As the definition of family states that a family, being those people who are biologically related to you, in real life, the term is much faster than that. Families can come in certain formats – from the traditional nuclear family to those in which children are raised by relatives to same-sex partners with their children. Many people turn to their friends for love and support and, therefore, consider them their real families. Family plays many important roles throughout life.  A person without a family is not complete in this world because family is an integral part of all of us.

A family can be a small family, a small nuclear, a big nuclear, or joint family. There are many relationships in the family such as grandparents, parents, wife, husband, brother, sister, cousin, nephew, niece, uncle, aunt, In-laws, etc. My parents love and care for my grandparents very much and always take care of their needs. They give lots of needed things to them whenever we go to the village. My parents talk to my grandparents with mobile almost every day by taking out some free time from their busy schedules. I am so lucky and feel very happy to have such lovely and careful members of my family. I miss my grandparents when I get back home. However, when you look at what a family means, you realize that family can be anyone, the people you were born to, or the people you choose to be with. Love them or hate them, you cannot deny the fact that your family is pivotal in your life and there are quite a few reasons for that.

My Family Essay 500 Words

Every family becomes the first school for the children where they receive all the cultures and traditions, and most importantly they receive the basic values of life. Family plays a great role in teaching good manners and habits to the newcomers in the family. It helps in nourishing a better character in society. I am feeling my good fortune to be born into a small nice family and to be a part of it, where I learned a lot of things in my early childhood. My family type is a big nuclear family having six members, mother, father, brother and his wife, and my sister. I live with my family and we are very happy.

Normally, a small family having one set of parents with two children is called a small nuclear family. A family having one set of parents with three or more children is called a big nuclear family. A family having many sets of parents with their children is called a joint family. My Family is the lovely family of the world for me and an important unit of society. A small or a big family becomes of great importance to its members and is considered as the strongest unit of society because various families together make a nice society. People in my family become very caring and give proper guidance from time to time.

My grandparents lived in the village in their homes and once a year during vacations go to meet them and enjoy by spending time with them. Both of them care for me and my brother, and sisters a lot. They generally tell us nice stories at night which we enjoy. We enjoy every moment with them and catch the moments on my mobile. A family provides lots of benefits to all members where everyone shares equal responsibilities within the family. Everyone in the family is emotionally attached to their happiness and sadness. They determine not just the interactions but the thinking that goes behind those interactions as they are emotionally attached to all so they can easily understand one’s feelings.  They help each other in their bad times which gives them a feeling of security. A family provides love, warmth, and security to its all members throughout life which makes it a complete family. A good and healthy family makes a good society and ultimately a good society is involved in making a good country. Hence, a family has a great influence on how we interact with each other and society at large. Our family imparts the knowledge of these norms to us and these norms are called values.

There are advantages and also disadvantages of having and living in a joint family according to the personal point of view depending on the modernization of living emotions and thoughts with our family members like a joint family providing a better pattern of living which is highly contributing to the proper growth. The members of the joint family understand the mutual understandings and adjustments between the people living in it. It teaches the principles of equitable economy and responsibilities and also guides how to stabilize the burden of other members. The members of the joint family become responsible and disciplined as well as they follow the commands and orders of the head of the family with respect.

Also, certain disadvantages are depending on the mentality of the person there may be a lack of proper rules in the joint family and due to this, the members live in a parasite and afterward they become a habit of feeding on other income. Due to this behavior, they start exploiting other innocent members of the family. In certain cases, the person having high status and money-earning members of the joint family generally insults low status or low money-earning members. There may be chances of separation in the joint families because of an imbalance of feelings of generosity, brotherly love, and feeling of oneness.

Families are a very essential part of our lives, whether you love them or hate them.  They play crucial roles in teaching us how to deal with the world. Without a family, an individual’s identity isn’t ever complete. Our family also gives me the feeling that we belong somewhere, they give us our roots. Knowing where we belong gives us the anchor as we need to deal with everything the world throws at us. Having a family is such a basic necessity that often we take it for granted when we have it. Our families stay with us from our first breath to our last. They provide us with the foundation upon which we build ourselves. To us, family is an extension of our life.

