An Overview of the GAS Strand and Curriculum

Senior high school (SHS) aims to prepare students with the skills and competencies they need for their desired college courses. This is why many SHS students choose to take up strands that have specialized subjects. However, there will always be students who are still undecided about what they will be taking up at the tertiary level and what career they want to pursue. That’s why the GAS strand in SHS in the Philippines was designed.

The GAS strand is created to cater to students who prefer a broader range of studies rather than specific fields. It offers SHS students the flexibility to choose electives from various strands, which helps in choosing a university degree. This article provides an overview of this strand including some courses that they can take for successful career paths in the future. 

What is GAS? 

GAS is an acronym for General Academic Strand. It takes a general approach to prepare students for university life. Compared to other strands, students can expect to tackle different disciplines. This can cover various subjects and topics such as Humanities, Management, Social Sciences, and even Organization. 

Advantages of Taking GAS in SHS in the Philippines

The GAS program exposes senior high school students to a range of subjects, providing them the opportunity to discover which subject they are best suited for. Even with its exploratory approach, there are many advantages of taking the GAS strand in SHS in the Philippines. 

Great selection of subjects

Students in the GAS strand can expect to take on an excellent selection of subjects. These include general curriculum subjects like:

There is a wide range of subjects tackled here, from Applied Economics to Creative Writing to Philippine Politics. These can be ideal for those who are leaning towards the liberal arts especially if you’re interested in communication arts, legal management, or even journalism. You are provided with a rich educational background that you can carry over to your tertiary education. 

It can be the same for those who want to pursue education. Taking this wide array of subjects can give you a solid foundation and idea of what you can specialize in for your education degree.

Another common misconception of many is that all those in the GAS strand don’t know what they’ll be taking up in college. However, by gaining exposure to a variety of subjects, the GAS program enables senior high school students to make a more informed choice about their undergraduate program and future career path.

The General Academic Strand (GAS) is a senior high school educational track that equips students for college-level studies and a variety of professional pathways. Career Pathways for General Academic Strand Graduates:

  • Higher Education -Students who enroll in the General Academic Strand are prepared for a range of degree programs at colleges and institutions. Online Games are video games attracting millions of players especially young adults all around the world. Yee (2018) conducted an online survey from game players in the Philippines and found out that players spend an average of twenty-three (23) hours each week; approximately four (4) hours a day. Online games have been deeply embedded in the daily lives of gamers. Young adults play these games just for fun, as a stress reliever, and/or an escape from the household house not knowing that it may lead to poor academic performance. The Descriptive Method is used in this study. It aims to determine the effects of online games on the academic performance of selected GAS/PA Grade 12 students of Bestlink College of the Philippines. This method uses interviews, survey questionnaires, and simple statistics to analyze the data collected. The questionnaires were floated to fifty (50) students randomly selected from GAS Grade 12. The data collected were tabulated and analyzed to determine the effects of online games on the students’ academic performance. Many students who participated in the survey had identified several causes and effects of online games in the academic performance of GAS Grade 12 students in Bestlink College of the Philippines. The respondents made use of the different technological media, not to mention the presence of computer shops around the vicinity making online games accessible. Most gamers, mostly young adult males, spent several hours playing online games which resulted in the lack of sleep, eventually leading to absenteeism, inactivity in the different class activities, and other signs of personal anxiety. They developed an addiction to games, giving it priority than reviewing lesson/s in preparation for the quizzes, long tests, and periodical examinations. Due to excessive playing, players often leave their school work unattended resulting in poor academic performance and, eventually, failing grades. The results show that the scholastic rating of the gamers was very low, if not failing grades. These findings demonstrate the need for intervention to make the gamers realize the importance to prioritize studies over online games. Parents and teachers should work together to counteract the raising problems brought about by too much online gaming.

It seems logical that every senior high school student is partial to his chosen strand. Learning anything interesting is always cool after all. But for those who are truly curious about pursuing the General Academic Strand (GAS) in senior high, here’s a rundown of what the most determined GAS students have to say about it. 

Today’s K-12 generation is offered three educational tracks when they reach senior high school. The Academic track comprises HUMMS that deals with Humanities and Social Sciences, ABM for Accounting, Business and Management; and GAS for General Academics. For students who enroll in GAS, most are looking to develop their skills in reading, writing, and speaking skills. In short, GAS students are being groomed as professionals who serve people through ideas and communication. These students may someday be lawyers, professors, psychologists, or theologians. 

We’ve asked a few senior students who are proud GAS enrollees and here are some of the things they have to say about the advantages of taking this particular strand.

GAS has class.

And by class, we don’t mean your actual class lectures but instead the great selection of subjects a student can take within the strand such as disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and organization management among others. Imagine learning how to deal with common and not-so-common problems that most adults face and being able to formulate solutions of your own. Now that’s something worth studying for. Most students find these topics interesting in how they are both necessary for any job and how they serve as concrete foundations to specific specializations when they enter college. This strand also offers flexibility for students who are still on the fence about what course to take in college as it gives them experiential education and previews of the other strands offered in senior high school.  

