PhD PROGRAMS OFFERED

A master's degree may be earned during the completion of the PhD.

Admission Requirements

All applicants must:

  • Hold a U.S. bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution. Degree holders from non-U.S. institutions should refer to Required Academic Credentials from Non-U.S. Institutions.

International applicants must:

  • Take one of these English proficiency tests:

International applicants are exempt from submitting an official English proficiency score if:

  • The degree was earned from an institution where the language of instruction is exclusively English. This exception does not apply if some classes completed were taught in a language other than English. Verification from the school may be required.
  • The degree was earned from a country where the official language is English (e.g., United States of America, Australia, England).

The College of Pharmacy admits new graduate students for the fall term only. The deadline for each PhD program is:

  • Medicinal Chemistry: December 1
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences: December 1
  • Clinical Pharmacy Translational Science:   December 1

All applicants to our PhD programs use the online application provided through the Rackham Graduate School.

  • Before applying review the Rackham Admissions website
  • Read the "Applying to UM-Ann Arbor page and set up an Application Account
  • Review the " How to Submit More Than One Application " page if you are applying to more than one program using the Rackham application

Note: Our PhD programs do not generally accept applications to do PhD work with specific faculty. The normal process is to apply to the PhD program through the Graduate School (as described).

Your application will then be considered along with all the other applications we receive. During their first year, our students perform research rotations in faculty labs, and at the end of the winter term, students are matched with a faculty member who will mentor them through their PhD studies.

  • Fees are waived for U.S. citizens and permanent residents
  • $90 for international applicants

Rackham will not process an application without the application fee, nor can the College review applications prior to the payment of this fee. The fee is waived for applicants to the Clinical Pharmacy Translational Sciences, Medicinal Chemistry and the Pharmaceutical Sciences programs who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Some fee waivers are available from the Rackham Graduate School; for more information click here.

The following documents are required for application to our PhD programs and are due, with your online application, by the deadline:

  • The GRE is not required.
  • One set of official academic transcripts from completed degree(s)
  •   Review this webpage for instructions regarding the submission of transcripts :  https://rackham.umich.edu/admissions/applying/transcripts/
  • Review this webpage for instructions regarding the submission of Academic Credentials from Non-US Institutions:   https://rackham.umich.edu/admissions/applying/required-credentials-from-non-us-institutions/
  • A concise (1-2 pages), well-written statement about your academic and research background, your career goals, and how the PhD program will help you meet your career and educational objectives.
  • A concise (500-word limit) essay that describes how your background and life experiences, including cultural, geographical, financial, educational, or other opportunities or challenges, motivated your decision to pursue a PhD in our program. Please do not simply restate your Academic Statement of Purpose.
  • These should be written by people capable of evaluating your academic progress and potential for graduate study. Letters must be submitted directly by each recommender.
  • Recommenders should submit the Recommendation form and their letters using the online application site. This is the preferred method of submission; so please be sure to enter information for each of your recommenders on your application as required.
  • If a recommender is unable to access the site after you have submitted your application, he or she can email the letter directly to the PhD program.
  • It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the letters of recommendation are submitted by the deadline. Late letters may result in a delay in processing your application. Click here for more information on submitting letters.

International applicants must also submit:

  • For transcript requirements for international applicants, please click here
  • TOEFL scores are sent electronically from ETS directly to the University of Michigan (institution code: 1839).
  • IELTS, ECPE, and MELAB scores are sent directly from the testing agency to the Rackham Graduate School at the following address:

Rackham Graduate School 915 E. Washington St. Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1070

  • After admission to the program: The Affidavit of Financial Resources and Immigration Information for International Students, with supporting documentation, is required. This form is necessary, regardless of funding.

General questions about applying to College of Pharmacy programs can be submitted by e-mail using the following addresses:

  • Medicinal Chemistry: [email protected]

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Yes, all applicants are required to apply online. This allows your application and fee to be sent directly to the appropriate places, enabling us to process your application much faster.

  • The application fee is automatically waived for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
  • Some applicants may qualify for application fee waivers or grants that are available from the Rackham Graduate School; for more information click here.

No. The fee must be paid before an application can be processed or evaluated.

Yes. Everything must be translated, and both the originals and translations must be submitted.

