Video Transcript

Baris Ata (00:00): When I came here, it felt like, "Now I'm in the major leagues." I realized how high the standards are.

Jane L. Risen (00:09): We're the oldest PhD program within a business school, which is pretty extraordinary to think of sort of how long ago the recognition was there that we wanted to be training not just business leaders in practice, but to be training the future leaders of academic discipline.

Ray Ball (00:26): So I arrived in 1966. Oh, it was marvelous. The place just crackled with ideas and open discussion, and I ended up throwing out all the ideas I came with.

Ann L. McGill (00:35): What I especially liked about learning things here is this is an interdisciplinary school, so you didn't have to dive in a silo. You can wrap your arms around huge areas.

Marianne Bertrand (00:46): What is special is that we are part of a business school, training PhD students across a range of disciplines, not just economics or finance, which we deploy in the Economics Department, but also students are doing psychology, operation research.

Ray Ball (00:59): At Chicago, the ideas were the authorities, not the people, and they were all up for grabs.

Amir Sufi (01:06): What we're trying to create here is people who produce knowledge, not just consume it. And that's the real challenge I think of PhD education.

Ana-Maria Tenekedjieva (01:15): I was never told at any point that, "Oh, this is not real finance. This question is too outside of the box." On the contrary, it was always, "You should do what you want to do, and we're going to think about placement once the paper is ready."

Jane L. Risen (01:32): You don't make any assumptions. You question everything.

Pradeep K. Chintagunta (01:35): It's not enough just to know what other people have done. It's also important to know what needs to be done next. To be able to do that, you need to be able to ask questions beyond the questions that have been asked in the previous literature or in the previous knowledge that's already out there.

Jeffrey R. Russell (01:53): When you're going to seminars here, or watching my colleagues talk in the hallways, you'll often see them in what look like very contentious battles. But really, they're just after, "What's the right answer?" When PhD students come here, they are able to sort of bring that into their own souls, and I think that really pushes them then to sort of be the best possible researcher that they can.

Ana-Maria Tenekedjieva (02:12): Chicago Booth is known for its quite aggressive questioning style. I think that we get a little bit of a bad rap. There is a point to the aggressive questioning, and it is to clarify the idea. In Chicago Booth the spirit is be tough on the idea, not on the person.

Amir Sufi (02:30): Throughout the world, we're appreciating more and more how influential research can be. I think our PhD students going forward will increasingly be placed in positions, both in scholarship and in government and in business, where they can have major influence.

Ray Ball (02:48): So the fact that this is the oldest doctoral program in business, that it has been going for 100 years, gives some indication of the commitment of this school to training people. We still have those same values, and so it's always going to generate people who change the world, who change the way we think. I can't tell you at this point how that will happen. That's exactly the idea. New people come in with new ideas, and they learn how to implement them in the school, and they change the way we think about the world. And that's going to keep going.

New grads may have a harder time landing their dream job, despite a strong labor market — here's why

By jessica dickler,cnbc • published may 9, 2024 • updated on may 9, 2024 at 12:08 pm.

  • Although the overall outlook is positive, some employers are cutting back on new college graduate hires, and salaries are likely to fall short of expectations.
  • But even as the job market cools for soon-to-be grads, job seekers are more discriminating in their searches.
  • Many young adults only want jobs with at least some remote flexibility, according to one report.

Newly minted college graduates should feel pretty good about their job prospects .

The U.S. economy just notched another month of job gains , and although the unemployment rate edged up to 3.9%, "the streak below 4% has continued for 27 consecutive months," said Mark Hamrick, Bankrate's senior economic analyst.

"The fact remains that the job market has remained more robust and resilient than had been expected," he added.

Still, those entering the workforce may be in for a few shocks.

"Oftentimes, college graduates come out with this expectation they will get an executive job making $100,000 a year, and that's not realistic," according to Ivan Misner, founder of business networking organization BNI.com.

Starting salaries align with last year's, but there will still likely be a disconnect between what new grads are hoping for and what they'll get, Misner said. Recent college graduates earn a little more than $62,000 a year , on average, according to ZipRecruiter.

Some employers are scaling back on their hiring plans altogether. Overall, hiring projections for the class of 2024 fell 5.8% from last year, according to a report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers , or NACE.

The report found that the decline follows a historic hiring boom in the aftermath of the pandemic, suggesting that this year's drop is a return to "normal" hiring plans.

Work-life balance expectations

The class of 2024 now believes employers have the upper hand in the job market, at least compared with last year, as more candidates compete for fewer positions, according to Monster's 2024 State of the Graduate report .

And yet, there are a few things that young adults entering the job market aren't willing to compromise on, especially on work-life balance.

Graduates are prioritizing flexible hours and mental health support, Monster found. Most want a hybrid schedule, with 60% saying they would not even apply to a company that requires a five-day-a-week return-to-office mandate.

"This year's graduating seniors were in high school during the pandemic — they've only known having multiple options," said Monster's career expert Vicki Salemi. "To them, this is not even the new normal. This is normal."

