Stream It Or Skip It: ‘The Greatest Hits’ on Hulu, a High-Concept Sci-fi Romance Starring Lucy Boynton as a Very Sad Time Traveler

Stream it or skip it: 'love, divided' on netflix, a sweet fantasy romance that seems to ask the question "what if amélie was a contestant on 'love is blind'", ‘the greatest hits’ ending explained: what is the missing song, when will 'the greatest hits' movie be on hulu how to stream the lucy boynton movie.

It’s tempting to call Netflix’s Through My Window a YA adaptation, but this Spanish teen romance features enough WHOA NELLY to put it firmly in the A camp. The movie’s based on a steamy Spanish-language novel by Ariana Godoy, a Venezuela-via-North Carolina romance writer who appears to be chasing the money that lies in the demographic nether between Fifty Shades and The Fault in Our Stars . The movie has plenty of OOMPH, if you know what I mean, but does it have enough of anything else to make it stand out among other young-love dramedies of its ilk? Let’s find out.

THROUGH MY WINDOW : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Raquel (Clara Galle) is a senior in high school with a knack for writing, but she lacks the confidence to let anyone read it. This is an important detail, because it renders her something more than just an empty head hovering over a roiling pot of hormones that boils for the slab of meat who lives next door: Ares (Julio Pena), as in the God of War, a real son of the rich who lives in a mansion and works out like mad and apparently walks around with his butt out often enough to merit us seeing it in the film’s opening moments. IF ONLY RAQUEL COULD SEE THAT BUTT. She sees everything else, stalking his Insta and such and saving all the photos on her hard drive, and staring at him from under the bleachers as he does shirtless workouts at futbol practice, and following him to the cemetery on a rainy day. Real healthy obsession you got there, Raquel. Might wanna see someone about that.

But guess what? He knows. Ares is well aware that she lusts after him like a horndog to another dog. There’s a convoluted contrivance where he steals her wifi and they have a heated exchange, and then he confronts her after the cemetery stalkery. It’s worth noting that Ares has rammed (get it?) many ewes in his short existence, and his brothers Apolo (Hugo Arbues) and Artemis (Eric Masip) – somebody stop their parents from having another boy and naming him Argo – and their family handler Sofia (Rachel Lascar) enable his womanizing. So he sees Raquel as another conquest, and cruelly/teasingly calls her “witch.” All is fair in war and love, y’know.

So Ares teases bookish Raquel until her inner Aphrodite emerges, then leaves her dangling. But she’s no mouse in the library. She stands up for herself until he puts his mouth on her and then she puddles on the floor right there in front of us. Then she reciprocates the tease and, before you know it, smash-o-rama, right there on his pool table. Raquel has a couple of friends, Daniela (Natalia Azahara), a party-hardy type, and Yoshi (Guillermo Lasheras), a lanky fella who wishes their friendship wasn’t so damn platonic. Soon enough, it may come to pass that the god walking here on the earth might have actual feelings, and the quiet writer girl may have enough substance within her to inspire him to share them. But as the wise man once said, IF ONLY IT WERE SO SIMPLE.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: For a minute, the interactions between Ares and Raquel are so creepy and contentious, one wonders if this is a riff on the ol’ I-was-engaged-to-a-serial-killer plot, or if Ares is secretly a Twilight vampire or some such ancient immortal being. But what it boils down to is a generic Nicolas Sparks romance, albeit angst-ridden like Bella ‘n’ Edward were, and with HEAPS and HEAPS of rutting in it, like Christian and Anastasia, sans the ballgags and such.

Performance Worth Watching: Getting some Dakota Johnson she’s-more-capable-than-the-material vibes from Clara Galle, who brings to mind Evan Rachel Wood’s earnest tones, and probably deserves a movie of greater import.

Memorable Dialogue: Raquel, writing of her experiences with Ares: “We were told that love smells like roses. Truth is, it smells like chlorine.” (Trust me, it almost makes sense when taken in context.)

Sex and Skin: Oh golly. Raquel and Ares get topless and bottomless (but not quite frontal) as they do it hither and yon and up there and way up there and in a bathroom stall (gross!) and, and, and. Rabbits probably do it less than these two. Hey, good for them, here’s hoping they stay properly hydrated.

