How to Write a High Band IELTS Essay on Hobbies

To score an excellent band in the hobbies essay IELTS poses, follow the below-mentioned tips:

• Inculcate strong vocabulary, and make sure your sentences are perfectly structured.
• Provide good examples for each reason or supporting argument that you present. Whenever possible, follow this pattern: topic sentence for paragraph giving a good idea about the reason you are stating, followed by a brief explanation, then an example, and finally wrapping it up with a concluding sentence.
• Manage your time well so that you have some spare time in the end to proofread your essay and correct any mistakes.

What sets apart a high band essay from a relatively low scoring essay is the overall structure of the essay, how you have linked one paragraph with the other, your vocabulary and grammar, and the quality of examples you have provided. So, make sure to work on each aspect before sitting for the final exam.

Here are two sample answers that will guide you on getting a high band score in the hobbies theme essay for IELTS Writing Task 2.

Question: Few people devote time to hobbies these days. Why do you think this is the case, and what effect does this have on an individual and society in general? You should spend around 40 minutes on this task and write at least 250 words in the essay.

Answer: Nowadays, there are only a handful of people who pursue a hobby with due diligence. In my opinion, this is not a positive development and can have many disadvantages for the individual and society in general. Leisure activities can be the much-needed relief from the bursts of high-level energy to cope with today’s highly competitive world. They not only keep you fit and healthy but also contribute towards society’s development. The paucity of time and introduction of alternative means of spending one’s free time are the top two causes for the declining number of people engaging in hobbies today. Demanding jobs and a tough education system make it harder for people to take time out and engage in recreational activities like gardening, dancing, yoga, etc. Additionally, with the new streaming platforms, social media applications, and online gaming communities, people often find themselves on the internet in their spare time rather than stepping out for some simple hobbies. The surge in demand for data and the rising number of online users serve as testament to this statement. With the absence of physical activities comes direct and latent consequences like deteriorating physical health leading to issues like obesity and declining mental health as a result of feeling alienated from society. The individual and the society suffer on account of these effects on physical health, mental health, and community building. For instance, as people increasingly choose the company of their smartphones over their friends and other members of society, they feel increasingly alone and start getting out of shape, as observed by some social scientists at the University of Los Angeles. To conclude, not interacting with others while engaging in hobbies has had a rather negative impact on individuals and society consequently. People should thus be encouraged to step out more and participate in various hobbies within their community to ensure they are in good health and instill in them a strong sense of belonging for the society.

Question: Some people are of the view that hobbies need to be difficult for people to be able to enjoy them well. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above statement? Write your answer with a minimum of 250 words and give relevant examples.

Answer: While some hobbies are fairly easy to pursue, others are more difficult to perform and pose a challenge for the individual. However, in my view, it is wrong to establish a correlation between the level of difficulty in performing a leisure activity and the enjoyment (or the recreation value) derived from that hobby. Some people truly find pleasure in easy hobbies like swimming. Such activities do not require a very high level of expertise to perform them and can be completed without putting a lot of strain on their physical health. However, that does not mean that swimmers do not like the activity as much. Another example of such hobbies can be people who like to go bird-watching. This is not a difficult hobby per se, but it still serves the purpose of recreation for the individual partaking in it. In contrast, sometimes, more challenging and difficult hobbies can be thrilling. These hobbies can be more rewarding and more satisfying in the end because the person goes through more challenges to reach the endpoint. For instance, video editing and filmmaking are two rather challenging hobbies that can be very rewarding for some people and, thus, more enjoyable. Therefore, in conclusion, I believe that both kinds of hobbies, easy and difficult, can be pleasurable for an individual depending on their preferences. Hence, it is wrong to state that one type of hobby is more enjoyable than the other simply because it is more challenging. The hobbies essay IELTS often presents can be very easy to tackle and should be written in coherence with the statement given and the question asked. However, to score a good band, you should follow a well-structured format like the ones given above in the sample answers.

Is It Important To Have a Hobby? IELTS Speaking (10 Example Answers)

The examiner in your IELTS Speaking test might ask you about hobbies in part one. If they do, one question could be, “Is it important to have a hobby?”

This is also a possible question for part three. But in this article, let’s think about a good part-one answer. Below, you can also see 10 example answers ( go straight to the answers here ).

What You Can Say About Hobbies

If you do think hobbies are important, just explain why they’re important with one or two short sentences.  

