Intense, captivating, and distinctive.

Twelve-year-old Ash wakes in an unfamiliar room with an IV in his arm, a head full of jumbled memories, and a host of superhuman abilities. He has no idea what he is capable of, but if he is going to save the world, he needs to evolve.

With the lead scientists locked in quarantine, it is up to mixed-race (Indian/white) Ash to track a group of criminals intent on releasing a deadly virus into the world. Unfortunately, a dense jungle full of terrifying creatures is between the biosphere where he is being kept and the getaway boat. Thankfully he meets Isabel, a Costa Rican girl familiar with the dangers of Isla Negra. Drawing upon her local knowledge and what he’s learned from his scientist mother and his memories of his deceased soldier father, Ash and Isabel begin their journey. They quickly learn there are more deadly things hiding on Isla Negra than the bizarre fauna and the deadly flora. This fast-paced adventure features both a reluctant hero and an intelligent and capable heroine. With an island full of impossible creatures and new dangers around every corner, there are few lulls in this high-stakes race.

MY BROTHER'S SECRET

BOOK REVIEW

by Dan Smith

MY FRIEND THE ENEMY

THE WILD ROBOT PROTECTS

From the wild robot series , vol. 3.

by Peter Brown ; illustrated by Peter Brown ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 26, 2023

Hugely entertaining, timely, and triumphant.

Robot Roz undertakes an unusual ocean journey to save her adopted island home in this third series entry.

When a poison tide flowing across the ocean threatens their island, Roz works with the resident creatures to ensure that they will have clean water, but the destruction of vegetation and crowding of habitats jeopardize everyone’s survival. Brown’s tale of environmental depredation and turmoil is by turns poignant, graceful, endearing, and inspiring, with his (mostly) gentle robot protagonist at its heart. Though Roz is different from the creatures she lives with or encounters—including her son, Brightbill the goose, and his new mate, Glimmerwing—she makes connections through her versatile communication abilities and her desire to understand and help others. When Roz accidentally discovers that the replacement body given to her by Dr. Molovo is waterproof, she sets out to seek help and discovers the human-engineered source of the toxic tide. Brown’s rich descriptions of undersea landscapes, entertaining conversations between Roz and wild creatures, and concise yet powerful explanations of the effect of the poison tide on the ecology of the island are superb. Simple, spare illustrations offer just enough glimpses of Roz and her surroundings to spark the imagination. The climactic confrontation pits oceangoing mammals, seabirds, fish, and even zooplankton against hardware and technology in a nicely choreographed battle. But it is Roz’s heroism and peacemaking that save the day.

THE WILD ROBOT ESCAPES

CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS AND THE TERRIFYING RETURN OF TIPPY TINKLETROUSERS

From the captain underpants series , vol. 9.

by Dav Pilkey & illustrated by Dav Pilkey ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 28, 2012

Is this the end? Well, no…the series will stagger on through at least one more scheduled sequel.

Sure signs that the creative wells are running dry at last, the Captain’s ninth, overstuffed outing both recycles a villain (see Book 4) and offers trendy anti-bullying wish fulfillment.

Not that there aren’t pranks and envelope-pushing quips aplenty. To start, in an alternate ending to the previous episode, Principal Krupp ends up in prison (“…a lot like being a student at Jerome Horwitz Elementary School, except that the prison had better funding”). There, he witnesses fellow inmate Tippy Tinkletrousers (aka Professor Poopypants) escape in a giant Robo-Suit (later reduced to time-traveling trousers). The villain sets off after George and Harold, who are in juvie (“not much different from our old school…except that they have library books here.”). Cut to five years previous, in a prequel to the whole series. George and Harold link up in kindergarten to reduce a quartet of vicious bullies to giggling insanity with a relentless series of pranks involving shaving cream, spiders, effeminate spoof text messages and friendship bracelets. Pilkey tucks both topical jokes and bathroom humor into the cartoon art, and ups the narrative’s lexical ante with terms like “pharmaceuticals” and “theatrical flair.” Unfortunately, the bullies’ sad fates force Krupp to resign, so he’s not around to save the Earth from being destroyed later on by Talking Toilets and other invaders…

Book Review | Boy X by Dan Smith

Boy X sang to me from the teen shelf of my library bus. I thought of all those years I miss the letter X off my Alphabet reading challenge.  As I walked home with it, I realised I’m not doing titles this year, but authors. And I’ve already got a Smith!  Never mind, it gives me a green cover for my Colour Coded Challenge , and a book towards my Great Middle Grade Reads challenge.