When evaluating applications, we look at the whole picture and every piece is important. This is why we wait until we have all of your documents before we will look at your application. Strong letters of recommendation are key.

International students must take one of the following English proficiency tests: the TOEFL , the IELTS , or the MELAB .

Official GRE scores:

TOEFL, IELTS, and MELAB scores are valid for two years.

The minimum TOEFL score is 560 for paper-based tests and 84 for IBT tests; the IELTS minimum score is 6.5; the MELAB minimum score is 80.

No. If you have, or will have, a degree from a U.S. institution prior to enrolling at the University of Michigan, you will not need to retake the TOEFL (or the IELTS or MELAB).

The preferred method for submitting recommendations is via the online application. Those who are recommending you can complete this online form and attach the letter of recommendation online. Both the Recommendation Form and the letter are needed. You can forward the Rackham Graduate School link to your letter writers and they can download the form themselves.

Strong letters of recommendation are essential; therefore you should choose your recommenders carefully. Choose faculty who know you well and can speak to your strengths, preferably from your area of research interest. A letter from a professional, or a key educational administrator might also be appropriate. Letters from personal friends or family members are discouraged.

Both the Recommendation Form and the letter are needed. If necessary, you can forward the Rackham link to your letter writers and they can download the form themselves.

The College of Pharmacy offers a master's in Integrated Pharmaceutical Sciences. More information about this program can be found at the following link:  https://pharmacy.umich.edu/prospective-students/programs

This is your chance to show the admissions committee who you are. You should talk about your background, your educational, research, and career goals, and how our graduate program will help you realize those goals. Note that this differs from the personal statement.

  • No. The department will use the transcript that is submitted with the applicant's online application. Only Rackham must have original, official transcripts or mark sheets, bearing the institution's official seal.
  • Please note: Rackham Graduate School conducts a complete audit of each transcript. Due to the high volume of documents being audited, it may take 7 to 14 business days for the notice of receipt to appear online.

The College of Pharmacy has a long history of funding most, if not all, of its PhD students, but such support is not guaranteed. Financial aid comes in the form of departmental fellowships, research assistantships, and student instructorships. Funding for successive years is contingent upon the availability of funds and a student's academic performance for the previous year(s).

Graduate programs at the U-M College of Pharmacy are highly regarded for their interdisciplinary emphasis and are directed by faculty with international reputations for excellence in research and teaching. To learn more about their research, go to the department sites and click on the faculty links.

Rackham Graduate School will notify you to submit the Affidavit of Financial Resources and Immigration Information for International Students only if you are offered admission by the academic program. Please do not submit this form with your application.

Application Requirements

To be eligible for the PharmD program, you must meet certain academic requirements.

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent before matriculation.
  • Have achieved a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in all college work and pre-pharmacy required courses at an accredited two- or four-year college (biochemistry must be taken at a four-year institution). Pre-pharmacy courses from vocational or technical schools are not accepted. If you did not achieve a minimum 3.0 GPA but demonstrate ability to be successful in the program, you may still be considered for admission.
  • Complete all pre-pharmacy required courses with a grade of C or higher at least one week before you enter our program.

Required Pre-Pharmacy Course List

You must complete the following prerequisites as an undergraduate student prior to enrollment in the PharmD program. We recommend that you take the physiology and microbiology prerequisites at a four-year university or college. Biochemistry as an upper-division course must be taken at a four-year institution. For equivalent courses offered at your institutions, please visit our Course Equivalencies list.

Requirements are subject to change.

Pre-Pharmacy Course Descriptions

Biological sciences.

  • Biochemistry: One upper-division course for science majors
  • General biology: One-year course for science majors with labs (excluding courses in human anatomy, human physiology, botany and microbiology); if your university offers less than a one-year course, you must complete the second semester at another institution
  • Human physiology: One course for science majors (if taking a combined anatomy and physiology course for science majors, entire series must be completed)
  • Microbiology: One course in the fundamentals of microbiology for science majors (note that microbiology is offered only in the fall at some institutions)

Mathematics and Physical Sciences

Only courses designed for science majors are accepted. We recommend that math and science courses be completed during the regular academic year rather than during a summer/abbreviated term.