Here are some things you might talk about:

•   Hobbies keep people happy
•  Hobbies keep us entertained
•   Hobbies help people to learn new things and grow
•   Hobbies teach useful skills
•   Hobbies help you to make new friends
•   Hobbies teach you to use your mind or body
•   Examples of hobbies
•   Explain how a hobby has helped you and your life

If You Don’t Think Hobbies Are Important

In this case, you can say why hobbies aren’t important and try to say why you think that.    

You might talk about:

•   How people you know don’t have hobbies and don’t need them
•   Anything else you can think of

Quick Tip: Talk About Yourself

In part one, you want to answer quickly. And in Part 1, you can talk about yourself.  

So for a part-one question like this, quickly think about one example in your own life. This is the easiest thing to talk about.

Just say one hobby you have and why it is important to you (or not).

That will be a great answer.

Keep It Short

You only need to talk for 10 or 20 seconds in your part-one answers.  

Don’t try to keep talking and talking. That can actually hurt your score.

Use the three-step YES Method to answer part-one questions like this.  

For the YES Method, you just say:

•   Y our answer (‘yes, hobbies are important’ or ‘no, they’re not’)
•   E xplain your answer (say why you think that, with one or two sentences)
•   S top talking (wait patiently for the next question)

Focus on Fluency

In part one, focus on fluency : speak smoothly and quickly, without hesitation.

Don’t try to think of clever vocabulary to use. That will slow you down.

You can use clever vocabulary in part two when you have more time to think.

‘Yes, I Do’ Answers

1. Yes, I do. I think hobbies are very important because they keep us happy and entertained. Life without hobbies would be very boring.

2. Yes. To my mind, hobbies are important because we can learn new skills for life with our hobbies. For example, DIY is a useful hobby. Swimming and dancing are useful hobbies too.

3. Yes, I think everyone needs a hobby because it’s the best way to make friends. I love shopping, for example. And I go shopping with my friends all the time.  

4. Yes, I do. Of course hobbies are important. We need hobbies to improve our minds and challenge ourselves. For example, I love playing complicated card games, which are tricky to learn but lots of fun.

5. Yes, I reckon hobbies are essential for enjoying life. I’ve been playing soccer since I was very young. I play every weekend with my friends. And it makes me very happy.

‘No, I Don’t’ Answers

6. No, I don’t. I don’t think hobbies are very important because I don’t have any hobbies and I’m perfectly happy. I just spend my time working or relaxing with my family.  

7. No, I don’t think hobbies are very important. I think it’s nice if you have one, but it’s not necessary to enjoy life.  

8. No, I don’t. Most of my friends don’t have hobbies, because we’re too busy with work. In my opinion, making money is more important than playing around with games and sports.

‘Kind Of,’ Answers

9. I suppose hobbies are pretty important if you have time for them. I used to enjoy playing computer games with my friends. I guess that was my hobby. But these days I’m too busy for it.  

10. Well, I think hobbies are kind of important. You need to do fun things in life, and hobbies are meant to be fun. But I don’t think hobbies are as important as family and friends and things like that.

Ielts writing task 2 – hobbies and interests change.

Popular hobbies and interests change over time and are more a reflection of trends and fashions than an indication of what individuals really want to do in their spare time. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

( 266 Words , 14 Sentences, 4 Paragraphs, Band 9)

Some leisure activities become fashionable for a short time and then disappear when a new trend comes along, whereas others seem to be perennially popular. I can therefore only partly agree with the assertion that hobbies reflect changing fashions rather than our true interests.

On the one hand, it is true that many hobbies are simply passing trends. Children and teenagers, in particular, are attracted to whatever activity is currently popular among their peers. My 10-year-old niece, for example, seems to have a new interest every month, as she joins in with the latest craze that sweeps through her primary school. Over the last year or so, she has been obsessed with Rubik’s cubes, fidget spinners, squidgies and slime. In a similar way, there have been several different fitness trends for adults over recent years, from jogging to yoga to circuit training, and I doubt whether the majority of participants continued to enjoy those activities in the long term.

On the other hand, many people spend their free time doing popular activities that are far from trendy. One good example would be the game chess. Children and adults who enjoy playing chess are certainly not following a new fashion or wasting their time on something that they do not truly like. On the contrary, they are passionate about a game that has existed for hundreds of years, and they find it inherently fascinating and absorbing. I would say the same about many other hobbies, from reading to swimming.

