The Up In Smoke cocktail from Gracias Madre in Los Angeles

Nowadays anyone can build a well-crafted cocktail, but to get drinkers' attention some bartenders are turning to eye-catching garnishes and presentations. Below, 13 drinks that are sure to turn heads.

cool cocktail presentation

Location: 9 Sanborn Court Somerville, MA Bartender: Sam Treadway Cocktail: Bartender's Choice with a dragon statue.

When a sales rep showed up with this dragon statue, Backbar co-owner and manager Sam Treadway knew he had to incorporate it into service. Now when his guests are celebrating a birthday or if the bar just wants to dazzle a group of drinkers, a cocktail Smaug the dragon makes an appearance. Whether it's a Hurricane at its feet or a flaming Tiki goblet grasped in its claw, everyone's inner child is sure to come out.

Location: 540 Atlantic Avenue, Boston, MA Bartender: Tenzin Samdo Cocktail: Hawaiian Shirt ($12) with Privateer rum, hibiscus, pineapple, pomegranate and mint.

Mr. Hashtag Luchador is actually Trade's mascot and there is only one of him. He can be requested on a cocktail or will show up when a guest customizes a drink from the bar's #TRADECreates program. Most frequently he rides the Hawaiian Shirt cocktail while holding a lime shell filled with flaming Chartreuse. Unfortunately, last month a couple of customers pocketed the beloved cocktail garnish, so the restaurant had to order a new one, which is now red instead of black.

Location: 861 N La Cienega Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA Bartender: Barton G. Weiss Cocktail: Sabrinatini ($20) with orange vodka, watermelon shrub, nitro Champagne swizzle stick and a chocolate monkey.

How many cocktails are inspired by a pet monkey? One, this one by restaurateur Barton G. Weiss, whose monkey Sabrina passed away a couple of years ago. The nitro-chilled pink drink is made with orange vodka, watermelon liqueur and accompanied with a nitro-Champagne swizzle stick as well as a chocolate monkey that dangles off the cocktail glass rim.

Tom Bergin's Public House

Location: 840 S Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, CA Bartender: Brandi Boles Cocktail: Iced Campfire Irish Coffee ($10) with Tullamore DEW, dark roast coffee, and simple syrup, garnished with a toasted marshmallow, chocolate and a graham cracker.

It only makes sense that a campfire-inspired iced Irish coffee comes with a bite-size s'mores. But turns out the fireside treat also serves a purpose. "The s’more replaces the chilled cream to give it that subtle sweetness to balance out the coffee flavor," says bartender Brandi Boles.

The Gothic Bar at Clifton's Cafeteria

Location: 648 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA Bartender: Dustin Newsome Cocktail: The Two Rays ($14) with Jim Beam Prohibition rye whiskey, Aromatique Amaro, PX Sherry, lemon and egg white served with a silver chocolate spoon.

Bartender Dustin Newsome wanted to garnish his cocktail with dark chocolate, thinking it would complement the sherry, rye and amaro. Somehow its form evolved into a spoon. The food-grade silver paint was his pastry chef's genius idea. To truly enjoy the garnish and drink pairing, Newsome recommends taking a bite of the spoon and sipping the cocktail.

Gracias Madre

Location: 8905 Melrose Avenue, West Hollywood, CA Bartender: Jason Eisner Cocktail: Up In Smoke ($25) with tequila blanco, house mosaic hopped cucumber soda, lemon, celery bitters, CO2, smoked tableside with hempseeds in a water pipe decanter.

For extra smokey flavor, beverage manager Jason Eisner smokes his Up In Smoke tequila cocktail in a 12-inch-tall bong. The cocktail is smoked tableside with hempseeds for a mesmerizing show, as well as to amplify the tequila's smokiness and naughtiness. Note: NOT to actually get the drinker high. But for a little fun the letters "T," "H," and "C" are spelled out in cucumber carvings.

The Walker Inn

Location: 3612 W. 6th Street, Los Angeles, CA Bartender: Alex Day, Katie Emmerson, Devon Tarby Cocktail: Beth's Going To Town! ($20) with scotch, gin, vermouth, amaro, apricot and garnished with a line of powdered sugar.

The Walker Inn's summer menu, an ode to summer memories and the Wet Hot American Summer movie, presents a fun collection of out-of-the-box creative cocktails. Imbibers at this reservations-only Koreatown bar can take their pick of libations served in a glass milk carton with a side of cereal or out of a plastic Batman sippy pouch. The Beth's Going To Town! cocktail, inspired by the movie's debaucherous, drug-crazed scene, isn't actually served with a line of cocaine. But to prep the cocktail for presentation, the bartenders do cut up the powdered sugar with a credit card for a pristine rail.

Beachbum Berry's Latitude 29

Location: 321 N Peters Street, New Orleans, LA Bartender: Jeff "Beachbum" Berry, Brad Smith Cocktail: Snake vs. Mongoose ($60, serves 4 to 6) with the Mongoose rum-based cocktail garnished with the King Cobra gin-based cocktail.

Even though this large format cocktail represents one of the fiercest duels in the animal kingdom, barman Jeff "Beachbum" Berry says the two very different drinks actually work well together. "We combine the King Cobra and Mongoose because while their (secret) flavor profiles are very different, they still work very well together in 'counterpoint' as liquid yin and yang, so to speak," explains Berry. In t his battle we're all winners.

New York City

Location: 151 Rivington St, New York, NY Bartender: Dave Fernie Cocktail: Stone Cold Stunna ($14) with mezcal, Perry’s Tot Gin, lime juice, raspberry syrup, ginger syrup and garnished with a pony of Miller High Life.

The Stone Cold Stunna is a take on one of Ernest Hemingway's favorite cocktails, the Floradora. But instead of club soda, barman Dave Fernie subs in Miller High Life, which makes a memorable entrance in the boot cocktail glass. "Upturning the pony of High Life just made sense in order to lengthen the drink. And when we were testing it, it added a pleasant flavor as the volume of beer in the cocktail increased. It just becomes this fun journey where the cocktail moves into more and more nuanced territory the more high life ends up in there," he explains.

Genuine Liquorette

Location: 191 Grand Street, New York, NY Bartender: Eben Freeman Cocktail: Mojito ($10.10) with Cruzan White Rum, Sprite, lime and mint.

Genuine Liquorette keeps it really simple with cocktails: punching a big hole through a soda can with something called a Cha-Chunker and upturning a mini bottle of booze for instant gratification. Enjoy low-high-brow variations such as a Dark & Stormy with Ron Zacapa rum and a Paloma with Patron and San Pellegrino Pompelmo.

Pouring Ribbons

Location: 225 Avenue B, New York, NY Bartender: Joaquin Simo Cocktail: A Night at the Wigwam ($15) with Encanto Pisco, orange cordial, Junipero gin, lemon curd and Earl Grey-smoked yogurt.

"A Night at the Wigwam" cocktail is part of Pouring Ribbons' new "Route 66" cocktail menu. Inspired by The Wigwam Motels chain from the '30s and '40s, it's garnished with a orange half-wheel, crushed smoked almonds and served under a teepee. The server then pulls off the teepee tableside to reveal the drink. "It's a small moment, and we quickly clear the tray and teepee, but it does add a tremendous visual component that ties the drink (a Ramos Gin Fizz variation with California-derived ingredients) to the motel located near the end of the highway," says head bartender Joaquin Simo.

Location: 1028 SE Water Avenue, Portland, OR Bartender: Boke Staff Cocktail: Boke Bloody Mary ($10) with tomato juice, Bloody Mary spices, fish sauce vinaigrette, Cry Baby Thai chili hot sauce and wasabi garnished with fried chicken.

Unsurprisingly, this Bloody Mary with fried chicken garnish is the restaurant's most popular menu item. "The chicken pairs so nicely with our Asian pickles, and the pickles go so well with the Bloody Mary, that it wasn't a big leap to garnish our fish-sauce-and-dashi-infused-Bloody Mary with chicken and pickles," explains Boke Bowl owner Brannon Riceci. Of course there is also a fried tofu garnish option ... but come on.

Great Maple

Location: 1451 Washington Street, San Diego, CA Bartender: Johnny Rivera Cocktail: One-Armed Mary ($13.95) with 42 Below Vodka, house Mary mix, spices, salt and pepper rim, fresh lemon and a spicy grilled octopus tentacle.

Hangovers are the previous night's shenanigans holding onto you and not letting go. Great Maple owner Johnny Rivera understood this full well and how a hangover cure needs a combination of booze and protein to be truly effective. So, an octopus' extremity garnishing his Bloody Mary was the answer. "I caught fresh octopus in Sardinia, Italy and inspired me to put a fresh tentacle in my morning libation. After a night of drinking 'The night she still has one claw on ya,'" he says.

10 Epic Cocktail Presentations Ideas & Tips

The art of crafting cocktails goes far beyond the mixology itself. A beautifully presented cocktail not only tantalizes the taste buds but also engages the senses on a visual and aromatic level. Whether you’re a seasoned bartender or an at-home enthusiast, enhancing the presentation of your cocktails is a surefire way to elevate the overall drinking experience.

Here we share 10 creative cocktail presentation tips that will ensure that whether you’re hosting a cocktail party or are having friends round for a BBQ, your drinks taste exceptional and look like works of art.

Fruity flourishes

Fruit is a fantastic and versatile way to enhance the presentation of your cocktails. Slices, wedges, or twists of citrus, such as oranges, lemons, or limes, can add a pop of colour and a burst of freshness to your drinks. Berries and cherries provide both visual appeal and a delightful fruity aroma. For a tropical twist, consider using pineapple, kiwi, or even watermelon.

Fruit can be used as a garnish, muddled into the cocktail, or even skewered as a unique decoration for your glass as we’ve done for our maraschino cherry Manhattan . It doesn’t even have to be fresh fruit. Dried fruit can look very appealing and freeze-dried fruit powders can add a hit of flavour and colour.

Herb appeal

Herbs are a winning addition to elegant cocktail recipes . They not only introduce enticing fragrances but also a touch of class to your cocktails. Fresh mint, basil, or sprigs of thyme can be used to garnish and infuse your drinks with a delightful herbal aroma.

They are also a great way to create variations of classics: try our Rosemary Old Fashioned if you don’t believe us! Crushing the herbs gently between your palms before adding them to the cocktail will release their essential oils, further elevating the sensory experience.

Rev up the rim

Rim garnishes add a playful touch to cocktails and add to the flavour profile of the drink. Classic examples include a salted rim for margaritas or a sugar-coated rim for sweet cocktails.

For a unique twist, consider using spices, crushed candies, or nuts to complement the beverage’s taste and visual appeal. For example, we recommend a rim of Tajin if you want to inject some contrasting chilli heat into a fruity watermelon whisky cocktail .

Give your glassware a zhuzh

The choice of glassware can greatly impact how a cocktail is perceived. Tall, slender glasses are perfect for showing off layered cocktails. While wide, low glasses are great for short and strong concoctions.

You don’t even have to serve your drinks in glass vessels. A whisky mule , for instance, is often served in a copper mug and when seeking tropical vibes, many find tiki mugs fun and bang-on theme.

Flower power

Edible flowers are a delightful way to add a touch of romance and whimsy to your cocktails. Varieties like violets, pansies, or nasturtiums are not only visually stunning but also lend subtle floral notes to the drink.

Float them on the surface, freeze them into ice cubes, or create a beautiful floral garnish as we’ve done for our whisky lemon cocktail . You’re guaranteed a snap-worthy beverage you’ll want to add straight to your socials.