  • Calculus: One semester or two quarters (should include differential and integral calculus for science majors)
  • General chemistry: One-year course with labs for science majors (should include inorganic chemistry and qualitative analysis)
  • Organic chemistry: One-year course with labs for science majors; if your university offers less than a one-year course, you must complete the second semester at another institution

  • Microeconomics
  • Molecular biology (upper division)
  • Physics (courses that include thermodynamics and electromagnetism)
  • Psychology and/or sociology
  • Statistics (not business statistics)

Transcripts

Send one official transcript from each higher education institution you have attended to PharmCAS when you apply to our school. DACA/Undocumented Immigrant Applicants

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is an American immigration policy that allows certain undocumented immigrants who entered the country before their 16th birthday, and before June 2007, to receive a renewable two-year work permit and exemption from deportation. If you are an undocumented applicant, we welcome your application to the PharmD program.

Advanced Placement Credits

The Admissions Committee will not accept College Level Examination Program courses. Our Office of Enrollment and Student Affairs may consider Advanced Placement (AP) exam and International Baccalaureate (IB) credit if you have a bachelor’s degree.

An AP score of 3, 4 or 5 or IB scores of 5, 6, or 7 may be used toward the statistics requirement and the first quarter or semester of a one-year series of pre-pharmacy courses, such as general biology or general chemistry. AP calculus BC can be used to satisfy the calculus requirement. Please submit a copy of all AP scores through your PharmCAS application (Program Materials section) if you are using them to satisfy pre-pharmacy required courses.

Conditional Acceptance

The Admissions Committee may accept you “conditionally” if you have one or more incomplete pre-pharmacy course(s), if your bachelor’s degree is not yet completed or if your final degree is not yet posted to your transcript.

As you complete the missing course(s), please submit your updated transcript(s) to PharmCAS Academic Update . Please mail new/updated transcript(s) after the end of Academic Update directly to USC Mann Office of Enrollment and Student Affairs, 1985 Zonal Avenue, PSC 206A, Los Angeles CA 90089-9121. We use PharmCAS so you can complete one application for multiple pharmacy schools. We don’t require a separate USC supplemental application.

  • Create a PharmCAS account to obtain your PharmCAS ID number.
  • Save your work and return to your application as many times as needed until you are ready to submit it.
  • Enter your transcript information from each higher education institution you’ve attended. All data you enter must match your transcripts.
  • Complete the information about your pre-pharmacy courses and arrange for your official transcripts to be sent directly to PharmCAS from each institution.
  • Arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly to PharmCAS. One letter must be from a science professor with whom you took a class and/or did research. The remaining two letters may be from professors, advisers, researchers, pharmacists or employers. If you are reapplying from one year prior you only need to submit one new letter of recommendation.
  • Answer the questions in the Program Materials section, including two USC PharmD Essay Questions.
  • Electronically sign the California State Board of Pharmacy Felony and Misdemeanor Conviction Disclosure Statement, the Essential Characteristics and Abilities form, and the Applicant’s Affidavit.

The regular PharmCAS application deadline for fall entrance is April 1

The Priority Application deadline is November 1

Applicants are encouraged to apply by the priority deadline, which qualifies you for selection for early interview dates and admissions decisions, scholarship considerations, and a reduced deposit fee if admitted.

It is advisable that you submit your  PharmCAS  application as early as possible. Generally, PharmCAS takes two to five weeks to process your application and send it to USC Mann. You may use PharmCAS Applicant Help Center for further assistance.

2. Attend Your Admissions Interview

After you have submitted your PharmCAS application, we’ll invite qualified and competitive candidates to an admissions interview. You will be notified one to three weeks in advance in order have time to prepare.

Your admissions interview will consist of:

  • Traditional interview with one faculty member or alumnus plus a current student (approximately 20 minutes)
  • Real-life scenario that you must address. The scenario does not test for specific knowledge but offers a holistic view of your reaction skills. We hope to see your proficiency in communication, leadership, interpersonal interactions, critical thinking and ethical decision-making.

Important information about priority (preferred) deadlines and final (enforced) deadlines can be found below. Please carefully review the sections!

Early Decision Discontinued

Early decision is no longer offered as an option in PharmCAS. Applicants are encouraged to apply to their designated Pharm.D. degree programs early in the admissions cycle. Some colleges or schools of pharmacy have priority deadlines or give preference to applicants who apply earlier in the cycle.

