surpasses all prior Indian mega-productions? Honestly, the movie’s rough computer graphics might eclipse all other considerations since there’s so much bad green-screen image-compositing in “Adipurush,” and it all looks cheap and uninspired.

Your mileage may vary, but slapdash and tacky-looking special effects make the first hour (or more) of “Adipurush” feel interminable. Here in Manhattan’s Union Square theater, at a packed Thursday afternoon matinee, the raucous screams of Prabhas’ fans soon faded after his triumphant first scene, when Raghava almost single-handedly dispatches a horde of demonic wraiths. It took a moment to hear the auditorium’s silence beneath the movie’s typically bombastic soundtrack, but it was eventually glaring. “Adipurush” has been pre-sold to viewers based on what they already know: how can you go wrong by adapting a popular epic featuring superheroic Hindu gods, uncanny valley animal-people, and monstrous villains? Well, have you seen any good Marvel movies lately?

Recent complaints from frustrated employees of Marvel’s visual effects studios make it easier to understand why an SFX-driven event title like “Adipurush” could cost so much and still look so bad. It’s harder to understand how the makers of this movie could be satisfied with key establishing scenes, like when Janaki swoons as she and Raghava are romantically encircled by a flock of poorly-rendered pink flamingos.

Some musical numbers, especially the ones featuring Janaki and Lankesh, also suffer from dramatic inertia given that so much of the characters’ movements only highlight computer graphics that make the theatrical cut of “ Justice League ” look polished. There’s the ersatz and seemingly literally-translated poetry of the song lyrics and expository dialogue. And then there are the totally bogus visual effects that make everything, especially the uninflected facial expressions of a normally generous ensemble cast, look like video game cut scenes. "Adipurush" has layers of problems, in other words, though it’s hard to imagine that most viewers will be able to squint past the movie’s unreflective surface problems.

There’s some hope in the end, but only if you’re inclined to see “Adipurush” as one of a few trend-chasers, whose many generic elements call back to everything, including HBO’s “Game of Thrones” series, Peter Jackson ’s original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and yes, Rajamouli’s “Baahubali” two-parter. Scenes featuring the pure-hearted simian god Bajrang/Hanuman ( Devdatta Nage ) also shamelessly crib from the recent Andy Serkis-led, motion-capture-focused “Planet of the Apes” movies. The derivative nature of these oft-cribbed elements doesn’t matter as much as this movie’s dramatically flat-footed presentation, which only sometimes picks up during the big showdown between Raghava, Lankesh, and their respective armies.

“Adipurush” only really feels like a movie that was directed and not just covered during its slowly escalating finale, which pits Raghava, his brother Sesh/Laxmana (Sunny Singh), and Bajrang against Lankesh and his superhumanly fast second-in-command, Indrajit ( Vatsal Sheth ). Some of us looked forward to “Adipurush” because it was directed by Om Raut , whose “Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior” also pulled itself together during splashy, climactic battle scenes. “Adipurush” still looks rough and moves gracelessly even during slow-motion battles, but at least the narrow focus of these concluding scenes gives the movie some dramatic tension.

It’s hard to otherwise imagine a moviegoer who, just looking at what’s presented in “Adipurush,” will be satisfied by this underwhelming spectacle. Everybody on-screen swims about a vast computer-generated wasteland lost in maxi-sized roles that dwarf their singular qualities. Everything is big here, but nothing looks grand.

Pathetic movie. The movie is far away from the actual story of Ramayana. The director seems to be more influenced by Harry Potter, game of thrones, planet of apes rather than depict the actual story of Ramayana. Ramayana the great epic have been brought down to a fantasy movie. What were the creators thinking to tell the audience. Disappointment.

Even then, Adipurush lacks ingenuity. This is saying something because the outing (mounted on a staggering budget of Rs 500 crores) stands on visual effects. But like most Hindi films the VFX is shaky and even jarring

Even if one were to somehow shut one’s senses to the film’s intent, Raut’s adaptation of the Hindu mythological epic, Ramayan, is one of the most tacky, perplexing and derivative attempts.

Adipurush is a spectacle for all the wrong reasons. Viewers will be watching to see if the tacky visual effects and idiotic plot can get any worse. They do. And at three hours long, this bombastic and mind-numbing fantasy film becomes an endurance test.

Western audiences looking to experience an original Indian blockbuster will instead be confronted with a cheap, Z-grade facsimile of better Hollywood films.

Ramayana is a much revered epic and shouldn't be treated like LOTR. It has much to teach but its themes of sacrifice, brotherhood and love aren't brought to the forefront here in their full glory.

It reduces Ramayan to a two-dimensional barrage of little feeling.

Full Review | Original Score: 1.5/5 | Jun 16, 2023

It won't be wrong to call Adipurush one of the most audacious projects made in recent times, but just like Brahmastra, it goes overboard at several places and loses the essence that you would expect to feel in an epic mythological tale.

adipurush movie review usa

Despite the dramatic buildup, the climax doesn't live you with that sense of joy, reward or victory. This one’s a sincere attempt that gets a tad overwhelmed by its ambition of handling a story of this magnitude.

A dull and unimaginative take on the Ramayana...

Adipurush movie review and release Live Updates: Prabhas films marks the biggest opening of 2023, earns Rs 140 crore

Adipurush movie release live updates: the prabhas starrer is out in cinemas. the film got a good response during its advance booking and is looking forward to break the record set by pathaan this year..

adipurush movie review usa

Adipurush , the much-awaited film of Telugu superstar Prabhas, has hit theaters across the world. The mythological drama is a retelling of the Hindu epic, Ramayan. In the film, helmed by Om Raut, Prabhas plays Lord Ram, Kriti Sanon stars as Sita, Sunny Singh is Lakshman and Saif Ali Khan plays the role of Ravan.