Family means people who are related to you, like your mom, dad, brothers, and sisters. Family is very important because they are the ones who love you no matter what. They take care of you when you’re sick, celebrate with you when you’re happy, and are there when you’re sad.

Paragraph On Family 200 words

Family is not just people who share the same blood; they’re also the people who you can count on. Your family is like your team. They cheer you on and help you when you’re having a tough time. Family members teach you important stuff, like how to be kind and how to share.

When you’re a kid, your family helps you learn about the world. As you grow up, you might not always agree with them, but they still have your back. Even if you argue or get mad at each other, at the end of the day, family is family. They’re the people who know you the best.

Paragraph On Family 300 words

Family is the cornerstone of anyone’s life. They’re the first people you meet when you’re born, and they help shape who you become. Families come in all sizes and types. Some people have big families with lots of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Some people have small families. Some people even consider close friends as part of their family.

In a family, everyone has a role to play. Parents usually take care of the kids, but as you grow up, you start taking care of your parents too. Siblings can be annoying sometimes, but they’re also your first friends. They’re the ones who know exactly how to make you laugh and when you need a shoulder to cry on.

Sometimes families go through hard times, like illness, fights, or even break-ups. But even in tough times, a strong family sticks together. The love and support from a family can help you get through just about anything. That’s why it’s important to spend time with your family and not take them for granted. Even a simple family dinner can mean a lot. So, no matter how busy life gets, make time for your family because they’re the ones who will always be there for you.

Essay About Family

Families play a crucial role in everyone's life. A child's first school, where they learn about various things, is their family. Family provides basic knowledge about one's culture and identity. Here are a few sample essays on the topic ‘family’.

  • 100 Words Essay On Family

For some people, family is simply their spouse and children. For others, family might be more inclusive, including parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, or even close friends. The definition of family is a personal one, and it's something that's constantly evolving. As you grow and change, so does your idea of what family means to you.

200 Words Essay On Family

500 words essay on family.

Essay About Family

When you grow up in a family-focused environment, you learn some valuable lessons. You learn the importance of being humble, take responsibility for your actions, share kind words and be a part of a team. You also learn to read people—by watching how other family members interact and discuss topics, you come to understand the different personalities and what makes each person who they are.

Families can be big or small— they serve as the cornerstones of our stability, supporting us so that we can grow into better persons. They're the ones you can rely on when times are tough. They make you feel loved and supported, no matter what. Family is also a source of comfort. They're the ones you can turn to when you need a friend, someone to listen to your problems or just someone to make you laugh.

Most importantly, family is a connection to our past. They're the people who have been with us through thick and thin, good times and bad. Nothing compares to the comfort of a mother's hug or the joy of a father's pat on the back. Although we argue the most with our siblings, they always rush to our aid when we find ourselves in difficulties.

Family is important because they are our foundation, our support system, and our connection to the past. They make us who we are, and we wouldn't be the same without them.

Here are some ideas to stay connected with your family members:

Take a walk together

Play a board game

Make a meal together

Watch a movie or TV show

Go for a drive

Family members provide support, advice and unconditional love to each other. They help each other out when times are hard, which teaches you resilience and provides a safe cocoon within which to grow. From this kind of familial bonding, respect and appreciation emerge — an understanding that every one of us comes from the same source, with unique strengths and weaknesses, but all tied together as one unit. Growing up in a family-focused lifestyle can bring many benefits – it’s just up to us to take advantage of them and make the most out of it.

Importance Of Staying Connected

No matter what your family looks like, or how you're related to one another, there are plenty of creative ways to stay connected. You could call each other every day, or even just once a week. You could make a regular date to get together, or just hang out when the mood strikes. The important thing is that you make an effort to connect regularly. This not only strengthens your familial bonds, but it also provides a sense of stability and continuity that can be helpful during difficult times.

Challenges For Families

It is also important to recognise that families can experience challenges. Difficult events, such as death, divorce, illness and financial strain can affect a family’s dynamic. Your family may need to pull together and work through these challenges in order to make it through them. This could mean more frequent communication and more supportive behaviour from each family member. There may also need to be changes made to the family’s daily routine in order to manage disappointments or make time for any additional tasks that come up suddenly.