You can select a good mix of subjects.

GAS also offers a host of subjects from the other Senior High School strands namely HUMMS, ABM, and STEM. Students may choose to take these subjects simultaneously. Among better subjects to look into that are available in GAS are Philippine Politics and Governance, Community Engagement, Creative Writing, and Applied Economics among many others. These subjects give senior high school students general overviews on what they can learn about in college depending on their chosen courses. The most likely ones to take if you’re a GAS graduate are those that have to do with communication arts, education, journalism, philosophy, literature, and political science. However, GAS students may also choose other tertiary disciplines that are more inclined to the other strands because that’s just how versatile the general academics strand develops its students.

GAS students are like boy and girl scouts.

GAS students are always prepared for college like scouts on a camping trip. That is if the student already knows what course he’ll be taking up upon graduating senior high. This is because GAS makes it more convenient for students to pick the subjects and strands they need to take in order to pursue higher education. Like any other senior high school strand, students will always encounter challenges but the trade-off is how they can discover their true disciplines and what college course they can excel the best. Your typical GAS class is usually composed of diverse individuals who are ready to share new discoveries with each other. If you love letters, you may eventually develop an interest in numbers from the next math genius sitting right beside you in class. That’s actually one of the best advantages a student can get when choosing GAS over the other Senior High School strands. It gives a student the leverage to find his own strengths, as well as fresh perspectives on the new things he learns from its wide range of subjects. This opportunity will definitely prepare a student for college well and soon after graduation, the real world.

You thought the toughest choice you’ve had to make is picking one gelato flavor, until you were confronted with the question of which SHS strand to follow? We did some talking with those who have firmly decided on taking up General Academic Strand and here’s what they had to say:

1. It comprises of cool subjects

Yes, you read that right. With cool subjects such as Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction and Organization Management, you can be sure to stand out and study something unique.

2. You get to choose two subjects from the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Strand.

If you would love to study subjects like Malikhaing Pagsulat, Philippine Politics and Governance or Community Engagement, Solidarity, and Citizenship, then this one’s for you.

3. Crazy combos

You can choose not one but two subjects from any other academic strand, and mix and match as you please. It’s like the times you get two scoops of ice cream when you can’t make up your mind one.

4. Unli options

Not specializing in a strand would open the doors to a world of amazing options. You could even choose to specialize once you’ve got the hang of things.

5. Students who take the GAS will not be unprepared.

Contrary to popular belief, taking the GAS will not make a student incompetent for higher education; however, it would mean that you will find it hard to get into a college course with specific requirements, one that requires subjects like accounting or science as a foundation. So there you go. One last thing they would add is if you can’t decide which strands you might be taking, at least rule out the ones you definitely won’t be; that would help you choose your subjects. Are you not sure yet about your interests? Take the General Academic Strand (GAS). Unlike other K to 12 tracks and strands that are specific to a career, GAS gives you the chance to weigh your options.

GAS is a Senior High School strand that takes on a generalist approach in preparing students for college. It covers various disciplines like Humanities, Social Sciences, Organization, and Management.

Since GAS does not specialize in any strand, you are free to choose any college degree program under the three other strands based on the elective you will choose. Moreover, a possible course to pursue from this strand is Education.

While other strands are career-specific, GAS is great for students who are still undecided on which track to take. You can choose electives from different strands. GAS subjects are a mix of specialized subjects from the other three strands: HUMSS , ABM , STEM .

Since General Academic Strand (GAS) does not specialize in any strand, you are free to choose any college degree program under the three other strands based on the elective you have chosen. But there’s a possibility that you won’t qualify for a particular major, therefore they will require you to take specialized General Education courses as a prerequisite for the program you choose.

5 Skills You Learn From GAS Subjects

Agile and interdisciplinary are words that best describe students from the General Academic Strand (GAS). Since it is the most flexible out of all the other strands, students are trained to be ready for any college course and future career.

Maraming pagpipilian na kurso at trabaho ang mga GAS students. That’s why they are equipped with skills that can be used across many fields. That said, here are five skills that can prepare you for anything after senior high school (SHS).

1. Interdisciplinary Thinking

This is a skill that enables you to think about and look at things from different perspectives. GAS students are able to make connections between ideas, even if they come from subjects that “don’t have anything to do with each other.” From culture and math, theater arts and psychology. Students are able to find connections between many things. This is a useful skill for any career since you can spot connections other people can’t see. It’s even a necessary skill given our technology-driven world. Many industries need people who can make sense of different kinds of information, regardless of the job.

Tips to improve your interdisciplinary thinking:

  • Get to know people from the other academic strands.
  • Learn new things outside of class. Explore different learning resources like podcasts, books, and education apps!

