What is diwali.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most significant festivals in Indian culture. It’s a Hindu festival, but also celebrated by Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists. Known as the “Festival of Lights,” it symbolizes the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.”

Diwali is a five-day festival that usually takes place between mid-October and mid-November, depending on the lunar calendar. Each day of Diwali has its own associated traditions, but the festival is most famous for the millions of lights— in the form of oil lamps, candles, and fireworks— that are lit on the night of the new moon to create a spectacular display.

The specific narratives and traditions associated with Diwali can vary greatly depending on regional and cultural differences. Some celebrate it in honor of the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana from exile, as told in the Hindu epic Ramayana. Others associate it with the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi.

Traditions often include cleaning and decorating homes, lighting lamps and candles inside and outside of homes, exchanging gifts, feasting on sweets and snacks, and gathering with family and community members. It’s a time for renewal and rejoicing.

Where is it Celebrated?

India – As the country with the largest Hindu population, Diwali is widely celebrated across all regions of India, although customs and traditions can vary significantly between different areas.

Nepal – Known as Tihar or Swanti, it is a significant festival in Nepal and shares many similarities with Diwali celebrations in India.

Sri Lanka – This country has a significant Hindu Tamil population who celebrate Diwali.

Malaysia – Diwali is a public holiday in Malaysia and is celebrated by the country’s significant Indian population.

Singapore – Diwali is a public holiday in Singapore, which has a sizeable Indian-origin population.

Fiji – With a significant Indo-Fijian population, Diwali is an important festival and a public holiday in Fiji.

Mauritius – With a majority Hindu population, Diwali is a major festival in Mauritius.

Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname – These countries have significant populations of Indo-Caribbean people, and Diwali is a public holiday there.

Pakistan and Bangladesh – While these countries are predominantly Muslim, their Hindu and Sikh minorities do observe Diwali.

In recent years, Diwali has been celebrated in an increasing number of locations around the world, and it has gained a significant presence in multicultural celebrations in countries with large Indian diaspora populations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.

Fun Diwali Activities for Your Classroom

Diwali, Hindu festival of lights celebration. Diya oil lamps against dark background,

ELA-based Diwali activities give your middle and high school students the chance to work on English and Reading skills in a fun and engaging way. They can also introduce students to different cultures or literary genres with which they may not already be familiar.

In 2023, Diwali falls on Sunday, November 12th . The following free Diwali activities for students—including a word search, a “virtual field trip” to India’s Diwali festival, and a comprehensive ELA activity set about the holiday—are sure to impress even the most reluctant ELA learners. We’ve also included an original Piqosity reading comprehension quiz of a delicacy-themed article from The Times of India along with original  quiz questions to answer after reading!

Diwali Reading and Writing Activities

1. diwali word search.

fun diwali activities. #1, word search

The first of our featured Diwali activities is this printable Diwali word search, perfect for all grade levels. Students will search for key terms which illuminate aspects of traditional Diwali celebration practices and the origins of this light-filled holiday.

Using this Diwali activity at the start of class is a great way to get the wheels turning inside a student’s head. When they encounter a word that is unknown to them (“rangoli”, for instance), they will likely wonder about its meaning and origins. These lines of inquiry can lead them to answer the question, “What are the traditions of Diwali?”

Word searches in general help to reinforce key concepts in an English Language Arts education, including searching for context clues, increasing vocabulary, and spelling practice. You could even use the word bank from this word search as the basis for a Diwali-themed spelling test—two Diwali activities in one!

2. Diwali Poster Presentation and Art Projects

Diwali reading comprehension, poster presentation, and art project freebie.

This printable packet includes images about the holiday to use for the posters and  the reading comprehension exercise, so there are no outside resources required—other than the poster board and markers! A rubric is also included to guide your students as they create their presentation.

This resource is super adaptable to your classroom’s needs. If you teach middle schoolers, expand the project by having them do their own research about particular Diwali-related topics, too. If you don’t have the poster board or markers to spare, a “note catcher” template is included for individual work, or you can substitute the physical presentations with slideshows. Plus, if your class is in need of an art project to work their creative muscles, two crafting ideas are included at the end!

