I don’t really remember much of what happened as a child. All I know is that I grew up in a pretty normal household with a mom, dad and an older brother. Not much of the outside world scared me, or even intimidated me. I didn’t even know that there was much of an outside world. Everything I had at home, and around the neighborhood was everything I knew, and that was it. My mom efficiently prepared me for my first day of school in the way she thought to be the best. She would anticipate the day it would come, and assure me that everything was going to be okay. I remember her talking about the games we would play, how I would get to meet other kids my age and that there would be a nice teacher to guide me along my way. It didn’t sound that scary. I mostly liked the idea of getting snacks in the middle and getting to play with new toys, nap time wasn’t really my thing, though; I could always do that at home. There were some things my eager six-year-old self was excited about, but I never understood exactly why I had to go to school. My first day of school, being a big change in my life, is something I will always remember and relate to other dramatic changes which I have gone through. I’m sure that most people can relate to this in a sense that everyone has gone through a significant change in their life, no matter how mundane the event may be.

I wondered what the other kids were like, and why they had to go to school, too. I wondered if they colored, played or did things as well as I did. Probably not. My mom explained to me that I’ll be learning new things, and that I’ll have to go to school five times a week. For me at that age, a week seemed very long. What if I didn’t want to go? What if I just wanted to stay home? I really had mixed emotions about the subject.

After much prepping, the first day of school finally came. I remember getting out of the car and looking up at the structure in front of me. The building had colorful painting on its bricks on the sides, with a bright blue door. My eyes grew bigger, and I didn’t even realize I was holding my breath. All my mixed emotions drained into one at that very moment – fear. I was not sure of exactly what to expect, and I didn’t know anyone in there. How would I call my mom if I wanted something, if I was hungry or if I hurt myself? Suddenly, all of this school business did not seem like such a good idea. I turned to my mom who was holding her hand out to me and smiling. I gave her a worried look, which she caught on to right away. She stepped closer and nudged me towards the door. After she gave me a kiss on the forehead, that was it, she was gone and I was stuck in school, a place I was so unfamiliar with.

The bell rang and I proceeded to walk through the door. I took a big breath and looked around. The room was so bright and colorful and there were so many different artworks posted on the walls. I clearly remember a sea of pinks, yellows, blues and greens. There were pictures of animals, fruits and houses all drawn by other kids decorating the room. I recall there being desks desks with paper and crayons, and there was even a little corner with toys! This calmed me down, and made me feel like it was not as bad as I thought.

I looked at the other kids coming in; I did as they did and left my backpack on a hook near the door, and took a seat in an empty chair closest to me. We were greeted by an older lady; she told us that she was going to be our teacher. She started us off by calling us from a list one by one; to make sure we were all there. I also remember having name tags of some sort, I think we kept those on even a week after school started. At that time, I didn’t get why, I already knew my name after all.

We learned some songs, played a lot of games and because we all did what we were told, we got some time to play with the toys in the corner of the room. Next thing I know, we were given snacks. We then got to play outside on the playground. Because of all the playing, we got tired pretty soon, and they let us sleep. After a bit more games, another bell rang and the teacher told us it was time to go home. The day seemed really long since we did so much, but none of it was boring.

As soon as I grabbed my bag and stepped outside the door, I saw my mom waiting for on the side walk. I ran to her, and clearly remember feeling like I haven’t seen her in such a long time. During the car ride back home, I talked tirelessly about how the day went and all the new things I did, and how the other children were just like me, and most of them like the same things I liked. I asked her when I’ll go back, and I just got excited when she told me when I wake up in the morning, I’ll be going again.

I don’t remember ever feeling that anxious and excited all at once, all my expectations about school were mostly wrong. According to most researchers specializing in childhood psychology, children do tend to have very unrealistic expectations about their first day of school (Kendrick).