Cool as ice

Ice is more than just a means to chill a cocktail; it’s a visual element that can enhance the overall aesthetic. A single large cube works great in a rocks glass, but spheres, rods and custom shapes can all give your drink a refined and upscale appearance.

Speciality ice shapes can also be tailored to match the theme of your cocktail. For example, ice roses add charm to summer serves at a garden party, while skulls are a frightfully delightful addition when hosting a Halloween bash.

If you’ve got a punch bowl that guests can serve themselves from instead, consider making a decorative ice ring to add to it. Not only will it keep the drink chilled, but it’ll act as a statement centrepiece for the table too.

Best fronds

Leaves, such as basil, bay or pineapple can be used as a garnish or creative decoration for cocktails. They add a touch of greenery and a hint of earthiness to your presentation. These leaves can be tucked into the cocktail glass a la our Caribbean Fire spicy whisky cocktail , used to wrap garnishes, or artistically arranged on the serving tray.

Foam not only adds a creamy texture to cocktails but also provides a canvas for artistic expression. You can top your drinks with frothy foam and create intricate designs or patterns using bitters, fruit puree, or cocktail syrups.

Our scotch coffee cocktail , for instance, is topped with lightly whipped double cream, and this could be dusted with cocoa powder using a stencil if you wanted it to look just like your favourite coffee shop latte.

Serve with a snack

Pairing cocktails with complimentary snacks not only enhances the overall presentation but also elevates the tasting experience. We all know that crisps and peanuts are fan favourites but levelling up your cocktail accompaniments can make all the difference.

Think of miniature appetisers like olives, cheese, or bruschetta, that match or contrast to the flavour profiles of the cocktail. For a mango cocktail , for example, dried pineapple chunks play into the sweetness of the mango. But for difference, try pairing it with something that has some spice and heat like chilli popcorn. Presentation is key, so consider using stylish serving platters or unique containers to present the snacks alongside your drinks.

Accessorise

Tiny details can make a big difference. Add extra personality to your cocktails by using colourful straws, decorative stirrers, or cocktail picks. These accessories can be coordinated with the overall theme of your cocktail or used to showcase your personal style. For example, we’ve served up our matcha whisky cocktail with a gold metal straw. It works really well with the tumbler and the striking green hue of the drink. Overall, it looks incredibly contemporary while also giving off a mid-century vibe.

Discover the Art of Mixology

A guide to cocktail presentation and serving styles.

Cocktail Presentation and Serving Styles

In the vibrant world of mixology, crafting the perfect cocktail goes beyond just blending flavors; it's an art form that delights all the senses. One crucial aspect of this artistry is the artful presentation of cocktails, where every detail matters. In this blog post, we explore the different ways to serve a cocktail, the main styles of cocktails, the ideal choices for a cocktail reception, and the five methods of cocktail preparation, unveiling the secrets to impeccable Cocktail Presentation that elevates every libation to a work of art.

Understanding Different Ways to Serve a Cocktail:

Cocktails can be served in various ways, each offering a unique experience for the imbiber. Here are some popular methods of cocktail service:

Neat : Cocktails served neat are pure, undiluted, and chilled, typically in a straight-sided glass. This presentation highlights the essence of the spirit, allowing the drinker to savor its full flavor.

On the Rocks : Serving a cocktail on the rocks means over ice, often in a rocks glass. The ice cools and dilutes the drink, providing a refreshing and smoother taste.

Straight Up : This presentation involves shaking or stirring a cocktail with ice and then straining it into a chilled cocktail glass. It offers a chilled yet strong sipping experience without ice.

Frozen : Frozen cocktails blend ice, spirits, and flavors to create a slushy and refreshing delight, perfect for warmer days and poolside gatherings.

Highball and Collins : Cocktails served in tall glasses with a larger volume of mixer, like the classic Gin and Tonic or Tom Collins, create long, refreshing drinks perfect for casual occasions.

Main Styles of Cocktails:

The world of cocktails is teeming with diverse styles, each offering its own distinct characteristics and flavor profiles. Some of the main styles of cocktails include:

a. Classic Cocktails : These are iconic, time-tested recipes that have stood the test of time. Think Martini, Old Fashioned, and Margarita—a tribute to the craft of mixology and Cocktail Presentation at its finest.

b. Contemporary Craft Cocktails : This style embraces innovation, using cutting-edge techniques, unique ingredients, and artful presentations to create cocktails that push the boundaries of mixology.

c. Tropical Tiki Cocktails : Inspired by exotic destinations, Tiki cocktails feature an array of tropical fruits, rum, and elaborate garnishes, transporting drinkers to a paradise of flavors and whimsical presentation.

d. Molecular Mixology : This avant-garde style blends science and art, employing molecular techniques like foams, gels, and spherification to create visually stunning and adventurous cocktails.

Serving Choices for a Cocktail Reception:

Cocktail receptions offer an excellent opportunity to showcase diverse cocktail presentations, catering to a wide range of preferences. Some popular choices for a cocktail reception include:

a. Signature Cocktails : Design unique cocktails that represent the event's theme or reflect the host's taste, adding a personal touch to the experience.

b. Interactive Stations : Incorporate interactive cocktail stations where guests can customize their drinks, selecting flavors, garnishes, and even glassware to suit their preferences.

c. Tray Passed Cocktails : For a touch of sophistication, have servers pass trays of elegantly presented cocktails, allowing guests to sample a variety of libations.

d. Elevated Garnishes : Elevate the presentation by featuring creative and eye-catching garnishes that add an extra layer of visual appeal to each cocktail.

Five Different Methods of Preparing Cocktails and Their Procedures:

1. Stirring : Stirring is the preferred method for cocktails that contain only spirits or those with delicate ingredients. To stir a cocktail, fill a mixing glass with ice, add the ingredients, and stir gently with a bar spoon until chilled. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, add garnish, and serve.

2. Shaking : Shaking is ideal for cocktails with juices, syrups, or cream, as it incorporates air and creates a frothy texture. Fill a shaker with ice and all the ingredients, shake vigorously, and strain into a chilled glass. Garnish as desired.

3. Building : Building a cocktail involves layering ingredients directly in the serving glass. Add ice to the glass, then pour each ingredient one by one, allowing them to blend naturally without agitation.

4. Muddling : For cocktails that require the extraction of flavors from fresh fruits, herbs, or spices, muddling is the technique of choice. In a mixing glass, combine the ingredients, gently muddle with a muddler or bar spoon to release flavors, add ice, and stir or shake as required.

5. Blending : Blending is used for frozen cocktails or those requiring a smooth and consistent texture. Add all ingredients to a blender with ice, blend until smooth, and serve in appropriate glassware with garnish.

Conclusion :

Cocktail Presentation and Serving Styles are integral aspects of mixology that can elevate the drinking experience from delightful to unforgettable. From the classic elegance of a neatly poured cocktail to the artistic flair of molecular mixology, each style offers a unique journey for both the creator and the imbiber. By understanding the different ways to serve a cocktail, exploring various cocktail styles, and considering the best choices for a cocktail reception, mixologists can captivate their audience with every sip.

Experiment with the five methods of cocktail preparation, infuse creativity into your presentations, and let your passion for mixology shine through. Cheers to raising a glass to the artistry of cocktail presentation—a journey that celebrates the fusion of flavors, aesthetics, and memorable experiences.

Ever heard the phrase, “we eat with our eyes first”? The same applies to cocktails. A cocktail’s presentation can stir excitement and anticipation, transforming a simple drink into an event. Elevating the Aesthetics

The magic of garnishes.

Garnishes can range from a simple twist of citrus peel to extravagant additions like edible flowers or specially shaped ice cubes . They add a visual pop and can also enhance or complement the drink’s flavours.

The best garnish doesn’t overpower the drink but complements it. It’s all about finding the perfect balance between style and substance.

Playing with colours and textures can bring a cocktail to life. A vibrant colour can make a cocktail stand out, while contrasting textures add depth and intrigue.

Techniques to Master the Art of Presentation

Layering is a technique used to create visually striking multi-coloured cocktails. By slowly pouring ingredients of different densities, bartenders create a layered effect that’s sure to wow patrons.

Ice is often overlooked, but it’s a vital part of cocktail presentation. Unique shapes or clear ice can elevate a cocktail’s presentation from ordinary to extraordinary.

In the end, it all comes down to balance. A visually stunning cocktail that tastes awful won’t impress anyone. Striking the right balance between flavour and presentation is key.

From layered Pousse-cafés to intricately garnished Martinis, the world of cocktail presentation is full of inspiration.

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Presentation

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. An unusual ingredient can add a unique twist to your cocktail and make it stand out.

In cocktail presentation, every detail matters. From the glassware to the garnish, every element should be chosen with care.

The art of cocktail presentation goes beyond just making a drink. It’s about creating a feast for the eyes and the palate, a symphony of flavours that’s visually appealing. By understanding the basics, playing with garnishes and colours, and mastering a few techniques, you can elevate your cocktails from good to great. Remember, it’s all about balance and attention to detail.

Cocktail presentation is important as it enhances the overall drinking experience by appealing to the senses even before the first sip is taken.

Garnishes not only add visual appeal but also complement or enhance the flavours of the cocktail.

Techniques include layering, using ice creatively, choosing the right glassware, and paying attention to the colour and texture of the drink.

Garnishes can range from simple citrus twists or cherries to more elaborate options like edible flowers, specially shaped ice cubes, or even mini clothespins holding small cards.

Balancing flavour and presentation is about ensuring the visual appeal doesn’t overpower the taste. The garnishes and presentation elements should complement the flavour, not detract from it.

The Art of Garnishing: Creative Ideas for Cocktail Presentation

Cocktail Bible Profile Image

Cocktail Bible

Added: 13th September 2023

When it comes to cocktails, presentation is everything. A well-garnished drink not only looks visually appealing but also enhances the overall drinking experience. The art of garnishing allows bartenders and home mixologists to showcase their creativity and elevate their cocktails to a whole new level. In this blog post, we will explore some creative ideas for cocktail presentation that will surely impress your guests.

1. Fruit Skewers

Fruit skewers are a classic and versatile garnish that can be used in various cocktails. Simply thread bite-sized pieces of fresh fruits like strawberries, pineapple, and melon onto a skewer and place it on the rim of the glass. This garnish adds a pop of color and a refreshing touch to your drink.

2. Edible Flowers

Edible flowers not only add a beautiful aesthetic to cocktails but also impart subtle flavors. Some popular edible flowers include pansies, violets, and marigolds. Float a few petals on top of your cocktail or freeze them in ice cubes for an elegant touch.

3. Herb Sprigs

Herbs like mint, rosemary, and basil can be used as garnishes to add a fragrant and aromatic element to your cocktails. Gently bruise the herb sprigs before placing them on top of your drink to release their essential oils. Not only do they look visually appealing, but they also enhance the overall flavor profile of the cocktail.

4. Citrus Zest

Citrus zest is an easy and effective way to add a burst of flavor and aroma to your cocktails. Use a zester or a peeler to create long, thin strips of lemon, lime, or orange peel. Twist the peel over the drink to release the essential oils and then place it on the rim or float it on top of the cocktail.

5. Candy Rim

A candy rim is a fun and playful garnish that adds a touch of sweetness to your cocktail. Dip the rim of the glass in simple syrup or water and then coat it with colored sugar or crushed candies. This garnish works particularly well with fruity or tropical cocktails.

6. Smoke and Fire

If you want to create a truly memorable cocktail presentation, consider incorporating smoke or fire. Use a smoking gun to infuse your drink with a smoky aroma or garnish it with a flaming citrus peel. However, it's important to exercise caution and ensure safety when working with fire.