Kidnapped and drugged, Ash wakes up on a remote tropical island. His mum – a genetic scientist – has been imprisoned and infected with a deadly virus. Where is he, and what’s he doing there? He sets out to cross the jungle to find out and rescue his mother. Soon he realises he’s quicker and sharper than before. But there’s something else …why are the animals watching him, and how can he use the jungle to his advantage? [ goodreads ]

This was a mercifully quick read (after Revelation Space ). As the blurb says, we meet Ash on a tropical island. We also discover he’s raw from the recent death of his dad, and mum seemed curiously reticent about the circumstances.  Of course, he thinks it’s all his fault.

A helicopter crashes into the strange Biosphere he’s in, and shuts it off from the outside world. Running from people who seem to mean him harm, Ash finds his way into the lab. He notices his senses are strangely enhanced… His feet, which he cuts on broken glass, heal within a few hours.

Fortunately, he finds a companion his own age who is looking for her father. They join forces to track down the only people who can help them, before someone else sinister tracks them down to stop them.

Babble versus chatter

By now you understand that everyone who said this is an exciting adventure is right. Yet I found the language stilted at first; was I reacting to my previous read? The writing is pacy, often by using very short sentences. I think an author must strike a balance between short sentences for easy reading and just short sentences.

Later I think the easy reading element gets lost in the adventure. That twists, and turns, and then throws in a double loop back.  But early on, the author injects plenty of detailed description of the jungle, its dangers, and the smells which assail Ash until he learns how to use his enhanced senses.  Unfortunately, I found much of this description clunky, sometimes repetitious, and with plenty of clichés I wanted to crawl away from (although the spiders and ants were excellent). ‘The sound of a babbling stream chattered somewhere out of sight.’ Babble versus chatter, discuss. Yuk.

There’s quite a lot of violence at the end, with the kids fighting the grown-ups with highly offensive weapons. This might have some people twitching – but they’re baddies, so I suppose it’s all right?

I really want to thank Dr Emu for saving my marriage. My wife really treated me badly and left home for almost 3 month this got me sick and confused. Then I told my friend about how my wife has changed towards me. Then she told me to contact Dr Emu that he will help me bring back my wife and change her back to a good woman. I never believed in all this but I gave it a try. Dr Emu casted a spell of return of love on her, and my wife came back home for forgiveness and today we are happy again. Good day,,,, Read my testimony!!! Getting ex back after a breakup. Am Clara Bartlett 30 from UK, my boyfriend of a 2year just broke up with me and am 28 weeks pregnant. I have cried my self to sleep most of the nights and don’t seem to concentrate during lectures sometimes I stay awake almost all night thinking about him and start to cry all over again. Because of this I end up not having energy for my next day’s classes, my attendance has dropped and am always in uni and on time. Generally he is a very nice guy, he ended it because he said we were arguing a lot and not getting along. He is right we’ve been arguing during the pregnancy a lot. After the break up I kept ringing him and telling him I will change. I am in love with this guy and he is the best guy I have ever been with. I’m still hurt and in disbelief when he said he didn’t have any romantic feelings towards me anymore that hurt me faster than a lethal syringe. He texts me now and then mainly to check up on how am doing with the pregnancy, he is supportive with it but it’s not fair on me, him texting me as I just want to grieve the pain and not have any stress due to the pregnancy. i was really upset and i needed help, so i searched for help online and I came across a website that suggested that Dr Ahmed can help solve marital problems, restore broken relationships and so on. So I felt I should give him a try. I contacted him and he told me what to do and i did it then he did a spell for me. 22 hours later, my boyfriend came to me and apologized for the wrongs he did and promise never to do it again. Ever since then, everything has returned back to normal. I and my boyfriend are living together happily again.. All thanks to Dr Ahmed. as it is a place to resolve marriage/relationship issues, do you want to be sure if your spouse is being faithful to you or Do you want your Ex to come back to you? Hello my husband took my case to court for a divorce. he said that he never wanted to stay with me again, and that he didn’t love me anymore. So he packed out of the house and made me and my children passed through severe pain. I tried all my possible means to get him back, after much begging but all to no avail and he confirmed it that he has made his decision and he never wanted to see me again. So on one evening as i was coming back from work i met an old friend of mine who asked of my husband. So i explained every thing to her so she told me that the only way i can get my husband back, is to visit a great spell caster called Dr Ahmed utimate, who has really worked for her too to get her husband. So i never believed in spell but i had no other choice than to follow her advice. Then she gave me the email address of the spell caster, So the next morning i sent a mail to the address she gave to me and the spell caster assured me that i will get my husband back the next day. What an amazing statement!! I never believed so he spoke with me and told me everything that i need to do. Then the next morning So surprisingly my husband who didn’t call me for the past seven months gave me a call to inform me that he was coming back. So Amazing!! So that was how he came back that same day with lots of love and joy, he apologized for his mistake and for the pain he caused me and my children. Then from that day our relationship was now stronger than how it were before, So i will advice you out there if you have any problem contact Prophet Dr Ahmed utimate he is real and always ready to help you solve your problem Email him at: [email protected] or call/whatsapp: +2348160153829