Priority (Preferred) Deadlines

Pharmacy schools may choose to set a priority deadline to encourage applicants to apply earlier in the admissions cycle. Priority deadlines are non-binding. You may apply to one or more schools with a priority deadline or apply to a school after the priority deadline has passed (and before the final [enforced] deadline has passed). Visit the PharmCAS School Directory to determine whether the school has any requirements or incentives for applicants who apply by the priority deadline. PharmCAS will not determine whether you met a school’s priority deadline requirements, nor distinguish between regular and priority applications in processing. If you miss a priority deadline and wish to still be considered for any school-specific incentives associated with a priority deadline, contact the school directly.

PharmCAS Priority Application Deadline Date Options for 2023-2024

PharmCAS encourages applicants to submit all materials early and before the early decision deadline to allow for any unexpected issues. PharmCAS cannot extend the early decision deadline for any applicants or schools.

  • October 2, 2023 (11:59 pm Hawaii Time)
  • November 1, 2023 (11:59 pm Hawaii Time)
  • December 1, 2023 (11:59 pm Hawaii Time)
  • January 4, 2024 (11:59 pm Hawaii Time)
  • February 1, 2024 (11:59 pm Hawaii Time)
  • March 1, 2024 (11:59 pm Hawaii Time)
  • April 1, 2024 (11:59 pm Hawaii Time)
  • May 1, 2024 (11:59 pm Hawaii Time)

Final (Enforced) Deadlines

Apply Early! Participating PharmCAS programs encourage applicants to submit applications at least two weeks before their school application deadlines to avoid congestion due to heavy applicant and Internet traffic.

PharmCAS processing may take up to two weeks, once all required materials are received. Submit your PharmCAS application and arrange for materials to arrive at PharmCAS by the program's deadline. The deadline indicates when materials must arrive at PharmCAS (and not the program). Programs may have multiple deadline dates or operate on a rolling admissions basis. Visit the PharmCAS School Directory for details.

Application Close Time

All PharmCAS deadlines expire at 11:59 pm Hawaii Time (HT). Review the time zones to determine when the application will close in your area:

  • 11:59 pm (HT)
  • 1:59 am (AKT)
  • 2:59 am (PT)
  • 3:59 am (MT)
  • 4:59 am (CT)
  • 5:59 am (ET)

Program Deadlines

To determine the application deadline for schools you are interested in applying to, please refer to the PharmCAS School Directory . Below are the PharmCAS deadline date options for programs in the 2023-2024 cycle:

  • November 1, 2023
  • December 1, 2023
  • January 4, 2024

  • March 1, 2024
  • April 1, 2024
  • May 1, 2024
  • June 3, 2024

Late Materials and Missed Deadlines

A program may deny your application if your transcripts or other materials arrive late. If you submit your application by the program’s deadline, PharmCAS will release your application to your selected programs, even if your materials arrive after the deadline. PharmCAS is not responsible for any materials lost in the mail or for delays caused by the registrar's office. Express or certified mail does not guarantee expedient processing, nor does sending transcripts express or certified mail guarantee receipt by PharmCAS.

Deadline Extensions

Contact the program directly to request a deadline extension. Programs are not obligated to grant deadline extensions or give consideration to applicants who submit late application materials. You have 48-hours to complete and submit your PharmCAS application once the deadline extension is granted. If you fail to e-submit your application in that time, you must contact the program directly to request a second 48-hour deadline extension. Programs are not obligated to grant deadline extensions or give consideration to applicants who submit application materials after the school application deadline.

List of Selected Candidates for admission into Ph.D. Program 2022-23.

Embark on an Extraordinary Journey: Join Our Prestigious Ph.D. Programme

phd in pharmacy admission 2022 23

Enrolling in a research degree program is a long-term commitment requiring students to delve deeper into a specific study area. Students collaborate with their supervisor and the doctoral committee shortly after enrollment to brainstorm potential problems. Through a thorough literature review, the team identifies gaps and formulates a hypothesis. This step is crucial and significant for the student.

Once the hypothesis is formulated, students, supervisors, and other academic companions identify appropriate methodologies to conduct in-depth experiments and gather evidence. This marks the beginning of your investigation. You'll face many challenges during this four to five-year journey. Not all experiments will yield the desired results, and sometimes you will need to change your experimental tools or revisit the proposed hypothesis.

