Harvard Book Prize

harvard prize book scholarship and essay award 2023

The Harvard Book Prize is awarded to outstanding students in the next-to-graduating class selected by the Executive Board of the Harvard Club of Ghana, based on academic excellence, exceptional personal qualities, significant contribution to school or community and a written response to an essay prompt. Each winner receives a personally inscribed copy of “The Harvard Book”, an anthology of essays written by Harvard alumni spanning three centuries.

Since 1910, the Harvard Book Prize has been an important way for Harvard Club members to help attract talented young people to Harvard and the opportunities in Cambridge. Harvard Book Prize books are presented annually in more than 1,900 high schools around the world and are made available through generous donations from individual Harvard Club members. Harvard Prize Books are awarded without regard to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin, or political beliefs. Through the Harvard Book Prize program, we, at the Harvard Club of Ghana hope to raise the visibility of Harvard University among local secondary schools in Ghana, and to encourage outstanding students throughout Ghana to consider applying to Harvard

Essay Prompt for the Academic Year 2023-2024

"As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly sophisticated, distinguishing between what is real and what is generated by AI has become more challenging. Reflect on a personal experience where you or someone you know was directly impacted by AI, particularly in a situation that blurred the lines between reality and artificiality. Discuss the implications of this experience on your understanding of truth and authenticity in the digital age. What did this experience teach you about the possible role of young people in helping society navigate these challenges?"

Note: You are welcome to use AI / GPT as a starting point or editor for your responses. However, the successful Prize Book awardees will be creative in demonstrating their capacity to express their own thoughts and their own voice, using technology as an aid.

Please submit an essay, no more than 250 words, responding to the above prompt. Your essay may be either written (PDF, MS Word or other Text File) or recorded on video (MP4 preferred <25MB).

Harvard Prize Book Program

Award Harvard Prize Books to outstanding high school students. In recognizing their scholastic and personal achievements, you inspire their future academic studies and introduce them to the opportunities available at Harvard.

Donated by Harvard Clubs and Shared Interest Groups (SIGs), Prize Books are presented annually in more than 1,000 high schools around the world. Prize Books may be awarded to students in a high school of the Club or SIG’s choosing. Recipients are exemplary students in the next-to-graduating high school class who display excellence in scholarship and achievement in nonacademic fields. Outstanding high school teachers who inspire curiosity and excellence in their students can also receive the award.

The Prize Book is often presented at the chosen school’s award or graduation ceremony, sometimes with appropriate remarks by a local alum.

All orders for the 2023-2024 school year should be placed by 4/30/2024.

How To Participate

1. Establish a Prize Book award: A Harvard Club/SIG or affiliate of Harvard need only contribute the cost of one book.

2.  Select a school: Prize Books may be awarded to students in the next-to-graduating class in a high school of the Club or SIG’s choosing. Contact the local high school principal and/or guidance counselor to introduce the program and to arrange for a student to be selected by the high school to receive the award.

3. Choose a book: A list of book titles is available through the Harvard Coop , although Clubs and SIGs may choose other books not on this list. All books presented by an officially recognized Club or SIG come with an official Harvard bookplate to record the names of the donor and award recipient.

4. Order the book: Click on images of the book to learn more about each title. At checkout, select free ground shipping and enter discount code: HVDBP2024 to be eligible for free shipping.

Shipping & Ordering:

Harvard Book Prize books are eligible for free shipping in the continental U.S.

If other items are included in your COOP order of Harvard Prize Book(s), applicable shipping fees will be applied.

If shipping to multiple addresses in the continental U.S., a fee of $4.95 per address will be applied.

International shipments are based on current U.S. Postal rates and air charges.

Award Guidelines

Prize Books are awarded without regard to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin, or political beliefs.

It is at the discretion of the secondary school to determine the recipient of a Prize Book. Selection cannot be done through an application process.

The Harvard Prize Book Program is not offered in New York City.