The film is made on an enormous budget of Rs 500 crore. After its advance bookings opened on Sunday, the film did a business of Rs 12 crore. The national theatre chain PVR sold over one lakh tickets in the Hindi market itself and trade analysts are expecting a huge opening at the ticket counters across the country.

adipurush movie review usa

Film trade analyst Girish Johar pegged the film’s opening day collection at Rs 50 cr, including all languages. Speaking about the craze around Ramayan among Indians, film trade expert Taran Adarsh said, “For me, the most important thing is not Prabhas, Kriti Sanon or Saif Ali Khan . For me, it is Ramayan, and it is a very strong emotion. Everything else is secondary,” he states, while agreeing that many Indians watching the film will resonate with his emotion.” New reports suggested that the first day collection can be even higher, and may eclipse Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Pathaan’s first day collection.

Adipurush is the story of Lord Ram, whose wife Sita was kidnapped by the evil Ravana. He took the help of the vanara army and brought her back with him to Ayodhya. Kriti recently opened up about portraying the role of Janaki (Sita) in the retelling of Ramayana. She said that the scale and magnitude of Om Raut’s directorial is massive and the film is going to be a “visually spectacular experience” for the audience. However, she also shared that she used to jokingly tell the director that she’s shooting for her “biggest film on the smallest set,” as the entire film is shot in a studio.

Saif Ali Khan attended Adipurush screening with Ibrahim Ali Khan and Taimur Ali Khan.

Twitter user @Sherryinwords shared opinion after watching Adipurush, "Despite some irksome dialogue writing? Watch #Adipurush as a movie! A mythological story showcased on the big screen with its own creative take? It's fine to watch it. Nothing comes perfect! Not even a movie. There will always be something missing or disliked. POV matters!"

A Twitter user lauded Saif Ali Khan's performance as Ravana in Adipurush. The tweet read, "Saif Ali Khan's portrayal of Raavan in #Adipurush is a visual treat! The attention to detail in his look, from the intricate costumes to the fierce makeup, is commendable. This is going to be epic! ?#TheBestRaavanSaif"

The Nepal release of Indian mythological epic film Adipurush remains uncertain after Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah’s call on Thursday to impose a ban on all Hindi films after taking objection to a line of dialogue in the film. Mayor Shah said that the producers of Adipurush, an adaptation of the Ramayana starring Prabhas as Lord Ram, includes a line of dialogue in which Sita is described as ‘daughter of India’.  He wrote on social media that Sita is considered the daughter of Nepal. These will provide understanding of cultural significance associated with #Ramayana. #Adipurush may not be the ideal Ramayana adaptation for children.  It is important for parents to clarify that it's just a regular film with impressive visuals."

The Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta gave Adipurush a one-and-a-half star rating. She wrote in her review, "Om Raut’s version of Ramayan is a series of clunky CGI, bathed in Bollywoodese. This version of the Ramayan is not interested in connecting with the feeling of genuine religiosity that any reading of the ‘granth’ arouses, whether it is the most popular Tulsidas version or the Valmiki version."

In an interview with Dainik Bhaskar, Devdatta Nage, who plays Hanuman in Adipurush, said, 'It was a different experience on Adipurush for all of us than normal films. In order to imbibe the relation that existed between Lord Shri Ram and Bajrangbali, I used to feel the form of Lord Ram in Prabhas. For Prabhas, that feeling used to come automatically. I used to sit on the sets with the rest of the cast. But as soon as Prabhas used to come from anywhere, I would automatically stand up and become alert. He repeatedly asked me to sit, but I could not do that at all. There is a scene in the trailer where Lord Shri Ram and Anjani's son Hanuman meet. There Hanuman's eyes have an emotional expression. There is a stream of tears from his eyes. Believe me my eyes were actually moist while giving that shot. Because I also met Prabhas in the same spirit. Adipurush Review: A Visually Stunning Epic

Adipurush Prabhas Kriti Senon Movie Review Advance Booking Box Office

Adipurush is a 2023’s much awaited epic mythological drama released on 16th June 2023. The film made by talented director Om Raut. In the film, Prabhas has played the role of Lord Rama, Kriti Senon as Sita, Sunny Singh as Lakshman and Saif Ali Khan as Ravana. The film’s runtime is 2 hours and 59 minutes. Adipurush shot in Hindi and Telugu and dubbed in Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.

Adipurush Review

Adipurush is a visually stunning film with some impressive action sequences. The performances are also strong, with Prabhas and Saif Ali Khan particularly good. Kriti Senon should be praised for her beauty, grace, strength, and her portrayal of Sita as a “real” woman. Kriti’s performance is one of the highlights of the film, and it is sure to be remembered for years to come. However, the film is let down by its slow pace and over-reliance on CGI.

Plot: The film tells the story of Lord Rama, a righteous and compassionate prince who is exiled from his kingdom after his stepmother plots to dethrone him. Rama travels to the forest with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, where they encounter the demon king Ravana. Ravana kidnaps Sita and Rama sets out to rescue her. Along the way, he must face many challenges, including Ravana’s powerful army.

Direction: Om Raut’s direction is one of the strongest aspects of Adipurush. He has a clear vision for the film and he executes it masterfully. The film is visually stunning, with some of the best cinematography ever seen in an Indian film. The action sequences are also well-choreographed and exciting. Raut also does a good job of balancing the film’s epic scope with its intimate character moments.

