What is Plastic Pollution?

The accumulation of plastic substances and objects in our natural environment, like waterbodies, soil, etc. is known as plastic pollution. This pollution hurts the natural environment, our resources, and even on animals around us. According to a UN report, more than 100 million marine animals die every year due to plastic waste alone. Some of the common plastic wastes are cigarette butts, food wrappers, plastic bottles, plastic grocery bags, plastic straws, etc.

Causes of Plastic Pollution

Several causes can be cited as reasons for plastic pollution. It is our improper disposal and management of plastic materials that causes plastic pollution. Plastic is often called ‘unnatural’ as it is created by humans and negatively affects the environment. Plastic is cheap and its elements are in abundance.

1. Single Use Plastic

It is the major cause of plastic pollution. Most of the plastic produced is used only once. Hence, named single-use plastic. The billions of plastic bags, bottles, food packaging and trays produced end up in landfills and water bodies. Even if we try our best to stop this single-use plastic, it will still end up in the same place.

2. Lack of Recycling Infrastructure

In developing and underdeveloped countries, there is a lack of plastic recycling infrastructure, which threatens the environment. These countries lack the necessary infrastructure for plastic waste disposal, which results in landfills and water pollution.

3. Improper Disposal

Improper disposal of plastic waste affects our food chain. Inadequate waste management and improper disposal of plastic items are major contributors to plastic pollution. Littering, dumping plastics in landfills, and improper disposal practices can result in plastic entering water bodies, soil, and the air.

5. Overconsumption of Plastic Products

Since its invention, plastic demand has always reached a new peak, driven by factors like population growth and consumer preferences, leading to higher production and disposal of plastics. This contributes to the accumulation of plastic waste in various ecosystems.

Our environment is not the only victim of plastic pollution. Our ecosystems, wildlife and our health are also affected by plastic waste. Plastic chokes marine wildlife, killing millions of marine animals every year. Plastic production is energy-intensive as the machines used require a significant amount of energy.

Every year, around 14 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in our oceans, damaging the marine environment and animals. The accumulation of plastic waste in water bodies can have long-term ecological consequences.

2. Soil Contamination

Improper disposal of plastic waste results in soil contamination. Plastics release harmful chemicals as they break down, affecting soil quality and potentially harming plants, animals, and microorganisms.

3. Harm to Wildlife

Domestic animals are often fed food entangled in plastic items. In India, a large number of cows and buffalos die as most people often have their food wrapped in plastic bags. The ingestion of plastic can lead to internal injuries, blockages, malnutrition, and death. Marine animals, in particular, are at risk as they can easily ingest or become entangled in plastic debris.

4. Microplastic Contamination

Although plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose, the larger plastic items break down into smaller particles called microplastics. Microplastics can contaminate water bodies, soil, and air, posing risks to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. They can also enter the food chain, potentially affecting human health.

5. Disruption of Ecosystem

Plastic pollution disrupts ecosystems by affecting the balance of various species and their interactions. The presence of plastic debris in natural habitats can lead to changes in biodiversity, nutrient cycles, and ecosystem function.

How to Beat Plastic Pollution?

Remember the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle strategy? Here’s a little different approach introduced by the United Nations Environment Protocol (UNEP): Reuse, Recycle, and Reorient. Through this approach, the UNEP has planned to reduce plastic waste by 80% in the next two decades.

We as plastic producers and consumers must take environmentally friendly actions and effectively implement this approach in our daily lives.

Firstly, we must eliminate unnecessary plastic, such as plastic packaging, reusing refillable water bottles, and every single-use plastic item.
Reducing plastic production will be the next step. We must advocate and support policies that regulate the plastic production, use, and disposal of plastics. Encouraging local representatives can greatly reduce overall plastic production and promote anti-plastic pollution measures
Promoting and implementing recycling programs and guidelines will help reduce the overall production of plastic waste. It can be done by practising the separation of recyclables from non-recyclables and ensuring their proper disposal.
Identification of which plastic item is useful and which is not must be done. Recycling is a great way to beat plastic pollution, but it alone cannot achieve the desired goals.
Avoiding microplastics can help in combating plastic pollution. We must choose personal care products that do not contain microbeads. The plastic clothes are made of synthetic fabrics, which shed microfibers during washing.

To eliminate plastic pollution, we must unite as one and take immediate action. We only have one home and we must do everything in our power to save it from such harmful events.

Plastic Pollution is affecting the whole earth, including mankind, wildlife, and aquatic life. It is spreading like a disease which has no cure. We all must realize the harmful impact it has on our lives so as to avert it as soon as possible.

