It’s that time of year again for social media posts, emails, and gifts thanking teachers for their hard work —and legions of teachers who still report feeling unappreciated. For years, writers have taken to Education Week’s opinion pages to mark the week with both heartfelt thanks and searching reflections on how to make that appreciation last far longer than five days.

In 2021, teachers of the year from seven states came together to write “ It’s Teacher Appreciation Week. Flowers? Mugs? We’re Looking for Something More ,” expressing their hopes for appreciative gestures that won’t wilt by the end of the week.

Their No. 1 ask? “Include teachers in education decisions.”

Another former state teacher of the year came to a similar conclusion several years earlier, when 2014 Texas Teacher of the Year Monica Washington argued that messages of appreciation ring hollow when they aren’t accompanied by a seat at the decisionmaking table: “We are often told that we are ‘valued professionals’ who ‘change the lives of our students every day.’ But we are also micromanaged to immobility, not trusted to make the simplest decisions that affect students’ learning and well-being.”

Sharif El-Mekki has taken on a principal eye view of this conundrum in several recent essays. “What if we made Teacher Appreciation Week last all year?” he asked school leaders last spring , before laying out five actionable recommendations.

Several months later, the former principal kept the theme of teacher appreciation alive into the fall by offering “ The 4 Gifts Principals Should Give Teachers This Year (Hint: Not Another School Mug) .”

The widespread assumption that every teacher is an administrator-in-waiting undermines the valuable types of leadership that teachers bring to the job they already have, she writes.

Gratitude doesn’t just come from outside the profession: Teachers are ready to appreciate each other as well. Just look at what these teachers and student-teachers had to say about the educators who inspired them:

A decade into retirement, former English teacher Laurie Barnoski was still feeling the appreciation when she sat down to write a love letter to teaching back in 2018. After reconnecting with four former students—two of whom had gone on to become English teachers themselves—she was reminded of the long-tail influence of her job.

“By taking time to say thank you,” she wrote, “my students were telling me that my 32 years in the classroom meant something; my goal to have a positive impact on my students was complete. They gave me the greatest gift human beings can give one another: They told me that I mattered.”

Sarita Kaur is my favourite teacher. She teaches Social Science to class 6. She is a very professional and qualified teacher. She always helps me with my doubts, and she never gets angry even if I ask her any doubt more than once. She is very friendly and approachable, and hence many of my classmates also consider her their favourite teacher.

I really enjoy her class, and she pays attention to each and every student in our class. She teaches in a very interactive and creative way. Her classes are very interesting, and she never makes them boring, and therefore she is my favourite teacher.

Everyone has a favourite teacher in their school or college life. The one teacher whose classes they look forward to attending. They wait eagerly and never skip that one particular teacher’s class. Anita Sharma is that teacher for me. She is my favourite teacher. She teaches us History, Geography, Economics, and Civics.

Most of my classmates from other sections complained about how boring these subjects were. But she makes these subjects fascinating by using her unique way of teaching. She uses stories and pictures to teach the theory. Her classes are enjoyable and engaging. She keeps checking on everyone from the first bench to the last bench in her class.

She is also one of those teachers that guides us whenever we are stuck with doubts. She even made a social media group so we can contact her especially when we have any doubts anytime. Whenever I can’t understand anything in Social Science, I ask her in the group, and she replies instantly, solving my doubts in minutes. She is always gentle and calm with students who don’t understand fundamental theories. She tries to explain them using different techniques, but there is never a slight bit of frustration or anger in her tone. She rarely scolds any student, and she has never struck someone. All these reasons made her my favourite teacher.

I was never a really bright student in my class, I used to love other subjects, but mathematics was always my weak subject. But it all changed in class 9 when Anirudh Kumar became our mathematics teacher. In his first-class itself, he gently and in a very calm way introduced himself and went to each and every student to ask about their hobbies and favourite subjects. When he asked me, I abruptly said, “I don’t like Mathematics, and history is my favourite subject.”

The classroom went completely silent. I was afraid that he was going to be upset over my answer, but to my shock, he smiled and said, “We will change that by the end of this year.”

Now I am in class 12, and he really did change my favourite subject. I love mathematics only because of him. He is and will always be my favourite teacher. He taught his students in a way no other teacher did. Not only that, but he never scolded anyone for doing any of the work wrong. Furthermore, he was always very patient and friendly. Even the weakest students in the class including me were slowly improving in the exams because of him.

Way Of Teaching | He used funny and catchy rhyming tricks to make us learn the hard mathematics formulas. We never ever felt any discomfort or fear in his presence; he turned the class into a convivial and jolly place single-handedly. There were days when I looked for Sunday to pass, just to be in the Mathematics class on Mondays. Whenever I got confused or troubled with any problem – from a small long division sum to choosing my career, I went to him, and he solved all my problems in seconds. Even my classmates used to take his help and fondly called him sir counsellor.

On the teacher’s day, he even won the best teacher award. He was selected by popular voting. I realised that day Anirudh sir is a favourite of many. I felt very proud and happy for him.

Inspiration To Students | He was also involved in many social activities. He used to teach poor kids for free in the evening. He was connected with many NGOs and went to teach underprivileged kids in slums on weekends. I remember once he took our entire class to the slum area. I was struck with awe when I saw him teaching the kids there with the same level of passion and zeal he used to teach us in the school. That was the moment he became my all-time favourite teacher.

Impact On My Life | I scored the highest marks in Mathematics in my class 9. He developed a spark in me to study mathematics. He turned the dull and boring subject into something I love doing just for fun. I even scored full marks in my class 10 Board Examination. I spoke to him over the phone and thanked him. The mediocre student in me will be forever grateful to him for teaching with so much passion. He played a huge part in making me what I am today.

Fresh spiking warning as predators lace vapes and use 100 different drugs to poison drinks

Nearly one million people had their drinks spiked last year, as the offence surged across the UK.

Between May 2022 and April 2023, there were 6,732 reports of spiking in England and Wales .

But senior police officers say the real figure is likely far higher because the offence is so underreported.

Karen Tyrell, chief executive of charity Drinkaware, said a survey of more than 10,000 people showed 2.2% reported having their drink spiked in the past year.

‘That sounds like quite a small number of people but if you take it across the whole of the UK that is 900,000 people,’ she told the Daily Mail.

‘And given it is so underreported, that is absolutely massive.’

Met Police forensic consultant Dean Ames said officers had found 100 different drugs in 1,500 urine samples.

But Rohypnol – a drug traditionally associated with spiking – was not found in a single one of them, with predators moving away from it and using other substances to incapacitate victims.

Mr Ames warned people that vapes ‘very much the new threat’, the Independent reports.

He told reporters at Scotland Yard: ‘Many of you are aware of the rise of vapes. They are very much a new threat.

They should contain nicotine, but they do contain THC – and more recently we’ve seen vapes that contain what is colloquially known as spice.

‘People could be offered a vape not knowing what they’re about to inhale. Vapes are very dangerous.’

Detective chief superintendent Angela Craggs urged anyone who thinks they may have been spiked to report it as soon as possible so tests can be carried out quickly – as many substances leave the body after just 12 hours.

She went on: ‘Spiking is a premediated and invasive crime and we are doing more to target predatory and dangerous offenders.

‘We cannot tackle spiking alone and that’s why we’re working closely with charities, venues and businesses across London and beyond – training nightclub staff to spot the signs of spiking and helping to raise awareness with those who visit pubs and clubs.

‘Our message to victims is clear – please come forward and get the support you rightly deserve from our specially trained officers.’
