- Detailed discussions of all the key techniques and skills
Why RSL Materials Are Special
Our mission is simple: to publish the best exam preparation materials in the UK.
RSL books mimic the exam papers of many schools, but also - more importantly - they walk young people carefully through the skills that they need to learn.
Students have the best possible chance of understanding how they can improve and why.
Every exam paper is accompanied by extensive solution sheets with model answers (at least one per question), and thorough discussions of the techniques needed.
The RSL Method
After many years of teaching, as a private tutor and in the classroom, I realised that I had been giving the same exam preparation advice to student after student: but I had never seen a book which explained these ideas.
I also realised that one of my core teaching techniques - working on a paper alongside a student, comparing my answers with theirs and discussing how our work could be improved - offered the perfect structure for a book. The child could learn from the example answers, but also find fault with them, spotting things that they could do better.
This is why RSL materials sometimes offer clearly-indicated bad answers alongside good ones, why they give at least one example solution for every question, and why everything is discussed and explained.
It's also why our materials are outstandingly popular with parents and teachers.

- Why RSL Awards?
Crafted by industry experts and continuously updated to align with the ever-evolving sector, our Creative and Performing Arts qualifications equip learners with industry-relevant skills that prepares them for the demands of the Creative Industries.
Our Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) qualifications offers a number of pathways such as Performing & Creating, Performing Arts Business & Production, Dance, Acting, or Musical Theatre. Choose from a wide array of units covering various industry specialisms, allowing learners to refine their skills and apply them in a practical way.
“I love teaching the CAPA acting route. The course is fit for purpose and creates meaningful opportunities for learners. It gives you freedom as a teacher to adapt the delivery to the students strengths. I feel it really prepares them well for life post 16, whether they continue with a career into performing arts or not!”

