8 Great Movies That Virat Kohli Should Watch

Aditya Mandhane of 8 Great Movies That Virat Kohli Should Watch

Cricket is perhaps India’s biggest obsession. And with his exquisite technique paired with explosive tenacity, and now his glorious, albeit slightly controversial stint with the captain’s badge, Virat Kohli is the current poster boy of Indian cricket. Probably the most complete batsman we’ve seen since the master blaster himself, Kohli has consistently made us swoon with his stratospheric stats as he leads successful chases for the team day in day out. Kohli is already an icon at 29. And his brand of committed aggression shows that he has so much more to offer.

Now, if anything comes even close to cricket’s contendorship for ‘India’s Biggest Obsession’, it is cinema (and politics, but we’ll talk about that some other time). As proud cinephiles who are also obsessed with “The gentlemen’s game”, we couldn’t help but mash the two up a little and wonder what kind of films Chiku would love. So, Mr. Kohli, if you’re reading this, welcome to your ideal watchlist.

1. Rocky (1976)

virat kohli biography film

Well, isn’t this the most obvious one on the list? Before the sprawling franchise which basically displayed a lot of jingoism and a series of epic workout montages, ‘Rocky’ is a straightforward underdog tale told with a lot of heart. Rocky Balboa, a working-class local wrestler who is down on his luck, gets the shot of his lifetime when he is chosen to fight World Champ Apollo Creed, and boy does he make the most of it! A dramatic tale of resilience, which shows the importance of giving a fight even when all odds are stacked up against you, ‘Rocky’ would be sure to inspire Kohli to “eat lightning and crap thunder”.

2. Offside (2006)

virat kohli biography film

It is no secret that Kohli is an avid fan of “the beautiful game”. He has shown his love for football on multiple occasion and even co-owns and ISL team named FC Goa. Which is why we think he would really enjoy this entry. ‘Offside’ is a 2006 Iranian film about a group of girls who dress up as boys to get entry into a Iran’s World Cup qualifying match with Bahrain. To witness a tale of such blatant inequality in the backdrop of a beloved sport would really entertain and inspire the Indian Captain, and like so many other football fans, rejuvenate his love for the game.

On a side note, we’d also recommend the documentary ‘Ronaldo’ (2015), as Kohli is an ardent Cristiano Ronaldo fanatic. He would love to get an insight into the magical story of the boy from Madeira.

3. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

virat kohli biography film

Virat Kohli has time and again been referred to as the ‘Champion of the chase’  for his insane knack of playing his best innings under pressure. He has now eclipsed even Sachin Tendulkar in terms of tons scored while batting second in half as many innings. And for a charismatic chaser like that, one of the best chase films of all time would be the cinematic sweet spot. ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ is basically one giant chase scene in a post-apocalyptic desert, but that does not stop it from being one big adrenaline rush of action. Kohli would certainly relish the nail-biting film and root for the people being chased for once!

4. Band Baaja Baaraat (2010)

virat kohli biography film

From the love for chasing to love. It is no secret that Virat Kohli is dating the in-house ‘bubbly girl’ of Bollywood Anushka Sharma. It is one of the most scrutinised and reported relationships in tabloids. Anushka has been seen cheering her beau on at many a match too. So it is more than fair to expect him to watch some of her work, which he probably has. But if not, the best place to start would be this 2010 flick about two dreamers from Dilli who open ‘Shaadi Mubarak’, a spunky, youthful wedding planning company, but one of them starts to fall in love with the other, and sparks fly. BBB oozes with a fresh concept, foot-tapping music and taut screenplay. Kohli, being a Dilli boy himself, would love this film (some intimate scenes barred!).

5. Hachiko: A Dog’s Tale (2009)

virat kohli biography film

Anyone who follows Kohli on Instagram knows about his unbridled love for the canine. The Indian captain adopted 15 destitute dogs in Bangalore during the recent IPL season. And for such an avid lover of dogs, I can’t think of a more touching movie experience than this. Inspired by the true story of a devoted Akita dog named Hachi, who waited for his master outside the train station every day, even after the master suffers an untimely death. I’ve seen the film bring a tear to the eyes of even the most stoic people, and I’m sure Virat would love his trusted friends even more after watching it.

 6. Whiplash (2014)

virat kohli biography film

Sunil Gavaskar once said “To be a good player, you need talent. To be a great player, you need an attitude like Kohli”. Kohli’s aggression, often touted as a negative aspect, makes him who he is. And say what you may, but aggression gets results. And ‘Whiplash’ as a story is a testament to that. J.K. Simmon’s ruthless act as Fletcher, an instructor who won’t stop at hurling chars or spitting abuses to get the best out of his pupils, would be sure to open new veins of aggression for Kohli. Andrew, Fletcher’s ambitious pupil, will inspire him to never give up, and we know the massive feats he has already achieved due to sheer determination. All-in-all, ‘Whiplash’ is a total package for Kohli.