3. Diwali Virtual Field Trip

fun diwali activities. #3, virtual field trip.

This virtual exploration of the story of Diwali and its celebration in India is gratifying for students of all grade levels, but geared primarily towards middle schoolers and younger students. One of our more involved Diwali activities, this exercise enriches both students’ English Language Arts and Social Studies education.

In this activity, students access four outside resources that educate them on Diwali and its traditions: an informative National Geographic video on the holiday, an interactive web article, an immersive 360-degree tour of famous sites in India, and a short documentary on Diwali. Together, these resources help students explore the holiday as if they were visiting India during the Diwali celebration.

Students then use the information they’ve learned in the videos to fill out a set of eleven accompanying worksheets, which gauge students’ understanding of the videos and allow them to creatively express themselves. as they are asked to demonstrate comprehension of the videos/article and write about what they’ve learned.

Like many of our Diwali activities, this is a flexible activity perfect for both in-person and remote learning. Worksheets can be distributed digitally or in print, and students can watch the videos as a class or on their own time. Teachers can pick from the eleven worksheets to find the best fit for their curriculum, and as an added bonus, answer keys and rubrics are provided as well.

3. Diwali Close Reading, Vocabulary, & Writing Exercise

fun diwali activities. #4, history activity

Another of our printable Diwali activities, this exercise focuses on developing students’ close reading skills through an exploration of the history of Diwali.

First, students read a passage (aimed at middle-school readers) that describes Diwali’s traditions and origin. Topics include a discussion of the use of candle holders and other decorations and the purpose and technique of Rangoli design. The passage is followed by eight reading comprehension questions and two critical thinking questions.

Students are also quizzed on key vocabulary words from the passage, encouraging the use of context clues to identify unfamiliar words. An accompanying long-form writing activity asks students to use their language skills in conjunction with their newfound knowledge of Diwali. The activity concludes with a creative task: students have the opportunity to fill in an outline of a rangoli design with bright colors, and are encouraged to draw their own design!

This packet of Diwali activities offers a perfect opportunity to lead a class Diwali celebration without abjuring engaging classwork. To enhance your classroom even more, seven graphic posters focused on key concepts related to the holiday are also provided.

Diwali Reading Comprehension Questions by Piqosity

A beautiful festival full of bright colors, delicious food, and deep tradition, Diwali is a cherished Hindu holiday. But traditions evolve; the following passage is an excerpt from an article in The Times of India focusing on how the traditional sweets market is adapting to modern life.

Piqosity’s incredible team has written three exclusive reading comprehension questions to accompany this passage. Each question engages with a different area of English Language Arts, and the questions are progressively more difficult. (Answers below.)

Reading Comprehension Questions

1. The title of this passage contains…

A. a metaphor. B. an oxymoron. C. anaphora. D. a simile.

2. Which of the following ideas is NOT identified in the text?

A. Younger people are eating more traditional sweets. B. Sweets-makers are overcoming supply shortages. C. Eating sweets is popular during the Diwali season. D. Sweets-makers are coming up with new innovations in time for Diwali.

3. “Mithaas” (line 10) is a Hindi word. Based on the context given by the passage, which of the following is most likely to be its meaning in English?