Screenplay: The screenplay of Adipurush is written by Om Raut. It is a faithful adaptation of the Ramayana, but it also puts a new spin on the story. The film is well-paced and it does a good job of balancing the film’s action, drama, and romance. The characters are well-developed and the dialogue is sharp.

Acting: The acting in the film is also very good. Prabhas is excellent as Rama, bringing a sense of strength and nobility to the role. Kriti Sanon is also good as Sita, bringing a sense of innocence and vulnerability to the role. Saif Ali Khan is also good as Ravana, bringing a sense of evil and menace to the role.

Cinematography: Palani Karthik’s cinematography is another highlight of Adipurush. He captures the film’s epic scale and beauty with stunning visuals. The film is full of memorable shots, such as the aerial shots of Lanka and the battle sequences. Karthik also does a great job of capturing the film’s emotional moments, such as the scenes between Rama and Sita.

Special Effects: The special effects in the film are also very good. The film’s battle sequences are particularly impressive. The film also does a good job of incorporating CGI into the film without it feeling too artificial.

Music: The music of Adipurush is composed by Ajay-Atul and Sachet–Parampara. The songs are catchy and memorable, and they perfectly complement the film’s epic story. The film’s background score is also excellent, and it helps to create a sense of excitement and grandeur.

Here is a more detailed look at the film’s positives and negatives:

  • Visually stunning:  The film is beautifully shot and the sets and costumes are impressive.
  • Impressive action sequences:  The film has some well-choreographed action sequences, particularly the battle between Rama and Ravana.
  • Strong performances:  Prabhas and Saif Ali Khan give particularly good performances.
  • Slow pace:  The film is slow-paced and can be quite boring at times.
  • Over-reliance on CGI:  The film relies too heavily on CGI, which can be distracting at times.
  • Unnecessary changes to the story:  The film makes some unnecessary changes to the Ramayana story, which may disappoint you.

This portrayal of Ravana is refreshing and thought-provoking. It challenges the traditional view of Ravana as a simple villain and forces us to see him as a complex character with both good and bad qualities. This makes the film more interesting and engaging, and it also makes the film’s message of good versus evil more powerful.

Overall, Adipurush is a well-made film with a good message. It is not without its flaws, but it is a worthwhile watch for fans of Indian epic films.

Adipurush Rating

Adipurush has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. Some have praised the film’s visual effects, action sequences, and performances, while others have criticized its slow pacing, predictable plot, and lack of character development.

On IMDb , Adipurush has a 6.5/10 rating based on over 10,000 user ratings. The site’s users have given the film a positive rating of 78%.

Overall, Adipurush is a mixed bag. It has some strong points, such as its visual effects and action sequences, but it also has some weaknesses, such as its slow pacing and predictable plot. Ultimately, whether or not you enjoy the film will depend on your individual preferences.

Adipurush Movie Review: ADIPURUSH is a wellmade entertainer with a bigscreen appeal.

Adipurush is a well-made entertainer with a big-screen appeal., adipurush review {3.5/5} & review rating.

ADIPURUSH , inspired from the Ramayana, is the story of Lord Rama rescuing Mata Sita from the evil Ravana. Raghav ( Prabhas ), the prince of Ayodhya, is sent on a 14-year  vanvas (exile). He’s accompanied by his wife Janki ( Kriti Sanon ) and brother Shesh (Sunny Singh). One day, while Raghav is roaming in the forest, he meets Shurpankha (Tejaswini Pandit). She falls for him and proposes marriage. Raghav respectfully declines and informs her that he's already married. Shurpankha is unable to bear the truth and she harms Janki. In retaliation, Shesh cuts her nose. She goes back to her kingdom, Lanka, and complains about it to her brother, King Lankesh (Saif Ali Khan). Lankesh decides to exact revenge. He kidnaps Janki and keeps her hostage in the Ashok Vatika in the palace complex. Raghav is devastated and he decides to head to Lanka to rescue Janki and defeat Lankesh. He’s helped by the Vaanar Raja Sugriva (voiced by Gaurrav Walia) and Lord Bajrang (Devdatta G Nage) in this historic battle. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Movie Review: Adipurush

ADIPURUSH is based on the epic, Ramayana. Om Raut's adapted story is a classic. Clearly Om Raut, as a new generation film maker, and back with the accolades of his 2020 super hit film TANHAJI: THE UNSUNG WARRIOR, is driven to tell his eternal tale to a younger audience, that has grown up to VFX films and Super hero franchises from the likes of Marvel etc. To celebrate our own stories is not just laudable but indeed commendable for any storyteller. Some of the scenes are well thought out and interpreted. He also keeps the narrative simplified. However, one feels that Manoj Muntashir Shukla's dialogues could have been more impactful. The only dialogue that stands out is Raghav’s speech before the climax battle.

Om Raut's direction is first-rate. He doesn’t rush through the narrative and takes his time to build the characters and the world in which the film is set in. The film is a visual spectacle and the way he has handled the grandeur is seen to be believed. The 3D effects also are nicely done. The use of the song  ‘Jai Shree Ram’  is praiseworthy and it enhances the impact.

On the flipside, the second half gets dragging. The climax fight goes on and on and makes viewers restless. Some of the CGI could have been better, knowing well that comparisons would be drawn to international films. You can make out that the film maker is keen to establish his own narrative of this tale and hence the dialogues too have perhaps been contemporised.

