Research points to intensive daily tutoring as one of the most effective ways to help academically struggling children catch up. There have been a hundred randomized control trials, but one of the most cited is of a tutoring program in Chicago high schools, where ninth and 10th graders learned an extra year or two of math from a daily dose of tutoring. That’s the kind of result that could offset pandemic learning losses, which have remained devastating and stubborn nearly four years after Covid first erupted, and it’s why the Biden Administration  has recommended that schools use their $190 billion in federal recovery funds on tutoring.

This tutoring evidence, however, was generated before the pandemic, and I was curious about what post-pandemic research says about how tutoring is going now that almost 40 percent of U.S. public schools say they’re offering high-dosage tutoring and more than one out of 10 students (11 percent) are receiving it this 2023-24 school year. Here are four lessons. 

  • Why timing matters

Scheduling tutoring time during normal school hours and finding classroom space to conduct it are huge challenges for school leaders. The schedule is already packed with other classes and there aren’t enough empty classrooms. The easiest option is to tack tutoring on to the end of the school day as an after-school program.

New Mexico did just that and offered high school students free 45-minute online video sessions three times a week in the evenings and weekends. The tutors were from Saga Education, the same tutoring organization that had produced spectacular results in Chicago. Only about 500 students signed up out of more than 34,000 who were eligible, according to a June 2023 report from MDRC, an outside research organization. Researchers concluded that after-school tutoring wasn’t a “viable solution for making a sizable and lasting impact.” The state has since switched to scheduling tutoring during the school day.

Attendance is spotty too. Many after-school tutoring programs around the country report that even students who sign up don’t attend regularly.

  • A hiring dilemma 

The job of tutor is now the fastest-growing position in the K–12 sector, but 40 percent of schools say they’re struggling to hire tutors. That’s not surprising in a red-hot job market, where many companies say it’s tough to find employees. 

Researchers at MDRC in a December 2023 report wrote about different hiring strategies that schools around the country are using. I was flabbergasted to read that New Mexico was paying online tutors $50 an hour to tutor from their homes. Hourly rates of $20 to $30 are fairly common in my reporting. But at least the state was able to offer tutoring to students in remote, rural areas where it would otherwise be impossible to find qualified tutors.

Tutoring companies are a booming business. Schools are using them because they take away the burden of hiring, training and supervising tutors. However, Fulton County, Georgia, which includes Atlanta, found that a tutoring company’s curriculum might have nothing to do with what children are learning in their classrooms and that there’s too little communication between tutors and classroom teachers. Tutors were quitting at high rates and replaced with new ones; students weren’t able to form long-term relationships with their tutors, which researchers say is critical to the success of tutoring. 

When Fulton County schools hired tutors directly, they were more integrated into the school community. However, schools considered them to be “paraprofessionals” and felt there were more urgent duties than tutoring that they needed to do, from substitute teaching and covering lunch duty to assisting teachers. 

Chicago took the burden off schools and hired the tutors from the central office. But schools preferred tutors who were from the neighborhood because they could potentially become future teachers. The MDRC report described a sort of catch-22. Schools don’t have the capacity to hire and train tutors, but the tutors that are sent to them from outside vendors or a central office aren’t ideal either. 

Oakland, Calif., experienced many of the obstacles that schools are facing when trying to deliver tutoring at a large scale to thousands of students. The district attempted to give kindergarten through second grade students a half hour of reading tutoring a day. As described by a December 2023 case study of tutoring by researchers at the Center for Reinventing Public Education (CRPE), Oakland struggled with hiring, scheduling and real estate. It hired an outside tutoring organization to help, but it too had trouble recruiting tutors, who complained of low pay. Finding space was difficult. Some tutors had to work in the hallways with children. 

The good news is that students who worked with trained tutors made the same gains in reading as those who were given extra reading help by teachers. But the reading gains for students were inconsistent. Some students progressed less in reading than students typically do in a year without tutoring. Others gained almost an additional year’s worth of reading instruction – 88 percent more.

  • The effectiveness of video tutoring 

Bringing armies of tutors into school buildings is a logistical and security nightmare. Online tutoring solves that problem. Many vendors have been trying to mimic the model of successful high dosage tutoring by scheduling video conferencing sessions many times a week with the same well-trained tutor, who is using a good curriculum with step-by-step methods. But it remains a question whether students are as motivated to work as hard with video tutoring as they are in person. Everyone knows that 30 hours of Zoom instruction during school closures was a disaster. It’s unclear whether small, regular doses of video tutoring can be effective. 

