Most makers don’t have a business plan. For a lot of us, we never intended to be business owners. We just liked making things.

Eventually, somewhere along the way that changed into a way to make some extra money on the side, a way to create flexible working conditions, or even just a way to get paid to make things.

When you slide into building a business, you often skip the foundations. It all seems like a bit of an experiment so business plans and strategy feel like something for later. You just want to figure out whether you can make this thing work before thinking about any of that stuff.

But here’s the problem with that approach.

Business is ALWAYS an experiment. It’s never done. Just like life, there’s never a point when you’ve got it all figured out and you’re just doing it.

So, all that time you’re just “trying to figure it out?” 

You’re doing it. You’re running a business.

But without any kind of plan, you’re taking the long way around.  And no, “make enough sales to live on” is not a business plan.

So, what is a business plan and why do you need one if you already know you need to sell more?

A business plan is document that sets out how your business will function. It sets out what you want your business to look like. But business plans don’t need to be some huge, boring document that’s painful to create.

If you’re trying to secure funding then your business plan generally needs to follow a set format but if it’s just a roadmap for you it can take any form you like.

So it doesn’t have to be a dry, boring document.

You could sketch or draw your business plan, you could make a business plan vision board, you could write the story of your future business.

You can make your business plan as creative as you want, as long as it gives you clarity on a few simple questions.

Questions like:

— What do you want your business to provide for you? — How much money do you need to get this? — What products do you intend to sell? — How many of them do you intend to sell? — Who will you sell them to? Be as specific as possible — What will you do to find a large number of these people? — How will you continue to sell to them?

It should be fun to think about this stuff. To think about what it is you want your business to provide for you and for your customers.

But there are also other benefits to creating a business plan, the biggest one being that this kind of clarity about what you want makes it easy to overcome some of the most common problems faced by makers.

1. Lack of direction and problems with decision making

It becomes SO much easier to make a decision when you have something to measure it against. When you can think about a decision and consider whether your choice will bring you closer to your business plan or not, it’s simple to know which path to choose.

2. Money Mistakes

A lot of makers waste a large amount of money on expensive shows and advertising that don’t bring any real benefits. It’s also very easy to overbuy materials and equipment when you’re first getting started. But if you know exactly how many products you need to sell to make a profit on that fancy stand or that glossy advert, it makes it easier to avoid getting carried away.

3. Overwhelm

Overwhelm is such a common issue for makers and so much of it comes from having so many things you COULD be doing, but no idea which one you SHOULD be doing. A business plan helps you focus on the most important things – getting your work in front of more of the people most likely to become customers, getting those people to sign up to hear more from you and then making them fall in love with you. 4. Distractions

So often we find ourselves getting massively distracted when we don’t know where to start.

Think about it, how often do you find yourself hopping on to Facebook when you don’t know what to write in a difficult email or a tricky section of a blog post (ahem)?

Or what about the distractions we can’t just switch off? Health issues, friends and family who need us, that annoying person who always seems to be doing work on their house?

When we have a limited amount of time to work on our business because other things keep getting in the way it certainly helps to have something to remind you of what you’re doing and why. Your business plan can do this for you and help you quickly figure out what the priority is today.

But remember, the business plan sets out the destination. It doesn’t set out the route. Your strategy is the route. If the Business Plan is the What, your strategy is the How. Or at least the How I’ll try first.

Because running a business is really just a series of experiments to see what works – with a bit of common sense thrown in.

It’s all about testing different things and finding out what works for your lifestyle, your income goals, the way you want to work, the customers you want to serve, the life you want to have. And that’s different for everyone.

While you’re looking for that How, it can be easy to get off track. It can be easy to follow experts and other makers into the rabbit hole of a new social media platform, or to get worried about missing out on a new art show. This is where your Business Plan keeps you grounded. It keeps you focused on the destination so that, unlike Alice, you don’t need to take the long way.

Of course things always change and your Business Plan doesn’t need to be rigid. In fact you might even make it a yearly exercise to revisit and review both the destination (your Business Plan) and the route (your Strategy)

There’s no need to spend hours reviewing every detail of your business; there are three key areas that should be reviewed at the end of each month and year to ensure:

  • You’re spending time and money in the right places
  • You know where the holes in your system are
  • You’re building a profitable business

You have to know where you want to end up before you start moving (unless you’re looking for an adventure, in which case, wander away!).

