The modern generation of cricket fans loves the Rohit-like aggression on the field, batsman confronting the bowler, the ensuing battle a treat for the connoisseurs of the game.

Behind the amazing stroke player that he is, Rohit has an enviable humility to his character. Diya, for whom this cricketer from Mumbai is a complete package of what a sports icon should be, says, ‘I can confidently say that I have never seen a man as humble as Rohit. He will talk to you like he has known you for years. He remains grounded no matter what. And I think that is something we don’t see a lot these days. Here is an anecdote that brings out the role model in Rohit. Diya has been fortunate to meet him thrice and had this to share. ‘I first met him back in 2016, as a nervous tenth grader who was about to give her preliminary exams. When I was introduced to him, I was shaking. He noticed that and immediately tried to lighten things up and made me feel extremely comfortable. The second time was just after MI’s 2017 IPL victory and when we met him, coincidentally, the match highlights were going on in that room. He explained the last two overs ball by ball to us and what he was telling the bowlers to do. For a moment it felt like we were a part of the game. In April 2019, I was invited by MI with a few other fans to celebrate his birthday with him and we spent more than an hour together—he cut the cake with us, gave time and spoke to each one of us and even gave “us” presents. Imagine, someone of his stature spending time with his fans on his birthday. He is a gem. Meeting him always feels like meeting a family member, he makes you feel that way.’

It is this aspect of Rohit that endears him to the cricket world. His smile is infectious and brings loads of pleasantness to the dressing room. He steps up to assume all the responsibility associated with a match-winner. Nothing perturbs him because of his self-belief. The greater the challenge, the better is Rohit’s response.

That Rohit is a modest man is well established. He will be the first to acknowledge with a nod a good delivery by the opponent. Misdemeanours have not been a part of his behaviour, whether on or off the field. He loves to compete and seeks to take on the best. This makes him a strong cricketer, and his teammates have benefited from his positive attitude.

There is a firm belief in the Mumbai Indians and Team India dressing room that Rohit is the most calming influence during tough situations. He takes joy in motivating the partner in the middle, often taking on the best bowler of the day, and never shying from shielding his fellow batsman from challenges from the opponents. Throw Rohit a challenge and expect a robust response. Much to the delight of the spectators, this attacking opener often gives them a feast of runs.

Rohit grew up hearing tales of some legendary cricketers, some local heroes, and drew inspiration from the performances of players such as Wasim Jaffer and Amol Muzumdar, who served Mumbai cricket with distinction. The pride of representing Mumbai is not to be missed whenever Rohit turns out for his state. Rohit made a conscious effort not to copy anyone. He was always looking to establish his own identity and he did, emerging as an integral part of Indian team as well.

Rohit is a natural when it comes to taking charge at the crease. Just as a Viv Richards or a Sehwag, if the first ball presented to him a juicy opportunity to play a shot, Rohit does not hesitate. Sehwag’s policy was that the ball was supposed to be hit. Just because a half-volley happens to be the first ball the batsman faces does not necessarily evoke a defensive shot. Rohit has always looked forward to establishing early dominance.

Manoj Prabhakar, a cricketer who worked hard on his batting, advocated a positive approach whatever be the challenge. He says, ‘You don’t gain by falling on defence just because the challenge is huge. I learnt early in my career never to discard my natural game. Sometimes it cost me my wicket. I am glad Rohit has not compromised with the task given to him. He is your best batsman after Kohli and must be given the freedom to pursue his natural flair. We have seen many times how Rohit walks in and takes charge in no time. That comes from his penchant to dominate.’

While he definitely wants to score tons of runs and win matches for his side but not like the way a Babar Azam, a Virat Kohli, a Steve Smith or a Kane Williamson does. He instead, wants to dominate the bowling like Rohit Sharma. Haider Ali, who earned his maiden call-up for the England tour, on Thursday said India swashbuckling opener India opener Rohit Sharma is his role model because he finishes off the game and he is a real match-winner.