Our Take: Through My Window sucks in the way teenagers generally suck, since they haven’t figured out diddly-squat and are self-obsessed, inarticulate i the ways of the heart and mired in banal angst. Which isn’t to say there’s much in the way of realism in Raquel and Ares’ stormy relationship, because they soon find themselves in a plot that contrives a laughable high-drama tragedy that puts everything into proper context deep in the third act, rendering their past interpersonal malfeasances and various immaturities utterly moot. So perhaps this story is a paean to young love and lust, although I suspect, despite the seriously non-campy nature in which this material is presented, nobody will really take it seriously. I roll my eyes in its general direction.

But, you may ask, is it HAWT? There’s no denying the two leads are attractive, but they’re either stuck in the muck of this uninspired material, or lack the chemistry to elevate it. I never really felt a surge of empathy or concern for their pining, for Ares’ parental woes tied to rich-people-family expectations (hey guess what, they own a gigantic corporation), for Raquel’s inability to let other people read what she writes (really, who cares?), or for whatever else they have going on, which, frankly, in this thin screenplay, is not much at all. There’s enough absentee parenting of the type that’s convenient for teenagers to find plenty of time to stick their faces and junk in each other’s places, and then at the end, a sequence set at prom, ugh, just ugh. The film plays all of this straight and seems uninterested in inspiring even a single laugh, intentionally or otherwise. Bottom line, it’s at best vaguely romantic, and no fun on any level.

Our Call: DEFENESTRATED! SKIP IT.

Eclectic Pop

Is 'through my window' a netflix movie worth climbing into.

One day, in a cringey reveal that would leave any ordinary person in the fetal position from embarrassment, Ares discloses that he has hacked Raquel’s WiFi and her computer. He has found tons of pictures of and writings about himself on the latter. Oh, and Ares makes it known that he is aware Raquel follows him around all of the time, branding her a stalker.

Instead of crumbling, Raquel is defiant, and “Through My Window” subsequently sees the pair get embroiled in a strange and high-charged tet-a-te. The aspect giving “Through My Window” an edge over its genre counterparts is that it approaches its romance from a weird angle. Raquel seems to have an unrequited fan-ish type infatuation with Ares that he exploits and curiously enjoys.

In an almost teenage Christian Grey sort of way , Ares lets his emotions towards Raquel run hot and cold. There is something sinister in his actions that “Through My Window” ignores in favor of a broody rebel without a cause diagnosis. His behavior is cruel and calculating, and his arrogance constantly sees him ignore the word, “no.” As much as Raquel says it, Ares disobeys it.

For Raquel, realizing that she has his attention makes her work even harder to focus on captivating Ares and convincing him to give a relationship with her a real chance. Raquel has her work cut out for her, though. The emotionally shallow Ares is going to be tough to convince. After all, he truly believes he is a god among boys. You can forget finding the humility of Peter of “To All The Boys” fame .

In contrast to that rom-com, “Through My Window” feels like Spain’s answer to the “After” film series, based on yours truly’s limited knowledge of that popularly adapted work. What draws you into Spain’s version is the suspense and the question of how you, as a viewer, want Ares and Raquel’s relationship to end. To be quite honest, this struggling romantic watched, not wanting Raquel and Ares’ twisted relationship to succeed.

In fact, I kept hoping they would break up and stay that way. Instead, their seemingly unbreakable connection is charged by incessant lust, an ingredient even “Fifty Shades” admits having limits as long-term relationship fuel. Add to that, there are so many creepy moments between Ares and Raquel. (The scene returning from the nightclub with Raquel, Ares, and his brother is bizarre at best.)

The bright side of all of this is that “Through My Window” does make for a classically engaging Spanish movie, of which there are many. Let’s close by stating the obvious if you have followed this site for a long time. I absolutely love Spanish cinema , and “Through My Window” is a prime example of why.

Theirs is a craft that is always edgy, passionate, thought-provoking , and consistently nuanced. Spain is a step beyond the rest for thrillers , and it is currently shoring up its romances with some daring entries. Thanks to Netflix , prospective viewers are getting to take a peek at movies and TV they would have sadly lived without. “Through My Window” is among those that are worth climbing to your seat to watch.

Through My Window: Looking at You (2024) Movie Review & Ending Explained: Why Did Anna Spike Raquel’s Drink?

Based on Ariana Godoy’s teenage romance novel of the same name, Netflix’s “Through My Window” movie series released its third installment this weekend, completing the trilogy and probably resting at that. On the off-chance you liked its predecessors, it is likely that “Through My Window: Looking at You” would work for you. It does provide a satisfactory conclusion. Nevertheless, “Looking at You,” directed by Marcal Fores with a screenplay by Eduard Sola, is stale and drab. Just like its predecessors.