Boy X by Dan Smith

When Ash McCarthy wakes up in some sort of medical facility he immediately knows something is wrong. But he doesn't suspect just how much until he steps outside and finds himself on a remote tropical island. Then he smells the blood and begins to find the bodies. A deadly virus has been released and, to make matters worse, it's being taken off the island to be sold as a weapon that could wipe out humanity. The antidote is being taken with it and, unless Ash can stop them within 24 hours, everyone on the island who has been infected (including Ash's mum) will die.

This is a powerful fast-moving thriller that hooks the reader from the four dramatic single word sentences that open the story. The reader is immediately on edge and desperate to know where Ash is and how he will escape.

The plot moves on at pace with constant action that will keep readers turning the pages. This is not, however, at the expense of characterisation. Ash has a fully developed backstory and a rounded personality. I particularly liked the references to his dad through his personal mantra ( I am Ash McCarthy. I am strong. I can do this ), the fact Ash is scared of heights, and his confused emotions towards his mum's work.

Ash shares his adventure with the daughter of one of the facility's lead scientists, Isabel, and I was pleased to find a strong female character. While her bedroom reveals her to be a typical teenager, Isabel also understands how to survive in the rainforest and is an accurate shot with a rifle. Ash may save her life a couple of times but it's clear he won't be able to succeed without her.

The plot may be slightly far-fetched at times but I was more than happy to suspend my disbelief and, as a lover of this teen-action adventure genre, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There is a hint of a possible sequel and I am hoping that author, Dan Smith, does follow this up. I would definitely be first in line to buy a copy of any subsequent adventure. In fact, I plan to go and check out Dan Smith's other books.

If you enjoyed this, you'll also enjoy the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz – start with Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz . There are also clear parallel's with Horowitz's Power of Five series of which Necropolis (Power of Five) by Anthony Horowitz is my personal favourite. Alternatively, if you'd prefer a standalone adventure, try Car-Jacked by Ali Sparkes . You might also enjoy Below Zero by Dan Smith .

Five years after Luke Perry’s death, a new look at the Gen X bad boy

Margaret wappler’s ‘a good bad boy’ looks back on a life that was both extraordinary and, for a celebrity, remarkably uneventful.

Long before Taylor Swift may or may not have folded herself into a suitcase to avoid the paparazzi, Luke Perry hid in a laundry hamper to avoid a frenzied mob of teenage girls in a mall department store in Bellevue, Wash.

In May 1991, in what came to be known as the Bon Marché incident, a publicity appearance by Perry, star of the hit Fox show “Beverly Hills, 90210,” went sideways, writes pop culture journalist Margaret Wappler in her hybrid biography-memoir, “ A Good Bad Boy: Luke Perry and How a Generation Grew Up .” The crowd swelled to 20,000, by some estimations, and quickly spiraled out of control. Several fans were injured, and the junior section had to be evacuated.