7. Pumping Iron (1977)

virat kohli biography film

Fitness is a crucial part of any sport, and being one of the fittest players in the game today, Kohli must need to spend a lot of time pumping iron in the gym, and this 1977 docudrama about bodybuilding is the ultimate workout inspiration. Shot during 100 days preceding the 1977 Mr. Universe competition and during it, it made bodybuilding a household craze for the next decade and made Arnold Schwarzenegger a household name. Although the multiple training montages from our first entry would also help, ‘Pumping Iron’ is a film sure to make Kohli pick up the weights.

8. Tropic Thunder (2008)

virat kohli biography film

We bet you did NOT expect this one coming. But I am very sure that ‘Tropic Thunder’ has one aspect which Virat Kohli could draw a lot of inspiration from – the final Les Grossman victory dance! We have all seen Kohli shake a leg (often with RCB homie Chris Gayle) in post-match celebration, and the unhinged, hilarious dance by Tom Cruise playing Grossman, a profane, balding studio executive producing the movie inside the movie. While there are a lot of other out-and-out dancing films we could have suggested, nothing would beat Kohli’s rendition of the epic dance. So if you find him shaking his hips like Les Grossman during the next match, be sure to thank us ;-P!

In March 2023, ahead of the 2023 season of IPL, he was spotted flaunting a new tattoo that he got inked on his right hand. According to tattoo artist Sunny Bhanushali, who inked him this new tattoo, the tattoo reflects Kohli’s spirituality. While giving a glimpse of Kohli’s new tattoo, Bhanushali wrote on his blog,

He wanted to cover up his old tattoo with a new one. As I got to work on the project, I felt the pressure and excitement building up inside me. I couldn’t believe that I was working with the one and only Virat Kohli. I could feel the energy and passion that Virat brought to the project. You just don’t understand how to get over it. That was a phase when I literally couldn’t do anything to overturn things…I felt like I was the loneliest guy in the world.”
I’ve decided to step down as the T20 captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October.”

He elaborated,

Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all three formats and captaining regularly for last five to six years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead Indian team in Test and ODI cricket.

He further added,

I have given my everything to the Team during my time as T20 captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 team as a batsman moving forward.”
It has been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it is now. There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey: but never had there been a lack of effort or a lack of belief.”
I have always believed in giving my 120 percent in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it is not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to the team.”

While giving thanks to Shatri & Co., he said,

Ravi Bhai and the support group who were the engine behind this vehicle that moved up in Test Cricket consistently. You all have played a massive role in bringing this vision to life. Lastly, a big thank you to M.S. Dhoni who believed in me as captain and found me to be an able individual who could take Indian cricket forward.”
One thing I can tell you is when I gave up Test captaincy, I got a message from only one person who I’ve played with before — M. S. Dhoni.”

He also criticised those who gave suggestions on TV debates but never approached him. He added,

A lot of people have my number and a lot of people give suggestions on TV, but among people who have my number, I didn’t get a message from anyone else.” [16] The Hindu jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_3554_1_16').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_3554_1_16', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });

Arguably the greatest all-round batsman of this generation and one of the finest of all time. There are two distinct halves in Kohli’s career – the first where he struggled to cope with the sudden stardom and pressure, and the second where he reinvented himself, made fitness the driving force behind his cricket and took his game to a level never before seen.

Kohli is so much more than the runs, centuries and wins. He has become the undisputed king of cricket, injecting life into the global game and raising the profile of Test cricket at a time when T20 cricket was threatening to take over completely.

It was clear early on that Kohli was destined for greatness. He lost his father when he was 18. The tragedy struck during his team Delhi’s first-class match against Karnataka in 2006. After completing the final rites, Kohli returned to the ground and scored a match-saving 90 in the second innings.

His international career had a slow start. Kohli struggled to cement his spot in the team until around 2010. He found form just in time for the 2011 World Cup, was included in India’s playing XI and scored a century in his first World Cup game – against Bangladesh. He featured in every game as the men in blue lifted the 50-over title.

The next year, Kohli made a career-defining decision to revamp his fitness regime and make it the focal point of his cricket. Kohli quickly turned into a fitness fanatic and set the benchmark for aspiring cricketers in India and across the world.

Success on the field followed soon after as Kohli became an ODI batting behemoth, mastering the art of securing wins in a chase. He first became Test captain in 2014. But it was only by 2017 that Kohli became captain across all formats. The Kohli era had started and he brought about a complete change in team culture, with emphasis on fitness, fast bowlers and attitude.

It is getting difficult to keep up with the number of records that Kohli has broken over the last few years. He is the only batsman to average more than 50 in all three formats, has already scored 70 international centuries by the age of 31 and seems well on his way to breaking every major batting record.