And if you want to end up someplace new and reach a goal you’ve never reached,  you’ve got to do things you’ve never done .

You can’t repeat what you did last year and expect new results…or even the same results. Planning involves not only setting achievable goals but thinking about what you’re going to change to reach them.

There really are a million and one things you  could  do as a business owner, but randomly adding tasks to your to-do list is like throwing darts in the dark;  how do you know if you’re working on the right things that will result in sales?

There will always be more to do than there is time to do it, so you must strategically organize your to-do’s to ensure the work that goes on your schedule is  purposeful  (I’ll help you determine what that is)

You also must create balance. A handmade business requires the extra workload of creating all the products you sell. But you cannot let creating take over while important tasks that sell those creations are ignored.

I hate ending a day feeling like I was unproductive or didn’t accomplish what I needed to…or worse yet, not even knowing what I needed to accomplish and feeling like I worked for the sake of working.

If you build your schedule from the organized tasks that  stem from a bigger  revenue-producing  project , you’ll have a simple and valuable to-do list that you know is leading you towards sales.

Tracking numbers can become a bit of a ham story. 

(The ham story is: someone asks their mom why she cuts the ends of the ham before putting it in the oven. Mom says because her mom did it, who did it because her mom did it, and great-grandma finally explains that she did it so the ham would fit in her small roasting pan. Generations had been wasting perfectly good ham simply because they were  blindly following someone else’s actions. )

I don’t want you to be wasting perfectly good time on meaningless tasks.  Excessive tracking  tends to be one of them.

Someone likely offered a free worksheet to track how many followers each social media account has and now everyone thinks they should be tracking followers. But in most cases, tracking social media followers, along with many other stats, is a waste of time.

Kaolin Calefactors is a sole proprietorship founded and owned by Sue Glazer.

2.2 Start-up Summary

Kaolin Calefactors will incur the following start-up costs:

  • Computer system with a CD-RW, printer, Microsoft Office and QuickBooks Pro.
  • Commercial kiln.
  • Electric potters wheel.
  • Storage containers for the clay and glazes.
  • Assorted tools for trimming, edging and glazing.
  • Shelves and large tables for storage and work spaces.
  • Website development.

Please note that the following items which are considered assets to be used for more than a year will labeled long-term assets and will be depreciated using G.A.A.P. approved straight-line depreciation method.

Kaolin Calefactors makes production and custom dishware. KC manufactures a line of 12 production styles of dishware as well as the option of custom designs. Custom designs can be either based on a design KC has done in the past or can be a creation of the customer.

Please note that the use of the term production is not the traditional usage. While Sue does have some production designs, all this means is that she makes them for inventory regardless if there is an order for them. The pieces of dishware that are offered are serving platters, dinner plates, bowls, coffee cups, and saucers. Other pieces can be created at the request of the customer. The dishware comes in several different shapes as well as different glazing options. Kaolin Calefactors products are expensive. KC is not trying to compete on price. KC will be making high quality, handmade pieces, that can be glazed in any way the customer wants. The price/positioning strategy will be the upper end of the market.

The market can be segmented into two different groups:

  • People that are purchasing the pottery for other people. This segment is looking for a gift for someone and want something that is unique, and stands out relative to most other dishware. This segment often will be purchasing from the production line of dishware
  • People that are buying pottery for themselves. Some people have a very specific idea/style in mind and are more likely to opt for a custom design. Custom work is more expensive and typically more unique, it is intuitive to expect that the more unique design, the more likely that the person is buying the product for themselves.

4.2 Target Market Segment Strategy

These two groups will be targeted by developing visibility for Kaolin Calefactors in areas that people interested in fine, handmade dishware can be found, including participating in local craft fairs. Local craft fairs are a gathering of different crafts people that set up booths displaying all of their creations. People that are looking for unique, handmade designs, will often come to the craft fairs to view a wide selection of products.

Kaolin Calefactors will also have a website that will extensively detail all of the different production designs that are available. In addition to the production items, Sue’s portfolio of past and present designs will be available online to offer suggestions for custom designs.

