Forgotten Love explained & the true story behind the book
Forgotten Love has represented one of the most exciting movies released on Netflix in the second half of 2023. Based on a famous Polish book, the film tells the fascinating story of Rafal Wilczur, a brilliant surgeon who loses his memory and starts a second life, reuniting by chance with his daughter. The plot is pretty complicated, and the ending leaves many questions unanswered. Also, viewers have been curious to know if there was a true story behind it, and the book is factually inspired by two real cases mentioned by the author. Everything will be explained in this article.
You can watch the official trailer for Forgotten Love here on Youtube .
Forgotten Love plot & ending explained: who tried to kill Rafal?
The plot of Forgotten Love follows the life of Dr. Rafal Wilczur, a brilliant surgeon living in Poland with his wife and his little daughter. Rafal is a passionate doctor who provides help also for poor people who don’t have insurance. However, his wife shows signs of depression at home, and one day, she leaves with her daughter. Rafal tries to find her, but he gets attacked by a group of bandits. We see an enigmatic scene: while Rafal gets beaten, his colleague, Dr. Jerzy Dobraniecki, arrives; he watches Rafal lose consciousness and leaves without helping him. From that, we understand he wanted him out of the game so he could become the Chief Surgeon in the clinic.
As Forgotten Love has explained, according to the newspaper, Rafal is believed dead, although his body was never found. His wife will start a new life elsewhere, and his daughter will grow up. Years later, we discover that Rafal is still alive: he completely loses his memory and doesn’t remember who he is. But he can still use all his exceptional medical skills and help people out of his natural passion. We slowly discover that Marysia is his daughter: she grew up believing her father committed suicide, but at the ending of Forgotten Love , she understands that Rafal is her biological father.
The interesting part of the plot in Forgotten Love is that Rafal still doesn’t remember what happened to him years before, but that doesn’t exclude that one day he will. This scares Dr. Dobraniecki: if Rafal regains his memory, he can accuse him of complicity or failure to assist, causing a scandal (he’s a renowned doctor). That’s why Dobraniecki asks his lover, Zoska, to call him immediately if he shows signs he’s regaining memory. Also, at the trial, Dobraniecki proposes to take Rafal under his custody and treat his memory: he’s probably more interested in preventing him from ever regaining his memory again so his reputation will be safe.
The plot and the ending of Forgotten Love have explained the story of a character who reunites with his destiny: Marysia will officially recognize Rafal as her father, and society will identify him as Dr. Rafal Wilczur, reconnecting with his true story. At the ending of Forgotten Love, Rafal will marry Zoska, and Marysia gets married to Count Leszek Czynski.
Will Rafal Wilczur ever regain his memory? Forgotten Love is based on the book Znachor ( The Quack ) by Polish author Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz: in that book, Rafal Wilczur doesn’t manage to get his memory back. However, the novel was so successful in Poland that the writer decided to work on a sequel. The following novel is titled Professor Wilczur , and yes, in that book, Rafal Wilczur regains his memory and tries to get back to his former job in the clinic .
Is there a true story behind the book?
The events depicted by Forgotten Love are so fascinating that people wonder if there is a true story inspiring the book and the movie. The author of the book, Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz, had the chance to explain it: the character of Rafal Wilczur is fictional, born from his fantasy, but two real-life events inspired him for this story .
Around 1936, the writer visited Radotki, a small village in east-central Poland. There, he met a mysterious man called Różycki: he worked in a water mill, but his knowledge of medicine and herbalism allowed him to receive patients from the village. It is said that many people preferred to be treated by him instead of real doctors. Różycki became the main inspiration for Rafal Wilczur and his novel Znachor – The Quack.
Another source was an article that the Polish newspaper ABC published one year before: the piece of news was about a doctor, Dr. Ferdynand Dolani, who regularly graduated in medicine in Brussels. However, he moved to Poland and concealed his medical degree, practicing as a quack. He believed in the ethical duty of helping others, and since most people were losing faith in real doctors, he preferred to act as a quack.
So the movie Forgotten Love , and the book it’s based on, is not a true story, but the author who wrote it got his inspiration from two real stories he discovered in those years.

Families can talk about the injustice done to Wilczur by his professional rival. Does it feel unsatisfying that the bad guy isn't punished? Why or why not?
How believable is it that a man with near-total amnesia lasting for 15 years would remember everything about how to be a doctor? Does it matter if this isn't believable?
How much of a role does coincidence play in the plot? Does that strengthen or weaken the film?