“As far as role models are concerned, mine is Rohit Sharma. I really like him as a player, and want to give the side an aggressive start at the top, and hit the ball cleanly like him,” Haider said in a video press conference.

Ali has played for the Pakistan U19 team and had an outstanding 2019-20 season, following which he earned an emerging contract for the 2020-21 season.

He had a major role to play in Pakistan’s run to the semi-final of the U19 World Cup in 2020. He was the Pakistan’s second most successful batsman with 317 runs against South Africa U19 in June.

Haider’s real claim to fame was however, the PSL season that followed this year’s U19 World Cup.He scored 239 runs in nine matches at a strike-rate of over 158 for Peshawar Zalmi in the unfinished Pakistan Super League 2020. Haider’s ability to score freely earned praise form all quarters and former Pakistan batsman Rameez Raja even compared him with the likes of Virat Kohli and Babar Azam.

Haider, however continues to be in awe of India limited-overs vice captain Rohit Sharma.

“He is a man for all three formats, and he can adapt his game to all three formats. And the thing I like best is when he crosses 50, he moves on to a 100, and then he’s thinking of 150, and even 200. That’s what I want to do: to think about getting big scores, and when I get there, aim for even bigger ones. He finishes the game off for his side, and is a real match-winner,” he added.

This is not the first time Haider has expressed his thoughts of wanting to bat like Rohit Sharma. In March, he had said he idolises Rohit and wants to bat like him.

“My idol is Rohit Sharma. The best thing about him is his strike rate and I want that in my game,” said the 19-year-old Haider Ali in a video with Cricket Pakistan.

Rohit was named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year and is the first batsman to score four T20I centuries and is the first player to have twin centuries in his maiden appearance as a Test opener.

Haider has scored 645 runs in 7 first-class matches at an impressive average of 49.61. He further talked about his early cricketing days and went on to express his desire to play for Pakistan in all three formats.

“I started my cricket in Attock as a tape-ball player in 2015. In 2016, I began to play hard ball and play for the Under-16 side and then Under-19. In my family, my cousin is the only one who played cricket, and no one else. Watching him, I began to get interested in the sport,” Haider said.

“My aim was to represent Pakistan. My aim is to play all three formats, and my preparation for all three formats is great. Recently in the domestic first-class competition, I did well, and before that there was the U-19 World Cup. I then played the PSL, so I’ve had practice in all three formats. As soon as I get the chance, I’ll give my best,” he added.

Pakistan will play three Tests and as many T20Is against England in bio-secure environment commencing from July 3.

Haider Ali: Rohit Sharma is my 'role model'

Pakistan may currently be coached by two of their most famous batsmen, but for inspiration, the newest member of their squad is looking slightly east. The Attock-born Haider Ali , who rose to national prominence after scoring a half-century for Pakistan in an otherwise painfully one-sided defeat to India in the Under-19 World Cup semi-final earlier this year, views India's Rohit Sharma as his main inspiration.

"As far as role models are concerned, mine is Rohit Sharma," Haider said in a video press conference. "I really like him as a player, and want to give the side an aggressive start at the top, and hit the ball cleanly like him. He is a man for all three formats, and he can adapt his game to all three formats. And the thing I like best is when he crosses 50, he moves on to a 100, and then he's thinking of 150, and even 200. That's what I want to do: to think about getting big scores, and when I get there, aim for even bigger ones. He finishes the game off for his side, and is a real match-winner."

Haider emerged as one of Pakistan's most promising young batsmen by excelling in all three formats over the past few months. Having only made his first-class debut in September last year, the 19-year-old had a splendid opening season which culminated in a second-innings 134 for the unfancied Northern side in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final . It was his second hundred of the season, in addition to three half-centuries as he finished with an average a shade below 50.