Conflicts Within Family

It is natural for families to experience conflict, but it is important that this conflict is managed in a healthy manner. This means not engaging in name-calling or physical aggression, but rather communicating openly with everyone involved in the disagreement. If necessary, the family could even seek out external support or other guidance from an outside source. In any case, it is important for each member of the family to remember that they all have each other’s best interests at heart. Having one-on-one time with your family is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and feelings about your loved ones. Regardless of your feelings about them, your family is an important part of your life.

I come from a family of four— my parents, my brother, and me. My father is a hardworking man who has always been patient and understanding. Growing up, I could count on him to be there when I needed him, whether it was to help with school or just provide advice. My mother is incredibly supportive and encouraging. She loves to spend time with her family and has always been our biggest cheerleader. My brother and I are very close—we were both lucky to be raised by two loving parents. We constantly share our experiences with each other, helping us navigate life together as siblings. We have many similar interests, like playing games and going on hikes together whenever we get the chance. I am thankful for having such an amazing family in my life.

Speech About My Family

Speech About My Family (500+ Words)

Respected Principal, teachers, and dear friends,

Today I am going to speak about my family.

Family is where we learn our first life lessons, and they are the only assets that remain with us forever. I have a strong attachment to my highly educated and kind-hearted family, and their wonderful nature brings us closer. My love for my family surpasses anything else.

In our nuclear family of five, my father, a teacher, takes the lead and guides our family. He is the driving force behind our family’s success, predicting our needs and shouldering all responsibilities to shape our lives. He is my hero, making incredible sacrifices and ensuring our well-being.

What sets my father apart is that he never imposes his career choices on me. He values my independence and believes in allowing me to pursue my own path based on my interests, suitability, and capabilities. However, he desires a better future for me, and his support and guidance are invaluable.

My mother, a lovely woman, is both a dedicated homemaker and a talented beautician. She understands me like no one else, and we work together as partners in everyday tasks and challenges. Her elegant and insightful actions shape me into a noble individual. She encourages me to engage in activities that build character and promote personal growth, fostering a natural learning environment.

The love and respect I have for my mother goes beyond words, as she exemplifies unmatched motherhood and makes incredible sacrifices for me.

My grandmother, the cutest person in our family, brings a sense of discipline. Her presence ensures that everyone rises early in the morning. She delights us with her skill in making delicious sweet dishes, and we adore her for it. Her focused nature keeps everything in order and adds balance to our lives.

My elder brother, the tallest among us, is a passionate YouTuber and cooking enthusiast. He also loves playing cricket and is a gadget aficionado. Although he may not focus much on academics, his sweetness, and gentlemanly demeanor make him endearing.

Despite being in my final year of studies, my family continues to treat me with the affectionate nickname “chottu.” This endearing gesture reflects the immense love and care they have for me. I aspire to become a pillar of support for my family and repay the love and care they have shown me.

For me, my family is the epitome of love and support. Regardless of the circumstances, we are always there for each other, nurturing good values and morals. Respect for elders and love for younger ones are instilled in us from a young age.

My grandmother consistently teaches me important lessons in honesty, dependability, kindness, and more. I treasure my family as they are the precious jewels of my life. Their unwavering hard work to fulfill our desires strengthens my love and respect for my parents. We bond by playing games every night and engaging in meaningful discussions, cherishing quality time spent together. My family holds the highest place in my heart, surpassing anyone else.

With this, I conclude my speech. Thank you all for your patience and cooperation.

Speech on Importance of Family Values Free PDF Download

Family values are the virtues of an individual that is valued and passed on from generation to generation. In our country India, everybody has high regard for families and family values and when trouble knocks the family members defend and protect each other. However, with changing times the definition of family values has also changed with more youngsters wanting to live separate from their parents. This aspect of family values is prevalent in western culture, and it looks like our country is also adapting such things.

Most individuals don't think about family values until they need to teach their children a lesson in reaction to an unpleasant conduct. Family values, on the other hand, should not be disregarded. Thinking about your family values and imparting them to your children at a young age might educate your children how to behave when you are not around. What you do and say has an impact on your children. Encourage healthy family decisions and behavior by living a life that makes you proud of your family. Throughout life, important family values and ethical concepts will serve as guides.

For this speech on the importance of family values in an English article, we will explore different ways to present it and what can be conveyed. It can be a long speech on the importance of family values or a short speech on the importance of family values.

