Don't stress out over your planning manager resume format

Remember, the elaborate design of your planning manager resume isn't what impresses recruiters most. They are primarily searching for candidates who meet the job requirements. The main aim of your resume should be to clearly and concisely explain why employers should hire you.

Here are four straightforward steps to consider in your planning manager resume design:

  • Organize your resume based on experience : Start with your most recent roles. Besides using reverse chronological order, choose jobs relevant to the position you're applying for.
  • Include your contact details (and portfolio or LinkedIn link) in your resume's header to ensure recruiters can easily reach you. If considering adding a professional photo, check acceptable practices in different countries first.
  • Don't omit essential planning manager resume sections such as the summary or objective, experience, and education. These sections should reflect your career progression and align with job requirements.
  • Maintain conciseness in your resume. For those with less than ten years of experience, a one-page format is advisable.

Regarding the format to submit your planning manager resume, PDF is preferable . PDFs are more likely to maintain their formatting when processed through recruitment software or ATS, saving you time in the application process.

When selecting a font for your planning manager resume, consider the following:

  • Choose ATS-friendly fonts such as Exo 2, Volkhov, Lato, etc., to keep your resume's content legible;
  • All serif and sans-serif fonts are easily readable by ATS;
  • While Arial and Times New Roman are common choices, opting for unique typography can help your resume stand out.

What to do if you don't have any experience

It's quite often that candidates without relevant work experience apply for a more entry-level role - and they end up getting hired.

Candidate resumes without experience have these four elements in common:

  • Instead of listing their experience in reverse-chronological format (starting with the latest), they've selected a functional-skill-based format. In that way, planning manager resumes become more focused on strengths and skills
  • Transferrable skills - or ones obtained thanks to work and life experience - have become the core of the resume
  • Within the objective, you'd find career achievements, the reason behind the application, and the unique value the candidate brings about to the specific role
  • Candidate skills are selected to cover basic requirements, but also show any niche expertise.

Choosing the Right Resume Format for Strategic Planning

When creating your strategic planning resume, consider the reverse chronological, functional, or combination format for showcasing your skills and experience. Each format has its unique advantages for presenting your qualifications effectively.

Reverse Chronological

The reverse chronological resume format lists your professional experience from the most to the least recent. It showcases a clear timeline of your career growth , making it easy for hiring managers to see how you've advanced in strategic planning.

This format is particularly effective for those with a strong work history in strategy development or project management roles .

Employers prefer this layout because it quickly highlights your progression and major accomplishments in corporate strategy or business strategy positions . It's ideal if you're aiming for roles like strategic planning manager, strategy manager, or any post requiring extensive experience.

Now, let's explore other formats to find the best fit for you.

The functional resume format emphasizes your skills and experience rather than focusing on your work history. This can be beneficial if you have gaps in your employment or are changing careers .

Start with a strong summary statement that highlights your key skills and achievements, then list your relevant skills and experiences in separate sections. Tailor the content to match the job description, showcasing how your abilities align with the role.

Combination

Consider using a combination resume format for strategic planning if you want to emphasize both your relevant skills and work experience . This format allows you to showcase your abilities while also highlighting your career progression , making it ideal for those with a solid mix of skills and experience in strategic planning roles .

By combining the best of both worlds, a combination resume can effectively demonstrate your qualifications to potential employers , increasing your chances of landing an interview.

Formatting Guidelines

Choose a simple, clean layout for your strategic planning resume. Use clear headings and bullet points to make it easy to read. Stick to a professional font like Arial or Calibri in size 10-12 for the main text, and slightly larger for section titles.

Include plenty of white space to avoid overcrowding and use bold or italics sparingly for emphasis .

Adding a Splash of Creativity

Infuse creativity by using a unique resume layout , incorporating eye-catching design elements , and adding a pop of color to draw attention. Consider integrating infographics or charts to showcase your strategic planning achievements in a visually appealing manner.

Emphasize your personality and passion by including an engaging career summary that reflects your enthusiasm for strategic planning, along with any innovative strategies you have devised.
