Essay on If I were a Unicorn (968 Words)

January 24, 2020 by Study Mentor 4 Comments

Unicorns are one of the most talked legends who have gained popularity by starring in every child’s dreams.

The legend of Unicorn is passed down from generation to generation. Unicorns made up a major part of my dreams.

I always wanted to own a unicorn which was a personification of beauty, with its long and slender legs running majestically all over the field; eating grass and playing.

My childhood dream was to ride a Unicorn, as if they even existed. But as a child fancies fulfilling his dreams, so did I. One morning, when I got up, I was astonished to see white hair everywhere. I freaked out.

There was a horn on my head and a mane on my neck. I quickly scurried towards the mirror to see my appearance.

Oh god! I had become my own childhood fantasy: A Unicorn. The Unicorn in my stories was often described as an epitome of love, sanctity, and élan.

The beauty of the Unicorn is unparalleled. I could not believe that I had turned into one myself.

Unicorn

According to the legends, Unicorn’s white color symbolizes purity, peace and virginity as well. Unicorns are known to possess magical and mystical powers.

But I wanted to see for myself if they even worked. So I just thought of cleaning my room.

And, in a spur of a second, my room was spick and span. Now I wanted to go out to live my dream. But how was I to face my family. They would probably freak out. And no, I wouldn’t use my powers against them.

It was unethical. So I waited for my parents to leave. Then quickly I scribbled a not saying “I will be back later. Just went out to play. Take care. Love” And with this, I ventured into the streets.

Turns out, my decision was wrong. Such an exotic animal roaming around the streets of Delhi had people in spins. Some were trying to capture photographs.

But what caught my eye was when someone tried to ride me forcefully. I just shook myself violently and the person fell off. I wanted to giggle at that moment.

But I realized, it was not safe for me to roam in this form. So I went back to my place and took human form with the help of powers.

Though I missed looking like a beauty straight from heaven, I sucked it up and just went with the flow.

Maybe human form helps me to access those powers which I could not in the form of Unicorn. After that, I just ate something to fill my tummy.

Then I again ventured out in the streets. I made a mission to help everyone but I made sure that nobody took undue advantage of my help to sit back relaxed and stop any productive activity. As I walked along, I saw an injured puppy.

My heart immediately melted. I healed it through my powers and also gave it some dog food to eat. It felt satisfying that I helped a creature.

But I was not happy with the insensitivity prevalent among the people. It gave such a cold look to their faces. I wanted all evils to end. So I was like a madwoman on fire to achieve her goals.

I wanted change in not only my country, India but the whole globe as well. I started by trying to remove all the poverty prevalent in the world. No, I did not load people in cash or goodies. Instead, I loaded emotions in their mindsets.

When one family of the rich strata of society decides to help one poor, progress is not a far vision then.

I wanted an end to all the wars taking place on the land of mankind. So I decided to put a full stop to this nuisance.

First of all, I began with eradicating terrorism. I changed their mindsets.

As soon as I did that, they gave up their nefarious activities and surrendered all kinds of weapons to the government.

The government was initially reluctant to let them off Scott free but I knew they were harmless. So I persuaded the government to let them off.

Next, I went off in the Mediterranean region to look at the situation of war struck countries. I teleported myself and saw the vast amount of destruction war had made. I was disheartened to see the scathing impact that the war had on all lives.

I tried to stop the war. But I soon realized that though terrorists had already been taken down, it was the monster that raged people’s mind which needed a check. Children were roaming with guns when it was just an age of playing with toy guns.

I ended the war there by travelling back in time when everything was beautiful and comfortable. The place was restored into its glorious beauty in no time.

And I made sure that the predicaments which led to war did not arise again. I wanted to remove all sins from the world and make this world a loving place to live in. but this was not possible practically because it was the hearts of the people that needed taming.

And no amount of magic can ever do that. Nevertheless, I tried to eradicate all the problems being faced by the men and the environment as well.

I tried to destroy all the dangers threatening Earth of peaceful living. I didn’t want to paralyze the mankind into thinking that they could just sit back doing nothing. But I just wanted t o help people.

Wonder of the Day #1578

Are Unicorns Real?

Wonderopolis

SOCIAL STUDIES — History

Have You Ever Wondered...

  • Are unicorns real?
  • How long has the unicorn myth been around?
  • What magical powers did unicorns supposedly possess?
  • Imagination ,
  • Physician ,
  • Marco Polo ,
  • Genghis Khan ,
  • Pliny The Elder ,
  • Immortality ,
  • Indian Rhinoceros ,
  • Arabian Oryx ,

Today’s Wonder of the Day was inspired by Sarah from IN. Sarah Wonders , “ Are unicorns real? ” Thanks for WONDERing with us, Sarah!

Picture it: You’re skipping through fields of flowers on a clear day. You’re on your way to your grandmother’s house. You stop to listen to the sounds of nature all around you. The birds are singing and the bees are buzzing. In the distance, you hear an odd sound. As you move toward it, you see something white and shiny. What could it be? You reach a clearing, and you see a beautiful, horse-like creature. There’s a single horn jutting from its forehead.

You gasp. When the animal hears you, it turns to flee . It leaps into the air and away into the forest. As it leaves, its mane and tail shimmer and throw rainbow-colored glitter into the air. What is this magical creature you’ve just seen? It’s a unicorn, of course!

Does this sound like the set up of a fairy tale? It is! Unicorns don’t really exist in our world today. However, thanks to many myths and legends, they are alive in the imaginations of children all over the world.