Through My Window: Looking at You (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis

Almost a year has passed since the events of “Through My Window: Across the Sea.” In case you have forgotten, the trilogy’s second film ended with the death of one of the key characters. Yoshi (Guillermo Lasheras). The story of “Through My Window” chronicles the romance between Raquel (Clara Galle) and Ares (Julio Pena). But Yoshi always hovered over them, as someone who was always there for Raquel when nobody else was. Raquel never looked at Yoshi in a “more than a friend” role, but Yoshi did.

The motorcycle accident that led to Yoshi falling from the cliff scarred Raquel and her relationship with Ares. The third (and probably last) part of this series, “Looking at You,” refers to Yoshi looking at Raquel from the afterlife. “Looking at You” starts with Ares and Raquel trying to settle into their respective relationships. Raquel with Gregory (Ivan Lapadula), and Ares with Vera (Andrea Chaparro). Both Gregory and Vera appeared in the last film and were shown as potential love interests for Raquel and Ares. So, this is not surprising.

It is around Christmas, and Raquel’s book is going to be a best-seller. She is adored by her current boyfriend, Gregory. Her mother seems to have found love, too. So, it is obvious she is not happy. Because she is not complete without Ares. That is what “Through My Window” has us believe through and through. Ares does come back, flanked by Vera. And the inevitable happens. Gregory’s heart gets broken as Raquel cannot help but go back to Ares.

High On Films in collaboration with Avanté

However, things are not easy for Ares. His family, the aristocratic Hidalgo family, could lose their corporate empire. And it is the relationship of Ares and Vera that is saving the company. As Ares’ older brother, Artemis (Eric Masip), points out, a deal with Vera’s parents’ company is the only way forward for the Hidalgo empire. So, Ares cannot simply break the relationship with Vera. Even though Vera is also having trouble getting over her previous relationship.

Through My Window: Looking at You (2024) Movie Review

As a critic, the cardinal rule I set for myself is never to use the word ‘boring’ to describe a movie. It reeks of a serious lack of effort. But, sometimes, a film/series comes up that embodies the meaning of the word so much that one cannot help but use ‘boring’ as an adjective, as that is the most fitting. Netflix’s erotic rom-com movie franchise “Through My Window” has established itself as one of the perfect candidates for that ‘boring’ title. This franchise makes us thankful for the existence of the fast-forward button.

Just like its predecessors, Clara Galle is earnest in her portrayal of Raquel. She is the lone bright star in this otherwise insipid affair. And this is saying something, as “Through My Window” is filled with teenage angst, beautiful people embarking on sexual adventures and shocking deaths. However, these just exist and do not become anything in this weirdly ‘boring’ (sorry for the repetition) love story. Even the holiday cheers in the background of the story cannot elevate it.

Through My Window: Looking at You (2024)

I suppose “Looking at You,” as the third (and probably concluding) part of the series, does its job well to wrap up everything neatly. It also delves a little more into certain subplots, which are mildly intriguing. It’s definitely less trite than the central love story of Ares and Raquel. Chances are that if you were mildly intrigued to know how this story ends, you would not mind “Looking at You.” It is the best of the bunch. For anyone who has not yet started on this “Through My Window” adventure, you are warned.

Through My Window: Looking At You (2024) Movie Ending Explained:

Did anna want to kill raquel.

Apart from Vera and Gregory, “Looking at You” brings one more ‘Across the Sea’ character back. It is Anna (Carla Tous). Anna is Gregory’s sister and someone who loved Yoshi. When Yoshi was riding his motorbike, he was rushing to meet Anna in the lighthouse. Anna blamed Raquel, who had once again broken Yoshi’s heart before Yoshi’s fateful journey. Anna believed Raquel’s confused feelings for Yoshi were the key reason behind Yoshi’s sadness and his eventual death.

In  “Looking at You,” Anna warns Gregory that Raquel will break his heart, too, as she is still in love with Ares. This happens, but Anna actually sort of becomes friends with Raquel. So much so that Raquel invites her to Raquel’s publishing house’s New Year party. Meanwhile, Ares leaves an important dinner with his family and Vera’s family. He texts Raquel and asks her to come to the cemetery, their favorite spot.

However, Raquel is drunk at that party, and Anna sees Ares’ message. Seeing this, Anna puts some medicinal tablets on Raquel’s drink. Wanting to sabotage her relationship with Ares. She has tried to do the same when she visited Raquel’s store. It is understandable why Anna would do this. Yoshi seemed to be Anna’s true love, the only guy who made Anna come out of her shell. She does not want Raquel, the person whom Anna blames for her true love’s demise, to walk away with her true love. However, it is likely that Anna just wanted Raquel to pass out, so she missed her chance to meet with Ares. She did not anticipate it could lead to Raquel and Ares ending up in the hospital beds.