7. Unique Ice Cubes

Ice cubes don't have to be boring. Get creative by freezing edible flowers, herbs, or fruit slices into your ice cubes. You can also experiment with different shapes and sizes using silicone molds. These unique ice cubes will not only keep your drink cold but also add an element of surprise.

8. Cocktail Umbrellas and Stirrers

Cocktail umbrellas and stirrers are classic garnishes that instantly add a tropical and festive vibe to your drinks. They are perfect for summer cocktails or tiki-inspired creations. Choose colorful and decorative options to make your cocktails stand out.

9. Dehydrated Fruit

Dehydrated fruit slices are not only visually appealing but also add a concentrated burst of flavor to your cocktails. You can easily make your own by thinly slicing fruits like oranges, lemons, or apples and drying them in a low-temperature oven. These garnishes can be placed on the rim or floated on top of the drink.

10. Customized Cocktail Picks

Add a personal touch to your cocktails by creating customized cocktail picks. Use small skewers or toothpicks and attach decorative elements like fresh berries, mini fruit slices, or even small flags with personalized messages. These unique garnishes will make your guests feel special and add a memorable touch to their drinking experience.

Remember, garnishing is an art form, and the possibilities are endless. Don't be afraid to experiment and let your creativity shine. The next time you make a cocktail, take a moment to think about how you can elevate its presentation and surprise your guests with a visually stunning and delicious drink.

14 Unique Cocktail Garnishes From Bars Around The US

Various garnishes in glasses

Cocktails are more than just a refreshing and delicious beverage; they're a complete sensory experience, from the taste and texture to the presentation. In fact, as a bartender in your home, garnishes are a great way to take your concoctions from good to memorable . They can also offer an exciting spin on an average night with drinks and friends. For example, offering a DIY garnish platter provides an interactive way to elevate simple beverages. However, while we love a green olive for garnish in our martini , we also love a twist on the classics.

Bartenders worldwide are taking cocktail toppers and presentations to a whole new level, resulting in a feast for the eyes and the palate. From billowing smoke to ant salt rims and everything in between, striking garnishes and styles transform the humble mixed drink into a work of art. Ordering these beverages is more than just an opportunity to taste a delicious cocktail; it is sippable artistry.

Billowing smoke emerging from a tiki head draws you in

The tiki head used to house the E Ho'o Pau Mai Tai at Bar Leather Apron is a fascinating and beautiful part of its presentation. It doubles as a stage for the drink and a work of art. The item has intricate details that help make this stunning piece something you won't soon forget. In addition, its carvings add an exotic touch to the cocktail.

However, what sets this drink apart is the billowing kiawe wood smoke escaping from the tiki head's intricate openings. It adds an extra layer of intrigue to the beverage before you even lift it from its base, making it a true showstopper. Like any special garnish, revealing your cocktail from smokey artwork like this is an experience in itself. The E Ho'o Pau Mai Tai symbolizes the tropical paradise you can enjoy on the island of Oahu; every detail is carefully crafted to create a memorable sip.

Black ant salt offers a fascinating rim garnish

La Cava del Tequila, a hot spot in Epcot's World Showcase in Walt Disney World, is well known for its delicious selection of tequilas and creative cocktails. Though there are many to choose from, three stand out for one reason. The Wild One, Piña Loca, and Dragones Top Shelf specialty drinks all offer individual flavor profiles, but you'll probably remember them best for their distinctive salt rims made with real black ants.

It's an intriguing twist on the traditional salt rim, typically paired with margaritas and other tequila-based beverages. It offers a tangy, slightly sour flavor and is a delicious addition to the already impressive collection of La Cava's drinks. So whether you're sipping on The Wild One, Piña Loca, or Dragones Top Shelf, the blank ant salt rim adds a memorable and distinctive touch that will leave you wanting more. And with seasonal cocktails featuring the garnish rotating throughout the year, there's always something new to try with this unique addition.

Smoked herbs awaken your taste buds

Bigfire's Rosemary Salty Dog cocktail at the Universal CityWalk in Florida is a refreshing and distinctive beverage that blends Wheatley vodka and grapefruit juice. Visually stunning, it also offers a delicious mix of flavors. To finish the cocktail, the rim of the glass is coated with smoked salt, which adds a savory flavor to the drink. Then, right before serving, the rosemary is lit aflame, creating a dramatic visual effect and infusing the beverage with the fragrance of smoky, herbal notes. As a result, you'll get a distinctly earthy flavor and aroma in the first few sips. The rosemary is not just a garnish in this cocktail but an integral ingredient that adds depth and complexity to the taste.

The Rosemary Salty Dog is a perfectly balanced drink with a pleasant tartness, and its herbal addition will also make you believe in smoked herbs' power in cocktails.

Chicken takes Bloody Marys to the next level

Sobelman's Bloody Beast cocktail is an eye-catching, over-the-top beverage with arguably ridiculous garnishes. This monstrous drink can be found in the pub's locations in Milwaukee and Waukesha, Wisconsin. Its garnishes are not for the faint of heart; it features an array of ingredients, including veggies, sausages, cheeses, cheeseburger sliders, bacon-wrapped cheese balls, and even a whole chicken.

A wide variety of Bloody Mary variations is featured on Sobelman's menu, but this one is undoubtedly the most impressive. Served atop the cocktail, the garnishes make up a true feast for the eyes and the taste buds. Large and striking, they sit high above the rim of the glass. At a price tag of $60, this Bloody Mary is all you'll need to order since it's a whole meal and drink.

Every part of this assortment offers exceptional flavor and texture: The pickled Polish sausage provides tang, while the Colby-jack cheese adds a creamy and rich texture. The shrimp is plump and juicy, and the lemon adds a bright and citrusy note. The chicken, however, is the real star of the show. This fried bird is the most indulgent element of the menu item, making Sobelman's home to one of the most iconic garnishes in the cocktail world.

Sprinkles create a festive feel

Sprinkles are a fun way to add a touch of whimsy to any cocktail, and the Sugar Cookie Martiniat Towne Tavern & Tap is a perfect example of this sweet garnish in action. Here, you'll enjoy a drink that isn't just playful; it's also sure to get you into the seasonal festivities with the brightness and fun texture the sprinkles add to the beverage.

As for the base cocktail, the combination of vanilla vodka, chocolate liqueur, Irish cream, and butterscotch liqueur creates a rich and indulgent flavor profile that pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the sprinkle garnish. The martini is a delightful drink that Towne Tavern & Tap patrons enjoy ordering throughout the year, and it's not hard to see why. With its creamy texture and deliciously sugary flavor reminiscent of biting into a freshly baked treat, this beverage will surely be an ideal choice for anyone with a sweet tooth. Plus, the sprinkles can change for different holidays, so it's always in season. At Towne Tavern & Tap, you may even spot some other fun rim garnishes: The Candy Cane Martini, for example, gets a nice helping of candy cane bits around the rim.

Dry ice makes any cocktail mysterious

The Purple Mist at Kaizen is an exquisite drink that marries various flavors and aromas to create a breathtaking experience. This cocktail combines Japanese gin, crème de violet, lavender, cherry tomato, citrus, and mint to establish an intriguing blend of balanced sweet and savory flavors. But its beautiful and elaborate presentation really sets it apart. The beverage comes in a lovely glass on top of a tray adorned with gorgeous flowers, creating a sense of elegance and sophistication. Before the magic begins, it already feels special.

As your bartender pours water onto the tray, the dry ice is activated, creating a magical mist that envelops the glass, spills over the platter, and rushes onto the bar. It adds a touch of drama to the presentation. The lavender taste of this drink is prominent, adding to the sensory experience and making the cocktail even more captivating.

Bubbles bring pops of childlike whimsy

A charming concoction called the Eden is available at Allegory, a speakeasy inside Eaton. The drink combines Tanqueray 10 gin with oranges, piloncillo, and benzoin. Clarified and carbonated, it offers a playful take on the classic Ramos Gin Fizz. The cocktail is a delicious blend of sweet and tangy flavors. Reclaimed mandarin oranges give this beverage a bright, citrusy flavor, while the piloncillo provides a balancing sweetness to the gin. Additionally, the benzoin adds a subtle and aromatic note.

However, the bubbles within the drink are the standout feature of Eden. They add a layer of texture, creating a playful and whimsical experience that will delight anyone who tries it. Moreover, the component makes the cocktail feel light and refreshing, almost like an orange creamsicle or Italian soda. Bubbles also play a starring role in this beverage as a unique garnish, which adds a whimsical touch to the fizzy concoction.

Cards offer a sense of intrigue

Bowen Houseoffers an exciting cocktail known as the Smokin' Hot Italian, which boasts a blend of bold and flavorful ingredients. The drink features a combination of high-quality spirits, including Novo Fogo Silver Cachaça and Verde Mezcal Amarás, resulting in a complex and delicious base. Fresh rosemary and lemon juice are added to enhance the beverage's flavor profile, contributing to a bright and herbaceous taste.

What sets this cocktail apart is its dramatic presentation. The drink has a burning card clipped to the glass, creating a smoky aroma and visual flair. The flaming garnish makes the drink striking to the eye but serves a practical purpose too. As it burns, it releases fragrant smoke that infuses the cocktail with a subtle hint of it. As a result, the beverage's flavor is enhanced, with additional layers of complexity and depth. Furthermore, the aroma can stimulate the senses and create a more immersive drinking experience.

Cereal adds a tasty treat

Incorporating a surprising garnish of cocoa-puffed cereal, the Weekend at Vinnie's cocktail from Bar Margot is a playful drink. The beverage combines bourbon, cognac, chicory, and milk to create a rich and complex flavor profile. At the same time, the chocolate puffs add a subtle sweetness and crunchy texture that balances out the boldness of the alcohol.

While using cereal as a garnish is not a new concept, Bar Margot's take on it is exceptionally creative, adding a visual element to the drink and complementing the cocoa notes in the concoction. The addition also reflects the restaurant's approach to cocktails, which is focused on playful flavors that create a sense of nostalgia and fun, making the drinking experience more memorable. Plus, as the cereal soaks up some of the liquid, it becomes softer and adds a delightful chewiness to each sip. This unique characteristic makes the beverage even more enjoyable.

Outdoor scenery makes garnishing a drink an art form

Rokc, located in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood of Upper Manhattan, is known for its expertly crafted cocktails and impressive presentations. In addition to serving drinks in traditional glasses, the bar uses outdoor scenes as garnishes to add an extra level of visual interest to their beverages.

Aside from the special presentation, Rokc is known for its attention to detail and precise cocktail-making techniques. In addition, bartending master Shige Kabashima brings a sense of humor and warmth to the bar, making it a fabulous spot for locals and visitors.

Overall, Rokc's use of outdoor scenes as garnishes adds an element of whimsy and playfulness to their cocktails while maintaining a high quality and craftsmanship level. They vary in the settings presented, but even if the miniature set on a particular drink doesn't interest you, the bar has plenty of other beverages with equally exciting garnishes. All told, the creativity here is unmatched.

Toy sharks invite drama

If you're looking for a cocktail that will make a splash in New Orleans, the Shark Attack drink from Tropical Isle is a must-try. It is delicious and comes with a fun and special presentation that's guaranteed to make your night out on Bourbon Street unforgettable.

The centerpiece of the beverage is the toy shark that comes with it. This cute and colorful item is put in the cup as if it's diving in. When the drink is served, the bartenders at Tropical Isle make plenty of sounds to signal that a "shark attack" is underway. As the mayhem ensures, the toy releases a burst of "blood" into the drink, creating a dramatic, entertaining, and Instagram-worthy effect.