So how exactly did such myths and legends get started? Were they based on a unicorn-like creature that lived thousands of years ago? Or are they simply stories passed down by generations ?

Historians say the first written account of a unicorn comes from the fourth century B.C.E. It was written by Greek physician Ctesias, who had traveled through what is now Iran. There, he heard many tales of single-horned wild donkeys that were as large as horses. He wrote that creatures were quick and powerful. They had white bodies, red heads, blue eyes, and a long multi-colored horn.

It’s doubtful that the author ever saw one of these creatures. Instead, historians believe his writings tell the stories that were told to him. He’s not the only one to have written about unicorns, though. Others did claim to have seen the creature. Famous sightings include those by Marco Polo, Genghis Khan, and Pliny the Elder.

Descriptions of unicorns changed with every story. Most legends said that unicorns had magical powers. Some said they gave people immortality . Others claimed they had healing powers or made people able to fly.

Today, many experts say stories about unicorns could have been influenced by real animals. They point to the Indian rhinoceros, which is a powerful beast with one horn. Other possibilities include the wild ox, Arabian Oryx, and narwhal. The unicorn could be a mix of many animals.

A recent finding may offer another explanation. Scientists found an Italian deer with a single horn on its forehead. They believe this deer has a rare genetic mutation . This causes some to WONDER. Maybe unicorn myths came from an animal with a similar mutation thousands of years ago!

Wonder What's Next?

Tomorrow’s Wonder of the Day features some weird and wacky weather!

Find a few friends or family members who love unicorns to help you check out the following fun activities:

  • If unicorns were real, would you want one for a pet? Why or why not? Make a pros and cons list of at least five things that you would and would not like about having a unicorn for a pet. Would it make a difference if the unicorn was the size of a deer instead of a horse? How about if its horn was only one foot long? Have fun imagining what it would be like to own a real-life unicorn!
  • While you've got your imagination hat on, fire up your brain cells to help you create a story about an encounter with a magical unicorn. Where did you meet it? What magical powers did it possess? How did it change your life? Where is it now? Have fun writing a magical short story that you can share with your friends and family members!
  • Up for a challenge? Break out your crafting skills and create a unicorn marionette ! You'll find most of the supplies around your home and a few items can be purchased at your local craft store or favorite department store. Have fun!

UNICORN ARE REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEVER DOUT THEM NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, ronan and katy! It is thought that a unicorn's horn was about 18 inches in length due to the written description by Greek physician Ctesias in fourth century, B.C.  However, it's doubtful that Ctesias ever saw a unicorn.

Wonderopolis

That's WONDERful to hear, Mia!

Wonderopolis

Unicorns are real

Hi, Unicorns are real! Though we do state that unicorns don't exist in our world today, check out the last paragraph of this Wonder:

"A recent discovery in an Italian wildlife preserve has scientists also considering a new possibility. Scientists recently discovered an Italian deer with a single  horn  protruding from its forehead. They believe this unique deer is the result of a rare  genetic   mutation . Given this new finding, though, some scientists have now started to wonder whether unicorn myths could be the result of a similar rare  genetic   mutation  in a horse-like creature thousands of years ago!"

The pictures of unicorns do look majestic! Thanks for WONDERing with us!

Re-read the last paragraph, Ely!! There is still hope!

Ely in the last paragrph it says that there is hope that they are real! You can still have hope. And HOSSBOSS2 that was kindoff rude. You should be nicer. What if someone said that one off your things weren't real? You would be upset as well. I am just saying you should be more respectful to the people around you. That could count as cyberbulliying. Would you really say that to her if you were facing her in real life? I think not.

Hi, Kaelin! As we explore and Wonder, we may realize that we all have different thoughts, opinions, and answers to topics.  It's always a good idea to think about what we're about to post before we post it.  To learn more, check out  Wonder 670: Do You Have Good Netiquette?

Hi, Sarah! We appreciate your comment and that you shared your opinion. Thanks for stopping by Wonderopolis! :)

Wonderopolis

First of all, I am very sorry to say this, but pixies and fairies don't have any actual documented proof. The only proof that could have been real was the Cottingley Fairies hoax. Later the pictures were discovered as fake. Fairies only exist in mythology. If you have any proof of the pixie that visits you, you should submit it to some place that will consider the possibility that it is real.

What is a Unicorn?

A unicorn is a legendary creature that is known to possess magical abilities. Though in modern day this creature is thought to be nothing more than a myth, ancient cultures wrote of it as a real animal. In fact, it was included in many natural history books of the time.

Unicorn

The most popular depictions of the unicorn are known by Greek and European accounts and mythology, though there are similar unicorn-like creatures that have been recorded throughout the world. There were many interpretations of the beast – some saw it as the incarnation of purity and grace. Some believed that the horn of the beast had the power to provide cures for sickness and the ability to serve as an antidote for poison.

Because of its supposed magical abilities, the unicorn and its horn was greatly sought after by anyone with means in the early ages. It was common for those of great wealth or nobility to attempt to procure a horn to protect themselves against attacks or to extend their lifespan in general. In fact, many ‘horns’ were sold by traders who came from the north and south. While these were not unicorn horns (they were either rhinoceros horns or narwhal horns), they sold for many times their weight and gold and proved to be a very profitable industry.

Asian Unicorn

In Chinese mythology, there are many accounts of a creature that is known as the qilin . This creature is often thought to be the Chinese equivalent of a unicorn, though it also has the properties of a chimera .