The craft industry is composed of wood workers, ceramics, doll painters, and jewelers. The majority of craftspeople attend weekend craft shows while at the same time maintaining a full-time job. This aspect of having a full-time job and creating crafts for sale is interesting in the sense that people are trying to combine their hobby into a minor money making venture.

The minority of craftsmen turn their hobby into a full-time job, like Sue.

While most craftsmen generally work at home, potters as a subset typically rent out space. Potters typically have more equipment and require more space for the different phases of the pottery, like the drying phase, the post-kiln phase, and then the post-glazing phase.

The competition consists of different sources.

  • Commercial dishware manufacturers. This competitor mass manufactures a wide range of dishware. These companies appeal to someone that is looking for general dishware. These competitors serve people that are more interested in function instead of aesthetics.
  • Assorted craftspeople. This group of competitors is serving the segment of people that are purchasing the ceramics for gifts.
  • Other potters. This group is the most direct competitor in terms of business activities, but not necessarily the most vigorous. 5.1 Competitive Edge

Kaolin Calefactors’ competitive edge is their customer-centric approach to business. This is most prevalent in the custom designs where Sue works hand-in-hand with the customer to allow them to create their perfect design. This cooperative relationship with the customer begins at the design stage and continues throughout the work process.

This customer-centric approach is quite intuitive and effective for several reasons. It is intuitive for Sue because while it is obviously important for the business to make money, Sue believes that if she treats customers properly the profits will happen as a by product. This approach is effective because it is far cheaper to maintain a happy customer than it is to attract new ones.

5.2 Sales Strategy

The sales strategy will be based on communicating that owning your own production, or custom, dishware is a source of pride and appreciation by you as well as your guests. Dishware is something that you use, typically two times a day. It is something that you are always looking at. It is also something that can add to the presentation of the food. Lastly, if properly cared for, the dishware is a long-term investment because it is quite durable and the designs can be timeless.

The other element that will be emphasized when trying to turn a prospective customer into a sale is the cooperative process that involves the customer in the creation of their dishware.

The first month of business will be used to set up the work studio as well as line up retail sales outlets, schedule upcoming craft fairs, and the design of the website. There will be a bit of business occurring in month two with a steady increase by month five.

Sue Glazer has a Bachelor of Arts from Washington and Jefferson. After taking a variety of classes her freshman year, including a ceramics class, she fell in love with pottery. Recognizing that ceramics was her love in life, she continued schooling at Carnegie Mellon University, pursuing her Masters in Art.

After this two-year program, she began looking for jobs that would allow her to practice her love of pottery. Through contact with one of her professors from W&J, she learned a professorship was open at W&J in the art department, and she spent four years teaching ceramics. After the four years she decided to move out to the Pacific Northwest.

When you see the words "business plan" you might immediately think of the traditional kind of plan that requires things like market analyses, organizational charts, and detailed financial projections.

Don't panic!

We're not talking about writing a colossal formal business plan. As a craft business owner, you probably don't need a formal business plan.

You do require a roadmap designed for the needs of a handmade business to help you:

  • create products shoppers will love
  • meet important deadlines (like craft show application closing dates)
  • set smart goals
  • and use your time productively

Research craft trends for 2022

In December, companies like Etsy and Pinterest release trend reports for the upcoming year. January a great time to dig into some of these reports, see what customers might be searching for in the coming year, and decide if and how you want to reflect some of those trends in your own business.

1. Learn about craft trends for the current year

Each year, I review the newest trend reports with an eye toward understanding trends that are most relevant to craft business owners. Check out my article  Crafts That Sell Well - updated for 2022  to see what design trends might impact your sales in the coming year.

2. Find design trends on Pinterest

I follow several companies that publish fashion and decor trends predictions and share their reports on Pinterest, so you can find them quickly.

4. Decide if you want to reflect any of the trend predictions for 2022 in your business

Do current trends fit with your brand? Would embracing certain trends advance your craft business plans and goals? You'll need to determine for yourself the right balance between trendy and classic for your company.

5. Decide how you will reflect 2022 trends in your business

If you do want to embrace a trend or two, you'll need to decide how that will look. Will you incorporate hot colors? design motifs? a specific type of product? a particular frame of mind or philosophy?

