to most of us. It is hard to even imagine that such a world of misery and despair does exist very close to us; more than being hard to imagine, it is hard to believe. Do such things really happen in the world around us? Looking straight into the lives of people who have to beg for a living, Naan Kadavul takes what one might call a brutal view of the existence that they are forced to lead. What forces them to lead such a miserable life? One, it is their circumstances and their helplessness; second, it is a mafia of sorts being run by a heinous group of people indulging in human trade. We are made to feel the pain and distress in their lives. There are scenes that can make you squirm in your seats, literally. Now, where does an Aghori sanyasi from the holy terrains of Kasi fit into such a plot? It is a lot like the return of the prodigal son to his fold after years of alienation. But here the son who has returned is not repentant but is foul mouthed, conceited and unapproachable. But, in spite of all the repulsiveness that he exudes, there is also an air of mysticism about him. Largely unconcerned about what happens around him, he smokes weed, chants mantras in a different language, does death defying yoga poses, blows the conch and does many more things that increase the mystery about him. But as if by Almighty’s design, he destroys the evil men. You might feel that the pace is slack in the first half, but don’t lose heart, things pick up considerably in the second.
That is the story in a nutshell, but there is more to the movie than just the storyline. In fact, the story seems to be of secondary importance to the depiction of unsavory and disturbing realities. Bala has created a world of misery where cruel men make the rules. But, it looks like he was not sure as to where to draw the line. The dungeon like setting, the mutilated people (you see people with all kinds of deformities), the sharp and crude words used and the animal like treatment meted out to them take a toll on the viewer very early in the movie. It looks like the director wanted to leave a lump in your throat but ends up giving you an uneasy stomach. The movie can be analyzed at length if necessary, but it is suffice to say that Bala’s signature shines through at all places. His attention for detail, the painstaking picturisation, the raw and original stunts are all there. And, even in the midst of such depressing nothingness he manages to infuse some very natural and likeable humor, treading a very thin line. It helps to liven up the atmosphere a bit. But the end feeling is that he got too obsessed with depicting the cruelties inflicted on the beggars by their ‘owners’ which does not help the final product.
Performances! In a Bala film, you expect the actors to be at their best. Surprisingly, for all the hype, Arya does not have that much of screen time though he does make an impact whenever he appears. He doesn’t have much to work with though. He has always got the same stoic expression, uttering the same intonations and striking the same poses. But getting to maintain that demeanor is not easy and he has worked hard to do it which can be seen. Pooja as a blind beggar touches us when she first appears, but the feeling soon wears off. Nevertheless, she has maintained a consistent feeling of pathos putting in considerable effort into her performance. The disabled and mutilated people, who should have been picked straight out of real life, live their lives on screen. But the real surprise packet of the film is the comedian Krishnamoorthy, who has been previously known only for his capers with Vadivelu. He turns out a really well etched performance. All credit to Bala for spotting the serious actor in him.
Technically speaking the movie is high on production values. Be it the townscape of Kasi or the rustic temple environs or the dark dungeons, the images have been captured well. Ilayaraja’s music surprisingly doesn’t make one sit up and take notice, mostly because it is gelled neatly into the narrative. Dialogues by Jayamohan are few but very crisp and one feels that he had an influence in the way actors and an actress of the current generation are mercilessly bashed about in a scene. And, if you think that the movie is set mostly in Kasi then you are wrong, it is hardly around for 10 minutes.

Naan Kadavul Tamil Movie
Naan Kadavul is a 2009 Indian movie directed by Bala starring Arya, Pooja, Devaraj and Rajendran. The feature film is produced by Sivasree Sreenivasan and the music composed by Ilayaraja.

Director Bala, who has carved a place for himself in Kollywood with his powerful films 'Sethu', 'Nanda' and 'Pithamagan', is now on to his next film, 'Naan Kadavul', which is all set for release.
'Naan Kadavul', a movie which has been in the making for a long period of time, is one of the most ambitious projects, not just of Bala, but of the lead actor Arya too. Both Bala and Arya have reportedly taken much pain to see this movie made.
Set in the holy town of Benares, 'Naan Kadavul' tells the story of a person named Rudran. He had to leave his native village in Tamil Nadu after his father drove him away from home. The story reportedly is presented as a repentant father's sojourn in Benares in quest of his son.
Rudran, who had wandered about, finally settles down among the sanyasis belonging to the Aghori sect. They lead an isolated and tough life and are even said to be practicing cannibalistic rituals. The film also has as a key character Amsavally, a blind girl, who comes into the life of Rudran and brings about a change.
While Arya plays Rudran, it's Pooja Umashankar, who had acted in films like 'Panthayakozhi', 'Jay Jay' etc, who plays the role of Amsavally. 'Naan Kadavul' is complete at last, and will hit the screens shortly.