But the presentation is not the only reason the Shark Attack is so popular. The cocktail is a refreshing and fruity mix made with vodka, soda water, sour mix, and a splash of grenadine. It's the perfect beverage to cool down on a hot New Orleans day, and its tropical flavors will transport you to a beachside paradise.

Movie snacks offer nostalgia

The Movie Night Float is a memorable cocktail served at Canon that combines classic flavors with unexpected twists. This mixed drink has bourbon, root beer , popcorn ice cream, fernet, bitters, and a red vine straw. The garnishes add an extra layer of flavor and texture to the beverage.

The Red Vine, a popular movie snack, is a fun and whimsical add-on that pays homage to classic treats. It also adds a sweet and fruity flavor to the cocktail as you sip it. Additionally, the candy brings a pop of color to the drink, making it visually appealing and adding to the overall experience of the beverage.

Another distinctive element of the Movie Night Float is the popcorn ice cream. This creamy, cold dessert is made with real popcorn, giving it a savory and salty flavor that pairs with the sweet and spicy flavors of the bourbon and root beer. Carefully added on top of the drink, the ice cream creates a frothy and creamy layer that enhances the texture and mouthfeel of the base. The red vine straw and popcorn ice cream garnishes create a playful and nostalgic vibe that perfectly complements the cocktail's flavors.

Bathtubs offer a luxurious presentation

The Champagne Bubble Bath at Gatsby's is a cool-looking drink that will certainly be memorable because of its unique garnish and presentation. The cocktail will arrive on a silver platter in a miniature porcelain bathtub decorated with rose petals and decadent chocolate. The metal straw that comes with the beverage doubles as a spoon, which can be used to scoop the mojito bubbles off the top of the drink. These bubbles add a fun and playful element, making the cocktail even more enjoyable to sip on. It's whimsical and playful, reminiscent of a luxurious spa experience or even the childhood bath of your dreams.

The base is a delicious combination of gin, Aperol, strawberry rose syrup, muddled blood orange, and champagne. With carefully balanced flavors to create a refreshing and complex cocktail, we love this one for the perfect sip on a hot summer day.

Unique dispensers make drinks with friends fun

The Dillinger Escape Plan from The Merchant is a refreshing cocktail perfect for sharing with friends. The drink is made with gin, Ketel One cucumber vodka, lemon, dill, and cucumber, creating a balanced herbaceous and citrusy flavor profile.

But what ultimately sets this beverage apart is the dispenser it comes with. The cocktail is served in a glass cone, and with the turn of a knob, it pours from the bottom of the vessel, creating a bewitching and entertaining way to enjoy your mixed drink. The dispenser adds a playful and interactive element to the experience, making it even more memorable.

The Merchant is a hidden-away speakeasy bar, adding to the allure and excitement of enjoying a cocktail like the Dillinger Escape Plan. It is tucked away from the city's bustling streets, creating a cozy and intimate atmosphere perfect for enjoying a drink with others.

The art of cocktail presentation and drink garnishing has become increasingly popular in recent years, with bartenders and mixologists putting just as much effort into the visual aspect of their drinks as the taste. In this article, we’ll delve into the world of cocktail presentation and garnishing , exploring the history, techniques, and trends.

cool cocktail presentation

Historically, cocktails were often served in simple glasses without any adornment. It wasn’t until the mid-20th century that bartenders began to experiment with adding decorations to their drinks, with the introduction of maraschino cherries, citrus peels, and olives. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that cocktail garnishing really took off, with bartenders and mixologists beginning to incorporate more elaborate and creative decorations into their drinks.

Purpose of Cocktail Garnishing

The purpose of cocktail garnishing is twofold: to enhance the visual appeal of the drink and to add a layer of flavor or aroma. The garnish can be used to complement or contrast the flavors in the drink, or to provide a hint of a particular ingredient that’s used in the cocktail.

There are several different types of garnishes that can be used in cocktails, including fruit peels, herbs, flowers, spices, and even edible gold or silver leaf. Citrus peels are perhaps the most common type of garnish, with lemon, lime, and orange peels used to add a burst of flavor and a pop of color to the drink. Herbs such as mint, basil, and rosemary can also be used to add flavor and aroma, while flowers like violets and roses can be used to add a touch of elegance and sophistication.

The presentation of the cocktail is also an important aspect of the overall drinking experience. A well-presented cocktail can make a big impression and add to the enjoyment of the drink. Presentation can include the choice of glassware, the way the drink is served, and the decorations used.

The choice of glassware is important in cocktail presentation , as it can help to enhance the visual appeal of the drink. For example, a martini should be served in a stemmed glass to showcase the clarity of the liquid and the garnish, while a classic Old Fashioned is best served in a short tumbler to highlight the color of the drink and the ice cube.

The way the drink is served is also an important aspect of presentation. Some cocktails are best served straight up, while others are better suited to being served over ice or with a splash of soda. The choice of serving method should take into account the ingredients and flavors of the cocktail, as well as the occasion and setting.

When it comes to decoration, there are several techniques that can be used to create visually stunning cocktails. One popular technique is the use of edible flowers, which can be used to add a pop of color and a touch of elegance to the drink. Other techniques include the use of fruit peels, which can be twisted or curled to create a visually interesting garnish, and the use of ice cubes that are infused with fruit, herbs, or edible flowers.

One trend that has emerged in recent years is the use of molecular mixology techniques to create innovative and visually stunning cocktails. Molecular mixology involves the use of science and technology to manipulate the ingredients in a cocktail, creating new textures, flavors, and appearances. Techniques such as foaming, gelling, and smoking can be used to create drinks that are truly unique and visually striking.

In addition to the aesthetic benefits of cocktail presentation and garnishing, there are also practical considerations. A well-garnished drink can help to mask any imperfections in the drink itself, while also making it easier to drink. For example, a garnish of fruit peel can help to balance the sweetness of a cocktail while also providing a handle for the drinker to hold onto while sipping. Similarly, a large ice cube or sphere can help to slow down the melting of the ice, keeping the drink colder for longer.

When it comes to creating visually stunning cocktails, it’s important to keep in mind the balance between form and function. While it’s tempting to add as many decorations and garnishes as possible, it’s important to ensure that the drink remains easy to drink and enjoyable. The decorations should complement the drink rather than overpower it.

Another important consideration when it comes to cocktail presentation and garnishing is the environmental impact. Many cocktail decorations are made from single-use plastics, which can contribute to pollution and harm the environment. As such, it’s important to consider using sustainable alternatives, such as metal or bamboo straws, or opting for decorations that are edible or compostable.

Cocktail presentation and garnishing is an art form that has evolved over time, with bartenders and mixologists pushing the boundaries of creativity to create visually stunning and delicious drinks. The choice of garnish and presentation can have a significant impact on the overall drinking experience, adding layers of flavor and aroma, enhancing the visual appeal, and even improving the practical aspects of the drink.

As the trend towards sustainable living continues to grow, it’s important to consider the environmental impact of cocktail decoration and to explore sustainable alternatives. Whether you’re a professional bartender or a home mixologist, the art of cocktail presentation and garnishing offers endless opportunities for experimentation and creativity and is sure to delight your guests and elevate your drinking experience.

To get started with cocktail presentation and garnishing, it’s important to first understand the basic principles of balance and harmony in cocktail-making. A good cocktail should have a balance of flavors, with no single ingredient overpowering the others. The garnish should complement and enhance the flavors in the drink, rather than compete with them.

When it comes to choosing a garnish, consider the flavor profile of the cocktail. For example, a spicy cocktail like a Margarita might benefit from a garnish of fresh chili or a salt and chili rim. A fruity cocktail like a daiquiri might be enhanced by a garnish of fresh berries or a wedge of citrus. A savory cocktail like a Bloody Mary might benefit from a garnish of bacon or pickled vegetables.

The choice of glassware is also an important consideration in cocktail presentation. Different glasses can showcase different aspects of the drink, from the color and clarity of the liquid to the garnish and ice. For example, a tall glass like a Collins or Highball glass can showcase a tall, refreshing drink, while a short glass like an Old Fashioned glass can showcase a strong, spirit-forward cocktail.

Ice is also an important consideration in cocktail presentation. A large ice cube or sphere can add visual interest to a drink, as well as slowing down the melting process and keeping the drink colder for longer. You can also experiment with using flavored or infused ice cubes, such as coffee or tea-infused ice cubes, for a unique twist.

When it comes to actually garnishing the cocktail, there are several techniques you can use to create visually stunning drinks . For example, you can use a vegetable peeler to create long, thin strips of citrus peel, which can be twisted or curled for a visually interesting garnish. You can also experiment with using fresh herbs like mint, rosemary, or thyme, either as a garnish or muddled into the drink for added flavor.

Another popular technique is the use of edible flowers, which can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to a cocktail. Some popular edible flowers include violets, roses, and hibiscus. Just be sure to choose flowers that are safe to eat and have not been treated with any harmful chemicals.

Finally, it’s important to consider the overall aesthetic of the drink. The presentation should be visually appealing, with the garnish and decorations enhancing the overall experience. Think about the colors and textures of the garnish, as well as the placement of the decorations on the glass. You can also experiment with using different lighting or backdrops to showcase the cocktail in a unique and interesting way.

The Art of Cocktail Presentation: Garnishes

While it’s easy to forget when making drinks at home, a garnish is the finishing touch on a great cocktail. A garnish can add new flavors and aromatics as well as visual appeal—an Old Fashioned just isn’t the same without a cherry and orange slice, a Dirty Martini requires an olive or two, and a Margarita without a salted rim feels sacrilegious. But garnishes are also a chance to get creative with the look and taste of your drinks. From lime wheels to edible flowers and smoke, thoughtful garnishes take cocktails to new levels.

The Magic of Citrus Peel

A citrus peel or citrus twist is one of the most popular drink garnishes. A tried and true classic, it adds a pop of color and bright fragrance that tempers sweeter drinks and complements the herbaceous qualities of spirits like gin. Whether you prefer the striking look of a broad strip of orange or lemon peel or the delicate appeal of a thin spiral twist, make sure you twist the peel to express the citrus oils over the surface of your drink. Drape the peel over the rim of your cocktail glass or lay it along the edge to enhance the visual appeal.

Herbs and Flowers

Fresh herbs and edible flowers are a simple way to make drinks stand out. A sprig of rosemary can bring a savory, aromatic quality to a simple Gin & Tonic, and a single pansy floating on the surface of a Daiquiri instantly elevates the presentation. Flowering thyme and mint bring a wild, overgrown garden look to highballs and add delicate herbal scents to the drink. When using herbs, smack them gently against your hand to release the aromatic oils before garnishing your drink.

Salted or Sugared Rims

Rimming a cocktail glass with sugar or salt is a fun addition to a drink. The most common example of this is a Margarita, but the Salty Dog and Bloody Mary both have a salted rim, while the Brandy Crusta or Sidecar feature a sugared rim. Take this a step further and add unique flavors that complement your cocktail: infuse sugar with lime or lemon zest, add chili powder to salt for a spicy Margarita, or concoct your own blend of spices, herbs, or other seasonings. To rim a glass, moisten the rim with water or juice and dip it into a plate with a layer of sugar, salt,  or seasoning. Experiment with ingredients and flavor combinations to make something one-of-a-kind.