At the Under-19 World Cup, his performances caught the eye of Ian Bishop, who said he reminded him of Babar Azam. Haider would soon earn a contract with Peshawar Zalmi at the Pakistan Super League, where his meteoric rise continued, his reputation enhanced by a string of steady scores at the blistering strike rate of nearly 160. Only five Pakistan batsmen scored more runs than his 239, and just two - Shadab Khan and Kamran Akmal - could boast a superior strike rate. Having shown form like this across formats, Haider wants to be a part of the Pakistan side in all three forms.

"I always wanted to play under the coaching of Younis Khan, and I'm glad I will get the opportunity this time. I want to learn as much as possible from this tour and ask lots of questions of both Younis and Misbah [-ul-Haq]. I want to learn how to play all three formats and what mindset to approach all three formats with. I'm very excited about how much I can grow over these next three months.

"When I moved up from U-19 to the PSL, the coaches, Shoaib Malik, and Kamran Akmal gave me plenty of inspiration. They said it is essentially the same cricket, nothing too difficult. The coaches told me not to be scared, and to make the best use of my talents. And so I played my natural game and thankfully the performances followed. Even on the England tour, we have legends for coaches and I look forward to following their advice, and hopefully it works out for me."

That Haider made his preference for a top-order role evident may put some additional pressure on Fakhar Zaman, who currently occupies that slot in the Pakistan T20I side alongside Babar Azam. Zaman has struggled for consistency over the past two years and has held onto that opening slot for lack of an appropriate replacement more than anything else. Haider, however, insisted that he was happy to fill in wherever given the chance for now.

"The fans and crowd can't be there, so we have to cope with the conditions. Where I bat is up to our management. My role is to give my best where I am assigned to bat. Some players can play in the top order and struggle lower down. At club level, I can play both up or down the order. I'd like to bat higher up, but retain the flexibility to do a job where I'm required. I'm very excited. For England, my personal prep is complete. Whenever I get the chance, I'll give my best and hopefully make a contribution to the team."

He also reflected on the third anniversary of Pakistan's victory over India in the 2017 Champions Trophy final , saying it birthed in him a desire to be a part of the Pakistan side and enjoy its highs. "I wanted to represent Pakistan at that moment. It was an unbelievable feeling. When we play against India, it is very crucial, and the fact Pakistan won in such a one-sided match was a very unbelievable feeling."

Last year, after Pakistan limped to an 89-run defeat against India at the World Cup in England, Sharma, who had scored a century, was asked what tips he had for Pakistan's batsmen. "If one day I become coach of Pakistan, I'll tell them," he had replied. "What shall I tell them right now?"

Whatever he has to say, there's at least one player in Pakistan's side who'll listen with rapt attention.

Traditionally, Pakistan has been known to produce top-class fast bowlers. While their current crop also contains some exciting talents in the form of Naseem Shah, Shaheen Afridi and Musa Khan, a teenage batsman who is also getting a lot of attention is Haider Ali. Having recently been named in the 29-man Pakistan squad for the England tour, Haider has picked India's limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma as his role model.

Haider has been making the right noises in the Pakistan cricketing spectrum for months now. Recently, he was also awarded an emerging contract as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the list of the centrally contacted batsman for the 2020-21 season.

Haider had also done wonders for Pakistan in the ACC Emerging Teams Cup in 2019. Having earned his maiden senior national team call-up, Haider is now keen to emulate India's Hitman.

"As far as role models are concerned, mine is Rohit Sharma," 19-year-old Haider said in a video press conference.

Speaking of Rohit, the Pakistan teenage batsman pointed out that the way Rohit adapts his game based on the format he is playing, is what has impressed him a lot. Furthermore, the veteran Indian batsman's approach in registering big scores is something that he himself wants to adopt.

Clarity of thought and role is cornerstone of Rohit Sharma's leadership

Sharma led Team India from ball one

Rohit Sharma scored five centuries in the 2019 World Cup in England. If he wanted, he could arguably have scored as many this time, too.