Qilin - The Chinese Unicorn

The qilin is known to have the body of a deer, a lion head, green scales, and one long horn that was its defining characteristic. There is also a Japanese beast of similar makeup that is called the kirin, but it is known that this creature is based off of the qilin.

The qilin are peaceful creatures and are known to be very magical and powerful. The qilin are thought to be able to walk upon grass without disturbing a single blade. However, since these creatures did not want to harm the ground, they were often thought to walk on clouds or water instead. They were also thought to be good judges of character. Many ancient stories show these creatures as being able to know if a person was good or evil just by looking at them. They are peaceful in nature and only punish the wicked.

Also similar to unicorn mythology, qilin are often seen as a symbol of fertility. Although they were not hunted for their horns, they were often shown in art work as bringing infants to families.

African Unicorn

In Kongo oral traditions, there is a creature called the Ababda that is very similar to a unicorn. This creature is known to be about the size of a donkey and is said to have the tail of a boar. While it is known to have two horns instead of one like a unicorn, the horn of the Ababda is known to serve as a cure for many illnesses. Perhaps most importantly, however, the Ababda horn is known to be an antidote to many poisons.

South American Unicorn

The legend of the unicorn can be found in South America as well – specifically the country of Chile. This creature is called the camahueto and is known to possess many of the qualities of the unicorn.

Camahueto - The South African Unicorn

The camahueto is a creature that is very similar to a calf or bull. However, instead of having two horns, it only has one. The camahueto is known to be hunted by the machis (medicine woman) because their horn is known to possess the cures to illnesses. The machis are known to stalk the camahueto until she is able to capture it with a lasso and tear out its horn. After she has caught it, she bandages the opening and lets the beast continue on its way.

One of the most common uses for the camahueto horn is to scrape off shavings from the horn and mix them with sea water and apple cider. This combination was thought to cure impotency and restore vitality in older men.

It was also believed that the machis would plant small pieces of the horn back into the ground to allow other camahuetos to grow.

Greek / European Unicorn

The unicorn captured the minds and hearts of many in the European culture, especially because of the unique properties it supposedly possessed and the connection that was later made to Christianity. The unicorn was often portrayed as a magical white horse or goat-like creature with a long horn that rose from the center of its head. It was often thought to be a woodland creature that was difficult to capture and full of grace and majesty.

The unicorn was also thought to have cloven hooves and was known to possess powers that were invaluable for the time period. Among other things, the unicorn was thought to hold the cure to many sicknesses, the ability to purify water, and the antidote to poisons in its horn. Because it was so innocent and full of purity, it was commonly believed that only a virgin would be able to capture the creature.

It was also commonly sought after by nobility and royalty. There were many who were known to pay an impressive sum of money for the opportunity to possess the fabled horn. Though no real unicorn horns have been found to date, unicorns were thought to be a living creature that was easily found in early cultures. There was no speculation as to whether the creatures might be fictional – they were often included in natural history textbooks.

History of the Unicorn

The first mention of the unicorn comes from the Greek writer Ctesias. They are mentioned in his work entitled ‘Indika’ (meaning ‘On India’). He describes the unicorns as being a breed of wild ass that was incredibly fast and light on its feet. Its defining feature, of course, was a horn that was about 28 inches in length that grew from the center of its head. Unlike the later tales of unicorns, however, these horns could be white, red, or black instead of the white color that is characteristic of the modern day understanding of unicorns.

Ctesias supposedly got his information from his time in Persia. Aristotle also gives a similar description of two such beasts that come from the same region – the oryx and the ‘Indian ass’. It is thought that there were many others who drew their descriptions of unicorns from this area as well. In fact, carvings of unicorns have been found on a sculpture at the ancient capital of Perspolis.

There is also an account on the power of unicorns that was found by Cosmas Indicopleustes – a merchant from Alexandria that shed many insights on early India. While visiting the King of Ethiopia he saw four brass statues that portrayed the unicorn and wrote an account of what he had learned. He claimed that all the strength of the creature could be found in the horn. He also noted the tremendous ability of the creature and it’s tendency to throw itself from a high cliff rather than to be captured. It was supposedly able to absorb all the impact with its horn and escape safely.

The Image of the Unicorn Evolves in the Middle Ages

During the Medieval Ages, the image of the unicorn grew into the fantastic image that we now recognize the creature by today. This is partially due to the adaptation of the story by the Christian Church. The claiming of the creature by the Church allowed many artists to portray it in a wide variety of artwork. Because there was a great emphasis on religion during this time period, this enabled artists to work with mythology without being prosecuted by the church.

The unicorn was also seen in a new light in mythology. The beast was still seen as largely unconquerable – but with a few exceptions.

The Portrayal of the Unicorn

The unicorn was known to be a mighty beast that was a creature of the woodlands and largely unconquerable by man. However, there was one important exception to this rule – the unicorn could not resist its urge to be drawn to a virgin maiden. When hunters would go out in search of a unicorn, it was often thought that the prideful creature would pause every now and then instead of simply escaping to taunt the hunters.

To take advantage of this weakness, lore states that a virgin maiden was sometimes told to wait underneath a tree and wait for the unicorn to gallop by. When the unicorn saw the maiden, it would inevitably be drawn in and lay its weary head in her lap. When it fell asleep, the hunters would gather round and trap the creature.