Fresh and Preserved Fruit

Lime wheels, dehydrated orange slices, or cherries skewered on a cocktail pick are just a few examples of how to incorporate fruit into your garnishes. From a cocktail cherry sitting at the bottom of a coup glass to a wedge of pineapple perched on the rim, fruit garnishes add texture and flavor to cocktails. Fruit can be combined with other garnishes to create an enticing ensemble of aromas and colors: think a cocktail pick with a blueberry and lemon peel or a slice of nectarine nestled in a bouquet of fresh mint. Cucumbers, chilis, cherry tomatoes, and other more savory ingredients are also a fantastic way to elevate a simple drink.

A Hint of Smoke

Not quite a garnish, not quite an ingredient—smoke is growing in popularity as a cocktail component. While you can include liquid smoke as an ingredient when building a drink, sometimes a drink calls for a more subtle touch of smoke. Smoked cocktail kits are the perfect way to do this—whether you rinse the glass with smoke or infuse the cocktail itself, a slightly smoked flavor can enhance the flavor of cocktails like an Old Fashioned or a mezcal-based drink and create a dramatic presentation.

Viski Alchemi Single Serve Smoked Cocktail Kit

Whether you’re new to mixing drinks or are an experienced mixologist, garnishes are a great way to express your creativity and practice the art of cocktail presentation. A dash of bitters on top of the foam of a Whiskey Sour, a spritz of absinthe from an atomizer —there are countless ways to layer complex notes in a cocktail. Next time you’re making a classic drink, try a unique garnish and see how it changes your drink experience.

The Art of the Cocktail Garnish

Categories Garnishes , Making Your Own Cocktails

If it’s possible that there’s one thing I’ve become a bit known for in my little corner of the internet, it’s making a pretty cocktail.

As a photographer and a highly visual person, I have always been immediately drawn to a drink (or a plate, for that matter) that is beautifully presented.

It’s in our nature to be drawn to beauty, to seek it, and even to be influenced by it. In many ways, beauty truly is power. It has a special power over us, and it can truly improve our experiences.

Let’s take a deep dive into the power of the cocktail garnish to enhance our drinking experience, then we’ll learn all about the different kinds of garnishes and what they’re for!

  Why do we garnish cocktails?

Garnishes add visual appeal as well as aromatics and subtle flavors to cocktails. These small elements can have a big impact on the finished drink, so don’t skip them!

At first glance, it might not seem like much, but the way a cocktail is presented to us is a critical component of the drinking experience.

We begin the experience with the preparation or ordering of the cocktail, developing anticipation.

As the drink is carefully prepared, our senses begin to take in all of the sights, smells, sounds, and feel of the process. Finally, once shaken or stirred and strained, we garnish.

A delicate spray of citrus oils from a twist, a single plump green olive submerged in a bath of gin and vermouth, a drip of heavenly Luxardo cherry syrup from three perfect, glistening cherries – these are small moments that crystallize the cocktail crafting experience and signify completion.

The garnish is the final touch, meant to accentuate the drink’s flavors, tie them together, contrast with them, or perfectly complement them.

Vessel + garnish = presentation

Now, we take in the drink with our eyes. Like picking out our clothes, the garnish styles the drink and helps to showcase a bit of its personality.

Think of a petite, sharply pointed lemon twist perched on a long-stemmed up serve, or an abundance of fresh mint and edible flowers atop a mountain of crushed ice in a tiki mug.

Our drinking experience is activated with taking in the beauty of the finished cocktail, and then transformed with our first sip.

The relationship between the look, feel, scent, and taste of a cocktail is like a carefully crafted dance, and when perfectly balanced and executed well, we go from simply having a drink to really having an experience .

If you’ve ever made or been served a really memorable cocktail that just stuck with you, that’s what I’m talking about here.

These cocktail memories bring to mind the good company or events of the evening, in the same way that a certain song or scent can instantly transport us back to another time.

Our memories and emotions are wrapped up in our senses. And it’s precisely because it provides a complete sensory experience that drinking a cocktail can be such an incredibly enjoyable thing.

What is a garnish, anyway?

A garnish is defined as a decoration, an embellishment, an accent.

And while I agree with this basic definition, I think that cocktail garnishes are much more than that. Garnishes can serve many purposes.

They can be simple or extravagant, edible or inedible, large or small, dropped in a drink or perhaps discarded altogether.

In a bar environment, it makes sense to keep things mostly practical, but as a home mixologist, I can experiment endlessly. (Which, full disclosure, is pretty much what I do all day.)

Presentation = marketing. In a bar, the presentation of a cocktail should enhance the drinking experience and also help to market the drink.

Garnishes and the overall cocktail presentation are really a form of marketing. Who doesn’t love a beautiful, even Instagrammable drink?

Presentation affects perception

What continues to fascinate me is the relationship between liquid, vessel, and garnish, and how when these three things align perfectly, the experience can be extraordinary.

I’m always amazed by how presentation affects perception, and how our perception can be greatly influenced by seemingly very small details.

In many ways, creating a cocktail has become a deeply fulfilling thing for me, and the more I’ve experimented and explored the rich history of cocktails, the more I’ve come to understand just what an art form a well-crafted drink really is.

The point is this: a good drink is much more than just the sum of its parts! Now, on to the garnishes.

Types of cocktail garnishes

Let’s talk about the types of garnishes. I like to classify them by basic groups: twists, fruit, leaves, flowers, food, and objects .

I keep twists separate from other fruit garnishes because their purpose is specifically to add the oils from the citrus peel to the drink, rather than to just add aroma or visual appeal.

an orange cocktail in a coupe glass with a carved orange peel

The twist and other citrus peel garnishes

Probably the most common cocktail garnish, the citrus twist is a very simple and yet very special thing. Gently peel off a strip of orange rind with a vegetable peeler or a sharp knife, fold the edges inward with peel facing out and watch as a mist of glistening citrus oils spray from the peel.

This simple application of oils can greatly enhance the flavors of a cocktail, and it can also dramatically cut through the sweetness of syrups or liqueurs. It’s a magical thing, really.

Learn how to make several of these garnishes step-by-step in my Guide to Citrus Peel Cocktail Garnishes !

A great example of this is to pour a simple glass of sweet vermouth, any brand, on the rocks. Tasting it before and after adding a lemon twist is one of the quickest and easiest ways to understand the power of the twist.

What may have seemed quite sweet before now tastes perfectly balanced, and the citrus aroma filling the glass adds opens up and adds depth to the flavors of the vermouth.

This category of cocktail garnish includes everything from an orange slice in an Aperol Spritz to cocktail cherries in a Manhattan to a wedge of pineapple in a Pina Colada .

Fruit garnishes are great for adding a subtle fresh fruit flavor and aroma to the finished drink, and they often give us a visual cue about what flavors are in the glass.

In the case of cocktail cherries like maraschino or brandied cherries, they can offer a contrasting sweetness that is incredibly satisfying in a spirit-forward serve like a Vieux Carre , or in a sour-style cocktail like a Whiskey Sour.

Are you supposed to eat a fruit cocktail garnish?

Sure! This is really your call. When it comes to garnishes like citrus slices or wheels, you may or may not care to take a bite.

But if your drink is adorned with a wedge of fresh pineapple or watermelon, why not enjoy the entire experience?

Cocktail cherries and olives are the perfect way to end a cocktail, so if you’ve only got one, save that single bite for your last sip.

Examples of fruit garnishes are:

  • Citrus slices, wedges, and wheels
  • Cocktail cherries (maraschino, brandied, etc.)
  • Pineapple wedges or chunks
  • Melon wedges or balls
  • Dragon fruit balls (scooped with a melon-baller)
  • Half a passion fruit, floated on top of the drink
  • Cucumber ribbons (cut lengthwise with a vegetable peeler)
  • Fresh coconut meat cut into shapes with cookie cutters
  • An apple, pear, or peach fan
  • Berries skewered on a cocktail pick
  • Dried fruits like apricots

an orange drink in a rocks glass with mint

This category includes everything from a fresh bunch of mint to pineapple fronds.

The leaves of herbs like rosemary, thyme, or lavender add flavor and aroma, while leaves like pineapple are used purely for their visual appeal and to alert the drinker to a flavor present in the drink.

Because I love to forage for wild edibles, I’m always discovering new plants to use either in flavoring or garnishing a cocktail. A favorite is the super common wood sorrel, a small green plant with characteristic shamrock-shaped leaves that taste lemony.

It goes without saying that you should always do your research before eating any wild plant, but wood sorrel is a nice safe plant to start with because there aren’t any poisonous plants that resemble it. You can read more on this subject here .

Personally, I love leaf garnishes. Greenery can make a cocktail look lush and fresh, while pleasing, symmetrical patterns draw the eye. I like to combine leaves with fruit or flowers to enhance the lush factor.

A great taste test for this category of garnish is mint. The addition of mint adds a cool freshness that makes many, many cocktails taste even better, but a great example is a classic Mai Tai (2 oz aged rum, .75 oz lime, .5 oz curacao, .25 oz orgeat, .25 oz simple syrup).

Taste it before and after adding a fresh sprig of mint and you’ll be sure to notice how the mint adds a whole new dimension to the drink!

Here are some great leaf garnish options to try:

  • Wood sorrel
  • Pineapple leaves
  • Amaranth leaves
  • Hibiscus leaves
  • Makrut lime leaf
  • Kinome leaf

a dark green cocktail in a stemmed glass garnished with many flowers

Ah, edible flowers. Of all the things I’ve been intrigued by or obsessed over in my life, edible flowers are one I keep returning to over and over again.

Before embarking on the full-time photographer and blogger life, I owned a small natural skin care line. I spent years researching botanicals for their benefits for skin and health, and I always found flowering plants to be especially inspiring.

Today, learning about and growing plants and flowers that are good to eat has become a real passion of mine and I also enjoy sharing what I’ve learned.

Not all flowers are appropriate cocktail garnishes

Before we get into this category, let’s talk about safety and why it’s a concern.

The internet (and especially places like Pinterest and Instagram) are filled with all kinds of pretty images of food (for example, wedding cakes) decorated with seemingly harmless flowers.

However, some of the flowers in these pretty images are not at all safe to eat, and some of these images are circulated endlessly. This spreads bad information, and can turn into a real problem.

It’s important to know that plenty of common flowers and houseplants are not safe to eat or have contact with your food, and some are actually quite dangerous.

Let’s think for a moment about a substance containing toxic chemical compounds sitting in a bath of alcohol – a solvent. This could quickly turn a pretty drink into a deadly cocktail.

So always do your research, purchase from trusted sources, and maybe most importantly, don’t assume that something is edible just because you’ve seen it on social media!

Here’s a quick guide to edible flowers . There are more edible flowers than listed there, but it covers the basics.

You can order edible flowers online, buy them at local markets, or even grow your own. There’s a wide variety to choose from, and you can pick them for flavor, aroma, or just for their beauty.

Some of my favorites are lavender, begonias, dianthus, roses, and orchids. There is nothing quite like a beautiful, delicate flower adorning a fancy coupe.

Some flowers are sweet (for example, violets), some spicy (nasturtiums), some citrusy (begonias), some vegetal (hostas). You can pair your edible flowers with your drinks based on their appearance, scent, or flavor, but I find that most folks skip actually eating floral garnishes, even if they know they can eat them.

Check out my edible flower guide for more info and inspiration. Here are some favorites to get you started:

  • Pansies and violas
  • Nasturtiums
  • Dianthus and carnations
  • Herb blossoms, such as basil, mint, or rosemary

a pink drink in a stemless martini glass garnished with a mini sandwich and flowers

This is a really fun category and consists of, well, food. I recently made a friend’s peanut butter and jelly-inspired cocktail that called for a sandwich garnish and it was AWESOME.