But this was a different Rohit Sharma; this time, he was captain, and he had assigned himself a role. He would take down the bowlers in the opening passage of play, throwing them off the line and length, and set the stage for Virat Kohli to be the fulcrum of the innings with others playing around him.

In the first powerplay, he scored 401 runs in 297 balls, hitting 46 fours and 24 sixes at a strike rate of 135.01. The next best strike rate came from Australia’s Travis Head, who made 128 in the first powerplay at 121.90.

It was a fearless approach that took the pitch out of the equation and drove oppositions on to the back foot. It was like Sharma had moulded the team in his own image, a process that he and head coach Rahul Dravid had been working on for some time now, especially with fans and experts calling out India’s timidness with the bat on big occasions. Even in the final against Australia, Sharma made 47 off 31, striking at 151.61. It was almost as if India were starting with a cheat code every game.

“The way Rahul bhai played his cricket and how I am playing these days, it’s quite a contrast,” Sharma said in the news conference before the final, a slight smile on his face. “For him to agree and give me that freedom to let us play the way we want to play says a lot about him.”

But it was not all ‘see ball, hit ball’. In a low-scoring match against England, where India made 229, Sharma adapted to the situation and scored a 101-ball 87. He is used to this adaptability, having been India’s best Test batter in the past three years.

While Kohli won player of the tournament for his 765 runs―the most in any World Cup―Sharma had as much an impact on the team’s success, if not more. With Kohli, the story seemed to be that of a national hero who had slain past demons and had emerged refreshed and hungry to reclaim his throne as his generation’s best in the format. He was a figure to be celebrated, to be taken in as one would Sachin Tendulkar during his later days at the crease.

Not that Kohli was not putting team over self, but his legend had grown to such a degree that he was seen as competing with his idol, whose record of 49 ODI centuries he did break.

With Sharma, though, it was about doing whatever he could, as batter, as captain, to place India on top and finally, after a decade, lift a trophy to end India’s drought at ICC events. The last time India won an ODI World Cup, in 2011, Sharma was not in the squad. It was a tough time for him personally, and winning this time would have been a personal as much as a professional goal.

“I want to highlight three things about his captaincy,” Mumbai Ranji legend Amol Muzumdar said in a Star Sports show. “The first one is, Rohit Sharma gives a lot of weightage and importance to data and statistics. This includes one of the most important parts of his planning; he believes that it is very important to know each and every minute detail and statistic of all the opposition players. The second, he keeps things very simple and tries to make his team members think simple. He keeps everyone in the team in a very cool and calm atmosphere.”

Clarity of thought and role is a cornerstone of Sharma’s leadership. It was a hallmark of former captain M.S. Dhoni, too. While the Chennai Super Kings skipper made champions out of unheralded players, Sharma, as Mumbai Indians captain, nurtured youngsters like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah into becoming national mainstays. No wonder they are the two most successful IPL captains. “[Sharma’s] style of captaincy is a bit different from others; he talks very politely and in a very lovable way with his players, thus keeping things easy and simple,” said Muzumdar. “And, third, which is the most important point, is that he has that magical touch in him.”

Sharma is particularly popular with the younger lot, going out for dinner with them and dancing with them on Reels. “On the field, he is instinctive and always open to ideas; off the field, it’s great to have him around―his sense of humour and one-liners are amazing,” Suryakumar Yadav, who has played under Sharma at Mumbai Indians for several years, said in a recent interview. Yadav’s own role in the team was to finish off the game like he is used to doing in T20s. Mohammed Siraj would attack with the new ball, Ravindra Jadeja would tighten the screws in the middle overs and so on with each player.

One of the more obvious interventions of the captain during play is when he decides whether to take a review or not. With this process, Sharma chose to rely on the pragmatic K.L. Rahul behind the stumps than his, at times, overenthusiastic bowlers.