Of course, you can reflect trends in your product design, but there are also other ways to embrace trends. You could reflect trends in your craft booth merchandising, your product packaging, or your communication with customers as well.

Set realistic goals

Realistic, motivating goals that are in line with your values should be at the heart of your craft business plan.

A business plan is a road map to get to a specific destination. Your goals are the destination.

Time spent reflecting on your core goals and values will help ensure you make plans, decisions, and commitments throughout the year that will lead you to create the type of business you really want.

6. Define your priorities

You can't possibly do it all, so you need to decide what's really important. What do you want to do extraordinarily well, and what are you willing to let go of to achieve that goal?

If you  set compelling priorities , you can actually accomplish more by doing less but doing it better.

7. Consider where you want to be long term

When you know where you want your business to be next year, you'll be able to make better decisions about how to invest your time.

With your  ideal business goals  in mind, you can work out the steps you need to take to get from where you are to where you want to be. You'll be better equipped to make strategic decisions to work on projects that support your vision instead of bouncing from day to day on tasks that don't lead to your big picture goal.

8. Tie your goals to actions, not outcomes

For the most part, you can control whether you follow through on a commitment to action. You can not control the outcome. So if you want to stay motivated to accomplish something big, your goal needs to revolve around actions, not outcomes.

The  SMART goal setting  technique is all you need to set realistic, motivating goals that are tied to actions.

9. BONUS: Reassess your values, priorities, and goals

If you're up for investing some time to make sure you're really building a business that's in line with your values, you need to read Busy: How to Thrive in a World of too Much by Tony Crabbe.

I've read stacks of popular books about setting and achieving goals.

Honestly, I didn't like many of them.

Most other books on the subject assume you have total control over vast swaths of time. You just need to learn to use all of that time well.

I don't have vast swaths of wide open time. I'm willing to bet you don't either.

That's why Busy is the one book about priorities and goal setting that completely blew me away.

The book centers around the assumption that your time is finite and precious. It completely changed my perspective and transformed how I approach life and business goal planning.

Build effective work habits

What's at the heart of achieving your smart goals and following through on your craft business plan? 

Habits will get you further than willpower. Willpower is finite and requires emotional effort and energy. Habits, once established, happen automatically.

Research shows that habits account for a full 45% of our daily behaviors ! If you can consciously develop more constructive habits, you could potentially get 45% of your day right automatically.

10. Determine the habit you want to build

Remember, you can't do everything, and often you can accomplish more by doing less. So choose one or two habits that will have the biggest impact on the goals you set for your business.

Commit to building those one or two most impactful habits.

Stay focused.

Don't let yourself get distracted by other enchanting ideas. You can add more habits in the future once the first one is more firmly established.

11. Use proven habit building strategies

Habits work on a predictable cycle:

  • cue (the trigger)
  • routine (the established behavior)
  • and reward (the benefit from the routine)

If you can recognize and redirect the  habit cycles  that drive your own routines, you have a much better chance at changing them successfully.

12. Manage your motivation

Even with the best habit cycle in place, you'll need a degree of motivation to persist through inevitable low points. Your reasons to continue have to outweigh your reasons to stop.

If you find your motivation is slipping, use some of these strategies to  boost self motivation .

13. BONUS: Learn habit building strategies that Suit You

There's another book in the achievement genre that has actually been extremely helpful to me — Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin.

The book is written around the premise that were are all different, so different types of habit building strategies will work for different types of people.  It shows you how to use practical, actionable strategies that suit you and work with your natural inclinations, not against them.

If you want to take a more comprehensive look at habit building, I think you'll find a lot of value in the strategies that are taught in Better Than Before

Research juried art shows & studio tours

If you're new to selling at craft fairs, January might seem shockingly early to start planning for shows that won't happen for another 6-11 months.

Many shows open up the application process several months in advance. If you want to start selling at a few craft shows this year, you need to start planning sooner rather than later.

14. Find craft shows & studio tours that interest you

Your local arts association or crafts guild will be an excellent resource for finding shows in your area. They probably even publish an annual  craft show directory  for your area. 

15. Note important deadlines and application requirements

A craft show directory is a great starting point for finding shows in your area, but occasionally craft show directories contain mistakes. When you check deadlines, go directly to the show's website so you can be sure you're getting important information directly from the source.

