In this short essay, the author describes her brother’s personality and hobbies and how he’s such a wonderful person. She acknowledges that they sometimes argue and fight, but at the end of the day, she considers him her hero and forever companion. 

“I believe that siblings are the best addition to life. Without a doubt, siblings can be annoying and petty, but with all of the bickering and not so witty banter, they love with all their heart.”

Alexandra remembers the first time her parents took her baby brother home. She then details how her brother helped her connect with others, know how to compromise, and love someone else. Over the years, she realized that everything he taught her made her life more enjoyable. 

“I used to think of disappointment as losing one of my Barbie dresses… But I realized that disappointment can stem from the person you love the most… I don’t dislike my little brother and sister till this day. They’re still my little superstars and I hope I can be a good enough big sister to them.”

Mc Collum starts her essay by narrating how much she wants to have a sibling. But, as an only child, she finds it lonely and boring. She then recounts the events of when her dad introduced her little brother to her as a surprise. She follows it by describing her mixed feelings about meeting the baby, mainly because her father already had another child with another woman. 

Instead of focusing on her little brother, she shares her disappointment with her father. It took her some time, but she now accepts her younger siblings because they aren’t at fault for what their father did. Mc Collum concludes her essay by stating that she doesn’t want to be a victim and does her best to overcome her frustration with her father.

“For me, losing my brother almost three years ago still saddens me… Losing someone is hard to accept, remembering him is easy, I do it everyday.”

The writer shares her pain at how she lost her brother, best friend, and right hand due to an overdose. She tells of how much they spent time together and how he was always there to protect her.

She further explains how hard it is to move on when she remembers him every day and still wishes he was there with her. Her brother’s death made her try to make the best of everything and trust God. 

“Having a twin brother is a blessing and a curse. He is always there for me and I always have a friend to talk to, but a majority of the time he pushes my buttons invades my personal space and gets on my nerves.”

Peretti discusses his thoughts on how he initially loved being a twin until it gradually took away his character because no one could tell him apart from his brother. It took him a while to realize that people only react the way they do because they don’t understand what he feels. They don’t have a twin, after all.

Peretti then strived to be a better person and embraced being a twin. He ends the essay by realizing his struggles with his brother made him the best version of himself.

The Best Lesson My Older Brother Taught Me

Reflections on the love and rivalry between siblings upon reading Prince Harry’s memoir, Spare.

Growing up, my big brother, Nick, and I played something we called The Punting Game. It started when we lived in Los Angeles, in the early nineties. We’d both wear full football uniforms, complete with helmets. As if to enhance our sibling rivalry, I, four years old at the time, would wear the black-and-silver uniform of the Los Angeles Raiders. Nick, three years and nine months older, and so quite a bit bigger at the time, would wear the blue-and-yellow of the Los Angeles Rams. In my memory, Nick and I would stand on opposite sides of the yard and he would punt a football to me. (According to Nick, my dad was the one doing the punting.) My objective was to catch the ball, evade Nick, and run to the other side of the yard. Nick’s objective was to tackle me. Seems fair enough—until you consider that our yard was not very big, and these punts arced high and hung in the air long enough that I often collected the ball just in time to be flattened. I don’t remember ever getting to punt. I do remember getting tackled—a lot.

This was as it should be: I am the little brother. No little brother is above performing the duties of the younger boy in a two-boy household—not even one born into a family that is personally ordained by God to rule over a kingdom. I’m speaking, of course, about Princes Harry and William. In his recently released memoir, Spare , Prince Harry recalls just how early the little brother-big brother dynamic was etched into his relationship with William. “I was twenty the first time I heard the story of what Pa allegedly said to Mummy the day of my birth,” he writes. “ Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an Heir and a Spare — my work is done .” Apocryphal or not, it’s clear that a chasm stood between the two boys that only grew wider as they got older, coloring everything they did—even their royal roughhousing. Harry reveals that the boys engaged in tussles with friends that often concluded with him having to come to William’s rescue. “When the scrap finally ended for good, when we hobbled away together, I always felt such love for him, and I sensed love in return, but also some embarrassment,” he writes. “I was half Willy’s size, half his weight. I was the younger brother: he was supposed to save me, not the other way around.”

