Scholarships & Education Loan

You are here, external scholarships, general guidelines.

Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education facilitates the process of scholarships/fellowships offered by the foreign countries under Cultural/Educational Exchange Programmes. Most of the scholarships are for Research, Master’s, and Doctoral studies. The students are required to apply online https://proposal.sakshat.ac.in/scholarship .

On receipt of offer of scholarship by a friendly foreign Government, the same is disseminated on the above portal giving all the details regarding eligibility criteria, value of scholarship, age limit, required qualifications, experience etc. Information is also disseminated through circulars to Institutes/Universities and UGC etc. The subject fields for which the applications are invited, are either provided by the donor country or are chosen keeping in view the national need and facilities available in the donor country.   • Applications from the candidates, who are residing abroad, are not considered.
  • Candidates who have been abroad for study/specialization/training either on scholarship or on their own for a period exceeding six months are eligible to apply only if they have been in India for at least two consecutive years after their return from abroad on a specified date which is mentioned in the public notice for each of the scholarship/fellowship.

NOTE: The Ministry of Education does not administer any scheme under which scholarship/ fellowship/ financial assistance/loan is provided by the Government of India to pursue higher studies abroad.

The scheme Scholarships for Higher Education for Young Achievers Scheme- SHREYAS, has been proposed to implement during the 2021-22 to 2025-26 by placing two ongoing Central Sector schemes for OBC and others namely – (i) National Fellowship for OBC (ii) Dr. Ambedkar Central Sector Scheme of Interest Subsidy on Educational Loans for Overseas Studies for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Economically Backward Classes (EBCs).

Over the past decade, scholarships by the government of India to study abroad have seen a significant surge in the number of students benefiting from them. In FY 2021-22, Rs. 1 crore was allocated for air tickets to scholars awarded the Chinese Government Scholarship. Additionally, the government has established bilateral agreements with countries worldwide, facilitating study-abroad opportunities and educational collaborations and providing valuable resources for Indian students seeking financial assistance for their overseas studies. In this blog, let’s have a look at some of the most popular scholarships.

Fulbright-Nehru Master's Fellowships

The Fulbright-Nehru Master's Fellowships provide exceptional opportunities for outstanding Indian individuals to pursue master's degree programs at select US colleges and universities.  Eligibility Criteria:

  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and motivation.
  • Completed the equivalent of a US bachelor's degree.
  • Possess a minimum of three years of professional work experience.
  • Committed to returning to India and contributing to their communities.

  • Round-trip economy class air travel from the fellow's home city to the US host institution.
  • Funding for tuition, fees, and living expenses.
  • Accident and sickness coverage as per US Government guidelines.

The Ms Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship, fully funded by the Government of India, provides a prestigious opportunity for selected scholars to undertake research at St. Antony College, University of Oxford, London.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Candidates should have a uniform academic record with a minimum of 60% in post-graduation and hold a PhD degree in the chosen subject field.
  • The fellowship is intended for young scholars between the ages of 30 and 40 who have a passion for pursuing an academic career and specialize in the fields of History, Economics, or Political Science.
  • Candidates should have a minimum of three years of teaching experience at the graduate/postgraduate level after completing their PhD.
  • The fellowship is initially tenable for one year, with the possibility of extension for an additional year based on the candidate's performance.
  • The selected fellow will have a status equivalent to that of a Junior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford.
  • The fellowship provides a stipend of £22,063.00, along with travel allowance, college lunches, amounting to a total of £29,944.85.
  • Economy class airfare is provided for the fellow (round trip)

The Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowships for Doctoral Research, administered by United States-India Education Foundation (USIEF), aims to foster long-term capacity building in addressing climate change-related issues in India and the United States.