In 2020 and 2021, there were two studies of online video tutoring. A randomized control trial in Italy produced good results, especially when the students received tutoring four times a week. The tutoring was less than half as potent when the sessions fell to twice a week, according to a paper published in September 2023 . Another study in Chicago found zero results from video tutoring. But the tutors were unpaid volunteers and many students missed out on sessions. Both tutors and tutees often failed to show up.

The first randomized controlled trial of a virtual tutoring program for reading was conducted during the 2022-23 school year at a large charter school network in Texas. Kindergarten, first and second graders received 20 minutes of video tutoring four times a week, from September through May, with an early reading tutoring organization called OnYourMark. Despite the logistical challenges of setting up little children on computers with headphones, the tutored children ended the year with higher DIBELS scores , a measure of reading proficiency for young children, than students who didn’t receive the tutoring. One-to-one video tutoring sometimes produced double the reading gains as video tutoring in pairs, demonstrating a difference between online and in-person tutoring, where larger groups of two and three students can be very effective too. That study was published in October 2023. 

Video tutoring hasn’t always been a success. A tutoring program by Intervene K-12, a tutoring company, received high marks from reviewers at Johns Hopkins University , but outside evaluators didn’t find benefits when it was tested on students in Texas. In an unpublished study, the National Student Support Accelerator, a Stanford University organization that is promoting and studying tutoring, found no difference in year-end state test scores between students who received the tutoring and those who received other small group support. Study results can depend greatly on whether the comparison control group is getting nothing or another extra-help alternative.

Matthew Kraft, a Brown University economist who studies tutoring, says there hasn’t been an ideal study that pits online video tutoring directly against in-person tutoring to measure the difference between the two. Existing studies, he said, show some “encouraging signs.” 

The most important thing for researchers to sort out is how many students a tutor can work with online at once. It’s unclear if groups of three or four, which can be effective in person, are as effective online. “The comments we’re getting from tutors are that it’s significantly different to tutor three students online than it is to tutor three students in person,” Kraft said.

In my observations of video tutoring, I have seen several students in groups of three angle their computers away from their faces. I’ve watched tutors call students’ names over and over again, trying to get their attention. To me, students appear far more focused and energetic in one-to-one video tutoring.

  • How humans and machines could take turns

A major downside to every kind of tutoring, both in-person and online, is its cost. The tutoring that worked so well in Chicago can run $4,000 per student. It’s expensive because students are getting over a hundred hours of tutoring and schools need to pay the tutors’ hourly wages. Several researchers are studying how to lower the costs of tutoring by combining human tutoring with online practice work. 

In one pre-pandemic study that was described in a March 2023 research brief by the University of Chicago’s Education Lab, students worked in groups of four with an in-person tutor. The tutors worked closely with two students at a time while the other two students worked on practice problems independently on ALEKS, a widely used computerized tutoring system developed by academic researchers and owned by McGraw-Hill. Each day the students switched:  the ALEKS kids worked with the tutor and the tutored kids turned to ALEKS. The tutor sat with all four students together, monitoring the ALEKS kids to make sure they were doing their math on the computer.

The math gains nearly matched what the researchers had found in a prior study of human tutoring alone, where tutors worked with only two students at a time and required twice as many tutors. The cost was $2,000 per student, much less than the usual $3,000-$4,000 per student price tag of the human tutoring program.

Researchers at the University of Chicago have been testing the same model with online video tutoring, instead of in-person, and said they are seeing “encouraging initial indications.” Currently, the research team is studying how many students one tutor can handle at a time, from four to as many as eight students, alternating between humans and ed tech, in order to find out if the sessions are still effective.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University conducted a similar study of swapping between human tutoring and practicing math on computers. Instead of ALEKS, this pilot study used Mathia, another computerized tutoring system developed by academic researchers and owned by Carnegie Learning. This was not a randomized control trial, but it did take place during the pandemic in 2020-21. Middle school students doubled the amount of math they learned compared to similar students who didn’t receive the tutoring, according to Ken Koedinger, a Carnegie Mellon professor who was part of the research team. 