Are Ares and Raquel Together?

When Raquel does not appear in the cemetery, Ares decides to go back to Vera and not ruin the only chance the Hidalgo company has. But when he learns that Raquel has not come back from the party in the morning, he calls her. Raquel, just coming around, could not talk. This worries Ares, and he rushes to the place of the party. A disheveled and drugged Raquel falls into the pool and almost drowns to death. Ares makes the timely intervention and saves her. They are reunited at the hospital, and everything wraps up neatly. Ares breaks off with Vera, but the fortunes of the Hidalgo family do not worsen. Vera’s parents do not back out of the deal. We see Raquel and Ares surrounded by the Hidalgo family. Five years pass, and Ares and Raquel are happily together.

What Happens to Apolo and Daniela? And to Artemis and Claudia?

“Looking at You” has two subplots involving the other two Hidalgo brothers. And frankly, they are better than the central one. Artemis, who falls in love with the family servant, Claudia (Emilia Lazo), tries his best to continue his journey into fatherhood without trying to break off from his family. Claudia gives birth to a baby girl. In the end, Claudia is shown to be fully accepted by Artemis’ parents.

As for Apolo (Hugo Arbues), he tries to match his girlfriend, Daniela’s openness (Natalia Azahara) when it comes to sexual adventures. Apolo is shown to be bi-sexual, as Daniela is. He gets into a relationship with a handsome hunk but gets his heart broken. In the end, he finds solace in Daniela’s arms. Daniela also starts to value Apolo more.

Through My Window 3: Looking At You Review – A predictable end to a silly love story

Through My Window 3: Looking At You Review

Through My Window 3: Looking At You – which, I think we can all agree, doesn’t even sound like a real title – is one of those movies that you can predict in its entirety just by looking at the premise. It doesn’t help that it’s the third in a trilogy, all three of which have come out in less than a year on Netflix , presenting one of the silliest and least interesting on-screen romances in quite some time as a single elongated narrative that ultimately goes nowhere you didn’t expect it to five minutes into the first movie.

Through My Window 3: Looking At You review and plot summary

This is the grand culmination of the overly sexualized and slightly creepy love story of Raquel and Ares, two nonentities who communicate almost entirely through Wi-Fi passwords and break-ins. Their relationship has been through a lot in the last two movies, coming to an end following the death of Raquel’s friend Yoshi, who is constantly namedropped in Looking At You to the extent he feels like a ghost haunting the screenplay.

Following the ending of Through My Window 2: Across the Sea , Ares and Raquel aren’t together. They’re cracking on with other people. Raquel is with Gregory and Ares is with Vera, though neither is thrilled about their respective partnerships, which rapidly becomes clear when Ares comes home for the holidays.

Looking At You is, weirdly, a Christmas film. It takes place over the holiday season and has some of the usual festive beats you’d expect on top of all the typical romantic tropes, so it’s cliched in an almost fractal way. It certainly lacks the good cheer of most Christmas movies, though, feeling intensely grim and serious throughout. There’s a joke here and there, but most of the ways in which this is hilarious are unintentional.

For instance, Raquel keeps a photograph of her and Ares right below a photograph of her and Gregory. She journals her love for him – it’s in the guise of a novel, but I honestly can’t see how it isn’t just a diary – openly and leaves her laptop lying around so that Gregory can stumble on her innermost desires. There’s a suggestion she does this intentionally to bring about a more rapid end to her sham relationship, but I don’t think she does; I think she’s just a character in a movie whose every action is designed for the sake of cheap drama.

Through My Window 3 is that kind of movie, with those kinds of characters. You can see the seams all the time, as the script awkwardly navigates to the next sex scene – mercifully done with relatively decent taste here – or quasi-dramatic moment, most of which are signposted a mile off. There’s never any real doubt about what the ending will be, and the same can be said for the various subplots involving Ares’s relatives.

Nobody Cares

Through My Window 3 is also another kind of movie – critic-proof. People love them, and those who enjoyed the first two will doubtlessly feel the same about this one. The climactic installment exists for the benefit of those people and not to please folks like me, whose literal job is to be critical about the process and pick holes in the experience.