  • Indian scholars registered for a PhD at an Indian institution are eligible to apply.
  • The fellowship is open to various fields, including but not limited to Energy Studies, Earth Sciences, Geology, Environmental Sciences, Renewable Energy, Smart Cities, Agriculture, Public Policy, Environmental Engineering, and Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
  • Applicants should have a high level of academic achievement, proficiency in English, and research experience in the relevant field.
  • The fellowship duration is six to nine months.
  • Selected scholars will be affiliated with a host institution in the United States.
  • The fellowship provides J-1 visa support, a monthly stipend, round-trip economy class air travel, accident and sickness coverage, applicable allowances, and modest affiliation fees.
  • Scholars have the opportunity to audit non-degree courses, conduct research, and gain practical work experience in suitable settings in the US
  • The grant does not cover allowances for dependents, and the stipend is not sufficient to support family members.

The National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) Scheme for SC (Scheduled Castes) candidates is a central scheme aimed at providing financial assistance to low-income students belonging to various marginalized categories to pursue higher education abroad. Eligibility Criteria:

  • The scholarship is available for students belonging to Scheduled Castes, Denotified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, Landless Agricultural Laborers, and Traditional Artisans.
  • Candidates must have secured a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent grade in their qualifying examination.

The scholarship requires the applicant to be an Indian citizen, to be no older than 45 by June 30, 2024, and to have graduated with a minimum average of 60% in undergraduate or graduate studies from an accredited Indian university.  

A recognized graduate programme (postgraduate in Indian terminology) must be pursued by candidates. Applicants are welcome to reapply if they were not chosen the previous year or were unable to accept the scholarship when they were.  

As long as there is at least one full academic year left to be completed at the time of the scholarship award, candidates who are presently pursuing postgraduate studies abroad may apply after their first year or the start of their second year.  

The JN Tata Endowment for the Higher Education of Indians offers a loan scholarship to Indian students pursuing master's, Ph.D., and postdoctoral studies abroad. This scholarship is granted to individuals aspiring to engage in full-time programs with an awarded amount that ranges from INR 1,00,000 to INR 10,00,000.  

The Tata Trust Scholarship 2024 aims to provide financial support to individuals seeking higher education, whether within India or in another country.  

This scholarship, administered through the JN Tata Endowment, is exclusively merit-based, recognizing and honouring individuals with outstanding abilities to contribute significantly to the country.

Eligibility criteria and application process Applications are open to students at the master's level from around the world. Eligibility requires a bachelor's degree or being in the final year of bachelor studies with graduation before the commencement of the master's program. Demonstrating a level of learning equivalent to a bachelor's degree is also acceptable. Non-European candidates should not have resided in any eligible European nation for more than 12 months in the last 5 years. International students aiming to avail of Erasmus Mundus Scholarships are required to demonstrate English proficiency through exams such as IELTS or TOEFL. Other accepted English tests include Duolingo, PTE, CanTest, etc. In addition to language proficiency, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:  

Previous qualifications and transcripts

A score of 6.5 in IELTS or an equivalent test

Completion of 16 years of education

Students with a lower GPA are also eligible for the scholarship

A statement of purpose

Two letters of recommendation

Residency certificate

An essay detailing the study plan or research project

Applicants can apply to up to three Erasmus scholarship programs, and if rejected in one, they have the option to submit another application. Key features and benefits

4. Lady Meherbai D Tata Education Trust Scholarship

This scholarship program is exclusively based on merit and is designed for women graduates involved in various fields such as social work, social welfare (including child welfare), education, and special education for children, among others. Eligibility criteria and application process  

Indian women aged between 21 and 35 are eligible, provided they hold a first-class degree or its equivalent from a recognized Indian university.  

Additionally, applicants must have secured admission into a reputable foreign university for a postgraduate degree or diploma program.  

The selected candidate is required to furnish a copy of the 'Financial Capacity' document, demonstrating her capability to fund her education.  

Shortlisted candidates will undergo either a personal or online interview with the board of trustees.  

To apply for this scholarship, candidates need to undergo a straightforward application process, which involves submitting necessary documents and completing the application form. Interested individuals can obtain the application form link by sending an email to the scholarship department, specifying details such as the course and specialization they intend to pursue abroad.  