Who doesn’t love a cocktail that comes with a snack?? Some other food based garnishes include paper cups of nuts clipped to drinks, the meal in a glass Bloody Marys adorned with hot wings or whole fried chickens, and lovely after dinner drinks served with a wedge of dark chocolate.

The possibilities are pretty much endless, and only limited by the real estate of your glassware, or your appetite, or your creativity. I love creating food and drink pairings, so this category of garnish is one I’ve explored time and again.

Here’s a list of fun ideas:

Fun food garnish + cocktail pairings

  • Fried finger foods paired with Bloody Marys (or Bloody Marias or Red Snappers)
  • Pickled vegetables like asparagus paired with a Red Snapper or a Martini
  • Dark chocolate paired with spirit-forward, after dinner style drinks like a Cognac Old Fashioned
  • Blue cheese stuffed olives in a classic gin Martini
  • A skewer of feta and olives in a dirty Martini
  • A paper cup of salty popcorn or peanuts to accompany a strong or sweet drink
  • A toast point with marmalade to garnish a classic Breakfast Martini
  • Miniature tea sandwiches paired with tea-based or brunch style cocktails
  • Freshly grated nutmeg on a Brandy Alexander
  • Cocktail onions in a Gibson Martini

a silver metal mug decorated with a chicken feather and a lime peel

The final category is reserved for items that serve one purpose: to add visual appeal.

These objects are not edible, and that’s (hopefully?) clearly understood. They adorn a cocktail in order to tell a story, add some personality, or to get a laugh.

Some interesting object garnishes I’ve seen are:

  • Playing cards
  • Tiny rubber duckies
  • Origami planes or animals
  • Paper umbrellas

Hello, What is the purple cocktail with the blueberry and dragonfruit garnish? It looks amazing and I would love to make it!

Sunday 4th of December 2022

Hi Julie, it’s a simple mix of 2 oz gin, 1 oz lemon juice, and 1 oz butterfly pea tea simple syrup.

9 Clever and Sometimes Over-the-Top Cocktail Glasses Being Used Around the Country

Get your camera ready for these creative vessels.

When is a glass more than just a glass? When it’s popping with personality and can draw attention from across the room—and across the country. You drink with your eyes, first. And creative drinking vessels have grown ever more elaborate in recent years, making for a cocktail experience that’s sometimes silly but always memorable. These are nine of the wackiest cocktail vessels found in bars around the U.S.

Ay, Chihuahua (701West, New York)

Presented on a bed of wheatgrass and edible flowers, this glass squash holds Salvatore Tafuri’s refined take on a Spicy Margarita. Tinged with shishito pepper syrup and a dropper of jalapeño tincture, its base is long-aged Don Julio 1942 tequila. It’s almost too pretty to drink, but you’ll push forward to sample the contents within.

Den After Dark (Sycamore Den, San Diego)

We wouldn’t recommend drinking from just any lamp—certainly not the one sitting on your desk—but the globe-shaped lamp used at Sycamore Den is specially designed for this purpose. It even has four portholes to hold multicolored Pyrex straws, which means you can share the cocktail with one-to-three friends. The drink inside was created by Jesse Ross, and it brings together fresh tangerine and lime juices, clove syrup, Jägermeister and vodka.

Gummi Bear (Second Best, Detroit)

Second Best

Will Lee, the beverage director of Second Best and Grey Ghost in Detroit, was inspired by dive bar shots when creating this fruity concoction. He starts with a house-made raspberry-infused vodka, then mixes in peach schnapps, citrus and 7Up and serves it over pebbled ice in a honey bear. The only question is if you should hug it or drink it. Though no one said you can’t do both.

If Can, Can (Trailblazer Tavern, San Francisco)

Trailblazer Tavern

At Trailblazer Tavern in San Francisco’s Salesforce Building, the SPAM for musubi is made in-house. But the restaurant pays cheeky homage to the Hawaiian classic in the form of a refreshing drink created by Brian Means and served in a SPAM can at happy hour. Featuring rum, lime, pineapple and orgeat, its hits all the right tropical notes—and no, it doesn't contain any pork products.

Loaded to the Gunwalls (The Aviary, Chicago)

The Aviary

Is it a cocktail? A ship in a bottle? At The Aviary, it’s both, with a dramatic presentation to match the vessel. The drink brings together house-made hazelnut orgeat with Batavia arrack, bitters, pineapple and lime. Before pouring out the bottle’s contents, the server sprays a rum-and-mace tincture through a candle flame onto the ceramic serving cup. The fun, fiery presentation isn’t just for show—it imbues your cocktail with fiery aromatics as you sip.

Mule (Roof at Park South, New York)

Rafa García Febles takes this spin on the Moscow Mule literally. He concocts the drink, made with turmeric-infused vodka, ginger liqueur, demerara syrup, lime and ginger beer, in a white ceramic mule garnished with a flower. The sturdy vessel houses enough liquid to serve four people.

Pickleback (The Cottonmouth Club, Houston)

The method here is “shoot-shoot-chomp,” says Michael Neff, bar director of The Cottonmouth Club. You start with a shot of Slane Irish whiskey, and then chase it with a dram of dill pickle juice served in a hollowed-out pickle. So, this Pickleback is part drink, part snack. “It definitely has its own fan club at this point,” says Neff.

Studio 54 (Canon, Seattle)

Jamie Boudreau often starts with the vessel, not the recipe, when crafting drinks for his iconic Seattle bar Canon. He says he just “scours the web looking for unusual items that could hold liquids.” Here, a disco ball is filled with dark rum, cherry cola, falernum and lime, plus a heavy dose of Angostura bitters. Because nothing signals the start of a good party like a disco ball ... that's filled with rum.

The Waterbury Royale (Freehold, New York City)

Sure, you’ve shared a punch bowl. But what about a swan? At Freehold in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood, this large-format drink, created by Brad Gallagher and Brice Jones, refreshes a crowd, bringing together fresh watermelon juice, lime, sparkling wine and vodka. For a bit of extra fun, it’s garnished with watermelon Sour Patch Kids in addition to lime wedges.

A cocktail garnished excellently makes the consumer feel like they’re about to sip on something special. It can revamp a simple beverage into a sublime experience awash with fancy embellishments catching your eye and setting the mood for the thrilling taste to follow.

Enhancing Flavors

Believe it or not, garnishes aren’t just decoration—they can enhance a cocktail’s flavor, too. Certain garnishes, like a twist of lemon or sprig of mint, can add a pop of taste, elevating the drink’s overall flavor profile. When paired correctly with the main ingredients, garnishes can complement and even balance the flavors of the cocktail, making every sip delightful. They can bring a complementary or contrasting flavor, adding complexity to your beverage.

Increasing the overall drinking experience

Lastly, garnishes enhance the overall drinking experience by engaging multiple senses. The sight of a well-garnished drink, the smell of fresh fruit or herbs, and the added flavors all contribute to an immersive cocktail drinking experience. What are the Different Types of Cocktail Garnishes?

Fruit Garnishes

  • Citrus Wedges, Wheels, and Halves: A staple in bars worldwide, citrus elements such as lemon, lime, and orange bring instant vibrancy and a refreshing zing to your cocktails.
  • Berries and Cherries: From sweet strawberries to tart cherries, these juicy fruits contribute a burst of sweetness and a dash of color to your glass.
  • Apple Slices and Pear Fans: Fancy an autumn cocktail? These fruits will not disappoint.

How to Create Fruit Garnishes

Creating fruit garnishes is part culinary art, part precise knife work. Specific tools, like paring knives or zesters, may come in handy but aren’t strictly essential. Fundamentally, it’s about expressing your creativity while honoring the cocktail’s flavor profile, as drinks mixologist expert Robert Hess shares .

  • Techniques for Cutting and Peeling Fruits: Start with freshly washed, firm fruits. Cut too thick, and you risk overpowering the cocktail; cut too thin, and it may disintegrate. Strive for balance.
  • The Role of Fresh Versus Canned Fruit in Garnishes: Fresh fruits usually trump canned options in both taste and texture. However, cocktail cherries or canned pineapples can be great garnishes for specific retro-themed cocktails.

Vegetable Garnishes

  • Cucumber Wheels and Ribbons: Cucumbers bring a cool, crisp freshness to your cocktails, ideal for summery blends.
  • Bell Pepper Shapes: Coming in a variety of colors, bell peppers can be a unique and visually striking garnish for cocktails.
  • Pickled Vegetables: If you fancy a tangy kick to your cocktail, why not consider pickled veggies as an unusual but delightful garnish?

How to Create Vegetable Garnishes

Garnishing with vegetables can often be a bit more challenging than fruits due to their diverse shapes and textures.

  • Techniques for Slicing and Carving Vegetables: Sharp tools are vital here. Initiate with simple slices before advancing to more intricate shapes and designs.
  • Brine Recipes for Home Pickling: This is where you can truly take control of your garnish’s flavor. The basic formula is water, vinegar, salt, and sugar, but the possibilities for customization are endless.

Herb Garnishes

  • Mint Sprigs and Rosemary Skewers: These fragrant herbs can make your cocktail look and smell garden-fresh.
  • Basil and Sage Leaves: Though less common, these herbs can provide a delightful aroma and a cutting edge to sweeter cocktails.
  • Edible flowers : Embrace your inner florist with these beautiful and tasteful additions to your drink.

How to Create Herb Garnishes

Handling herbs requires a gentle approach.

  • Best Practices for Handling Herbs: Pick them fresh, gently wash, and pat them dry. Never bruise or crush them unless required for the recipe.
  • Drying and Storing Techniques for Optimal Freshness: Air drying is a popular method that preserves the flavor and aroma of most herbs.

Miscellaneous Garnishes

  • Cheese and Meat Skewers: These hearty garnishes are fantastic for savory cocktails or bloody mary’s.
  • Cocktail Onions and Olives: Perfect for martinis, these garnishes add balance and a satisfying crunch.
  • Candied Garnishes: Sweet tooth? A sugared rim or a candy skewer could be your go-to garnish.
  • Boundary-pushing Garnishes like Dry Ice and Smoke: These eye-catching elements add a dash of drama, impressing even seasoned cocktail aficionados.

Mastering the subtle craft of garnishing can elevate your mixology skills, making every cocktail a memorable experience. Now that we’ve covered the basics, it’s time for the fun part – putting those creative skills to the test! So pour yourself a glass, experiment with the ingredients, and let’s explore some innovative cocktail garnishing techniques in the next section!

Remember, recklessly adding garnishes can overwhelm the drink’s taste and defeat its purpose. Choose harmonious garnishes that complement your cocktail’s flavor spectrum, resulting in a well-integrated and visually appealing masterpiece. The world of cocktail garnishing is vast and often delightful, and we’ve merely skimmed the surface. Be audacious, be creative, and most importantly – have fun garnishing your cocktails!

What are Some Creative Techniques for Garnishing Cocktails?

cool cocktail presentation

Flaming Citrus Peels

Imagine sipping a cocktail with a light aroma of citrus, offset by a tempting burnt tinge… that’s what you get with flaming citrus peels . This garnishing technique involves setting the citrus peel on fire for a brief moment, then expressing its oils on the flame. The result is a captivating smokiness that enhances the character of your drink.

Layering Color with Fruits and Vegetables

Cocktails are all about vibrance and joy, so why not infuse some color into them? By layering color with fruits and vegetables , you can create a visual feast for the eyes. For instance, a bright strawberry slice can add a pop of color to a Mojito, whereas a wafer-thin cucumber wheel can lend a cool green tinge to a Gin and Tonic.