Forgotten Love Ending, Explained: Does Rafał Get His Memory Back?
An adaptation of Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz’s novel ‘Znachor’ (aka ‘The Quack’), ‘Forgotten Love’ is a period romantic film that revolves around an accomplished professor of surgery who loses everything, including his memory, when his wife and daughter leave him. Suffering from amnesia, the professor wanders from one place to another until he reaches a town that changes his life once again.
Directed by Michal Gazda, the Polish film stars Leszek Lichota, Maria Kowalska, Ignacy Liss, Anna Szymanczyk, Izabela Kuna, Mikolaj Grabowski, and Miroslaw Haniszewski, all of whom have given stellar performances. The movie is an enthralling tale of love, jealousy, fate, and duty that ends with a satisfying conclusion. If you are wondering how things eventually turn out for the professor, here is everything you need to know about the ending of ‘Forgotten Love.’ SPOILERS AHEAD!
Forgotten Love Plot Synopsis
Professor Rafał Wilczur is an accomplished and dedicated surgeon who never refuses services to those in need, even if it results in a clash with the authorities. Rafał’s colleague, Dr. Jerzy Dobraniecki, whom he also considers a friend, has his eyes on the post of Chief Surgeon of the clinic. However, Rafał is appointed as the Chief Surgeon by the Health Minister, while Dobraniecki fumes with jealousy. Back home, Rafał goes through a troubled marriage with his wife, Beata, but shares a loving relationship with his daughter, Marysia.
When Beata leaves home for her lover along with Marysia, Rafał is devastated and seeks Dobraniecki’s help in the search for his wife and daughter. Dobraniecki; however, betrays his trust and leaves him to die when the surgeon is attacked by goons on the way. While Rafał’s family and colleagues think he is dead, he survives but loses all his memory. 15 years later, he is seen moving from one village to another with no recollection of his past life under the name of Antoni Kosiba. Meanwhile, Marysia, now all grown-up, relocates to a town named Radoliszki after the death of her mother.
Fate brings Rafał to Radoliszki where he starts working at a mill with a woman named Zoska. Interestingly, he still possesses his surgical skills and utilizes them to treat injured villagers. During one such incident, he meets Marysia, but the two do not recognize each other. Meanwhile, Marysia, who works at the local bar, gets into a relationship with Count Leszek Czynski. When the couple meets with an accident, Rafał is left with no choice but to perform surgery on Marysia with tools stolen from the local doctor. To save her life, he also approaches Dobraniecki, still unaware of his past. Marysia and Rafał form a bond over time; however, the professor faces the risk of arrest for committing quackery, the act of ignorant medical practices.
Forgotten Love Ending: Does Rafał Get His Memory Back?
Yes, Rafał gets his memory back at the end. Throughout the film, the professor suffers from amnesia induced after the attack of the goons and neither remembers his identity nor his family. When he meets Marysia after 15 years in Radoliszki, he senses some sort of connection with her. Eventually, he starts taking care of her as his own daughter, despite being unaware that she actually is his own blood. Marysia, meanwhile, believes that her biological father died by suicide. But when Leszek finds out how close Marysia was to her biological father, things start to fall into place.
Leszek asks his mother about a scandal that took place many years ago, where a rich man’s wife left him for her lover. He learns that Marysia’s father was a pioneering brain surgeon whose description matches Antoni Kosiba. Leszek makes Marysia realize that Antoni is her real father. The two rush to the courtroom where Rafał is being put to trial for quackery. While all his patients defend him in court, things still don’t seem to be going in his favor as he does not possess a valid medical license. However, Marysia reaches the scene just in time and saves the day by revealing his real identity and explaining that she is his daughter. As soon as Marysia recognizes Rafał, he regains his memory and rushes to hug his daughter.
Do Marysia and Leszek End Up Together?
Yes, Marysia and Leszek do end up together and get married. The couple’s love story forms a prominent storyline in the film. Leszek gets attracted to Marysia the moment he sees her for the first time in the bar, and the girl gradually falls for him too. However, the path to their union is not easy and has several obstacles.
Firstly, Zenek, a local, also fancies Marysia but she keeps refusing his advances. Jealous of seeing her happy with Leszek, Zenek tampers with their motorcycle’s brakes, which results in the couple’s accident. Secondly, Leszek is a Count who belongs to a noble family, and his mother, Countess Eleonora Czynska, does not wish to see her son with a girl of lower rank. To keep Leszek away from Marysia, she goes to the extent of leaving her to die after the accident, while Rafał and Zoska plead with her to let the local doctor treat her.
Marysia gradually recovers and starts writing letters to Leszek, which are all kept hidden by his mother. She finally returns the ring Leszek had given her. At this moment, Leszek’s father, Count Stanislaw Czynski, goes against his wife and calls his son to tell him the truth. Leszek then leaves everything, including his home, to search for Marysia, and finally finds her in Warsaw. The two defy all odds to be together and the film ends with their wedding (along with Rafał and Zoska’s wedding), which is also attended by the Countess, though she still does not seem to be comfortable with their relationship.
Why Does Rafał Turn Himself In?
Rafał’s dedication to his profession is prevalent throughout the film. Even after losing his memory, he does not lose his medical abilities and puts those skills into the treatment of injured people in town. From helping Lesien with his twisted shoulder to treating Michał’s leg with a hammer and chisel, Rafał makes use of any tool he can to cure the patients. However, even though the villagers turn out to be fine, ignorant medical practices, termed as quackery, are illegal and so is the use of non-surgical tools to perform surgery.
Interestingly, Rafał addresses quackery in the initial scenes of the film and deems it responsible for many deaths in Poland during a discussion with the Health Minister. But after losing his memory, he goes on to execute the same practice himself as Antoni Kosiba and faces the risk of getting arrested. When Marysia recovers after her surgery, she confronts Rafał on whether he stole surgical tools from the doctor to save her life. While she is touched by his efforts and care, she also tells him to be cautious as he could go to prison.
After this heartfelt conversation with Marysia, Rafał decides to turn himself in. He confesses to stealing the local doctor’s tools and illegally helping the town’s people in front of the police officer. A trial then takes place where almost all the people of the town speak highly of the former surgeon. Rafał is ultimately acquitted when Marysia arrives and reveals his true identity in the courtroom.