But going forward, those just starting might have few remote options. Full-time workers between the ages of 20 and 24 are less likely to be fully remote compared with other age groups, due in part to seniority level, according to another new grad hiring report by payroll provider Gusto.

Where new grads get the best bang for their buck

Companies with remote work opportunities will allow job seekers to cast a wider net, Salemi said.

"In terms of the quality and quantity, they can pursue jobs beyond the constraints of a particular zip code," Salemi said.

And when it comes to location, opportunities and pay can vary greatly.

After years of high inflation , new grads must also contend with elevated food, transportation and  housing costs , depending on where they go.

Buildings in Manhattan, New York

New York City has the highest rate of new grad hiring but also comes out on top as the least affordable city for those just entering the workforce, according to Gusto's report.

New York's average starting salary of $64,134 could feel like just $28,479 when adjusted for the Big Apple's high cost of living, Gusto's report said.

Alternatively, salaries in Austin, Texas, stretched the furthest in a comparison of the country's major cities. There, the cost of living is 1% lower than the national average, and the average new grad earns $57,418, on average.

Last-ditch bid to save UK graduate visa as critics circle

Even a favourable mac report may not relieve political pressure on government to act further on international student numbers, risking ‘enormous damage right across the sector’.

A sign before a flooded road says 'Road closed'

UK universities are staging a last-ditch battle to resist further changes in the rules governing international students, and stave off more financial damage to the sector, ahead of the release of a keenly anticipated report into the graduate visa route.

With the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) set to conclude its investigation into “abuses” in the post-study rights of overseas students by 14 May, critics have been pushing the government to take ever more drastic measures to bring down the number of international students, arguing for an overall cap and for some institutions to be prevented from sponsoring visas at all.

The sector has been warned to “brace for the worst” as a fraught political climate on immigration – exacerbated by poor local election results for the Conservative Party – has put pressure on Downing Street to take further action on the two-year graduate route, after removing the right for master’s students to bring dependants , which was blamed for a 44 per cent drop in January enrolments.

Options understood to be on the table include scrapping the visa entirely, reducing its duration to six months or a year, or placing extra conditions on its use, such as a salary threshold.

In an 11th-hour attempt to protect the visa, sector leaders have attempted to highlight the potential economic damage cuts would do to the whole country, not just universities.

Michael Spence, the president of UCL, said the government’s own analysis has shown the visa is “set to bring in £12.9 billion of additional tax revenue compared to £6.8 billion of extra fiscal costs between 2021-22 and 2030-31”.

“If we want to grow the economy and encourage global leadership and innovation, we need to continue to attract the brightest and the best,” Dr Spence told Times Higher Education , adding that it would be an “act of extraordinary national self-harm to curb the graduate route”.

Lord Johnson of Marylebone, the former universities minister, said any further changes “would set back so many important government policy priorities”, including ambitions to become a science superpower and to “level up” neglected regions.

“It’s hard to think of a policy more self-defeating. And all for what? To lower immigration statistics which international students shouldn’t be part of anyway,” he added.

In March, home secretary James Cleverly tasked the MAC, chaired by Brian Bell, professor of economics at King’s College London , with conducting a “rapid review” into the visa “to ensure the graduate route is not being abused” and check whether it was being used for immigration rather than education.

One of the policy’s biggest critics, Conservative MP Neil O’Brien, co-authored a report for the Centre for Policy Studies, published on 8 May, that calls for the visa to be scrapped along with the introduction of an overall cap on sponsored study routes and “substantial revisions” to the UK government’s target of attracting 600,000 international students a year .

Universities where there is “evidence of sustained abuse”, such as high dropout rates or low attendance, should be prevented from sponsoring visas at all, the report says.

Co-author Karl Williams, CPS’ research director, said Parliament needed to “take control” of the number of study visas issued, rather than “effectively leaving it up to the universities”.

Such interventions have increased the unease in the sector that even a favourable MAC report will not decrease political pressure on the government to act on international students before the next election.

Anne Marie Graham, chief executive of the UK Council for International Student Affairs, said she was “confident” the body “will publish a considered, evidence-based report” and urged ministers “to consider the evidence of the impact of the graduate route on our economy and our global reputation in its response”.

But the short time frame given for the review “indicates there are a bunch of people who have made up their minds”, said Vivienne Stern, chief executive of Universities UK. “As much as I would like them to take account of the evidence that the MAC presents, I have a grim feeling that that is not where we are,” she said.

Ms Stern said the options for post-study work had been hotly debated within government for months and it was still unclear where ministers would land.

“It may be there is some attempt to limit the collateral damage done by wholesale removal of the graduate route,” Ms Stern said. “But I don’t see any of the options being floated not doing enormous damage right across the sector.”

She said that there had been a “dramatic cooling” in the international student market following the dependant changes, with more decreases in enrolment being predicted for September following the drop in January.

“I would like government to recognise they have already achieved what they need to achieve and if they go further, they are going to have a different problem of catapulting some universities into real financial difficulty very quickly, in places that can very ill afford to lose their university,” Ms Stern said.