I had a pretty average childhood before kindergarten; I guess all my fears about changing my environment just came up because I was not sure of what to expect leaving the comforts of my home. This was the first significant time in which I realized that there is a bigger world out there, and there are so many things to learn, people to meet and things to do. I felt so grown-up at that time, being able to go somewhere where I didn’t need my parents, it was all just me, no help. I guess that this first day of kindergarten is much like all the other first days of school – like the first day of middle school, high school and even college. I built myself up with all these ideas, and you get all worked up about them, but once you’re there and you get the flow of how things are done, it becomes easier. When there is an event in your life, no matter how mundane or usual it may seem, it can change how you view things. Looking back at my first day of kindergarten and evaluating my thoughts as compared to what actually happened, I can say that I got overwhelmed more with the idea of kindergarten more than anything. Once you get over those negative thoughts in your head, you realize that it’s not that bad. You just have to rise above your thoughts and your fears. My first day of kindergarten will always be that event I’ll remember which changed how I saw things in life.

I went to the class and gave that chit to the teacher sitting in the class. He told me to take a seat on the front bench. He was teaching English to the class. Then the bell rang and the second period started.

In recess, I took my lunch. The class monitor joined me in my lunch. He was a nice fellow. He showed me to the school and took me to the playground. It was a big ground.

After recess, there were four more periods. I was feeling quite comfortable in the class. All the teachers were very nice and friendly. Their way of teaching was also very good and interesting.

At 1 O’clock the last bell went. I left the class and came back home. My mother was waiting at the door. She was worried about me. She felt relieved when she saw me happy. I told her everything that happened in the school. She was glad to hear the account of my first day in school.

A lot of the things I did just yesterday I will have difficulty in remembering but many years ago my first day in school, I remember in every detail. It was a Wednesday morning in March at Mount Abu. It was a cold morning and I was shivering because I did not want anything to spoil the new school uniform I was wearing.

The previous day my Mother, Father and I had visited the school to see my class and meet my class teacher and so I knew where I had to go and who would be my teacher.

That day my mother woke me up very early. I was just two and a half years old and I cried when I was awoken so early. My parents took me to my class where the teacher Mrs. Varghese stood with open arms to receive me. She was a very kind and gentle lady. I was the first student to reach her class. After speaking briefly to her my parents kissed me and assuring that they would return to pick me up, they went away.

My teacher showed me where to sit and made me comfortable. Just then a class mate of mine came, a girl by the name of Richa and she was crying loudly. Soon after her many came in with their parents and all were crying. I felt that there must be something that I am supposed to fear and so I too started crying. My teacher sang for us, played music for us, acted the clown for us but we just cried. In the end she started crying and then one by one we stopped crying. I went over to my teacher and told her not to cry. Then my teacher stopped crying and we did whatever she told us to do. We loved her because she was just like us.

My mother accompanied me to school on the first day. Other parents accompanied their children as well. We all waited in front of the school office.

Soon a teacher came and led us to some classrooms. There we were put into four separate classes. This was when some children began to cry as the parents were not allowed into the classrooms. Still some parents looked in anxiously through the windows.

Finally the bell rang for us to go home. Some of us relieved to be reunited with our parents. I too were very was glad to see my mother waiting for me at the school gate. I had made many friends. It had been a wonderful first day at school.

Soon I was one of them. What I considered their aloofness was just discipline. How could they talk in front of the teacher! Now, I love my school.

In the recess, many classmates came to me and asked my name and address. We ate our lunch together. After recess we had periods of games and music. Then the last bell went and the school was over. What a life of anxiety at the school! I wept in my heart at the loss of my freedom. I yearned for my mother’s kisses, love and tenderness. I badly missed the cakes and biscuits. I badly missed my friends. I was deprived of my games and pranks. I lost all smiles and joy. I counted the minutes and hours to the end of the daily round of school.

The bell for recess rang. Children rushed out of the classroom. Some of them gathered around me as if they were watching some strange creature. They started laughing at me and made fun of me. I felt very bad. However, a few children felt sad for the trouble caused to me by other children in the class. Some came forward to support me. This was something very new for me. The final bell rangat two o’clock in the afternoon. All the children were overjoyed. Even I was happy that the first day got ended. I picked up my bag and water bottle and hurried back to my home.

After about two months of summer vacation, our school reopened on the 16th of July, the 15th of July being the Sunday. After a long relaxation of two months inhabits to wake up late in the morning, I got up early in the morning. I took my breakfast and left for school. The school was to open at 9 a.m.