ADIPURUSH starts on a lovely note. The visuals in the song  'Ram Siya Ram'  are beautiful and the makers smartly and briefly explain the context and background and begin the story straight away from the  vanvas  track. Lankesh’s entry is superb and so is the song  'Shivoham' . To show Lankesh’s statues singing the song is cinematic brilliance. The first half is lengthier than the second half and yet, it is impactful. Some of the scenes that stand out in the first half are Lankesh kidnapping Janki, Raghav meeting Shabari, Bajrang’s entry, Bajrang meeting Raghav for the first time, Sugriva and Vaali’s fight and the intermission point. Post-interval, the film falls in certain scenes. The  ‘sanjeevni booti’  episode and Raghav’s speech are memorable sequences in this hour.

FDFS Public Review : Adipurush Ft. Prabhas | Kriti Sanon | Sunny Singh | Devdatta Nage

Speaking of performances, Prabhas is the apt choice for such a divine role. However, we feel that the expectation of the larger Indian public for this role was perhaps much more. The dilemma of a nation having grown up to this tale and have some of it repeated on television during the pandemic brings a strange conflict of what the audience wants to see or hear as opposed to a more modern rendition of the story the film maker wants to present. Kriti Sanon looks beautiful and gives a decent performance. Saif Ali Khan tries to give his best but is limited to some extent due to the VFX in his scenes and the execution. Om had extracted a wonderful performance from his earlier film and this role could have been another feather in his cap. Devdatta G Nage is impressive. But his dialogues though could have had more reverence and substance. Sunny Singh is fair. Siddharth Kiran Karnick (Vibhishan), Vatsal Seth (Indrajit), Tejaswini Pandit and Ayesha Madhukar (Maya) are okay. Sonal Chauhan (Mandodari) is wasted.

Ajay-Atul's music is one of the film’s USPs.  'Jai Shri Ram'  is like the film’s anthem and has an exhilarating effect.  'Ram Siya Ram'  (by Sachet-Parampara) is soulful.  'Shivoham'  is well-tuned and shot.  'Tu Hai Sheetal Dhaara'  makes for a nice watch.  'Huppa Huiya'  is missing from the film. Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara's background score is energetic.

Karthik Palani's cinematography is spectacular. Nachiket Barve's costumes are appealing and in sync with the era shown in the film. Priya Suhass and Nishant Jogdand's production design is rich but perhaps contrasting to the viewer’s expectation in the scenes of Lanka. Ramazan Bulut and Pradyumna Kumar Swain's action is family-friendly and entertaining. VFX in today’s environment of movie making is integral and a style or format may appeal to many and yet one will have sceptics as the sheer possibilities are endless. While it’s terrific in some scenes, there areas scenes where there could have been scope for improvement. The conflict of telling an age old eternal tale in a more modern and contemporary style will always draw multiple views. Some will see glimpses of inspiration even from films like THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Since the film was always marketed as the eternal tale of Lord Rama and the conquest of good over evil, it remains to be seen if the audience would accept some of these scenes in the midst of the grandeur and scale of the rest of the film. Ashish Mhatre and Apurva Motiwale Sahai's editing is neat but could have been sharper in the second half.

On the whole, ADIPURUSH is a well-made entertainer with a big-screen appeal. At the box office, it’ll have a bumper opening and a strong weekend due to the immense hype and extreme excitement among the target audience to watch it in cinemas.

Adipurush Review – Masala-Fied Ramayan

Adipurush Review USA Premiere Report

OUR RATING 2.75/5

Prabhas-Adipurush-Movie-Review

Adipurush is the cinematic retelling of the timeless tale of Ramayan. What happens when Janaki (Kriti Sanon) is abducted by Lankesh (Saif Ali Khan) during her vanavas with Raghava (Prabhas) is the movie’s basic plot.

Performances

Prabhas, as a star, has the aura to pull off Rama. There is an inherent innocence and calmness in his eyes. But, despite these positive aspects, Prabhas doesn’t really hit the mark with the once-in-a-lifetime part.

Prabhas is riddled with inconsistent characterisation. His looks are that of a warrior, but the character trait given is that of a calm and composed Lord Rama. The mixture doesn’t come across well on screen, making him look passive.

The visual effects, too, don’t help the cause. At times Prabhas seems stiff and sends a plastic vibe neck down. In a couple of emotional scenes, Prabhas is fine and is largely alright.

Kriti Sanon as Sita barely passes muster. First of all, she has less screen time and doesn’t have much content to dive into. Kriti Sanon doesn’t spoil anything but fails to leave an impression that would help her be remembered playing the legendary character.

And last but not least, Saif Ali Khan plays Lankesh, aka Ravan. He goes over the top with his portrayal as if playing a mass movie villain. It deviates so much from the material that the character seems almost unrecognisable. It feels as if he walked from the sets of the director’s (Om Raut) last film Tanhaji where he played the antagonist role. After a point, the antics get irritating, and his act becomes senseless if one thinks of Ravana from the classic Ramayana.

Director-Om-Raut

Two-film-old Om Raut directs Adipurush. His last, Tanhaji, was a VFX-heavy period story that well blended special effects and drama. In his latest outing, Om Raut has picked a much-loved epic tale of the victory of good over evil, Ramayan, with a much more significant visual effects involvement.

The two critical things associated with the Adipurush narrative are the visual reimagination and the change in the presentation of the age-old characters. These elements make it different from the previous iterations.

The first half of Adiprush is less on larger-than-life visual imagination and focuses on the key characters. The world and setting are created here, and the maker charted the usual, expected classical drama course.

The result is a watchable fare with an engaging drama. Although nothing outstanding acting-wise, the visuals and the sticking to the characters help sail through the narrative.