Important craft show dates include:

  • when applications will be available / the first day you can submit your application
  • the application deadline
  • when those who are accepted will be notified
  • booth fees due date
  • show date(s)

While you're checking deadlines, you can also look for other important information about the craft shows that interest you such as:

  • organizer contact information
  • how to apply
  • where to get an application
  • application requirements (be sure to check the requirements for product and booth photos)
  • show location
  • any unusual show rules
  • information about past show attendance if available
  • any information available about types of vendors (e.g. Is the show for handmade items only? Are there limits on the number of vendors allowed in each category?)

All of that information will help you to  assess each craft show  and decide which ones you'd like to attend. 

Art studio tour  organizers also typically start accepting applications for both spring and fall tours quite early in the year. If you think you might like to participate in your local studio tour, start your research now. Your arts association will have information about that event as well.

16. Get fabulous photos of your products

Your product photography can make or break your craft show application. Whether you hire a pro or take the photos yourself,  craft product photography  is no place to cut corners in your juried art show applications, particularly if you're applying to more competitive shows or if you're applying to a competitive category like jewelry or painting.

You might not need to start your applications in January. That will depend on the deadlines for shows you'd like to attend.

Just don't wait until the last minute to  apply to juried art shows  that interest you. Complete your applications thoroughly, carefully, and in a timely manner.

18. Plan to attend as a customer if you won't be a vendor

There may be shows that interest you but you can't attend this year because you're not ready for them, or you were not accepted. Put those show dates in your calendar, and plan to attend them as a customer if at all possible.

You'll be able to check out the vendors, see whose booths are full of paying customers, and learn what works so you'll be ready to apply to those shows in coming years.

Yes, you heard that right. Amazon now has an entire Category dedicated to Handmade products . Earlier made by hand products were mere meta tags of their other categories. But now the company works with independent artisans to promote their craft.

The craze of handcrafted items is trending. Thus, it makes sense to start a handmade business .

If you ended up reading this article through a search engine. Then, I am sure your mind must be brimming with handmade products business ideas .

For craftsmen, the concept of doing a digital business is nerve-wracking. The idea of putting a handmade shop online overwhelms them.

So, to make the process simple. I have listed the 3 step process in starting a handmade business.

Decide on your craft

Much like starting any business. You must know what is it that you are going to sell. Since a handmade business involves making crafts. So, you must be capable of creating those crafts. Because, unlike other businesses. In a handmade business, you cannot drop ship or outsource your manufacturing. Deciding what to craft should be an easy question to answer. You must be either making those crafts or have a passion to learn to make them. 

If you are into multiple crafts. Then, instead of getting into all of them at once. You can niche down to those that are high in demand . Till you do not get to this part. You cannot move ahead and start your handmade products business. It is the individual craftsman’s skills that set them and their business apart. If you want inspiration to pick up a craft. Prepare a Business Plan

Creating a business plan is a mandatory prerequisite for starting a handmade business. Many artists selling crafts from home ignore this one. Irrespective of the type and size of the business, a business plan is a must. I also shied away from making one when I started my business. However today, I do not even dream about starting one without a business plan. Most of the business plan formats available online for free appear complicated. That is why I have devised one myself that is super simple to begin. It has 7 components. By the time you fill them all up. You will end up more confident about starting a handmade business.

As you can see, there are a mere 7 parts to fill in this handmade business plan .

Once you have zeroed in on your chosen craft and the name of your business. Then, you can move on to the other details step-by-step. 

  • Summarize Your Business

You must try to fill in this information as precise as you can. That is why I insist on 7 words or less. So, if you intend to have a woodworking craft business. Then, a few options can be –

The better you get in your business. The easier it will be to sum up your handmade business description .

  • List Your Handmade Items

A successful business requires a thorough understanding of financials. Therefore, you must fill up this one with the utmost accuracy.

As a newbie handmade business. It is prudent to prepare your financials for 6 months. That period is good enough to change your strategy in case the current one does not work.

1.      Expenses

You must sum up all your possible expenses in this one. So, you can include –

  • Price of raw materials
  • Listing fee of an online marketplace for handmade items
  • Expenses of showcasing at a craft fair
  • Expenses of your website/ store
  • Operational, marketing, and logistics costs

2.     Expected Revenue

The amount you think you will be able to earn in the next 6 months.

