However, his book "Aryabhatiya" claims that he resided at Kusumpura, which corresponds to the city of Patna in the contemporary day. Aryabhata is credited with writing several influential publications, many of which are considered mathematical canon. Essay on Aryabhatta

Aryabhatta is credited with discovering that the earth revolves on its axis; this was a significant finding at the time. In addition, he was a forerunner of the geocentric concept of the solar system, which asserted that the earth is the focal point of the whole cosmos. It is the centre of rotation for the sun, the moon, and the planets. Eclipses of both the sun and the moon were discussed in his work as well. His book mentioned that solar and lunar eclipses occur due to the earth and the moon casting shadows on each other.

Aryabhatta’s Education

Archaeologists continue to believe, even to this day, that Aryabhatta carried on with his education at Kusumpura. The fact that substantial works of his relating to astronomy were discovered at Kusumpura is the basis for the beliefs. As a result, it is plausible to assume that Aryabhatta resided in this region for most of his life. In addition, several historians think he served as the principal of Nalanda University, located in Kusumpura. Aryabhatta's texts are the only evidence that can be considered reliable; hence all of the other arguments and speculations are just based on assumptions and educated guesses. Some of the documents went missing, and they have just been located.

It is possible that Aryabhatta's estimations in astronomy were close to the mark in terms of precision. Aryabhatta's ideas are responsible for developing the fundamental building blocks of the paradigm used in computing. Because he developed such things that can't be envisaged in the current day without the conveniences of modern technology, we, as residents of India, need to feel proud of Aryabhatta. The place value system and ‘zero’ were his most significant mathematical accomplishments. His book "Aryabhatiya" contains all his astronomical ideas. His work also separates mathematics and astronomy. Aryabhatta made significant contributions to astronomy and mathematics. He postulated the heliocentric idea that planets orbit the Sun. He computed planet speeds relative to the Sun using this idea. He also estimated the sidereal rotation of the earth relative to the stars. He also established the sidereal year at 365 days, 6 hours, 12 minutes, and 30 seconds, barely 3 minutes and 20 seconds from the contemporary number.

Aryabhatta Legacy

Not only did Aryabhatta leave behind a legacy of knowledge in Indian culture but also in ancient civilisations near India. His astronomical findings were widely accepted and even translated into the languages of a number of the nations nearby. His idea that all of the planets revolve around a central point was validated by discoveries made in the contemporary world, which demonstrated that he was correct in his assertion that the sun occupies the position of centrality in the solar system. Aryabhatta also provided a concise explanation of the phenomenon of a lunar eclipse, including its causes and effects. The contemporary world holds him in extremely high esteem for all of the contributions that he made to the field of cosmology. His legacy of knowledge is highly regarded.

Interesting Facts About Aryabhatta

Aryabhatta gave the world its first definitions of concepts such as the equator, vertical, horizon, meridian, and parallax.

Aryabhata was the first astronomer to postulate that the earth's rotation was responsible for the apparent motion of the stars.

Scholars from all around the globe had faith in his ideas and translated them into other languages so that more people might understand them. The findings of contemporary science have shown without a reasonable doubt that Aryabhata's hypotheses and explanations were spot on.

Essay On aryabhatta

Essay on Aryabhatta: A man of scientific temperament and astronomical knowledge, Aryabhatta has left an indestructible mark on India and the world. His accounts on Mathematics guide various dimensions of the subject like Arithmetic, Vedic Mathematics, Trigonometry , and Geometry. In addition, his discoveries in Astronomy introduced the world to the ‘Heliocentric Theory’.

With his theory, the world came to know that the sun and not Earth is the centre of the universe. All these are vividly mentioned in his stellar works- Aryabhatia and Aryabhatasiddhanta. To introduce you to his achievements, we have written a 150 and 300-word essay on Aryabhatta in this blog. Keep reading!!

Essay on Aryabhatta in 150 Words

Here is an essay on Aryabhatta in 150 words:

Aryabhatta was born around the 4th century CE in Kusumpura, Bihar. He is one of India’s earliest mathematicians who flourished under the Gupta dynasty in ancient India. Under this empire, Aryabhatta composed two exceptional accounts-  Aryabhatiya and Aryabhatasiddhanta. His books are a testament to his critical thinking and immense mathematical knowledge.

He has been credited with the discovery of trigonometric functions, the value of Pi, and algebraic identities. Furthermore, he is most popularly known for inventing Zero and finding its place in the number system. In addition to Mathematics, Aryabhatta has made ample contributions to the field of Astronomy. He was the one who propagated the ‘Heliocentric Theory’. According to this theory, planets revolve around the sun and it is not the other way around. Also, he explained the science behind solar and lunar eclipses.