The Unicorn and Romance

There were also connections that were drawn between the tale of the unicorn and the romance between men and women in the courting process. Many 13th century French authors liked to make the analogy that just as a unicorn is attracted to the virgin so is a lover attracted to his woman. There were also similar comparisons that sought to speak of the unicorn as a symbol of chaste love and faithful marriage.

Marco Polo’s Description of the Unicorn

Although there are many different interpretations of the unicorns throughout the Medieval Ages, many of these descriptions echoed the magical awe of the beast. Marco Polo’s account, however, leaves much to be questioned.

He describes the creatures as being close in size to elephants and hair similar to that of a buffalo. They had a black horn in the middle of their heads that could only be described as being similar to a boar. He also noted that they enjoyed basking in mud and slime – a far cry from the pure nature that was characteristic of the beast at the time.

He was shocked to note that the beasts were noticeably different from the enchanting creatures that could be captured by virgins. His obvious description of a rhinoceros in his writings leads many to wonder if he was mistaken in his identification of the creature or if he was alluding that the beast was an over exaggeration of the rhinoceros.

The Unicorn Interpreted By the Christian Church

The unicorn was enthusiastically adopted by the Christian Church who appreciated the many allegories that could be used to symbolize the creature’s connection to Christ. The two most popular expressions of this idea were used to describe the incarnation of Christ and the Passion of the Christ.

The Virgin Mary and the Incarnation of Christ

One of the most popular ways in which the legend of the unicorn was used to relate to Christianity was with the Incarnation of Christ. This version compares the unicorn approaching the virgin as the process that was undergone to allow the Virgin Mary to become impregnated by Yahweh. It is thought that this reference could clearly be seen by the unicorn laying its head down on the virgin’s lap – in close proximity to the womb.

The Passion of the Christ

Another interpretation of Christianity’s connections to the unicorn come in the form of the passion of the Christ. The hunters represent the sinners who sought to overcome Christ. The unicorn (Christ) was able to outrun the hunters easily because he was the embodiment of all that is pure and good. However, because of his great desire to save those who are pure of heart (the virgin) the unicorn goes to the virgin maiden and lays his head in her lap, selflessly sacrificing himself.

This interpretation can possibly be seen in the seven panel tapestry piece entitled, ‘The Hunt of the Unicorn.’ This series depicts a unicorn that is pursued by many noblemen. They are unable to capture the creature until it goes to rest in the lap of a virgin. They appear to kill the creature, but the last panel shows a resurrected unicorn that lives happily in field of flowers.

The Value of the Unicorn in Early Cultures

The unicorn was highly sought after in many cultures – especially European cultures that hoped to gain some of the mythical powers of the beast. Many accounts from early times claim that the secret to the unicorn’s power is hidden in its horn. The horn itself is thought to be made of a substance called Alicorn that was thought to hold the ability to heal various ailments and diseases. In addition to this, it was also thought to cure impotency and give the owner the ability to purify water and protect against poisons.

Rainbow Alicorn

The horn was greatly desired by many royals and nobles. In fact, it was common practice for nobility to use alicorn to create ceremonial cups that were used by high ranking members of society. The protective abilities of the horn would prevent one from dying even if their cup had been spiked with poison.

The horns were also desired as decorative fixtures as well. The Throne Chair of Denmark was thought to have been made of unicorn horns for many years. In reality, these horns are likely narwhal horns that were sold by traders from the north. The Europeans were not aware of the narwhal and its unique horn – as a result, it was very easy for northern traders to scam the Europeans with fake horns that were sold for much more than their weight in gold.

Possible Explanations for the Myth

So what inspired the story of the unicorn? It’s likely that the mythical beast is no more than a misunderstanding of the natural wildlife of ancient worlds. It is extremely likely that the beast was created by European merchants and travelers who studied the drawings, statues, and paintings of the cultures they visited on their trading routes.

While it is possible that there was, indeed, a horse-like or goat-like creature called the unicorn it is doubtful the creature existed into modern day. It was likely wiped out by hunters who hoped to use its horn to make an impressive profit.

The Rhinoceros

One of the most logical answers to the question of the existence of unicorns comes from the rhinoceros. Many people point to the creature not only because of its characteristic single horn, but also because of the account of Marco Polo. In his writings, Marco Polo claims to have encountered a unicorn during his travels. However, the brutish account of the beast and the single black horn that protruded from its head was more characteristic of a rhinoceros than a magical unicorn.

This leads many to believe that the original unicorns were rhinoceros’ that were over exaggerated by travelers and merchants looking to make a profit from their stories.

The Aurochs

There are also those who believe that the aurochs of Europe could have been the inspiration for the tale. The aurochs are an extinct species of cattle that are known to have been very large. As an ancestor to domestic cattle, it is thought that creature could have inspired many stories because of its great power and strength.

When drawn from the side (as many creatures were in early cultures) it may have appeared that the aurochs was a single horned creature. As many years passed by, it would have been possible for the early cultures to think that the images referenced a strange and mythical creature. Additionally, the established sightings in history could have explained why this unknown creature was recorded in natural history instead of mythology.

The Narwhal

One of the biggest perpetrators of the myth was likely the northern hunters and traders that decided to pass off narwhal horns as unicorn horns. These hunters knew that the European population had never seen a narwhal and wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

In fact, there was often speculation as to what a unicorn horn could look like until the narwhal horn was introduced into trade. Previously, a unicorn horn could be long or short and many different colors. When narwhal horns were introduced into trade however, they set the standard for what was considered to be a proper horn. They passed all the tests that were in place to check for fake horns because they were made of real horn. Additionally, their long length and spiraled texture was quickly adopted as the norm for what a unicorn horn should look like and was adopted into what is now the modern day understanding of unicorns.