In conclusion, Following trends and fashions or not, it is up to people. They choose the most suitable things for themselves.

Hobbies and are different for everyone; this is the human nature, . The current generations are very much in the latest trend which makes them happy and also them to make more money. For example, cricket is the most famous game in , children and playing it whenever they have free time in their daily life. This makes them become a star in this game when they reach a certain age in their life. In addition, this popularity will help them to make lots of money in their life. , there are many .

Those aiming to spend more time to make money rather than on their own interests. However, some of them are not about the popular hobbies and interests. For instance, drinking alcohol is one of the popular hobbies low income and .

In conclusion, spending more time popular hobbies and interests really depends on their . It may to become a star in their life or time with many friends.

Avoid statements such as ‘This essay will explain the reason’, your essay should present a point of view including supporting information and examples. The essay needs to be easy to follow, and in addition your English should be accurate and appropriate.

I suggest that you read several essays that have been awarded high band scores and think about how those writers have structured their essays.

Questions to Ask Someone About Their Hobbies

The first thing you need to understand is the question someone could ask you about your hobbies or interests.

There are several ways someone could ask you this question so let’s take a look at them.

• What do you like to do in your free time?
• Do you have any hobbies?
• What are your interests?
• What do you like doing at the weekend?
• What do you like to do?

First, I should tell you I am from England and English people rarely use the word ‘hobbies’. It sounds a little old-fashioned these days. People often use the word ‘interests’ to replace hobbies.

So it could be any of the above questions.

I think these are fairly simple to understand.

How to Reply

But there is a larger range of ways of replying to these questions.

People usually indulge in their interests in their free time or spare time. This is a time when we are not working or studying. Often it could be at the weekend and in the evenings.

So one by one we can use these phrases like this:

In my free time, I like to…

• In my free time, I like to play football
• In my free time, I go swimming
• In my free time, I prefer to read

At the weekend I like….

• At the weekend I like to go fishing
• At the weekend I like cooking
• At the weekend I like to do the gardening

I like to …

• I like to go dancing
• I like to make wine
• I enjoy drawing
• I enjoy hiking

I am into …

(This means that you like something very much)

• I am into comics
• I am into website design
• I’m into gaming

When I have the time, I like to …

• When I have the time, I like to go walking
• When I have the time, I like to take photographs

I’m interested in…

• I’m interested in tropical fish
• I’m interested in local history

Examples of Hobbies

Each country has its own culture and therefore the people will have different interests and hobbies. Some of these interests are universal such as playing the piano, going to the gym or drawing. But many others are unique to the country itself.

Below is a selection of typical interests and hobbies in England.

Go through all of these hobbies and interests and look the words up in a dictionary.

Does your country share any of the same hobbies as above?

Make a list of interests that people in your country like to do in their free time. Write a few sentences about each one if you can.

Talking About Interests in Detail

When we talk about our interests, there are two things we can do.

Describe what the hobby is

And then say why you like it

So, for example, someone who likes football might say something like this:

I like to play football at the weekend with my friends. We have a small club and we get together and play a game of football. Nothing serious just for fun, really.

But we like it because it is good fun and we can all have a laugh together plus it is good exercise and gets us out of the hous

In the first sentence, the speaker says what the interest is, when he does it and who with. He then goes on further to explain that he and his friends are members of a small local football club.

He says that is it  Nothing serious just for fun really  — this means that no one takes the football club very seriously. They are not trying to be professional football players. They just want to have some fun.

He then goes on to explain why they do it. He repeats that it is fun and they can  all have a laugh together  — this is another way to say that it is good fun. Then he mentions that playing football is good exercise — another reason why he plays football.

And lastly he says it  gets us out of the house  — this means that it is good to leave the house. Staying indoors all day is considered an unhealthy thing to do.

Let’s look at another example.

I am an avid reader and every weekend you can find me with my nose in a book. There is nothing I like better than curling up with a good book in my favourite armchair and losing myself in whatever world the book is set in.

I love reading because I can enter other worlds and meet all these amazing characters. I love seeing all of the scenes play out in my imagination.

This speaker talks about her deep interest in reading.

She says she is an  avid reader  — this means she loves reading and has a very strong desire for reading.