Pathway Information
Creative and Performing Arts Levels 1-3 (non-performance tables) is split into two main pathways: Performing and Creating and Performing Arts Business and Production. Each pathway embodies a specific profile of study and this informs the core unit choices, which you are guided to make. Learners will be led by centres when choosing the pathway options available to them, and the units within their chosen pathway.
At Level 3 you have the option to run qualifications that contribute towards Department for Education performance measures. These Tech Levels qualifications give the learner a choice of three pathways: Acting, Dance and Musical Theatre.
Pathway Profiles
- Non Performance Tables (Levels 1-3)
- Tech Levels (Level 3)
The aim of the two pathways is to equip learners with various industry relevant skills, ranging from basic knowledge at Level 1 through to nearing professional capacity at Level 3. Those on the Performing and Creating pathway will have opportunities to demonstrate their acting, musical theatre and dancing skills. Those on the Performing Arts Business and Production pathway will have opportunities to demonstrate their skills in wider areas of the creative arts industry (e.g. marketing, PR, artist development, publishing, set design, lighting, set construction, sound and wardrobe).
The pathways offer the opportunity to undertake specialised learning that can be accurately matched to specific career sectors in the creative and performing arts industries. Centres with learners looking to pursue the following occupations can use the below pathways to select the units that would be advantageous to their learner’s career.
Note that the occupations below are simply an example and the below pathways can also be used to further other career paths.
Performing and Creating Pathway
- Actor / Presenter / Entertainer / Comedian / Acting Teacher
- Choreographer / Dancer / Dance Teacher
- Musical Theatre Performer / Singer / Songwriter / Recording Artist / Musical Theatre Teacher
Performing Arts Business and Production Pathway
- Promotion / Management / Agent / Advertising / Arts Administrator
- Costume Designer / Lighting Technician / Make-up Artist / Prop Maker / Scriptwriter / Set Designer / Stage Manager / Director / Wardrobe Assistant
- Live Music Producer / Audio-visual Technician / Broadcaster Engineer / Cinematographer / Sound Engineer / Video Editor
Our Tech Awards in Creative and Performing Arts (Level 3) enable the practical application and development of skills and knowledge within a chosen pathway of Acting, Dance or Musical Theatre. RSL’s Vocational Qualifications provide a proven technical alternative to A Levels.
Learners will:
- Perform effectively
- Rehearse and display acting skills
- Initiate and develop repertoire
- Understand contextual issues relating to acting styles, theatrical genres and the performing arts industry
- Rehearse and display dance skills
- Understand contextual issues relating to dance styles, performance genres and the performing arts industry
- Rehearse and display musical theatre skills
Unit Information
- Non-performance Tables (Level 1–3)
Non-performance Tables
RSL Creative and Performing Arts qualifications consist of two types of unit:
- Core (mandatory) units, chosen for their relevance to the overall qualification
- Optional units (including skill units and borrowed units at Level 3).
All of the units in this qualification suite are internally assessed — staff in centres provide assessment opportunities for, and assess the work produced by, learners.
Tech Levels
The qualifications consist of three types of unit:
• Externally assessed core units • Internally assessed core unit • Optional units
Externally assessed core units The externally assessed core units are mandatory units. These externally assessed units require learners to work to a brief, set with input from industry practitioners (employers), specific to their area of specialism.
Internally assessed core unit All learners undertake the internally assessed core unit, Planning for a Career in the Creative and Performing Arts.
Optional units Learners can choose from a selection of pathway specific optional units to make up a programme, which qualifies for the chosen qualification.
Example Unit Selection
The work of a specified playwright.
The aims of this unit are to develop basic research skills in looking at a notable playwright, to introduce learners to the works of the playwright and to enable learners to develop and perform extracts of the playwright’s work.
Acting Workshop
The aim of this unit is to introduce learners to the practical workshop environment, establishing typical structure and safe practice in this activity.
Stand-Up Comedy
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to understand the basic requirements of stand-up comedy and to prepare learners for a simple performance in a small-scale venue, using a microphone.
Branding, Marketing and Promotion
The aim of this unit is to ensure that learners not only understand what brands are, but also core marketing and promotion concepts in order to analyse key brands in a chosen area of the creative arts.
Creating Digital Content
The aim of this unit is to introduce learners to the importance of digital content in developing careers, driving sales and building fan bases. Through creating examples of digital content to appeal to their fan base or consumer and promote artist, event or product identity, learners will understand how they can create content of their own to develop their careers.
Live Performance
The aim of this unit is to give learners the opportunity to explore the skills required for a live performance. These range from planning, rehearsing and performing, to the reflection required post-performance to ensure continual development as performers.
Ensemble Dance Performance
This unit aims to introduce the learner to a selected dance genre and develop their ability to perform fundamental technical movements with a group. The learner will develop some genre specific sequences as well as gain an understanding of the background and history of the genre.
Rhythm and Tap
The aim of this unit is to introduce the learner to basic rhythm and tap movement skills and how to use these skills to create a sound and dance performance. The purpose of the unit is to provide learners with the skills to understand basic rhythms and the use of props and movements to make heard rhythms, and to develop their understanding and enjoyment of these areas.
Musical Theatre Performance
The aim of this unit is to introduce learners to ‘acting through song’ in musical theatre. The purpose of this unit is to introduce learners to musical theatre works and develop relevant performance skills, integrating singing, acting and movement/dance.
Creating Digital Music
The aim of this unit is to introduce learners to readily available and highly functional digital audio workstation (DAW) and sequencing packages in order to inspire them to create new sounds, manipulate existing audio files, record and mix their own music. Its purpose is to ensure that artists are introduced to some of the digital audio technology available to musicians today.
Songwriting
This unit aims to introduce learners to the conventions and history of various genres of contemporary and popular song, through which they can construct their own ideas using a given brief.
Makeup and Prosthetics
This unit will introduce the learner to makeup application for theatre and film/video. The learner will understand the collaborative process in creating a production and how the makeup artist fits into the production team.
Starting a Business in the Arts
The aim of this unit is to introduce learners to some core creative industry sectors and the types of business start-up that could be successful. It then covers some of the fundamentals of business planning to engage learners in activities such as identifying areas for business development, financial planning, marketing and company structures.
Cinematography
This unit will introduce the learner to the work of a camera operator on a film/video shoot. Learners will explore the collaborative process of film making, and will understand how the members of a production team work together to plan and execute a project. Learners will be introduced to light and colour theory and motion picture photography concepts. Learners will gain knowledge of camera equipment and lighting equipment.
Lighting Design
This unit will impart the principles of lighting design, including light theory, colour theory, stage lighting techniques and the process of design. Learners will apply that knowledge to design their own lighting plans. Learners will see how lighting fits into the design of a show and learn how to use lighting equipment.

My daughter absolutely loved this week’s paper. It gave her an opportunity to see how a good piece of writing differs from an average one. She felt so confident that she gave herself top marks! I personally really liked it. It was very detailed and with proper instructions. I really look forward to receiving more work like this.
I passed the exam, most of which was because of your help! I don’t have an actual tutor like most of my friends, but I feel so lucky to have your papers every week. I think you are the best tutor!

Your material is by far the best I have come across for several reasons. It is varied, so my daughter is exposed to different types of questions and techniques, and clearly graded, which helps me see how well she can tackle a challenging paper compared to a standard one. Above all, though, both the sample answers you provide and your marking service are invaluable because they are clear, exhaustive but also friendly and supportive — it’s hard to believe how discouraging or patronising a lot of 11+ books and papers can get! You are really making it easier for my daughter to understand how she can improve her work.