The time frame you think it will take your revenue to cover up your expenses.

Irrespective of the size, location, and the niche of your handmade business. You have to market it to bring in an audience to view your products. Because marketing converts those audiences into prospects. Those prospects then turn into customers.

There are many marketing ideas for craft business . But if you wish to stick to a simple schedule. Then, you can do the following:

  • Blog With a Purpose

Blogs are the important tools to connect the buyers with the sellers and vice-versa. That is why every handmade business must have its own self-hosted website with a blog . Many artists procrastinate to start a blog. Or some of those take the wrong step by blogging on free platforms. It is frustrating to know that both these situations will not help much. The technical aspect of starting a handmade business blog is not complicated. Nor does it cost a lot. In fact, you can start one for less than 50$ a year and that too in the next 15 minutes. Once you get into the groove of blogging with a purpose to expand your business. Then, it will put you and your business to places far and wide. It will attract buyers as well as give you a chance to get featured in some handmade business magazine too.

  • Distribute Your Handmade Business Cards

Along with taking your handmade business digital . You also have to capture the offline market.

To achieve that purpose, you can enable your marketing material with a QR code. That way your physical promotional material can also direct people to your website.

  • Use Social Media to Your Advantage

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden slapped major new tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, advanced batteries, solar cells, steel, aluminum and medical equipment on Tuesday, taking potshots at Donald Trump along the way as he embraced a strategy that’s increasing friction between the world’s two largest economies.

The Democratic president said that Chinese government subsidies ensure the nation’s companies don’t have to turn a profit, giving them an unfair advantage in global trade.

“American workers can outwork and outcompete anyone as long as the competition is fair,” Biden said in the White House Rose Garden. “But for too long, it hasn’t been fair. For years, the Chinese government has poured state money into Chinese companies ... it’s not competition, it’s cheating.”

The tariffs come in the middle of a heated campaign between Biden and Trump, his Republican predecessor, to show who’s tougher on China. In a nod to the presidential campaign, Biden recognized lawmakers from Michigan in his remarks and spoke about workers in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, all battleground states in November’s election.

Asked to respond to Trump’s comments that China was eating America’s lunch, Biden said of his rival, “He’s been feeding them a long time.” The Democrat said Trump had failed to crack down on Chinese trade abuses as he had pledged he would do during his presidency.

Karoline Leavitt, the Trump campaign’s press secretary, called the new tariffs a “weak and futile attempt” to distract from Biden’s own support for EVs in the United States, which Trump says will lead to layoffs at auto factories.

The Chinese government was quick to push back against the tariffs, saying they “will seriously affect the atmosphere of bilateral cooperation.” The foreign ministry used the word “bullying.”

The tariffs are unlikely to have a broad inflationary impact in the short term because of how they’re structured, some not to take effect until 2026, but there could be price increases in the meantime for EV batteries, solar and some other specific items.

Biden administration officials said they think the tariffs won’t escalate tensions with China, yet they expect China will explore ways to respond to the new taxes on its products. It’s uncertain what the long-term impact on prices could be if the tariffs contribute to a wider trade dispute.

The tariffs are to be phased in over the next three years, with those that take effect in 2024 covering EVs, solar cells, syringes, needles, steel and aluminum and more. There are currently very few EVs from China in the U.S., but officials worry low-priced models made possible by Chinese government subsidies could soon start flooding the U.S. market.

But it drives well and is put together with craftsmanship that rivals U.S.-made electric vehicles that cost three times as much. Chinese firms can sell EVs for as little as $12,000 . China’s solar cell plants and steel and aluminum mills have enough capacity to meet much of the world’s demand, with Chinese officials arguing their production keeps prices low and would aid a transition to the green economy.

China’s commerce ministry said in a statement that the tariffs were “typical political manipulation” as it expressed its “strong dissatisfaction” and pledged to “take resolute measures to defend its rights and interests.”

Under the findings of a four-year review on trade with China, the tax rate on imported Chinese EVs will rise to 102.5% this year, up from total levels of 27.5%. The review was undertaken under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the government to retaliate against trade practices deemed unfair or in violation of global standards.