Therefore, it is ideal to say that Aryabhatta was an excellent scientist with immense knowledge and an exceptional understanding of his surroundings.

Essay on Aryabhatta in 300 Words

Now, let us look at an essay on Aryabhatta in 300 words:

Born in the 4th century, Aryabhatta is one of India’s most acknowledged mathematicians and astronomers. He was born in Kusumpura, Kulpa, Bihar in the 4th century. His contributions and discoveries have left an indelible mark on Indian astrological traditions.

He revolutionised the Vedic method of solving mathematical problems. Also, he studied and evolved key Mathematical fields like plane and spherical trigonometry, arithmetic, and algebra. Owing to his astounding knowledge of Algebra, he is regarded as the ‘Father of Algebra’. Also, he approximated the value of ‘pi’ as 3.14. In addition, Aryabhatta made use of null coefficients while being cautious about the risks associated with using zero. In contrast to Brahmi numbers, he followed the Sanskritic tradition, which primarily used letters and alphabets for notation.

Furthermore, Aryabhatta’s accurate insight was that the Earth rotates daily on its axis around the sun, causing the apparent movement of stars. This contradicted the prevalent belief of his time, which held that the sky itself rotated. Heliocentrism is defined as the celestial body’s axial rotation’, supported by mathematical evidence.

In later years, Aryabhatta’s research, inquiries, and computations were translated into numerous languages to assist astronomers from different cultures. The most notable translations occurred during the Islamic Golden Age, with influential Arabian mathematicians like Al-Khawarizmi and Al-Biruni, who also believed in the Earth’s axial rotation, drawing upon some of Aryabhatta’s discoveries.

In the realm of scientific knowledge and global impact, Aryabhatta played a pivotal role in putting India on the map. He challenged and contradicted many prevailing beliefs of his era, providing compelling evidence through his calculations to support his assertions. His work has stood the test of time, remaining remarkably precise. Aryabhatta was one of the few scientists who dedicated their entire lives to an extraordinary and enduring legacy of achievement. His contributions are celebrated and acknowledged throughout India.

Zero was introduced in the value system by Aryabhatta.

All Mathematical and Astronomical concepts by Aryabhatta are compiled in Aryabhatia and Aryabhatasiddhanta.

According to this theory, planets revolve around the sun and it is not the other way around.

The mathematical value of Pi is 3.14

Aryabhata

Mathematics is one of the foremost field that culminated in all the scientific developments. Be it a space mission or an invention, use of mathematics is inevitable in every walk of our lives. One such figure who mastered this field in the classical age was Aryabhata. He was one of the leading mathematician and astronomer of India.

Aryabhata’s year of birth is based on the timeline of publication of his work, which can vary. However, historians have estimated that he must have born around 476 CE in Patalipura or Kusumapura, now known as Patna. Other theories involve that he was from Kerala. Whichever may his birthplace be, it is presumed that at some point he must have moved to Kusumapura for higher studies. It is also speculated that he became the head of an educational institute there at some point, and in Patlipura he was at Nalanda University. Moreover, it is believed that he established an observatory at Bihar.

His magnum opus Aryabhatiya, was one of the primary source of mathematical and astronomical studies. This compendium of mathematics has survived numerous centuries and still found relevant to the mathematical field. It includes chapters on spherical trigonometry, algebra and arithmetic among other content. His other major work includes, Varahamihira , a compendium based on astronomical computations. This contemporary work is based on the Surya Siddhanta’s Arya-siddhanta which got lost over the centuries. However, the crucial work on midnight day reckoning has survived through Aryabhata’s Varahamihira. Furthermore, the book introduces and describes several astronomical instruments. Those tools include the gnomon, an umbrella-shaped device, a shadow instrument etc.

Besides those compendiums, his other work survived in Arabic translation, Al ntf or Al-nanf, while its Sanskrit translation remained lost. It is supposed that Aryabhata himself translated the work. In addition to that, his complete works are called Aryabhatiya by the critics. While, Bhaskara I named his work Ashmakatantra . Due to the fact that it has 13 introductory verses, 108 main verses and four chapters, it has also been referred to as Arya-shatas-aShTa.

The first chapter of the text is called Gitikapada, containing 13 verses, based on cosmology and discusses planetary revolution as well. The next chapter includes 33 verses and is called Ganitapada. This chapter highlights the arithmetic and geometric problems and mesuration. How the position of planets is determined on a given day and the unit of time is discussed by Aryabhata in the third chapter with 25 verses, titled Kalakriyapada. The final fourth chapter, Golapada, was consisted of the highest number of verses that was 50. It elucidates the astronomical elements and features of the ecliptic, celestial equator, astrological aspects like rising of zodiacal signs and phenomenon of day and night.