Harry spends most of Spare waiting for his brother to save him: from the angry ink and invasive flashbulbs of royal-hungry British tabloids; from the deep, shared grief over the loss of their mother, Diana, in 1997; from a family that neither welcomes nor accepts his American wife, Meghan Markle. But saved he was not. Instead, Harry claims, his brother was responsible for conflict, betrayal, and a growing list of (rather petty) slights: Prince William and Princess Kate mad that Harry and Meghan Markle didn’t get them Easter presents; William upset that Harry would not shave for his wedding; a row between Kate and Meghan about bridesmaids dresses; an argument between the brothers over who would have the sole responsibility of philanthropic work in Africa during which William said, writes Harry, that “Africa was his thing.”

Reading Spare , I couldn’t help but refract its descriptions of brotherhood through my own experience. My brother and I are not best friends, but we have a very solid, healthy relationship as men in our mid-thirties. Why did we make it out of the big brother-little brother dynamic without the scar tissue that seems to pain Harry and William? How do any brothers make it out of that innate heir-spare hierarchy?

It is something of a ridiculous question, given the key differences between two princely dudes and two brothers who are actual princes. Nick and I never fought over Africa. As far as I know, no one ever publicly speculated about whether we were circumcised (as the press once did about the princes). And, of course, neither of us was ever going to be king. The only throne we ever debated over was who got to ride shotgun. But, as it was with Harry, there was an element of always following in my brother’s footsteps. His nickname was “Skip,” so I was “Little Skip.” We went to the same schools—though never at the same time, since he was four grades above me—and played the same sports. Truth be told, I never really resented following in his wake. If his shadow loomed large, it also provided me with some cover: teachers and coaches who’d had him seemed almost predestined to like me. Nonetheless, his presence was always hanging there, even in his absence—at least until I went off to college and began blazing a path of my own.

For Harry, even leaving the nest didn’t save him from the infantilizing brotherly dynamic. In Spare , Harry recalls a memory from April 2006, during the “passing out” ceremony following graduation from his military training at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. William was also at Sandhurst, but behind Harry in training because he had spent time getting a degree from St. Andrews. Thus, as Harry marched past, William was forced to salute. “He couldn’t resort to his typical attitude when we were sharing an institution, couldn’t pretend not to know me—or he’d be insubordinate,” writes Harry. “For one brief moment, Spare outranked Heir.” It’s a telling anecdote. Because even though, later in the book, Harry tries to downplay this dynamic—”most of the time Willy and I didn’t have any truck with all that Heir-Spare nonsense”—it’s clear to this little brother that his second-born status is what defines him. It’s the title he chose for his memoir!

Unfortunately, it’s also the only way his brother can see him. Which is perhaps why, in another moment in the book, when William comes over to tell Harry that Meghan is “rude” and “abrasive” and that he must “do something about it,” the two brothers, both in their thirties at the time, resort to the brute score settling of their boyhood. According to Harry, William knocked him off his feet and ripped his necklace. “He seemed put upon that I wasn’t meekly obeying him, that I was being so impertinent as to deny him, or defy him,” Harry writes of the moments before it turned physical. “There was a script here and I had the audacity not to be following it. He was in full Heir mode, and couldn’t fathom why I wasn’t dutifully playing the role of the Spare.”

Nick and I are around the same age now as Harry and William were when they had that encounter. I can’t remember the last time we had an argument, let alone laid hands on each other. That could be because I’ve never upset him by dating Meghan Markle, but I assume it’s likely because of something much simpler: respect. “I’d always viewed you as a little brother,” Nick said, when I called him up to talk about this essay. “But then, at some point, it clicked, like, Oh, you’re actually a real person now .” In a weird way, as we’ve gotten older and started to lead our own lives, my brother and I have only become closer, and become more real to one another. When he got married, he asked me to be his best man, something neither Harry nor William did for each other. It felt like another step in us seeing each other as adults, and as men. Reflecting on that made me realize that, sometimes, the most brotherly thing a brother can do is to let you be something other than his brother.

In Spare , William is always trying to keep Harry in his place, constantly reminding him of the royalty’s rules, the big brother turned Big Brother. “The monarchy, always, at all costs, had to be protected,” Harry writes ruefully. The epigraph at the beginning of the book is from Faulkner: “The past is never dead. It’s not even the past.” Reading it and all that follows, it’s hard not to feel like Harry will only and forever be that kid in one of the most indelible images of him, the one that introduced him to the public: 1997, during Princess Diana’s funeral, the tiny boy walking next to his much bigger brother. If there’s a tragedy here, it’s not that William and Harry had a royal falling out as brothers—it’s that they could never be anything but.