Long Speech on Importance of Family Values

This form of speech is useful for students in grades 8-12 who have to deliver a 5-minute long speech.

Good morning everyone, respected teachers, and my dear friends. I am Abc (mention your name) here to speak on the topic of the importance of family values. Living in India, we all know no matter wherever you are, whenever one interacts with you the first question one asks is about family. It is in our culture and tradition that it is believed that you carry your family name and values everywhere. Family truly gives us an identity in the society and the world we live in.

Whenever one achieves success in life and does a good deed, the first remark is he/she must be from a good family or he/she is so well brought up by their families. That is the reason the family values are very highly regarded and rightly so. Whether a child becomes a responsible adult or an irresponsible adult, depends on the values they grew up with.

Family values are the principles or standards of behavior that one considers useful and deserving of worth and that inform one's judgment of what is important in life. Earlier, in India, families lived together. Every member of the family, grandparents, parents, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The children will adapt and learn not what you say but what you do. The children see the way the elders of the family behave with each other and learn what is important based on their actions. If a family behaves respectfully, with love and care for each other, then these values will be deemed important for everyone in the family. When in terms of a crisis or problem, it is upon the family to proceed with patience, dignity, and grace. And arguments or disagreements within the family should also be handled in a mature manner without humiliating and behaving condescendingly to anyone.

It is what one sees in a family, they emulate even outside the daily dynamics in other relationships. There is a family outside of blood relations as well, the ones we choose. Our friends who become family also teach and add a great deal of value to our lives. The teachers who teach us and make us realize our purpose in life also become our family and their taught values are truly irreplaceable.

Now even when joint family systems are no longer seen and more nuclear families are being created, the importance of teaching and practicing good values will always remain intact. Even in a family of four, if love, joy, and togetherness are valued then that will be passed on along generations.

We must remember that even if the world is against us, it is our family that will support us and lead us to new heights of understanding of ourselves. If we falter, the values we learned from our family must be taught a way to admit, apologize, and actually show changed behavior.

Family is something that will be bound to us always and we must respect that whether we live far or near. And one is never alone in the world because of family. I thank my family, friends, and teachers for accepting me, teaching me so many things, and allowing me to learn from my mistakes.

Short Speech on Importance of Family Values

This form of a short speech is helpful for students in grades 4-7 who can deliver a 3-minute speech based on the points covered here.

Good morning everyone, respected Principal, Teachers, and my dear friends. I am so happy for this opportunity to deliver a speech on the importance of family values. I feel happy to talk about such a relatable topic.

We all are an amalgamation of all the relationships in our life we share from our birth, childhood, and adult life. Anything that resonates with us, we try to be that. The most influential impact we have is from our family. My friends often praise me for my helpful nature. I would like to credit my parents for teaching me the importance of being helpful with examples.

All the good in me is because of my family. We are a close-knit small family, earlier we lived with our grandparents, because of my parents’ job we moved to the city a couple of years ago. My parents have always valued family above anything else in their lives, they learned this from their parents.

They have taught me the importance of being honest, trustworthy, patient, and taking personal responsibility.

I have learned to be courageous and persistent because I have seen my parents never giving up if any problem arises. I have seen them work with integrity and uncompromising ethical values that I respect a lot. I hope I can be like that when I grow up. We must learn from our parents and try to be better people who can add value to the world we live in through our acts of kindness and bravery. Let’s live with love and humility in the world just like we do with our families.

10 Line Speech on Importance of Family Values

This format of speech is helpful for students in grades 1-3 to understand the meaning in simple words.

Family is the most important aspect of everyone’s life, especially a child.

And children learn from what they see and experience more than what they hear.

A child who is brought up with love, care, compassion, respect, and understanding will inculcate such values.

These values become inherent and grow when they carry on with other relationships be it with siblings, cousins, and friends.

Earlier people lived in joint families set up now it is changing to nuclear families.

In joint families, everyone is always there for each other to help and support in case one needs help.

In nuclear families, mostly all are working and busy so they work and make efforts to be there for each other.

It is not the number of family members that matters, it is the environment and the surroundings one lives in that hold a greater value.

The environment a family provides must be a safe place where fairness, caring, responsibility, humility, and kindness are practised and appreciated.