On one hand, I seemed to be quite enthusiastic to be again with my friends whom I really missed during the vacation but on the other, I seemed to be averse to the routine of the school which was not so exhilarating for its disciplined code of attending classes and reading lessons, solving sums and doing laboratory work Still there was something which made this routine somewhat worth doing.

On the way to school, I met my friends. Everyone looked cheerful. As we reached the school gate, we heard the ringing of the call bell. We first buried to our classrooms to keep our bags and then to prayer ground to attend the prayer. At the end of the prayer, our Principal addressed the boys. In his address, the Principal mentioned Wordsworth’s observation, “A twig is bent, so the tree will grow”. In relation to tender and delicate students he said that the minds of students were like photographic plates, whatever impressions are left on them, they retain it. So he advised us to cast the impressions which would include love of the motherland, devotion to duty, regularity, and punctuality. Then at the end of his address, we all went to our classes.

On the first day, we did not have our regular studies. Most of the teachers were busy with new admissions. Moreover, the students were also not in the mood to study. The students were talking about their experiences of the summer vacation. I told them about my visit to Ajanta, Allora, and stay in Nanital for a fortnight. In school, 1 found a large number of changes, broken window panes had been replaced, rooms were whitewashed and the furniture repaired. Everything looked new. The thing which I liked most was the water cooler, which was a great comfort to us in summer.

While we were enjoying gossiping in the class, the bell announced the beginning of the recess period. This year a new canteen was installed in the school. It was run by ‘Students Cooperative Society”. I went to the canteen with my friends. The tea, coffee, cold drinks, and snacks all were available at cheap rates. I had a cold drink and some snacks there. In the meantime, the call bell rang and we all went back to our classes.

After the fifth period, all the students assembled in the hall. The new corners were seated on the stage. At first, the Principal welcomed the new students. Some of them seemed to be very active and smart. They told about their likings and hobbies, which were admirable. In the end, the Principal welcomed the teachers. Soon the function came to an end. returned home with the sweet and happy memories of the day.

My first day at school was the beginning of my life. The day was significant for me and my family. My father had been looking forward to this day with great hope as he wanted that I should adjust in my class and rise in life, through hard work and co-operation.

Early that morning there was much stir in the family. My elder brother was particularly happy. That made him look responsible as I was kept under his charge. My father bought candies and we proceeded towards the school.

I was taken to the Principal’s office. The Principal was a big man with heavy, and bushy eyebrows. I almost dreaded him in the beginning. But soon I found that under those bushy eyebrows he had one of the softest pairs of eyes. And he spoke softly. He patted my back and asked me questions. I answered his questions without any feeling of fear. He talked to my father. Then my father took me to another gentleman who I learnt later was my class teacher.

He was tall, lean, and bespectacled. He greeted my father. He stretched his long arm and took me under his arm. He talked politely to me. My -father gave him the packet of candies and requested him to introduce me to the class and distribute the candies among my classmates. My father then took leave of him.

My teacher took me to my class. He told the boys that I was their new classmate. He then distributed the candies my father had given to him.

I was given a seat in the class. It was a new place and soon I started feeling lonely. Nobody in the class was known to me and no one talked to me. By recess time I was almost fed up with my school. I wanted to go home. The bell rang for recess. The boys from all the classes ran out. They flooded the school courtyard. But I stood alone in the crowd of strangers. I still remember how small I was then. Being unable to bear it any longer I began to cry. It was only a few minutes but it seemed ages before in brother arrived there. With him was another boy whose brother was also studying in my class. He brought him and introduced him to me. This was my first acquaintance in school. After the recess, we re-entered the classroom.

My teacher was told how I had cried during recess. He spoke politely to me. I liked him. I liked my new acquaintance also. Soon I felt calm and since that day I had never cried in school.

My First Day in School

When I passed class V, my father took me to Jain Happy Senior Secondary School, Daryaganj, Delhi. My father took us there in his car. The sight of the grand building made me nervous. I entered the main gate. Many boys were sitting there in a group.

We went to the Principal. My father had a talk with him. My father filled out the admission form. He admitted me to the sixth standard. Then my father left for his office.

My elder brother was in the 8th grade in the same school. I still remember my first day in school. It was an interesting day for me. I was nine years old at that time.