When a similar incident happened later in Florida, Perry apologized (“I want all those people out there to know that it wasn’t my fault, for one”) and phoned most of the injured young fans in the hospital, because that was the sort of thing Luke Perry did.

It is impossible to overstate the influence of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” watched by 20 percent of American teenagers during its early-’90s peak. A soapy, supremely watchable drama about teens at the fictional West Beverly Hills High that was unafraid to tackle then-third-rail issues like teen sex, eating disorders and sexual assault, it belongs on the Mount Rushmore of Gen X culture alongside Nirvana and John Hughes.

Perry, who played brooding, attractively damaged Dylan McKay , complete with a Porsche and a decidedly un-’90s pompadour, was the show’s breakout star, a phenom among phenoms, as much of an icon of his time as Leo DiCaprio or Harry Styles.

Like everyone else in the show’s core cast, Perry (23 when the show first aired in 1990) was a 20-something who looked like a 30-something playing a teenager. His sideburns and famous “corrugated forehead wrinkles” heightened the effect.

Out of two unrelatable archetypes — rich guy and James Dean-like rebel — Perry fashioned a solemn, soulful character somewhere between a hero and an antihero, “the platonic ideal of the sensitive man hiding his wounds behind a shield of cool,” writes Wappler.

“A Good Bad Boy,” its release tied to the fifth anniversary of Perry’s death from a stroke at 52 , chronicles Perry’s small-town Ohio childhood; his struggling-actor era, when he toggled between roles on soaps like “Loving” and manual-labor jobs; his vertiginous rise to teen idol-dom; and its bruising aftermath. His “90210” audition went badly, a former girlfriend of his recalls to Wappler. Perry was in the car to the airport headed back home, possibly done with acting for good, when the call came that he had landed the part.

Luke Perry came full circle, from heartthrob rebel to sensitive dad

Although no one in Perry’s immediate family would consent to be interviewed for the book, nor would any of his “90210” co-stars, “A Good Bad Boy” doesn’t necessarily suffer for it. Wappler relies on existing interviews with Perry and firsthand accounts from old friends, roommates, ex-lovers and co-workers.

According to those interviewed, Perry was a doting father to two children and a potbellied pig named Jerry Lee. He was a gentle lover and a good listener who never lost his Midwestern humility. His presence helped bring close friend and former co-star Jason Priestley out of his coma after a car crash . He punched Tori Spelling’s bad-news boyfriend in the face at the annual Spelling Christmas Eve party, much to the delight of his castmates. He was a doer of good deeds who spent time with dying fans and unhoused people. He could calm strangers’ crying babies. “He seemed pure,” writes Wappler. His fellow actors adored him. “He was somebody who I could look to as an oracle,” claimed his “ Riverdale ” co-star Madelaine Petsch.

Perry left “90210” after Season 6 and struggled to avoid typecasting (“I’m going to be this guy forever,” Perry once correctly predicted). He landed recurring roles on “Oz” and “Riverdale,” and, in one of his last performances, played a television cowboy in “ Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ” for Quentin Tarantino, who was a fan.

The book’s portrayal of Perry can veer dangerously close to cardboard sainthood. Wappler does her best, despite being robbed of a biographer’s most useful tools: Perry’s life was both extraordinary and, for a celebrity, remarkably uneventful, light on madness, scandal, substance abuse or famous love affairs, though he did briefly date Yasmine Bleeth.

“A Good Bad Boy” knits together intimate reminiscences from Wappler’s own difficult adolescence, young adulthood and marriage with an unavoidably more distant recounting of Perry’s life. The biography and autobiography are told in alternating chapters, which makes it difficult to get any narrative momentum going. As a memoir, it’s raw and frequently moving. As a Luke Perry primer, it’s not definitive, but it’s as empathetic as you’re likely to find, a moving meditation on his life and the still-unthinkable strangeness of his absence.

Allison Stewart writes about pop culture, music and politics for The Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune. She is working on a book about the history of the space program.