Key features and benefits The scholarship provides a tuition fee component of INR 3,60,000 per chosen candidate, contingent upon the candidate's performance during the interview. Fields of Study and Country Indian women applying for this scholarship should be able to demonstrate a consistently outstanding academic record and must have applied or secured admission to esteemed universities in the United States , UK , or Europe.   

5. Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme

Established by His Highness Aga Khan, the Aga Khan Foundation's International Scholarship Programme (ISP) is designed to assist exceptionally talented students from developing countries who lack alternative means of funding their postgraduate education. Eligibility criteria and application process.  

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree or comparable training/professional experience, as well as outstanding academic records.  

They must demonstrate a multi-source funding plan and true financial necessity. In addition to demonstrating significant leadership potential, professional experience, extracurricular and entrepreneurial accomplishments, and volunteer work, they should be accepted into a recognised postgraduate school.  

Under-30-year-old professionals are given priority.  

Applicants should get in touch with the relevant national organisation to request an application form to be eligible for the scholarship.  

The scholarship covers tuition fees and living expenses for the student but does not include living expenses for family members or the expenses associated with international travel.  

Awards from the AKF ISP are set up as half loans and half grants, with 50% of the total award value being repaid. The term of the degree programme is covered by this Indian government scholarship for study abroad.  

For Ph.D. students, scholarships are granted for the first two years, after which alternative funding sources are expected.  

The five-year repayment period begins six months after graduation, the end of studies, or the removal of support due to the student's inability to satisfy the academic requirements required of ISP students.  

A service charge of 5% per annum is levied on the loan amount, requiring the head of the family or another guarantor to co-sign the loan agreement.  

Fields of Study and Country The program supports individuals in pursuing full-time postgraduate studies at esteemed higher education institutions of their choosing in various countries.  

6. Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships 

Every year, talented students from India can get support to study in the USA through the Fulbright-Nehru Masters Fellowship program. Eligibility criteria and application process.  

For eligibility, graduates, teachers, artists, and professionals can apply. The program has specific minimum requirements based on academic fields.

This scholarship offers Indian students the chance to pursue a master's degree in specific subjects. Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships, lasting six to nine months, are for Indian students already enrolled in a Ph.D. program.  

It was established in 1946 and has provided opportunities to over 400,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists, and scientists to study, teach, and conduct research internationally.  

Fields of Study and Country Fulbright-Nehru Masters Fellowship offers Indian students the chance to pursue a one- or two-year master's degree in the USA in various subjects, including Arts and Culture Management, Economics, and others.  

7. National Overseas Scholarship Scheme

The National Overseas Scholarship under the Central Sector Scheme is designed to help students with low family income from categories like Scheduled Castes, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, Landless Agricultural Laborers, and Traditional Artisans pursue higher education such as master’s or Ph.D. degrees abroad. Eligibility criteria and application process.  

Applicants must be below 35 years old as of April 1, 2022, and the total family income should not exceed 6,00,000 INR.  

To be eligible for the government scholarship for abroad studies, candidates need at least 60% marks or equivalent grades in the qualifying examination. For Ph.D. courses, the qualifying exam is a master’s degree, and for master’s degree courses, it's a bachelor’s degree.  

Only two children from a family can benefit from the National Overseas Scholarship.  

Meeting the minimum score requirements for tests like IELTS, PTE, GMAT, GRE, etc., is necessary.  

For graduation-level courses, the scholarship is not available.  

Interested candidates can apply online through the Ministry's portal: https://nosmsje.gov.in, considering their eligibility and suitability based on the scheme guidelines.  

30% of the awards each year are reserved for women candidates, and if there are not enough eligible women, the slots will be given to suitable male candidates.  

Each financial year, 125 slots are available for this scholarship.

The Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships are Indian Govt scholarships to study abroad, specifically to study in US . It is a joint venture of both nations and strives to promote higher education and leadership.