The problem in Adipurush starts when Om Raut tries to masala-fi the narrative with the modern-day mass movie sensibility. The visual effects, too, are designed to suit the over-the-top masala on offer. All these issues appear majorly in the second half.

The proceedings automatically turn inconsistent mainly due to the characterisations of the protagonist (Raghava) and antagonist (Lankesh). The former appears very passive, and the latter is in a different zone altogether, playing a regular villain to the galleries type of parts. It is irritating in parts.

The whole thing then leads to a never-ending, VFX-laden climax. Things go on and on and on and don’t seem to have an end in sight. Such is the impact that, finally, the audience feels relieved when it all ends. Amidst all these, the real emotions are lost. There is no emotional connection when Sita and Ram meet, and one is happy that things are getting over.

Overall, Adipurush is a big screen spectacle that is not just repackaging visually but also sensibility-wise. It is a mass, modern version of the classic Ramayan tale. If one doesn’t mind the distortion of the original characters and some tacky VFX, try it, but don’t keep the epic characterisation in mind.

Hanuman-Adipurush-Movie-Review

Lakshman and Hanuman are the two crucial parts of Adipurush. Sunny Singh essays the former, whereas Devdatta Nage takes on the mantle of the latter. Sunny appears lacklustre, which is why despite a good enough runtime, he fails to register. Devadatta Nage’s Hanuman act gets better as the narrative progresses. The rest of the cast plays bits and pieces roles and are alright.

Music-Director-Sanchit-Balhara

Ajay-Atul and Sachet-Parampara (Ram Sita Ram) composer duos have provided Adipurush’s music. The Jai Shri Ram track is a blockbuster of anthemic proportions, elevating movie prospects. Although not on the same level, it works well within the narrative. The background score, too, is consistently good and, as is the trend now, very loud. It is effective, and that’s the job done at the end of the day.

Karthik Palani’s cinematography is satisfactory. The visual effects do a lot of the heavy lifting, but one can see some good work in setting them up underneath. The editing should have been better, considering the length and the exhaustive feeling at the end. The film’s biggest USP, its VFX, is a mixed bag. A lot is tacky and cartoonish, but some parts simultaneously look incredible on screen. The writing is overdone, and the dubbing gives Adipurush (Telugu) a dubbed movie feel.

Adipurush Movie Review by M9News

Final Report:

Adipurush’s second half is lengthy and tiring. Instead of a classic tale, it is a mass retelling with a senseless Ravan. But the big-screen appeal saves the day. Adipurush is Ramayan 2.0 for over-the-top action lovers.

First Half Report:

Adipurush is a Ramayan masala-fied. The first half is watchable for the epic tale that Ramayanam is despite the presentation. The second half is crucial now, as the VFX novelty doesn’t last long.

Prabhas emerged as a pan-India star with Baahubali. Though the craze did not transform his next movie Saaho into a money spinner, Prabhas became the most wanted star for Bollywood filmmakers who finally made Adipurush with him. Adipurush is a huge-budgeted mythological film based on Ramayana, directed by Om Raut and produced by T-Series.

The first teaser could not receive a great response due to the poor computer-generated imagery, but the movie slowly garnered craze as it reached the release date. Prabhas’s stardom and Lord Rama’s sentiment are doing wonders with the advance bookings for Adipurush. Touted as one of the most expensive Indian films ever made and with stars like Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, and Saif Ali Khan, Adipurush is releasing today all over the world. Here is the review of Adipurush.

What Is It About?

Based on Valmiki Ramayana, Adipurush is all about Raghava (Prabhas), Janaki (Kriti Sanon) who face threat from demon Ravana (Saif Ali Khan). How Raghava with the help of a Bajrangi aka Hanuman and Sugreeva and army of Vanaras take on Ravana forms the crux of the story.

Performances

Prabhas performed fine as Raghava. As an ordinary man with no major powers, Raghava’s woes and vulnerability were portrayed well. Some action episodes of him are well made, but rest looked cinematic and artificial. Saif Ali Khan is good as Ravana, he got so much elevation in the film. His Ravana looks are modernized a bit much. He appeared powerful, but it also looked odd when he walks around in the digitally raised giant personality. Kriti is decent but she has a very limited role. Others did fine in their respective roles. Indrajit’s character enthralls for some time in the second half. Sonal Chauhan is seen in just two scenes. Devdatta Nage as Bajrang (Hanuman) is good.

Technicalities

Adipurush’s first look was denounced, but that must have made the makers focus more on the visuals. The overall visuals are better than the expectation, but there are some scenes which require betterment. The dialogues are alright. Background music stands tall among all in Adipurush and it elevated many scenes. Some scenes, frames, and characterizations remind us of popular movies in Hollywood, like ‘The Planet Of Apes’ among others. But it appeals to kids.

Scale & Grandeur

Thumbs Down

Lengthy Climax

VFX Quality In 2D

Ramayana is one of the very well-known epics and the story itself is not new. It has been told several times earlier in different forms, but Om Raut wanted to show the Ramayana as a film using modern technology and star faces. It worked to a major extent, but the damage done by CGI work could not be fully rectified. The VFX and CG work in 2D is not impressive. Whereas they are done well in 3D.

The first half of Adipurush is good with enough drama and an engaging narrative. A decent presentation of the actual story of Ramayana keeps entertaining mostly.

The second half takes off from a decent first half, but it mainly has the battle and confrontation episodes that have gone overboard with the graphics. Starting from Raghava and his army attacking Ravana’s Lanka and until the end, the whole battle episode is lengthy. It becomes an over-the-top action movie and that too with a lot of VFX work.