Akash is a very bright young kid in his playschool. All the teachers love him, and he has many friends. He is a calm boy but can also become very enthusiastic while playing games. His best friend is his classmate Aanya who is also our neighbour. When not with me, he plays with her.

On weekends my parents take us out to the mall. He loves to eat ice cream or anything sweet. I love my brother, but sometimes he fights with me when I don’t share my toys. But after every fight, we always say sorry to each other and become best friends again. My brother is a blessing to our family as he makes us all happy.

Essay writing is an essential exercise for your child to learn how to think and express their ideas coherently. Introduction:

Not many of us are blessed or lucky enough to have an elder brother who is always our pillar of strength and support.

However, I am very fortunate enough to have an elder brother to whom I could turn around for all my needs at any point of time.

A very strong and supportive person, yet very authoritative too, he is. I just love him, no matter what.

My Big B and me:

We are just two siblings and I am the youngest to my parents. Right from my childhood, my brother has always been my Hero and will always continue to be too. I have always looked upon him for all the things that I do. He is so organized, systematic and has great values and I learn all these values from him. Though many at times, we do fight and quarrel, he is the best. One minute we fight like cats and dogs and the next minute we are so much in reunion that I have seen my mom stare at us in surprise!!

We have had big and small fights. Sometime our fights just last for a few minutes, but at other times we literally fight very badly and may take some time to get reunited. Though he is good at all other things, he is very short-tempered and this leads to fights most of the time. But when he is in good mood, we do play a lot many games and he does makes for me so many small toys that I just love and treasure.

These were all that we used to do as kids. As we grew, our bonds got stronger and stronger, and today he is my best pal. A person, in whom I could confide anything that I want to, is my elder brother. Whenever I have a problem, it is my brother to whom I run first for help. He always has a solution to all my problems.

As time passes by, we have been distanced in our journey called life, in search of our life destinations. However, no matter where we are, we know that we are there for each other and distance have never been a boundary, when we need each other. He has always been by my side at every stage of my life and still continues to be.

No matter how old we may grow or how far we may be, he will always be my Big Brother and I would still remain as his one and only little sister. A brother is blessing which makes you sure that, all through your life, you have a strong shoulder to lean on and wide open arms with a tight hug to comfort you , through all your tested times. I love my brother and he is ‘The Best’, anybody could ever dream off.

I have a younger brother. His name is Kevin, and he is 8 years old. He is a class 3 student of St. Paul school. He is an intelligent child who also excels in sports. Badminton is his favourite sport. He has won many medals in his school’s badminton championships. He is a jolly kid who is loved by everyone. After coming back from school, we both play together.

Our favourite indoor game is Carom. Evenings are always fun with him. His funny gestures make everyone happy. Being the youngest member of the family, he is the apple of everyone’s eyes. Kevin hardly gets angry. However, once a friend of mine was mocking me, and Kevin came to my rescue. That was an instance when he was furious.

His thoughtfulness makes him a wonderful person. He is the sweetest younger brother. I honestly cannot imagine growing up without him. Kevin has many friends. In school, he has always been popular.

However, he loves to spend time alone. At home, I would often catch him reading comic books. He also likes to draw cartoons. He loves to watch animated movies. Finding Nemo is his favourite movie.

His other hobbies include gardening. Kevin has always been a gentle kid. He has a caring personality. While watering the plants, he would often sing a lullaby. Besides this, he loves eating tasty food.

We always go to the nearby store and get ice creams. He also is a big fan of chocolates. The relationship between my brother and me is deep and special.

It only grows stronger with time. There are occasional fights and arguments. But at the end of the day, Kevin and I always look after each other. Having my little brother in my life is an amazing gift.

Recalling how she and her two sisters handled their brother’s tragic death, Cindy confessed: “We knew that my dad really wanted a boy, and we felt like, well, it should have been one of us.”

Cindy Crawford has opened up about the devastating impact that her younger brother’s death had on her and her sisters in childhood.

The former supermodel, who is now 58 years old, spoke candidly about suffering from “survivor’s guilt” during a recent appearance on the Kelly Corrigan Wonders podcast.

For context, Cindy’s mom was just 16 years old when she got pregnant with the star’s older sister, Chris. Two years later, Cindy was born, and her little sister Danielle and their baby brother Jeffrey were born four and two years after her. 