Aryabhatiya represents innovation in the presentation and discussion of such complex mathematical and astronomical aspects in the verses form. It left a profound imprint on the mathematicians in the years and centuries to come. Since the text of his compendium was quite brief, hence his admired disciple Bhaskara I commented on his work to further elaborate on the subject of his discussion.

His legacy was his detailed explanation of astronomical science. Aryabhata’s work is an exposition on planetary movement and solar and lunar changes that occur and the unit of time marked by sidereal periods. This legacy had a great impact on Indian astronomical tradition.

Aryabhatta’s Contribution to Astronomy

He explained the cause of the eclipses of the Sun and Moon. He gave the perfect value of the circumference of the Earth. Aryabhatta valued the length of the year as 365 days, 6 hours, 12 minutes and 30 seconds.

He was a great Mathematician but also an astronomer. Aryabhatta’s contribution to Mathematics was glorious and admirable. Still, his theories are the sources to do some estimations by astronomers. Without proper instruments, he measured the distance and the value of circumferences, influencing Modern scientists. In appreciation of his outstanding contributions to Mathematics and astronomy, the Indian Government honoured him by naming India’s first satellite after his name Aryabhatta.

Aryabhatta Education

Since childhood, Aryabhata has been brilliant in their studies and eager to learn new things. Especially mathematics attracted him, and he did many experiments before higher education. When his studies were completed with local gurus, he wanted to study higher education by going to University in Kusumapura. So joined Kusumapura university for advanced studies and lived there up to his teaching. There he studied the Buddhist and Hindu traditions and understood the inner meanings of Hindu scriptures written by sages. During their education, his tremendous talent in education made him kulapati to one of the institutions at Kusumapura.

Historians say he also became head of the Nalanda University in Pataliputra. The Pataliputra had an astronomical observatory, which was installed and observed into the Universe by Aryabatta. He contributed to setting up an observatory at the Sun temple in Taregana, Bihar.

Aryabhatta Contribution To Mathematics

essay on great mathematician aryabhatta

Aryabhatta was one of the first major mathematician and astronomer from the classical age of the Indian mathematics and also Indian astronomy. He is the main author of the several treatises on mathematics and the astronomy, some of which are even lost. His main works are on the Aryabhatiya and the Arya-siddhanta.

Aryabhatiya was particularly most popular in the South India, where many great mathematicians over the ensuing millennium had written commentaries. The great work was mainly written in the verse couplets and deals with the mathematics and astronomy.

Arya-siddhanta had circulated mainly in the northwestern part of India and, through the Iran, had a very profound influence on the development of the Islamic astronomy. It is one of the very earliest astronomical works in order to assign the start of each day to the end of midnight.

His several contribution to mathematics:

Place value system and the zero:

The place-value system, was first seen in the 3rd-century the Bakhshali Manuscript, was very clearly in place in his work. While he did not use even a symbol for the zero, the French mathematician Georges Ifrah always argues that the knowledge of zero was implicit in the Aryabhata's place-value system as a strong place holder for the various powers of ten with a null coefficients.

Value of the pi :

He had also worked on the approximation for the pi , and also may have come to the great conclusion that the pi is irrational. In the next second part of the Aryabhatiyam (gaṇitapāda 10), he writes that:

caturadhikam śatamaṣṭaguṇam dvāṣaṣṭistathā sahasrāṇām ayutadvayaviṣkambhasyāsanno vṛttapariṇāhaḥ. "Add a four to 100, multiply it by eight, and then add a number: 62,000. By applying this rule the total circumference of a circle with a diameter of the 20,000 can be easily approached.

This usually implies that the total ratio of the circumference of circle to the diameter is ((4 + 100) × 8 + 62000)/20000 = 62832/20000 = 3.1416, which is almost accurate to a five significant figures.

Trigonometry : He also gave the area of a triangle as: tribhujasya phalashariram samadalakoti bhujardhasamvargah that translates into for area of triangle, the result of the perpendicular with the half- side of the triangle is the area.

He had also discussed the famous concept of the sine in his work by the name of the ardha-jya, which basically means half-chord

Algebra : In the Aryabhatiya, he had provided various elegant results for the summation of the series of squares and the cubes.

Among these, Aryabhatiya is his greatest work. In it, he has described the concepts of square root, cube root, parallel series, and equations of different types. Aryabhatiya holds a wide range of information about Mathematics and Astronomy.

His calculated value of ‘Pie’ was more significant than Archimedes, who was a great mathematician of that era. Aryabhatta had first described that earth rotates on its axis. His field of study in astronomy has been mainly periodic movements of the solar system, eclipses, and constellations. India’s first artificial satellite was named ‘Aryabhata’ after him.

His theories and concepts in mathematics and astronomy are still a subject to learn and research for the greatest scientists of the present era. Many modern discoveries have already been mention by him in his compositions.