The background music comes to rescue Adipurush from sliding down due to pretty average VFX. Also, most of the movie has a dark ambiance. It might be the color symbolization of the Ravana and Lanka theme, but it is overdone.

Ravana’s characterization appears a bit awkward to the traditional fans of Ramayana. His fort in Lanka, his attire, and even his armory look like it was heavily inspired by the ‘superhero’ movies. The makers perspective might be correct to make the villain look trendy so as to enthrall the younger generation audiences who are very connected to the character and theme trend. Ravana’s ten heads speaking within themselves before taking a decision is interesting.

Overall, Adipurush starts as a drama-driven classic tale, but that turns into a lengthy action fest towards the latter half. It might attract children and the family audience who might want to enjoy a Hindu mythological story with a modern presentation. Considering the openings and large screenings across pan India, need to see how audiences receive it. If prepared to watch it, go for a big screen experience and recommended to see it in 3D.

Bottomline: Modern ‘3D’ Ramayana For New Generation

Rating: 2.75 /5

Growing up, I watched and rewatched Jai Bajrang Bali . I enjoyed and re-enjoyed. It was playful, it was witty, it told the story well. It wasn’t pretty, though. As I watched Adipurush , memories from the other film kept popping into my mind. Because Adipurush is far, far from entertaining. But hey, it is pretty, especially the first half. And the second half is gorgeous as hell in its depiction of a dark, almost always black Lanka.

The dialogue has no juice at all. The pep talks wear you down. The one-liners don’t land.

Adipurush takes itself extremely seriously. That works in the visuals department. As in, the forest that Raghav’s troop finds itself in is depicted with a magical, majestical brush. It engages the eye.

But what the eye enjoys engages the brain and heart only for a bit. The over-arching story of Ramayana isn’t the most interesting one around, in the first place. What makes it charming are the little side stories, like those of Bali-Sugreev, Shabari, Hanuman’s witticisms, Sanjivani, etc. Adipurush gives it a dry, one-tone treatment void of substance, spirit, and soul. To top it off, it thinks that is a good thing and does so in slo-mo. The word melodrama doesn’t have the ring that ‘ nautanki ’ does. And nautanki is what all this comes across as.

And it's not that the visuals continue to entice. The makers commit to an extremely dark palette in the second half. Their use of contrast is interesting in that the pink/peach of the Ashok Vatika trees against the black looks gorgeous. But firstly, colouring a supposedly beautiful Ashok Vatika hues of dark grey and black is heartbreaking and a bit much. Yes-yes, we get it. Ravan, bad. Black, bad. So, all things Ravan, black. But hey, Ravan garden also bad? Come on!

Then we have the good guys have orange flags, their arrows have orange trails. No one could possibly miss the political symbology. eyeroll But the bad guys' weapons are identified by blue flames. Hmmm. Oh, and not to be missed, lotuses and peacocks supposedly make Janaki happy. I wasn’t too impressed by the part of the Ramayana that the film chose to focus on, just the war. Yep, the 1.5 hours post-interval is almost all war. Equally meh, is the choice of actor to play Ravan.

Anyhow good actors are pretty much wasted in the film. Potentially, the actors are intentionally playing it out like a comic strip, to give us a feel of reading the Ramayana in an Amar Chitra Katha . That is the only way I could explain Saif Ali Khan ’s weird walk. Three hours of wooden acting makes it rather boring. Only Kriti Sanon feels like she has some variation to offer, and Devdatta Nage might have were he given something to work with.

The dialogue has no juice at all. The pep talks wear you down. The one-liners don’t land. Like one had me make a mathematical equation. maryaada > praana , Janaki is inside praana , therefore maryaada > Janaki. By some coincidence, there was a spark of a moment between Raghav and Bajrang when they first met. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just me, given belief in Hanuman supported me through whatever little rough times I had in my childhood.

Adipurush gives it a dry, one-tone treatment void of substance, spirit, and soul. To top it off, it thinks that is a good thing and does so in slo-mo.

Other than that, the makers assume we know the story. This assumption allows them to focus on form rather than function. The liberties they take with the story reek of propaganda, like converting Ravan’s vehicle to a ravenous bat. A well-visualised bat, but a bat?

At the end of three hours, the only decent thing I have to say about the film is that it brought this song back to memory. For CGI-generated visual beauty, we are spoilt for choices these days, aren’t we?

I watched the film in Hindi, 3D.

So-So, by Bharadwaj Rangan, Blogical Conclusion, The New Sunday Express : ...Om Raut’s Adipurush dispenses with the early parts of Valmiki’s Ramayana, and deposits us in the forest with Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita. One of the first big events is the abduction of Sita, so allow me to describe this stretch. Ravana casts a spell that binds her in vines. She loses her senses and she begins to float like a corpse. Ravana discards his beggar disguise and balloons to his original size: he is a man-monster. An equally monstrous dragon-like creature descends from the sky. Ravana places Sita on it and begins to steer the dragon towards Lanka. Jatayu intercepts Ravana in an attempt to save Sita. He unleashes a sword and jumps off his mount, and he slays the giant eagle. The dragon makes a swoop and catches Ravana in free fall. They reach Lanka, and alight on something that looks like a spaceship docking station from the Star Wars films.... full review

So-So, by Nitin Jain, Glamsham.com : ...For Indians, Ramayan is a part of life and not just because it is in our mythology but because of the various teachings that we derive from it. It is also because of the drama that is involved every now and then. Om Raut’s Adipurush is probably derived from the fact that Ram is (considered) as the most optimum ‘man’, but the same could not be extracted in a short span of 179 mins.... full review