When a family has strong core values they live in peace and harmony for many generations with such values.

FAQs on Speech on Importance of Family Values

What are family values?

Family values, also known as familial values, are traditional or cultural values that connect to the structure, function, roles, beliefs, attitudes, and goals of a family. Traditional or conservative beliefs that are considered to enhance the healthy functioning of the family and the strengthening of society's fabric. The traditional family structure, gender norms, and child care are all values. While these roles within the family unit are fast shifting, it is critical to ensure that all of the family's needs are met, whether they are met by the man, the woman, or both of them together as partners. There are several key family values that you may want to instill in your children. The values listed below are by no means fully comprehensive.

Why are family values important?

Individual family members, the entire family as a unit, and the society in which we live are all affected by family values. Most Families will share a shared set of values, such as a love of freedom and a belief in democracy, as citizens . Family values assist us in determining what is good and wrong. Values encompass not just our morality but also our roles, beliefs, and attitudes. Family values serve to establish male and female roles as well as family interactions. Family values play an important role in teaching your children what is right and wrong. To put it another way, having strong values can assist your children in achieving their goals. Adult children are more likely to make decisions that you will approve of. Younger members of the family will be better able to resist peer pressure and make wise decisions.

What does family values reflect?

Our family values reflect who we are as people and how we parent. Our children acquire life lessons when we explain and embody those ideals. They learn to express themselves, solve difficulties, learn from their mistakes, and acquire other talents and abilities that contribute to a happy life. Parents are also educated. Some parents have been persuaded that grades are the most crucial indicator of their child's progress. While no one can deny that academic learning is essential for success in 21st-century jobs, parents can teach their children so much more via their family values.

How can family values be instilled?

To instill strong family values, you must first choose what values are essential to you and what you want to instill in your children. As a parenting team or with the entire nuclear family, write a family purpose statement. Then, wherever possible, utilise family activities and excellent parenting to reinforce those basic values. When your children accomplish something that supports the ideals you're teaching them, for example, praise them. Recognize that your actions play a significant role in educating others through example. Make holiday and weekend rituals, as well as family routines, that promote the values you consider important. Spend time with your family and hold a family meeting if you need to talk or refocus on something. Having family rules in place allows them to know what to do and how to respond in challenging situations.

Which values must be instilled in kids?

It is very important to teach the significance of respect. Kids should know how to give respect to elders. Secondly, honesty is another value which is to be taught. As it is said, ”Honesty is the best policy.” Make sure your kid doesn’t lie. Empathy and compassion towards all living creatures is what makes a place better to live in. So, instill compassion in toddlers. Start feeding stray animals as this is one way of teaching compassion. Gratitude is another important aspect of life. It is important for everybody to be satisfied/ gratified to be happy. Your kid should be happy with what he has. Positive outlook towards life is another crucial value.

His decision becomes final in all the family matters. He sits on the front chair on the dining table.

He takes our class in the early morning and evening to teach us Indian cultures and traditions. He is a very cool personality and friendly person of the family however everyone of us do not have dare to go against him. He is very effective person and wins everyone’s heart through nice talk. He is very old however helps us in doing our home works because he was teacher. He teaches us about the tools of success in the life such as discipline, punctuality, cleanliness, moral, hard work and continuity.

My grandmother is also a nice woman and tells us nice stories every night. My father is a principal of the school and like discipline very much. He is very punctual, sincere and hardworking in nature. He teaches us also that when you eat time, time will really eat you one day so never waste time and use it in positive ways. My mom is a sweet and very simple housewife. She cares every member of the family and makes a happy environment in the family every day. She gives special care to the grandparents and kids as well as always helps poor and needy people in the society. We have always been taught from our childhood to love and respect elders and help needy people on the way. My sweet small family is really full of love, care, peace, prosperity, and discipline.

Biden’s speech: Warnings about Trump without naming him, a hefty to-do list, and a power handoff

In a rare Oval Office address to the nation explaining why he stepped down from the 2024 presidential race, President Joe Biden said he believes the best way to unite the nation is to “pass the torch to a new generation.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden delivered a solemn Oval Office address Wednesday that laid out in the clearest terms yet why he abandoned his reelection campaign.