Review: Boy Kills World Offers a Bloody, Action-Packed yet Messy Feature Film Debut Starring Bill Skarsgård

boy x book review

It feels like it’s based on a comic book; the visuals make me think it might be based on a video game. But in fact, Boy Kills World , the feature debut from filmmaker Moritz Mohr, is an original idea based only on his own short film of the same name. Somehow, that short was enough to convince producer Sam Raimi to come on board, and as a result, Mohr got himself a helluva cast to star in this revenge story set in a post-apocalyptic world in which a corrupt and murderous family rules over the land (whatever land that may be).

A ripped Bill Skarsgård stars as a deaf-mute character known only as Boy, whose family was slaughtered when he was a boy (played by twins Nicholas and Cameron Crovetti) by Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen), the matriarch of the aforementioned family that has an annual event called The Culling, in which citizens deemed nonessential are unceremoniously killed. The Boy was especially close to his younger sister, Mina (Quinn Copeland), and he’s especially pissed off about her death, so he’s spent his entire life training under a mysterious shaman (Yayan Ruhian) to become a one-man killing machine, proficient in martial arts and all manner of weaponry. Boy can’t speak, but he is driven by an inner voice (specifically the voice of his favorite combat video game announcer, provided by the great H. Jon Benjamin) that urges him to kick every ass that gets in the way of his revenge goal.

When his training is finally complete, he runs into a couple of resistance fighters also looking to put an end to the Culling—Andrew Koji’s Basho and Isaiah Mustafa as Bennie (in a strange twist, although Boy can read lips almost flawlessly, something about Bennie makes it impossible to understand what he’s saying, which makes for some very funny miscommunications). It’s around this time that Boy also starts seeing visions of his little sister, who advises him, frequently argues with him, and even makes him question his mission for reasons that become clear as the film goes on.

We eventually meet the rest of the Van Der Koy family, including daughter Melanie (Michelle Dockery), her husband Glen (Sharlto Copley), and brother Gideon (Brett Gelman), all of whom are vying for power as mother Hilda seems to be losing her grip on reality—or so they think. They also have in their employ their own instrument of death, a helmet-wearing enforcer known as June 27, who is the only character in the film whose skill set seems to equal Boy’s. At no point does the film let up in terms of pacing, nor does it spare us anything in the blood-and-guts department. Parts of this film are positively brutal, mostly in a humorous way, but a little of this goes a long way—and there’s way more than a little of this here.

Boy Kills World feels like a fever dream most of the time, which allows the filmmaker to address issues of identity, memory, trauma, and the healing power of carnage. There are action sequences that are delirious and jaw-dropping; there are others that are pure mayhem and, as a result, confusing. And the final fight among three of the main characters (I’m not revealing which ones) gets so gory by the end, there should be no one left alive from all the blood-letting. At points, the film feels like more of an endurance test with an emphasis on sensory overload, but there are admittedly moments that are a great deal of fun.

Skarsgård’s frequent look of bewilderment and confusion goes a long way, and Benjamin’s voice in general (in animation stalwarts like Dr. Katz , Archer , and Bob’s Burger ) just makes me laugh more often than not in any situation. Other parts of the film are deeply annoying, especially Dockery and Gelman, who are overplaying their villain parts to such a degree I wish they had been the ones who had their tongues ripped out. Far from a great movie, Boy Kills World is probably the best of the action offerings currently in theaters, so I guess you could do worse—put that on the poster.

The film is now playing in theaters.

Dead Boy Detectives review: A sweet and silly supernatural drama

Netflix expands the sandman universe with this delightful ya series.

George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri in Dead Boy Detectives

In case the title wasn’t enough of a hint, Dead Boy Detectives wastes no time establishing its paranormal setting. There are demons, possessions, World War II and Victorian-era spirits, an evil witch, a larger-than-life snake, a glowing squid, and magical mirrors galore in the first episode alone. Netflix’s drama, which premieres April 25 , also makes its connection to The Sandman clear as day. Kirby Howell-Baptiste reprises her role as Death in a far-too-brief cameo to remind audiences of the streaming platform’s budding Neil Gaiman universe. So, yes, DBD has an oversaturated beginning. But after that, it thankfully settles into a delightful, surprisingly sweet rhythm.