A. Cupcakes B. Celebrations C. Sweets D. Chocolate

Passage Answer Key and Explanations

This question asks about the title.  Anaphora is the repetition of a word/phrase at the beginning of multiple lines/sentences—the title is one sentence with no repeated words, so answer C is incorrect. An oxymoron is a pair of two words that contrast each other, such as “small crowd” —there is no oxymoron in the title, so answer B is also incorrect.  The title compares the popularity and success of traditional Hyderabadi sweets to hot cakes using the linking word “like”. A simile is a comparison between two or more things using “like” or “as”, while a metaphor is a comparison that does not use “like” or “as”. Thus, the correct answer choice is answer D, “ a simile .”
Answer  A, “Younger people are eating more traditional sweets,” is identified in lines 20-35: “…the demand for our Hyderabadi specialities like ashrafi, badam ki jaali and jouzi halwa is sky high this year, especially among youngsters….we have been coming up with more innovations to introduce classic Hyderabadi sweets like jouzi halwa, ashrafi and dum ka puraan and their rich history to the younger lot. Jouzi halwa, for instance, used to be the last Nizam’s favourite dessert. We’re delighted to see that more people are going for these sweets again…”  Answer C, “Eating sweets is popular during the Diwali season,” is also identified in the text. It is based on the overall premise of the passage and specifically discussed in lines 12-14: “At the bustling Hameedi Confectioners in Nampally, it’s business as usual with scores of shoppers walking in to place orders ahead of Diwali.” Finally, Answer D, “Sweets-makers are coming up with new innovations in time for Diwali,” is identified in lines 29-32: “….we have been coming up with more innovations to introduce classic Hyderabadi sweets like jouzi halwa, ashrafi and dum ka puraan and their rich history to the younger lot,” and in lines 36-49: “Some of the sweet outlets have even prepared special hampers for their international customers. ‘These gift hampers include most of the traditional Hyderabadi sweets…’”  Answer B, “Sweets-makers are overcoming supply shortages,” is the correct answer choice because it is not identified in the text. There is no mention of any supply shortages in the passage.
We are looking for a word that can replace “mithaas” in context: “…this festive season, as Hyderabadis are going all out to celebrate in a big way, they want to share a bite of Hyerabadi mithaas with family and friends, both near and far,” (lines 8-11).  “Mithaas” must be a food item, because people want to “share a bite” of it. So, answer B, “Celebrations,” is incorrect. Answers D and A, “Chocolate” and “Cupcakes,” could be true, but they’re very specific—the passage doesn’t mention either food by name, so there’s no way to know which, if either, would be a better choice. So, these answer choices are also incorrect.  This leaves answer C, “ Sweets ”, which is the correct answer choice. “Sweets” is used throughout the passage to describe the delicacies people are eating for Diwali, so it’s a logical deduction that people “…want to share a bite of Hyerabadi [sweets] with family and friends…” (9-11).

What do you know about Diwali? It's one of the biggest events in the Indian calendar. And that means big celebrations in multicultural cities in Britain, too. Find out all about the festival and how it is celebrated in Britain.

Instructions

Do the preparation task first. Then read the article and do the exercises to check your understanding.

Preparation

An indian festival.

Did you know that Diwali is one of the biggest events in the Indian calendar? It is celebrated around the world by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. In London, Birmingham, Belfast, Edinburgh, Leicester and other multicultural cities in Britain, British Asians celebrate Diwali. Celebrations include firework displays, Diwali lanterns, music, dancing, plays, as well as delicious traditional Indian food and sweets.

What does Diwali mean?

Diwali (or Deepavali) is also known as the Festival of Light. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit language and means 'row of lamps'. In South Asia, homes, shops and streets are decorated with small oil lamps called diyas. During Diwali, patterns, called rangoli, are drawn on floors. The lotus flower is one of the most popular patterns to draw. Diwali is celebrated every year on the darkest night of the month in October or November. The exact date changes every year to coincide with the new moon. With the new moon Diwali marks a new beginning and for many people it symbolises joy, love, reflection, resolution, forgiveness, light and knowledge. Diwali is traditionally a time for cleaning your home, decorating your house with lights and candles, wearing new clothes, painting henna tattoos on hands, giving presents, and getting together with family and friends.

London and Leicester

If you have ever visited London, the capital of England, you will know that it is a truly multicultural city where people of different ethnic groups and religions live, work, study and go to school. Depending on the time of year you can join in with celebrations for Christmas, Eid or Diwali in London’s Trafalgar Square. Diwali is celebrated every year in this world-famous square with Bhangra dancing around the fountains, vegetarian food sold at stalls, and free performances of South Asian contemporary and classical music and dance.