“AI tutors work when students use them,” said Koedinger. “But if students aren’t using them, they obviously don’t work.” The human tutors are better at motivating the students to keep practicing, he said. The computer system gives each student personalized practice work, targeted to their needs, instant feedback and hints.

Technology can also guide the tutors. With one early reading program, called Chapter One, in-person tutors work with young elementary school children in the classroom. Chapter One’s website keeps track of every child’s progress. The tutor’s screen indicates which student to work with next and what skills that student needs to work on.  It also suggests phonics lessons and activities that the tutor can use during the session.  A two-year randomized control trial, published in December 2023 , found that the tutored children – many of whom received short five-minute bursts of tutoring at a time – outperformed children who didn’t receive the tutoring. 

The next frontier in tutoring, of course, is generative AI, such as Chat GPT. Researchers are studying how students learn directly from Khan Academy’s Khanmigo , which gives step-by-step, personalized guidance, like a tutor, on how to solve problems. Other researchers are using this technology to help coach human tutors so that they can better respond to students’ misunderstandings and confusion. I’ll be looking out for these studies and will share the results with you.

I read this report on post-pandemic tutoring with great interest. I agree with your findings regarding the difficulties schools are facing with struggling students that have fallen behind and how to best support them. I have found, after following this closely for the past few years since Covid, that the research has been too conflicting due to limited studies and too many variables. The number of struggling students is staggering and schools are scrambling in an effort to make it work for everyone. In an effort to turn the tide, I have done a lot of research on the latest strategies that have proven effective in teaching struggling students core skills such as teaching students strategies that link reading comprehension to test taking by connecting questions with answers. I then created a coach certification program for tutors where they master the art of successful coaching. I also created a student workbook to go along with it so students track their progress and start to feel successful instead of stressful. I am testing it in several schools in our area for the past year and the results have been amazing so far! I would therefore conclude that effective tutoring requires close school contact and well-trained tutors or coaches, as I prefer to call them. (Tutors teach a subject whereas coaches teach a student until they’re able learn on their own.) It also requires flexibilty within a structured framework so scheduling is individualized according to students’ preferences and needs. I found myself nodding along when I read about the twice a week tutoring being so much less effective than four times weekly. Another core component that’s important to target is proper goal-setting and continuous performance assessment. As students improvements were evident, they began tracking their goals and felt empowered and motivated to achieve academic excellence! As the parent of a struggling eighth grader related earlier today, ” Previously, my daughter would avoid sharing any of her test scores and would deny or refuse facing her struggles. Now that she’s feeling so much better with her school performance due to her support, she’s asking me to take a look at her test scores and is positively glowing!” As educators, it is up to us to create an effective tutoring program that works so that students become successful, independent learners for school and life beyond the brick walls. Everything You Need To Know About Online Tutoring

Tutoring can be pricey. But it works. Here’s what you need to know. ​​

The idea that tutoring is solely for the elite is also rapidly changing. This is particularly true in the time of COVID-19, when online learning is becoming the norm, not the exception. Online tutoring and education options are often more reasonably priced than their in-person counterparts.

Around the country, schools are considering tutoring to address the problems brought about by the pandemic. Since COVID-19, more students than ever are falling behind grade level. This is true also for students who previously did not have difficulties in school.

Success rates for tutoring in schools make this an exciting possible solution to raise student achievement post-Coronavirus.

Students who fell behind specifically due to school closures may benefit from high-dosage tutoring in the short term. These same students will likely not require this kind of tutoring long term.

Parents are also getting into the act. This is what I did in my family, paying for a tutoring to help my kids learn German. I made sure to do my homework, interview a few different ones before settling one a woman who helped my kids each morning at around 11 am.

In the initial stages of implementing a high-dosage online tutoring program, schools might consider including a wider variety of students in tutoring programs (with various achievement levels and academic backgrounds.) The student demographic most likely to have fallen behind during the pandemic are English Language Learners, students with disabilities, and those with limited access to the internet at home. ​ Over time, after students who usually achieve at grade level, or above, have caught up on missed material, tutoring programs could prioritize low-performing students. This goes also for students who particularly struggled with distance learning during COVID-19, and require longer term curriculum support.