Hayu vs. Netflix: Which Service Is Right for You?
Isabella Endrinal
Yes, amnesia plots have been done so many times before, but this adaptation does it pretty well! No wonder the novel is a Polish classic.
What it's about
After two adaptations, with the 1982 version considered a Christmastime classic for Polish families, Forgotten Love can seem like a redundant take on the iconic Polish novel. With twenty more minutes, it seems like the new Netflix adaptation could only improve its take through better production design, and sure, it certainly delivers that pre-war aesthetic through period-accurate costumes, props, and sets. However, Forgotten Love takes a more streamlined approach to the novel’s plot, through changing certain character choices. Without spoiling too much, some choices paint certain characters in a better light, while other changes prove to add an entertaining twist, such as the humorous way the villagers defend Kosiba. Znachor takes the 1937 story into the present, bringing a new generation through the emotional journey of the cherished Polish tale.
What stands out
The biggest change in Forgotten Love compared to the two film adaptations is the character Zoska. Zoska is not present at all in previous versions, given that she’s not a character in the novel or in the sequels of the first adaptation. Written as a secondary main character and Kosiba’s love interest, the addition of Zoska could have been the film’s weak point. Instead, Zoska is an excellent change, with Anna Szymanczyk’s performance. The scene where Zoska disallows the Count’s family doctor to enter their barn is so entertaining, and as the peasant woman fights against the upper-class doctor for the nobility, it makes sense for a story all about class dynamics.
Excellent feel good storyline, very good casting. HOWEVER: whoever wrote the voiceover needs to return to the school bench immediately or start write for animated children shows. Back in the era of the movie people did not speak like we speak today. Nobody used the word “scumbag”, or say ”in any case” or walk into a room unannounced and somebody says “what’s going on” etc etc etc very painful to listen how we talk today and yet the storyline was to have taken place in early 1900. The voices too should have been much more authentic! Good grief folks, you all know better. Be more intuitive, put yourself inside the story, era and ever so powerful emotions. Still a great movie, do watch it. Thank you. Volker Grady 🇨🇦