He might have missed a trick in the final by not giving the new ball to Siraj, but he had been good with his bowler rotations throughout the tournament.

Talking about Sharma’s captaincy in the match against England, former English pacer Steve Harmison said, “Once they made the initial breakthrough, you could have got the spinners in early. He has only got five bowlers to go with. So, he is not thinking 40 to 50 overs. Rohit Sharma was thinking of bowling England out in 35 to 40 overs. So, he didn't go to his spin bowlers and went back to his seam bowlers.”

To be fair, though, Sharma had a lineup of bowlers in red-hot form who could be called upon whenever needed and would, on most days, deliver.

But what was perhaps one of the most impressive parts of his leadership was how the team kept its record clean even in the absence of Pandya. The all-rounder was in the side to provide flexibility with bat and ball, but an injury forced him out. The side’s balance was thrown off, and India had to reshuffle its plans.

The final against Australia, perhaps, was the one time the lack of Pandya was felt, but the former five-time champions played such a perfect match that maybe even Pandya or Ashwin would not have helped.

Young Pakistan batting star Haider Ali on Thursday said that India opener Rohit Sharma is his role model and he wants to emulate the Mumbai batsman as an opener.

Haider Ali was rewarded for his stupendous recent form with a maiden international call-up for Pakistan's 'bio-secure' tour of England in August-September.

Haider had an outstanding 2019-20 season, following which he earned an emerging contract for the 2020-21 season. He was Pakistan U19's second most successful batsman with 317 runs against South Africa U19 in June, fifth leading run-getter in the ACC Emerging Teams Cup in Bangladesh.

"As far as role models are concerned, mine is Rohit Sharma," 19-year-old Haider Ali said in a video press conference.

Rohit burst on the scene in 2007, but it was only in 2013 that he was promoted to the opening slot in limited overs. It proved to be a masterstroke as runs flowed almost at will from his bat.

Rohit Sharma went onto slam as many as 3 double tons including the highest individual ODI score. A record that stands to this day. In 2019 he got the top slot in Tests and scored hundreds almost at will.

"I really like him as a player, and want to give the side an aggressive start at the top, and hit the ball cleanly like him. He is a man for all three formats, and he can adapt his game to all three formats. And the thing I like best is when he crosses 50, he moves on to a 100, and then he's thinking of 150, and even 200. That's what I want to do: to think about getting big scores, and when I get there, aim for even bigger ones. He finishes the game off for his side, and is a real match-winner." The praise comes even though bitter rivals India and Pakistan seldom play each other, and as political tensions remain high over Kashmir.

Pakistan's new batting star Haider Ali said that Indian cricketing great Rohit Sharma is his role model.

"Rohit Sharma is my role model because of the way he gives the Indian team a start. It's amazing," the 19-year-old Haider told reporters.

"Whether it's a Test, one-day international or a Twenty20, he comes with a thinking and takes the attack to the bowlers. I want to give the same start to the Pakistan team."

Haider broke into Pakistan's 29-member squad for the forthcoming England tour following several notable performances -- including a losing half-century against India in the semi-final of the ICC Junior World Cup in South Africa earlier this year.

Matches between India and Pakistan stalled in the wake of the 2008 terror attack in Mumbai, although the old foes face off occasionally in multinational events.

India's Rohit has soared in recent years, having hit three double-hundreds in one-day internationals, including a world record 264.

He also holds the record for hitting the most sixes in Twenty20 internationals -- a staggering 127. 

Still, Haider's cross-border compliment is not unprecedented. 

Indian skipper Virat Kohli often praises Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir, while Pakistan batsman Babar Azam is well-liked in India.

Haider said he admired Rohit's consistent, aggressive style.

"Once he reaches 50 he thinks for 100, and on 100 he thinks of 150," the youngster said.

Pakistan are scheduled to head to Britain next week to spend 14 days in quarantine before playing the first Test in Manchester from August 5.