Part of what makes tutoring and one-on-one teaching especially effective is pedagogical content knowledge: knowledge of common misconceptions, common weak areas, understanding how to diagnose what’s holding a student back, and knowing strategies to address those misconceptions.

What’s clear is that tutoring has a big impact on outcomes. A  2016 study  found that tutoring for ninth and tenth graders creates the biggest impact.  According to  interviews  with schools with current programs, and another  study , a two-to-one ratio is optimal for effective tutoring.

In  2017, a study  examined the impact of high-dosage tutoring (i.e. frequent sessions) on student achievement in New York City Public Schools. Over a three year period, schools offered up to 130 hours of 4:1 student-to-tutor tutoring for middle school students. The approximate cost per student was $2,200 per year.

New York City schools used a guided reading model, with 1-on-1 ‘read aloud’ sessions, independent reading, vocabulary reviews, and group discussions. The project proved a highly effective effort to reckon with disparities in reading ability for black and latino public school students. The experiment was twice as effective at increasing reading comprehension as the Promise Academy Middle School in the Harlem Children’s Zone, and KIPP Charter Middle Schools. Typically it is higher income families who have access to such benefits for their children, but the tutoring experiment showed what a difference it might make if that weren’t the case.

In  Houston, Texas  in 2014, school districts had success using a 3:1 student-tutor ratio program, at $2,500 per student. A  related study , found the return on investment for intervention and tutoring in secondary schools, to be between 12.93% and 13.42%.

​For parents, the cost of a private tutor can range from $11 to $30 per hour. As previously mentioned, the positive effects of tutoring increase, according to the session frequency. Yet, even a few sessions can also have an impact, and make tutoring accessible to a wider range of families.

What Makes For A Good Online Tutor?

Collaboration . Tutoring works best when tutors support students in solving problems themselves. This creates a more active learning environment. Tutors have to hold back however on telling students how to perform a procedure correctly. Knowing how to let students solve problems is really the hallmark of a good tutor. That also means learning methods of giving feedback–such as providing  immediate feedback  that is constructive–should be a major area of training for new tutors.

Engagement . Tutors will be more effective if they can spot disengagement or low self-efficacy in students. Lack of engagement often manifests as low-effort responses, diminished communication with the tutor, or signs of frustration. Tutors who know some strategies to re-engage students (e.g., switching topics, reframing the problem, etc.) are likely to be more effective.

Understanding . Tutors ought to have a solid understanding of how students improve over time. For instance, creating space to review prior material, even if students seem to have “mastered” it once, is critical. Simple blocked time working on a topic often leads to a false sense of long-term mastery.

Other Things to Look For.  Motivation is important. For a while, I would just hiring kids on the block to tutor my kids because it just helped with motivation.

That said, tutors need to enter tutoring sessions with a strong sense of what concepts and skills the student lacks, and be prepared with activities to address those misconceptions. Those who come to every tutoring session knowing how students are doing on the assessments are likely to be much more effective. This should go beyond just “the student didn’t do fraction multiplication very well, so let’s have them practice more multiplication problems.”

The more that tutors can pinpoint the type of error (for instance, the student still occasionally finds common denominators instead of multiplying them), the more effective tutoring sessions will be.

Research into math teaching strategies illustrates that students often use “blended” strategies as they move from an inferior (or incorrect) strategy to a superior (or correct) strategy. The change doesn’t usually happen all at once. Tutors are in a great position to help students understand what they need to work on, or to develop study habits that will continue to pay dividends into the future.​

Several studies demonstrate online tutoring can improve learning outcomes – but it is more effective when mimicking aspects of in-person tutoring. The key to online tutoring is to identify which elements are typically missing from online experiences, and add these as platform features.

Does Online Tutoring Work? Are There Any Marked Disadvantages To Online Tutoring?

But tutoring programs, online or in person, are not without their challenges. Online tutoring of course has potential disadvantages. The body of research on tutoring effectiveness has relied mostly (but not exclusively) on in-person experiences. Several studies demonstrate online tutoring can improve learning outcomes – but it is more effective when mimicking aspects of in-person tutoring.

The key to online tutoring is to identify which elements are typically missing from online experiences, and add these as platform features.