Jeffrey was diagnosed with leukemia when he was just 2 years old, which he fought for two years before tragically passing away.

On the podcast, Cindy explained that knowing that her dad had always wanted a son made her and her sisters feel like it should have been one of them who got sick instead of their brother.

Recalling Jeffrey's diagnosis, Cindy said: “I was 8, my older sister would have been 10, my younger sister would have been 4, and Jeff was 2, turning 3, when he got diagnosed, and then he was sick for two years.”

Cindy added that while their mom made a four-hour roundtrip to the hospital with Jeff every day, their father worked to pay for his treatment, and she and her sisters spent a lot of time with their aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

“We had enough extended family around us that I didn’t really feel it, as a kid… We knew that he was sick, but we didn’t really know what was going on,” she shared. “When he died, obviously that was devastating for the whole family.”

“My mother, she was able and chose to really grieve properly; she went to death and dying courses, and she has a very strong faith, so she was able to move through grief,” Cindy continued. “I think, for my father, he had to go to work three days later, and so they just handled it very differently.”

Reflecting on how she and her sisters reacted, Cindy said: “[My parents] wanted a boy, my dad wanted a boy, the fourth was a boy, and I think there was a lot of guilt.”

“There’s that survivor’s guilt of the other kids,” she went on. “Especially because we knew that my dad really wanted a boy, and we felt like, well, it should have been one of us. It was so weird. For years, my sisters and I would all have these same nightmares that it should have been one of us.”

“My mom wouldn’t have known to say this, she was 26 years old and had just lost a child, but I needed to hear: ‘Yes, we’re so sad that Jeff died, but we’re so happy you’re here,’” Cindy explained. “Through doing the work on myself, I was able to ask my mom to say that now, as an adult, just to kind of close the loop on that feeling.”

Cindy also reflected on the way that society as a whole approaches death, saying: “I remember when I went back to school after my brother died and not one person said anything to me except for one kid, who was like: ‘I saw in the paper your brother’s dead, is that true?’ And I was like, whoa . It was so in your face, but he didn’t know what to say — we were in third grade!”

The star later acknowledged that becoming a mom herself made her realize just how tough losing Jeffrey must have been for her mother.

In fact, Cindy said that when she gave birth to her first child at 30 years old, she called her mom up and asked her how she had possibly survived the death of a child.

“You can’t imagine losing a child until you have a child, and even then, you don’t want to imagine it,” Cindy explained. “But I remember her saying: ‘Well, I had three other kids looking at me to lead them through this.’ And I think, because of us, she got out of bed and had to do what she had to do.”

Cindy is mom to 24-year-old Presley Gerber and 22-year-old Kaia Gerber , who she shares with her husband, Rande Gerber.

When my son tried to talk to him the situation went from bad to worse, and now they are not speaking.

I have texted Charles a few times and sent him a card for his birthday but have gotten no response. My brother remarried a few years ago. He has become more isolated since then. I believe his actions, so out of character, are a combination of his wife’s influence and possibly some mental health issues. I wrote him a note telling him that I love him and will always be here if he needs me or wants to reconnect, but got no response to that, either.

At this point I have decided to continue to send cards for special occasions, but to stop trying to reconcile and respect his choice to cut us out of his life. Should I do more than that?

Dear Amy: My fiancé and I are getting married this summer.

I’m from a very small family. I have one sister and very few cousins. Our dad died and we don’t have any male family members I feel close to. I asked my mom to walk me down the aisle to give me away, but she doesn’t want to do this. Now I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to walk down the aisle alone.

Do you have any ideas?

Bride: I wonder how you might feel about walking down the aisle hand-in-hand with your future husband. I think the whole “giving the bride away” concept is antiquated — because you aren’t anyone’s property — but this is also a symbolic joining of two families, and having a family member walk you down the aisle would fulfill this symbolism. If you and your fiancé don’t want to do this together, you could ask your sister to accompany you.

Dear Amy: Thank you for telling “ Living a Lie ” to come clean about his lack of military service. My late husband worked at the National Archives in St. Louis for 15 years. He told of many letters sent by folks trying to claim their late relative’s many medals. Many times he had to report that there was no history of military service, or that their relative had totally fabricated or inflated their service. Families were devastated.

Marion: “Living a Lie” reported that he wants to spare his son this experience.
