  • Wellbeing in North Pres.

Welcome to north presentation primary school.

We are a vibrant primary school for boys and girls situated in the heart of the historic north side of the city, near the beautiful Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Anne. We have a very diverse school community and are proud of the many different cultures and nationalities our children represent.

North Pres. has a long and proud history of education on the north side of Cork city. Our aim is to combine the best traditions of the Presentation ethos with modern teaching aids and ideas so that our pupils can look forward to the future with confidence.

We as a staff at North Pres. strive to ensure the best educational outcomes for all of our pupils. We firmly believe in the importance of developing our pupils in a holistic way; socially, emotionally, physically as well as academically. We do so in a way that is fun and meaningful for the children.

Working in partnership with parents, guardians and the wider school community is of the utmost importance to us. You as parents and guardians are the primary educators of your children, therefore we strive to have strong links between school and home.

We are very proud of our school here in North Pres. We aim to provide a safe, fun learning environment for our pupils, where they will flourish and grow.

We are looking forward to a bright and happy year ahead.

Kind regards,

Susan O’ Neill

Acting Principal

2023-2024 Fundraising Campaign

We have been very fortunate in recent years to improve the learning and education experience in our school by means of fundraising. This year, the purchase of three new interactive whiteboards was identified by our staff and management team as a priority. We have two Clevertouch smart screens in our school already and these boards have had a hugely positive impact on the teaching and learning for these classes.

If you would like to make a small financial contribution to help us purchase three new screens, you can make a donation online at the following GoFundMe page.

School of Sanctuary

We are working towards becoming recognised as a School of Sanctuary!

A School of Sanctuary is a school that is committed to creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment that benefits everybody, especially families seeking sanctuary. It is a school that helps it students, staff, parents, and the wider community to understand what it means to be a refugee and to extend a welcome to everyone regardless of their immigration status. Schools of Sanctuary is not a project, nor a short-term school initiative. It is a culture that schools achieve over time to ensure everyone feels welcomed, safe, and included in the school and beyond.

It begins with 3 core principles: Learn, Take Action and Share.

Our History & Our Mission

Our school’s history.

Nano Nagle , voted the Irish woman of the millennium, is the foundress of the Presentation Order, which she founded in Cork in 1775. The order was established for the education of boys and girls who, at the time, were almost totally deprived of schooling. The Presentation schools today form a worldwide network carrying the vision of Nano Nagle to every continent. The Nagle family motto, Not Words But Deeds , is still the dynamic that underlies the Presentation vision today.

In early 1817 Margaret Cormack opened the first Presentation convent and school at Stradavoher, Thurles in a building donated by her brother. In November 1817 the school and convent moved to Cathedral Street , to premises on either side of Chapel Lane, buildings just vacated by the Christian Brothers when they re-located to Gaol Street. Chapel Lane occupies roughly the same position as the driveway in Archbishop’s House does today. In 1824, when there were seven sisters in the community, they moved to a new convent, the oldest part of the present convent building.

The Famine took a heavy toll on the sisters who were engaged in much charitable and relief work in the neighbourhood. Nevertheless, by 1862, because of pressure of numbers in the original school, a new building was opened and blessed by Archbishop Leahy. This second primary school today stands at right angles to Cathedral Street, adjoining the grounds of Archbishop’s House. Except for £200 subscriptions, the £1950 cost of the building was borne by the Presentation Community . It was used as a primary school for almost one hundred years.

The present primary school was blessed by Archbishop Kinane in May 1957, in the presence of Mr Jack Lynch, then Minister for Education. Costing over £100,000, the building was then and still remains one of the finest primary school buildings in the country with wide, spacious corridors and bright, airy classrooms.

Presentation Primary School celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2007, while also remembering 190 proud years of Presentation education in Thurles. The Minister for Education, Mary Hanafin, a past pupil, together with Archbishop Clifford, opened an anniversary garden at the rear of the school. Three murals were unveiled on the stairwells as part of the celebrations. The school community, past and present, attended a Mass of Thanksgiving in the cathedral.

Our Mission Statement

Presentation Primary School is an urban Catholic Primary school that welcomes everyone and facilitates the educational development and spiritual needs of the children in a caring and well-disciplined milieu. The school aspires to nurture in the pupils a sense of their own self-worth and an awareness and tolerance of the needs and differences of others.

The school, acknowledging that parents are the primary educators of their children, values and encourages their interest in and support of all our efforts. While working as a team, the school respects the professionalism and individuality of each staff member. Together we promote a code of discipline that is firm but kind and fair. Within a secure, happy environment we endeavour to foster the total well-being of every child within the context of their cultural and religious traditions.

It was the conviction of the foundress of the Presentation Order, Nano Nagle, that every child has the right to be educated to achieve the maximum of his/her potential. In Presentation Primary School we do our best to follow Nano’s practical vision with her motto:

“Not Words But Deeds”

-Nano Nagle

NORTH Presentation Primary School recently held a very successful Intercultural Day in their school which is located at Cathedral Walk on Gerald Griffin Street.

The Cork city primary school is very diverse and inclusive with more than 40 ethnicities currently attending the school which has a proud history of education on the northside.

The school which caters for boys and girls from junior infants have been granted coeducational status on a phased basis and are currently in the process of having their school recognised as a School of Sanctuary.

A School of Sanctuary is a school that is committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment that benefits everybody, especially families seeking sanctuary.

It is a school that helps its students, staff, parents, and the wider community to understand what it means to be a refugee and to extend a welcome to everyone regardless of their immigration status.