Edible Glitter and Rim Sugars

Want to add a dazzling twist to your drink? Consider using edible glitter or rim sugars . They not only make your cocktail sparkle but also introduce a sweet or tangy element, thus intensifying the taste. Edible glitter in your champagne cocktail or a colored sugar-rimmed Margarita can truly be a party sensation!

Dehydrated Fruit Wheels

Dehydrated fruit wheels have been gaining immense popularity lately, and rightly so. They look artistic, have a concentrated flavor and aroma, and unlike fresh fruit garnishes, they have a longer shelf life. You can easily prepare them at home using an oven or a dehydrator.

Where can you learn more? David Wondrich , one of the most-respected cocktail historians, dives deep into the world of garnishes here .

Frequently Asked Questions about Cocktail garnishing techniques

What is cocktail garnishing.

Cocktail garnishing refers to the art of decorating or enhancing the appearance and often the flavor of a cocktail using various items such as fruit slices, herbs, olives, or even edible flowers.

What are some popular garnishing techniques?

Some popular garnishing techniques include the lemon twist, the flamed citrus peel, the cherry on a stick, the salt or sugar rim, and using fresh herbs like mint or basil.

What is the purpose of cocktail garnishes?

Cocktail garnishes not only serve to improve the presentation and aesthetic value of the cocktail but often they also enhance the drink’s flavor or aroma.

How do you make a citrus twist garnish?

To make a twist, cut a thin piece of citrus peel about the size of your thumb. Then simply twist it over the drink to release oils onto the surface. The twist can be added to the cocktail or discarded.

When should you add the garnish to a cocktail?

Add your garnish after you’ve mixed the drink and just before you serve it. This is because some garnishes, like sprigs of mint or citrus twists, will start to change the taste of the cocktail the longer they sit in it.

Is making a garnish out of a whole piece of fruit considered extravagant?

Not at all, creating garnishes out of a whole piece of fruit, such as pineapples or watermelons, can be a unique and entertaining way to serve cocktails. However, it requires more prep time and might be best saved for special occasions.

How do I make a sugar or salt rim for my cocktail?

First, take a slice of lemon or lime and run it around the rim of the glass. Then, dip the rim into a plate with either salt or sugar. Spin the glass until the rim is covered to your liking.

Should a cocktail always have a garnish?

No, a cocktail does not always need a garnish. Some cocktails like the Old Fashioned or Martini are often served with garnishes but it mainly depends on the bartender’s or guest’s preference.

What are some creative garnishing techniques?

Some creative garnishing techniques include using edible flowers, curled cucumber slices, star anise, or even creating dehydrated fruit for garnishes. The only limit is your creativity.

Do garnishes serve a functional purpose in a cocktail or are they purely aesthetic?

While many see garnishes as purely aesthetic, they can often serve functional purposes. A lime wedge can be squeezed into the cocktail for additional flavor. Herbs, like mint, can release essential oils that add aroma. And a sugar or salt rim can impact the cocktail’s taste.

How Bars Can Craft More Appealing—Yet Profitable—Cocktail Presentations

Perfect presentation is more than great garnishes, and with the right tools it can be sustainable and cost-effective, too

written by Laura Burgess

published February 21, 2022

cool cocktail presentation

“When I say ‘Martini,’ you see a Martini,” explains Robert Krueger, the head bartender for Bar Chrystie and John Fraser Restaurants , pointing to the classic cocktail’s signature thin-stemmed glass, clear appearance, and lemon-peel or olive garnish. “The goal for every cocktail we make is for it to have its own silhouette that’s as distinctive and iconic as the classics.”

While visions of perfect Martinis and Mojitos are easy to imagine and recreate, cocktail presentation isn’t limited to glassware and garnishes. “The presentation of the drink starts way before shaking and garnishing,” Krueger adds. The presentation process includes every action from ordering through serving, and varies from low-key pouring to Cirque-du-Soleil-level showmanship, but what matters most is a sense of purpose throughout the process.

“Watching someone doing work with concentration is inherently intriguing, so if the bartender is focused on the process, that will always elevate the moment of garnishing and the act of presentation,” explains Krueger. “Cocktail hour is the time of day where work is over, and a cocktail is a license to relax.”

By focusing on the guest experience and creating a deliberate strategy for presentation, constructing and serving gorgeous cocktails can become second nature, without sacrificing margins or valuable prep time.

Use Ice to Add Intrigue

“ Ice is one of the most overlooked and underestimated aspects of drink making,” explains Jessica “Rabbit” King, the owner-operator of Knoxville, Tennessee’s Brother Wolf and Sapphire . “Ice matters from both an aesthetic perspective and also from a cost perspective.” In addition to making the cocktail look beautiful, the size, shape, quality, and fit of the ice in the glass directly relates to cocktail profitability.

While custom ice, like the large, branded cubes in Brother Wolf’s signature barrel-aged Negroni, can be costly, King believes presentation doesn’t need to detract from the bottom line. Instead, she recommends bartenders and managers keep a close eye on standard formulas—including the cost of the ice, straws, and glassware—to price drinks efficiently.

cool cocktail presentation

Deke Dunne, the bar director at Washington, D.C.’s Allegory , an Alice in Wonderland-themed speakeasy within the Eaton Hotel , agrees with King. “Ice is the easiest way to make something feel more special,” he says. “Take a vodka-soda and put a long, clear spear of ice in it, and you’ve just elevated that cocktail by a mile.”

King also recommends considering how the glass factors into the presentation, particularly when considering the type and amount of ice used. “A glass can make the difference between two ounces of liquor looking skimpy or looking like three and a half ounces,” says King. “It’s not trickery—it’s thoughtfulness and really managing your program so every single drink is presented in the best light.”

Repurpose Ingredients for Presentation

Garnish and glassware costs can easily spiral, especially if drinks are presented with fresh ingredients that have a short shelf life. As a result, many of the best cocktail programs rely on sustainable and reusable presentation elements, while purposefully sourcing fresh items.

“I challenge my team by saying they can only have a garnish if it’s a byproduct of an ingredient we use. We care about sustainability at our bar and that also adds to the story,” says Dunne, who also advocates for reusable garnishes like the specialty glowing coasters used in Allegory’s You Can’t Kill Us All, a clarified milk punch. “It’s great because we can use six coasters for six months rather than using hundreds of other items.”

cool cocktail presentation

Brian Evans, the bar director for Sunday Hospitality Group in New York City, agrees. “The last thing you want to do is upset operators with unexpected costs,” he says, noting that creative sourcing can mitigate presentation-related expenses. “Think about a pineapple—you can create six types of garnishes from a single fruit if you commit to using the peel, fronds, and the pineapple itself.”

Similarly, Evans advocates for tweaking traditional garnishes to add an artistic edge to classic drinks. “You can trim citrus peels with patterned scissors to make a zig-zag pattern or square edges,” he says, adding that many tools cost less than $10. “When you make patterned cuts, the fruit actually unleashes more aromas. The twisting pattern and those extra aromas just add a degree of thoughtfulness to the drink without adding much effort.”

California-based cocktail consultant Rosie Grillo similarly points out that cocktail presentation programs within restaurants can take advantage of the wide array of ingredients often on site. “Chefs are a secret weapon for garnishes,” she says. “Berries that aren’t pretty enough for a cheesecake could make a gorgeous berry syrup to swirl into a drink, or extra jalapeños could be smoked and turned into a show-stopping element in a tequila drink.”

Prepare with Visual Presentation in Mind

From preparing a perfect mise-en-place to batching signature cocktails in advance, the secret to creating ovation-worthy presentations is understanding both sides of the bar. “Visuals can be the main draw for guests to come in for the first time, whether they’ve seen a picture on social media or in a magazine,” says Grillo. “That imagery inspired them from afar, so you want to preserve the magic when they experience the bar in person.”

Understanding the guest perspective, especially in terms of presentation, reinforces the value of preparedness behind the bar. Having perfectly prepared garnishes, clean tools, and easy access to ingredients literally sets the stage for great presentation.

“ The number one thing I teach is that if a garnish isn’t perfect when you cut it … then it has no place going into your mise en place at the bar,” says Krueger. “There should never be a chance to pull a garnish that would be rejected.”

cool cocktail presentation

Dunne agrees, and suggests bartenders place their tools and garnishes in an ergonomic location for easy access during service. At Allegory, that means a large mise en place in the center of the bar, and pre-cutting garnishes to exacting standards so they sit perfectly in each glass. In addition, the Allegory pre-batches complex drinks before service to maintain consistency, control waste, and present each cocktail quickly.

“We pre-batch everything we can,” says Dunne, noting the simple step of combining certain ingredients before service can turn a 10-step cocktail into a two-step drink, saving time and enhancing the guest experience on busy nights. “Batching produces such an amazing drink consistently and guests are still getting the experience of a drink being made just for them.”

To keep costs in check and reduce waste when prepping, Krueger recommends incorporating data from point-of-sale systems. “Ordering and preparation of garnishes should be done in reasonable proportion to the popularity of a given item based on sales projections. You should know whether you sell five of something in a night, or 55, or 500.”

Conscientious sourcing, deliberate garnishing, and an eye for sustainability can take a drink from drab to dazzling—a transformation that can likewise turn any patron into a licensed-to-relax regular. And there’s nothing better for bartenders, guests, and the bottom line than that.

47 Summer Cocktails to Put You in a Sunny Mood

By Zoe Denenberg and The Editors of Epicurious

Frozen watermelon and tequila in stemmed glasses with slices of watermelon.

No single spirit has a hold on summertime. Great summer cocktails can start with gin ,  rum , vodka , or tequila (or in the case of the  Long Island Iced Tea , all of the above). Sure,  whiskey can come out to play too. And plenty of our favorite summer sippers are low in alcohol, with just a touch of sherry or a splash of  Aperol , or  totally free of booze . Anything goes, really, as long as the drink is cooling and fun to sip ( Sea Breeze , anyone?).

Below you’ll find our essential summer drinks, including simple highballs, flavor-packed slushies ,  big-batch pitcher cocktails , and plenty of tipples that make the most of ripe fruit. These fresh (and occasionally bubbly) summer cocktails are meant for warm weather. So whether you’re in search of a  classic daiquiri (or a  frozen one ) or something fresh and new (hello, avocado margarita ), stock your freezer with ice and get scrolling before your next backyard gathering.

Specifically looking for low-alcohol cocktails? Take a spin through our cocktail ABV calculator .

A glass of Aperol spritz with orange slices.

Our Favorite Aperol Spritz

The ultimate summer cocktail might be a spritz sipped in an Italian piazza, but a really good spritz at home is a pretty decent runner-up. This version is a little lighter on the orangey aperitif for extra refreshment. Serve with salty snacks like  potato chips or  olives .

Two cocktails made with tequila mezcal lime and Topo Chico in a collins glasses.

Rosie Ranch Water

If you’re on the hunt for easy summer cocktails, it doesn’t get much simpler than Texas ranch water. Once you’ve got the basic formula down,  add your own flourishes . (The spicy salt on this guy is truly fabulous.)

Red sangria a wine cocktail with cognac triple sec orange and lemon slices seltzer and ice cubes in stemless wine...

Any summertime dinner can be improved with a pitcher of sangria. This classic one uses red, not white wine (if you’re looking for a blonde version,  try this one from José Andrés ). Seek out  superfine granulated sugar for this recipe, which dissolves quickly in the wine and liqueur.

Frozen watermelon and tequila in stemmed glasses with slices of watermelon.

Frozen Watermelon Margarita

The best way to cool down this summer isn’t with a dip in the pool: It’s with a sip of this pretty frozen watermelon margarita.

Three glasses of Pimm's and ginger beer garnished with cucumber slices and mint leaves.