ಕಾರ್ಬನ್ ಮಾನಾಕ್ಸೈಡ್, ಹಸಿರುಮನೆ ಅನಿಲಗಳಾದ ಕಾರ್ಬನ್ ಡೈಆಕ್ಸೈಡ್, ಮೀಥೇನ್, ಕ್ಲೋರೋ-ಫ್ಲೋರೋಕಾರ್ಬನ್ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿಗಳು ಕಾರ್ಖಾನೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ರಸ್ತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಓಡುವ ವಾಹನಗಳ ಚಿಮಣಿಗಳಿಂದ ಹೊರಬರುವ ಹೊಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆಯಾಗುತ್ತವೆ.

ಕೃಷಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅತಿಯಾದ ರಸಗೊಬ್ಬರ ಮತ್ತು ಕೀಟನಾಶಕಗಳ ಬಳಕೆಯಿಂದ ಮಣ್ಣಿನ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯ ಉಂಟಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕಲುಷಿತ ಮಣ್ಣಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಆಹಾರವನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನುವುದು ಮಾನವ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಆರೋಗ್ಯದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಕಾರಾತ್ಮಕ ಪರಿಣಾಮ ಬೀರುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯವು ಅದರ ಮೇಲ್ಮೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹರಿಯುವ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲೂ ಹರಡುತ್ತದೆ.

2-3 ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್ 1984 ರಂದು ಈ ಅನಿಲ ಸ್ಥಾವರದ ಕಾರ್ಖಾನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಷಕಾರಿ ಮೈಕ್ ಗ್ಯಾಸ್ (ಮೀಥೈಲ್ ಐಸೊ ಸೈನೈಡ್) ಸೋರಿಕೆಯಿಂದಾಗಿ ಕೆಲವೇ ಗಂಟೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 2500 ಜನರು ಸಾವನ್ನಪ್ಪಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಜನರು ಗಾಯಗೊಂಡರು. ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳೂ ಸತ್ತವು. ಈ ಘಟನೆಯನ್ನು ಭೋಪಾಲ್ ಅನಿಲ ದುರಂತ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

In a clean-up drive organised across 250 sites, more than 97% of the total waste collected was plastic

In the last decade alone, the world has produced more plastic than it has in the whole century. India alone generates 60% of the world’s plastic waste, which has adverse impacts on the health of our mountains, oceans and rivers. In a state like Sikkim, the remote locations of villages add to the multiple challenges of managing plastic waste.

Through a brand audit, the groups that conducted the clean-up also aim to generate awareness on the type of plastics that are polluting the Himalayas and also assess brands of the plastic trash collected from the sites. In the future, the Integrated Mountain Initiative and Zero Waste Himalaya will strengthen the extended producer responsibility with companies, and support local entrepreneurs on developing alternatives to single-use plastic items. The group will advocate for five key initiatives following the audit (i) policies to stop single-use plastic and multilayered plastic in the mountains, (ii) extended producer responsibility, especially for Multilayered Plastic, PET bottles (iii) no incineration of waste in the sacred and ecologically sensitive Himalayas, (iv) tourism and defense integrated in waste management systems and (v) special resource support to the mountain states considering the challenges of geography and connectivity.

The Zero Waste Himalaya group is a platform of organisations and individuals concerned with the increasing problem of waste across the fragile Himalayan landscape and advocating actively against plastic pollution. In Sikkim - Darjeeling, the group is spearheaded by organisations and institutions like WWF-India, DLR Prerna, Ecotourism and Conservation Society of Sikkim (ECOSS), Khangchendzonga Conservation Committee (KCC), ATREE, State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD), and Rural Management & Development Department (RMDD).

The group works with local self-government institutions, community groups, educational institutions, faith based organizations and media in promoting zero waste practices, which focuses on waste reduction, resource recovery and is grounded on the belief that individual actions matter. At a broader level, the group also advocates for implementing concepts of extended producer responsibility, closed loop economies and clean production as meaningful alternative to the present linear system of production and consumption.

Zero Waste Himalaya movement advocates strongly against the use of single- use plastic items, which was closely linked to the theme of ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ during World Environment Day 2018.

ನೀರಿನ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯವು ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ, ಇದು ಮಾನವರು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ರೀತಿಗಳಿಂದ ಬಾಧಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ನೀರಿನ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯವು ಮಾನವ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳಿಂದ ಉತ್ಪತ್ತಿಯಾಗುವ ವಿಷಕಾರಿ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯಕಾರಕಗಳಿಂದ ಕುಡಿಯುವ ನೀರಿನ ತೊಂದರೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ನಗರಗಳ ಹರಿವು, ಕೃಷಿ, ಕೈಗಾರಿಕಾ, ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯ, ಭೂಮಿಯಿಂದ ಸೋರಿಕೆ, ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಮಾನವ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳಂತಹ ಅನೇಕ ಮೂಲಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ನೀರನ್ನು ಕಲುಷಿತಗೊಳಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯಕಾರಕಗಳು ಪರಿಸರಕ್ಕೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಹಾನಿಕಾರಕವಾಗಿದೆ.