During the Intercultural Day, pupils and families gathered to celebrate and learn about all the cultures in the school. It proved a fun-filled day with plenty of music, food, and dance.

Máire Coleman who is the home school liaison officer said the Intercultural Day was a ‘culmination’ of numerous projects held over recent weeks in the school community.

“We have 54 nationalities in our school. My job is to link in with the families and the community. The Intercultural Day was a culmination of everything.

"In the weeks leading up to the big day, the children were all doing projects about where they come from and their family’s heritage. We did a few photo displays with the kids around the school and linking them to their countries. The parents did an art workshop about their culture which was displayed on the day. We also had hair weave and braiding for African culture,” she said.

Numerous cultural events were held on the day in the school to celebrate Intercultural Day said Ms Coleman. “The students came in all dressed up in their national dress or in the colours of their country. We had a taste around the world station where all the parents brought in food from their own culture which was phenomenal. Mario an instructor from Zumba Cork did a demonstration with the parents and the students. It was a great day. There was a great atmosphere. The students, parents and staff were all amazing. They really enjoyed it.

“Because we are such a diverse school it is important to celebrate and acknowledge that. It is important to realise that we have students who were born in Ireland, but they may have families from other places and that is important as well.

“It is great to see all the children in the yard and they are all different skin colours, identities, and languages. They are all friends. That is lovely to see and heart-warming”.

Ms Coleman said the North Presentation Primary School is at the ‘heart’ of the local community. “We are a very progressive school. We like to think we are at the heart of the community. Members of the men’s shed were also present on the day as they do work in the garden. We try to link in the community where we can.

“The parents are great as well. We run English classes here, so a lot of the parents have become friendly through that. We have around 300 students. The staff here are amazing. They buy into everything. Anything to support the kids or their family, the teachers are great to do that as well.”

Presentation Primary School, Kilkenny

056 776 5598, [email protected].

Presentation Primary School, also know as Scoil Mhuire, is located in the heart of Kilkenny City in the shadow of St. Mary’s Cathedral. It is a large urban school, catering for 430 children. We have sixteen mainstream classes and two speech and language classes (for children who have been diagnosed with a developmental language disorder, DLD). We also have a large Special Education Team who specialise in Aistear, Literacy Lift Off, Reading Recovery, Accelerated Reading, Dyslexia support and Nurture Theory. We work very hard to ensure that all children are supported to reach their full potential while attending our school.

Mission Statement

Imbued with the dignity of the Presentation spirit, we promote the dignity of all our pupils by educating them in a caring Christian environment, nurturing a sense of self-worth, respect for themselves and others and an appreciation of a good work ethic, thus fostering their spiritual, emotional and academic development. As a school, we pride ourselves on offering a rounded, holistic experience to all our children. Our number one rule is “Be Kind”. We expect a high standard of behaviour from all members of our school community and this enables us to provide quality teaching and learning our classrooms. Visitors to the school often comment on the warm, happy atmosphere. As a Presentation school, our ethos is one of inclusion and diversity. We welcome children from across Kilkenny city and from all parts of the world. Our staff will always go the extra mile to provide a high-quality education for your child in a kind, respectful atmosphere. We look forward to welcoming you to Presentation Primary School Kilkenny.

Board of Management

We are supported in our work by the Board of Management. The Board of Management is comprised of eight members. They are the chairperson, appointed by the Bishop of Ossory, two Bishop’s nominees, the school principal, one teacher, two elected parents and two community representatives. Meetings are held monthly and follow the format of minutes, correspondence, Treasurer’s report, Principal’s report, Parent Council report and child protection. All aspects of school life are under the guidance of the Board. The Board of Management has a four year term of office. The present Board, and previous Boards, have been a wonderful source of support and guidance to all our staff, parents and pupils.

Parents Council

We have a very active Parents’ Council which meets monthly. The role of the Parents’ Council is to support the school community by fundraising and policy development. All parents are encouraged to join the Parents’ Council to use their talents and experience for the benefit of the children.

Presentation Primary School has a long tradition for providing high quality education in Kilkenny city, dating back to 12th October 1800. Nano Nagle opened the first Presentation School in Cork in 1754. Ten years later, Nano had seven schools around Cork city. She taught the children how to read and write and she also taught needlework. She opened schools for boys as well. Nano also helped the sick and the poor. She became known as the “Lady of the Lantern” because, at night, she used to travel home by the light of her lantern. In Presentation schools, the lantern is still used as a symbol of hope and light today. In 1775, Nano founded the Presentation “sisters”. Two of these sisters, Isabella and Catherine, opened the first Presentation School in Kilkenny in 1800. They intended to limit class size to twelve. However, on the first day sixty pupils arrived! The school went from strength to strength despite the turbulent times of 1800-1950. By 1950, the Presentation Primary School in Kilkenny had about 700 children in roll. They were accommodated in various rooms from James’ Street to Chapel Lane. All of the time the numbers were growing and, in some cases, there were two classes per room. The Presentation Sisters applied to the Department of Education for permission to build a new school in 1952. Eventually the go ahead was given. The school was to be built on a green field site in Parnell Street. On September 25th 1956, the foundation stone was blessed and laid by Fr. Patrick Collier, Bishop of Ossory. The new school, called Scoil Mhuire, was a two storey building with eighteen classrooms, a fine assembly hall with a stage, offices and specialist rooms. Facilities included two playgrounds with covered in areas for wet days. The school was surrounded by lawns, flower beds and had two basketball/tennis courts. The estimated cost of building the new school was £102,000. One third of this was to be paid by the Presentation Order.

Since it’s official opening in 1958, the school has gone from strength to strength under the capable leadership of twelve principals.