Under his reign, India have become the No1 Test team in the world with Kohli one of the most successful Test captains of all time – 33 victories with a win percentage of 62. But there are a few missing pieces – victory in a major tournament as captain and Test series wins in England and South Africa being the main ones.

If Kohli manages to tick off the final few boxes, he will finish his career as the greatest player and captain India has produced.

Virat Kohli player profile

India has given to the world many a great cricketer but perhaps none as ambitious as Virat Kohli. To meet his ambition, Kohli employed the technical assiduousness of Sachin Tendulkar and fitness that was in the league of top athletes in the world, not just cricketers. As a result, Kohli became the most consistent all-format accumulator of his time, making jaw-dropping chases look easy, and finding, in his own words, the safest possible way to score runs. Plenty of them.

This ambition transferred seamlessly to his captaincy: he demanded more than ever of his bowlers especially the quick ones, often sacrificed a batsman for bowling depth, and led India to a long stay at No. 1 in Test rankings and a first-ever series win in Australia. He is well on his way to end up as India's most successful Test captain.

Barring one in Bangladesh, Kohli scored Test hundreds in and against every country he played. He absolutely smashed records for number of matches taken to reach eight, nine, ten and eleven thousand ODI runs, and became the first batter to score 50 hundreds in one-day internationals.

An Under-19 world Cup-winning captain, when he burst onto the scene, Kohli was a precocious talent with a cover drive to kill for. He was destined to be India's next big batsman as the Tendulkar era began to retire, but Kohli wanted to be more: a cricketer whom the opposition would be in awe of, a cricketer whose presence would raise the intensity of the contest. He lived every ball, competed each moment, and made sure he had the fitness and strength to do so. He was widely credited for changing the fitness culture in Indian cricket, introducing endurance tests as a criterion for selection.

Kohli was quite simply India's most powerful captain. Centre of every marketing campaign for Indian cricket, he also happened to lead at a time when the BCCI was run by interim administrators who knew better than to draw the ire of Indian cricket's biggest star. There was never any cause to doubt his intent: to do things that will win matches for India, which they did plenty under him.

Virat Kohli Biography

Virat kohli biography: birth, age, family and education , virat kohli cricket career.

When West Delhi Cricket Academy was created in 1998, Kohli was part of its first batch and received training under Rajkumar Sharma.

Kohli made his cricket debut in October 2002 with the Delhi Under-15 team in the 2002-03 Polly Umrigar Trophy and lead the team for the next trophy. He was later selected in the Delhi Under-17 team for the 2003-04 Vijay Merchant Trophy where he finished as the highest run-scorer.

At the age of 18, Kohli made his first-class debut for Delhi against Tamil Nadu wherein he scored 10 runs. In July 2006, he made his debut in the Under-19 team during India's tour of England. India won both ODI and Test series. Kohli made his T20 debut next year and emerged as the highest run-scorer in the Inter-State T20 Championship with 179 runs.

The year 2008 was a life-changing year for Kohli. First, he captained the Under-19 Cricket World Cup-winning team. Second, he was bought by RCB for $30,000 on a youth contract for IPL. Third, he made his international debut.

After recovering from a minor injury, Kohli replaced Gambhir for the tri-series in Sri Lanka and batter at no. 4 in the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy as Yuvraj Singh was recovering from an injury.

For the tri-nation ODI tournament in Bangladesh in 2010, Tendulkar was rested, thereby enabling Kohli to play in each match. Due to his phenomenal performance in Bangladesh, he was praised by the then captain MS Dhoni.

Kohli was part of the World Cup-winning team in 2011 and became the first Indian batsman to score a century on World Cup debut.

Kohli made his Test debut against West Indies at Kingston and performed poorly in the series, amassing just 76 runs in five innings. In 2015, he became the first Indian batsman to score a century against Pakistan in a World Cup match.

During South Africa's tour of India, he became the fastest batsman in the world to make 1,000 runs in T20I cricket, achieving the feat in his 27th innings.

During the ODI tour of Australia, Kohli emerged as the fastest batsman in the world to cross the 7000-run mark in ODIs, and the fastest to score 25 centuries.

During the 3 match Test series against Sri Lanka at home in 2017, he became the first batsman to score six double hundreds as a captain. That year, he scored a total of 2818 international runs, the third-highest by an Indian in a calendar year and highest ever by an Indian player.

In August 2018, he ranked no. 1 in the ICC Test rankings. With this, he became the seventh Indian batter to achieve this milestone. He became the first Indian, first captain and tenth overall to hit three successive centuries in ODIs in October 2018.

For the tri-series in Zimbabwe in 2010, Raina was named captain while Kohli was made vice-captain. During this, he emerged as the fastest Indian batsman to reach 1,000 ODI runs.