She goes on to say that  every weekend you can find me with my nose in a book —  this means that if we were to find her we could see her reading. She also uses the phrase  curling up with a good book in my favourite armchair , to describe in more detail her love for reading. She likes to sit in an armchair curled up in a ball so that she is comfortable.

The speaker mentions  the world the book is set in  because the setting in the book is not like the real world.

She then explains why she likes reading and talks about  other worlds ,  amazing characters  and  seeing all the scenes play out in her imagination .

This is what you need to do when talking about your hobby or interest.

You need to go into deeper detail of what the interest is and where and when you do this hobby. And are you alone or with friends?

Then talk about why you like it. Try to think of three reasons why you like this special hobby of yours.

Like Doing vs Like To Do

We often use these two phrases when talking about our interests and hobbies. Or to describe things we like to do or things we like doing.

Like + gerund – I like swimming

Like + infinitive – I like to swim

Loosely speaking, you can use either of these expressions. Each one has the same meaning.

How to Talk at Length About Your Hobbies

If you are asked about your hobbies in the IELTS test for Part Two, then you will have to talk about your hobby or interest at length. The same if you are asked this question in an interview for college or a job interview.

You need to think about how to talk about the things you like to do and how to speak for a long time. This is where all the English question words can help you.

Think about the question words  what ,  where ,  when ,  why ,  who  and  how .

What  – I like to paint

Where  – in my shed in the garden

When  – at the weekend and whenever I have spare time

Why  – I just lose myself in the moment, it is very relaxing and time just flies by

Who  – by myself it is a very solitary hobby

How often  – whenever I can!

And then you can put all of this together and it might look like this:

I like to paint in my free time. I can’t paint in the house because my parents say it is too messy, all the paint and oil, so I use the shed in our garden. I can sit in there and no one disturbs me.

I usually paint at the weekend and after school, I like to paint whenever I have some spare time.

I like painting because I can just lose myself in it, I just get lost in the moment and forget time completely. It is very relaxing and time just flies by very quickly.

I like to spend time on my own and paint. I like to be able to think and be quiet. I like to be on my own and think.

I try to paint whenever I can but I have exams coming up so I don’t have as much free time any more. But after my exams, I will probably get back into it.

Now you try.

Use all the question words and ask yourself questions about your hobby or interest. Interview yourself about your hobby and when you have all the answers put them together into one long talk.

Then recite it out to yourself.

Describe Feelings About the Hobby

First of all, let’s look at some words we can use to describe how we feel about something in English.

I think you probably know how to use these words to describe general emotional states you might have on different days, but you can also use them when talking about your interests.

Let me show you how.

We played a game of cricket against another local team but we lost terribly. I was kind of angry even though it’s only a game. I just felt frustrated because we had practiced for so long.

Our band played live for the first time last week. We were all really nervous, but it went pretty well. I think we were all surprised by how much the crowd liked us.

 get frustrated with my efforts sometimes when I am doing pottery. I look at the results and think it looks terrible but then I remind myself that I am still learning.

If I spend too much time on my own, I get lonely so it’s nice to meet the others in our choir and practice two or three times a week.

You can use many of the words above to describe how you feel about your hobby and how it makes you feel when you are doing it.

Try to use all the words above and the examples and make your own sentences.

Describe your feelings about your hobby and how you feel when you are doing it.

Describe Opinions About the Hobby

Here are some useful phrases you can use to describe your opinion about your interest.

You can use these to express opinions about your interest.

Let’s look at some examples:

In my opinion, doing yoga is a very good thing to do. It can really help you relax and we all need to do that in modern society.

Personally speaking, I think that cooking is a very useful hobby. After all, everyone needs to eat and everyone likes to eat delicious food.

I really believe that going to the gym can help you live a long and healthy life. As we get older we need to have more strength to do daily things in our life.

As far as I’m concerned, doing carpentry is a very rewarding and satisfying hobby. I have made some really beautiful chairs and a bookcase for our home.

You could be asked to talk about your hobbies or interests in Part Two of the IELTS speaking test. Or in an interview for college or a job interview.

In this situation, you will need to talk at length about what you like to do in your free time.

The important points to remember are:

• To talk about the hobby in detail
• And say why you like it — you should try to give three reasons if you can

But also do the following:

• Describe your feelings about the interest — how do you feel when you do it?
• Describe your opinions about it — the more opinions you have the better
• And to tell a story about it

If you can cover some of these points, then you should give a very solid answer when talking about your hobbies and interests.