ತಾಜಾ ನೀರು ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲಿನ ಜೀವನದ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಮೂಲವಾಗಿದೆ. ಯಾವುದೇ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಯು ಆಹಾರವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಕೆಲವು ದಿನಗಳವರೆಗೆ ಬದುಕಬಹುದು, ಆದರೆ ನೀರು ಮತ್ತು ಆಮ್ಲಜನಕವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಒಂದು ನಿಮಿಷವೂ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ. ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಿರುವ ಜನಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯಿಂದಾಗಿ ಕುಡಿಯುವ, ಕೈಗಾರಿಕಾ ಬಳಕೆ, ಕೃಷಿ, ಈಜುಕೊಳಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಜಲಕ್ರೀಡಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರಗಳಂತಹ ಉದ್ದೇಶಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ನೀರಿನ ಬೇಡಿಕೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಿದೆ.

ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲಿರುವ ಸರೋವರ, ನದಿ, ಸಾಗರಗಳ ನೀರು ಕಲುಷಿತವಾಗುವುದನ್ನು ” ಜಲಮಾಲಿನ್ಯ ” ಎನ್ನುವರು. ಜಲ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯದ ಬಹುಪಾಲು ವಿವಿಧ ಮಾನವ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳಿಂದ ಉಂಟಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ವಾಸ್ತವವಾಗಿ, ತಿಮಿಂಗಿಲಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಜಲಚರಗಳ ಸಾಮೂಹಿಕ ಸಾವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾನವರು ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರರಾಗಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದ ವಿವಿಧ ಕಡಲತೀರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತೀರಕ್ಕೆ ಬೀಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ನಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸರ್ಕಾರವು ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಯೋಜನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಘೋಷಿಸಿದ್ದರೂ ಜಲಮಾಲಿನ್ಯವನ್ನು ನಿಯಂತ್ರಿಸುವ ಕ್ರಮಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸುವ ತುರ್ತು ಅಗತ್ಯವಿದೆ.

ಜಲ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯದ ಕಾರಣಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪರಿಣಾಮಗಳು:

ತಾಜಾ ನೀರಿನ ಕೊರತೆಯು ಭಾರತೀಯ ನಗರಗಳು ಎದುರಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಳೆಯಿಂದಾಗಿ ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರದ ಮರಾಠವಾಡ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಂತಹ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳು ಭೀಕರ ಬರ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಎದುರಿಸುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಇಂತಹ ವಿಪತ್ತಿನ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಗಳ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರತವು ನೈಸರ್ಗಿಕ ನೀರಿನ ಮೂಲಗಳನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಶುದ್ಧ ನೀರನ್ನು ಕಲುಷಿತವಾಗದಂತೆ ಉಳಿಸುವತ್ತ ಗಮನಹರಿಸಬೇಕು. ನೀರಿನ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯದ ಕೆಲವು ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಕಾರಣಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪರಿಣಾಮಗಳನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಯೋಣ,

1.ಕೊಳಚೆ ನೀರು:

ಮನೆಗಳು, ಕೃಷಿ ಭೂಮಿ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಿಂದ ಅಪಾರ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದ ಕಸವನ್ನು ಕೆರೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ನದಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಸುರಿಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯಗಳು ಹಾನಿಕಾರಕ ರಾಸಾಯನಿಕಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಜೀವಾಣುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುತ್ತವೆ, ಇದು ವಿಷಯುಕ್ತ ನೀರನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಜಲಚರ ಸಸ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಾನಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

3.ಕೈಗಾರಿಕಾ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯ:

ಜಲಮೂಲಗಳ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಕೈಗಾರಿಕೆಗಳು ಅಪಾರ ಕೊಡುಗೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಮಥುರಾದಲ್ಲಿನ ಕೈಗಾರಿಕೆಗಳು ಯಮುನಾ ನದಿಯ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಗೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲಾಗದ ಹಾನಿಯನ್ನುಂಟುಮಾಡಿವೆ. ಬೃಹತ್ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದ ಕೈಗಾರಿಕಾ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಅರಬ್ಬಿ ಸಮುದ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಬಂಗಾಳ ಕೊಲ್ಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸುರಿಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಇದು ಸಮುದ್ರ ಜೀವಿಗಳನ್ನು ದುರ್ಬಲಗೊಳಿಸಿದೆ.

4.ತೈಲ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯ:

ಜಲ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯವನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸುವ ಮಾರ್ಗಗಳು

ಜಲ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯದ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲು ಮತ್ತು ಅದನ್ನು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡಲು, ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ ಮಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿರುವ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕ್ರಮಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಬೇಕು, ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ :-