2. Project Coordination

Project coordination is knowing the final output, what needs to be done to make that output, and making sure that everyone and everything is on track. Since GAS students know how to do different kinds of projects, they also know how to organize and delegate tasks for these projects. They can organize deliverables, kagaya ng meetings, deadlines, presentations, drafts, at iba pa. This is a basic skill for any job since it helps with the way you manage your work (such as meeting deadlines and producing quality work), and the way you work with others too.

Tips to improve your project coordination:

  • Keep a planner or use organization apps to keep track of your schoolwork and schedule.
  • Make it a habit to write things down, especially if it’s related to school! Ika nga, the brain is good for thinking, not remembering.

3. Adaptability

GAS students work on projects and learn concepts from the other academic strands. From business proposals to creative outputs. You are not limited to just one specialization. Since you can easily switch between subjects and ideas, kayang-kaya mong gawin ang iba’t ibang klase ng gawain. You are able to adapt not only to different tasks, but with the people you work with too. Whether in school or in your future career, adaptability makes it easier for you to pick up new things and learn new skills quickly.

Tips to improve your adaptability:

  • Explore different roles when doing group projects!
  • Do one new thing every day, especially things outside your normal routine.

4. Creative Problem Solving

Creative problem solving is being able to come up with solutions that are unusual or unheard of. For instance, using music and composition to uplift Filipino education, or using marketing and design to create accessible reading materials. GAS students know that the possibilities are endless when it comes to solving problems. Kaya nilang mag-isip ng mga panibagong paraan at solusyon para sa mga bago at lumang problema.

Tips to improve creative problem solving:

  • Put down your phone and take a walk! The best ideas come when you’re “not thinking.”
  • Set aside time every day to do something you enjoy. This fuels your creativity!

5. Social Skills

GAS is a melting pot of people with different interests. Students are used to interacting with different kinds of people too. Malawak ang isip at pinag-aaralan ng mga GAS students. That’s why they develop certain social skills that help them work with different people across different fields. This includes conflict resolution, active listening, cooperation, and relationship-building. These are skills that aren’t taught in school, but very useful in any industry you want to work in. Social skills will benefit your professional relationships in the future. For instance, how you can have good working relationships with your colleagues and with your boss.

Tips to improve your social skills:

  • Listen and think before you speak.
  • Sign up for extracurriculars like sports, community service, and campus orgs!

Philippines Closes Schools as Heat Soars to ‘Danger’ Level

Scorching temperatures coincided with a nationwide strike of jeepneys, the main mode of public transport in the country.

The Philippines closed all public schools on Monday and Tuesday because of dangerously high temperatures, moving classes online in a country where schools are typically shut because of tropical storms.

Over the past week, average temperatures in many parts of the country topped 40 degrees Celsius, or more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Extreme heat is forecast this week to blanket almost the entire country, with the heat index in some regions rising to at least 42 degrees Celsius, or “danger” level, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration. That designation is the second highest on the agency’s heat index scale. It advised people to avoid exposure to the sun or risk heat stroke, heat exhaustion and cramps.

In metropolitan Manila, where the heat index is forecast to hit 45 degrees Celsius early this week, residents in overcrowded slums have been cooling off by setting up colorful inflatable pools on busy roads. Others in this megacity have been dipping into Manila Bay, flouting rules that prohibit swimming in its polluted waters.

In its advisory on school closures, the Department of Education on Sunday said the extreme weather coincided with a nationwide strike of jeepneys, the colorful, open-air vehicles that are the main mode of public transportation in the Philippines. Jeepney drivers are protesting a government plan to phase out their rides — which trace their origins to U.S. military jeeps — and replace them with modern, more energy-efficient minibuses.

The extreme heat had already forced some schools to cancel classes before the government’s call for closures. The Jesus Good Shepherd School in Imus, a city south of Manila, last week sent students back home because of soaring temperatures, even though the private institution is among the small minority of schools in the country that has an air conditioner in every classroom.

“It is hard for the students and teachers alike to concentrate, because the air-con is struggling, too,” said Ana Marie Macarimbang, a fifth-grade teacher at the school who has taught for nearly two decades. “We are in a tropical country, yes, but the heat now is more intense than I can remember.”

Weather-related school closures in the Philippines have historically been more common during the typhoon season, which peaks between July and October . The current closures, teacher’s groups have contended, could have been avoided had the authorities not changed the school calendar after the pandemic. The school year now runs from August to May, roughly, rather than the former June-to-March schedule.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has said that he has no objections to readjusting the school calendar, and blamed climate change for the extreme heat. The government “really didn’t expect it to be like this,” Mr. Marcos said earlier this month.

Extreme temperatures are also disrupting everyday life in other parts of Asia, including Cambodia and Vietnam . Earlier this month, a heat wave forced schools in Bangladesh and India to close.