My daughter and I have gained a great deal from both your books and Lifeline service. My background is in science and I was unsure whether I could help much with comprehension. However, with your detailed notes on how and how not to answer comprehension questions, I have been able to guide my daughter in analysing writing in a way that she has not been taught to at school, or indeed in her 11+ tutoring group … The first writing pack was everything that I and my daughter could have asked for. We had great fun learning from it and we look forward to using the second pack.

Unlock M4 iPad Pro power with these apps for creative professionals
It’s been a big week for the iPad. The M4 iPad Pro and iPad Air 6 will make their way into users’ hands in a matter of days. That makes now the perfect time to start making a list of all the best iPadOS apps to enjoy while using the latest and greatest iPad hardware.
The question of getting things done on the iPad is evergreen. So we’ve assembled a collection of some of the best iPad apps specifically for creative professionals, spanning a variety of fields.
Want to create great things using Apple’s tablet? Here are some of the top tools to get started. Many of them will push the power of the new M4 iPad Pro, but even those that don’t will still run smoother than ever on the new hardware.
- FiLMiC Pro is a video capture app that gives you full manual control of your footage. It supports shooting in ProRes and was even touted by Apple for that feature when the iPhone 13 Pro debuted. As an alternative, be sure to check out Apple’s new Final Cut Camera app when it debuts later this spring.
- LumaFusion is the gold standard third-party app for video editing on the iPad. Our own Fernando Silva even uses LumaFusion for his video work at 9to5Mac.
- Final Cut Pro is Apple’s own solution for iPad video editing. Years in the making, the app finally debuted last spring and is getting a big upgrade to version 2 soon.
- Spotify for Podcasters is the new name for what was once known as Anchor until Spotify acquired it. Anchor built a strong reputation for making podcasting easy and accessible to the masses, with a streamlined set of tools that take the complexity out of recording and publishing a podcast.
- Ferrite Recording Studio is the app I used to edit the now-retired Adapt podcast on my iPad Pro. It’s a versatile audio editing tool that works equally well when just using touch, or with an Apple Pencil, or a connected Magic Keyboard.
Photography
- Affinity Photo was the Photoshop-equivalent on the iPad long before Photoshop debuted on iPadOS. A powerful, touch-native design, Afffinity proves that iPad apps don’t have to be second-class citizens to their Mac counterparts.
- Photomator provides user-friendly but dynamic tools to users of all skill levels and has been especially on the front lines with utilizing AI and ML.
- Adobe Photoshop may not be the exact replica of its Mac sibling, but Adobe has done significant work to bring some of the most important editing tools to the iPad.
- Darkroom is a far more approachable app than tools like Photoshop, providing valuable tools for those who don’t need a full-fledged editing suite. Darkroom’s secret weapon is that it’s built for editing not just photos, but video too.
- Ulysses is my app of choice for writing on the iPad Pro. It features an elegant, exceedingly native feeling design, while also providing powerful tools that scale from smaller works like writing 9to5Mac articles to drafting entire books.
- Scrivener is a fan favorite among novelists especially, with an array of tools built specifically for managing and keeping track of various author notes, character details, and other world-building information.
Illustration
- Procreate has a long history on the iPad and continues to receive noteworthy updates all the time. It’s the most popular app for sketching, painting, and illustrating and has truly earned its success.
- Linea Sketch is a lighter weight illustration tool for anyone intimidated by Procreate. The app does a great job of curating a core set of tools and providing a distraction-free interface for creating.
- BandLab provides a one-stop shop for music creation on the iPad, with tools that span the whole process from recording to editing and even sharing your music online.
- Logic Pro is Apple’s iPad version of the well-known Mac tool that musicians and producers have relied on for decades. Logic’s upcoming stem splitting feature seems set to take full advantage of the iPad Pro’s M4 chip.
The above apps are just scratching the surface of the powerful tools available to creative professionals on iPad. While it’s undeniable that iPadOS comes with a variety of restrictions and limitations that don’t plague the Mac, the platform can still be a fantastic place for creative work if you find the right tools for the job.
What are your thoughts? Do you have any go-to apps for getting creative work done on the iPad? Let us know in the comments.

Ryan got his start in journalism as an Editor at MacStories, where he worked for four years covering Apple news, writing app reviews, and more. For two years he co-hosted the Adapt podcast on Relay FM, which focused entirely on the iPad. As a result, it should come as no surprise that his favorite Apple device is the iPad Pro.