Related Content

Developed by The Flight Attendant ’s Steve Yockey, the show is immensely enjoyable once it finesses the tonal goofiness and character dynamics. What else did you expect when the comic book source material is equally beguiling? There are bumps along the way, but the eight episodes (which, to be honest, feel a tad long) have enough heart to make up for it. The credit goes to the core relationship between the “dead boys,” ghosts Edwin Payne (George Rexstraw) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri)—their exchanges are often aww-inducing—and the friends they make while running a detective agency for supernatural crimes.

The two leads will look different to anyone who saw the Doom Patrol season-three episode in 2021 that introduced Edwin and Charles. Back then, they were played by other actors (Sebastian Croft and Ty Tennant) with plans for the pair to lead a spinoff. Max then canceled Doom Patrol , with Netflix acquiring that follow-up, Dead Boy Detectives . But don’t worry, despite minor tie-ins, watching Doom Patrol or The Sandman isn’t a prerequisite to devouring this new series, which stands on its own two feet.

Rexstraw and Revri are a wonderful duo even if they look nothing like high schoolers. In a drama full of bizarre plot twists, portals to dimensions, a murderous sea creature, and a walrus who turned into a man, the greatest suspension of disbelief here is that both protagonists are teenagers. This also applies to their castmates Kassius Nelson and Yuyu Kitamura. It takes away from Dead Boy Detectives ’ youthful appeal, as these characters come up as four full-blown adults, not adolescents having major experiences for the first time. That said, the co-stars develop a naturally warm camaraderie onscreen.

But back to the show’s setup: Edwin and Charles have been dead BFFs for decades, trying not to get dragged into Hell. When DBD begins, their bond appears to be well-defined, but the script finds incredible new ways to deepen it. Are they just friends? Do they have romantic feelings? Where is their chemistry going? As these questions bubble up, it allows Rexstraw and Revri to layer their performances beyond the initial descriptors of Edwin being uptight and Charles acting as his lighthearted counterpart.

The pair meet a psychic named Crystal (Nelson) who loses her memory after a demon invasion. In trying to figure out her identity, she becomes a de facto member of their cute little agency, using her clairvoyance to help their ghostly crime-solving. The London trio gets stuck in a small town in Washington, U.S., with Crystal’s new roommate, Niko (Kitamura), and landlord, Jenny (Briana Cuoco), joining the bandwagon. The group’s affectionate friendship is the biggest draw of the show, maintaining the momentum during narrative lulls.

As for the cases, Dead Boy Detectives has a fascinating procedural setup. They untangle new mysteries in each episode—a serial killer in a time loop, a fishy siren, jock-bro murder victims, and dragons, to name a few—that are gripping to varying degrees. At least the sets, visual effects, and Tony Wohlgemuth’s creepy production design commendably aid the scope. And DBD boasts one of the most fun opening credits of the year. However, the overall stakes feel lower with unserious recurring villains, played by Ruth Connell, Jenn Lyon, and Lukas Gage, although the latter’s persona of the Cat King is effectively endearing.

The series isn’t flawless, but it is ridiculous in the right way. And as with other Gaiman adaptations like Good Omens and Lucifer , genuine emotions lie under the veneer of eccentric, awkward comedy and situations. (The ending of episode five is a lovely example of this.) The show is sure to please fans of the author’s work as well as those of escapist YA sci-fi along the lines of Netflix’s dearly departed Lockwood & Co . Let’s just hope Dead Boy Detectives , which nicely sets up a potential second season,   doesn’t bite the dust too.

Author Dan Smith turns up the heat in his latest YA novel, Boy X. Fully loaded with action, adventure, and bordering the line of sci-fi, this book doesn't hold back on the suspense. 4. Book Review

I think an author must strike a balance between short sentences for easy reading and just short sentences. Later I think the easy reading element gets lost in the adventure. That twists, and turns, and then throws in a double loop back. But early on, the author injects plenty of detailed description of the jungle, its dangers, and the smells ...

  5. The Book Zone: Review: Boy X by Dan Smith

The main protagonist of Boy X is another young teen boy who suddenly finds himself way out of his depth in a fight for survival against highly trained villains who are armed to the teeth. However, poor Ash McCarthy does not have the local knowledge advantages that Oskari had in Big Game: at the beginning of the book he wakes in a strange laboratory with no knowledge of why or how he got there.