He wanted to send an unmistakable warning about Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump while anointing Vice President Kamala Harris as his natural successor, without invoking an overtly political tone that would have been out of step in the official setting of the White House. He was determined to show that he would not act like a lame-duck president, outlining an ambitious agenda that underscored his resolve to continue building on his legacy.

Follow AP’s live coverage of the 2024 presidential race.

Here are key takeaways from Biden’s address:

He warned about Trump — without naming him

Biden did not mention Trump, his former Republican opponent , in his 10-minute Oval Office address — but he didn’t have to. The remarks were imbued with a deep sense of urgency about what the outgoing president saw as the stakes of the election.

The early part of his address sketched the choices that faces voters in November — a contrast Biden himself had hoped to make during a reelection campaign that he ultimately decided he could not continue.

Image

“Americans are going to have to choose between moving forward or backward, between hope and hate, between unity and division,” Biden said. “We have to decide — do we still believe in honesty, decency, respect, freedom, justice and democracy.”

That last item — democracy — and defending it is “more important than any title,” Biden said.

Biden outlined a hefty to-do list for his final months

The president says he’s going to keep working over his final six months in office. He’s seeking to make the case for his legacy of sweeping domestic legislation and the renewal of alliances abroad.

His to-do list was full of weighty issues. He said he’d work to end the war in Gaza, bring home the hostages and try “to bring peace and security to the Middle East and end this war.” Biden meets Thursday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu .

He’s going to continue to work to lower costs for families and defend personal freedoms, keep calling out “hate and extremism” and push to end gun violence.

He also said he would continue to work on his initiative to end cancer as we know it and push for Supreme Court reforms .

“I’m going to keep working,” he said.

He is willingly handing off power to a new generation

Biden finally understood what Democrats had been telling him — that it was time to hand off power to a younger generation — and he embraced it, calling for “fresh voices, yes, younger voices” in politics.

“I’ve decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. It’s the best way to unite our nation,” he said, even as he believed his presidency was deserving of a second term.

For months, Biden insisted that only he could go up against Trump and win. But that changed following his debate with Trump on June 27, when he spoke haltingly, lost his train of thought and failed to fact-check the former president’s falsehoods. The performance raised a chorus of questions about his age and ability to do the job another four years and pushed Democrats to increasingly call for him to step aside. The standoff dragged for 24 days before Biden yielded, saying he needed to unify his party.

The tone and setting were solemn

Biden is not a stranger to the sober address, delivering remarks on weighty matters such as the fate of democracy and voting rights at historically significant landmarks across the country and around the globe.

But Biden has used the formal trappings of an Oval Office address — a tool used by presidents in times of national crisis or to capture a key moment in history — sparsely, with Wednesday’s speech marking just the fourth time that he has sat behind the Resolute Desk to speak directly to the nation.

His tone was solemn, the delivery careful and deliberate. He was surrounded by family and close aides as he gave an address willingly relinquishing power — one that no politician wants to make.

“The great thing about America is here, kings and dictators do not rule — that people do,” Biden said as he closed his address. “History is in your hands. The power is in your hands. The idea of America lies in your hands.”

Biden made a subtle push for his vice president

In the official setting of the Oval Office, Biden steered clear of overt political talk. But he still praised Vice President Kamala Harris as “tough” and “capable,” and gave a not-so-subtle push to voters.

“She’s been an incredible partner for her leadership, for our country,” he said. “Now the choice is up to you, the American people. ”

First lady Jill Biden posted a hand-written note after the president’s speech thanking “those who never wavered, who refused to doubt.” She thanked supporters for putting their trust in the president. “Now it’s time to put that trust in Kamala.”

Biden, aides say, knows that if Harris loses, he’ll be criticized for staying in the race too long and not giving her or another Democrat time to effectively mount a campaign against Trump. If she wins, she’ll ensure his policy victories are secured and expanded, and he’ll be remembered for a decision to step aside for the next generation of leadership.

Emotional Biden Family Joins Joe for ‘Pass the Torch’ Speech

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

President Joe Biden , in a live, televised Oval Office address to the nation Wednesday while surrounded by family, explained his decision to “pass the torch to a new generation” via his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor, and, with a clear nod to GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump , told Americans that they have the power to make sure that “kings and dictators do not rule.”