In person, for instance, tutors can watch as students solve problems in real time, stepping in as needed. An online tutoring platform where tutors can see students solve problems (via an online whiteboard, or a webcam to view student problem solving) would offer an equivalent.

Keep in mind, using an online whiteboard strictly for live demonstrations by the tutor (i.e. for how to solve problems) is likely to be less effective. An alternative or complementary approach might be for students to submit work to the tutor beforehand, letting the tutor review it, and advise the student during the tutoring session. This kind of strategy might work well in subjects like writing.

Be sure to test out your tutor. Ask for them to give you a trial lesson. Often times, tutoring is a matter of getting a good fit. 

Here’s A Quick Breakdown Of The Major Online Tutoring Platforms:

Tutor.com  — Part of a larger education platform, the Princeton Review. This platform offers student-tutor individual matching, among other services. Tutor.com has relationships with K-12 schools, for on-demand 24/7 tutoring, scheduled tutoring, drop-off essay review, and diagnostic quizzes. Overall, they have roughly ~3,000 experts covering 60 K-12 subjects.

Wyzant.com  — A student-tutor matching service. Wyzant does both in-person and online tutoring, and invests heavily in the online component. Like most other online platforms, they have their own online tutoring software (a white board + streaming video with various bells and whistles; lessons can also be recorded and re-watched.)

Chegg.com  — Part of a larger education platform, Chegg.com offers both text, audio, and video tutoring, by using an online whiteboard. Although they offer both on-demand and scheduled lessons, their focus is on-demand. The focus is more on high school and undergraduate student tutoring.

Tutoreye.com  — A good option for those looking for different tutoring possibilities: several models are available from student-to-tutor matching model (Tutoreye vets the tutors), to support for libraries and homeschooling. As with most platforms, Tutoreye uses an interactive whiteboard, and the ability to record and replay sessions.

Skooli.com  — Students do the matching by looking at a handful of recommended tutors and picking which tutors to request. Skooli has an interactive white board to facilitate lessons, which notably integrates with the Google suite of Docs, Slides, and Sheets. The emphasis is on safety and security, with a capacity for up to 300,000 students.

Revolution Prep  — Places emphasis on test prep. Small group tutoring available for up to 8 students, but only for test prep. One-on-one tutoring covers test prep and academic subjects for a decent amount of subjects. Individual students can purchase a bulk buy in hours, e.g. 24hrs of tutoring or 36 hours of tutoring. They use a Zoom browser plug-in – unclear what affordances that platform has (beyond screen sharing and video discussion). All tutors are full-time employees.

Club Z!  — For individual students seeking tutors both in-person and online tutoring. Club Z! in-person tutoring franchises exist throughout the U.S. Standard range of academic topics. No specific online tutoring platform, and it wasn’t clear from our analysis what their process is for vetting tutors.

Tutorme.com  — On-demand student-to-tutor matching. Interactive whiteboard available. Scheduling ahead seems possible. Students can stick with tutors they like. Wide variety of academic and professional subjects, plus career counseling, but emphasis is on high school and adult education. No elementary or middle school subjects.

Smarthinking.com  — Wide variety of tutoring services: “drop-in” tutoring (when a student needs help immediately), scheduled sessions, space for questions for tutors to address later, and recorded sessions.Part of a larger education platform (Pearson). Tutors are part-time, but most have advanced degrees, and cover a wide range of subjects.

Cignition  — One-on-one online tutoring in math, primarily to middle-school students. Tutoring is available 24/7, with a collaborative workspace for students and tutors during the tutoring session. Student-tutor matches are made after inquiry sent by parents. Access to their math game (Fog Isle) and diagnostic information can help personalize learning. The majority of tutors have Master’s degrees.

Learn To Be  — A non-profit organization focused on tutoring under-served students. Tutors are volunteers and about a quarter of the families using tutoring services pay a small monthly fee. The rest do not have to pay.

SpecialEdTutoring.com  — Student-tutor matching program for students with learning disabilities. Matching process is based on a consultation. All tutors have at least a B.A. in Special Education. ​

Will My School Pay For Online Tutoring?