I could do that a lot more here, but really, what’s the point? Looking At You isn’t a good movie by any traditional metric. It’s full of contrivance, it’s overly predictable, the characters and plot are uninteresting, and there are pretty worthwhile questions that should probably be asked about the romanticization of a rich dude hopping through someone’s window as a symbol of passion and romance. But nobody cares about any of this and if I wasn’t being paid to I don’t think I would either.

Through my window 3: looking at you ending explained.

Through My Window 3: Looking at You wraps up the trilogy of romance movies nicely, delivering a satisfying ending to Ares and Raquel's relationship.

  • Ares and Raquel finally end up together, moving in together five years later with help from their friends.
  • Anna poisons Raquel due to jealousy and misplaced blame, but ultimately apologizes and is forgiven.
  • Raquel pays tribute to Yoshi by leaving a copy of her book at the site of his crash, dedicating her success to him.

Raquel (Clara Galle) and Ares (Julio Peña) had a rocky on-again, off-again relationship, but they got a happy ending in Through My Window 3: Looking at You . Ares and Raquel have been the main couple of the entire trilogy, experiencing steamy romance and crushing breakups throughout. Looking at You is the final installment of the Netflix original trilogy, so they had to make a final decision about their relationship, one way or another.

As the final chapter and one of the best movies in the Through My Window trilogy , Looking at You had a lot of story lines left to wrap up. After Through My Window: Across the Sea 's ending and Yoshi's tragic death, everyone's life had taken a turn for the worse . Raquel and Ares were in new relationships, though neither compared to the love they once shared, and the rest of the cast of Through My Window: Looking at You were experiencing their own problems. Luckily, everything was able to come together in time for a happy ending to the trilogy.

15 Best Romance Movies On Netflix Right Now

Ares and raquel end up together, they move in together five years later.

After Ares gets out of the hospital and Raquel speaks at her book signing event, the movie jumps forward five years. It shows Ares and Raquel moving into an apartment together, with the help of Artemis and Apolo, as well as Artemis and Claudia's daughter, Hera. Their new apartment shows that Ares and Raquel finally end up together , and they won't have to look through the window to see each other anymore. In a bit of poetic writing, the trilogy ended the same way it began, with Raquel's Wi-Fi. While Looking at You had a decidedly happy ending, the road there was very dark and dangerous.

Through My Window 3: Looking at You is available to stream on Netflix.

Why Did Anna Spike Raquel's Drink?

Anna blamed raquel for yoshi's death.

Yoshi's death had a lasting impact on the entire trilogy, but it probably affected Anna most of all. She had been intimate with Yoshi in Across the Sea , and in Looking at You , she was on anti-depressants. Those anti-depressants had a massive role in the movie, as Anna used them to spike Raquel's drink . Gregory had warned her against drinking while taking the medication earlier in the film, so Anna knew that she could have killed Raquel with them. Anna immediately regretted her actions, but Raquel still drank the pills while she was already drunk from the publisher's party.

Anna had several reasons for poisoning Anna, even though she had second thoughts after the fact. In Across the Sea , Yoshi reveals that he had an unrequited love for Raquel, which caused him to refuse Anna's sexual advances. Anna was jealous of her, but she also thought Raquel was responsible for Yoshi's death, so Anna wanted her to pay for it . On top of that, Anna thought Raquel's relationship with Ares was hurting everyone around her, so she had even more reason to be angry with her. Anna ended up apologizing to Raquel, who forgave her surprisingly easily.

Why Did Ares Almost Die While Saving Raquel?

He had a deadly chlorine allergy.

After Raquel didn't meet him at the cemetery like he asked, he figured he had missed her chance to be with her and decided to get on the plane with Vera. However, he realized the true reason for her absence after calling her and hearing her labored breathing. When Ares arrived at the house, Raquel fell into the pool, forcing him to dive in and save her. Ares was deathly allergic to chlorine, though, and the pool water nearly killed him . Luckily, he survived, but he had been in a coma for several days before he woke up in the hospital.

Raquel Paid Tribute To Yoshi

She left a copy of her book at the site of his crash.

In Across the Sea , it was revealed that Yoshi had secretly submitted Raquel's book to a publisher. Without him, her book never would have been published, and she never would have become a successful author. So, at the end of Looking at You , Raquel and her friends went to the lighthouse where Yoshi crashed his motorcycle and paid tribute to him . Raquel left a copy of her book at his vigil there, and it was revealed that she dedicated it to him. It was a touching moment in the movie, and it paid respect to a beloved character.