Biden, having recovered from COVID, returned to Washington from Delaware earlier in the day, marking his first time back in the White House since ending his reelection bid last weekend.

That announcement, effectively bringing an end to a half-century in American politics, was borne out of a recognition that “personal ambition” must take a back seat to the interests of the nation, he said Wednesday.

U.S. President Joe Biden speaks from the Oval Office of the White House on July 24, 2024 in Washington, DC.

“The sacred cause of this country is larger than any one of us. Those who champion that cause cherish it so much. We must unite to protect it. In recent weeks, it’s become clear to me that I need to unite my party in this critical endeavor. I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America’s future—all merited a second term,” Biden said, with his wife, Jill , and children, Hunter and Ashley Biden , looking on. “Nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition.”

“I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That is the best way to unite our nation,” the president explained in his second address from behind the Resolute Desk this month, and fourth overall.

U.S. President Joe Biden hugs family members after addressing the nation from the Oval Office of the White House on July 24, 2024 in Washington, DC.

Jill and Hunter were two figures who reportedly had an intimate involvement in the president’s decision-making process over the turbulent past few weeks. The latter was joined by his wife, Melissa Biden, while the president’s daughter, Ashley, was also present alongside husband Howard Krein. The president’s granddaughter, Finnegan, was seen wiping away a tear after Biden had concluded his remarks and stood up to embrace his family.

“Over the next six months I will be focused on doing my job as President,” Biden added. That means I will continue to lower costs for hard-working families and grow our economy. I will keep defending our personal freedoms and our civil rights—from the right to vote, to the right to choose,” he added.

Harris, Biden went on to say, was fully equipped to pick up where he left off.

“She is experienced. She is tough. She is capable. She has been an incredible partner for me and a leader for our country,” he told viewers.

Biden, who portrayed Trump as a threat to democratic institutions during his campaign, continued to emphasize that point, without naming him.

“The defense of democracy is more important than any title. I draw strength, and find joy, in working for the American people. But this sacred task of perfecting our Union is not about me. It’s about you. Your families. Your futures. It’s about ‘We the People,’” he said, after invoking Benjamin Franklin’s famous quote about being able to “keep” the republic.

“The great thing about America is here, kings and dictators do not rule,” he then stressed. “The people do. History is in your hands. The power is in your hands. The idea of America lies in your hands.”

As if on cue, Trump couldn’t help but gripe about Biden’s remarks. The president’s speech was “barely understandable, and sooo bad,” he wrote on Truth Social, adding later that Biden and his likely opponent in November “are a great embarrassment to America.”

Democratic responses were predictably gracious, as was First Lady Jill Biden.

“To those who never wavered, to those who refused to doubt, to those who always believed, my heart is full of gratitude,” she made clear in a handwritten letter posted on X. “Thank you for the trust you put in Joe—now it’s time to put that trust in Kamala.”

Barack Obama, meanwhile, approvingly quoted his former vice president.

“‘The sacred cause of this country is larger than any one of us.’” Joe Biden has stayed true to these words again and again over a lifetime of service to the American people,” he wrote on X. “Thank you, @POTUS.”

After delivering his remarks and spending a few moments with his family, Biden emerged from the Oval Office where he was greeted with rapturous applause from White House staffers in the Rose Garden. They in turn were rewarded with one of the president’s favorite foods: ice cream.

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

speech about family 100 words

By Maggie Astor

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated July 26, 2024

Follow the latest news about the 2024 election, and the Trump and Harris campaigns.

With Vice President Kamala Harris poised to replace President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.

Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony: All you need to know

A concept design of the parade of athletes on the Seine during the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony.

Ambitious, historic, spectacular – these are some of the words used to describe the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony since the first plans were unveiled three years ago.

Set to be the first Olympic Games Opening Ceremony held outside a stadium , the 26 July celebration will transform the French capital into a stadium and theatre as the traditional parade of athletes takes place in boats along the Seine, passing the most iconic Parisian landmarks.

Here is all you need to know about the Opening Ceremony.

  • Paris 2024 day-by-day highlights: When to catch the top moments from the Olympic Games
  • Twelve of the biggest athletes to watch at Paris 2024

When will the Opening Ceremony be held?

The Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will take place on Friday, 26 July .

The event will start at 19:30 CEST and is expected to last more than three hours.

Why is this ceremony historic?

Paris 2024 will mark the first time in history of the Olympic Summer Games that the Opening Ceremony is held outside a stadium.

Instead of familiar images of athletes marching out along an athletics track, guests and viewers will be treated to a colourful river parade through the heart of the French capital.

The Seine , the city’s main water artery, will substitute for the traditional track, the quays will become spectator stands , while the setting sun reflecting off famous Parisian landmarks will provide the backdrop for the event.

This outdoor concept also makes Paris 2024 the largest Opening Ceremony in terms of audience and geographical coverage .

What is the route of the parade?

The parade route along the Seine is a visual journey through Parisian history and architecture.

The Austerlitz Bridge next to the Jardin des Plantes is the starting point for the flotilla, which will then continue west for 6 kilometres along the Seine, passing under historic bridges and by iconic landmarks, such as the Notre-Dame and the Louvre , as well as some Games venues, including the Esplanade des Invalides and the Grand Palais .

Grouped on the boats with their national teams, the athletes will ultimately arrive opposite the Trocadero – the esplanade across from the Eiffel Tower – where the official protocols will be carried out, the Olympic cauldron lit, and the Paris 2024 Games officially declared open.

How many athletes will take part?

Almost 100 boats carrying an estimated 10,500 athletes will float along the Seine during the parade. The larger of the 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) represented in the parade will have boats to themselves, while the smaller ones will share boats.

Camera equipment set up on the decks will allow spectators to see the athletes up close and witness their emotions.

What entertainment performances can we expect?

Thomas Jolly , a French theatre director and actor, is overseeing the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies as artistic director .

While most of the entertainment acts remain under wraps, based on the hints so far, we can expect a show on a grand scale with an eclectic mash up of the old and the new. Speaking to the media in January, Jolly said that he wants to showcase the contrasting cultures of France, be that opera or rap, thus bringing together all the pieces that form the nation's diverse cultural identity.

For his part, ceremonies choreographer Maud Le Pladec promised that every bridge along the parade route will have dancers on it. Le Pladec will lead 400 dancers out of the total 3,000 artists who are set to take part in the Paris 2024 Opening and Closing Ceremonies, all decked out in one-of-a-kind costumes by Daphne Burki .

The French television presenter serves as the costume director for the show, leading a team of hundreds of dressmakers, hair stylists and makeup artists. Burki’s focus on sustainability also means there will be many vintage and upcycled pieces used in the ceremonies, mixed in with newer creations.

What will the athletes be wearing?

Artists will not be the only ones showing their style at the Opening Ceremony. With a line-up of luxury brands designing athlete uniforms, expect the Olympians to shine as well.

Team USA mix preppy jackets with jeans for a cool, all-American look, while Italian athletes will show up in casual, dark blue sets . Hosts France worked with a luxury brand to come up with vests and jackets that tie in with the general Paris 2024 look.

Other teams, such as Canada, Great Britain and Sweden , opted for a more athleisure look, all evoking the colour palettes of their national flags.

Some nations went even further with the patriotic details. Mongolian outfits have already created a buzz on social networks for their intricate embroidery and traditional silhouettes .

Brazil and Guatemala ’s looks are also sure to turn heads. Brazil’s denim jackets feature animals that are native to the country, while the Guatemalan athletes are dressed up in folkloric hats and bags to make a colourful statement on the Seine.

What are the different ways to watch the Opening Ceremony?

Almost 600,000 people will be able to enjoy the Opening Ceremony in person. True to its slogan, “Games Wide Open”, Paris 2024 tried to make the event accessible to as many people as possible by taking it outside of the traditional stadium setting.

There were 222,000 free tickets available to watch the parade from the upper banks of the Seine, in addition to 104,000 paid tickets on the lower quays. This marks the first Opening Ceremony where most spectators will not pay an admission fee – another historic milestone for Paris 2024.

Those in Paris who could not get tickets will be able to watch the Opening Ceremony on 80 giant screens set up throughout the city.

An additional 1.5 billion people from around the world are expected to tune into the television broadcasts of the ceremony.