Eligibility: This scholarship is for outstanding Indian students who are to pursue MS in US universities. The candidate must have completed a bachelor’s degree (minimum marks 55%) equal to a US bachelor degree. The candidate must also have work experience of three or more years. The candidate must not have completed or hold a second degree from the US already.  

Subjects eligible: Arts and Culture Management including Heritage Conservation and Museum Studies, Economics, Environmental Science/Studies, Higher Education Administration, International Affairs, International Legal Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, Public Administration; Public Health, Urban and Regional Planning, and Women’s Studies/Gender Studies. The fellowship is for postgraduate studies only.

Benefits/Value:

J-1 visa support and accident and sickness coverage (partial, terms and conditions apply). Tuition and living costs, etc. with round trip economy class from India to the US

There is no provision to the candidate’s dependent under this fellowship.

Other details:

  •       The candidate can only apply for one Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship in one cycle
  •       She/he cannot apply for the Fulbright-Nehru and Kalam Fellowship together

Eligibility: The candidate should be under 35 years of age. The candidate must recognize as a member of any one of the following: Scheduled Castes (SC)/DE notified Nomadic Tribes, Semi-Nomadic Tribes/Landless Agricultural Laborers/Traditional Artisans. The candidate must have scored 60% or more in their previous degree. The candidate’s annual income must not exceed INR 8 lakh per annum.

Courses eligible: Available for master’s and Ph.D in UK and US.

Benefits: The scholarship covers poll tax, air tickets, incidental journey allowance, equipment allowance, tuition, and visa fees as charged. For the US, a maintenance fee of 15,400 USD and GBP 9,900 is given annually for studying in UK . Contingency allowance is given 1,500 USD or 1,100 GBP as needed for the US or UK respectively.

This scheme is aimed to promote education among the OBCs and the EBCs of India and create awareness about the importance of quality higher education. Note that this is a central sector scheme, but as a loan, not a scholarship.

She/he must have secured admission under the select courses and availed a loan from a bank registered under the IBA. The annual income should be less than 1 lakh INR and 3 lakh INR for EBC and OBC students respectively.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree

The Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship is owned by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and is funded by the Indian government. Being an Indian Govt scholarship to study abroad, this scholarship benefits one fellow and is placed at the University of London.

Eligibility: The student has a uniform academic record of at least 60%, a postgraduate, and a Ph.D. in their subject of interest. The subjects eligible are a few, as mentioned. The candidate must be between the ages of 30 to 40 to avail of the fellowship. A minimum of three years of experience in teaching at the PG or UG level is needed after the candidate completes their Ph.D.

Subjects eligible: Political science, economics, history

Duration: One year at a time, extendable based on the performance

Benefits: The value of the fellowship in 2015 was £ 29,944.85. The fellowship covers travel allowance, lunches, stipend, six high table dinners, and administration charges. Economy air travel is provided under the travel allowance.

Other details: The fellowship does not provide for the dependents of the fellow. Only the travel allowance may be given to the candidate’s spouse if they stay in the UK. The application usually closes in the month of March. The costs and benefits are subject to change with time. The fellowship is given to only ONE candidate per year.

Padho Pardesh: Scheme for the Students Belonging to the Minority Communities

As is understandable from the name itself, Padho Pardesh is a govt of India scholarship for abroad studies that aims to help economically weaker sections of the minority communities of India. It helps candidates get a better education and increase their employability by providing interest subsidies on student loans.

Eligibility: The candidate is to avail a student loan from a bank registered under the IBA. The maximum income of the candidate’s family must not exceed 6 lakh INR per annum. Certain subjects are eligible only.

Courses eligible: Masters, Ph.D., or M.Phil.

Other details: The subsidy will not be granted to students who quit mid-term or are expelled on the grounds of misbehavior. The subsidy will also not tolerate fake documents, violation of rules, etc. 35% seats are reserved for females.