Leicester, in the north of England, has one of the most important Diwali celebrations outside of India. The Festival of Light in Leicester starts with a display of thousands of lights along Belgrave Road, also known as ‘The Golden Mile’. There is Bollywood singing and dancing. You can go late-night shopping and restaurants stay open late too. All this is followed by spectacular fireworks. Tourists, visitors and local residents are all welcome to enjoy the fun! Leicester’s Asian community say that this is the best (as well as the biggest!) Diwali celebration outside of India.

#HappyDiwali

Is Diwali all about tradition? These days many people in the UK celebrate the Festival of Light with electric fairy lights instead of old-fashioned oil lamps. Instead of traditional gold and silver gifts, it is common to give money to put towards electronic gifts or iTunes credits. Shopping has changed too. Now many people buy their Diwali presents online rather than visiting a shop. Family and friends can communicate easily via social media and #HappyDiwali tweets spread the message of hope and light around the world.

According to CBSE, while assigning and preparing homework for the students, it is important to note they are able to develop the skills like relating, thinking, concluding, inferring. Homework should be such that the student neither feel it burdensome nor they lose interest in the subject matter. Moreover it is useful in providing them a happy experience. Homework therefore needs to be thought about and worked upon differently. Emphasis should be given on Vedic mathematics, designing quality homework rather than its quantity. Download NCERT Books and apps based on latest CBSE Syllabus.

Encompassing the aforesaid ideas, the CBSE has brought forth a Manual, “Alternatives to Holiday Homework” for classes VI to VIII. It is collection of ideas transformed into suggestive activities that are creative, interesting, meaningful and interactive, enhancing various skills, directly or indirectly related to subject matter providing students to enhance their learning and gaining knowledge based on NCERT Books following the latest CBSE Syllabus.

  • Holiday Homework for Class 8 Science
  • Holiday Homework for Class 8 Social Science

A well rounded development of individual knowledge happens not only from textbooks and formal education but more from the learner’s personal experiences, individual inquisitive nature and social surroundings. Homework is an area of importance and to make it more relevant for the NCERT Books classes 6th, 7th and 8th, appropriate strategies and meaningful activities may be suggested to the schools that give more time to child to explore the environment to develop creative thinking.

These activities (like OTBA for class 9 & 11 ) would be so framed that they keep the child interested in subjects and therefore would also help in enhancing the learning power. Homework is one of the areas that need urgent attention. As the students of class VI, VII and VIII develop a certain learning style and want to know and find more and more. Efforts should be made to make homework more creative and interesting so that the students do not feel burdensome while doing the same and the ultimate purpose of providing homework is served.

A survey was conducted through questionnaire prepared by CBSE to collect feedback from parents, teachers, students and other educationists on “Alternatives to Homework at Upper Primary Level” for Class Sixth, Seventh and Eighth so that appropriate strategies and meaningful activities can be designed and suggested to schools. The questions were directed to know the ideal quantity and purpose of the homework, whether homework should be assigned in all the subjects, internet usage should be a part of the homework or not, how homework helps in teaching.

Keeping in view emerging issues, there is a need to think about giving quality homework emphasizing on acquiring applied learning skills. Few points can be kept in mind while designing a quality homework by teachers: 1, Provide students capacity building activities which are followed up and acknowledged like drawing, creative writing, making puzzles, stories, plays, online games, reading online books and craft.

2. Provide them assignment sheets which improve their reading & writing abilities. Homework must enable the student to practice a skill independently. 3. A possible discussion can be held with different children on what they would like to do at home to improve in which ever area they deem necessary. Homework must be designed in a way that maximizes the chances of its completion by the students.

4. Parents should be able to understand the child’s needs and schools suggestions on how to learn mathematics, logical reasoning, etc. by doing puzzles, writing letters, reading to elders from the newspapers, making household lists, recipe making and cooking. 5. Learners who have dyslexia or number difficulty should have practice assignments overcoming their problems.

The child in middle school have a keenness to discover more and prepare for the examination. Learning is about developing new faculties, which become useful as an adult. The years 12 to 15 are years when rules become important, and doing well, excelling are given importance both at home and in the class. As the child grows chronically his/her emotional maturity also grows and there are interests which are beyond just what lessons can give.