Genetic Engineering

Still many wonder, is it possible that a unicorn did exist? And if so, could it be brought into existence again?

Those who look to Oberon Zell-Ravenheart would say yes. Zell – a self-proclaimed wizard – has been pursuing magic and the secrets of the past for many years. It was this obsession, along with appreciation for the book, ‘The Last Unicorn’, that inspired Zell to experiment with genetically manipulating goats so that they displayed only one horn.

Many who look at his successes are quick to call out the experiment as the phony replication of a unicorn. Others argue, however, that results are results and the creature is perhaps the best answer we have to how the unicorns of early cultures came into existence. Regardless of what the popular opinion is, many of Zell’s followers are certain that he is, indeed, a wizard and has brought the unicorn back into existence.

Thank you! This information was easy to understand and very helpful!!

I met a unicorn in my dreams and it explained things to me in a way I understood. The information available on the internet about unicorns is weirdly consistent with the unicorn I met. People know the nature of unicorns and what they represent. I think there is plenty of reason for us to think that unicorns are real but that they are largely hidden from the eyes of the majority which are not pure of heart.

I read the whole entire article and I absolutely love and although I am still young and my family and friends think I I’m wierd for this and it gets me down sometimes but I really think that they were and are still real.

I read the whole thing! Wow! This was REALLy intresting! Thank you for such fine infomation. ⭐

I like unicorns and i think they are real

I'M A UNICORN

by Helen Yoon ; illustrated by Helen Yoon ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 13, 2022

A solid, though not groundbreaking, conversation starter on acceptance and openness.

A magical act of kindness resolves a small creature’s big identity crisis.

The narrator of this picture book appears to be a small bull calf with only one horn. After the protagonist reads from a book entitled Unicorns: Facts and Myths , that singular protuberance leads to the joyful titular declaration, “I’m a unicorn!” However, further reading and reflection on the matter soon provoke doubts. The narrator doesn’t “poop rainbows.” Nor do they “sparkle in the sunshine and twinkle in the moonlight,” and their mane does not “flow like silk and smell like peach candy.” After fretting over other self-perceived deficiencies, the narrator spies “REAL unicorns” in the distance and is terribly worried about what they will think of them. While the cartoon-style illustrations help to enhance the humor of the spare story, with the narrator displaying a range of expressions and contrasting sharply with the colorful elegance of the “REAL unicorns,” the resolution may strike some as too quick. It arrives when all concerns are laid to rest when the magical creatures nonchalantly accept the narrator as a unicorn—after all, the protagonist does have only one horn. The unicorns even offer a mysterious orb of a fruit to help with rainbow poops. Still, it’s a clever take on a well-trod topic that should spark conversations on identity. CARPENTER'S HELPER

by Sybil Rosen ; illustrated by Camille Garoche ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 16, 2021

Renata’s wren encounter proves magical, one most children could only wish to experience outside of this lovely story.

A home-renovation project is interrupted by a family of wrens, allowing a young girl an up-close glimpse of nature.

Renata and her father enjoy working on upgrading their bathroom, installing a clawfoot bathtub, and cutting a space for a new window. One warm night, after Papi leaves the window space open, two wrens begin making a nest in the bathroom. Rather than seeing it as an unfortunate delay of their project, Renata and Papi decide to let the avian carpenters continue their work. Renata witnesses the birth of four chicks as their rosy eggs split open “like coats that are suddenly too small.” Renata finds at a crucial moment that she can help the chicks learn to fly, even with the bittersweet knowledge that it will only hasten their exits from her life. Rosen uses lively language and well-chosen details to move the story of the baby birds forward. The text suggests the strong bond built by this Afro-Latinx father and daughter with their ongoing project without needing to point it out explicitly, a light touch in a picture book full of delicate, well-drawn moments and precise wording. Garoche’s drawings are impressively detailed, from the nest’s many small bits to the developing first feathers on the chicks and the wall smudges and exposed wiring of the renovation. ON THE FIRST DAY OF KINDERGARTEN

ON THE FIRST DAY OF KINDERGARTEN

by Tish Rabe ; illustrated by Laura Hughes ‧ RELEASE DATE: June 21, 2016

While this is a fairly bland treatment compared to Deborah Lee Rose and Carey Armstrong-Ellis’ The Twelve Days of...

Rabe follows a young girl through her first 12 days of kindergarten in this book based on the familiar Christmas carol.

The typical firsts of school are here: riding the bus, making friends, sliding on the playground slide, counting, sorting shapes, laughing at lunch, painting, singing, reading, running, jumping rope, and going on a field trip. While the days are given ordinal numbers, the song skips the cardinal numbers in the verses, and the rhythm is sometimes off: “On the second day of kindergarten / I thought it was so cool / making lots of friends / and riding the bus to my school!” The narrator is a white brunette who wears either a tunic or a dress each day, making her pretty easy to differentiate from her classmates, a nice mix in terms of race; two students even sport glasses. The children in the ink, paint, and collage digital spreads show a variety of emotions, but most are happy to be at school, and the surroundings will be familiar to those who have made an orientation visit to their own schools.

Everything you ever wanted to know about unicorns but were afraid to ask

Apparently some people think unicorns aren't real. LOL. Our Unicornipedia is here for the sensible people who know they are:

Facts about unicorns everything you wanted to know about unicorns

Cave drawings of unicorns have been found all over the world, from France to South Africa and South America. Unicorns get about.