Through My Window 3: Looking At You's True Meaning Explained

It was a story about acceptance and choosing to be together.

Through My Window 3: Looking at You is a relatively simple love story, though it does have its fair share of twists and surprisingly dark moments. Despite its simplistic plot, the movie also had some genuine, heartfelt messages to share. Looking at You 's main theme is that true love means choosing to be with the other person no matter what other people think. Ares wanted to be with Raquel throughout the movie, but his relationship with Vera was better for his family's business, so he stayed with her. When he finally decided to date her publicly, they ended up together because they chose each other.

The other message Looking at You conveyed was that acceptance is a necessary part of love . While the movie may have focused mostly on Ares and Raquel, the side characters of the story did quite a bit of work in delivering the theme of acceptance. In the final scenes, the mother of the Hidalgos, Sofia, accepted Claudia by giving her hoop earrings, which she had previously criticized. The families also learned to practice acceptance, as Alpha3 and Ergamex were able to sign their business deal without Ares and Vera's relationship.

The Through My Window trilogy received poor reviews with every installment, and they had their fair share of problems, but Looking at You still offered a heartfelt story. It also set itself apart from other teen romances with its dark subject matter and surprising twists. Through My Window 3: Looking at You isn't likely to win any awards, but its happy ending finished out the trilogy nicely.

What's the Story?

In THROUGH MY WINDOW: ACROSS THE SEA, the sequel to Through My Window , Ares ( Julio Peña ) and Raquel ( Clara Galle ) are trying to maintain their love affair from a distance as both attend college -- she in Barcelona and he in Stockholm. But both need more emotional support than texting allows, and they start meeting other people. When Ares shows up to surprise Raquel and sweep her away to the beach with friends for a holiday weekend, the two must decide if their relationship is still worth pursuing -- or if the time apart has led to irreparable cracks.

Is It Any Good?

Spain's version of tortured Gen Z love (think After or The Kissing Booth ), this film series is proving popular on Netflix despite flimsy characters and predictable plots. What Through My Window: Across the Sea has, like those other film series, is beautiful people enjoying their youth, having sex, and partying. Nothing wrong with that, but it would be much more interesting to watch if the characters had more personality. We're meant to believe Raquel is a talented writer, for instance, but there's nothing in her dialogues or actions that suggests a thinker's interior world.

Meanwhile, young women seem to relate to their male counterparts in this group mostly through the power of their sexuality. One character, Claudia, keeps returning to a relationship with Ares' big brother Artemis despite shockingly humiliating treatment. Here's hoping the writers give these characters more redeeming qualities in the promised next sequel. What saves the proceedings is the stunning Catalan setting. Though nighttime scenes, like in the original , are filmed with such limited lighting that they're difficult to watch on a small screen, the daytime locations on the Costa Brava memorably show off the region's natural beauty. Cinematographer Marc Miró sends his camera high above ground to capture coastal panoramas and under the clear blue waters of the sparkling Mediterranean.

Civil War (2024) Review

T he story of Civil War is relatively simple and is contained enough to comprehend. It takes place in a near dystopian future where a team of journalists travel across the United States during the tail-end of the Second American Civil War. The nation has been split into four different factions: Loyalist states, Western Forces, Florida Alliance and New People’s Army.

The team of journalists are hoping to interview and capture one last photo of the dictatorship U.S. government before rebel factions storm the capital of Washington D.C. The four main characters come from different experiences in combat journalism, but they must stick together to traverse the dangers of what America has become.

If this concept sounds very close to reality, it could be. While there is no direct correlation between the January 6, 2021, riot and the storming of the U.S. Capitol in real life, there are some similarities. Although it was a fictional movie, the atrocities and social commentary were all too real. However, Civil War director Alex Garland has already stated that they started writing the movie in 2020 and definitely had some influence from the incident, but it was not primarily a direct reference.

“Civil War was a significantly character-driven narrative, showing the various levels of stress on these journalists.”

Even the journalists’ perspectives and actions mimicked and emphasized the work of real war journalists. After watching this film, I could only imagine the war journalists covering so many current real tragedies like the Ukraine-Russia war and the war in Gaza. The film made me think of the People Power Revolution in the Philippines back in the 1980s (where my mother is from). It reminded me of the history of the twenty-year-long authoritarian/dictatorship regime by Ferdinand Marcos Sr. While there was not a full-blown firefight in the final moments to push Marcos out of power, the tensions were just as high.

I really want to commend all of the war/combat journalists and all journalists who are able to capture similar stories of trauma and death. I believe audiences will come out of this film with a genuine appreciation for their hard work, bravery, perseverance and stoicism to continue doing what they do.