The homework assigned should: 1. enhance study habits and practice skills (which learners are able to perform independently) 2. reinforce necessary skills both scholastic and co-scholastic among the learners. 3. enable learners to become independent learners and thinkers and develop among them 21st century skills so that they can participate in Make in India in future. 4. lead to the improvement in the academic achievement of the learner.

5. expand on the existing knowledge of the learners and be a part of the already acquired competencies in the classroom. 6. not put unneeded pressure or stress by including new learning material or difficult material to be worked upon by learners themselves. 7. be CBSE Syllabus based and as per developmental needs of the learners. 8. not require specific resources or technology which is not accessible to all learners. 9. have clearly defined, purposeful, creative and engaging activities.

It is also advised that teachers can refer to Life Skills Manuals, Health Manuals and Environmental Education Manuals which contain age appropriate and interesting activities which can be taken up by the learners individually. These activities can be assigned to learners so as to enhance their life skills, values and make them health conscious.

Homework is needed, and necessary for a teacher to be able to follow up with each child. The correction and feedback on homework is an important input that helps both parents and children to follow up and improve in areas which are needed. The recourse extra classes, can be reduced if the homework is used for learning improvement and acquisition of diverse skills. • To inform the audience

Respected Principal, teachers, and dear friends,

Today, I stand before you to talk about one of the most vibrant and cherished festivals in India – Diwali. Known as the festival of lights, Diwali holds great significance in our country and is celebrated with immense joy and enthusiasm by people of various religions and cultures. It is a time when the entire nation comes together to embrace the triumph of good over evil and to spread happiness and love.

Diwali, celebrated in the months of October and November, is a festival that resonates with the spirit of unity and togetherness. Its roots lie deep in Hindu mythology , where the tale of Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana is depicted. Lord Rama, along with his devoted wife Sita and loyal brother Lakshman, embarked on a challenging journey during their fourteen-year exile. They faced numerous obstacles, including the kidnapping of Sita by Ravana, which led to an epic battle and the ultimate triumph of good.

In Ayodhya, Lord Rama’s return was celebrated with immense joy and exuberance. The people of Ayodhya illuminated the entire city with rows of clay lamps, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. This tradition continues to this day, as people decorate their homes with beautiful lights, candles, and diyas to ward off evil and welcome the blessings of God and Goddesses, particularly Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

The preparation for Diwali begins weeks in advance, as families engage in thorough cleaning and decoration of their homes. New clothes are worn, and delectable sweets are prepared. The exchange of gifts and greetings among friends and relatives strengthens the bonds of love and friendship. The festival becomes a time for joyous get-togethers, where people throw parties, dance, sing, and indulge in scrumptious meals.

However, as we celebrate Diwali, we must also be mindful of its drawbacks. The bursting of firecrackers, though a traditional practice, has led to unfortunate accidents and harm to both life and property. Additionally, the smoke and noise pollution caused by fireworks pose health hazards and harm our environment. It is our collective responsibility to exercise caution and find alternative ways to celebrate Diwali while preserving our well-being and the beauty of our surroundings.

Diwali is not merely a festival; it is a reflection of our values and traditions. It reminds us to choose goodness over evil, light over darkness, and unity over division. It teaches us the importance of spreading happiness, compassion, and peace in our lives and society. Diwali brings people together, transcending barriers of religion, caste, and creed. It is a festival that unites the diverse fabric of our nation.

As we celebrate Diwali, let us also extend our love and warmth to those in need. Let us share our joy and blessings with the less fortunate, and make this festival a time of giving and gratitude.

In conclusion, Diwali is not just an ordinary festival; it is a celebration of our cultural heritage, faith, and the triumph of good over evil. It holds a deep-rooted significance in our hearts and serves as a reminder of the values that bind us together as a nation. Let us celebrate Diwali responsibly, respecting the traditions and customs while also embracing the need for a sustainable and inclusive celebration.

May this Diwali illuminate our lives with joy, prosperity, and harmony. May it bring us closer to our loved ones and inspire us to spread love and kindness to all.

With this, I conclude my speech. Thank you all for your patience and cooperation.