There were about 3o students in the class. They were in their uniforms. They were reading the first lesson from the English Book. The class teacher was kind. She made me sit in the first row. She introduced me to other boys. Then there was teaching for four periods. The students were nice and friendly.

At 12.30 the bell rang, and the school was over. My mother came to take me home. I always remember my first day in school.

Whenever I ponder over my school days, the reflection takes me to a meek quiet boy. A reserve guy with quiet habits, feeling shy of everything. I find him dressed in khaki shorts and a white shirt, a pair of bright shining shoes with white socks. Well combed hair and slightly oiled face may be due to perspiration or nervousness. My father was transferred to Jalandhar from Shimla. The transfer came in the mid-session of the fourth class. I moved quite extensively from corner to corner with my father for admission, but everywhere, the answer was negative. It was after laborious efforts that D.A.V. Public School accepted to accommodate me in the new class.

In the next stage, my father left me at the school gate the next day and asked me, to proceed to my class. He perhaps felt that I was grown up enough to protect my own interest. I was moving towards the stairs with a very heavy and hesitant mind. Nobody was known to me except my class teacher who examined my papers for admission. He was perhaps sitting in the classroom because the morning assembly was already over. He was marking attendance as I stood at the entrance gate of the class. I was told that there were forty students in the class and myself was forty-one. Anyway, very reluctantly I peeped into the room. The teacher saw me and said, “Hello Sunil, so you have come. Come in and take your seat with Suresh on the first bench.” The only student on the desk accommodated me very willingly and provided me a seat with a helping and affectionate hand. Soon we were good friends. We were taught a new topic in the social study by the teacher. He asked some questions from the students which were not answered well. I took the initiative and answered all the questions to the best of my knowledge. The teacher was satisfied and enlisted me among the best ten students in the class.

It was recess time soon after and we all started playing in the central ground. Suresh introduced me to many other students of the class. The bell rang and we rushed to the class. Similar phases of the morning session repeated in the next period of Mathematics and English. The concerned teachers appreciated my capability at studies and this helped me to gain better confidence in myself. Soon the periods were over we were asked to pack up for return. My class teacher guided me to proceed towards the bus. The conductor shook hands with me and welcomed me for a good seat. It was a beautiful and well-provided bus. I reached home in an hour. My mother was waiting for me on the main crossing. She asked me about the school and its teaching staff. I gave all the best appreciation to my teachers and told my mother that I had formed a good number of friends and that I enjoyed the day very nicely. She was happy that my silence and hesitation has ultimately wound up for good. She felt happy that I could fit in well in the new setup and atmosphere.

Classroom — the room where lessons take place. A classroom may be equipped with a blackboard, desks, chairs, projector, etc. Example: “The classroom was decorated with colorful posters and student artwork.”
Classmate — another student in your class. Classmates work together on projects and assignments. Example: “She always helps her classmates with their homework.”
Teacher’s Desk — the teacher’s workspace, where they keep materials, books, and other items needed for lessons. Example: “The teacher keeps all the lesson plans on the teacher’s desk .”
Projector — a device used to display images or videos on a large screen or classroom wall, often used for presentations and demonstrations. Example: “The teacher used a projector to show the science experiment video.”
Chalk / Marker — tools for writing on the board. Chalk is used on blackboards, and markers are used on whiteboards. Example: “She picked up a piece of chalk and started writing on the board.”
Bulletin Board — a surface where announcements, schedules, and student work are posted. Example: “The bulletin board displays students’ artwork and upcoming events.”
Assignment — a task given to students to complete in class or at home. Example: “Today’s assignment is to write an essay on your favorite book.”
Attendance Sheet — a document where the teacher marks students’ presence in class. Example: “The teacher checked the attendance sheet at the beginning of the class.”
Schedule — a document or table showing the times and order of lessons or activities. Example: “I always check my schedule to know which class is next.”
Gradebook — a special book where the teacher records students’ grades for tests, homework, projects, and other activities. It often also tracks attendance. Example: “The teacher recorded the test scores in the gradebook .”
Homework — tasks assigned to students to complete at home after classes. Homework can include reading, writing essays, solving problems, etc. Example: “Don’t forget to do your homework before tomorrow’s class.”
Quiz — a short test to assess students’ knowledge on a specific topic. It is usually used to check understanding of the material. Example: “There will be a quiz on the chapter we studied last week.”
Exam — a more extensive test covering a large amount of material. Exams are usually given at the end of a term or school year. Example: “The final exam will cover all the topics we’ve learned this term.”
Classwork — tasks completed by students during lessons. This can be individual or group work. Example: “Today’s classwork involves solving problems in pairs.”
Syllabus — a document outlining the topics and materials to be covered in a course, along with information about assessment, important dates, etc. Example: “The professor handed out the syllabus on the first day of class.”
Lecture — an oral presentation by a teacher or professor providing new information or material. Lectures are often accompanied by notes or presentations. Example: “The lecture on world history was very informative.”
Break — a short period of rest between lessons or activities. Breaks allow students to relax and prepare for the next lesson. Example: “Students have a ten-minute break between classes.”
Locker — a small personal storage space at school where students can keep their belongings, textbooks, and other supplies. Example: “He keeps his books and sports gear in his locker .”