He was appointed as vice-captain for the 2012 Asia Cup due to his excellent performance in Australia.

Kohli captained the 2013 West Indies tri-series winning team after Dhoni injured himself during the match. He also captained a five-match ODI tour of Zimbabwe, which India won by 5-0, their first in any away ODI series.

He was named vice-captain for the 2014 ICC World T20 Competition where India emerged as the runner ups and Kohli as Man of the Tournament as he amassed 319 runs in the tournament.

He led India in the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka which India won by 5-0. It was the second whitewash under his captaincy and fourth in India's ODI history.

He led India in the first Test of the Australian tour and scored 115 runs in the first innings, thereby becoming the fourth Indian to score a hundred on his Test captaincy debut. Dhoni announced his retirement from Test cricket at the conclusion of the third match between India and Australia, and Kohli was appointed as the full-time Test captain ahead of the fourth Test at Sydney.

At Sydney, Kohli scored 147 in the first innings and became the first batter in the Test cricket history to score three hundred in his first three innings as Test captain. He was named as captain of the 'Team of the Tournament' for the 2016 World Twenty20 by the ICC.

He captained India in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. India entered the finals but lost to Pakistan. Kohli also captained the 2019 Cricket World Cup where India failed to reach the finals after losing the semi-final match against New Zealand. India's first whitewash under Kohli's captaincy was India's tour of New Zealand in 2020.

India lost the 2021 ICC World Test Championship Final to New Zealand, Kohli's third defeat as captain in knockouts and finals of ICC tournaments. India failed to make it through the semi-finals in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 under Kohli's captaincy.

Kohli started off the innings in his characteristic free-flowing manner, going for his shots and taking on the loose balls from South Africa pacers. However, he slowed down the tempo after the South Africa spinners came on.

Kohli has already scored a ton in this Cricket World Cup.

This came against Bangladesh in Pune when he scored an unbeaten 103 off 97 balls which took India to a seven-wicket win and won him the Player of the Match award. He came very close to another one in Dharamsala against New Zealand, but fell five runs short then.

Then he scored a brilliant 88 against Sri Lanka in Mumbai, but fell before he could clear the line. It didn't take long for him, though, to equal the landmark, achieving the feat on Sunday at the Eden Gardens.

The list of top century-makers in ODI cricket has three Indians at the top, with Rohit Sharma (31) coming behind Tendulkar and Kohli. Nine players have recorded more than 25 hundreds in the format in men's cricket.

Film trailer starring Virat Kohli's double has internet in splits: ‘Is there an Anushka Sharma lookalike too?’

The trailer for hindi film match of life features amit mishra as viraj, a lookalike of virat kohli. the uncanny resemblance has elicited funny responses online..

The trailer of a little-known film titled Match of Life was released last week online. The film stars established actors like Rajpal Yadav , Sudha Chandran, and Supriya Karnik but in supporting roles. The leads are newcomers Yash Mehta and Amit Mishra. Given the lack of star power, the trailer largely stayed under the radar but those who watched were taken aback by Amit’s resemblance to Indian cricketer Virat Kohli, leading to several hilarious responses. Match of Life stars Amit Mishra as Viraj, a Virat Kohli lookalike.

Directed by Aman Sagar, Match of Life is based on cricketer, who looks like Virat Kohli and what he faces in everyday life due to his resemblance with one of the most popular faces in the world. Amit stars as Viraj, who must deal with the unwanted attention that comes his way due to his face, while trying to make it as a cricketer and also sort out his love life. However, the film also has Yash as MMA fighter Arjun in a confusing side-plot where he is Viraj’s protector against bullies, for some reason.

Many viewers on social media shared the trailer and while some were impressed, many were left scratching their heads. Author Chitranshul Sinha tweeted, “The big question is whether this will be considered a sports movie or not?” Media personality Sahil Rizwan shared the trailer and joked, “Virat's been going through a really rough patch recently, but this is probably the worst thing in his life right now.”

Many viewers were confused if the film is a biopic. Others were amused by not spotting any lookalike of Virat’s wife Anushka Sharma . “Is there an Anushka lookalike as the heroine?” read one tweet. Many viewers also commented that the film looked funny and promising. Match of Life releases in theatres on August 5.

Virat and Anushka, who are certainly not in the film, arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday after vacationing in London. The couple was spotted at the airport in the early hours of Tuesday.

Then he scored a brilliant 88 against Sri Lanka in Mumbai, but fell before he could clear the line.It didn’t take long for him, though, to equal the landmark, achieving the feat on Sunday at the Eden Gardens. The list of top century-makers in ODI cricket has three Indians at the top, with Rohit Sharma (31) coming behind Tendulkar and Kohli.