Under the 301 guidelines, the tariff rate is to double to 50% on solar cell imports this year. Tariffs on certain Chinese steel and aluminum products will climb to 25% this year. Computer chip tariffs will double to 50% by 2025.

For lithium-ion EV batteries, tariffs will rise from 7.5% to 25% this year. But for non-EV batteries of the same type, the tariff increase will be implemented in 2026. There are also higher tariffs on ship-to-shore cranes, critical minerals and medical products.

The new tariffs, at least initially, are largely symbolic since they will apply to only about $18 billion in imports. A new analysis by Oxford Economics estimates the tariffs will have a barely noticeable impact on inflation by pushing up inflation by just 0.01%.

The Chinese EV maker BYD has explored the possibility of opening factories in Mexico for the Mexican market, possibly creating a way to ship goods into the United States. U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai said she was talking with industry and workers about the possibility and to “stay tuned.”

The auto industry is still trying to assess the impact of the tariffs. But at present, it appears they could be assessed on only two Chinese-made vehicles, the Polestar 2 luxury EV and potentially Volvo’s S90 luxury gas-electric hybrid midsize sedan.

“We’re still reviewing the tariffs to understand exactly what’s affected and how,” said Russell Datz, spokesman for Volvo, a Swedish brand now under China’s Geely group. A message was left seeking comment from Polestar, which also falls under Geely.

The Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, said the U.S. is trampling on the principles of a market economy and international economic and trade rules.

“It’s a naked act of bullying,” Wang said.

The Chinese economy has been slowed by the collapse of the country’s real estate market and past coronavirus pandemic lockdowns, prompting Chinese President Xi Jinping to try to jumpstart growth by ramping up production of EVs and other products, making more than the Chinese market can absorb.

This strategy further exacerbates tensions with a U.S. government that claims it’s determined to strengthen its own manufacturing to compete with China, yet avoid a larger conflict.

“China’s factory-led recovery and weak consumption growth, which are translating into excess capacity and an aggressive search for foreign markets, in tandem with the looming U.S. election season add up to a perfect recipe for escalating U.S. trade fractions with China,’’ said Eswar Prasad, professor of trade policy at Cornell University.

The Europeans are worried, too. The EU launched an investigation last fall into Chinese subsidies and could impose an import tax on Chinese EVs.

After Xi’s visit to France last week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that government-subsidized Chinese EVs and steel “are flooding the European market” and said, “The world cannot absorb China’s surplus production.’’

Biden’s administration views China, with its subsidies of manufacturing, as trying to globally control the EV and clean-energy sectors, whereas the administration says its own industrial support is geared toward ensuring domestic supplies to help meet U.S. demand.

“We do not seek to have global domination of manufacturing in these sectors, but we believe because these are strategic industries and for the sake of resilience of our supply chains, that we want to make sure that we have healthy and active firms,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said.

The tensions go far beyond a trade dispute to deeper questions about who leads the world economy as a seemingly indispensable nation. China’s policies could make the world more dependent on its factories, possibly giving it greater leverage in geopolitics. At the same time, the United States says it’s seeking for countries to operate by the same standards so competition can be fair.

China maintains the tariffs are in violation of the global trade rules the United States originally helped establish through the World Trade Organization. It accuses the U.S. of continuing to politicize trade issues and on Friday said the new tariffs compound the problems caused by tariffs the Trump administration previously put on Chinese goods, which Biden has kept.

Those issues are at the heart of November’s presidential election, with a bitterly divided electorate seemingly united by the idea of getting tough with China. Biden and Trump have overlapping but different strategies.

Biden sees targeted tariffs as needed to defend key industries and workers, while Trump has threatened broad 10% tariffs against all imports from rivals and allies alike.

Biden has staked his presidential legacy on the U.S. pulling ahead of China with its own government investments in factories to make EVs, computer chips and other advanced technologies.

Trump tells his supporters America is falling further behind China by not betting on oil to keep powering the economy, despite its climate change risks. The ex-president may believe tariffs can change Chinese behavior, but he believes the U.S. will be reliant on China for EV components and solar cells.

“Joe Biden’s economic plan is to make China rich and America poor,” he said at a rally this month in Wisconsin.