School Subjects

In schools, students study a variety of subjects to develop different skills and knowledge. Here is a list of core and elective school subjects that may be part of the curriculum:

Mathematics — a major subject that includes arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. Mathematics teaches problem-solving, logical thinking, and data analysis. Example: “We learned how to solve quadratic equations in Mathematics today.”

My child’s disabilities made her first day of school anything but typical

No other parent in JJ’s grade would be checking anything like this off their list.

A few days before kindergarten was set to begin for my daughter, JJ, I gathered up all the school supplies I needed to deliver during Back to School Night. I looked down at the list I created earlier in the summer and mentally ticked off the items: Clorox wipes, Crayola markers, pencil case. Then I looked at the stack of neatly folded papers sitting on top of the supplies, and my stomach lurched. No other parent in JJ’s grade would be checking anything like this off their list.

The folded papers were letters I created to introduce my daughter to the other families in her mainstream classroom. She will spend a good amount of time in her special education classroom, receiving specialized attention and support. However, several times each day, she will be integrated into a class of her typically developing peers. I knew that the minute she rolled into the room in her wheelchair, with her speech device clamped onto a mount in front of her, that her classmates would see how different she was from them. This is why I had gotten permission from the school to send a letter home with each child. I desperately wanted to get ahead of their whispered questions and curious stares.

The letter explained all about JJ’s rare syndrome and her equipment but also described how smart, funny and alert she is. There are still many ways in which JJ resembles her peers, so I also attached a little card explaining my daughter’s personality and interests. It included fun facts—her adaptive, motorized car—and a list of her likes—Kidz Bop, Matilda, and princesses.

As I stared at the stack of letters and cards, I realized why they made me feel so strange: They signaled not only JJ’s differences, but my own. If my daughter is not a typical kindergartner, then I am not a typical kindergarten mother. There are so many experiences, hopes, fears and dreams I will never share with the parents of my daughter’s classmates.

Instead of the usual rites of passage, my family has had other milestones we celebrated on our journey to marking JJ’s first day of kindergarten . For example, on the night before she took the first dose of a special new medication—the very first approved to treat her syndrome.The four of us dressed up, ate cupcakes and had a party. More unusual milestones followed, like the times when the medicine helped our daughter say a few words again or to sit up on her own for the first time in years.

Families like mine have our own moments of private joy. During these, we don’t commemorate the passage of time or the brightness of the future like others do. We try not to focus on whether or not that particular milestone will ever be repeated or what it could mean for the future. Instead, we celebrate the amount of work, bravery and perseverance it took us all to get there.

Three days after Back to School Night , I wheeled her onto the bus for her first day of kindergarten. She looked excited as I gave her one last wave and watched the para secure her wheelchair to the floor of the vehicle. As the bus drove away, I thought about all the obstacles and complications that my family had overcome in order to reach this moment. We navigated multiple diagnoses, an emergency brain surgery, the loss and return of JJ’s sight, the installation of a feeding tube and months of uncontrolled seizures.