The ancient Greeks believed they originally came from Indi, and everyone including Ctesias, Aristotle and Strabo wrote about them. They are described by the Roman Pliny the Elder in the Natural History as 'the fiercest animal, and it is said that it is impossible to capture one alive. It has the body of a horse, the head of a stag, the feet of an elephant, the tail of a boar, and a single black horn three feet long in the middle of its forehead. Its cry is a deep bellow.' No mention of rainbows, though…

Julius Caesar said he saw one in a forest in Germany during his conquest of Gaul, and Marco Polo said he saw one too, but that one turned out to be a rhinoceros. Disappointing.

Unicorns are notoriously hard to catch - which is probably why we see so few of them. In the 7th century the scholarly Spanish archbishop Isidore of Seville described why: 'The unicorn is too strong to be caught by hunters, except by a trick: if a virgin girl is placed in front of a unicorn and she bares her breast to it, all of its fierceness will cease and it will lay its head on her bosom, and thus quieted is easily caught.' Leonardo da Vinci agreed. He said virgins made them forget their ferocity. Virgins can do that.

Unicorns are afraid of Labradors and have been known to attack them, although they become docile around pheasants .

The 6th-century Greek merchant Cosmas Indicopleustes, who travelled to India, believed a unicorn's power was all in its horn: 'When it finds itself pursued and in danger of capture, it throws itself from a precipice and turns so aptly in falling that it receives all the shock upon the horn, and so escapes safe and sound.' So, better than cats then.

Genghis Khan said he decided not to invade India because he met a unicorn that knelt down in front of him and then looked at him with slightly scary human eyes. He felt this was a clear warning sign sent from his dead father to get out and told his army to retreat. If this ever happens to you, go home - wherever you happen to be.

'Powdered unicorn horn' was sold in pharmacies in London until 1741 as an elixir for aches, pains and ailments. Until someone worked out it was actually narwhal horn. No unicorns were harmed in the making of this elixir. Phew.

Elizabeth I was given a unicorn horn by the explorer Martin Frobisher, which he had found washed up on the shore in Northern Canada and later became part of the Crown Jewels and known as the Horn of Windsor. Some people now think it was a narwhal tusk again, but some people are stupid.

If you are a liar, it is said a unicorn will pierce you through the heart with its horn, which is blunter than it looks, so this would not be a particularly fun way to go.

One of Prince George's christening presents was allegedly a hairbrush made with the hair from a unicorn's mane. The Duchess of Cambridge uses it.

The Throne Chair of Denmark is made of unicorn horn. It's surprisingly comfortable.

The Dukes of Nofolk have always carried a bag made from unicorn hide when performing their duty as Earl Marshal at the state opening of Parliament. For the rest of the year it is displayed in a glass case in the Barons' Hall at Arundel Castle and can only be handled with special 'magic' gloves.

The last known sighting of a unicorn in the UK was during the supermoon of August 2014. It was briefly seen at the Moreton-in-Marsh Agricultural & Horse show, rearing up as the lambs were competing in the annual Lamb National before disappearing into the trees.

My Dream To Have A Unicorn Comes True

By fathimath zuhra.

i am a unicorn essay

Oh, how I yearned to have a unicorn! I adored unicorns more than anything else. They were my whole world! I even decorated all my things with unicorns because of this craving.

Oh, let me introduce myself to you. I am Fathima,11 years old. I am a person who really wanted to have a unicorn and my dream did come true. Let me tell you the story.

It was my ninth birthday party. Everyone, including my uncle, came to the party. It was the first time I had seen my uncle. That night after supper, I went to open my presents, which was my favourite part of my birthdays. But little did I know, I was in for an even bigger surprise.

Who knew imaginary animals were not just imaginary, they were true. I saw a big stream of shining pixie dust outside the lattices. There was a whole big rally of pixies accompanied by elves, and then came the big surprise, there was a UNICORN! You heard it right; a unicorn. I felt like I was in paradise; my dream was coming true. She came near me with a note saying that she was my new pet.

I reported the good news to my family. They were astonished and thought I was lying, but when I showed the unicorn to my family they believed. I named her Pheobe. I played with her, danced with her; she was all that I needed.

Suddenly there was a great big noise and I found myself falling into a big tunnel but then I woke up, finding my mom near me and me in the bed. I asked my mom, “Where is Pheobe? Where`s my unicorn?”

She was clueless. She asked, “What are you talking about?”

Then I found out it was all a dream. I was sad but the dream was all so memorable, which made me so happy.

Even now, I love unicorns.

You Don’t Want a Unicorn Writing

  • March 30, 2018

Have your students been swept up with the unicorn craze? Well, not only have my students, but also I have been! In my own classroom, it all started with this student checking out this book and wearing this bow. When my students were at reading partnerships, I noticed that her bow matched her book. Oh my. Too precious.

During lunch, I borrowed her book to read and absolutely fell in love with it. It lends itself so nicely to opinion writing, a unit that we are just wrapping up. The next day, I read aloud the book wearing my very sparkly unicorn horn, and my kids were officially hooked.

I used my anchor chart to pose the question, “Do YOU Want to Own a Unicorn?” Students developed their opinion and met with their table group to discuss the reasons why they felt the way that they did. I heard many students referring back to the reasons in the book for NOT wanting a unicorn, while other students used those same exact reasons for WANTING a unicorn! It was a great way to also introduce the idea of perspective.