Civil War was a significantly character-driven narrative, showing the various levels of stress on these journalists. This was where the core cast shone in their acting. Give Kirsten Dunst an Oscar nomination now because her range of emotions as the stone-faced war photojournalist Lee was golden. Seeing this broken character attempt to pick up the pieces of her past self in the current time was haunting and breathtaking.

“Give Kirsten Dunst an Oscar nomination now because her range of emotions as the stone-faced war photojournalist Lee was golden.”

To have the young budding photojournalist Jessie (Cailee Spaeny) acting opposite of Lee was also a perfect match. It was a true representation of the master and student relationship that felt relatable and realistic. Wagner Moura ( Narcos ) as Joel was a very complex character too, him being someone who is portraying a war junkie of sorts.

To round off the core group, Stephen McKinley Henderson ( Dune: Part One , Devs ) was such a wholesome character. He really brought the parent vibes with a glint of tragedy since he is also somewhat trapped in searching for the best scoops.

Jesse Plemons also proved that he did not need to have a longer on-screen part to make a long-lasting impression. He never fails to add tension to scenes, just take a look at his roles from Breaking Bad or even a strange pick like the action-comedy Game Night. His portrayal as a racist soldier will be one of my nightmares.I have never been as tense as I was watching The Bear season one finale, strangely two different situations of fear vs social anxiety.

Civil War will undoubtedly be a must-talked-about film upon release. It is borderline provocative, a conversation starter and bold. The subtle hints of characters’ pasts revealed through the journey to Washington D.C. are similar to Joel and Elle’s journey in The Last of Us —but still not as much depth as the popular video game and TV series. It is a little ironic that Nick Offerman played a really heartfelt character on HBO’s The Last of Us , but in this film, he is quite heartless.

On sound design and scoring, the silent moments held great weight throughout the movie. When characters are shell-shocked, so is the audience. I felt like this choice made me sit with them in these devastating moments of high stress and chaos. Audiences will probably connect with the haunting silence most recently in Oppenheimer when the atomic bomb goes off for the Trinity Test. There were even moments of silence as we saw the camera shots being taken.

I would say the score was the only thing not memorable, but I can forgive it in place of the nuanced silent moments. Also, check out the map of the divided factions on the film’s social media , which serves as a companion to the film. I feel like this is a must-view map to understand the geographical landscape of the factions. I went in without seeing the map, and I only really understood the two most talked about factions: the Loyalists and Western Forces.

“Civil War really captured my attention with shock and awe moments because it resembles real-world issues and imagery.”

I walked away, peeking into the lives of war journalists, and I think audiences would be gripping their seats as I looked into the microscope of these characters’ snippets of time in their lives. With a runtime shy of 2 hours, it was a concise, tight snippet of a worst-case scenario that offers a slight reality of where America could be heading in the near future.

Civil War really captured my attention with shock and awe moments because it resembles real-world issues and imagery. It is not a romanticized war movie or action flicks like White House Down or Olympus Has Fallen . Rather, it is an intellectual examination, dissection and introspection of real-world views.

As A24’s biggest-budget film, it told a massive narrative. I found this film really bridged the realism and emotional impact better than Netflix’s attempt with Leave the World Behind —despite me liking parts of that film. I think it is movies like this and Civil War which have shown us that the world can be so disconnected, so much so, that the enemies we are facing are not even the ones we can see. It could be A.I. or it could be a hacker in a basement.

Yes, this motion picture is a cautionary tale, but it is still a highly unlikely one to happen—with the power of conversation and democracy in the Western world. There have been countless examples of authoritarian regimes, and many countries and places have overcome them. I do not believe anyone wants that. As long as this dystopian United States is not brought up in a Simpsons episode, I think it is safe to say the U.S. is safe for now.

Civil War (2024) Review

I paid $1,600 to stay at a lodge at Parc Omega, where wolves come right up to your window

  • My friends and I paid $1,600 to stay at a wolf lodge at Parc Omega, a safari park in Quebec, Canada.
  • The lodges had panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows to watch wolves in their forest habitats.
  • We thought the experience was well worth the money, especially since we had access to the trails.

Insider Today

This year, more and more people are prioritizing spending money on trips instead of going out with friends — and, with that, visiting dream destinations and soaking in one-of-a-kind experiences are top of mind.