That same morning the school organized a “Coffee and Kleenex” event for all the kindergarten parents. As soon as I read the title of the event, I knew I wouldn’t attend it. Not because I didn’t appreciate the sentiment, I just knew I wouldn’t fit in. No part of me would grieve my daughter’s first day of school . I have been waiting a long time for the relief and help it would provide. School gives JJ so many things that my husband and I cannot: constant stimulation, a sense of independence, opportunities for daily therapies, and socialization with a host of other children. We might have needed tissues at many other times, but we certainly didn’t need any now.

As the bus rounded the corner and disappeared out of sight, I imagined JJ sitting in her wheelchair, eager to begin the next chapter of her life. Then I turned back toward my now quiet house. Once I crossed the threshold, I smiled and released a sigh of relief. I felt ready to begin my next chapter too.

My kindergartner went missing on the first day of school. An AirTag helped bring him home safely.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Shannon Stoker. It has been edited for length and clarity.

She put him on the bus, but in the afternoon school said he'd never arrived.

The school couldn't tell me what bus Stevie was on that afternoon

On the first day of school, Stevie was excited. I took his back-to-school photo , and he got on the bus. I checked his AirTag a few times that day, and it showed him at school. I pictured him having a great first day. That's what I was hoping for.

Our plan was for Stevie to take the bus directly to therapy after school. But his online student profile hadn't been updated, so I was worried he might be bused home. I tried to call the transportation company but couldn't get through. Finally, I got through to the school, where someone told me Stevie was on a bus — they just didn't know which.

At 3:45, I stared at the AirTag, trying to figure out where my son was. Stevie rides a special needs bus with four other kids, but I thought the school might have mistakenly put him on the main bus. So, my older son and I walked to the neighborhood bus stop.

When the school said Stevie had been absent, I called 911

That's when the school called again and told me Stevie hadn't been there all day. I went into a total panic. I hung up and called 911. The school called back and confirmed they had checked every kindergarten and special ed class — no Stevie.

Stevie's AirTag had been at school, but terrible things went through my head. I worried that his backpack had somehow arrived, but my child didn't. I even wondered if I'd put him on a real bus that morning. It was sheer terror. The 911 operator could tell. She stayed on the phone with me until an officer arrived at my house.

My husband and the police used the tag to track Stevie

The officer was immediately interested in the AirTag data, and he radioed the tag's location to other officers. I would have chased it myself, but he had told me not to leave. I was in no state to drive.

My husband Andy arrived home from work early, and he didn't even have time to get out of the car before I sent him to chase the AirTag.

Still, I was worried that we were focused too much on the device. The AirTag wasn't actually on Stevie, and if we were chasing a backpack instead of a boy, my son could already be across state lines.

Andy followed the AirTag location and found a bus for people with special needs. He, along with two police officers, pulled up to the bus. The driver told Andy that Stevie wasn't on board. Luckily, Andy peeked in the windows and said, "My son is right there."

The school had mistaken my child for another boy

I was relieved to know Stevie was with Andy. I still get teary thinking about it. They got home at about 4:45 p.m. — the whole incident had lasted about an hour.

Around 5:30 p.m., I heard from the school again. They explained that when Stevie got off the bus, they asked if he was another boy. Stevie didn't answer, so they assumed he was that other boy. The other boy was marked present when he wasn't at school, and Stevie was marked absent.

Stevie was moved to a different school, and for now, Andy and I are driving Stevie to and from kindergarten. He's having a difficult transition to kindergarten, but after this experience, I think that's understandable.

Both Stevie and now his older brother have AirTags in their backpacks for peace of mind.

Editor's Note — DeKalb Community Unit School District 428 provided the following statement to Business Insider:

"The District office was informed of an incident involving a misidentified kindergarten student at Founders Elementary on Monday, August 19. The child was mistaken for another child when getting off the bus in the morning and placed in the other child's classroom. The child was under classroom supervision during the day, and we are thankful the child was located on the bus route home and is safe.

"Although we are aware that information is being shared on social media, as a District, we cannot disclose any additional information or details to protect the privacy of the child, family, and staff involved as we work to resolve this incident.

"We are deeply sorry for the concern this caused the family and we are conducting a full investigation of the events of the day. Ensuring that each and every child is safe on their routes to and from school, along with their day at school, is our critical priority, and we will continue to evaluate and make adjustments to our procedures to that end."