After meeting with their group, forming their opinion with supporting reasons, students shared their opinion with the class. One at a time, each student walked up to the anchor chart and clearly stated their opinion, “I WOULD want to own a unicorn” or “I WOULD NOT want to own a unicorn.” They placed the “yes” or “no” star that represented their opinion on the anchor chart. (For the record, my opinion is a strong YES!)

The next step was to introduce this idea as the writing topic for the opinion writing paragraph. As a class, we reviewed the success criteria for opinion writing. One at a time, I read each sentence on the success criteria anchor chart. We used a mentor writing example to point out where in the writing the author included each part.

To support my developing writers who need extra guidance to be successful, I displayed sentence stems on the SmartBoard. Many of my ELL students really do well with this level of support for writing.

For two of my IEP students, they used a graphic organizer to break down the introduction, conclusion, and supporting reasons. I didn’t a picture of the graphic organizer, but you can see at peek at them in this photo below.

Students then wrote their first draft of their opinion writing. I have a handful of students who still use a spacer when they write. At this point of the year, they know they can just go and get one without asking. Well, I couldn’t resist making these adorable unicorn writing spacers for my kiddos.

Needless to say, everyone wanted a unicorn spacer. And I was fine with that. :)

My students use the writer’s checklist to check the criteria on our success criteria anchor chart, to see if they are “done” or need to go back to revise their writing. After writing, students worked with a friend to peer edit each other’s writing.

Now, onto the MAGICAL part. The art project part. :) This part of the writing project actually took place a couple days after we finished our first drafts. Let me tell you, in all honesty, my students were dying to do this project. They COULD NOT WAIT to get their hands on the unicorn templates, yarn, and of course, you know it, the GLITTER! :) They could not contain their excitement.

I had two responsible students be in charge of the glitter. That’s right. I teach second grade. Put two students in charge of the glitter and oh my they LOVED this job. I had two sweepers and two cleaners, also. :) The sweepers used the floor sweepers (thank you Dollar Store) to sweep of the glitter that fell and the cleaners cleaned up the table afterwords. I just love when we teach students how to be capable, responsible, and indepedent thinkers and learners. I may have heard comments about, “You are using glitter?!?!” from other teachers. Yes, I am using glitter. Actually, I am teaching my students how to use the glitter. And guess what? They ROCKED it! I hate when some educators have limited mindsets about what their kids are capable of doing. :( But that is a whole other blog post for another day.

Needless to say, our final drafts were MAGICALLY displayed.

Imagine yourself sitting in a field having a picnic, then, all of a sudden a big white horse comes up to you, but, then you notice the big horn coming out of its head and you know it is a Unicorn. Many people believe in suck a thing as a Unicorn, in my report I am going to tell you about these people, and the people that don’t believe too. I, personally don’t believe in such a thing as a Unicorn but, I don’t discredit those people that do.

The history of the horned animal known as the Unicorn is a very interesting one. In a fold take toled by the Urikanes they explain one theory of why there is no more Unicorns today. “Swipnet.se”,

“All of the beasts obeyed Noah when he admitted them into the Ark. All but the Unicorn. Confident of his strength he boasted ‘I shall swim!’ For fourghty days and fourghty nights the rains poured down and the oceans boiled as in a pot and all the heights were flooded. The birds of the air clung onto the Ark and when the Ark pitched they were all engulfed. But the unicorn kept on swimming. When, however the birds emerged again they perched on his horn he went under. And that’s why there are no more Unicorns now!”

Other that the Urikanes many people have searched for roof of the unicorns existence. Records that date back to the courts of Darious II, and even Aristotle wrote a little about the unicorn. The Chinese name for the unicorn was Ki-lin, to them, the Unicorn was a symbol of wisdom.

In the past Unicorns have appeared in many different writings, in the Ancient Greeks, the Chinese, and today. According to all of these legends the Unicorn has many different physical and personal traits. There were many different stories that gave the Unicorn a wide range of size, color, and type of hooves. But throughout all of these stories some things reigned true. In almost all of the stories the unicorn has always been pure white in color, with a long twisted horn in the middle of its forehead.

It has been said that the horn of the Unicorn could be used as an antidote for poisons. The Unicorn is almost universally known as a symbol of holiness and Chastity. Here is a quote from a Medieval German folk song, “Giblin”,

“The hunter stood beside me who blew that mighty horn; I say that he was hunting the gentle Unicorn- but the Unicorn is noble, he knows his gentle birth, he knows that god has chosen him above all beasts of earth”

Even though there are many people that believe in Unicorns there are also many people that don’t. One popular story about where the tales of the unicorn came from is the Narwhale. The Narwhale is an animal that lives in the sea and has a long twisted horn, much like what the Unicorn is described to have. It is said that the horns of the Narwhale may have washed up on the beach and the people mistook it for a unicorn horn. Another story of where the story of the unicorn comes from says just that, that the Unicorn was just a make up thing created in the minds of people like many other thing that people have created in there minds over time. My mom says this, “I don’t think Unicorns exist” (Anderson, L.), she is just one of the many non-believers out there.

Like I said earlier I do not believe in unicorns but I do believe that many people think Unicorns do exist, they think that they are just as real as a squirrel or a rabbit. I believe that a long time ago people saw the horn of the Narwhale and then made up the story of the Unicorn to tell people. I believe that the story was made up by people that knew that Unicorns did not exist but then the more people they told the more people that actually started believing in the tales of the Unicorn.