This simple, low-alcohol summertime cocktail only needs two ingredients: fragrant Pimm’s liqueur and ginger ale or ginger beer. Garnish the glasses with sliced cucumber and fresh mint leaves.

Glasses of tequila orange juice grenadine ice cubes and orange slices.

Tequila Sunrise

Boost your spirits with sunshine in a cup, a colorful mainstay of tropical resorts, beach barbecues, and ’70s rock stars: the classic tequila sunrise.

Long Island Iced Tea cocktails consisting of vodka gin rum tequila triple sec lemon juice and CocaCola in glasses with...

Long Island Iced Tea

Gin, vodka, rum, and tequila, all in one drink? It’s none other than the Long Island Iced Tea, the original party drink of the season. In addition to the basic recipe, we’ve included a few variations on this classic: Swap the cola for cranberry juice to make a Long Beach Iced Tea, or add whiskey to make a Texas Tea. Take it in any direction you’d like—just  don’t forget to hydrate .

Two glasses of frozen pina colada of a counter with pineapple garnish.

Piña Colada

With its winning combination of coconut, pineapple juice, and rum, this piña colada recipe is creamy, just sweet enough, and utterly refreshing. Blend a batch at home and pretend you’re on a beach somewhere.

Three paloma cocktails garnished with grapefruit slices.

The Ultimate Paloma

Move over, frosé: the Paloma is the blush-hued drink of the summer. A truly great Paloma layers on the grapefruit flavors—zingy grapefruit soda (preferably  Ting ) makes up most of the drink, but a squeeze of fresh grapefruit juice brightens the mix and deepens its citrusy character.

Two Mai Tais in rocks glasses with orange slices and sprigs of mint.

People have thrown all manner of things into a mai tai, but this recipe is legit: a rum sour made with lime, an orange liqueur, and orgeat —the fragrant almond cocktail syrup. You’ll need two rums here to make this classic cocktail really shine: one grassy, fresh rhum agricole, and another rum that's been aged in barrels.

Frozen Boozy Arnold Palmer

Transform the classic iced tea–lemonade combo into a refreshing frozen cocktail for summer. Freezing the tea and lemonade into ice cubes before blending is an easy way to keep the flavors concentrated.

Photo of two glasses of the classic gin and tonic one with a lime wedge and one with an orange slice and extra lime...

The Most Refreshing Gin and Tonic

The best gin and tonic is all in the technique, because the most important ingredient in a G&T is not really the gin, or even the tonic.  It’s carbonation .

Photo of two glasses of frozen gin and tonic with cucumber slices.

Frozen Gin and Tonic

What do you get when you take classic summer cocktails like the G&T and put them in an ice-filled blender? Well, a little adaptation is required, but once you skip the fizz (using  tonic syrup instead of tonic water) you get one of the world's most refreshing summer drinks.

Three glasses and a pitcher of a watermelon juice and sherry cocktail with cucumber slices and ice cubes.

Jam Session

Three ingredients. Low alcohol. This watermelon drink recipe could be your go-to this summer . To make things  truly easy, pick up watermelon juice from a local juice bar.

Two mojitos in a highball glass with mint and limes.

For this adaptation of the classic Cuban cocktail, you don't need a muddler. Tear the mint, then stir with lime juice, sugar, white rum, and soda water.

Two blackberry margaritas in salt garnished glasses.

Blackberry Margarita

This summer cocktail captures the feeling of fresh fruit juices running down your arms in the heat of July—without the sticky mess. In addition to imparting flavor, ripe blackberries dye this margarita a deep magenta hue.

Two glasses of bushwick thirst killer drinks garnished with raspberries.

Bushwick Thirst Killer

Acid phosphate, a  vintage soda shop ingredient , stands in for citrus juices in this twist on the  Japanese Thirst Killer . Coconut water keeps it hydrating, while club soda adds a touch of fizz to this spritzer.

A glass of frozen margarita with a lime wedge.

Frozen Margarita

Customize a batch of these frozen cocktails however you choose: Add frozen strawberries, peaches, or sliced jalapeños. There are enough possibilities to riff all summer long.

An amaretto sour in a coupe glass garnished with drops of bitters.

Amaretto Sour

The amaretto sour is ready for its redemption tour , and this frothy-sweet-sour cocktail recipe proves that the drink has a swanky side.

An amethyst cocktail made with whiskey and blueberry syrup.

Amethyst Sour

This bright, refreshing twist on an old-fashioned  whiskey sour adds fresh blueberry syrup to the equation. It’s a great way to use that farmers market carton.

Two mint julep cocktails shown in silver julep cups with mint garnish and crushed ice.

When you really need a mountain of crushed ice, this fragrant take on the classic minty bourbon drink hits the spot.

Photo of pineapple mezcal cocktail recipe in a glass with pineapple leaf garnish.

Fresh lime, fresh cilantro, and fresh pineapple meet a single slice of chile in this lightly spicy mezcal cocktail. Just add chips and  guacamole .

Cynar and cranberry cocktail in a rocks glass.

Cynar-Berry Spritz

There’s much more to the  world of spritzes than Aperol. Cynar makes a bolder, more bitter, and more complex spritz, perfect for sipping with a charcuterie platter.

Three margarita cocktails in glasses with salted rims.

The Classic Margarita

This classic margarita recipe is simple enough to memorize—just two parts good tequila, one part Cointreau, and one part freshly-squeezed lime, then shake, shake, shake.

Two amaretto sour slushies with brandied cherries and cocktail umbrellas.

Amaretto Sour Slushy

Yes, this slushy has the fragrant almond flavor you might recall from many too-sweet drinks of your youth, but it’s also truly tart and fresh. And there’s an added twist: It’s served with an optional float of bracingly bitter Fernet Branca, which gives the drink a blast of herbal flavor that pairs remarkably well with the almond liqueur.

Two Aperol and apricot cocktails in wine glasses.

Apercot Spritz

Celebrate stone fruit season with this easy, fragrant spritz made with apricot nectar. It can easily be made non-alcoholic, too: Omit the Aperol and prosecco and double down on the apricot nectar and soda water.

Photo of two frozen rosalita cocktails.

Frozen Rosalita

A margarita is usually sweetened with orange liqueur, but the Rosalita uses bittersweet amaro for added complexity. Freeze the combo first to get it nice and chilled before it heads to the blender with a big scoop of ice. In search of more  frozen drink tips ? We’ve got you.

Three grilled fruit Margaritas in glasses.

3-Ingredient Grilled Orange Margarita

Grilled oranges infuse this refreshing summer cocktail with slightly sweet, slightly bitter notes and smoky flavor, balanced by bright lime juice and aged tequila.

Image may contain Tin and Can

Spiked Ginger-Lemonade Soda Can Cocktail

Served in a can of ginger beer, this tart, pleasantly bitter drink is as well-balanced as a complex cocktail, but refreshingly easy to put together.

Two glasses of Sherry Coladas garnished with pineapple and cherries.

Sherry Colada

Looking for lower-alcohol options for hot days and many hours of  barbecuing ? This sherry colada packs complex flavor, but hovers at just 5% ABV.

Image may contain Plant Food Produce Burger and Vegetable

Frozen Pineapple Mojito

Pineapple cups make a fun presentation for this frosty cocktail, but if you're short on time, just use regular cocktail glasses instead.

Photo of tequila cocktails Margarita with cucumbers and cilantro garnish in cocktail glass with salted rim.

Cucumber Cilantro Margarita

If you love savory cocktails, try dressing your margarita with muddled cucumber and cilantro. Next question: what kind of  tacos are you making?

Photo of two frozen moscow mule cocktails.

Frozen Moscow Mule

This version of the popular vodka cocktail skips the ginger beer and heads to the blender for a spicy, frozen drink that’s even more refreshing on humid days. Want a classic Moscow Mule ? We’ve got that too.

Photograph of Campari cocktails on a tray.

Perfect Circle

Make your summer  dinner party easier by mixing drinks for everyone in one big batch. This simple combination of bittersweet Campari and refreshing fino sherry will quench your thirst.

Image may contain Human Person Drink Beverage Soda and Finger

Classic Michelada

Though this shares some flavors with a  Bloody Mary , it requires much less effort to make. This simple, tomato-based beer cocktail works at brunch or the beach.

Strawberry grapefruit and chamomile punch in two glasses and a pitcher.

Strawberry, Grapefruit, and Chamomile Brunch Punch

This grapefruit, strawberry, and chamomile tea punch may seem delicate, but with a few cups of bourbon, it packs a wallop—so go slow.

Blended frozen mango tequila orange liqueur lime juice sugar and lime slices in stemmed poco glasses.

Frozen Mango Margarita

Frozen margaritas, but make them mango. If you can't find ripe mangoes, add a bit of extra sugar to sweeten these slushies.

Two jungle bird cocktails made with black strap rum campari and pineapple in a rocks glasses.

Jungle Bird

This tiki cocktail is unique in that it features Campari. The bittersweet liqueur provides a strong backbone for the otherwise fruity rum-and-pineapple drink.

Bartender behind the bar preparing three orangecolored Negroni slushies.

Parson’s Negroni Slushy

Nothing wrong with a classic  Negroni in summer, but you might want to try this version: a refreshing frozen drink that's juicy, citrusy, and perfectly bittersweet. Stick your feet in a baby pool, put up the sun umbrella, and you're set for the afternoon.

Three tall cocktails made with tequila mezcal raspberry syrup and ginger beer.

Redheaded Saint

Why choose between tequila and mezcal when you can have both? Blanco tequila gives this blush-hued cocktail its body, while a splash of mezcal brings just enough smokiness.

Rum and lime cocktail with a bottle of beer on the side.

Attitude Adjustment

This lightly carbonated spin on a  daisy gets its fizz not from prosecco, but from Miller High Life (also known as the Champagne of beers).

Strawberryrhubarb spritz in three rocks glasses.

Strawberry-Rhubarb Spritz

No, that gorgeous red hue doesn’t come from  grenadine . Rhubarb syrup and muddled strawberries give this farmers-market-fresh cocktail its gorgeous ruby hue.

Photograph of one of our best tequila cocktails Iced yellow cocktail in tall glass with pineapple garnish.

Tropic Like It's Hot

This tall, refreshing  pineapple and tequila cocktail will spirit you away to the beach, even if you're just hosting happy hour on your front porch.

Three vibrant red cocktails in tall icefilled glasses garnished with cucumbers and mint beside bottles of ginger beer...

Blackberry-Cucumber Mule

You don't need any liqueurs or vermouth for this easy, gingery summer cocktail. Just a bottle of gin or vodka, plus some berries, cucumber, and mint. If you don't have any blackberries on hand, try raspberries or strawberries.

Photo of a Daiquiri Cocktail

Classic Daiquiri

While you might hear the word daiquiri and think first of the fruity, slushy  strawberry concoction you had once at a tropical hotel, this version of the drink is more in line with the ones bar-goers would’ve been sipping in Cuba in the 1890s. The quintessential  rum cocktail contains just three ingredients: light rum, simple syrup, and fresh lime juice.

Two player piano cocktails with a squeezed lime on a table.

Player Piano

Cap off a long summer day with a round of these floral aperitifs. The  equal-parts formula is mercifully easy to remember: Simply combine an equal split of Aperol, elderflower liqueur, lime juice, and rhum agricole, plus a boost of tiki bitters.

An avocado margarita in a glass with limes.

Avocado Margarita

To make the ultimate creamy margarita, just add avocado. It’s one of our newest summer cocktail recipes on Epicurious—and it’ll have all your guests gushing.