Fantastic Review: Naan Kadavul
It’s either when the muscle-bound main character slaps his mother for touching him or when the deformed beggar slave children show up that Naan Kadavul puts its card on the table. I still have no idea what those cards are, but I know that they are there, and that’s the point. Unless it’s not.
If I’m being honest, I feel inadequately armed to review this movie – knowing little about Tamil region filmmaking, the culture of the area, and whether or not this thing is supposed to be funny, serious, odd or a musical.
The film focuses on Rudran (Arya) who has become an Aghori – a member of a revered sect – and repeatedly claims to be a God while smoking an unnatural amount of marijuana. He returns to his village and takes up residency in a cave near a temple where most come to speak with a religious leader with no arms or legs. At the same time, a blind woman (Pooja Umashankar) is kidnapped by a brutal despot and forced to work as a beggar alongside a troupe of the disfigured and the mentally handicapped.
The true difficulties of the film come from three distinct places. The first involves the length, and a first act that could be chopped off completely without losing much. The second is the oddity of the main character. He’s forceful, rude, random, and enigmatic. He also is terrible at fighting, but manages to take physical control of the area since apparently firearms do not exist in the area. Rudran, in short, is an asshole. He’s a religiously transcendent asshole, but he’s still an asshole.
The third problem is the failed seriousness of a handful of the moments. It’s impossible to reject the Fantastic Fest/Alamo Drafthouse environment that the film played in, and it sadly feels like so many of the schlocky movies that play on a weekly basis at midnight. The film rests somewhere in the middle space between intense drama and curiosity beyond standard, mockable weirdness. There are things to like about it, but there are also the unnerving, melodramatic looks from Rudran, some ridiculous lines, and the interspersed musical outbursts filled with overbearingly long montage shots.
On the other hand, the film tells a story about a group of disenfranchised untouchables that’s engaging even if it’s not subtle. The blind singer Hamsavalli’s situation is truly heartbreaking, and it’s told and acted with grace. It gets slapped in the face by the abruptness of the pot smoking God-man, but when those worlds aren’t combating, the cruelty of the gang leader and the warm community of beggars works well against the powerlessness of the kidnapped singer with a transformative voice.
The world that’s on display there makes it seem like India is plagued with beggars dressed up as Vishnu asking for spare change at the temple. However, featuring the untouchables isn’t exploitative in any real way. The group that thinks Freaks is exploitation may see this the same way, but the slaves in Naan Kadavul are realistic portrayals of the begging industry in a more severe way than the children in Slumdog were.
The movie is a mixed bag for sure, and it steps on its own toes, but there’s something worthwhile shining through all the ganja smoke and feather-teased hair. At the very least, it’s the best musical set in Tamil featuring a God with Farah Fawcett’s hair and a blind woman who is sold to a man with no face that I’ve ever seen.
Naan Kadavul Illai Movie Review: Mediocrity thrives in this reckless revenge drama
Rating: ( 1 / 5).
Director: SA Chandrasekhar
Cast: Samuthirakani, Saravanan, Sakshi Agarwal, Ineya, Dyana Sri
A kind-hearted man valuing law over everything gets forsaken by the very system. He finally turns vigilant and seeks revenge. In his four-decade-long career, almost every film of SAC has this common line at its core. Naan Kadavul Illai is no different, except this one is inferior on all grounds.
While SAC's films from his golden era, like Sattam Oru Iruttuarai and Naan Sigappu Manidhan , encourage the audience to stand up for what's right and question the flaws in the judiciary, his latest NKI has a loser who almost succumbs to evilness as the protagonist and the much-needed vigilante transformation happens here only after all damage is done.
However, these are the least of the problems in the film. Though SAC tries hard to be relevant and updated with NKI , the film ends up being dated and regressive. Senthooran's mother, portrayed as the epitome of courage, credits it to her caste lineage. "Naan Maayandi ____ pondati da!" she often roars with pride, and the camera zooms to Vela Ramamurty's photo on the wall. Should I even name the caste in mention?
Leena is the token representation of an independent woman in the film. But how do we know that she is one? SAC drops all the 'pointers' to make things easy for the audience. He makes this CBI officer wear a sports bra and work out in the gym or take down a dozen rowdies for most of the runtime. Despite her house's walls adorning long quotes about the dissociation between nudity and honour. The film eventually does exactly the opposite, and we have an extremely disturbing scene of a teenager made to parade nude and believe that it is the end of her life. Well, I can keep going on and on.
NKI keeps trying to teach us a lot of things. But the major learning I got through the film is the newly revised and relaxed censor board rules concerning profanity. This U/A film is filled with loads of cuss words, and most of them shockingly escape the beep. I was unable to wrap my head around SAC's fascination for swearing in NKI as his characters keep throwing a never-expected string of cuss words, which either leave us cringing or giggling. I lost it when Veerappan breaks into his dirty version of Senthoora from Bogan . Sadly, the only honest and dedicated performance of young Dyana Sri gets bull-dozed amidst this ruckus. NKI opens with a dream sequence of Ineya, which is quite an anti-climax. It is the kind of scene that potentially ends this story within minutes. How I wish dreams came true!