So-So, News18.com : ...The dialogues, on the other hand, make the screenplay a bumpy ride. While credit goes to Manoj Muntashir for not resorting to Sanskritised Hindi for the dialogues that can be easily deciphered by the audience, some of Raghava’s lines are extremely didactic and intellectualised. In a few other scenes, the dialogues are so unintentionally colloquial that you end up cracking up. In a key scene, one of Ravana’s henchmen is seen hurling ‘yeh tera bua ka bageecha nahi hai…’ to Bajrang who is sent by Raghava to check on Janaki in Ashoka Vatika.... full review

So-So, by Renuka Vyavahare I, Times of India : ...The VFX and visual appeal are passable if not impressive. The 3D feels like an unnecessary accessory. With a run time of 3 hours, you wish the story wasn’t as dependent on the special effects as it should have been on the nature of its revered characters or what set them apart. Despite the dramatic buildup, the climax doesn't live you with that sense of joy, reward or victory. This one’s a sincere attempt that gets a tad overwhelmed by its ambition of handling a story of this magnitude.... full review

So-So, by Ritika Handoo, Zee News : ...Filmmaker Om Raut has made a huge attempt to re-telling the epic narrative in his own style with modern elements added to the screenplay. But why an overdose of Game Of Thrones (GOT) influence? Right from visuals of bats flying (replacing the dragons), darkness all around to background music. Then there's a concoction of characters looking straight out from Planet Of Apes and King Kong - this could be much better and more innovative.... full review

Thumbs down, by L Ravichandran, Deccan Chronicle : ...This 500crore effort is in complete disarray. Thumbs down, by Abhimanyu Mathur, DNA : ...Adipurush could have been the film the Indian film industry needed and looked up to – an example of how to make a modern epic based on the rich cultural treasure trove of stories our country has. Thumbs down, by Sai Tulasi Neppali, fullhyd.com : ...Ultimately, Adipurush ridicules its own purported goals. Thumbs down, by JOYEETA MITRA SUVARNA, India TV : ...When a mythological film is made, the first emphasis is laid on the language, but Om Raut's Adipurush has nothing to do with this. Many Urdu words have been used whereas in the era of Ramayana, Urdu language was not even in existence. Hanuman ji will be heard speaking in colloquial Mumbai language like 'Kapda tere baap ka, tel tere baap ka.. jalegi bhi tere baap ki' may not be liked by the audience. Thumbs down, by Shubhara Gupta, indian express : ...his version of the Ramayan is not interested in connecting with the feeling of genuine religiosity that any reading of the ‘granth’ arouses, whether it is the most popular Tulsidas version or the Valmiki version. Thumbs down, by Umesh Punwani, koimoi : ...Ajay & Atul are the only two people from the entire team who got the assignment continuing to deliver a banger of a soundtrack despite all the negatives. The only reason why I would’ve liked this film as an audiobook more is because of this duo’s otherworldly background score. From Shivoham to Jai Shree Ram, trust them to deliver some ‘God Level’ songs (pun intended!).... full review

Thumbs down, by Uday Bhatia, Live Mint : ...The writing is amusingly ornate, your local Ramlila script but without the fun. For some reason, Raut and co-writer Manoj Muntashir are worried their audience won’t get 2000-year-old plot points. Which leads to scenes like this:... full review

Thumbs down, by Sameer Ahire, Movie Talkies : ...Nothing can be said about Adipurush’s VFX, as we all know how bad they are in the trailer and songs. In the movie, things just get worse. That Sanjeevani booti scene is turned into an alien pod, with lots of tools available to make juice in Tretayug. Lanka Dahan is more about Hanuman setting fire to ammunition and liquid gas, if I didn’t get it wrong. The songs are good because they have soul. “Ram Siya Ram” and “Jai Shree Ram” are known chants already, so no credit to the composers and lyricists. The cinematography is there but does nothing except capture things with blind eyes. A couple of frames shake a little as if it were a handy camera and they were shooting an Instagram reel, while some are cut in between. The editing makes the film a tedious affair. The only reason you don’t feel bored is because it’s a known story, and you all love watching the Ramayana. Om Raut impressed me with Lokmanya and Tanhaji, but by making Adipurush, he has committed the sin of a lifetime. I don’t know about others, but I will never forgive you for ruining the most beloved tale from Indian history like this. As a whole, Adipurush is a mockery of the Ramayana.... full review

Thumbs down, NDTV : ...If there is anything worse than what Adipurush passes off as dialogues, it is the film's sound design. Not only is it ear-splittingly loud, it is shockingly unimaginative. But why complain when virtually everything else in Adipurush is as just as phenomenally slapdash?... full review

Thumbs down, by Avinash Lohana, Pinkvilla : ...Prabhas as Raghav is limited in his performance with restrictive expressions. However, the actor shines in two sequences where he motivates his army. Kriti Sanon as Janaki lives up to her part and delivers a balanced performance. Though I wish she had more screen time in Adipurush. Saif Ali Khan has aced Raavan with his expressions, but it is the overall body language that doesn’t work. To show his large demeanor the makers have adapted to the Hulk walk, which doesn’t truly connect with the character. Sunny Singh as Lakshman seemed restricted in his performance, but Devdatta Nage as Bajrang and Vatsal Sheth as Indrajit deliver a good performance.... full review

Thumbs down, by Deepa Gahlot, Rediff : ...In probably the only really effective scene in the film, Ram tells his army to fight not for him, but for their place in history. Then a bunch of film people come along in 2023 and distort it.... full review

Thumbs down, by Nandini Ramnath, Scroll.in : ...If Prabhas, whose voice has been dubbed by Sharad Kelkar, glowers monotonously and endlessly, Kriti Sanon is a questionable fit as Janki/Sita. The lack of chemistry between the leads is augmented by the heavily worked-upon backdrops and Manoj Muntashir’s pedestrian dialogue.... full review

Adipurush Movie Review – Commercial Ramayana !