To explain, states and school districts have the ability to use existing federal funding streams to fund tutoring programs (both on and offline.) High-quality academic tutoring is considered an acceptable use of funds for school districts under Title I of the Every Student Succeeds Act. Tutoring is also an allowable use of funds under the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program in ESSA.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) can further fund academic and social-emotional-behavioral interventions to help students access grade-level standards. As needed, individualized education programs (IEPs) could require students to receive 1:1 intervention in some academic areas. School districts can blend funding from ESSA and IDEA to expand tutoring programs.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Stimulus (CARES) Act is another possible funding stream. The stimulus package allocates roughly $31 billion to states and school districts to adjust instruction and school services in the face of COVID-19. ESSA provides more funding for economically disadvantaged students, and both states and school districts have significant flexibility in how they spend those funds. States and school districts could use a portion of this funding to scale tutoring programs.

The present work is focused on the key skills’ analysis of the e-tutor in Ecampus online University on the bases of the reference models described in literature. The analysis is based on a validated questionnaire translated in Italian and submitted to a sample of 220 ToL of the university. The specific objective was: (a) map the tasks, roles and duties of e-tutors; (b) validate a survey tool that on a quantitative basis that can detect the e-tutor skills; (c) improve the TOL and TD skills of the eCampus university, thanks to the data collected. The results show how the role of e-tutor in this University is hybrid, it does not imply a specific disciplinary competence but presupposes a pedagogical background linked to the actual design of the student’s learning experience within the online university. The development of these skills rely largely on day by day practice, through a more or less implicit process of reflection and, implicitly, the reference to an informal community that offers guidance and support to novices.

Edugraff is an Australian EdTech company providing a versatile and intuitive online tutoring platform for students, teachers and coaching centres.

Requirement

This client was introduced to us by one of our friends. He said that the client is trying to build an online tutoring platform and his initial attempt did not materialise. This gave us a chance to co-create a detailed specification using the client’s inputs. This was the beginning of a long term relationship and success story. The client wanted features that are easy and fun to use. Also flexible to the needs of their end users who are students having individual learning requirements and online teachers with subject matter expertise.

When they approached us, the client was going through a journey of identifying their end user needs in detail. We need to form a team that worked together with client to create a good requirement specification document.

We developed a Minimum Viable product that met their needs and structured the platform to be scalable, reliable and secure. Further upgrades were done by working along with the client, and creating a change management system so that requirement changes were well captured. We realised that the best approach was to build in stages or short sprints. So we were able to focus on the changing needs of the client as the client discovered new requirements and validated its outcome. We suggested an AWS hosted PHP Yii 2.0, MySQL platform for a faster turnaround. The features included are a whiteboard for one-to-one and group classes, session scheduling, CCAvenue integration for billing, student wallet, and chat. Security and scalability were the other two major factors that we considered while selecting the development platform. edugraff.com is having students and teachers from many parts of the world. Further enhancements are being done too.

Try, try and try again, this is the success mantra! This project reiterates the necessity of having a proper system study and documentation of requirements prior to spending time on development. A good lather is half the shave! The project also gave as insights into the importance of an effective change management system and providing a solution that is cost-effective now and while scaling up.

The Center for Academics, Success, & Equity (CASE) provides access and opportunities for students to expand their learning outside of the classroom through quality academic, supportive programs and resources. The opportunities promote students in the development of positive academic habits, practice, and behaviors. Students will develop critical academic and nonacademic cognitive skills that are needed to lead to a deeper classroom engagement. Students have access to studying in groups, one-on-one direct tutoring, and computer-based learning through CASE’s tutoring services. By attending tutoring sessions, students will become independent learners with an interest in lifelong learning.

The CASE Tutoring Center provides free drop-in tutoring to ISyE students; no appointments are necessary. Peer tutors offer assistance for the advertised ISyE courses. Tutoring sessions are Mondays-Thursdays, 5:00pm-8:00pm and virtually via the Institute’s Knack partnership.

Mission Statement

The mission of the CASE Tutoring Center is to provide an array of comprehensive tutorial and academic success services in the industrial engineering courses to enhance the educational success for all the industrial engineering students through strategic and highly-quality instructional-based support programming.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to expand and grow their internal methods to approach coursework problems with skill efficiently in critical thinking of their reasoning processes and identifying strategies that help them succeed.
  • Students will be able to enhance their approach to learning from instruction in their industrial engineering courses by becoming more skilled problem-solvers and strategic leaners.
  • Students will have access to trained peer tutors, study groups, online tutoring, technology, and resources.
  • Students will be able to understand and explicate their reasoning processes and procedures.