For astrological reasons, a father (Azhagan Thamizhmani) has to leave his son Rudran (Arya) in Kashi for 14 years.
14 years later, repenting his act, he goes with his daughter in search of the boy. He finds him there but is shocked to learn he has become an Aghori, a fierce, tigerish sadhu who gives moksha and prevents the soul from getting reborn. Nevertheless, he brings him back to Tamil Nadu as he had promised the boy's mother (Vijaya Bharathi).
The story takes a turn here and introduces us to the world of physically and mentally challenged beggars, a world controlled by the cruel Thandavan (Rajendran). Hamsavalli (Pooja Umashankar) is a blind girl who was with a group of street actors, but on one day was forcefully separated from her troupe and made to join the beggars controlled by Thandavan. Soon, she becomes a victim of Thandavan's cruelty.
Meanwhile, Rudran leaves his house to find his place in a small cave near a hill temple. One day, Rudran's mother comes to plead with him to come back to their house but is unsuccessful. Following this, Hamsavalli tries to convince Rudran to return to his house, but fails. In the meantime, Thandavan makes a deal with another man of the same profession to sell some of his beggars to him for a tidy profit. The man forcefully takes the beggars away, although they want to stay with the rest of the beggars. He then returns with a man with a deformed face trying to force Hamsavalli to marry him for 10 lakhs worth of money. Thandavan orders his men to bring Hamsavalli, but they take her to Rudran to help her. Rudran kills the new man and is arrested by the local police, who are forced to let him go as they are not able to locate the body and are afraid of forcing a confession from Rudran for fear of being curse. This agitates Thandavan.
Hamsavalli seeks protection and solace from the church, but Thandavan finds her and tortures her as she refused to marry the deformed man, thus making him lose out on a good amount of money. An angered and humiliated Thandavan beats up Hamsavalli badly. Rudran is shown wounded in his forehead, with blood oozing out. In a flashback, Thandavan appears face-to-face against Rudran and fights him, the result of the fight being the wound. Rudran kills Thandavan. Hamsavalli finds her way to Rudran and beseeches him to free her from her misery and the earthly life. She also pleads with him to grant her moksha so that she never has to be born again. Brutal depiction of a world unknown..
A complex concept and it requires a craftsman of Bala’s accomplishment and persistence to execute it. Technically speaking the movie is high on production values. The images have been captured well. Ilayaraja’s music surprisingly doesn’t make one sit up and take notice, mostly because it is gelled n... (more)

Reality hits you hard.
It’s hard-hitting, disturbing … and real! Even those who boast of being bold enough to enjoy sordid crime thrillers and supernatural spine chillers on screen could find the starkness of ‘Naan Kadavul', a little too much to stomach. Bala proves once again that he’s a director who thinks differently. (more)

Unforgettable experience.
Arya has done a superb job. Pooja's great talent was also beautifully executed. Naan Kadavul is full of Bala’s signature style of movie-making. The flow of the movie is as weird as the concept and story, edited ably by Suresh Urs. The colors of the visuals, thanks to cinematographer Arthur Wilson, ... (more)

An honest cop arrests a criminal and sends him to jail. After years, the criminal comes out and kills the people who jailed him. After killing the judge, who changed his fate, the criminal decides to kill the cop. He abducts the cop's daughter. Meanwhile, an elderly person interested in society fulfills the people's wishes without revealing his identity. What's the connection between all these three? Was the cop able to save his daughter from the criminal? The rest of the film deals with these.
Star Performance
Samuthirakani played the cop and did what was required for his role. Saravanan is a good actor, but he didn't fit the role well. Sakshi was given a substantial role, yet her performance was not impressive, except for the action sequences.
The story is familiar, and the screenplay could be more interesting. SAC tried his best to bring a cop thriller with some social message. Unfortunately, he couldn't make it. The film is a mixture of some of his hit films. He is unable to pull the audience though he tried some latest cinematic elements in his old story. Sakshi was given action scenes, and she did justice to the given job. Some of the characters needed to have been penned better. To impress "Vijay" fans, SAC used Vijay's dialogues and posters in the film. Siddharth Vipin's BGM is good. The visuals are okay. But, the making could've been better with some twists and a good-paced screenplay.
What's There?
- Samuthirakani's presence
What's Not There?
- The script is not new
- The screenplay and execution are not much impressive
- The scenes are much more predictable
SAC is an experienced director who has given many hit films. But this film didn't help him bring back his successful self. If you love his way of storytelling, you can try it!