Adipurush movie review

Adipurush movie review

TELUGU360 Rating: 2.75/5

Pan-Indian star Prabhas delivered two back-to-back disappointments with Saaho and Radhe Shyam. His next offering Adipurush is a mythological drama that is directed by Om Raut. The film is hitting the screens on Friday and the pre-sales are terrific in all the languages and in all the territories. Prabhas plays Lord Rama and Kriti Sanon reprises the role of Sita. Saif Ali Khan plays the evil Ravana in Adipurush. A major portion of the film’s budget is spent on the VFX work. T Series and Retrophiles are the producers.

Story: Adipurush’s story covers part of Ramayana, The Aranya Kanda. The movie starts with Ravanasura ( Saif Ali Khan) abducting Sita ( Kriti Sanon). Rest of the film is about Sri Rama ( Prabhas) ‘s effort to bring Sita from Lanka with the help of vanara sena

Analysis : Ramayana story has been told umpteen times on the big screen, on Television, and in books. Many writers and directors have presented their versions for decades. Adipurush Director Om Raut came up with an interesting version of Ramayan. The approach is to make the Ramayana epic appeal to the present generation which grew up watching Marvel Universe films. In this deliberate attempt to commercialize Ramayana, the team Adipurush has been partially successful. Had they made a crisper runtime version, Adipurush would have been a good watch. The Ravana fort artwork is lavish, The Ravanasura’s associate demons’ getups highly resemble Hollywood fiction films than Hindu mythology. The first half of the film has many good episodes one after another and it keeps the audience engaged. However, the second half could not meet the standards set by the first half. The climax portion is very lengthy, high budget visuals were gone waste here.

Performances: Prabhas who has an angry young man image, tried his best to portray lord Shriram’s character. He did well. The crucial role of Sita played by Kriti Sanon has less screen time but is good. There are many cinematic liberties with Saif ali khan‘s Ranvasura character.

Positives: Prabhas as Raghava Good First half Soothing Music Jai Shriram vibe Visual effects throughout the film Decent 3D episodes

Negatives: Excessive length Shabby VFX works in a couple of scenes. Second half

The Commercialized version of Ramayana is a mixed bag. The first 50% of the film is VERY GOOD, the next 30% is so-so and the climax 20% is average. For most of the parts, the visuals are better than expected. The songs and background score are Excellent. The lengthy run-time and shabby VFX work at times play the spoilsport. Overall, the needle stops somewhere between” One time watch” to ” Good Watch ”.

Adipurush features Prabhas as Raghava, Kriti as Janaki, Saif as Lankesh, Sunny Singh as Lakshmana and Devdatta Nage as Hanuman.

With just one day remaining for the highly anticipated release of Om Raut’s Adipurush , discussions about the movie are reaching sky-high. Prabhas, renowned for his exceptional acting skills, will be portraying the role of Lord Ram and the film holds special significance for the actor as he has been eagerly awaiting a blockbuster for quite some time. But just a day prior to its India release, the film will be opening for the USA audience since the distributors have opted for AMC Stubs A-List.

As per a report by Hindustan Times, the move seems to be unprecedented since distributors usually resort to such offers only in the scenario when ‘there is a burden of upfront costs and interest for big star movies’. This will let the A-pass holders to book the Adipurush tickets for free.

As far as advance booking for the film is concerned in the US markets, the film has managed to sell tickets worth $490,000 (approximately ₹4.10 crore). The Australian advance booking collection stands at $150,000 (around ₹83 lakh), the UK bookings have amassed £55,000 (₹50 lakh), Canada has witnessed a collection of $30,000 ( ₹25 lakh) and additionally ₹40 lakh in European and South-Asian territories. The film is expected to collect $1 million dollars alone after its US premiere.

You’ll be surprised to know that Delhi-NCR is selling the most expensive ticket for Adipurush. One ticket for the movie is priced at Rs 2200 in PVR Directors Cut, Ambience Mall, according to BookMyShow. The ticket price is for the Hindi version of the film in 2D format.

Adipurush is directed by Om Raut. This is Om’s second directorial after the phenomenal success of Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. Adipurush, a 3D feature film, was officially announced in August 2020. The star cast of the film wrapped up the shoot for the magnum opus in 103 days. Adipurush has been shot in Hindi and Telugu. It will also release in Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. Touted as a film celebrating “the victory of good over evil”, multilingual period saga Adipurush is an on-screen adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana.

Adipurush features Prabhas as Raghava, Kriti as Janaki, Saif as Lankesh, Sunny Singh as Lakshmana and Devdatta Nage as Hanuman. While the teaser of Adipurush was met with criticism, its trailer received praises from all quarters. Many people said that the Adipurush trailer was quite an improvement from its teaser which was bashed over the depiction of Hindu deities and “poor quality” of visual effects. The more than 3-minute-long trailer shows the major events of Ramayana.

  1. Adipurush movie review & film summary (2023)

"Adipurush" just opened here in America, but it's already controversial in India, where the writers of trend pieces, interviews, and reviews consider the implications of Lankesh's appearance, including his weird nu-metal gel-spiked haircut, which has led to some comparisons to the Muslim leader Alauddin Khilji.Sanon's casting as Sita has also led to outrage and, unfortunately ...