Forgotten Love review: A bittersweet tale of longing
Forgotten Love ( Znachor ) tells the story of a man who loses everything in life but gets a second chance at happiness when he reunites with his daughter years later. The film is now streaming on Netflix.
Professor Rafał Wilczur is a brain surgeon who is known to be a genius. He is a kind man who does not think twice before helping the needy. One day, Rafał’s wife, who is in love with another man, leaves him and takes their daughter with her.
Rafał goes to look for them and becomes a victim of mugging. Rafał’s friend, Professor Jerzy Dobraniecki, arrives there and witnesses him getting beaten up by his assailants. Dobraniecki is bitter about Rafał being made the chief surgeon over him, so he does not help Rafał and leaves him to die.
Although Rafał survives, he is assumed dead. Rafał loses his memory and does not remember anything about his life. He keeps getting the feeling that he needs to find someone, but he does not remember who that person is.
After wandering from place to place for fifteen years, he ends up settling down in a village. His daughter, Marysia, is working at a tavern in the same village, but even when they meet, they do not recognize each other.
Rafał has forgotten everything, but he has neither lost the skills of a surgeon nor the love that he has for his daughter. Will Rafał regain his memory and realize that Marysia is the person he has been looking for?
Performances
Leszek Lichota gives a convincing performance as Rafał. He depicts Rafał’s kindness and the fatherly love that he feels for Marysia with a becoming gentleness. Furthermore, it is easy to tell that he is a man who has nothing to call his own.
Maria Kowalska’s Marysia is a free-spirited woman who is quite charming. No matter what Marysia is feeling, Kowalska manages to hold the audience’s attention. Her chemistry with Ignacy Liss, who plays Leszek and is just as charming, is an added bonus.
Anna Szymańczyk, who plays Zofia, is loving, bold, and even funny at times. Although she plays a minor character, Zofia is one of the most entertaining characters in the film.
The film is marked by an ever-present sense of longing, an echo of the protagonist’s feelings. The idea that Rafał is seeking something that even he does not know dominates the film. It is conveyed in various ways, such as Rafał becoming troubled after looking at a young girl.
The attention to detail in the film is praiseworthy. From the roads to the light switches, every detail brings the Poland of the twentieth century to life. There is a notable scene in the film that captures people being held in awe of cinema when it was something new.
The film tells a sentimental story of a good man’s tragic life. Apart from Rafał’s story, the stories of other characters like Michał also leave an impact. However, it balances the emotional scenes with some very wholesome moments.
The film somehow manages to make Rafał’s serious trial funny. It sees various villagers testifying in Rafał’s favor. The trial, which consists of a series of comical testimonies, provides much-needed comic relief.
When it comes to pacing, the film somewhat struggles to find its footing. For the most part, the plot progresses at a slow pace, but the ending is quite hurried. Towards the end, all the major conflicts get resolved one after the other in the blink of an eye.
While Leszek and Marysia are a sweet couple, their love story is full of clichés. It is so full of overused tropes that it is devoid of any originality. Even the conflict is the one that has been seen in several films before.
Based on the popular Polish novel Znachor , Forgotten Love manages to distinguish itself from its source material, but it still lacks originality. That said, it is a film that takes the audience on an emotional journey.

‘Forgotten’ 2023 action movie is a breathtaking blockbuster well worth revisiting
The summer of 2023 was dominated by Barbie and Oppenheimer, meaning that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning went under the radar for many.
That includes this writer who decided pass on Mission: Impossible 7 at the theaters to save his money to experience ‘Barbenheimer’ the following week. However, I’ve now had the chance to see the movie at home and was blown away by how much I enjoyed it.
What is Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning about?
Originally dubbed ‘Part One’ (which has since been dropped), Dead Reckoning sees Tom Cruise return as Ethan Hunt as he and the rest of the IMF team spring into action after a next-generation Russian stealth submarine vanishes after a deadly accident.
The sub housed a highly advanced artificial intelligence called ‘The Entity’ and following the submarine’s disappearance, every world power and shadowy organization on the planet sets their sites on recovering it.
As Ethan begins his hunt for the rogue AI, he encounters faces both old and new and is left questioning who he can really trust.
It’s perhaps harsh to call a movie that made over $560 million at the box office ‘forgotten’ but if Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (released on July 12) didn’t have Oppenheimer and Barbie (released on July 19) to compete with, then the movie would almost certainly have enjoyed greater success at the box office.
・ STREAMING NOW: New Prime Video rom-com is one to avoid after scathing reviews call it ‘offensively boring’
Why we recommend it
There’s a reason why Tom Cruise has remained one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars for the last four decades. He’s almost always great and puts everything into his roles and that’s certainly the case here, too.
Beyond Cruise, the returning supporting characters are all given moments to shine, notably Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Foust and Simon Pegg’s Benji Dunn.
However, new arrival Hayley Atwell is a superb addition to the franchise, bringing both a devious wit and endearing vulnerability to her mysterious character, Grace.
In terms of its looming threat, a rogue AI may seem a little on the nose at first, given the real-world surge in AI usage in recent years, but Mission: Impossible’s handling of the Entity serves up a fresh and invigorating take to the table.
And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Mission: Impossible movie without some rip-roaring action set pieces and while Dead Reckoning can’t quite match the plane take-off scene from Rogue Nation, there are still some breathtaking scenes to marvel at.
Some, like a car chase through Rome and a perilous train ride, had me regretting not seeing Dead Reckoning in theaters.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is available to stream now from Paramount+ in the US.

Forgotten Love is centred around a broken family who are slated to reunite years later in very different circumstances. Also known by its Polish title, Znachor, the feature film is adapted from a popular novel from the 1930s.In fact, the coincidental occurrences that take place in the story feel like they could belong to any of the older Hindi films like Waqt (1965) or Yaadon Ki Baarat (1973).

Forgotten Love: Critique. The film's authenticity is bolstered by its meticulous representation of the 1930s era, achieved through the use of actual locations and meticulous production design. After two adaptations, with the 1982 version considered a Christmastime classic for Polish families, Forgotten Love can seem like a redundant take on the iconic Polish novel.