A few years ago, I saw a video of people on a vacation I knew would be worth adding to my own bucket list . This video showed people staying in a lodge at Parc Omega as beautiful Canadian gray wolves walked past floor-to-ceiling windows.

I knew my friends and I had to visit a wolf lodge for ourselves, and this past winter, we finally got to go. Here's what our $1,600 stay at Parc Omega was like.

I booked my trip to Parc Omega several months in advance.

movie review through my window

Before I booked a lodge, I regularly checked the cabin availability on Parc Omega's reservation page. I didn't have any specific dates in mind, but knew I wanted a two-night stay during the winter months.

Finally, in May 2023, a two-night stay for February 2024 opened up. I eagerly booked a cabin with two of my friends.

The lodge was expensive, but I split the cost with my friends.

movie review through my window

The total for a two-night stay with taxes and fees was $2,160 CAD, or about $1,600 USD, which I split with two friends.

When I booked, I noticed prices for the wolf cabins started at $570 CAD per night. The rates seemed to fluctuate depending on demand and season.

We could choose from a cabin, lodge, or chalet. Since we weren't sure if more friends would join us, we chose a lodge that could house up to six people.

My friends and I flew to Ottawa and drove to Parc Omega.

movie review through my window

The drive from Ottawa to Montebello, Quebec, was about an hour long, but we arrived just in time for the 4 p.m. check-in. When we entered the park, we drove to the check-in cabin, which was located near the entrance.

A receptionist handed us maps of the lodges and the whole park, told us we'd be staying in the Artique Lodge, and gave us directions to our housing unit.

Our lodge was one of four houses located near a 13-member wolf pack's protected forest habitat.

movie review through my window

Our lodge was located near a 13-member-wolf-pack habitat. At check-in, the staff explained we'd see different wolf behaviors dependent on the season.

For example, they said in the spring, parkgoers may see wolf pups emerging from the den with their mother.

There were a few safety precautions in place.

movie review through my window

At check-in, a staff member gave us an emergency number and reminded us not to feed the wolves. A very tall fence also separated the wolf habitat from the lodge's yards and patios, so the animals couldn't get to the parkgoers.

We also couldn't open the windows overlooking the wolves' habitat.

We saw the wolves as soon as we walked through the lodge's doors.

movie review through my window

We saw beautiful Canadian gray wolves standing at our floor-to-ceiling window when we entered the lodge .

We immediately sat on the floor, pressed our noses against the glass, and forgot about unpacking the car and putting groceries in the fridge.

I felt so lucky to see the wolves greeting us as new guests. Some of them even started howling, which gave all of us goosebumps.

We watched the wolves through the window for hours.

movie review through my window

Eventually, my friends and I put a few blankets and pillows on the floor to get cozy as we watched the majestic animals .

The wolves howled well into the night, which felt magical during the snowfall.

The wolves were a highlight of the trip, but the Artique Lodge was really nice, too.

movie review through my window

I thought the Artique Lodge was large enough to fit six people comfortably.

The kitchen had a fridge, stove, microwave, Nespresso machine, and plenty of cookware and utensils. There were two sofas and a coffee table in the living room, four beds around the lodge, and a bathroom on the ground floor.

We also enjoyed an outdoor fire pit with a cooking grate and a seating area.

We enjoyed breakfast alongside the wolves.

movie review through my window

The next morning, we cooked breakfast and enjoyed our meals as the wolves fought over their own food in front of us.

I loved watching the wolves play with each other.

movie review through my window

We continued to watch the wolves sleep, fight, howl, play, and roam around their habitat. I loved observing their behaviors, which I imagine are similar to wolves in the wild.

We also drove along Parc Omega's trail.

movie review through my window

Parc Omega offers a large wildlife safari park with about 20 animal species, including moose, caribou, arctic foxes, and bison. As lodge guests, we had free access to the park.

People not staying at Parc Omega's accommodations can access the wildlife safari with a ticket, which costs about $44 CAD.

With the help of the park map we received at check-in, we drove along the 7 ½-mile marked path, which took about an hour and a half. It was an amazing, lively drive as the deer, moose, and caribou approached our car so we could feed them carrots.

Overall, staying at a lodge at Parc Omega was worth the money.

movie review through my window

The wolf lodges at Parc Omega were a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

I loved how the lodge's panoramic floor-to-ceiling bay windows allowed us to be so close to the wolves. I felt like I was living in a fantasy novel.

Although it was an expensive trip for me, I thought the unique excursion was a great value, especially since we had access to the park trails. I'm ecstatic I crossed the wolf lodges off my bucket list.