Although it would be very cool to have a unicorn interrupt your picnic with your family I don’t think it is very likely. If you do ever find yourself sitting there and seeing a Unicorn you might want to pinch yourself to make sure that you are not dreaming, because as of today there is no scientific evidence of the Unicorn ever existing, but, that dose not stop many, many people from believing in them.

Trump Embraces Lawlessness, but in the Name of a Higher Law

Signs featuring Donald Trump’s face and supporters’ slogans.

By Matthew Schmitz

Mr. Schmitz is a founder and an editor of Compact, an online magazine.

Donald Trump is often denounced in terms that suggest he poses an existential threat to the American political tradition. He is a fascist, a Russian agent, an aspiring caudillo: something foreign and menacing. To his critics, the four criminal indictments he faces are further evidence that he is a danger to democracy.

Mr. Trump and his associates may seem to welcome this characterization. He celebrates himself (inaccurately, as it happens) as a man who has been investigated “more than Billy the Kid, Jesse James and Al Capone combined.” He has praised James as “a great bank robber” and urged his fans to watch the 1932 film “Scarface,” based on Capone’s career. Donald Trump Jr. sells T-shirts that display his father’s mug shot with the words “Wanted — for president.”

For Mr. Trump’s detractors, such an open embrace of lawlessness confirms the danger he presents. But this understanding of his newfound criminal persona, a persona his legal opponents have helped to thrust upon him, overlooks something important: Mr. Trump may pose a threat to our political system as it now exists, but it is a threat animated by a democratic spirit. It is the threat of the outlaw hero, a figure of defiance with deep roots in American culture who exposes the injustices and hypocrisies of a corrupt system.

The outlaws in whose image Mr. Trump styles himself gained fame in the United States because they seemed to embody freedom and spontaneity, along with mistrust of authority and indifference to polite convention. They appealed to democratic impulses, however perversely. As the folklorist Stephen Knight has observed, the core values of the figure of the good outlaw are “liberty and equality.” These outlaws were lawless, yes, but in the name of a higher law. It is no coincidence that Mr. Trump recently described himself as the “public enemy of a rogue regime.”

The imagery is politically salient. Insofar as it resonates with his supporters, it may be an indication not that they are indifferent to our political tradition but rather that they are drawn to one of its core mythologies — and it suggests that attempts to use the legal system to defeat him politically will backfire.

From the beginning, Mr. Trump’s admirers have compared him to a paradigmatic outlaw hero, Robin Hood. In 2017, Sebastian Gorka, an official in the Trump administration, described Mr. Trump as “a Robin Hood taking over the empire” — an outsider who suddenly found himself on the inside, supported only by his “small band of merry men and women.” Representative Lauren Boebert, Republican of Colorado, has compared President Biden to Robin Hood’s antagonist Prince John.

Mr. Trump may not deserve the comparison — critics of his 2017 tax cut called it a reverse Robin Hood — but myth has a way of overstepping mere fact. Did Jesse James really pay off a widow’s mortgage, then rob the greedy banker who took the cash? Did Railroad Bill, the elusive Black bandit who stalked the rail lines of the South, actually feed the hungry with the money he made by robbing freight trains? For that matter, did Robin Hood really rob the rich and give to the poor? (The early ballads show him helping only members of his band.)

Whether these outlaws did the good deeds attributed to them hardly matters, because the appeal of the outlaw hero rests on a deeper truth: When the authorities are regarded as corrupt and malevolent, people will celebrate those who defy them. Like Joaquín Murrieta, the 19th-century Mexican laborer working in California who, according to legend, responded to injustice by vowing that he “would live henceforth for revenge,” Mr. Trump has promised to avenge the downtrodden. “I am your warrior. I am your justice,” he said in March 2023. “And for those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution.”

For those whose inclination is to trust and respect the American legal system, Mr. Trump’s mug shot, in which he defiantly glowers at the camera, may seem to lack humility. But for some others, the image may be a sign that he understands what it’s like to be on the wrong side of the law. The rapper Lil Pump has apparently had the image tattooed on his leg. The same is true of the rapper Bandman Kevo, who publicized his new body art with a recording likening himself to the candidate. (“Like Donald Trump, do what I want.”)

Lil Pump and Bandman Kevo have criminal records, a distinction they share with 70 million to 100 million other Americans — comparable to the roughly 100 million who have college degrees. It’s possible that a rap sheet is a political asset .

Mr. Trump’s embrace of an outlaw image marks a change on the American right. A political formation that once was committed to what Russell Kirk called the “defense of order” is now drawn to the most anarchic figures in our national mythology. The exchange of George Washington for Jesse James reflects the right’s growing alienation from America’s leading institutions. But the break may not be as total as it seems. Even as Robin Hood defies the local sheriff, he maintains his loyalty to the king. He may humiliate the bishop, but he prays to the Virgin Mary. A similar combination of rebellion and reverence characterizes Mr. Trump’s attempt to run as an outlaw who will restore law and order.

If Mr. Trump can manage to convince voters that he is an outlaw hero, then the usual criticisms of him won’t stick. His vices, however grave, will be seen as expressions of the democratic character, bound up with the political system his critics purport to defend. The threat he presents won’t be addressable by limiting foreign influence or vanquishing a single candidate. Indeed, given the nature of the outlaw hero’s appeal, we shouldn’t be surprised if efforts to counter him end up limiting things that are normally cherished as democratic values — not least, the freedom to challenge authority.