Students may access online tutoring through Knack. Students will need to refer to Knack’s schedule for subject availability and the times they are offered. ff

Yes, CASE offers tutoring. Tutoring sessions are drop-in sessions. If tutoring services are not offered, students can stop by the CASE Office, located in the Academic Office, to complete a tutoring subject request form. Students are also encouraged to contact their faculty for further assistance.

What is a tutor?

In the broadest sense, a tutor's job is to help fellow students understand what you have already succeeded in learning, using your previous classroom and academic experiences as a foundation. This is a learning experience for both tutor and student, as both individuals discover different ways of problem solving through collaboration. It is an excellent way to share ideas, but it is imperative to keep in mind that it is a two-way street. You are venturing into a job that will benefit your classmates and you.

Tutor Eligibility

  • Be currently enrolled as a full-time student at Georgia Tech.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above
  • Maintain a B average or higher in course(s) tutoring
  • Display enthusiasm for learning
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of tutored subject matter
  • Show a deep desire to help others with their learning process
  • Punctuality, generosity, flexibility, personal organization
  • Have great initiative and strong work ethic
  • Demonstrate reliability and punctuality.

The tutor will announce available sessions within the first 2 weeks of class for the corresponding course with the time and locations for the sessions.

Student participants will learn how to study effectively- both independently and collaboratively. They will also develop a deeper understanding of course material and how it applies to their world. This will translate into better grades and a higher level of confidence that they belong at Georgia Tech and can succeed academically here.

Tutoring can help students learn how to study both independently and collaboratively. It also helps students learn from one another, verify actual course knowledge, challenge them to teach material back to the tutor and prepare them for future courses.

Tutoring cannot replace the professor’s lectures or in-class assignments. Tutors will never cover material in their sessions that has not been already covered in class. Attending tutoring sessions does not guarantee that a student will be successful on their exams and other assignments. Students must still be responsible for their own learning.

Tutoring sessions are free to students. Students are encouraged to come as often as they like; however, statistics show that the more frequently students attend the sessions, the better their grades are (University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2018).

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that targets historically difficult courses. SI is a non-remedial approach to learning enrichment designed to increase student performance and retention. SI offers regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions to all students enrolled in targeted courses. SI study sessions are informal seminars in which students review notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and prepare for examinations. Students learn how to integrate course content with reasoning and study skills (University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2018).

Peer Tutoring

Peer tutors are your fellow students who are trained to work with you on an individual or small-group basis. Tutors can help clarify course content and assignments, connect class notes and readings and practice problem solving.

A tutor can help you reinforce what you already know, model new ways of learning, monitor your progress over several sessions and help you get ready to ask specific questions of your professor. Peer tutors have been trained to work with you in ways that your professor may not have time to do in class. Peer tutoring is a great supplement to attending class and office hours.

Each peer tutor is available for a minimum of seven hours of tutoring per week. Undergraduates at Case Western Reserve can schedule up to five tutoring appointments per week, all free of charge.

Scheduling Peer Tutoring Sessions

TutorTrac is the tool we use to schedule tutoring hours and locations. Multiple locations throughout campus are available for tutoring, including: virtual appointments, Kelvin Smith Library, Olin, Wade Tutoring Room and Fribley Tutoring Room.

If you are unable to find an available tutoring appointment on TutorTrac, please submit a tutoring request using the tutoring request form .

We strive to fulfill every request in a timely manner; however, this is not always possible. We can only fulfill a request if a qualified tutor is identified. While you are waiting for your request to be fulfilled, please make use of Supplemental Instruction (SI) as available and utilize office hours with the faculty member to answer and clarify any questions.

After submitting the tutoring request form, your request will be reviewed by the tutoring program supervisor. Once reviewed, current tutors will be contacted to find a tutor that matches your request. Once we have found a qualified tutor for your request, the tutor will reach out to you directly to schedule an appointment.

Accessing Peer Tutoring Remotely

If you schedule an online tutoring appointment in  TutorTrac  for one of your classes, your appointment confirmation will include a link to Zoom. In order to access your appointment, you will need to log into TutorTrac five minutes prior to your appointment. A link will display on the main page for accessing your session.