EPIC N flyer featuring faces of panel

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is proud to announce the forthcoming EPIC-N Conference , hosted by the Educational Partnerships for Innovation in Communities – Network (EPIC-N), a nonprofit association with members around the globe. Dedicated to uniting the human capital of universities with local governments and communities, EPIC-N and its member programs strive to enhance the quality of life and social wealth for all involved.

The conference, scheduled for June 23rd to 25th, 2024, will provide a platform for university representatives, local government officials, and organizational partners to explore the potential of the EPIC Model in their institutions and communities. Attendees will engage in discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities aimed at adopting, adapting, and enhancing the EPIC Model to drive sustainable community development initiatives.

"SIUE has been a proud participant in the EPIC-N program since 2017, and our engagement has been transformative for our University community," said Denise Cobb, PhD, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. "We are delighted to partner with EPIC-N in hosting this exciting conference. Together, we aim to empower participants with the tools, resources, and connections needed to make a lasting impact on their communities."

The conference will feature a diverse range of sessions, including research and practitioner presentations, panels, and 10-minute flash talks. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to engage in a peer coaching session where they can pitch a problem and collectively work towards finding solutions as a group.

While primarily an in-person event, the conference will offer hybrid session options to accommodate individuals unable to travel to the conference site, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all.

"We are excited to offer a dynamic program that combines presentations from experts in the field with interactive sessions that encourage collaboration and problem-solving," added Ada Inman, EPIC-N program manager.

Registration for the EPIC-N Conference at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is now open.

Hoxworth Blood Center announces new interim leadership

headshot of Jackie Marschall

Caroline Alquist, MD, PhD, and David Oh, MD, are the new interim co-directors of Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, effective Monday, June 3.

Alquist and Oh, who both hold appointments as associate professor at UC's College of Medicine, have extensive experience in the field of blood bank administration and together will lead Hoxworth as they collaborate on all blood center management and strategic efforts.

Alquist, chief transplant and cellular therapies officer, will ensure seamless continuity of Hoxworth’s clinical patient care. She is a leader in apheresis, transplant immunology and biotherapies with significant skill in clinical pathology, transfusion medicine, histocompatibility, laboratory medicine leadership and blood management.

Since joining Hoxworth in 2020, Alquist's clinical focus has been in supporting all regional solid organ and bone marrow transplants, which she will continue while serving as co-director. She has served as interim division director, cellular therapies, since last year, but will relinquish those responsibilities as soon as an ongoing search is completed to permanently fill that position.

Oh, chief medical officer, possesses a wealth of experience in operational process optimization and innovative initiatives. He has provided leadership to blood centers with the American Red Cross, San Diego Blood Bank and Stanford University Blood Center.

Oh joined UC's faculty in 2017 and will continue to focus his attention on blood supply, including blood donor recruitment, collection, processing, labeling, testing, storage and distribution. He also will continue as the UC Medical Center Transfusion Medicine/Blood Bank Medical Director and as the director of the Hoxworth Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking Fellowship Program while leading all medical student, resident and fellow transfusion medicine education.

Hoxworth is confident that Alquist and Oh will form a strong, coordinated team to continue their mission to enhance patient wellbeing, support more than 30 hospitals in the Greater Cincinnati region and maintain the center’s 85-year-record of the highest standards of quality, safety and innovation.

Alquist and Oh will lead Hoxworth following the June 2 departure of José Cancelas, MD, PhD, who has served as director and chief executive officer since Feb. 1, 2018.

Reflecting on his tenure, Cancelas expressed gratitude for the support of the community, staff and donor.

"My time at Hoxworth has been a privilege, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together," he said.

Cancelas is joining Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, where he will be the executive director of the Connell-O’Reilly Cell Manipulation Core Facility and hold an endowed professorship at Harvard Medical School. Under his leadership, Hoxworth became the only academic unit formed by a blood center in the United States, significantly expanded clinical activities and conducted groundbreaking bench and clinical research.

Hoxworth extends co ngratulations to Alquist and Oh on their expanded leadership responsibilities and a sincere thank you to Cancelas for his 23 years of extraordinary service to Hoxworth, the College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children’s.
